Recently reported VISIBILITY problems on 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The blend doors on my jeep are not functioning properly. the heater and defroster blow cold air. i have heard that this is happening so frequently that the parts needed to fix it are on national back order. *jb

The heater in my vehicle is no longer providing heat in order to keep windshield frost free causing poor visibility. *jb

No specific event led to the failure. turned the car on one day and the heat/defrost system no longer worked. *nm

Auto climate control system problems, blow cold air from one side and hot from the other visibility: defroster/defogger system:windshield:blower. *nm

Blend door on a 2004 jeep grand cherokee. *jb

2004 grand cherokee limited 43,000 miles no heat on passenger side. purchased used at 38,000 miles from chrysler dealer. florida resident and did not try heat until december. *nm

Ac/heater wj 2004 grand cherokee blend doors. *jb

1) when purchased passenger side vent always made noise after shutdown 2) passenger side heat stopped working completely..blows cold air in winter 3)not yet fixed due to high costs. *jb

2004 jeep grand cherokee 'blend door' breaks causing no heat to get to the windshield for defrosting. dealerships state it is a $1200 - $1500 fix and it is very common for this problem to occur on most trucks of this model year. in winter months you cannot defrost your windshield or get heat to the interior. this fix is a mechanical flaw, not an owner issue yet chrysler makes you pay to repair their faulty engineering. *nm

When driving my 2004 jeep grand cherokee in cold weather with rain or any moisture on the windshield the hvac ducts will blow cold air on the windshield causing the windshield to freeze quicker while decreasing my visibility while driving. the vehicle tends to have this problem 7 out of 10 starts and some times resets it self only when the jeep has been sitting for at least 3 to 5 hours. the dealer claimed it was in working order but i told them there is a serious problem that caused me to nearly hit the car in front of me while driving when the windshield instantly started to freeze up. luckily i kept spraying washer fluid to clear the window in time before i got into a major accident. *jb

Defective climate control blend doors causing poor/no defrost leading to poor visibility, which could result in crash. *jb

Vehicle defroster/defogger blows cold air only. *jb

When turn heat on cold air will come out. you will have to turn the head on and off so you can get heat to work. you should not have to do this to a 30.000 $ car!!!! this need to be fixed....this has happened a lots!!!! *jb

While driving, my rear right passenger side window assembly failed allowing window to slide all of the way down. the sudden noise startled me and nearly caused me to crash. this is the second time that this has occurred but the 1st time it happened to the front passenger side window. the dealer ship has charged me over $500 each time they replace the part. i reported this to daimler-chrysler and they told me the were "documenting my concern". i am scared to drive this vehicle. please warn others. *nm

Vent controls do not work. when defroster is on and change to vents or floor vents defroster stays on and will not change for several hours. was told by the dealer ship it was the blend door. *nm

Automatic climate control system failure leads to loss of windshield defroster. system failure is caused by failure of the blend doors to respond to user input. system failure results in loss of airflow through windshield defrost/defog vents. operation of vehicle during inclement weather and system failure will result in decreased visibility through front windshield which could contribute to collision, loss of vehicle control, etc... no manual override of automatic system is possible. repair requires removal of complete dash to remove and replace blend door assemblies. *nm

Blend door failure which comprised heat/defrost to passenger side of vehicle. *ak

The hvac unit does not work properly in the sense that the heat does not work in the winter and the a/c does not work in the summer. through some research online, this seems to be a big problem and needs fixing at the manufacturers expense. the cost to fix this problem is around $1000 and is one that should not happen. *nm

Wj blend door breakage - i am on my second door and it is still causing problems and blowing cold air - this is a very common problem and costs close to 1000 to fix. *jb

I returned to my car to find that the passenger window dropped down into the door. the car was taken to the dealership. dealership staff indicated that this is common in the 2004 jeeps. the cost to repair this is $480.00. *nm

While setting in 2004 grand cherokee limited, with driver window half down, i started to put up, when pop. like a rock hit it. then it fell into the door. getting estimate now in the range of $400.00. that day it was 100 degrees. this next week will see temp the same with thunderstorms popping up. *nm

2004 jeep grand cherokee hvac system blend doors have failed, so that automatic climate control system fails to control temperature and blows very hot or cold air at inappropriate times. impossible to maintain constant temperature in the vehicle. *jb

Visibility: defroster/defogger system:windshield:blower does your dashboard have a loud creaking sound coming from its underside when you turn on your ventilation? is there creaking from the dash seconds after shutting the engine off? are there strange numbers popping-up on your climate control display? does cold air blow from one side of the dash even when you have the heat turned on? your ventilation system may have failed, or, may be in the process of failing. all of the above questions have "yes" answers to them. this is a major safety hazard because without a ventilation system working (especially in the winter), the defroster does not work. in the event of cold weather, the driver is not able to defrost his window. this problem is too common in jeeps for there not to be a recall! *tr

Dual climate control system is and has failed and making noise while on, the dealer says there is nothing wrong but notes there is noise in the system. *tr

2004 jeep grand cherokee - hvac system exhibits loud creaking/groaning sounds from dash. also system exhibits widely fluctuating temperatures. the system is the electronic dual-zone climate control. dealers explanation "everything is fine, they all do that." *jb

04 grand cherokee, funny noises after car shuts off coming from dash for as long as i can remember. the just last week the right side vents started blowing only cold air. i just found out it is a $1500/2 day repair and that it happens "a lot" - so to me if this is a failure they know about for several years then i should not have to fix this myself. it is obviously a lemon part and it should be recalled. *ak

Wj blend door breakage/failure with 2004 jeep grand cherokees with electronic dual climate controls. hot or cold air blows uncontrollably on drivers side of dual air conditioning. i have been quoted $1500 to fix this problem, but this has been an ongoing problem with this vehicle since i have had it since 2005. with hot air blowing continually on drivers feet, this is a potential safety hazard. *tr

Several 1999-2004 jeep grand cherokees that i have owned (i have had 4) had their blender doors malfunction. this results in a $1600 fee to have the heat/cooling vents repaired so you can get ac or heat. it is a chronic jeep problem that deserves a recall as it happens to everyone's jeeps it seems. i have a current 2004 model where all three separate blender doors are broken resulting in no heat or cooling. *tr

Ac/heater makes noise when motor is shut off. ac/heater blows cold air regardless of temperature setting. *tr

2004 jeep grand cherokee with heated seat issue. consumer states that the vehicle has been taken to the dealer several times for the heated seat problem. she also states that there is a wire or rod poking through the driver seat. *kb the consumer also stated the transmission failed, there was a problem with the power steering, the blend doors in the heating system, the passenger side window fell down in to the door panel, and the hood struts failed. the consumer stated the heated seat issue had been recalled. the engine light illuminated and it was determined that the oxygen sensor needed to be replaced. *jb

No heat comng from vents on passenger side first and now driver side. *tr

During winter months, heat shuts off and turns cold. this happened during a snowstorm and i could not defrost the windshield. i consider this a serious safety issue. i had to stop engine, wait 5 minutes and start engine again. this has happened every time the car is driven. in the summer months, the reverse happens. suddenly, the air conditioner suddenly throws out hot air. *tr

The first time the driver side window fell into my door and it cost $200 to fix it, the second time the passenger side window fell into the door i contacted jeep and they paid half but because of labor cost i still paid $200, the third time was the back driver side window and now jeep refuses to pay. *jb

Normal operation of heating/cooling system. now, after 28,000 miles, temperature will suddenly change in the cabin of the vehicle. the heat will suddenly cease and the visibility will be lost out the windshield. i believe it may have something to do with "blend door". when the windshield frosts up, we have to pull over and turn car off and wait for system to reset. very dangerous, not safe, dealership estimates $1,500 to $2,000 to repair. *tr

Tl*- the contact stated that the 2004 jeep grand cherokee has problems in the winter weather when using the heater in the vehicle. the contact stated that when turning on the heat in the vehicle the passenger side air vents blows out cold air. he stated that while driving and the heat wasturned on the passenger side blew cold air and the windows become foggy. hewas unable to see clearly out of the windows. he had contacted the dealership, and was told that this is an ongoing complaint. the contact filed a complaint with the manufacturer, but has no case #. *ak

Window risers. 5 broken risers since the car was new. garaged with less than 75 k miles. according to the internet this is an item that should have been recalled and there are thousands of complaints about these failures. chrysler will not fix or respond. *tr

2004 jeep grand cherokee laredo, about 3 months ago, while putting the passenger front window up, it just fell into the door. today, the same exact thing happened to the driver side front window. see this issue over and over again on multiple forum/message boards. is anyone going to do anything about this? *nm

I have a 2004 jeep grand cherokee with 38,000 miles. the other day i was rolling up the driver side window when i heard a pop and noticed that the window was sinking into the door. turns out it was the window regulator. this seems to be a very common problem as you can find all sorts of mention of it in the forums online. 320 - 390.00 to fix as well. *jb

We were driving our 2004 jeep grand cherokee limited down an open highway (no trees, no cars around, etc.) at about 65 mph, and the sunroof exploded. it sounded like a gunshot, extremely loud. fortunately, we did not have the interior roof open, and the glass that shattered did not get inside the vehicle. we explained the situation to the jeep dealership, and they said the repair of our sunroof would not be covered under the warranty since they had never heard of this happening before. we noticed on the nhtsa web site (via another complaint) that this had happened before to someone else, and the scenario is almost exactly the same -- same vehicle, same year. the other complaint shown on this site was logged february 2005.*jb

I own a 2004 jeepgrand cherokee laredo, on july 13 aprox my window on the drivers side fell down and the window regulator had to be replaced at cost of $391. again on aprox july 22 the front passenger window fell down-same thing the regulator had to be replaced, again $391. i have the 2nd broken regulator. this caused the car to be open to 100+degree heat and vandalis as there was no way to secure it with out a window.i wrote to jeep manufacturer to no avail.

2004 jeep grand cherokee lost all electrical power inside vehicle on multiple occasions. *kb the consumer was told the problem was a faulty bcm. however, the same problem recurred one month later. in oct 2005, the consumer experienced unwanted acceleration while he was pulling into the garage and hit another vehicle. the consumer stated the check engine light would occasionally come on and then go of. then the rear hatch light would come on, the tire pressure light and the security system stopped working. the dealer then found a broken ground wire in the engine harness. the windows were inoperative.*jb

While driving a 2004 jeep grand cherokee on i495n going about 65 mph with the sun roof fully closed, the sun roof glass exploded, showering glass throughout the car. initially i thought someone threw a rock and struck the window, but we were not near an overpass, nor were trucks or other cars closs enough to toss a rock up in order to hit the moonroof glass. a rock was not found in the car upon inspection. the local jeep dealer said that it must have been a rock that hit the window and therefore would not be covered under the warranty. i think the window just failed from either stress or from a manufacturing defect...but how do i prove it?*ak

While driving with defrosters on, the heat suddenly turns to cold and does not defrost the windshield. was told by dealer that blend doors were defective and the dashboard had to be removed. this started happening about 6 months after i bought the car. this is a definite safety hazard since you can't de-ice the windshield while driving. i feel the manufacturer should make the needed repairs at no cost to the customer since this is very hazardous. *tr

Heater blend door made noise from the day vehicle was purchased. it also failed several times during normal operation over the last 4 years. no longer making noise but now only passenger side heater/ac vent works. defrosting windows ineffective with defective blend door. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 jeep grand cherokee. immediately upon purchasing the vehicle, the sunroof would open, but failed to close. the contact never left the dealer and was informed that it was an electrical failure. the window regulator motor was replaced; however, the failure occurred on two more occasions. the contact returned the vehicle to the dealer both times and the motor was repaired. shortly afterwards, the passenger side window fell inside the door. the contact returned to the dealer and was informed that the window cable failed. the mechanic repaired the window. shortly after that, when the driver's side door was shut, the rear window fell down into the door. the mechanic stated again that the power window regulator was defective and repaired the failure. the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not under warranty; therefore, she would not be reimbursed for the repair costs. the current mileage was 18,357 and failure mileage was 239.

Bought a 04 jeep grand cherokee laredo 2 weeks ago. when driving down the highway with both back windows down, a loud noise occurs sounding like a flat tire. if you crack a front window the noise goes away. i called the 800 number in the warranty book and they said it's a design flaw.*ak

Front power windows falling down. *ak

Visibility: defroster/defogger system:windshield:blower 2004 jeep gland cherokee limited the automatic temperature control has failed. one side of the vehicle blows hot air the other blows cold air. *tr

My wife and i own two jeep grand cherokees, a '99 the an '04. in 1999, jeep changed the design of their grand cherokees and one design change poses a safety risk to passengers in the back seats, especially young children. models produced starting in 1999 allow for the windows in the back seats to roll down, leaving a gap between the window and the frame on that part of the window closest to the rear seat passenger. the 1998 jeep allowed for the window to be rolled down and the gap between the window and the frame was at the front of the window, furthest from the passenger. on several occassions we have rolled down the windows and my children (ages 2 and 4) , attracted by having the wind hit their hand, have stuck their fingers between this gap area. when the windows are rolled up, their fingers get crushed between the window and the frame. i have previously contacted jeep about this problem and they were only concerned about was whether my children's fingers were broken. their solution, use the window locks on the driver's console. however, that does not solve the problem. i can only guarantee their hands are not in the windows by turning around and continuing to look as i roll the windows up. this is distracting and not a safe course of action. but this was their recommendation. my wife and i did not pay tens of thousands of dollars for vehicles that cause pain to our children. whether they have broken their fingers is irrelevent and really shows a lack of responsibility by jeep. i spoke to representatives of jeep and they are well aware of this problem. from our conversation, only if my chidren suffered broker fingers would they compensate us and/or correct the problem. apparently, no broken bones means its not their problem. i would think a company would rather be proactive and not reactive. (the date below is when the latest incident occured but this has occured multiple times.)

While driving 55 mph the closed sun roof exploded without warning. dealer repaired the problem but could not explain the cause of the problem to the consumer.*ak
