Problems with 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee SEATS

On average, the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee starts to “feel” problems with the SEATS and its various aspects after 115 364 miles.

Recently reported SEATS problems on 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Dt: the consumer stated that 2000 jeep grand cherokee was having an problem with the front sea slider that adjusted the seat on driver's side. the bolt was going through the bracket. the seat was rocking back and forth. the consumer noticed this about 2 months ago when the bolt was dislodging and making a clinging sound. the consumer investigated the noise further and found that the bolt was coming through the bracket. the consumer was on the nhtsa website and found that there were other complaints on this issue. the consumer was taking the jeep in for repairs tomorrow. *ak

no event caused this failure . car has not been in accident or misused ever. the drivers seat broke free from the sliders. metal actually ripped around bolts. caused seat to fall backward as i was driving. currently have seat clamped to seat bracket as i look for new ones. jeep swears its not a big problem as it made millions of grand cherokees. seats can't be found in junk yards and thousands of complaints online. i wonder how many have been injured or died because of accidents caused by seat failure. guess its hard to tell as i am sure failure of seat blamed on accident most of time. *tr

Dt: was driving and noticed the seat wobbling, seat mount adjuster angle bracket broken on driver's side seat. angle bracket failed. contact felt it was a design flaw. dealer stated he saw bracket failure before on other vehicles. manufacturer will not help. *ak

The seat frame on the driver's seat broke, causing the seat to wobble precariously while driving. i had it welded, but it subsequently broke in another place. based on internet research, i repaired that break with a bolt and nut. subsequently, the frame broke in another place. i attempted another repair, with poor results. it has now broken again, in a fourth place. the seat frame is made of rather thin steel, not as thick as that of a good cooking pot. the seat has not been abused or misused in any way, and i find by internet research that this is a common problem. my mechanic described the seat frame as being "made from a soup can." this is a very dangerous situation, and i hesitate to replace it with a (quite expensive) used replacement, as i fear it will only break again. *tr

Have a 2000 jeep gc. driver's seat wobbly for several years. finally realized the track was fractured in multiple places and got a new one. in chaining out the tracks, noticed that the seat frame is also fractured in multiple places. seat now being held on by two partially torn pieces of metal. only driver since the day it was new. 200 lbs. *tr

2000 grand cherokee was rear ended and the driver seat broke away from the floorboard.*mr the consumer stated when the seat broke, the cushion raised up and threw the her backwards and caused her to loose control of the vehicle. *jb

The entire driver side seat was raised from the floor and the consumer was thrown into the back seat after being rear ended. the bolts were lifted out of the floor. the vehicle was totaled. *jb

Driver seat frame continues to break causing severely hazardous driver positioning and an unsafe connection to the body of the vehicle in the case of an accident. *tr

I have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo and i am having issues with the drivers side seat. it has broken and i have fixed it and broken again. i took it to my repair shop for welding an when they took it out they found it was only being held together by fabric. i understand that vehicle parts have a lifespan and some require that they be replaced . the frame of the drivers seat should not be one of them. i'm looking at a $400-500.00 repair that i should not be responsible for. this is a serious safety issue that should have been resolved through a recall. the price for the replacement frame is over $300.00, not counting labor. i have looked at complaints online and this issue seems to be very common. you can't even find replacement seats at salvage yards. the big three have been underegineering vehicle parts for years for the purpose of future parts and vehicle sales. this approach is a major reason they are in the mess that they are in. the government, instead of throwing more billions at them needs to hold them accountable, especially in an instance like this where me and my families safety has been compromised. *tr

Seat bracket snapped, front left portion of seat bracket broke, seat now tilts backward. very dangerous to drive. also caused backrest to become unstable. caused severe back pain and discomfort. port jefferson jeep refused to repair, even under warranty. *tr

One of the steel brackets connecting the driver's seat in my 2000 grand cherokee broke away from the floor, leaving the seat (and me) to sway side to side and back and forth. i weigh 200 lbs. the car has never been in an accident. so, neither an accident or excesssive driver's weight contributed to this problem. i would guess that, if i were in an accident, the seat would probably break free from the floor. this is a highly dangerous problem that could be life threatening and should be investigated.*ak

While reclining the driver side seat the rail which was bolted to the seat adjustment assembly broke. the cause of the metal breaking has not been determined. *nm

The front drivers seat frame was broken. we were told that the seat should not have failed by the dealership. if we would have gotten into an accident the driver would have gone through the windshield because the the front seat frame was broken. this part was not even covered by the extended warranty we purchased from the dealership. we had a 100,000 mile -0- deductable warranty. we had to pay for the safety related parts that the dealership said should not have broken in the first place.

My sister and i were hit from behind on a major highway. and when the other car hit us, both our seats broke.*ak

2000 jeep grand cherokee. after four years of use, the driver seat disconnected from the metal frame attached to the floor of the car. i looked under the car seat and the metal had twisted away from the bolt anchoring the driver seat to the floor. i only weigh 190 pounds and i don't believe that this should happen after four years of use. it is a dangerous condition as the driver seat is no longer anchored to the floor. *ak

I have a jeep grand cherokee 2000. about the end of 2001 the drivers seat rail broke at the front bolt area causing the seat to be unstable and dangerous. i went to the dealer and, although out of warranty, they replaced it no charge. they were unsure why it happened. now, the week of 11-15-03 the front seat rail broke again in the same place. i drive long distances and put a lot of miles on a vehicle. i went to the dealer and was told it would cost $378. plus tax to have repaired. i also talked to a chrysler rep about the problem but was told that their seats were made for average size people ( i am 275 lbs) and they would not guarantee the new unit would not also break. i asked what was suppose to be average size and got no answer but that her husband was my size and she considered 275 to be average but that is not what is considered average by her company. when the first unit broke i was only 240. i told her this seem to be a safety issue due to the unit breaking under normal driving conditions and i asked what would happen if i had a rear end collision, is the energy from the crash going to send me flying through the back window because the seat rail isn't strong enough to keep from breaking? her answer was that their seats were made to nation safety standards. i find this problem unnerving that the rail just breaks without any undue stress and i am being blamed for the problem for my size. i have never heard of such a thing and wonder what is the weight standards for people to have safety in an automotive seat? please help. *la

Broken seat frame; drivers side seat frame is broken, and will not move foward . all other functions of the power seat work. i am only 225 lbs, how can this happen.and i will not spend $900 at the dealership to fix this, for the lack of quality that was put into this automobile when it was built. *ak

I purchased a 2000 jeep grand cherokee larado new in september of 2000. in june of 2003 without prior warning the driver's seat broke. the seat frame broke away from the track ripping a piece of metal underneath. this did not occur during any forceful action and i feel it could be an extremely dangerous safety hazard. chrysler will not take any responsibility for the cost of repairs. the part number that needs to be replaced is 4856471 per estimate i received from chrysler.

My vehicle hydroplaned and during the accident, the driver's seat broke off of the tracks and i sustained a laceration to the bottom of my right foot. i contacted chrysler about 2 weeks after the accident to report what happened. i was then contacted by an inspector from chrysler and after that i only know that the file has been sent to a law firm in washington d.c. apparently the company thought i was making a claim against them, which was never my intent. i would just like to know the results of the inspection. i saw a local lawyer yesterday 9/30/02 and he feels that i will never be able to obtain the inspection results because chrysler would be doing an injustice to themselves. could you please assist me with this matter or give me another contact who could do so. thank you for your time, susan hoagland mr

The drivers seat came loose. the bolts that hold it down tore out from the frame. the seat began to rock and made it difficult to drive.*ak

While traveling into a curve at approximately 35 mph, the seat frame broke underneath and made it easy for the seat to suddenly rock freely with a left-leaning to front and right-leaning to back motion, making the vehicle almost impossible to drive now. howard-wilson chrysler-plymouth-jeep in jackson, ms (where i've been having most of the service work performed on the jeep) was contacted about possible recall information, but i was advised that i'd be required to pay for the repair myself. i have not contacted the manufacturer or the dealership where the vehicle was originally purchased yet, but an estimate for the repair of this item was in excess of $400.00. i recently removed the seat from the vehicle at a local shop and tried to have the seat framed welded back together (because it's a clean separation of the metal on the front driver's side corner of the seat above where it attaches to the track), but the shop strongly advised against it for the likelihood of weaking the metal in that area and leaving the potential of it happening again, but even they had no idea how this particular breakage could have happened in the first place.*ak

Consumer was traveling about 50mph on highway and another vehicle suddenly stopped. in order for to avoid the other vehicle, she went into guardrail. when consumer applied anti-lock brakes vehicle skidded and locked up. interior rear seat wasn't proberly bolted , seat came out from floor. it was secued. front airbags didn't deploy. dealership was aware of problem. *ak

This jeep has numerous problems and has been to the dealership for service 4 time and they have failed to repair even 1 of our complaints. all complaints other than the pull to the right have been dismissed with the explanation of can not duplicate. they have tried to repair the pull to the right but it only got worse. we were told by a repair tech. that it needed a new part to correct the pulling to the right but chrysler has failed to install this needed part. we have requested a repurchase of the jeep under the lemon law but chrysler denied our request stating that the pull to the right is due to "road crown" and if you hold the steering wheel with a strong to medium grip you don't notice the pull to the right! we have this in writing from the arbitrator that chrysler hired. the dealership and chrysler attempted to conceal some service repair forms that had the loose rear hatch problem and the pull to the right. chrysler stated in letters to the attorney general that we had never brought the rear hatch alarm to the attention of the dealership which was disproved at arbitration but we still never received a copy of the repair sheet even though the dealership has it and provided a copy to the arbitrator. we have parked this jeep due to the increasing severity of problems. we think this jeep is dangerous due to it's numerous defects. we refuse to let anyone ride in the back for months due to the rear hatch (which the district manager for chrysler found was loose at the arbitration hearing by pushing on the bumper and hatch. *ak

Bearings came apart on seat glide assembly.stress on weaker parts caused assembly to fail.replaced under warranty.one year later the same thing occured on new assembly.the metal on the entire assembly has started to crack .i am forced to purchase a new seat that may also be defective.no longer under warranty.

Vehicle involved in a rear collision of 45 mph impact while waiting to make a left turn. upon impact, both air bags failed to deploy. also, driver's seatback rest collapsed, causing driver to lose control and collide into oncoming traffic. vehicle was totaled due to accident. dealer notified. *ak
