Recently reported VISIBILITY problems on 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

In my 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited the blend door for the heating/air conditioning make a ton of noise, and fail quite often. it is a huge problem that is very expensive to fix and every dealer tells me it is a problem straight from the factory. *tr

Two problems: 1. the blower motor resistor burnt out and the ac/head fan quit working. it was sparking when i managed to disconnect the wire. luckily, i was stopped and could reach it in time - had i been driving its very possible my vehicle would have burnt up. 2. no heat. entire last winter i was forced to drive 2 hours per day constantly wiping fog off my windshield. i was told by a 'mechanic' it was a clogged heater core so i had to put up with it because i did not have the money to fix it at the time. dangerous and cold, but i had no choice. now i am trying to get my vehicle repaired i start researching and find there are entire web sites devoted solely to these two problems. 1. blower motor resistor shorts out. to properly repair you have to replace the resistor and the dashboard wiring harness... very costly!! $600+ 2. no heat due to bad blend doors. $1200+ 3. both of these appear to affect jeeps 1999-2004 year models how can jeep continue to knowingly sale automobiles with 1 - a fire and safety hazard with the faulty resistor? 2 - a safety hazard with no heat due to faulty blend doors? google it... both of these are very well known problems with these vehicles and are not isolated incidents. please look at these two links provided. they just start to scratch the surface of how bad this problem really is. jeep should be responsible for repairing both of these problems as they are both safety issues and they knew about them prior to the sale, not to mention the cost of repairing these items places an unfair burden on the owner since fair trade would mandate these known and recurring defects should have been disclosed prior to sale. these are not rare or isolated incidents, they are known problems jeep failed to disclose or repair. http://www.wjjeeps.com/blower_motor.htm http://www.topix.net/forum/autos/jeep-grand-cherokee/tserat48371icob68/p6 *tr

Visibility: defroster/defogger system:windshield:blower blend door failure - tsb

1999 jeep grand cherokee limited, dual zone heating and cooling. problem is passenger side blows only cold air, will not blow hot. same problem 1,000's others have. *tr

Visibility: defroster/defogger system:windshield:blower . heating system continues to fail which presents a safety hazard when i'm driving and the windows become fogged over. some days the defroster works but most of the time it does not. the unit continually blows cold air out even if the heater is on. *jb

The heating / cooling system in my 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited stopped working. now it currently only blows hot air from one vent (driver's side, mid-level). every other vent in the vehicle blows only cold air. the air conditioning system does not work whatsoever. neither of the temperature control switches work (for passenger / driver side). i have read on the internet that this seems to be quite a problem for this model jeep. i have gotten quotes to repair the problem and it will cost over $1000. i have done nothing since it is quite expensive and will leave me without my vehicle for some time. the heating / cooling system never works at all. *tr

I have a 1999 jeep grand cherokee and i noticed that my a/c blows mildly cold air. i recharged it thinking that it needed freon but that wasn't the case. this winter i noticed that my heat was not as hot as it should be. new england winters can get into the single digits and the lack of heat can make it almost impossible to defrost the windshield, making visibility very poor. after doing research on the web, i found out that my problem is all too common with jeep cherokee owners. it seems that jeeps have faulty blend doors made of cheap plastic and they almost all break. the repair requires removal of most of the dashboard and can lead to estimates leading anywhere between $1,000-$1,800. daimler chrysler is aware of the problem with the faulty devices and fails to accept the responsibility and post a recall on this issue. *tr

The heater fan in my 1999 jeep grand cherokee stopped working and there was a burning smell in the car. mechanic found that the fan resistor (computer) and pigtail that connects to it were burned up. he checked with jeep and there are 3,000 of these items back ordered because this is a problem on many of these vehicles. its winter and 17 degrees in my car i could freeze with my family or my dashboard could catch on fire. *jb

This is concerning a 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited edition, i am writing due to repeated problems with the defrost control inability to clear or keep clear the windshield. cold outside air blows from the defrost vents, and does not clear the windshield of frost or moisture, or causes moisture to re-freeze. this is caused by the failure of the blend doors in the heating system. this occurs while driving after allowing the vehicle to warm and the windshield to clear. this is a re-occurring problem, the dealers service manager says that all wj series jeep grand cherokees with the dual climate control will have this problem and will cost between $1200 and $1800 to repair and that the repair is not permanent, just a fix until the parts breaks again. at this time this has not been repaired at the advice of the service mgr of my jeep dealer, he recommended filing this complaint as he says there should be a recall on this issue. *jb

Visibility: defroster/defogger system:windshield:blower ac/heater/defroster blower no longer operates properly. ac self-diagnostic codes indicate "temp door/recirc door travel too large". no combination of control settings will make the blower/fan operate. *jb

99 jeep grand cherokee limited will only blow out cold air. no heat at all. get ac codes of 52, 54, 56 from the diagnostic screen. *jb

Ac blend doors don't work causing my heat/ac to only work on have the car at a time. in the winter my defroster is only able to defrost half my windshield and the other side has ice cold air coming out the vent witch makes it unable to defrost and causes me to drive with half a defrosted windshield. so half the car gets heat the other half gets ac all winter long no matter what setting you put the system on, this will eventually cause a accident if not addressed. *tr

When the heat is turned on in my 1999 jeep grand cherokee, cold air blows out of the passenger-side vents, freezing my passengers. i have read that this is a problem that all 1999-2004 grand cherokees have, and jeep should put out a recall. this is a very expensive repair! *tr

Blend door failure causing fogging of windshield. *nm

I'm having issues with broken blend doors and recirculation doors on my 1999 jeep grand cherokee with the dual zone climate control. *nm

Defroster/defogger in my 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited is non-functional. the passenger side has no heat at all, but my main concern is the defroster which makes it impossible for me to see out of my windshield now that colder weather is here. *jb

The hvac system on my 99 jeep grand cherokee is faulty. *jb

Blend door failure. cost $1100. *jb

Blend door broke on passenger and driver vents. blows only cold air. *jb

Blend doors broke for no reason causing the vehicle to blow only cold air. heater doesn't work and what's required is having to rip the dash out and replace the blend doors. *tr

Wj jeep grand cherokee blend door breakage/failure visibility: defroster/defogger system:windshield:blower. *jb

Fogging of windshield due to improper design of the hvac on my jeep. this si the second time it has broken, with only 55,000 miles on my 99 grand cherokee limited. *nm

When i bought the vehicle from jeep dealership i was told that there was a problem with ac/ heating unit and it had been fixed. not long after i have no heat and no ac coming out of my passenger side vents. now i have no heat or a.c out of any vents and all i get is outside air. *tr

No heat on passenger side - due to the infamous "blend door" problem. *jb

1999 jeep grand cherokee ltd, blend door on hvac/defroster stopped working. *nm

(1) no warning (2) cold air coming out of passengers side heater vents all the time, also this makes it next to impossible to defrost the passenger side windshield. (3)i was told it cost $1200 to fix this, and i do not have the money right now to do this. *jb

Very unsafe malfunction of the "blend doors" in my heater mechanism. my father's 2003 has the same problem. heat and defrost air only comes out one side, can't see out all the windshield!!! dealer knows about the problem, says if you only have one bad one, might as well replace them both with the new redesigned parts for $1600 - $1800. help! *jb

The a/c heat blend doors on my 1999 jeep grand cherokee ltd. with only 61,000 miles have failed and the system only blows cold air. this is very dangerous in winter driving conditions and as i read online it happened to almost 100% of these vehicles after they pass 50k miles. my father has a 2001 and has had the exact same issue. the repair is $1,800 and even the dealership told me it happens to all models 1999 through 2002 or 3. this should be a recall item not a chance for jeep to make money off of a factory defect. *nm

1999 grand cherokee limited blend door problem this problem is on every jeep i read about this is a massive error on jeep there should be a recall.thanks, normand. *nm

Heater failed on passenger side. traced by repair shop to failed hvac blend door. *tr

Air conditioning and heater does not work properly. blend door keeps breaking. *tr

Jeep grand cherokee, 1999. blend air door mechanism broke preventing defrosting of the windows. *tr

Climate control unit faulty, "common" fault with this vehicle make / type, climate control unit unable to maintain temperature, blows cold when it shouldn't be, i am informed it is a fault with the blend doors, and to repair is very very costly as the whole dashboard has to be removed, parts are available but cost of repair is very expensive. *jb

Hearter blend door in heater box not turning. *nm

Hvac on my 1999 jeep grand cherokee ltd. has failed and the system only blows cold air. this makes the vehicle inoperable in cold days of winter: windshield cannot be properly ventilated. this happens to almost 100% of these vehicles after just 50k miles. and even the dealership says it happens to all models 1999 through 2002 or 3. this should be a recall item, not a tsb! right now it's just a chance for jeep to make an extra $1,800 off of a factory defect. *nm

1999 jeep grand cherokee blend doors are failing to provide heat or defrosting. concerned about visibility and numbness. unbelievable amount of complaints on this to the company. *tr

No incident. faulty parts that every owner will have to repair at some time. the hvac system blend doors fail blowing only cold air. all owner will or had this problem. repair cost for mine was $850.00. this repair may have to be repeated at later dates. *tr

All of the sudden there was no air blowing out of the inside vents, i took it to my mechanic who explained that the blower quit working and the left side heater quit working as well. my mechanic fixed the blower because it was easily accessible and charged me $200 to fix it but not the heater because he explained he will have to remove the whole front dash and will cost a labor a about $500. i contacted the jeep dealership who explained that services will not be covered under the warranty for this issue. i know a lot of jeep owners who have had these same problems. i am afraid chrysler did not equipped the vehicles with high quality blowers and or heaters. a recall on this issue from the manufacturer is needed! *tr

I have 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited that the rear window is not safe for a child at all my 4 year old son got his hand rolled up between the glass and the rear of the door pillar luckily he screamed before real damage could have been done. i don't know why this was never looked at by jeep cause the grand cherokee has the same body style from 1999 to 2004. *nm

The contact stated the blower fan stopped working and he could not defrost his windshield. at that time, he could smell an electrical fire. the vehicle was taken to the dealership ,and they determined the wiring harness for the blower motor melted. he replaced the harness and the resister for the blower fan himself. *ak

The climate control on my 1999 jeep grand cherokee will randomly create loud creaking and crunching noises from under the dash and will cause a sudden drastic temperature change. this causes the defroster not to operate correctly and the windows to instantly fog up. this first occurred in october of 2005 and has happened over a dozen times reducing my visibility sometimes to nothing at all. the dealer cannot find any problems and will not investigate any further. *jb

My vehicle has the exact same problem as another vehicle manufactured by the same company (daimler chrysler), that vehicle is a 2002 dodge ram, the nhtsa campaign id number is 03v078000. on my vehicle the connection for the blower motor controller is undersized, with heat from the electrical current the connector loosens and causes the blower motor to cut out, it also causes melting to the blower motor controller itself and the electrical connections. for the mentioned recall daimler chrysler installs a wiring harness overlay, the solution to my problem is the same, they make a wiring harness overlay, the problem however is that the heat from the electrical current damages the blower motor controllers housing and electrical connections, which means that this part needs to be replaced as well in order to correct the problem. the consequences to this failure is that the blower motor becomes inoperable and during times when the defrost is necessary such as cold weather, the blower motor can cut out and reduce visibility. if you read my complaint you'll see it's the exact same problem as the recall i've mentioned. i have researched and investigated this situation thoroughly and am sure it's the same. i only found out about the other recall because i was explaining the problem to my brother who owns a 2002 dodge ram and he told me it sounded exactly the same as his problem that was a recall, so you can see that it clearly is the same problem. *nm

I have a 1999 jeep grand cherokee, and the passenger side blows hot air even when the temperature of the dual climate control is set lower than the driver. i have read in forums and many other jeep owners have the same problem. *nm

Cold air blows from one side of the dash even when you have the heat turned on making defroster inoperable in the cold. this is extremely dangerous in the cold. dashboard has loud creaking sound coming from its underside when ventilation is turned and creaking from the dash seconds after shutting the engine off. these jeeps are known to have this severe safety issue. *nm

1999 jeep grand cherokee limited heater doesn't work. no heat on either side whatsoever. 116k miles and from the way the seller is responding to my query about it is that its been that way for a while now. have heard that possibly the control module(relay) melts as well which is a reason as to why i smell a faint burnt plastic smell when i turn the air on whether it be heater or a/c it smells. *tr

I have had an issue with the heating and cooling unit on the dual zone control in the past, about 4,500 miles ago, and took it into the dealership to have them fix the problem. i took it into get repaired because it was not fogging or defrosting my vehicles windshield and i was unable to see during the winter when i was driving up to colorado and had to stop every few minutes to wipe off the condensation. this was a terrifying event since it was snowing on the highway i was traveling on and there were vehicles trying to control their own vehicles which i could not see. at one point when i needed to pull the vehicle over and wipe off the condensation and unfreeze the windshield wipers from the windshield i was unable to see the railing and hit it, thankfully i was only going about 5 mph but i still banged up my bumper a little but at least i didn't die. this is an issue that is obviously due to the poor design of the vehicle since it has now gone out again in less than 5,000 miles. i cannot believe that daimler chrysler has not recalled the parts that cause this problem and are waiting for someone to die from this design before they will do the right thing and recall. it costs more than $800 to repair the first time and i cannot afford to fix this issue just so that i can see the cars that are on the road and the lines to stay in my lane. please help! *tr

Both blend doors and/or hvac door stops have gone out. no, heat which means no window defrosting. *jb

Rh side including defrost duct blows out only cold air, making defrost on the rh side difficult. *nm

Blend \ actuator doors are "stuck" open on the passenger side. that's outside air coming in all the time through the defroster, dash vents, foot wells and the rear passenger side foot area. tough in the winter! had the problem while under warranty, but dealer said they couldn't find anything wrong. now, 2 years later, they say it's the blend doors and maybe the evaporator unit also. they quoted $1700. to pull the dash and repair. this is on our 1999 grand cherokee limited with now 117,000 miles. don't want to go through another winter with cold air coming in, and afraid the entire system will fail. with this economy, also don't have $1,700. to put into the truck either. i believe the dealership was aware of the problem first time around. after learning about the on-line chat rooms regarding jeeps , i see that about 20% of all grand cherokee limited and overland owners are having this problem. chrsyler should step up and fix this! *tr

I am not sure this is the correct place for this so if not maybe you could direct me to the proper place for my complaint.i have a 99 jeep grand cherokee about 20 months ago the blend doors in the automatic climate control broke the cost for this was around $1000.00, last month the same problem occured and jeep being aware of the problem updated the part so as to not fail so easily in jan 2004. i still had to pay for a complete repair again. my question is there anyway to get someone involved that can look into this poorly engineered item. sincerely daniel knight. *ak
