Recently reported STRUCTURE problems on 2006 Jeep Commander

I have a 2006 jeep commander 4x4 and all the interior door handles are broken. this is dangerous because i have three kids that sit in the backseats and when it is time to exit the vehicle they cant get the doors to open. i have to work with my door handle to get it to open and then go to their door to open it. this is extremely dangerous because on all but one door u can only exit out when someone opens the doors from the outside. *tr

Apparently there is/was a defect in either the design or production of the door handle assembly in the 2006 jeep commanders. the plastic housing which contains the door opening mechanism becomes too brittle and cracks rendering the opening mechanism inoperable. on my commander all but one door is affected. at the moment, only two out of the four doors work, the front-side passenger and the driver-side rear. if this vehicle was in an accident in which there was a need to exit quickly (fire or water), the lives of my family would be in extreme jeopardy. i posted a video on youtube, and have heard from many other with the same issue. chrysler jeep produced approximately 80,000 of these vehicles in 2006. i truly believe there are thousands of there jeep commanders on the road with this same issue. in fact the condition is so prevalent; one company is producing an after-market repair kit. please see my video at the following link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffq0oki7zjy. *tr

Got a 2006 jeep commander defected door panels door knob has fallen off on two doors such a safety issue ever had a fire or was to hav a accident in water would be screwed not cool and why is jeep being made so cheap these days days never seen such cheap plastics like this vehicle was made of should have stayed with toyota please help us fix this issue thanks. *tr

Inside doors failing all four are cracked the driver side passenger does not open from the inside. if in an accident they might all fail and then no one will be able to exit the car, if a fire happens or we just need to get out for other reason. we will need to open windows, to open door from outside, which might not be possible if wrecked and windows fail. if replaced and defect is not fixed it dealers will not help and average price as 450.00 dollars per door. when we purchased the jeep in 2008 we not informed of this problem. thank you for your time and consideration in this matter. *tr

Basically the door handle mechanisms disintegrated. the drivers side front and rear door plastic that surrounds the door handles broke into several small pieces and fell inside the door. i feel this is a danger because eventually the cable that opens the doors will break and i will not be able to open the doors. i have checked into having them repaired but it was very expensive due to the fact that the plastic around the handles is 1 piece with the rest of the plastic of the inside of the door. also, although this is not a danger - the display screen for all the of electronics of the car, went black several years ago. i am unable to access a lot of the information about the car. we paid over $43,000 for the car - these things should not happen. the door handle really scares me. i have signed petitions to have this recalled as well as contacted the manufacturer. it seems to be a common problem with this car. thank you *tr

Hi my jeep commander has been in garage most of the time one day it stayed out in the rain and all the water got in the driver side and the electrical system failed radio shut off and on same with the dashboard lights, headlights and interior lights the it would stay on dash service suspension system check gauges the check engine would com on the battery and the oil and the tire pressure and sometimes it wont start the other day it shut off while driving i have 4 kids and im afraid it could happen when they re with me and they could get hurt i called chrysler and they take no responsibility for this problem i'm reporting this to the bbb and to the consumers affairs hopefully someone will help. *tr

All 4 interior door opening handles breaking/failing: 1 rear door totally inoperable. ***this is a dangerous safety issue if handles break or are inoperable in certain emergency situations, passengers may not be able to exit the vehicle, causing serious injury or death!*** manufacturer charge to replace/repair handles is prohibitively expensive: in my case, the cost of six (6) monthly car payments! manufacturer safety recall warranted! *tr

How many specific incident reports does the nhtsa need before they require chrysler to explain their faulty/defective interior door handles? please review the high number of complaints that point to failure of the 2006 jeep commander's interior door handles and begin the process to require a safety recall. this is not a cosmetic issue. this is a safety issue. the plastic housing that holds the interior door handles is brittle, causing the handle to break, which renders the handle inoperable (from the inside). occupants report having to roll down their window to unlatch the door from the outside. the shear number of complaints (both in your website and on various jeep on-line forums) indicates that this is a major issue that can not be attributed to rough handling. *tr

Paint on front tip of hood bubbling. took jeep into get painted and they said it was due to water getting between the hood and frame - couldn't fix, and will come back within a year. *tr

The driver and passenger side door handles have gradually cracked and fallen apart so that it is almost impossible to open the door from the inside of the car. this problem has only occurred on the front doors, not the back-seat doors and began gradually back in 2009 - 2010. it has gotten to the point where both handles are falling behind the panel and we are very careful when opening the door now and prohibit us from being able to easily open the front door(s). my family and i have used care when opening the doors and have never used excessive force over the past 4-5 years so there is no logical reason why they have broken the same way on both sides.` *kb

Recall notice from chrysler. took commander into shop for repair. after 4 hours, technician stated that unable to download program from corporate computer to fix. need to bring car back later. this is the second time for a recall, and our car has been in there a total of 4 times for safety issues such as broken seat belts. it has been there a number of other visits, starting at 2555 miles, for defective windshield mount, defective gas fill line mount, and defective windshield wiper fluid pump. previous hazards were handled, but resulted in a good number of days of at least 6 hour services. now, after 4 hours, this service is not completed and i have to bring the car back again. *tr

2006 jeep commander 3 out of 4 interior door handles broken due to poor design in my opinion. was told by the dealer it was caused by abuse or normal wear and tear. both rear doors and the drivers door are broken the rear doors are hardly ever used so it isn't from wear and tear or abuse. im afraid if in a collision i would not be able to open the doors from the inside if i had to get out in a hurry.from looking at forums on the web im finding out it is a wide spread problem. in order to correct the problem each door panel must be replaced. chrysler has not redesigned the handles so in a couple of years they will have the same problem. *tr

I've noticed that my jeep is a money hungry machine. i bought it because i had previously owned a jeep cherokee lmt and needed something bigger and safer to haul around the boys i nanny. i bought it thinking i would have it for awhile. i have reported several safety and hazardous problems to nhtsa already. i have another complaint now. i have three rather large rust spots around my rear license plate on the tail gate. they have a warranty for rust up to 100,000 miles. i took it in to get repaired because i have 94,000 miles and they wont fix it because they state that it needs to be rusted through. i have not found in any form that it needs to be rusted through but they still wont fix it. the paint on both bumpers are peeling off and both have large black spots from the bumper being exposed. they wont help fix any of this. i am going to have to paint the entire thing which is going to be a very expensive out of pocket expense. i bought this jeep thinking it's american made and i should stick with them. quite frankly they have the worse costumer service of anyone i have been. i want to just get rid of the vehicle but they messed me over on my interest rate and my loan is still huge. i have refinanced and got with a company that treats me like a person. chrysler also messed up my credit rating by reporting that i went months without payment. i paid them and have disputed my credit. chrysler i realize were going into bankruptcy at the time of my vehicle purchase but that's no way to treat paying customers. my next vehicle will be a foreign for sure. im sick and tired of paying all these expenses when i picked an expensive vehicle so this wouldn't happen. it just sucks being in and out of shops, running up bill and not getting anything fixed, and being without a vehicle. please look into all these complaints...... alot on here i have experienced with mine, i will continue to leave complaints. it is very time consuming to constantly be doing it. *tr

The interior door handles were poorly designed and have all cracked only after a short period of time with normal use. this is a safety issue due to the fact that passengers would have difficulty exiting vehicle in emergency situations. i understand this is common problem in this vehicle. i've read numerous similar complaints from other owners. chrysler does seem to want recognize this as manufacturing/design flaw, which is unfortunate since it is rather costly to replace the door handles. to replace all four would cost $2,000 plus dollars. please do something to protect the customers, who deserve better. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the contact stated that the vehicle stalled numerous times while driving 20 mph and the check engine light illuminated during the failures. the vehicle was taken to a local repair shop, who stated that the failure was due to the pcm. an authorized dealer was notified and stated that the vehicle was not included in the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 08v203000 (power train: automatic transmission: control module (tcm, pcm)). the contact also stated that water penetrated the front passenger door handle and soaked the floor. the windows would also not roll up or down. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 30,000 and the current 70,000.

Drivers side and passenger side interior panel has cracked and fallen apart around the handle. *tr

Interior door handles/cup are made with brittle resin and fracture easy. with a broken cup the handle dangles in the door making exit very difficult without emergency repair. the repair requires the entire interior door panel to be replaced at a cost of $800 per door. prior to warranty expiring one door was repaired, however 2 more door handles are now broken. this is a common issue with jeep products and should have triggered a safety recall. *tr

My 2006 jeep commander has had a number of defects. the most costly has been that it leaks when it rains or goes through a car wash. i have had the sunroof clean out and the problems "fixed" in september but it has begun leaking again. when the vehicle had 38,000 miles on it i had to have the bearings in the driverside front wheel replaced costing me over 300.00 dollars. my mechanics informed me that the vehicle was to young to be having this part replaced. i'm just currently waiting for something else to go bad on my "young" vehicle. *tr

I own a 2006 jeep commander. in less than one year all four of my vehicle doors have cracked and broken beyond recognition. pieces have fallen from the doors, and the lever mechanisms work only half the time. most of the time the doors have to be opened from the outside, by another passenger. i feel that this is a saftey issue. each time that we attempt to exit the vehicle, it is very difficult to open the doors. if we should have an emergency, we will not be able to exit the vehicle. i have taken the car in for recall information, but i have never received a recall. each time that i have talked to a dealer, they have stated that no recalls are on file. *tr

2006 jeep commander the ignition key is located at knee height and perpendicular to the dash. i have accidentally turned off the car while driving at least three times. this occurs when moving the right knee side to side. because the key is horizontally located it rotates with little force if striking the dangling keys with the knee. a proper design would be having the ignition on the steering column, or having a slight superior angle to the key ignition. this is easily reproduced on all commander vehicles. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the contact stated that water was entering the vehicle from an unknown source. the contact was traveling approximately 60 mph when she first discovered the failure. the vehicle was taken to a private repair shop but was not diagnosed for the failure. the contact notified the manufacturer however, no remedy or assistance was offered. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 38,000. the current mileage was 87,000.

Vehicle continued stalling while is driven a low rpm. more the 25 times. vehicle was bought with 15, 200 miles. vehicle has now 52, 300. everytime is taken to service the problem was mention to the dealer technician but they can't find the problem. nov 20, 2007 i scratched the left rear fender of the vehicle with a tree while backing up. the vehicle lost power vehicle rolled back and stopped. resting on the side of the tree. pictures were taken of the damages on the vehicle . dealers technician states no problem with the vehicle. second problem backup system. assists the driver to move the vehicle safely, one sensor failed from the bumper mount. two months dealer has not repair the vehicle yet. need to replaced the entire bumper to repaired one sensor. *tr

Doors leak rust on the hinges now, knocking sound in the engine,be driving down the road all of sudden the jeep will not shift all gears are lit up have to stop shut down for 5 to 10 min. then will be ok been in the shop 10 times told i had electric lifters put a piece of weather strip in the door to fix leak they say rust is normal reset the transmission and a leak on it replaced motors to power windows still don't work right. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the contact stated that the entire vehicle was flooded with water. the water appeared to have originated from the handrails located on both sides of the windshield. the water leaked into the side of the instrument panel and the speakers. the dealer replaced the amplifier in the rear of the vehicle due to the extensive water damage. the engine size, powertrain, and a valid vin were unknown. the current and failure mileages were 7,368.

Sunroof and windshield has leak which caused water damage to my vehicle. i took my vehicle in with all the other defects that are now be discovered with this vehicle and the service people told me it was my fault for not cleaning the tubes near the sunroof. after servicing the jeep the service department discovered the problem still existed. this seems to be an ongoing problem so i now hired an attorney who is very familiar with these problems and has settled numerous settlements for all these defects. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the contact stated that while driving 10 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, who was unable to diagnose the failure. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 21,128 and the current mileage was 84,000. updated 08/28/12*lj updated 09/24/2012 *js

Commander xk jeep faulty/weak interior door panel 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 a problem with jeep commander owners the interior door panels circular plastic/chrome door handle snaps/breaks out resulting in the interior door handle drops behind the panel and unable to open the door from inside on all 4 doors. problem is that the pin and all the mechanism is mounted on the door panel itself. i need the tsb to repair as the dealer says to repair they must replace entire door panels at my cost, when obviously a weak design failure for all commanders 2006 to 2010. today june 2011 and the problem affects 2006 to 2010, the jeep dealers do not have a recall for the failure. the drivers door broke in 2007 and the passenger door broke in 2008 and now the right rear door panel is cracked and breaking out around the interior door handle. *tr

2006 jeep commander.....door handles and door handle rosette have failed on the drivers door and the rear passengers door. the materials used for this door handle assembly have failed due to normal wear and tear. the plastic appears to be very very thin. this now poses a serious safety issue with exiting the driver side front door and the passenger side rear door. about 6 months after i bought the jeep on the front drivers side door...a small hole (1/4") appeared in the center of the plastic door handle rosette. i was told by the dealership that this was due to abuse. now after three years i see that many many people have had the exact same problem. oh by the way my 5 year old granddaughter used the rear passenger door one day, after which we first noticed the broken door handle and handle rosette there. i have duct tape covering the hole and holding the door handle in a position that makes the door operable. this is a safety hazard that chrysler jeep needs to address. final insult. the dealer that i bought the jeep commander from was closed by chrysler. *tr

i purchased a 2006 jeep commander last year. i have had the following items replaced on my jeep front passenger interior door panel. strange noise coming from my car that sounded like playing cards in bike tires ended with replacing front axel ring and pinion. car kept popping out of gear the entire gear shift was replaced. my passenger window had to be fixed it kept sticking halfway up. i had a problem where my car kept stalling. i was told the first time that no error appears on the computer and jeep knew of no issue with cars stalling so maybe it was bad gas. it died several more times and finally they did replace a part inside the idol. i also had an issue where my headlights kept turning off as i drove or would flash on and off. they replaced the headlight switch. i have had the rubber stripping from my back driver side window come off and now it is occurring on the passenger side. from the beginning i have told them i do not feel my transmission is working properly that it shifts hard and when i shift from reverse to drive there is a big hesitation. i have been told no error is appearing on computer and that jeep as usual has no known issues so they had no suggestions. once again they thought it was a gas issue moving from winter to summer blend. the last time i had it in when it was stalling i told them it the transmission was still hesitating and would make a pop noise at times then it would go. it is still occurring and at times the car acts like it might not shift into drive. i am satisfied with how my dealership is working with me they are doing their best to help me. i blame jeep/chrysler all you have to do is search the web to see that there are so many others just like me with the exact same issue. they need to recall these cars now and if they can not find the problem then replace them for us. *tr

Physical deterioration and detachment of the inner door handle mechanisms on 2006 jeep commander. through normal wear, the rear driver side inner door handle physically failed fully. through normal wear the front driver side inner door handle has started to fail beginning with the recessed plastic portion directly behind the door handle becoming detached and separating along what appear to be stress lines. it appears that this will shortly lead to the full failure of the door handle from the inside of the vehicle making exit from the vehicle infeasible without access to the outer door handle. *tr

Purchased new 2006 limited model. windshield leaks, causing water to stand in front floorboards. returned to dealer twice for repair. initially the windshield was re-sealed. second fix was replacement of door gasket.

Water leak from front windshield which wets the a-frame inside as well as the carpets in the front. along with this, there is a loud whistling noise that comes from the windshield at 50 mi or higher speed. this is dangerous since it seems there is a gap between the windshield and the frame. the water damage could be happening for months, while the jeep was in the dealer lot too. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated there was rust on the base of the front seat. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who declared all jeep commanders rust in that manner and did not provide any solution to correct the problem. the manufacturer was contacted and no solution was provided. the weatherstrip on the right rear door did not fit properly and the trim around the radio did not fit as well. updated 08/21/06. *jb

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the contact stated that water was entering the vehicle from the driver side front roof, where the dome light and handle was located on top of each other. the vehicle was taken to the dealer numerous times where they glued the area so that water would not come through and the sun roof was modified. the manufacturer was contacted who offered no assistance. the failure mileage was 100 and the current mileage was 85,000.

Dt*: the contact stated the glass of the rear liftgate opened forcefully. no injuries were sustained, but the contact expressed that the rapid opening of the liftgate could cause serious facial injuries. *ak

Windshield easily cracks. door handles is wobbly and then cracks and falls out of panel. *tr

Windshield isn't sealed properly which causes a loud whistling noise while driving. dealer could not fix problem. further more, the seal problem seems to make the windshield more sensitive to being damaged. *tr

My 2006 commander with 40,000 miles has had the following problems since it came off the lot. the vehicle stalls and i obviously lose power and steering but there are no error messages in the computer, the 4wd does not engage - the warning light for that comes on but there's no error message in the computer. the window's roll up and down incorrectly - the gasket on the exhaust manifold has been replaced and the kicker of all problems is when the vehicle goes through a minor puddle of water or the automatic car wash the steering wheel locks completely until the water is gone - try driving that in the rain - jeep was finally able to duplicate that problem by putting a garden hose under the car and squirting water on the underside of the vehicle - this problem apparently cannot be fixed and they can't believe that no other jeep owner's aren't throwing fits. so much for the lemon law - the steering problem wasn't taken seriously by the previous jeep dealers -i went to a different dealer altogether however, it's too late. *tr
