We have classified the 31 complaints from 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee about AIR BAGS into the following categories.
When exiting the express way yesterday, my airbag light turned on and dinged about 3 times and turned off. this is the first time my grand cherokee laredo has done this in the year that i have owned it. i'd like to note my previous car, a 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited, would have this issue everyday. it is not safe for my airbags to be disabling while my car is in motion. especially since it is having a stalling issue as well. this could be fatal given the right circumstances.
One week ago without warning at 35 mph going straight ahead car warning chime started and airbag warning light came on then went off. now it constantly blinks on at random times, no apparent reason, i.e., stopped, driving at various speeds straight ahead, left or right turns, up or down hills, starting off or parked. now becoming more and more frequent, sometimes for a minute or so it remains on, sometimes no more than for a few seconds. found numerous other similar complaints have been filed on this site when looking for any recall information.
Takata recall.
Takata air bag and fuel tank explosion on impact. as of the date of this report, i did not received any document from chrysler concerning theses 2 safety issue with my jeep. we are located in south florida. i've call some chrysler dealer in my area, and they say that there are no recall for my car concerning theses two safety issue. nothing has happen so far, but i don't want to continue playing the odd that noting will happen to the life of my wife,my children and myself when driving the jeep in florida. i will appreciate receiving any input from the nhtsa in that matter, and also a recall notice from chrysler to fix the two safety issue. the soonest will the best. thank you for addressing my concern. *tr
Tl* the contact owned a 2000 jeep grand cherokee. while driving 40 mph, the vehicle was involved in a crash, but the air bags did not deploy. the vehicle was destroyed. the contact sustained two cracked ribs and injuries to the head. medical attention was required. a police report was filed. the manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. the failure mileage was 105,000. updated 04/08/16*lj
Air bag light illuminates and chimes sporadically. i was told by jeep mechanic, the clock spring needs to be replaced at $370.00. this does not seem to be an isolated incidence.

Air bag light goes on and off constantly with chiming. will not stop. *tr
I don't remember too much but i just remember swerving to avoid hitting another vehicle (hit it anyway) and ended up hitting another vehicle head on (going in the opposite direction). his air bags deployed but mine didn't. *tr

My airbag light has been lit up on the dash for well over a year now and still beeping loudly at me every few minutes. i want to know why it's my responsibility to pay for this to be fixed at the the price of 450.00 (dealership quote)? there is no reason for why the clock spring should be broken and have to be fixed. i am not the only person complaining of this problem and i want to know why there hasn't been a recall on it? why is the 2000 year being skipped over for this jeep and the recalls of it?
This is just the beginning of my complaints, it will take another 3 or 4 of these forms to touch all of them. while running the heater with the fan going it started smelling like it was burning and then the blower quit running. it turned out to be the blower motor resistor. it had melted to the point of fusing the wires into the plastic which the resistor was made of. it was a fire hazard! the part cost us $270.00 not including labor. in the middle of a huge rainstorm the driver side window quit working and wouldn't go up, upon leaving the dealership and having the window mechanism replaced, the airbag light on the dash started intermittently chiming and has never stopped. the dealership said the clock spring needs to be replaced at $395.00. since i had just had to have the heater core fixed to keep it from dumping all over the carpet, i couldn't afford to fix it or have the a/c compressor clutch which was frozen, replaced either, another $702.00. i have owned this jeep since jan of 2012. beginning with a new motor i have paid for this vehicle 3 times over due to repairs and problems stemming from the factory and the cheap way it was built.
Tl* takata recall. the contact owns a 2000 jeep grand cherokee. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 15v046000 (air bags); however, the part needed to perform the repair was unavailable. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the manufacturer was not notified of the issue. the contact had not experienced a failure. vin tool confirms parts not available.
Air bag light illuminates and chimes sporadically. *tr
Blower motor resistor heated up to the point that there was smoke coming from under the passenger side glove compartment. after further investigation it was discovered that the wires and the resistor had both been charred and melted. not only do i no longer have any heat or a/c but i also no longer have a window defroster and this poses a serious safety issue to myself, any passengers i may have and as well to other drivers on the road. not to mention the fire that was only barely thwarted off.
While driving the abs light comes on and stays on along with air bag light and stays on. *tr
Airbag exhibits intermittent behavior. known clockspring defect. *kb
Tl* the contact owns a 2000 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the vehicle independently shifted out of park and into reverse. as a result, the contact's vehicle crashed into another vehicle. the air bags did not deploy. a police report was filed and there were no injuries. in addition, the vehicle stalled and was unable to restart. the vehicle was towed to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the technician stated that it was unknown if the transmission or the ignition needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 78,000.
Tl*the contact owns a 2000 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the clock spring failed which caused the cruise control, radio and horn to fail as well. the dealer confirmed the failure. the vehicle had not been repaired. the vin was unvailable. the current and failure mileages were approximately 80,000.
I have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo. after i hit 100k miles my airbag light continuously chimes. there seems to be a great deal of jeep users with the same issue. this seems to be an issue with the clock spring sensor. what happens if i don't replace or seek repair for this? is there something that gm can do to recall the part? i am out of warranty but this seems to be an issue with more than just my vehicle. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo. the contact stated that while driving 25 mph, the air bag warning light illuminated randomly. the failure would occur when the steering wheel was turned to the left. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing and the dealer stated the clock spring in the air bag needs to be replaced. the contact has not called the manufacturer. the contact was concerned with the safety issue involved. the failure mileage was 110,000.
Airbag warning light keeps going on in my 2000 jeep grand cherokee. *tr
The air bag warning light comes on in my 2000 grand cherokee while i am in idle and in motion. *tr
Approximately 3 weeks ago, my air bag light started coming on and alarming while i was driving. i looked in my owner's manual for information. it said i needed to contact my dealer. i did. the dealer, after a 3 hour inspection, gave me a diagnosis. the driver side air bag needs to be replaced. i asked how much this would cost. they gave me an estimate of approximately $1200 parts and labor. in these economic times, there is no way i can afford that. i asked the mechanic what was the worse case scenario if i did nothing. he said, "well, worse case, you are driving down the road and the bag deploys." i asked if they could unplug the system...they told me no. i can not afford to have this feature repaired. but, i also am horrified at the possibility of what could happen if the bag does deploy while i am driving. since this is a safety feature, i would hope that the jeep would stand behind it. a recall would help me greatly. *tr
Parked overnight and when return to get jeep the passenger air bag had deployed. there wasn't any collision or impact. there was evidence of the glove box had been melted and wires burned inside. *tr
My husband was involved in a near head on collision. he was traveling about 10 mph and was hit by a vehicle going about 35mph. his fender hit the center of our grill. our bumper was torn off, the hood pushed up to the windshield and the motor pushed to a 45 deg. angle. the jeeps airbags did not deploy, the other vehicles did. *tr
I have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee..insurance totaled it..front end collision..air bags did not deploy. car had 88,000...miles. *tr
I purchased a 2000 jeep grand cherokee in 2005 from a used car dealer in albuquerque. at that time no recalls or repairs of any safety related defects were revealed to me. i received a recall in novenber 2006 for cooling fan that i had already had done . daimler/chrysler reimbursed me for some of the repairs done. on 4-17-07 i was north bound on unser approaching ladera, traffic was stopped at the red light. i was traveling the speed limit which was posted at 35 mph. i pressed on the brake pedal to begin slowing down and nothing happened. i then slammed my foot down on the pedal it went to the floor and i rear ended a large pickup at the intersection. the air bags did not deploy, and i did not think the seat belt engaged untill i hit the steering wheel with my sternum. my injuries were minor, and i elt the injuries of the person i hit were also minor. the reason i believed thiswas so because i was knocked unconsicience. after some advice from an attourney i checked online for any safty related recalls on the vehicle. i was not surprised to find many. recall # 200002004 was a seat belt recall, recall # 20060313 was a brake system recall, and recall # 19991202 was a air bag recall. there were many more i am sure you were aware off. my concern was for anybody else thatwas driving one of these vehicles with their families in the car. if my wife or daughter had been in the vehicle with me i am sure their injuries would have been more severe. please look into this vehicle, it was not safe. *ak
On jan. 10, 2007, i was in a head-on collision and my air bags did not deploy. the whole front end of my jeep was smashed and i have to get a whole new front clip for it. also, the brakes went all the way to the floor and didn't seem to work properly. i am very upset about these issues and would like to know why the air bags would not deploy in this type of collision. *nm
I was in a car wreck involving myself and another vehicle, when a third vehicle chose to stop for no apparent reason in an intersection with a green light. we were traveling at maybe 40 miles per hour. i didn't have enough time to react and ran squarely into the back of the truck in front of me. my airbag failed to deploy. i was wearing my seat belt, but not properly, as the shoulder belt wasn't across my chest. however, when the airbag failed to deploy, my head slammed into the steering wheel, causing injury. i have contusions to my upper jaw, the lower half of my nose, my upper lip, and chin. my front teeth were knocked loose, and it is unknown yet if they will be able to recover, a root canal might have to be done. i broke a finger on my left hand,, when it was also slammed into the steering wheel. the police, emt's, and firemen on the scene were all discussing why my airbag failed to deploy. i feel like if it would have inflated i would not have any facial injuries at all. the accident just occurred yesterday, so i have yet to find out if there was any mechanical problems causing this failure. *jb
On september 14, 2006, my wife was involved in a serious accident in our jeep grand cherokee resulting in complete loss of the vehicle and non-life-threatening injuries to her. my two children, ages 3 and 4, were in the vehicle, properly restrained in cars eats and incurred no injuries. she was traveling at approximately 40 mph, accelerating from a stop, and hit the rear end of a truck parked in the middle lane of a three lane major road. the impact totaled the vehicle; however, the airbags failed to deploy. the failure of airbags in a head-on impact at 40 mph would seem to be a serious safety concern for the manufacture and perhaps should be investigated to determine if there is a defect in the model or if this was an isolated incident. *jb
Dt*: the contact stated while driving 25pmh the vehicle was forced off the road by another driver. the vehicle hit a telephone pole with the front end. the entire front of the vehicle received damage and all occupants were wearing seat belts, however neither frontal airbag deployed. the driver sustained injuries. there was property damage and police report was taken at the scene. the vehicle was inspected by the dealer, but have not determined why the airbags did not deploy. updated 04/15/09. *lj updated 04/16/09.*jb
My car has major problems and i can't afford to fix, then i find the problem that i have is due to the automaker's problem because the car is on recalls for the problems i am having. i received no notices on any recall, and when i got on the web-site to check for recalls there are as many as 10 major problems with my car and jeep. some could cause me to crash or even explode while driving. where are my recall notices? *tr
Dt*: the contact stated while attempting to apply brake pressure at 50 mph, the driver lost control of the vehicle which resulted in a crash and the airbags did not deploy. the driver side of the vehicle hit a guard rail and then a bridge rail head on. the driver was wearing a seat belt and sustained injuries. a police report was filed and pictures were taken at the scene. the manufacturer was alerted.
The consumer rear ended another vehicle in a panic stop while driving at 60 mph. upon impact, the frontal air bags failed to deploy. the dealership or the manufacturer were providing any information on why the air bags failed to deploy. the front passenger sustained bruises from the seat belt. *ak the vehicle displayed a hard start due to improper fuel pressure, it would take a long time to crank before catching, and the brakes pulsated due to warped rotors. *sc *jb
While driving 65 mph driver's foot was stuck on accelerator pedal due to a seizure. the passenger tried to maintain control of vehicle but was unable to do so. vehicle went air borne and landed on top, crashing into a brick wall. upon impact, both frontal airbags did not deploy. driver and passenger sustained injuries, and were transported by an ambulance to the hospital. the vehicle was totaled by the insurance company. *ak

My son was driving our 2000 jeep cherokee lareado when he was hit on the passenger side from another vehicle on march 25, 2002 at approx. 1:30 pm. the force of this collision push the car towards the left and the jeep went directly into a cement wall head on. fortunately both the driver and passenger had seat belts on, but neither airbags deployed when the vehicle hit the wall. at the time of impact, my son did hit the windsheild, which cause several facial cuts and could of been avoided had the airbags deployed. this malfunction on my vehicle concerns me not only because he could of been more seriously injured, but others in same situations could substain very serious injuries. nlm
On 2/15/02 my wife michelle with son joseph, (8yrs old) seated in the rear passenger side of a 2000 jeep, struck the passenger side of a 1999 4dr oldsmobile operated by frances clark who had failed to stop at a stop sign. michelle hit the side of the clark car "head-on" while travelling 52 mph on a dry night at 8pm. the air bags failed to deploy on our 2000 jeep. chrysler has inspected the vehicle and stated that there is "...no manufacture's responsibility". they refuse to do anything further!*ak
