Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. while driving approximately 57 mph, an abnormal sound emitted from the front driver side of the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the exhaust manifold bolts were fractured and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 134,000.

While returning to my home in nj from a trip to fl, i heard a loud thump from the rear passenger side of the car followed by a noticeable change in exhaust note. i pulled into a gas station a few miles away and inspected the vehicle. the rear portion of the exhaust was missing, from what appeared to be separation due to corrosion. the rear bumper melted at the point above where the exhaust tip extends. of course, warranty coverage for this part expired at 8 yrs/80k miles. *tr

During stop-and-go driving, slowing to a stop, stopped at red light or stop sign, my 2005 jeep grand cherokee w/4.7l v8 stalls out, engine dies. i put my hazard flashers on and place the gear shift to park. restart the car and it starts up right away. check engine light is not on. mechanics cannot find problem. no reading on the code reader (dtc). this happens every day, several times a day for the past month. this is a serious problem that i understand many jeep owners are experiencing like me. please help us resolve this problem. thank you. *tr

I was driving down an interstate when my car totally shut down. had i not been in the right lane so that i could coast off the highway, the incident surely would have ended tragically. this has happened once before, but not in such a dangerous setting. i have a recall notice for this very problem,( p41) but the notice says that chrysler does not have the part needed to correct the problem. the recall notice states that if i do not feel safe, i should take the car to my dealer, have him repair it at my expense, and you will reimburse me. how can the dealer repair the car if the chrysler corporation says the part is not available? if the dealer is able to repair it, why should i have to pay since there is a recall? this is not logical to me. in the meantime, we feel very uneasy driving the car. we narrowly escaped one potentially fatal accident. the dealer refuses to give us a loaner car to use until the replacement part is available. we are quite frustrated. can you give us any indication when the needed part will be available? can you authorize the dealer to repair the problem at your expense? we have always been pleased with our jeep purchases, but this nonchalant attitude toward a very dangerous problem has really disappointed us. we look forward to hearing from you and hope for an amicable resolution to the problem. *tr

I have had my vehicle shut off multiple times while driving. in the past four months, it has happened three times. *tr

Failed to start on 2 occasions 8/10/11 & 8/17/11. all electrical components working; battery recently replaced. *kb

2005 jeep cherokee laredo stalls while being driven at less than 50 mi/h and after backing up in the driveway almost every day (has been doing it for a year now). it has 70,000 miles on. replaced alternator and battery after shut off completely in june 2011 at 67,000 miles. *tr

2005 jeep grand cherokee. consumer states intermittent problem starting *tgw the consumer stated on several occasions the vehicle would not start. several components such as the battery and starter were replaced. however, the problem continued. *jb

When turning the ignition key to the start position, you hear 1 "click" but the vehicle does not start. this is an intermittent event that seems to come and go every few months. when it happens, i have to leave the key in the on position for about 1 - 2 minutes, then attempt to start the engine again. i had previously had my vehicle serviced at the dealership for this problem, but since it is so random, the service personnel could not recreate the event. i even advised them that other owners, registering this same complaint, pointed to corroded solenoid wires as being the culprit. however, the service department had me purchase a new battery last year. this did not fix the condition which continues periodically to this very day. unfortunately, the car has been unable to start at a few times when the surroundings were less than totally safe. i have viewed a number of consumer forums, such as http://autoforum.classifieds1000.com/jeep-grand_cherokee/2005_jeep_gc_not_starting?pg=10. all of these owners have the exact issue but each time, when presented with the details of the occurrences, dealerships disavow all knowledge that this condition exists. many consumers are being told by the dealerships that no other owners have complained about this. *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated while driving 20 mph the vehicle suddenly stalled. the contact stated the vehicle was stuck in the middle of the traffic when the failure occurred. the failure could potentially lead to a crash. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer and it was repaired; however, the repair did not remedy the failure. the contact took the vehicle back to dealer who was unable to identify what caused the vehicle to stall. the contact called the manufacturer and filed a complaint. the contact stated the vehicle was unsafe to drive. the failure mileage was 76,000.

My 2005 jeep grand cherokee started acting up about a year after i purchased it and has progressively gotten worse and worse. it has problems shifting and identifying what gear it is in on a daily basis, for example when i put it in drive from park prnd will all be illuminated like it doesn't know what gear it is in and it will make a loud thud sound. then when you drive it won't shift from first gear and will rev up or it will get stuck in 3rd gear and won't down shift. sometimes it will be driving normal and when i stop at a stop sign and then go to pull out into traffic it will stall right in the middle of traffic and i can't get it to snap out of it! it will also decide that it doesn't know what gear it is in while i am driving on the expressway and will start to rev up and freeze on me. this is very unsettling and dangerous and could defiantly cause a serious accident. from what i have read in other reviews many people have this same problem with their 2005 jeep grand cherokee so it doesn't seem like just a coincidence to me and something should be done. i have taken it to different mechanics and no one can give me an answer as to whats wrong or how to fix it. *kb

Sometimes when i drive the engine feels like it stalls out and my rpm's don't move, all the boxes around prnd light up and the check engine light comes on. i have to pull over and put the car in park or sometimes i have to turn it off. once this is done the car continues to drive like nothing happened but the check engine light will stay on for a day. sometimes it happens on the highway which is very scary to just drop speed down to 40. i have read many blogs about this issue. it happens at random times.

My 2005 jeep grand cherokee has been stalling when at slow speeds. when i come to the end of my driveway, when i stop at a red light, in parking lots and slowing down on the highways the truck begins slowing down and shuts down completely. when i put it in park and restart it has been starting back up. i researched on the internet and saw there were recalls for jeeps stalling, however when i called the dealership, bradshaw jeep in oakville ct and i was told that my jeep was not included in the recall and i would need to pay for anything they would need to work on in the truck if grand cherokees were recalled for stalling and i'm now calling to say mine is stalling, it is odd to me that they respond my jeep is not part of the same problem/recall. it's doing the same thing. in the past week alone my truck has stalled three times, monday while i was coming towards a traffic light slowing down to turn, last night pulling into my driveway and this morning stopping at a main intersection during rush hour traffic, the truck behind me almost drove into me, we were lucky it went to the side of the road. we are afraid to drive the jeep at this point. *tr

I have a 2005 jeep grand cherokee and the car started to stall sporadically. at first it just started when i stopped at the lamp posts or stop signs, after it started to stall sporadically anytime. i looked up on the internet and found that jeep already recalled several grand cherokees because of the front control module issue. i called jeep line and they told me that i should take it to the service as it could be a recall issue. i took my jeep to the service (john hoffer, topeka, ks) on 2/22/2010 when they changed some pump and they said it is fixed; it was not and the car died on me 3 times, i took back the car to the service and they told called me that i have a front control module issue and we need to change it. i called jeep right away gave them my vin and they told me that yes it was a recall issue about this module, but they are sorry my vehicle is not in the recalled ones and i have to pay the 1200 usd to change the module. my questions: who is responsible this safety issue as the vehicle could stop in the middle of the highway? if jeep recalled several thousands of vehicles about the same issue how could they say that it i not their problem? *tr

My 2005 jeep grand cherokee keeps stalling while driving! the dealerships do not seem to know how to fix it. it has happened 5 times in the past 6 months. there is no steering when this happens and cars behind me had to slam on brakes to avoid hitting me! if you search the jeep blogs, you will see this is happening to everyone! please help. this is not safe and is putting my life and my child's life in danger. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee laredo. the contact stated the vehicle stalled while driving approximately 65 mph. upon restart the vehicle operated as normal. no warning lights were illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where they were unable to diagnose the failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but offered no assistance because the dealer was unable to diagnose the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 45,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee laredo. he stated that while driving 45 mph the dashboard lights illuminated and the vehicle shut off and lost power steering , and brakes. he had time to drive into the emergency lane; however, after a few minutes, he attempted to restart the vehicle and was unsuccessful. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and after 24 hours they could not duplicate the failure. in two months this has occurred approximately 3 times. the dealer stated that there were no related recalls. the contact has done extensive research and found that the failure is common for his year, make and model vehicle. the failure mileage was 54000 and the current mileage was 55000.

2005 jeep grand cherokee stalled at stop sign. *tr

2005 jeep grand cherokee engine stalls out twice on interstate while traveling with total loss of power, once in parking garage on turn , once going up hill twice at stop sign , another time twice in one 15 minute trip diagnostics showed nothing. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. the contact noticed a massive hesitation with his vehicle. the vehicle would not start and the dealer was notified. the vehicle was towed to a repair shop and a new starter was installed. after the repair was performed, the check engine indicator illuminated. he went through a drive-thru car wash and noticed that the vehicle began to hesitate. when he placed extra pressure on the accelerator pedal, the vehicle would stutter and then finally catch and increase in speed. the dealer performed a tune-up, but the failure persisted. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer, but they could not pinpoint the cause of the failure. the manufacturer has not been notified. the current mileage was 57,802 and failure mileage was approximately 57,400. updated 03-04-09 *bf the consumer stated a code for the o2 sensor heater was being displayed. the engine light is still on. updated 03/04/09 *jb

My jeep grand cherokee stalls. no rhyme no reason to it. usually low speed but not exclusive. it has the 4.7 liter engine, this is dangerous as there is no warning. dealer has no solution to this as no codes are set. *tr

1. my 2005 jeep grand cherokee unexpectedly can stall, typically when the vehicle is moving at less than 15-20 mph. unfortunately, no warnings are given by the vehicle as the engine simply stalls and dies. no computer error codes are displayed or registered. the stalling occurs both in forward and reverse. often the stalling occurs when the engine seems to either down shift or up shift in lower gears. the stalling is a safety issue as the unexpected and unpredictable stalling often occurs at stop lights/intersections or parking lots. the problem appears to me to be a coupling between the computer controller/software, the rpm sensor, and the transmission gear box. 2. the failure is intermittent and unpredictable. when the computer fails to "catch" the rpms fall rapidly and the engine stalls and dies. consequence is that the vehicle can stop suddenly in the middle of an intersection or parking lot. the failures have occurred multiple times. 3. despite several computer flashes and maintenance on the "solenoid-linear iacv," jeep has failed to resolve the problem. chrysler-jeep gives the run-around. the dealer says that they can help anymore; the regional manager doesn't recognize it as a safety issue; corporate chrysler-jeep doesn't see it as an issue. *tr

The air conditioning was only working on the driver's side of the vehicle only. the passenger side and the rear vents blow out warm air. the event started occurring on november 20, 2008 and is still not working properly. the vehicle is currently being repaired at a jeep dealership and is going to cost approx. $1,200.00 dollars. apparently there is a problem with the vent doors and they need to replace the entire unit. the heat most likely will not work properly due to the doors not sealing properly. *tr

Vehicle stalls, steering locks while moving at high speed due to apparent software malfunction. *tr

I have a 2005 jeep grand cherokee laredo, 3.7l engine, automatic transmission. when driving, the vehicle will just shut off as if the key was turned off, losing all power. the vehicle will start afterwards and the check engine light will stay on for a few hours this has been going on for a couple years. this problem is similar to the recall on the 2008 grand cherokee stalling and i think this problem is more wide spread than chrysler wants to admit. i have an appointment with a jeep dealer who recently relocated in my area next week. *tr

When slowing down approaching a hard stop, my 2005 jeep grand cherokee ltd shuts off. this happens about once every six weeks. the dealer cannot figure out why it does this. i've narrowly avoided going over a hill, drifting back into cars behind me while stopping up a hill, and almost causing an accident in rush hour traffic. the dealer said unless the computer registers a code, there is no way they can fix. they refuse to send this up to the district manager for referral to chyrsler hq. i see on the internet there are numerous models encountering this issue. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. while driving approximately 35 mph on normal road conditions; the vehicle stalled without warning . the driver was able to coast into the emergency lane. the contact was able to restart the vehicle the failure occurred intermittently. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection. the technician was unable to duplicate the failure. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer on two separate occasions for the identical failures which there no resolutions. the contact had concerns of the safety risk involved. the failure mileage was 38,000 and the current mileage was 56,000. the vin was unavailable.

Our 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited 5.7l has stalled out three times after purchasing used in 2007. this has happened twice while traveling 65 miles per hour on an interstate and once while backing out of the driveway. each time the vehicle stalls out, the entire car shuts down, including electronics. each time the vehicle has restarted without trouble. *tr

2005 jeep grand cherokee idler pulley broke resulting in a need for replacement along with the serpentine belt. *tr

2005 jeep grand cherokee 4.7 limited. purchased car ... 2nd owner... with 21k on the odometer. car constantly stalled... i had one spell where just about everytime i stopped the car stalled. how dangerous and crazy is this? i brought the car under warranty and jeep kept trying to fix it. 2 weeks later issue would be back. after 5 dealer visits now the car has only stalled twice in the last 3k miles. still its ridiculous. daimler chrylser needs to step up and figure this out now b4 more people get hurt. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. while driving between 50-60 mph, the vehicle shut off and would not restart. the vehicle had to be towed to the dealer and they stated that the cam sensor needed to be replaced. the failure has occurred intermittently ever since the vehicle was purchased. the purchase date was unknown. the current mileage was 53,000 and failure mileage was 100. updated 7/3/08 *cn updated 07/03/08

2005 jeep engine light comes on periodically, they have not been able to tell me what is wrong with it. i had the car inspected while the light was on, it passed the safety inspection, but not emmisions.the rapid oil cchange center didn't know what the emission problem was, they told me i ihad to take it to the dealer. i made appointmnet with dealer,, i drop car off, the darn light is off!!!! the dealer say they cannot help me, my lease is up in two months, and that i have 6 days left on the emmision warrenty and there is nothing they can do unless the light is on.... i know that light will come back on the 7th day. i have documentation the light was on because the inspection wouldn't clear a few days back......i want the warrenty extended. *tr

My 2005 jeep grand cherokee caught fire in the engine area and was destroyed..i was traveling to nyc from vermont on 2/20/08...fire took place in newtown ct........ *tr

While slowing to a stop, engine dies and vehicle loses all power steering and brakes making vehicle extremely unsafe. this has just begun happening on this vehicle at approx. 28,000 miles. however, it has happened twice in the past two days. *tr

I own a 2005 4.7 liter v8 grand cherokee. since my purchase (two years ago), the engine has idled rough almost the entire time and completely shut off while driving about 8 times. *tr

This is the second complaint i have filed concerning this problem. this is a continual issue that, if left uncorrected, will eventually cause an accident. my 2005 jeep grand cherokee (4.7l at) stalls or nearly stalls while coming to a stop, or accelerating from a stop. the last reported incident occurred while approaching a stoplight. since that initial complaint, i have spent 19 hours over 3 visits to the dealer trying to identify the problem. after replacing a solenoid in the throttle assembly, the condition seemed to improve, but has since regressed to pre-repair status. i have received no feedback concerning my original complaint from nhtsa, nor have i been notified by daimler-chrysler of any developments in correcting this problem. relying on dc's initiative to determine the cause and necessary repair for this issue seems irresponsible since they haven't done so in the two years that my model has been on the street. also, if it were not for the personal initiative of the mechanic that replaced the solenoid, i wouldn't have received any help with my problem. the dealer position was that there was no computer registered event, so therefore, the stalling had not occurred. when they could personally observe the event, and capture it in the vehicle computer, they would investigate further to see if any repair was warranted. the survey below asks about property damage, deaths, and fires. do i need to actually have one of these events occur to my family to flag my complaint for appropriate action? knowing a vehicle stalls while braking and accelerating at highway speeds and not aggressively determining the cause until a fatal accident occurs seems irresponsible. hopefully, i do not hear about this inevitable recall the same way my firestone patron pal did. (from the tow truck operator, post-accident). please contact me with the status of this problem as well as instructions of how to get my vehicle repaired correctly. *tr

Our 2005 jeep grand cherokee has started cutting out or stalling. engine just stops. my son was almost in a major collision when he couldn't get the car out of the intersection. thank god there was no accident. maybe if more people complained - i hate to see lives lost- what will it take for a recall- jeep repair states resetting the drive train should help.. does it???? *tr

2005 jeep grand cherokee 4.7l 4wd. engine idles rough and stalls when brakes are applied. reported to dealerships for servicing on multiple occasions. unable to resolve. *tr

I have taken my 2005 jeep grand cherokee into the dealership 3 times for rough idle and stalling issues. they informed my that it was the spark plugs and needed a throttle body cleaning. so i paid to have those things done. then, 2 days after the service was performed, i was driving and my vehicle shut off. i was in the middle of traffic and lost ability to steer and brake. luckily i was able to safely move on the shoulder and avoid a collision. i have done quite a bit of research online about this problem, and there are many people who have the same problem with their 4.7 gc and commanders. *tr

The jeep grand cherokee ( 2005 ) with the 4.7 v8 will stall intermittantly. it is very dangerous to lose all power brakes etc when stopping. i have 2 small children and am scared to have them in the vehicle. accident almost caused!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *tr

My 2005 jeep grand cherokee(4.7) with 58,000 miles overheated and stalled as i was pulling a small cargo trailer. the jeep is equipped with a transmission cooler and up until this incident i've had no overheating problems. when i popped the hood there was coolant every where. the jeep was towed to service garage and was diagnosed with a failed water pump. the day i picked up my "fixed" jeep i noticed a strange sound coming from the engine ... i took the jeep back to my service garage and they told me my a/c compressor was failing and upon checking with the local parts supplier, my mechanic told me he could not buy a replacement compressor ... i must go to a jeep dealer. i did and was told there was a national back order and i would have to wait at least 3 weeks for a replacement. keep in mind the engine has one belt, so at any time the compressor could freeze up and i would not be able to drive the vehicle once the belt broke. i did a lot of phone calling and found a compressor in illinois .. it was delivered and installed for $550.00. so, within a week i spent over $900.00 for repairs. the jeep was a dealer demo, so i was out of warranty even though i bought the jeep with less than 1,000 miles on it. *tr

Turning left to enter major highway and the engine stalls with loss of power steering and power brakes. *tr

I purchased a 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited w/ a 4.7l v8 engine in early 2005 from hunter chrysler in charlotte, nc , now owned by metrolina chrysler, south blvd, charlotte,nc. since the vehicle was brand new it stalled on numerous occasions - sometimes when i was at a stop, and other times when the vehicle was at rated speeds! i took it to the dealer at least 5-6 times for this problem, and they have finally admitted that chrysler was aware of the problems on this engine, but no one could offer a solution. i have talked to several chrysler representatives, who were always very courteous, but no one has offered a solution. the last chrsyler representative said the only thing he could do was to recommend to me to trade the vehicle in. when i explained that i would take a loss on the trade-in value , less than two years old but 48000 miles he suggested that a chrysler district manager would be in contact and could maybe help soften the financial blow. it has been two weeks and i have heard nothing. meanwhile the vehicle kept stalling and i was afraid that i will get into an accident and get hurt or worse. my wife will no longer drive the vehicle. please help. *ak

2005 grand jeep cherokee laredo stalls on turns. i lose power steering and brakes. it has approximately 45,000 miles and has a v8. it has stalled a few times a couple months back and i had taken my jeep to a jeep dealership and they could not find anything wrong. when it stalled a few days ago i almost hit a building. it stalls when i am braking and making a turn. each time i have almost been in a series accident. it is very scary and happens randomly. i am calling the dealership once again. if they can not do anything i am contacting jeep.*ak

Since 4/24/07, my 2005 jeep grand cherokee will intermittently fail to start. this typically has happened after driving it throughout the day without incident. (only once did it happen early in the morning after sitting all night.) for the first two failures, jumping the battery was successful. the third incident, where the jump didn't work, led to the battery being replaced, although the old battery was never diagnosed as faulty. when the car failed to start with the new battery, the keys were re-coded by a jeep dealer. it then failed to start with the newly coded keys. the ignition was eliminated as a problem, and the starter was replaced (with an after-market product). when the car failed to start again, the starter was replaced a second time (with a chrysler part) and the ignition once again was diagnosed as working. after the next failure to start, a temperature sensor in the transmission was replaced. when the car again failed to start, i was told the newly replaced temperature sensor was faulty, it was being replaced, and the car would be ready the next day. now, three days after being told the car would be ready,i'm told that no one knows what the problem is, although the diagnostics now indicate there is a problem. i was told by the current jeep dealer servicing it that no one could be consulted at chrysler until the problem could be replicated. (although it is a timely process, the problem has been replicated while in repair.) it is now august 3, 2007, and for the last 102 days my grand cherokee has been in and out of repair for weeks at a time. when i have had access to it, i have not been able to drive it with any confidence. the dealer (not a jeep dealer) where i purchased this car has been loaning me vehicles and they have been exceptional in their concern, despite anyone's ability to resolve this. their daily attention my faulty vehicle is the only reason, as a first-time jeep grand cherokee owner, that i have been able to stay on the road today. *tr

Car accelerated rapidly on four separate occasions without touching accelerator. despite pressing hard on brake pedal, car engine sped up and spun two wheels making black tire marks on pavement. now at dealer for diagnosis. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 jeep grand cherokee. while approaching a stop at approximately 5 mph, the vehicle completely shut off. the contact had to place the vehicle into park in order for it to restart. the failure occurs most frequently when making left turns. the vehicle was taken to the dealer three times, but they were unable to determine the cause of the failure. the current mileage was 18,500 and failure mileage was 15,000.

Oil changed routinely around 3000 miles. cold morning -3 fahrenheit. let car warm up for 5-10 minutes. drove 5 miles to work. when stopped at a light on the way to work i could smell hot oil. i thought it was the car in front of me. after i parked in the car i noticed a large amount of smoke coming from my hood. i immediately popped the hood to see what was going on. there were approximately 3 inch tall flames on the exhaust manifold for about 6 inches along the manifold. since the engine was off the flames died out and did not ignite the car. the valve cover gasket had failed and was leaking oil out on the exhaust manifold. dealer thought the pcv valve might have had moisture in it and froze. this caused excess pressure to build and popped the valve cover gasket the weakest point. dealer replaced valve cover, valve cover gasket, and pcv valve. failure again: exactly 2 weeks after the first failure. same scenario, it was 3 degrees this time and i let the car warm up for less than a minute. this time though there was no fire. dealer tore deeper into the engine and found the oil had sludged up. i had just changed my oil a month ago and 1000 miles previous. the sludge caused moisture to be trapped in the pcv valve and freeze. the sludge also was found in every component the oil lubricates. when i asked the dealer what i can do to prevent this from happening again they told me to change my oil as recommended. i already do that. they suggested that since i first saw this failure at 35000 miles, i should have my engine torn apart every 35000 miles to have the sludge removed. they told me they have seen the sludging problem before and chrysler is aware of it. chrysler will not cover the sludge clean up once it is out of warranty at 36000 miles.
