Recently reported VISIBILITY problems on 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Front windshield and passenger side windows fogging. ac making lots of noises. smell of coolant inside vehicle. *jb

Tl*the contact owns a 2001 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the front driver side window rolled down without warning. she was unable to roll it up using the electronic control. the dealer stated that the electric motor failed. approximately one year later, the same failure occurred on the front passenger side window. as of october 26, 2007, the dealer had not repaired the vehicle. the failure mileage was 75,000 and current mileage was 80,000. updated 12/12/07

Hvac blend doors broken in a position such that only cold air blows from system. this allows for no defrost of any of the front windows posing a significant hazard during winter travel. this is the second of this body style grand cherokee (99-04) i have owned, and both vehicles experienced the same failure between 50k and 60k miles. the first vehicle (1999) was repaired by heritage chrysler jeep in ozark, mo for about $1300.00. the second vehicle (2001) has just experienced the same problem over last winter and is now in need of repair. i believe that this condition exists due to a poor design from the manufacturer and that the threat involved from potential limited visibility in the winter, coupled with the significant cost of repair and safety concerns, warrants a recall. *jb

Heater malfunctioned on my 2001 jeep grand cherokee. it stopped producing heat on both sides of the vehicle, passenger and driver. thus preventing the defroster to work and leading to zero visibility while driving in the winter. freezing rain and snow will accumulate on the windshield preventing the driver from seeing the road. consequently this would cause seriously injuries, possibly death from a crash. dealer states this is a common problem and is probably a malfunctioning blend door. due to the location of these blend doors it creates the need to fully remove the dash from the vehicle. which is very costly for the consumer, costing near $2000.00 dollars to fix. *jb

When using heat during the fall/winter months in new hampshire, i can smell coolant from within the cabin. the windshield and windows are fogging really, really bad that causes visibility problems. this is a major safety issue. sometimes heat comes out of the passenger side vents, sometimes it doesn't. instead, cold air is blowing on the windshield. *nm

No heat passenger side, caused by poorly made "blend door "and installed in a manner that requires complete dash removal at a price reaching $1600. *nm

The dual climate control door and actuator on heater/ac failed and only blows cool air. the dealer says it will cost about $900 to fix and said it was a common problem on my 2001 jeep grand cherokee. too much to fix! *tr

I have had 3 different power windows fail on my 2001 grand cherokee. each time the entire motor mechanism has to be replaced at $450.+ each and all that is wrong is a small plastic nut on the end of a metal cord. this is ridiculous. *jb

I own a jeep grand cherokee limited 2001. the passenger side heat and defroster did not work. the problem most likely happened when the vehicle was still under the extended warranty, but was not discovered until after the warranty expired. the warranty expired sometime in august, and i turned the heat on in september. chrysler refused to cover any cost of the repair. also, after researching the issue i found out it was a wide spread problem with the jeep products. repair the problem is expensive and risky. an attempted repair could cause electrical and coolant problems. it seemed to range in cost from $1000.00 to $2000.00. i received an estimate in the $2000.00 range. here was the link to the web site showing others with the issue: http://www.topix.net/forum/autos/jeep-grand-cherokee/tserat48371icob68/p6 . *ak

Ac/heater not blowing hot air..causing window to frost and ice up...not covered under warranty...blend doors....lots of complaints....very serious, windshield frosting over when driving!! *nm

Description : i own a 2001 jeep grand cherokee limited with 100,000 miles. the events leading up to the failure of the ventilation system were (1) rapid fogging of front windshield,(2) fogging of front passenger windows,(3) failure of passenger heat while still maintaining driver heat function, and (4) only cold air release on passenger side of jeep. consequently,(1) the windshield and front windows do not defog, and (2) no heat whatsoever comes from the passenger side floor and dashboard ventilation system. to correct this problem, a "blend air door" is necessary at a cost of approximately $1,200 inclusive of 7 hours of labor. according to the certified service department at the local jeep dealer and online forums, this has become a very common problem for 2000-2004 jeep grand cherokee limiteds with duel zone ventilation systems. *tr

Heater failure causes the windshield to fog over and since there is no heat it won't defog it. this causes me to have to wipe the windshield with my hands/napkins. could be very dangerous if this happens while driving in traffic or at night. *nm

The passenger side heating on the 2001 jeep grand cherokee limited quit working. *ak

Ventilation system in 2001 grand cherokee blowing cold air and just not functioning. when windows were fogged the system will not clear window and could become a safety hazard.*ak

The hvac system in my vehicle quit supplying heat to the defroster vents and passenger side vents. on cold mornings it was very difficult to clear the moisture and frost from the windshield and windows. often times i had to drive with them fogged up due to the defroster not working. the cause was determined to be broken blend doors and failed motors inside the hvac system. i had to pay my local dealer $400 to get the problem fixed because i could not drive safely without the defrost working. they had to replace the driver and passenger blend doors and motors and the mode door and motor. the dealer decided to pay for the labor because they knew it was a very common problem. otherwise it would of cost me $1000 to fix. this failure is very common on the limited and overland (1999-2004) models that have the dual zone hvac system. it is also annoying that the dealers and the manufacture know this is common and don't issue a safety recall. *nm

The left power window failed. i have only 50,000 miles and i took it to the dealer and the cost is $450.00. on the evening before this incident, i had all windows up. but on the next morning the left window was down and would not go back up. i took the jeep to the dealership they acted like it was a common occurrence. the mechanic knew the problem immediately before i could finish explaining what was wrong. the power mechanism had failed. the mechanic said that the window could down when the mechanism fails. this tells me that a lot reports to repair the power windows. of course nothing is being done about this problem by chyrsler. the mechanic told me without even looking for the pricing how much it was going to cost me. that's odd! i have never been to a mechanic and he did not have to get a pricing on the parts and then add in the labor. this mechanic had all the costs built into his head. the power window mechanism is defected and should be recalled. *jb

I turned on my heat one day and it was only cold air. took it to jeep they said it was a blend door and a common problem. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated the driver side window did not go down. the vehicle was taken to the service, who determined the window regulator fractured.

Blend door problems. very cold air blowing instead of heat. *jb

Loud creaking noises coming from the dashboard when i turn on the ventilation system. *jb

Both front window motors failed in a 6 month period. *jb

Window front mechanism left side and right side broke twice on 3 jeeps that i owned all 2001. window did not go up on 3 separate occasions had to change the mechanism. miles varied but all 3 where 2001 jeeps grand cherokee. last incident noted on date you are asking. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated the exterior rearview mirrors do not stay in the position the power controls have set. the mirrors adjust up or down on their own. an independent repair shop determined the motor for the mirrors needed to be replaced. updated 05/30/2006. *ak

Passenger side window stopped working and fell into door in 2005. driver side window has now done the same thing in 2006. first time it cost me over $300 to repair, i'm sure this second time it will be the same. obviously, there is a defective part here, since it has happened twice it is not just normal wear and tear. this problem is out there all over the internet - chrysler/jeep needs to recall and repair this issue. *nm

Both the front driver side and the front passenger side window motor have to be replaced within one month of each other. *jb

Power window failure on 2 of 4 windows. *jb

Passenger side vents emitted cold air when heat was on and wasn't functioning properly. brought to mechanic who replaced failed activator at a costs of $787.50. *jb

Power windows broke and the car only has 50,000 miles it is a 2001 jeep grand cherokee. the power windows break in the doors. costing $450.00 to repair. the vehicle is always been kept in the garage. we have had them both break on the front doors in the three months. *jb

(1) increasing frequency of defroster/heater/ventilation system malfunction (2) air of the wrong temperature will come from the vents, or more often -and more importantly, no air will come from the vents, including the windshield defroster vents, even though the blower is obviously working. i am often unable to clear windshield of condensation in order see well enough to drive safely. (3) the dealership tells me it will cost $2500.00 to fix the problem, and i can't afford that. so nothing has been done to fix the problem. *nm

Passenger side digital climate controls do not work. passenger side ventilation system blows cold air only. passenger side heated seat doesn't work. *jb

Hvac system's blend door actuator for passenger side climate control has failed. repair cost is well over $1000 and cannot be fixed by consumer. many thousand customers reported problems with this exact system. *tr

Blend door on jeep grand cherokee. *nm

Cold air blows out of defroster vents, even when setting is turned up to high heat. *nm

The window regulator assembly on our vehicle (2001 jeep grand cherokee) has broken on both the driver's side and passenger side windows. it costs us almost $600/window to repair. the part alone costs $330. we have never had this happen in any other vehicle we've owned, and we have owned other jeep vehicles, along with 25+ other cars. *jb

I have had to replace both front window regulators on my 2001 grand cherokee laredo. i purchased this vehicle used with 45,000 miles on it. both times this has happened before going away on vacations. i have a warranty with the dealership and have had to pay $100 deductible each time. from reading this site, it seems like a known problem. don't know why there isn't a recall on these items. i have also had to replace two electronic modules in the transmission that the dealership told me never go bad. paid over $800 for these, which were not covered. *jb

2001 jeep grand cherokee limited; the blend air door is broken. therefore, only cold air blows out of the passenger side of the car, including the defroster. keeping the car defrosted in certain winter conditions is difficult and dangerous. this is an ongoing problem and based on two jeep dealers that i have talked to (and various internet sites), this is a common problem and extremely expensive to repair. *jb

My passenger side air vents suddenly started blowing cold air in 2005. when i took it to the shop i was told it was the blend door which would require removing the whole dash and cost approximately $800. i asked if there was a recall on this problem since it appeared to be a manufacturer's defective problem. i was told there was no recall, but that made no sense to me. i did some research and found that i am not alone in the problem. something should be done about this because many people can't afford such a costly manufacturer's defect repair. *tr

we purchased a 2001 grand cherokee limited from a local dealership with 50,000 miles in may of 2005. no heat from both passenger or drivers side vents. blend door hinges separated and inop. recirculation door also inoperable vehicle had 53,500 miles at this time. drivers seat heater failed at 65,000 miles. pcm failed at 75,000 miles and this was the only repair covered under warranty. the jeep now has 81,000 miles and we have had vibration and pedal pulsation from the front brakes three times since we purchased the vehicle. *jb

Passenger side of jeep grand cherokee blows cold only cold air. must be a popular problem. repair cost exceed $1200 and a respectable dealer or repair shop. *tr updated 09/10/*07 *tr

My heater and defroster does not work. this is known problem related to the blend door failure with jeep grand cherokees with dual climate control. this is very dangerous in icy weather. *jb

1. window regulator faulty: 1st incident occurred 9/2003 at 40,000 mi; driver window fell down due to faulty window regulator. although warranty had expired, manufacture replaced, charged me $50 deductible. 2nd incident occurred 11/05 at 79,700 mi.; front passing window, it fell down due to faulty window regulator. dealer stated known problem, as did daimler chrysler, but told me i would have to file a complaint with nhtsa. was told that is what extended warranty is for. (they apparently do not back their product and are not quick to resolve known defects.) 2. 12/2004 transmission problems (clutch ring): car would not go in reverse; shifting rough. was told known problem and was told i was lucky that it wasn't the whole transmission. repairs approximately $600. 3. brake problems: warped rotors/calipers/pads replaced at 24,000. i am currently on 3rd set of brakes (just now have 80,000 mi on car). last set did not last a year. premature warping, squeaking brakes, rattling car, steering wheel, just like the other complaints listed at nhtsa. have had a few near accidents due to the shaking. replaced at my expense except for the 24,000 mi job. 4. emissions code on check engine light: due to faulty gas cap. dealer charged me $100 for the diagnostics, and almost 18 for a gas cap. i have never heard of such a think, and feel it is something the mfg should be responsible for since it is an environmental issue. again, was told i was lucky that it was only a gas cap?? why should i feel lucky when i spend $28,000 for a car that has known issues with the model and the mfg acts as if they didn't care, and tells me i should pay $2500 for an extended warranty. no, they should fix the known problems. we pay that much under the misconception that they stand by their product. as a result, i have problems with tires wearing out sooner than they should and front end alignment issues. *jb

(1) none (2) the heater to my 2001 grand cherokee limited no longer functioned, only cold air flowed from the air vents regardless of the temperature selected. (3) i took the vehicle into a jeep dealership and they told me the blend doors were broken and needed to be replaced to fix the problem. the estimated cost was $1,400 and the extended warranty i bought from chrysler did not cover the problem. i am still saving up money so that i can have the repair done. this has caused great discomfort to myself and my passengers these past two winters. *jb

Windows fog up due to failure of hvac system. failure is caused by a defective part and is noted in jeep tsb (#24-001-04). jeep has redesigned the hvac housing. the failure of this part can cause the windows to quickly fog due to the failure of the system to blow air out of the defrost vents. our failure occurred while driving in the morning. the failed part is a mode door activator (part of the hvac housing). jeep knows that this part fails and has since redesigned the part. jeep is letting a known safety defect continue without a recall. most likely this is due to the high cost of component replacement. fortunately we did not have a traffic incident.*jb

Driving to school one day and heat stopped working on driver side. started to blow cold air instead. the consequences are that it is really cold when driving in the winter. i am a college student and don't have the money to fix the mid-case blend assembly and the air recirculation assembly. repair shop cost is $900.00. *tr

Like many, the hvac blend and recirculation doors failed prematurely, along with the evaporator core. the fx involved removal of the dash, which will never be right again, and approximately $2000 in repairs.*jb

I walked out of my house this morning and found that my rear passenger window had slid down leaving my 2001 jeep grand cherokee open. this is the 4th window that has done this (including one where my vehicle was parked in a public parking lot and the drivers window as i was approaching a stop light in a bad neighborhood). i filed a report when the third window dropped as well. i called chrysler both this time and last time and they weren't interested and suggested that if it's a problem then i should call you.

Blend door on air conditione/heater faied. it cost over $1000 to have fixed to get the heater back operational only to have it fail less than a year later which the dealership won't warranty. *ak

Approximately 5 years ago, the heat stopped working on the passenger side of my 2001 jeep grand cherokee. then last year, the heat and a/c stopped working completely. this makes for very dangerous driving conditions as visibility is greatly reduced at times. its too costly for me to repair myself. it appears that this is a problem for most of these vehicles and i can't understand why something hasn't been done about it. also, the passenger side seat heating element stopped working after it apparently shorted out, luckily, no fire occurred. and the hydraulics through out the vehicle have stopped working and i noticed this when first the hood came down on my head and then the rear window! i've also had to replace the engine and it was due to problems with the coolant/hydraulic fan...at a price tag of $4000.00... *tr

The event leading to the window regulator braking was use of the window. the regulator failed at 32,485 miles. the window would not stay up. the jeep dealer was able to repair the problem with new parts. i have found while looking through the nhtsa website that this is yet one more example of chrysler's poor quality components that i can look forward to replacing regularly just as i have had to replace the warped rotors every 12,000 to 15,000 miles. *jb

Dt: in two weeks had both front window motors replaced. the first one was the passenger side and currently the drivers side. dealer replaced the passenger side motor ,and the vehicle was at the dealer for the drivers side. manufacturer has not been contacted yet.*ak
