Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC problems on 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Front end and steering wheel shake badly when braking at 40-50+ mph. brakes seem to "grab." dealer says rotors are bad; only has 13,300 miles on vehicle; dealer says not covered by warranty.*ak

There was pulsation when applying the brakes at high and low speeds. dealer replaced front pads and matched mounted rotors. *ak *tt

Rotors had to be reworked at 10,000 miles an and now must be done again at 15,000. dealer said will only cover when under 12,000, known problem and chrysler fails to acknowledge. will cost me $350.00 every 5-8,000 miles? could be a safety issue, steering wheel pulsates a lot when the rotors finally get real bad. chrysler should find and fix this problem. $30,000 vehicle and will need rotors every 5-8,000 miles? ? ?*ak

No summary listed for above vehicle. *ak

There is a defect in the brake pads/rotors. the front brake pads/rotors have been replaced two times, mileage 11,467 and 18,466. the second replacement the service department put on a new updated pad that was supposed to solve the problem. not quite. presently the car is in the service department getting all 4 rotors grinded down. i am currently fighting for warranty coverage. i have been through the arbitration process; i was told it hadn't been serviced enough times for this problem. daimlerchrysler is well aware of this problem, where's the recall for this major safety defect???*ak

Consumer states while driving he noticed a significant vibration when braking, upon calling dealership and checking warranty consumer found that brakes were warranted for 12000 miles, front brake pads and front rotors were replaced. *jb

There is rapid vibration in front cab part of vehicle when applying brakes at over 40 mph. contacted dealer. *ak

Rotors warped prematurely - cause unsafe shaking when apply brakes over 50 mph

Upon applying the brakes, the vehicle shakes excessively, including the steering wheel. according to the dealer mechanic's report, the problem is attributed to warped rotors. numerous other owners of the same vehicle i encountered have experienced the same problem at mileage below 10,000 miles. the problem is not attributed to normal wear and tear or driving habits as expressed by the dealer, but rather to defective manufactured installed rotors. i was informed that earlier versions ( 1998, 1999) of this vehicle were recalled for defective rotors. i am concerned of the safety issues involved due to the operator's inability to control the vehicle upon applying the brakes.*ak

While depressing brakes noticed a hard vibration in front of vehicle. technician stated manufacturer had wrong brakes pads on. *ak consumer states the brake pads were not disapating the heat and while the dealer representative stated there was 50 percent of the pads left, the heat had warped the front discs. *slc

When applying brakes, brake pedal pulsates and steering wheel vibrates. took to dealer, rotors were warped and had to be replaced twice.*ak *tt

When the consumer applied the brakes they pulsated, which caused the vehicle experienced extended stopping distance. dealer notified. *ak consumer wouldn't let her 15 yr. old daughter drive the vehicle in fear of the brakes failing, nor would she sell it. the vehicle had been to the mechanic many times and the problem continued to exist. *ph. the rotors and pads were replaced several times. the driver's side door was hard to lock, and the windshield wipers worked intermittently. *jb

If i was traveling at a certain speed and i applied my brakes, my steering wheel began to vibrate. i didn't think anything of it. my jeep was less than six months old and there couldn't be any problems with it....yet. i blemed the road conditions and didn't think much about it. the vibrations got worse but the roads where the same. i took it in the direct auto plaza, in el centro ca. and they said it was my rotors, they were warped. they said that it was "normal" wear and tear and that warranty would not cover the fixing of the rotora. they where going to charge me 350.00. i am frustrated because if this is normal wear and tear i don't know if i could afford to be putting 350.00 additional money in to "new" vehicle every 12-15 thousand mile. i feel that the rotors are defective and should be replaced under warranty.*ak

Rotors on the disc brakes warp prematurely causing the steering wheel to wobble when the brakes are applied. the dealer has repaired the vehicle twice. nlm

Consumer states steering wheel vibrates violently while braking at various speeds, front rotors were replaced twice and turned twice, dealership states they will not fix problem again, consumer was told by dealer that they see this problem with this type of vehicle everyday. *jb

The front discs wear out prematurely. i will be bringing my vehicle in for the second time in a to get the rotors replaced. the brakes first warped at about 15000 miles. then again at about 28000, possibly sooner. dealer replaced first set of rotors no charge. my father drives the identical vehicle and he is experiencing the identical condition, although he has not had to replace the rotors like i have. i have never had to replace rotors prior to 70000 miles or so on previous cars.*ak

Vibration while applying brakes at speeds at or above 35 mph. dealership has not examined vehicle to determine the cause. please provide any additional information/attachments.*ak

Rotors have become warped after very short time. front shimmies when braking. *ak

High pulsating in brakes, only warr. 12,000 miles, should have recall, very unsafe, had rotors turned and new pads, same problem starting again, i have not found a 2000 grand chreokee owner that has over 12,000 miles on it that has not had the same problem. *ak

Exact problem as described in service bulletin number 050100a. this is likely to recur!. no safety defect mentioned. *ak

Rotors are warped causing steering wheel shake at high speed braking. dealer wants to turn rotors at a cost of $180.. *ak

last year vehicle was taken in for a shimmy. when traveling over 50 mph the vehicle shakes very badly. took to a mechanic and they replaced rotors and brake pads. six thousand miles late, vehicle started to shake just a little. took back to dealer and they couldn't duplicate the problem. every 15 to 20 miles rotor need changing. consumer feels its very unsafe.*ak

At 10000 miles there was shaking in front end whenever consumer applied brakes. dealer turned warped rotors. this took care of problem for about a week. dealer wants consumer to pay for new front rotors, warranty only covers 12000 miles.*ak

Disc brakes continually need work. rotors warp and must be turned every 10,000 miles! now the automatic transmission won't shift out of 2nd gear until the car is warmed up. what next? the brake maintenance alone has cost me nearly $2,000. this is a $30,000 vehicle and should not require this much maintenance! *la

Brake rotors and pad have to be replaced every 25000 miles. brakes pedal goes all the way to the floor. dealership is aware of problem.*ak

The rotors and brake pads were replaced, due to excessive vibration in the steering.*jb *ts

Leased vehicle on 7/10/02. brakes began to pulse and pull to right on application at about 6000 miles. dealer machined front rotors and replaced pads under warranty at 7897 miles. same situation at 20000 miles. dealer turned front rotors at 24767 miles and called it "courtesy". said warranty on brakes, rotors only 12000mi. service manager advised this is common problem on 99-00 jeeps and he spends much time turning rotors on jeep vehicles. even had to buy special machine to turn rotors in place on vehicle. says some get so bad they can't be controlled on brake application. he says problem is bad rotors from supplier to daimler-chrysler. now at 33000 miles, this vehicle again has failed brake rotors and is rapidly becoming unsafe for my family's transportation. judging from the number of complaints on your website and on the number of websites devoted to this defect, i would think you have enough information to force a recall. or are injuries necessary to initiate action? i expect your agency to get and keep this type of junk off the road. it might be acceptable for daimler in germany but not here!*ak

Vehicle stalls. also, brakes and rotors are defective. *ak

Steering column had vibration that has been getting progressively worse. took vehicle to a dealership that examined vehicle. dealership determined that rotors were warped and had to be resurfaced. also, pads had to be replaced. *ak *jb

There is vibration coming from front of the vehicle during activation of brake system. vibration increases in severity when speed of vehicle increases. the dealership examined vehicle at 10,000 miles, and replaced the front brake rotors which failed to effectively remedy the problem. *akthe dealer refused to do anything to correct the warped rotors, the dealer acknowledged that faulty parts were used but claim that the manufacturer will not stand behind the parts *nlm

There is vibration in steering wheel when applying brake, dealer turned both front rotors twice, then replaced rotors twice. first turned at 19000 miles.*jb

2000 jeep grand cherokee since purchase, vibrates when brakes applied at highway speeds, is also causing uneven feathering/wear on front tires. i gave up on bigelow motors, belleville, nj ever helping me from the start, as they continued to deny that there was a problem. i was advised that chrysler knows the caliper warp in this model of cherokee and both the calipers and rotors will need to be replaced. there is no recall on this as yet but there certainly should be. i have been reading other complaints on this model of jeep and the manufacturer has had repeated brake problems which go unaddressed and cost owners a lot of money to fix or get to the problems. chrysler obviously is not responding deliberately. someone needs to investigate the brake problems with jeep grand cherokee and find out why they can not be fixed once and for all. the consumer is not being informed of the potential brake problems and thus can not make and informed decision when purchasing a new vehicle . in the end money out of consumers pockets and no protection from fraud by the manufacturer. i have had the brakes repaired almost a dozen times at a cost of almost $450 for each repair!!! this is an outrage, so please help. i need some guidance. *jb

When the consumer attempted to make a gradual stop and applied the brake pedal there was excessive pulsation. consumer contacted the dealer. the dealer will replace the rotors and pads in attempt to correct the problem. *ak both front and rear brake rotors had excessive run out and were resurfaced. *scc *jb *ph *jb

Steering wheel shakes when you apply brakes, and at the same time it make a weird pulsation. chrysler made me replace a part and the car keeps having the same problem over and over and i have to keep paying to have parts replaced. *la

At around 15,000 miles, we began to experience the steering wheel shimming excessively when the brakes were applied. i knew that this was caused by warped rotors so i called the dealership. they informed me that brakes/rotors are normal wear and tear items. since the dealership did nothing, i had to pay to replace the rotors as i didn't think turning them would solve the problem as the car had only 15,000 miles on it. totally unacceptable. a foreign car would not have this problem and they definitely would have fixed the problem while the car was still under warranty. if this gets forwarded to jeep, i want them to know that they have lost a loyal customer forever. i also like to tell everyone i meet about how i have experienced such poor service from american manufacturers. *jb

Brakes pulsated and was told by dealership it was due to driving in warm weather. had rotors turned at 12000 and 30000 miles with sampe problems. steering wheel also vibrates when braking at high speeds. now have 46000 miles and need rotors replaced. this should not be necessary replacement at these miles.*ak

Rotors are pulsating prematurely del. claims problem common not warranty some fail at 8000 miles. why?*ak

Please help me i bough a new car from these dealer and i am having problems with the front end. i bought these car in july of 2000 and the brake pads/rotors have been replace 3 times already the first time was on december 2000, the second time was on june 2001 and the third time now was november 2001. the third time i had to pay because my car was over the 12,000 thousand mile warranty. we spoke to the general manager of the dealer and we got no help, he refer us to the manager of the service departmment who was no help either, i just send a letter to the company in michigan because we really think is not fair, we being given the run around by everyone, we believe that our car has a brake/rotors factory defect but we don't really know how to go about getting help. besides the last time i took the car to get the rotors replaced the dealer reported to me that something was leaking from the front vehicle and that the inner diferential axles needed to be seals, is these normal on a new car we are mainly concern about the brake/pads rotors and because we have children we do not know if these could be a safety issue. thank you so much for your help. sincerely, the [xxx] family. *ak information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *js *tr

Rear disc brakes on the vehicle were defective from date of purchase which is why i had the accident described in the previous section. when i asked my dealership to check the brakes numerous times before and after the accident nothing was done by my dealership. they finally installed new rear disc breaks on 3/26/2001 when i complained one more time that there was vibration in the steering wheel and the whole car while braking. from the time frame given it looks like my dealership was trying to charge me for new rear brakes after the warranty on them expired but i held my ground and got it fixed for free. if the brakes were in normal condition, i would have avoided the accident that i was in and wouldn't have had $5000 of damage to my vehicle. i have all of the paperwork to prove my point.

Consumer states while driving at highway speed, the vehicle became extremely dangerous when braking, and the vehicle began shaking violently, the rotors have been replaced 4 times due to warpage and the brake pads have been replaced once.*jb

At 9,000 miles defective rotors caused steering wheel to vibrate severely when brakes were applied, dealer was notified, and informed consumer that vehicle was not covered under a recall.*ak consumer stated that manufacturer should have shared the expense of replacing front and back pads/rotors.*slc

When putting on brakes, front end would shimmy and vibrate. took to dealer and they changed rotors/ resurfaced rear rotors, and replaced shoes. dealer keeps replacing defect with same fix, and problem keeps reoccurring.*ak. the brakes fail every 10,000 miles. first two brake jobs were replaced under warranty. consumer refused to pay for the third brake job. dealer resurfaced rotors for free. *jg

This is the 2nd time for the brakes shuttering. also, always pulls to right *ak

When applying brakes front end vibrates. had not contacted dealer. please add vin. *ak

Letter sent to dealer and manufacturer after second repair completed indicating my concern about having two front brake warp problems in less than 18000 miles. i indicated i was going to submit a letter of concern to nhtsa. currently have a good customer relationship with the dealer.*ak

Rotors are warping at 15,000 mile intervals. dealer says they are having numerous complaints regarding warped brake rotors but they say not covered under warranty. they claim the rotors are not made durable enough (thick enough) for the vehicle. when the rotors warp the vehicle vibrates when the brakes are applied. in my opinion it would appear the mfg is using defective rotors since the brake pads are outlasting the rotors. rotors should not need to be replaced or turned at 15,000 mile intervals.ts. *ak

Had replaced brake rotors twice and is happening a third time. chrysler needs to be informed by someone with authority and action needs to be taken to fix the problem. i have asked for a replacement vehicle and was told "no" by a secretary of chrysler. there is no way of talking to anyone who has any standing or who makes these decisions. please help. spent a lot of money on vehicle thinking that it is reliable. please respond with some advice. *ak

Consumer started experiencing problems with the brakes nine months after purchase. *ph the consumer had rotors replaced several times. there was an excessive crank when the consumer attempted to start the vehicle, the dealer replaced the fuel pump quad ring. the tail light bulb and water pump was replaced. *jb

There are alot of problems with this jeep all witch i have proof of repairs, cam shaft, tires, brakes, alignment and humming at 65 mph.*jb

The brake rotors had to be resurfaced at approximately 9,000 miles, while under a 12/12 warranty. these rotors had to be resurfaced again at 22283 miles, at a cost of $259.00 because the brakes were surging upon application at low speeds.
