Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC problems on 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Have had the front brake rotors replaced 4 times. on the fourth time chrysler said this is the last time they would replace the rotors and are washing their hands of it.*ak

Rotors are warping and have been replaced/resurfaced twice. when applying brakes vehicle shimmies. please provide any further information.*ak

Brake system rotors warp after approx. 5000 to 8000 miles. history is as follows. each time vehicle was taken in due to vibration while braking. 10-19-1999 at 4812 mi. - said not problem was found. 1-18-2000 at 7405 mi. - resurfaced both frnt rotors. 5-2-2000 at 10858 mi. - replaced both frnt. rotors. 5-29-2001 at 22008 - "found frt rotors to be out of round" replaced frt rotors. (this time had been occuring for a while but it took a while for me to get the vehicle in for service.) recently on 12-17-2001 the problem continues, 28000 mi. however they will not cover any repairs as they have in the past. when problem origionlly started i was told by the service manager that due to changes in brake pad makeup that this was going to be normal and to expect it. i was also told to change my driving habits. (i do not ride the brakes). any help would be greatly appreciated as chrysler and the dealership are washing their hands to this.*ak

Brake rotors are warped, causing severe shimmy on braking. i thought it was peculiar that the service advisor said they would charge me to inspect if he reported this problem. i will not pay for something that should be a warranty issue. the brake rotor problem with the grand cherokee is widely publicized. i think the reason the dealer charges to inspect this is to discourage as many people as possible from reporting this widespread problem.*ak

Rotors warped at under 10,000 miles. dealership did not replace but resurfaced and in another 8,000 miles same problem occurred. dealership would not accept full responsibility for inherent defect.*ak

Rotors are shot and it seems i'm not the only one, 4 wheel drive will not disengage even after i shift it out of 4 wheel drive (large popping noise when it does disengage). rear wiper works sometimes and othertimes it won't. now i'm being told the transfer case is leaking and needs to be replaced (seal and shaft). at 53,000 miles these items seem ridculous. i've checked around on the internet and it seems like others have the same problems.

Brakes. i own a 1999 jeep grand cherokee that required a complete front brake job. this included "upgraded" calipers replacement of all front brake components and machining on all rear components. at less than 70,000 miles this seems a little extreme. i have checked with jeep directly and they feel this is not a problem. i see on the complaint list there are quite a few cars that have this issue. what is being done and what can i do? *la

Vehicle has several jerks when decelerating and accelerating. brake rotors(4) had to be replaced. brake pads also had to be replaced. u-joint replaced. ring gear and pinion problems. transmission jerking. sunroof vibrations when sunroof is open. overall a nightmare of a vehicle purchase. *ak

Front end wobbles when brakes are applied at high speeds. rotors were resurfaced, and new front disc brakes were put on. but, problem still exists. dealer is aware. *ak.*mj

Bolts holding brake caliper broke, causing caliper to grind grove in wheel, resulting in wheel failure. *ak

Front brake rotors warp after about 8 - 9,000 miles. i am on my 5th set of rotors and they are warped now. there is no fix in sight. mega brake dust on front wheels. brakes continually rubbing against rotors.*

While driving about 55 mph could step on brake pedal and steering wheel will start vibrating in an uncontrolable way. consumer had taken vehicle to dealer more than four times for same brake problem. dealer had repaired and rotated rotors, but this had not solved the situation. please provide more information. *ak

Warped brake rotors, rotors replaced at 18,984 miles at no charge, dealer strongly reccommended replacing brake pads @ cost to me of $572.27 . problem reoccurred at 27,278 miles. dealer replaced front rotors at no charge. at 35583 mailes, dealer again replaced front rotors. i was assured that chrysler was aware of the problem. now at 65,000 miles the rotors are warped again. dealer says chrysler will not pay for repair. how many more of these complaints are required before nhtsa takes some action to resolve this issue??*ak

Consumer received recall# 00v034000 notice for brake rotors. consumer contacted dealer for recall repairs, but was told that this vehicle was not included in recall due to vin although consumers vehicle experienced same problem as stated in recall.*ak consumer stated he still has the original rotors.*jb

Front and rear brake rotors had to be replaced twice with 43000 miles on vehicle. vehicle was not stopping within the distance it should stop. contacted dealer. *ak

Dt: the contact stated the brakes pulsated when applied, and the steering vibrated. he had the same problem two years ago and the brakes were replaced. the problem recurred, and no repairs have been done. the contact felt vibration caused damage to the steering column. *ak

Steering wheel vibrates violently when braking from 55 miles per hour through 45 miles per hour. initial incidemt occurred at 5009 miles (apr 99) - dealer turned the rotors under warranty. problem re-occurred at 10,471 miles (nov 99) - rotors replaced under warranty. problem next occurred at 17,194 miles (jan 01) - outside warranty - chrysler refunded half of the cost of repair. problem last occurred at 23,614 miles (9/01) - new dealer replaced rotors under warranty.*ak

Replaced front rotors and procut front rotors at 10,789 mile. now same problem with brakes. dealer shown is seller. service dealer is:moore automotive group, 8600 west bell rd, peoria, arizona 85382, 623-972-7199. *ak

Tire failure reported at an earlier date. four sets of rotors have been installed on this vehicle - also reported at an earlier date.*ak

1999 defective chrysler grand jeep cherokee.***no answer required***. *mr the consumer experienced repeated problems with the rotors, pads and calipers. the consumer has experienced hard vibration not only in the front end of the vehicle, but the steering wheel, floor, seat and instrument panel. the vibration was so severe the consumer would lose control of the steering wheel. the rotors would heat up, the caliper froze. the intermediate shaft was replaced, the rear latch was lubricated due to squeaking. the battery was replaced because the consumer had a hard time starting the vehicle. *jb

The front brakes on this auto have been horriable and have cause considerable stress. chyrsler refuses to do anything about the continued brake problems, despite numerous complaints from all over the country, by thousands of consumers. i have confirmed this via the internet and any chat room that discusses jeep problems. thanks for the help! trisha laforge. *ak

Steering wheel and brake pedal shake violently when applied at high speed. same problem occurred at 13200 miles and was repaired by dealer.*ak

Brake rotors are warped. this effects steering every 5,000-8,000 miles when used. can maintain control when brakes applied. would need to change rotors every 5,000 miles. steering would vibrate when this happens. speed not a factor. took vehicle to dealer nearly a dozen times or more, but nothing resolved.*ak

My 1999 jeep grand cherokee laredo had a new differential install edat 15,000 miles; two new front rotors at 36,000 and should have been done way before this; back brake drum cracked at 36,000 miles; front rotors redone again at 42000 miles; and now the motor at 52,000 miles. we had not indication (noise, etc) of the motor going, i was traveling aroung 5-10 miles per hour turning into our road and it felt like something heavy dropped out of the vehicle, it sounded like metal going through a fan. a piece of the block fell out onto the road and the people at the local dealer said they had never seen any thing like it before. it was like a bomb went off inside the motor. my question -- should chyrsler be responsible for this motor, it will be in the range of $6,000. thank you.*ak

Not only does the transmission slip out of gear going down the highway, but i have already went thru one set of new brake pads on the front and now the second set is squealling like crazy so there has to be a problem with the brakes to, could you please make diamond chrysler do recalls to fix these problems before any one else is killed or seriously hurt, i have been to your web site and seen and read hundreds and hundreds of complaints about these sqame problems. thank you. *ak

Vehicle has been in dealer's repair shop 5 times for brake failure. rotors were replaced at 36,000 miles/ 48,000 miles, and new rotors were put on. at 55,000 miles /68,000 miles/ 72,00 miles rotors were turned again. however, rotors needed to be replaced again. vehicle started shaking when brakes were applied. vehicle has no problem stopping. manufacturer did not have a solution. *ak

I purchased my 1999 jeep grand cherokee laredo, in january of 1999. since i have had the vehicle i have had both front brake rotors serviced four(4) times. the first time was august 30, 2000, at 30,070 miles. the second time was december 12, 2000, at 36,242 miles. the third time was march 16, 2001, at 41,560 miles. the forth time was august 1, 2001, at 44, 288 miles. the first time they were serviced, the service department, at mccafferty had to cut the front rotors. the 2nd thru the 4th times the front rotors had to be resurfaced. i have had to pay for service, all 4 times, the dealer saying it was from normal "wear and tear". on one occasion i talked to mr. bob gundy, whom i believe is the service manager at mccafferty jeep. i told him that i had been told that i had been asked, by another service advisor, if i had a heavy foot on the brakes, being told the damage might be from this. i told the advisor, at the time, i did not. mr. gundy stated that it was nothing wrong that i did, but a defect caused by the wheels getting bigger, the brake pads getting bigger, but the front brake rotors staying the same size. this, he told me, caused the front brake rotors to warp, and becoming damaged. he stated, to me, it was because of this. i know, from talking to several other grand cherokee owners, that the same problem has occured with their vehicles. the steering wheel shimmying, when the brakes are applied at high speeds. although not yet a general recall, i believe that the nhytsa should look into this matter, with a possible recall justified, down the road. i thankyou for your attention to this matter.*ak

When stepping on brakes there's a vibration in vehicles pedal and the wheels. please provide any further information.*ak

Total of 4 total brake(rotor/pad) repairs needed alomg with: rear diff, oil seals, calipers, steering stabilizers, brake lines. all mileage is highway with little brakage.*ak

The brakes pulsate dramatically whe applying brakes steadily above 50mph. this started at 23,000 miles, reported at 30,000 miles-no work done, reported again at 32,000 miles, refaced both front rotors-warped. reported same pulsating at over 50 mph 37,748 miles-refaced both front rotors. in checking your web site there are dozens of complaints along these same lines, abnormal vibrations/ pulsating from brakes when braking over 50mph. this condition is either faulty materials and/or bad engineering. if not corrected by mfg. serious accidents will result which could have been avoided. chrysler is aware of these complaints and knows that this repeated problem is not within the normal, acceptable range of performance, but they try to deny they have a serious problem which needs correcting.*ak

Per dealer diagnosis, there are excess front rotors run out and thickness variance, which contribute to excess vibration when breaking and might cause failure to stop at low speed. dealer also told me there are many similar conplaints about similar problems and the quality of rotor is very bad. *ak

Brakes pulsate and jerk when applying brakes. rotors and the pads have been replaced repeatedly for over last three years. contacted dealer, and dealer is not wlling to do anything. *ak

The brakes in my 99 jeep warp every 10,000 miles causing the vehicle to violently vibrate when breaking at highway speeds. i was told "yeah it was a design flaw" by the dealership when i first brought it in and that they have this problem with most of the jeeps they sell. every 10,000 miles!!!! i do not commute or drive grades. 10,000 miles per rotor resurfacing.*ak

One resurface and two replaced rotors under warranty; seems to need third set of rotors in less than 34,000; warped rotors effects control of car while braking. need nhtsa to open file and investigate. this is a serious safety problem and a recall is mandated.*ak

Around 50 when brakes applied, car vibrates. dealer fixed problem around 22000 miles but problem returned.*ak

Brake rotors warped at about 30,000 miles. chrysler jeep has a tsb (#050100 and #050100a).*ak

I purchased the vehicle in oct 2000 with 28000 miles. we have approximatly 29500 miles on it now. when driving a freeway speeds the steering wheel will vibrate quite severly. traveling down hill will make this problem more pronounced, eg. more vibration. i called the dealer and was informed that this is not covered by warrenty. i replaced the front discs myself and found that the front discs had allready been cut to the wear limit stated on the discs. less material left on discs warpage a lot sooner. it appears that many other owners of this vehicle have had to repalace disc for the same problem. in conclusion vibrating steering wheels take your attention off the road and pose a dangerous situation when it happens. i am sure you will find a mountain of brake dsics attesting to this problem. hopefully no accident damaged people.*ak

The rotors failed in march of 2000 and were replaced by a dealer and have now been replaced a second time. i did note that there have been several technical service bulletins published on this same subject. jeep needs to be more responsible about the correction of this obvious defect. thank you. *ak

Abs braking system rotors for the 1999 jeep grand, cherokee causes vehicle to shake, and driver to lose control of the vehicle when speed was above 25mph. consumer has had rotors replaced on vehicle less than 1,000 miles ago. dealer has yet to be contacted. please provide further details.*ak

Sever front end shimmy and puslation of brakes when braking from hwy speed. dealer reported warped rotors due to high heat placed on brakes. when i asked what would cause the high heat i was told i must drive with my foot on the brake which i don't do. dealer machined rotors at owners expense.*ak

Vehicle experienced major pulsation when braking, the brake and disc rotors were warped, dealer replaced those and a a pad kit, shoe kit parking brake, shoe kit rear disc brake, seal axle drive shaft, and brake shoe and lining assembly, about 6000 mile later, problem returned, brake pads and rotors were replaced along with the shoe kit front disc brake. gear kit center differential, gear kit ring and pinion, bearing -drive pinion, shimdrive pinion, seal drive pinion, and shim differential pinion were replaced. about 12000 miles later, vehicle is experiencing brake pulsation again, dealership is stating the vehicle has rotor runnout front and rear, this will be the fourth set of brakes on this vehicle, consumer states this is a safety hazard that continues to occur. *slc

The second failure of the rotors and pads occurred at 16,065 mi. and the dealer agained replaced the rotors and pads. this vehicle in less that 2 years had three sets of rotors and pad, i.e the original, the first replacement and the third set in less than 1 year 10 months. the dealer indicated to me that next regardless of when it happens will cost me an est. $450.00 . the first failure was 09/20/00 and the last failure was 06/14/01. something is wrong with the brake system in this jeep - i been advised that some 1999 jeeps were recalled for the same problem but not mine--help please thanking you in advanceoriginal rotor and pads failed at 9,564 mi and the dealer replaced the parts at no cost. *ak

Excessive ,front, brake rotor wear,,brake pads still have over 10%pad left . *ak

Brake pedal pulsates and front end shakes and shimmies like the tires are going to fall off when stopping at normal traffic speeds. *ak

Front oem rotors warped after 6 months of ownership and 7,000 miles of driving. dealer admitted ongoing problems with rotors warping on grand cherokees. refused to replace under warranty and would only perform repairs with oem parts. rotors subsequently replaced with aftermarket performance parts. manufacturer blames failures on weight of vehicle and driving conditions. i've owned two similar weight ford explorers driven under the same conditions for a combined 200,000 miles with no rotor problems.*ak

Chrysler "extended the warranty" to repair front brakes, but would admit no liability on the rear brakes. *ak

Consumer states that at 45 mph and higher when accelerating and decelerating there is shimming and vibration in the steering wheel the dealer has turned the rotors twice and changed the pads once and the problem has reoccurred. nlm *yh

Purchased my 3rd jeep in may of 1999. in may of 2001 the steering wheel starting shaking violently when applying the brakes. took it to the dealer and was told the rotors were warped. dealer machined them and would not warranty the work done. sent a note to jeep and for customer accomodations i was reimbursed 50%. mileage at the time was 28,447. in august of 2001 at 32,771 miles the same problem occurred. after taking it to the dealer i was told they needed to put new rotors on but they would not warranty them. after much discussion the dealership agreed to replace under warranty. in may of 2002 at 45,255 the same problem occurred. once again, i was told no warranty. after another "heated" discussion they agreed to warranty after calling the regional manager for chrysler. i am very upset about this and cannot believe that nothing is being done. it is impossible to get in contact with anyone of authority at chrysler to discuss. i have filed a formal complaint and was told it would probably go nowhere since they did replace the rotors under warranty. this issue needs to be addressed quickly before someone is seriously injured due to a lack of concern for safety by jeep/chrysler. *ak

Steering problem would occur when brakes were applied. vehicle taken to dealer, and informed consumer of front brake rotor failure.*ak. dealer would not correct problem under warranty, consumer took vehicle to to a repair facility where the rotors and pads were replaced because of extensive damage. consumer is seeking reimbursement. *jg

Brakes were not braking evenly and began to studder when applied. in remedy, dealer resurfaced rear rotors. front rotors had to be replaced at owner's expense.*ak *jb
