Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC problems on 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Severe front end shake and vibration when applying brakes.this is second time. first time at 9k miles, turned rotors. *ak

Consumer is having problems with brakes since date of purchase. consumer has taken vehicle in to get brakes fixed. *ak

While applying the brakes the steering wheel shakes due to faulty front rotors, the rotors have been replaced 4-5 times. nlm

Severe vibration during high speed braking due to warped rotors. front rotors and pads replaced.*ak

Repeated attempts to remedy this system have failed. it's a lemon! no safety defect listed. *ak

Front end shutters out of control during normal braking at 40+ mph

Dt: the brake rotors and pads keep wearing out, and the vehicle makes a chatter noise and vibrates when the brakes are applied. the consumer took the vehicle to the dealership and the brakes were replaced six times. the problem started on august 21, 2000. the replace brakes wore out at six to seven thousand miles. the dealership replaced the front rotors, the pads, the front calipers, installed a technical service bulletin ( tsb) kit, resurfaced the front rotors, rear brakes pads, and rear rotors; each of these have been done multiply times. there have been no accidents as of yet. *ak

When driving over 55 mph vehicle vibrated when the brake pedal was pressed. dealer tried on five different occasions to fix the problem. the calipers/rotors, and pads were replaced, some more than once. *ak

Rotars and brake pads have been a consistent problem, every few months. rotars and brake pads have been replaced, refaced, and resurface on several occasions and the problem continues. the problem causes an extreme vibration at higher speeds in the steering column and is a concern because this is our family vehicle. i have three children that i transport everyday to school, sports and other activities. i have spent a lot of time arguing with representatives from chrysler as well as the dealership in order to resolve this ongoing problem and have spent a lot of time with no vehicle due to the vehicle being in the shop. i am concerned about the safety of myself, my family and those drivers around me that the brake system may fail in the future. chrysler encourages my family by stating that this will not occur, however i am unconvinced that a problem with the brakes is not a reason to be alarmed.*ak

Rotors need replaced again. they say its my driving habits. rotors should not have to be replaced at 12,000 mile incriments at owners expense. there has to be a problem with the way the vehicle was built. i have owned other cars and never replaced my rotors. the rotors were replaced in january 2000 at 12,500 mile. the dealership in michigan replaced at no cost to me. now that i am in oklahoma, it is doing the same thing and eddie cordes dealership said i am the cause for the need of replacement. i do not think rotors should need replacement in only nine months from previouse replacement. chrysler corporation told me to have them look at it again but most likley i will have to pay for them because brake and rotor warranties are only good for 12,000 mile or 1 year from purchase. please investigate!

Vehicle vibrates when applying brakes between 40-50 mph. dealer notified. please feel free to provide any further details on this matter. *ak

Jeep/chrysler is not responsive to the problems with these vehicles. the brakes are dangerous and cause so much vibration in the brake pedal and steering wheel that driver control is adversely affected.

At speeds of 50 to 65 mph, hard shimmy during normal braking. dealer discovered warped rotors, and replaced under 12mo/12,000mi warranty. at 9,000 miles and 8 months later same problem developed. warped rotors again. dealer advised i'm out of warranty and would pay for repairs. very dangerous problem making the vehicle harder to control as problem worsens. service dept. acknowledges there's a problem, but seems to be hoping it'll go away! *ak

Extreme vibration when braking at 45+ mph. rotors resurfaced 2 times. recall for similar problem for '97-98 jeeps. dealership & damilerchrysler refuse to admit there is a problem despite tsb. found many other similar complaints on nhtsa complaint site as well as: http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/engaged/edmund.cgi?c=maintenance&t=507

The abs system failed under a panic stop resulting in a crash. *ak

I contacted nhtsa last week. update: i received a technical service bullitin #05-01-00 rev a dated 14 april 00. under discussion the bullitin states, " a new brake pad repair kit has been released which contains an adhesive backing. this will provide for a more positive release of the brake pad when the brake pedal is released. this, in turn will move the pad away from the rotor, resulting in less friction and wear, which resulted from the pad resting on the rotor when brakes were not applied." the bullitin goes into the repair and then goes into the policy. the policy is "reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty" remember, i had the brakes and rotors changed in jan 2000. nine months later i need to repair them again but i have to pay for the repairs. reading this bulletin makes it obvious that chryselor knows that they are at fault but are placing the cost to the customer. totally unfair! this could be a safety issue. if you read the bulletin it states that the jeep will vibrate at the steering wheel and seat. this could cause a person to panic at a high rate of speed. please put me on the list of comlainers about this problem and let me know what chryslers position is with this problem. chrysler does not want to give me any explanation except "sorry if you feel this way". thank you! sfc dudzik. *ak

Front brake rotors warped and required replacement after 20k miles. this defect causes a dangerous steering shimmy when braking and impares vehicle control.

When driving and upon depressing brake pedal to make a gradual stop, consumer notice vibration in steering wheel, causing poor vehicle control. consumer has contacted dealer, dealer noticed brake pads and rotors needed replacing. *ak

The seal-axle drive shaft, gear kit center differential, gear kit ring and pinion, bearing-drive pinion, shim-drive pinion bearing, seal-drive pinion, and shim-differential bearing were all replaced.*jb

While driving would step on the brakes and steering wheel vibrated over 20 mph. dealer told consumer that rotors had to be replaced. *ak

Front end shimmy, steering wheel pulsates when braking at45+ mph. told rotors heat up and warp causing front end shake. at 23080miles front pads and rotors replaced by dealer. at 33000 miles front pads replaced rotors turned. at 34000 shimmy continues, dealer deems no repair necessary. bought new tires, had alignment before research showed many others with same problem. i drive emergency vehicles at a high rate of speed for a living, and my personal vehicle makes me nervous to operate. this is definitly a safety and manufacturer problem.*ak

When shifting vehicle in reverse it makes a loud noise and vehicle jerks. dealership replaced tranfer case twice, and rebuiltd the driveshaft.*ak the vehicle would not start due to fuel pump failure. driver side wiper blade was worn out. rear differntial was worn, also the rotors were replaced, the fule injection was serviced cleaned the throttle body, power steering fluid was serviced, tires were rotated, pinion bearings, front axles seals replaced. *yh

Purchased 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited in dec of 99. since that time have had brakes worked on 3 different times, twice by jeep and now midas because of steering wheel shimmy when brakes are applied. since midas replaced w/upgraded ceramic pads, the problem came back again.*ak

With braking from 65 to 50 mph, there is a severe steering wheel vibration. it stops and doesn't occur at speeds less than 50 mph. it also does not occur when braking at higher speeds. the onset was insideous, with no known initiating vehicle damage. it has progressively worsened. when contacted, the dealership service department was not concerned, and believed it to be not an urgent or emergent problem. i know of 2 other 1999 grand cherokee owners now with the same complaint. is this a potential safety hazard? *ak

Brake rotors warped, and subsequently replaced with same quality, thus are warped again, causing severe shaking to front end upon braking. mfg. zone mgr refuses to correct situation, stating it is wear and tear, (nhtsa campaign-00v136000). starter drags intermittently upon starting with a complete failure at 500 miles. mfg will not replace starter until it completely fails again. heat is resricted to drivers feet, and high pitched sound is heard as a result of the restriction. mfg. tech service bulletin on file for problem, but dealer calls it normal. remote control memory side view mirrors will not reset to proper positions, thus causing a safety issue, as mirrors are never in the same place twice. dealer observed problem and disregarded same. pittsburgh zone manager contacted by dealer. mgr refuses to do anything, even though safety issues are involved, as with brakes, mirrors, and starting problem. *ak

Rotors fade fast. very loud noise coming from brakes at 22,000 miles, the sound of metal against metal. brakes replaced, noise stopped for 2 or 3 weeks and now continues. i see that they had a recall for a problem like this for the cherokee and grand cherokee, but i missed the recall by one year and i believe that my vehicle should be included in the recall.

Brake rotors severely warped without any hard use or towing. common and recurring problem for this vehicle. affects safety in stopping, especially with abs. new rotors are good for only a few thousand miles. there is a serious part/design problem with these brakes. ironic since jeep touted the brakes as the best in class in advertising. chysler refuses to acknowledge or act on this widely reported problem. i am unable to identify a brand of rotors that will stand up to the vehicle demands without warping. there should definitely be a recall on these brakes after a fix has been devised.*ak

Steering hard to control when braking dueto front wheel shimmy.*ak

Brake rotors were experiencing excessive wear. rotors were replaced at 12,000 miles and at 28,000 miles. *ak consumer states chrysler agreed to pay 1/2 of the repairs. *slc

Rotors replaced at 10700 for warping ,then turned 2 more times after, brought back fourth time. the dealer said front rotors and pads now must be replaced at owners expense. this will be the third set of rotors in the jeep at 32800 miles. the dealer says normal. seeking hire authority at present. also steering wheel vibrates bad, saftey problem, did not replace, do want to come back in another 8000 miles or less.*ak

Rotors are a continuing problem. 3 failures in a year. look at the numbers recall

Brakes/rotors failed twice :rotors warped & replaced 16k mi. happened second time at 29000 mi . dealer acknowledged defect but said jeep will not replace. am driving on faulty brakes in fear of my life. at this rate will be replacing rotars every year.*ak

Consumer took vehicle to a repair shop & had brake rotors replaced. they were making a grinding noise & slipping. conusmer will contact the manufacturer.*ak

While driving stepped on brakes and they made noise, like metal to metal grinding. front brake rotors were corroded. manufacturer sent a recall notice, but dealer did not take care of it. *ak

Rotors on this vehicle warp at approximately every 10,000 miles. when applying brakes on highway, the vehicle violently shakes and you begin to loose control of the vehicle.*ak

Rotors and pads supposedly replaced by dealer at 11k miles rotors warped again at 30k they said chrysler wont pay took jeep to my own mechanic who replaced front rotors and said it didnt look like they had replaced the rotors but recut them i rechecked my invoice from dealer says replaced per service bulletin, called chrysler they say they reported they were just resurfaced. a recall needs to be done on this this is crazy that so many jeeps are having the exact same problem i didnt want any more inferior mopar junk put on my car.*ak

Repeated rotor failure with need to replace rotors often. *ak

Rotors had to be turned at 7,000 miles and at 9,000 miles. rotors had to be recoiled and lubed, causing steering wheel to vibrate heavily. also, a loud squealing noise at low or at high speeds. *ak

No summary listed for above vehicle. *ak

Brake rotors became warped to the point the vehicle bounced when braking. dealer declined to replace rotors, how ever agreed to machine them per tsb. dealer service confirmed this was a proplem on some 1999jeeps. my concern is, although they did the work under warranty,i will have to replace the rotors sometime in the future, because they did not.*ak

No summary listed for above vehicle. *ak

Whole vehicle vibrated as brakes were applied. all four rotors were refinished. after contacting chrysler the costs were reimbusred. six weeks later i'm noticing a vibration again. i believe i should have a whole new brake system put in.*ak

Driver lost steering control due to warped/cracked right rear brake rotor. vehicle rolled over landing on roof. driver partially ejected. witness behind grand cherokee observed driver fighting with steering wheel prior to rollover.*ak
