We have classified the 47 complaints from 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
Takata recall to be truthfully honest nothing about this jeep is safe i didn't know that i could put in a recall for this jeep because i thought it was too old and too late anyway sensors are horrible no turning signals , my belt assembly breaks a part while driving radiator gets really hot to the point of smoking even when my coolant is full i have sun roof problems because water leaks through it and floods the driver and passenger side trunk will not open my suspension is in great need of help it doesn't even bounce , alot of safety problems but like i said didn't know i could for file for a recall so i'm hoping that this can get recalled.
Tl* the contact owns a 1999 jeep grand cherokee. while driving various speeds, the contact noticed a burning odor in the vehicle without warning. in addition, the interior lighting, hazard lights, and turn signals would turn on and off independently. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made of the failures. the failure mileage was approximately 180,000.
My complaint involving my vehicle and its now defected parts or unsafe status to operate is due to mechanical workmanship. i purchased my vehicle 3 years ago. never had major problems with it and maintained it well and regular tune-ups. i invested in buying all parts needed as time well ware and tare. im not too familiar with auto parts or work but as im putting more money into "new parts" my car seems to slowly continue to fail. all i know is i relied on certain mechanics to improve the condition of my car. i had a operable vehicle until i drove into this auto shop and left having to tow it out. i simply asked to change front brake pads, roters, and ignition switch (electrical part). im told to purchase other parts that include screws, steering column, and key locksmith/ fees. nothing got resolved and electrical everything stops working. jeeps front driver tire stays on a flat and to make matters worse a chrysler dealership is the only place that can fix this. the mechanic spoke to the dealership and finally seemed to have it figured out. $50 was the price i was told i would be left with. after running test and diagnostics, prices changed and more work was needed. its been a little over 2 months since ive been without. now im told i need to pay in full $1500 before they will work on my vehicle. i havent been offered a rental muchless been satisfied with the work done. i feel like my car has been stripped of paid parts. ive looked online for advice and help as what i should do but no action has been done. i would appreciate and greatly be thankful for someone to look into the safety and work performed to my jeep. as for the recalls the service tech named off several that he stated were taken care of. to my knowledge ive never been aware of any.
Tl* the contact owns a 1999 jeep grand cherokee. while the vehicle was parked, the air bag warning light illuminated and started blinking. after a few days, the warning light remained illuminated all the time. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 227,499.
Electric system is bad and jeeps are known for the bad belts
I would have put igniotion/key as the affected parts, but that's not an option. so i'm driving down the road, and all of sudden it just stops running. literally on southfield road. think it was just a fluke i continued to try and drive it. because the first time it started right back up. but now, it turns off at a light, during a turn, going 25mph, 45mph... basically whenever it feels like. i have a son that is a permit only driver, and can't allow him for safety reasons to be driving this vehicle. i went to the mechanic and this is what i was told, there is a part in the ignition system that sends a signal to the chip in the key. when that stops sending the signal the vehicle turns off. great anti-theft idea! it's so dangerous. mechanic says the part is $100+ and then the original keys 'may not' reprogram, which means an extra $60 per key, plus programming. there is a reason the dealer keeps it in stock, gotta know it fails. this part should be recalled before someone gets hurt because the vehicle decided to stop running on the expressway.
I'm continuing having to replace the lock actuator on the driver's door & also each door locks on the remaining doors. this has been costly & time consuming and needles to say without a vehicle. some of my friends have the same concerns regarding the locks. hopefully i can get ya'll to assist with getting a recall for these locks. any assistance is appreciative. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 1999 jeep grand cherokee. the vehicle stalled while driving at an unknown speed. the dealer replaced the pcm board, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000.
Passenger side front door would not unlock. all doors automatically lock when vehicle speed increases above approximately 15 mph. vehicle was parked and passenger was not able to open door using door handle. after several minutes we were able to get the door to unlock and passenger was able to egress the vehicle. this could pose a serious threat to occupants that could lead to serious injury or death by delaying or preventing their exiting from the vehicle in an emergency or after an accident. this locking system failure also disables the external door operating mechanism making it impossible for someone outside the vehicle to open the affected door thereby making it more difficult for them to assist those inside the vehicle. this make, model and year vehicle has a recall that addresses loss of fuel tank integrity following a rear end collision. if the loss of fuel tank integrity resulted in a fire the failure of the door lock system to prevent occupants exiting the vehicle could result in serious injury or death. *tr
One day i was on my way to work and the heater on the passenger side was blowing cold air. the drivers side was warm air blowing. i took it to the shop to be fixed and it cost me $796.00. once i started telling people what had happened it seemed like any one that had a jeep had been through this expensive problem just to have heat in your vehicle in the middle of winter and no extra money to fix it right away. i think this should be a recall on jeeps for the actuator and blend doors. i think i should be refunded for the cost of this bad/poor design on jeep's. also the electric door locks. i was leaving work one day and went to unlock my door and it would not unlock. i had to call a lock smith to get it unlocked, only to find out the electric door switch went bad in it. that cost another$185.00. i also hear this problem happens to alot of jeep's. now my heated mirror on the drivers side is all messed up and you can not see out of it clearly and it will not defrost. so now it looks like about another $100 or so to get that fixed. when i first bought this jeep about 1 1/2 years ago the fan that cools the motor went bad and was causing the motor to overheat. that cost another $200 to have that fixed. i think some of these items need recalled and give these people with jeeps some of there money back because of all of the problems that we have had with them and all these things seem to start around 100,000 miles. something needs done. *tr
1999 jeep grand cherokee. consumer writes in regards to transfer case actuator recall notice. *smd the consumer stated the recall noticed stated, the parts were not available.
I am coming home driving my jeep grand cherokee 1999 from my mechanic in queens village after he change the map sensor and relay to fix the stalling problem on the jeep. driving on grand central parkway at the speed of 55mph, i was lucky to have driven my car and be able to come to inner roads when my car died(stalls) again in the middle of the traffic. after 30min, the car starts again after a numerous tries then stops after 500ft and it didn't start until after 15min of standing by in the middle of traffic again. it's just so frustrating when this happens because my car is in very good shape and it's stalling my engine, unbearable problem because i am afraid to drive my car on a highway or expressway. *tr
I was driving on the highway at 70 mph and the car shut off by itself without any warning, then within 10 seconds, it restarts itself. very scary... this has happened to me more than 10 times while on the highway..it also happens at random times, anyday, anytime, any speed. sometimes when it dies, i have to wait about 10 to 15 minutes before it will start up again.... very frustrating!!!!!! *tr

I own a 1999 jeep grand cherokee laredo and in the past i guess around 6 months it has been parked because noone can figure out what the problem is.the vehicle used to be so dependable and then one day it wouldn't start after i drove it about 15 minutes and shut it off,but i could let it sit for about 20 to 30 minutes and it would start right up.after a few weeks i couldn't drive it anymore because it was stalling more often and i never knew when it was gonna start or not.i had it put on the computer at advance and they mention the number 3 not firing but noone can figure out why my very dependable vehicle all of a sudden was very dangerous.please help me if u can,i am a single mother with no transportation.i have been reading entries by other jeep owners and i have a little hope since alot of them are having the same problem. *tr
Just another recall on the grand cherokee. http://www.dailyfinance.com/2014/10/16/chrysler-alternator-mirror-recalls/?icid=maing-grid7%7chtmlws-main-bb%7cdl38%7csec1_lnk3%26plid%3d546817 "published in the daily finance". on september 8, 2014 i wrote to you regarding out 1999 jeep grand cherokee and all the problems we have been having since 2013. please see the original complaint. your confirmation number (odi number) is: 10631491 now once again there are more recalls, and i/we still own our 1999. i still do believe that chrysler is responsible for the problems with the 1999. just because the jeep is a 1999, does not mean that chrysler should not be held responsible for the fixing of this car. we just want it fixed, to be safe to drive. i still feel they should carry the burden of this. not the consumer. *tr
Help! we have been experiencing random electrical malfunctions for more than two (2) years with no end in sight. we've gone to two (2) local jeep dealerships and spent more than $2,000.00 to find and repair the problems only to have the same problems return over and over: 1.) all dash / instruments and lights such as the check engine, check gauges, speedometer, tachometer (including the air bag) come on & stay on. 2.) the fuel & battery gauges fluctuate and then the gauges fail to register.. 3.) the windows, sunroof and all doors often fail to operate... the windows do not operate when the engine is running. we believe our problems may have to do with the tipm module. just saw on the news that several jeeps have had the same problems, and it showed exactly the same thing that is happening to my 1999. it is now 2014, and they have never been able to fix it. at first, one dealership said no charge for service because they (the dealer) had contacted chrysler. chrysler it seemed had assumed the responsibility, but when these problems kept happening and happening they give up, and put the burden on us. this is an electrical problem which we believe chrysler has all assumed the responsibility by their first actions. we need to get this fixed. these problems were not caused by us. we are dealing with electrical problems beyond our control? we believe these are problems known to the manufacturer. this is a dangerous situation, if the air bag won't work, or the windows won't open. please see the link below to the cbs news video report. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/auto-group-says-nerve-center-defect-behind-chrysler-problems. *tr

Went out shopping. drove 15 minutes from home. car running at normal operating temps. went into store for 10 minutes, on return car would not start. would crank and turn over, but not fully start. after letting sit for 1 hour, the car started with no other action. while trying to start, all other functions worked ok. radio. a/c. headlamps. etc. car also starting stalling after the "no-start" issue began. stalled at any temp, any speed, highway, around town. car stalls, but still have lights, flashers etc. *tr
I purchased this jeep and not even a month after having it cut off with driving down the road. it will say i have no gas and the tank will be full. at times it would start other times it had to be towed (3 times in fact). this has happened 5 or 6 times at all different speeds. i took it to a dealership 450.00 later still had the problem. this is very scary for the jeep to shut off while driving. i have two small children. i am wondering how is there not recall for this. as i have read clearly this is not just my jeep. this is a huge safety concern. another thing i also notice i can hit a bump then it beeps and tells me my hood is open. which it is not. i love my jeep but cant enjoy it bc scared that it will cut off at anytime. *tr
Rear lights (brake and park) stopped working. *tr
Intermittent stalling problem when moving, very dangerous, about rear ended numerous times. dealer can not fix, just throw money at it in parts hoping to fix the problem. this needs to be addressed by jeep before someone is killed!!!!!!!! *tr
My truck back lights doesn't work when i turn my lights on. i called the dealership and they stated that it will cost $1000 to fix because it is an electrical problem. i really like my truck and would love for to keep it but i can not drive it at night. i have seen to many cars to explain in the atlanta area that are experiencing the same problems, and i do not think that it is fair that we pay our money for these cars and the dealer doesn't inform to us that there needs to be a recall on our vehicles and fix them, my husband has a ford truck and when they recalled something on his truck and they called him and sent him a letter and he took his truck and they fixed it with no problems i don't understand why it can't be the same way with jeep. please if you can help please do.
My 99 jeep grand cherokee limited just started having a problem with the air bag light and chime when steering wheel is turned. and it sounds like a very common problem with many people. this problem may or may not have caused an injury but what is it going to take to keep your loyal jeep customers from thinking that this company does not care about it customers safety! this safety problem should be recalled and done very soon before there are injuries or loyal customers deaths from a simple fix. *tr
I have a 1999 grand cherokee, the headlights flash on and off when the car is parked and shut off. *tr
When i turned on the heat one fall day i got hot air on the driver side and cold air on the passenger side. it doesn't matter whether i select defrost, floor, or mid-level vents.also i had the temperature settings on high. i have not repaired this yet, it is a safety issue due to difficulty defrosting the windshield. the dealership said it will be very costly. it is not intermittent because it is always failed. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 jeep grand cherokee. while driving between 30 and 50 mph, the vehicle shut off in the middle of the road without warning. the contact almost crashed at the time of the failure and lost control of the vehicle before pulling off to the shoulder. the vehicle would not restart immediately most times, but would start approximately three to four minutes later. the dealer could not determine the cause of the failure. the failure mileage was 135,000. updated 11/17/08 *cn the consumer believed the problem was electrical. updated 11/24/08. *jb
Tl* the contact owns a 1999 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that while driving, the headlight was turned on the light was diffused by the headlight lens. the contact stated that the lighting visibility was decreased. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the headlight globe needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 09e025000 (exterior lighting:headlights). the approximate failure mileage was 150,000. updated 11/19/15*lj
Noise coming from the temperature controller in the center dash area even after the key has been removed. when running heater is on full on both sides with very low heat coming out on one side with cold air on the other. i have been told this will cost up to 1500.00 to fix at the dealer with some reports saying it "may" need to be done again after 50-60 thousand miles. also, blower motor controller located by the blower starts burning smell!! when it auto the control board failed and then blower quit. the motor must be replaced along with a wiring harness repair kit!!!! please tell me why no recall on this. it is such an issue the parts needed were on back order!! *tr
Everything that lights up as soon as i turn my car on and makes all the alert sounds. the car's gauges, engine, break, abs, air bag, gas tank, the key, all lights up making the gas gage going up & down all the time and ringing like if i was out of gasoline, the radio buttons freeze. is being 3 months. mechanics cannot find the problem, i replaced the battery, check all the fuses, change the keys' batteries, and can't find the problem. *tr
The ignition cylinder failed and the key will not turn in the ignition, therefore stranding the driver and passengers. *jb
I have a 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited. i have had the vehicle since it had 29,000 miles and it now has approx. 81,000. i have replaced three of the five locking mechanisms on the vehicle and now have two more that need replacing. this is not acceptable. the door locks allow for me to open the corresponding door or rear hatch sometimes but most of the time do not allow me to open the door or rear tailgate at all. when the rear tailgate lock is allowing for me to open the rear tailgate it will not lock at all. my vehicle has sat in my driveway every night without anyway for me to lock it. when it is stuck in the locked position it will not open because there is no way for me to manually open the rear tailgate. when the driver side lock went out it locked me out of the vehicle because there is some type of electrical drain on the vehicle as well, the key less entry fob could obviously not unlock the other doors. this is just one of the frustrating issues that i have had with the locking mechanisms on my vehicle. i was told by the dealership that it would cost approx. $250 per door in locking mechanisms alone to get replaced this time! i am pissed off and at a loss. i have replaced these locks before and it should never be an issue for me the entire life that i own this vehicle, especially not this many times. i may have the previously repaired items for review. please help me find some type of solution to this problem since i am out of money and out of patience. thank you. *tr
Ac blend doors don't work causing my heat/ac to only work on have the car at a time. in the winter my defroster is only able to defrost half my windshield and the other side has ice cold air coming out the vent witch makes it unable to defrost and causes me to drive with half a defrosted windshield. so half the car gets heat the other half gets ac all winter long no matter what setting you put the system on, this will eventually cause a accident if not addressed. *tr
I have a 1999 jeep cherokee, it have so many problems and not safe to drive, and it could not start. please investigate and help. thanks. *nm
Auto had 40000+ miles when i bought it from my brother. i had it only a few months when it stalled on the interstate. it would not start until i sat for a little while. i am capable of overcoming auto trouble so i didn't think much about this incident due to the fact that i have been a mechanic for many years now. then it began to stall in heavy traffic and sometimes would start again and other times after waiting several minutes. i replaced the crank sensor, in-tank fuel pump and filter. it ran okay for a while but began to hard start and stall again about 2 mos. ago. then 2 days ago it stalled something like 25 times coming home from the hospital. since then i have been on the internet reading the blogs about this problem and if everyone that has this issue would email you, your computers would shut down. it is unbelievable that the manufacturer is just replacing the expensive parts at random, taking the money and not fixing the problem. these people, myself included, are begging for a solution to a problem with a very nice automobile made in america by skilled top dollar union labor. it is getting close to scam epidemic. my car is sitting in my garage not fixed because there are about ten different things in the electrical and fuel system that can cause these symptoms. i am a disabled veteran and cannot afford to go down that eliminating process. my doctor doesn't do me that way and i won't allow the manufacturer to do it either. *tr
The blower motor which regulates the hvac system on the 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited has burn up causing the part to melt. please refer to http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://home.cogeco.ca/~infinite/jeep/hvac%2520faults/module%2520unplugged.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.jeepsunlimited.com/forums/showthread.php%3ft%3d678590&h=480&w=640&sz=52&hl=en&start=12&um=1&tbnid=svxiqjmj123oum:&tbnh=103&tbnw=137&prev=/images%3fq%3djeep%2bblower%2bmotor%2bresistor%26svnum%3d10%26um%3d1%26hl%3den%26rls%3dcom.microsoft:*%26sa%3dn. *tr
Vehicles dies under any circumstances...speeding on the highway at 75 mph, idling at a stop sign, driving in town at 35 mph, hot weather, cold weather, rain, sun and snow. it sometimes starts right up again, sometimes takes an hour - occasionally 5-10 hours before it will restart. instrument panel simply goes dead, engine stops, no warning. this has nearly caused accidents 15-20 times. towed 8 times...waited it out the rest. dealer will not help unless they can duplicate problem - cannot duplicate an intermittent problem, so there 'is no problem'. personal mechanic identified the problem as the computer, tried to order one from jeep several times, always told it is on backorder. interesting... back ordered part for 'no problem'. the computer was apparently replaced just before i purchased the car. *nm
Dt: contact stated the air conditioner blower motor malfunctioned. repairs were done at the contact's expense. also, the air bag warning light came on at different times. *ak the blower motor and wiring harness had to be replaced. the consumer was told they had melted together. updated 01/04/06. *jb
My wife was driving the jeep one day when the air conditioner stopped working. after further adjusting the system, she concluded something must be wrong with the fan, as the heat would not work either. when i took it to oak hill automotive, it turned out that the blower module had melted; when the blower module melted, it also destroyed the control harness. the technician at oak hill automotive commented that if he had fixed one of these, he had fixed a hundred. also, the control harness was expected to be a custom part, but it was in stock. the cause for the melting is unknown, though the repair shop speculated there might be a short in the system.
99 jeep gc limited 30,000 miles. replaced rear end. replaced rotors and pads 3 times. replace transmission sensor. replace hood rams. needs new front differential. *jb
Jeep shutdown while driving on interstate, instrument panel disabled except for the following three indicators: no key indicator, check gage indicator, one beep then the check engine indicator would come on. would have to wait 15 to 60 minutes before jeep would start again. took vehicle to dealer and had the following repairs: hanged ignition keyholder on steeling wheel replaced fuel pump (twice). replaced fuel pump modulator (separate repair). replaced gage modulator. problem still occurs, problem resembles service bulletin 081599. *ak
The taillight and brake lights on our 1999 jeep grand cherokee burn out every 2 months. the light holder for the bulbs melts due to the heat from the bulbs and after replacing the bulbs four times the holder has melted enough that there is no contact with the bulbs thus no taillights or brake lights. i have noticed this problem with several of the same models around town. the dealer is willing to sell a new light fixture for $150.00 plus labor. if i pay this just to have the same problem happen again within a year this is not right. today i read where gm recalled 1mil suv for this very problem. *jb
Tl*- the contact stated that the 1999 jeep grand cherokees heater and air conditioner were not operating normally. then she smelled smoke when the heat was on, and was afraid that vehicle may catch on fire. this only occurred when the heat was on high. the blower motor and the harness have been replaced.*ak the dealer replaced the blower motor resistor. update 04/30/07*tr
Whenever the headlights were in use the switch failed to work properly for either turning the headlights on or off. the head lights would also flash on and off intermittently while driving. this caused poor visibility for the driver. the vehicle was taken to the dealer but the technician was unable to resolve the electrical problem. *nlm
1999 jeep grand cherokee limited. only 45,000 miles. vehicle stalled when making turns and now stalls when operating at high speeds. last time vehicle was traveling approximately 65 miles an hour and stalled. usually the vehicle will start back up as soon as it is put in neutral and you turn the key. but on some occasions vehicle has had to sit for approximately 15 minutes before starting again. vehicle has been towed to a dealership on 2 occasions and each time when it arrives and is checked by mechanics it starts up. mechanics and computer checks revealed no problem at the dealership. people have said that is possibly a computer problem in the vehicle and the reason the dealers found nothing wrong is the computer resets itself each time the jeep is restarted. not sure but the dealerships cannot give me any advice on what to do to fix the problem. i cannot afford another vehicle and i am worried that vehicle stalling at high speeds is going to result in an accident. please let me know if this is a problem you have found in other jeeps and if you know a remedy. jeep has also had electrical problems in the past such as two auto door locks going bad, air conditioner went bad, and the battery failed. not sure if this is related somehow or not. check of past owner records shows maintenance for check engine light at 21418 miles (2/19/01) and 33488 (2/28/02) and automatic transmission problems at 33488 miles. *tt
The driver side door did not lock with the automatic locking system.*jb
The air bag light was intermittent. *jb the passenger side window and the driver side lock assembly was inoperative. the dealer was not willing to do anything to help. scc
While driving on the nj trnpke, the vehicle lost power and coasted towards the shoulder. driver pulled over, and opened the hood, and didn't notice anything. while on the ramp, the vehicle started smoking and the thermometer gauge had begun to rise. the vehicle then bursted into flames . *ak the consumer states that as they got on the ramp, a passing driver waved, and the consumer looked in the rear view mirror and saw the smoke coming from the engine compartment, possible ecectrical system failure. *scc
The vehicle exhibits a sag/hesitation following a partial cool down restart, possibly an oxygen sensor problem. while making hard left turns at slow speeds (such as a u-turn), the airbag warning light illuminates and a audible chime is activated. the right side brake light assembly is burnt (internally) due to some kind of electrical overheating. the vehicle shifts hard, misses shifts, shifts repeatedly at constant speed and on a level grade. the rear differantial "bumps" very hard within 3-20 seconds of coming to a complete stop. an immovable "fog" has developed on the lenses of the composite headlight assemblies.*ak
