Recently reported STEERING problems on 2006 Jeep Commander

Had the ignition switch replaced according to recall. after a few months, it has become very difficult to get key to turn to start vehicle. took the vehicle to larry miller in albuquerque nm, they want to charge me 300.00 to repair. according to previous owner it worked fine before taking it in for recall.

Takata recall : my commander is having an issue where all the gears light up on the dash at the same time and power to the vehicle slows down drastically. the steering wheel is hard to control when this happens. the dash lights up service park assist system.the vehicle is in motion when this happens.

After having the recalled ignition and tcm replaced/reprogrammed the esp,bas and traction lights come and the two driver side brakes and tires lock up, makes a terrible grinding noise, and the vehicle slides while trying to make a turn. this problem occurs while the vehicle is in motion and without warning.

I went to start my 2006 jeep commander and it would turn over, but it would not start. i finally worked with it a little bit and got it to start, but then my power steering went out. i cut it off and tried it again and everything went back to normal. however, when i got going, there was a horrible gas smell coming from the rear of the vehicle. this starting issue has happened multiple times and every time the power steering goes out. the vehicle was stationary at a public place after it had been running for about 30 minutes.

We have a 2006 jeep commander and it sometimes jerks back and forth while driving sometimes it even shifts into neutral and then back to drive the power steering works only part of the time and the airbag system says its off all the time and it will shut off while driving sometimes too really frustrated with this vehicle its a disaster and waiting to happen

When i am driving on the main city road or highway i notice about three things that happen all at once. the first thing is i lose control of my steering. the second thing is it feels like my jeep went into park causing all my wheels to break for 1 to 3 second. the third thing is it feels as the engine stalled. all these things happen at the same time. this causes my jeep to stop or stall on the road sending me and my passengers to lounge forward as if i had hit an invisible wall at full force.

Jeep has total loss of power, control, and steering while driving. car will no start unless in park or neutral, losses all power electrical and steering once you let foot off of the accelerator. i almost ran into another vehicle while heading hope and was nearly rear ended at another intersection due to stalling and no control. all of this happened within hours of ed voyles jeep replacing the ignition switch p41 recall. super super dangerous...

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. while driving 10 mph, the power steering seized and the instrument panel lights illuminated. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 14v438000 (electrical system) and stated that the part needed for the repair was not available. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 62,000. parts distribution disconnect.

I was driving down the hwy and my vehicle turned off. i lost power steering breaks and was not able to properly maintain control of my vehicle in order to avoid an accident. this had happened twice before this time, and i looked to see that there was a recall on my jeep for an ingition switch and the the exact discription of what would happen if my car was effected fit my situation. i then called jeep and advised them of this and they said i neeeded to have it diagnoised by a jeep dealership. i had the vehicle towed at my expensense and rented a car at my expense. the dealership confirmed my assumption and in fact the issue i was experiencing is part of the recall. jeep now tells me they don't have the parts and they have not made a decision on whether it's neccessary to provide a replacement vehicle until they have a resolve. am i supposed to be without a vehicle or potentially drive mine with 3 children, and potentially loose power again causing a loss of control? what i am supposed to do from here?

Just as i was slowing down to 30 mph to enter a parking lot the entire dashboard lit up and then all lights faded and turned off. the ac turned off and the radio turned off. the car still continued driving but the power steering was gone, causing the car to shake and jolt mid turn. the brakes weren't working as they normally would resulting in a very dangerous situation had any other car been close to me at the time. i took it to my mechanic right away and he tested everything, including the alternator and the battery. everything was functioning at 100% capacity and he couldn't find a reason for the check engine light to be on. this has happened 3 more times. i am unable to drive the vehicle in fear that it will break down or my family or another driver.

My vechicle was recall ed over 2 years ago for steering wheel switch and i keep getting letters to come in for repais but they never have parts. my car is unsafe. i want it fixed. i've experienced the incident 5 times.

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the contact stated that while driving approximately 5 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to turn causing the contact to crash into a pole. the contact did not specified if a police report was filed or if any injuries were sustained. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic but was not diagnosed or repaired. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 14v438000 (electrical system) however, the part needed to do the repair was unavailable. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was unknown.

While driving the car shut off. no speed or power steering. this occurred on a busy road and a crash was avoided. i have called chrysler and was told the recall parts are still unavailable. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. while driving 15 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver. the contact also stated that the brake pedal was depressed and failed to respond. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the contact received a notification of nhtsa campaign number: 14v438000 (electrical system) and believed that the failure was related to the recall. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 84,000.

P41 / nhtsa 14v-438 engine shut off while driving. removed everything from key chain, and left enough space between knee and key. when car bounces, cannot control knee. happened more than 5 times past a month. called chrysler, have no estimated time for parts production. *tr

Can you tell me when chrysler will have parts for my vehicle that is on recall for ignition switch. i am still having problems with the vehicle cutting off while driving. i have the recall notification for some time now and waiting for them to notify me when i can have it repaired. i worry about the vehicle continuing to cut off at any time while driving and may cause an accident with the steering locking up. i enter the date above as today which is not the recall date only to complete this form. thank you [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

While driving the vehicle on a slippery road during a snowfall, my wife observed all of the indicator lights on the dashboard light up simultaneously. shortly thereafter, the engine shut off, causing a loss of power steering and consequently a loss of control of the vehicle on the slippery roadway. as a result, the vehicle slid into a highway maintenance marker along the shoulder of the road, causing minor damage to the license plate holder and bumper of the vehicle. our concern is that this incident is apparently due to a defective ignition switch, which is the subject of a current recall (14v-438) issued by the manufacturer on 9/3/14. however, the manufacturer has not provided a remedy for this defect, citing the unavailability of repair parts, and as of this morning the manufacturer has no idea as to when these repair parts will be available. in the meantime, the phenomenon of the dashboard indicators suddenly and spontaneously illuminating while driving continues to recur rather frequently, and we are afraid that a recurrence of the engine shutoff and loss of power steering and brake assist will also recur, perhaps at a time and location where a much more serious crash will result. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. while driving 30 mph, the power steering failed without warning. the specifics of the power steering failure were not available. the contact received nhtsa campaign number: 14v438000 (electrical system) but the recall remedy was not available. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 30,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the contact stated that while driving 35 mph, the engine stalled, the steering wheel became difficult to turn and the brakes failed to engage. the vehicle was taken to dealer. the technician diagnosed that the ignition switch needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact received a notification for nhtsa campaign number: 14v438000 (electrical system) and believed the failure was directly related to the recall. the contact stated that the part needed to remedy the vehicle was not available. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 84,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the contact stated that while driving at 5 mph, the gear shift failed. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician was unable to determine the failure. however the failure recurred. the contact also stated that the vehicle transmission failed. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 145,000. update 01/15/16 ma update 04/19/18*jb *cn

My jeep commander turned off, causing my brakes to fail along with steering and airbags to fail. i crashed into the back of someone towing a pontoon boat. the total cost of damage was over $7,000. my insurance had to cover it. this is because of the recall p41. i have called and complained several times about my dash lights flickering, and my jeep turning itself off. i was without my vehicle for 3 weeks while it was being repaired. chrysler needs to get this issue figured out! this could have been a much worse accident had i been on the interstate. *tr

In september of 2014 i recently bought a 2006 jeep commander. a few weeks after purchasing the vehicle i noticed the car was shutting off when i was at stop signs, red lights, and most seriously when i was driving. i was not sure as to why my car was doing this. i tried everything from a new battery and countless appointments at my mechanic. i was not informed of any type of recall on my car, until i did my own personal research. in may of 2015 i took my car to a chrysler, dodge, jeep and ram dealership to find out when i could order the part for the p-41 recall on my car. i was informed that the part was not available in the country and they were not sure of when it would arrive. i was told the car was "safe" to drive. i was given a few tips: sit far enough away from the steering wheel so my knees were not close to the key, have the car key only on a ring by itself, always wear my seat belt, and avoid having a front passenger. it was only a matter of 4 weeks until i was experiencing the issue again. i was driving on the highway with my boyfriend and one year old daughter going about 65mph when my car completely shut off, i lost power steering, brakes, and every single light turned on. i had to resort to pulling the e-brake which did not help slow my car down. this was the most serious and dangerous incident, luckily we did not get hurt, or hurt anyone else. as a result, i took my car to another jeep dealership and was advised the same information that the part was not able to be ordered and given the same tips. i requested a rental for the safety of myself and my daughter. it took me 2 weeks to finally receive a rental. i have had a rental for almost two weeks now and was told by the dealership, by pulling the e-brake it was going to cost me $1600 to fix. i do not feel as if i am responsible for the cost of the repair, considering this was caused by the p-41 recall.

2006 jeep commander traveling at highway speed 65mph ignition shuts off and loss of power steering. able to slow to breakdown lane and restart vehicle. this is the second time this has happened chrysler is no help. i have a 5 month old who was in the vehicle at the time. its been long enough they should have it figured out. acceptable time for an issue like this is not 6 months. *tr

I was driving; the dashboard lit up and the air bag sign said air bags disengaged. then the car shut off. i restarted it after several attempts. i want to know when are you going to get this problem fixed. i was fortunate in that i was driving slowly in town. but it has shut off a number of times. i keep only the key in the ignition and it has still done that. to me i think if i am driving on the interstate or some other high volume and high speed area and this occurs again causing an accident you will be the ones to blame.

Today not 10 minutes after filing my complaint i got in my car and while driving the car stalled after my knee barely touched the key fob. i was paying close attention since i had just read about the investigation. *tr

Everytime i drive my jeep it stalls and the wheel locks up (basically turns into manual steering) and my brakes lock up ( no brakes at all) and i had just bought this jeep a wk go from mcgee chevrolet in raynham ma. the first night i drove it home it stalled pulling in to the driveway. i called the dealership the next morning to tell them and they wouldn't take the jeep til the following wk to look at it they came up with every excuse in the world. when i brought the jeep in today they had me sign a deductible of 100 dollars but yet when i first test drove the jeep it i told them to fix it but all they did was cleared the codes (flashed the computer) now i have a rejection sticker on the vehicle and no car. *tr

On multiple occasions in the last 2-3 months the car has stalled out while driving at speeds over 60 miles an hour. everything including the lights etc... shutdown when it stalls. after pulling over the vehicle will restart fairly quickly. *tr

I received a safety recall notice from chrysler for my jeep commander stating that i may experience an unintended change in ignition switch position while driving, which could result in loss of engine power, power steering, and braking, and increases my risk of a crash. i have called chrysler group recall center 1-800-853-1403, option 6 countless times, unfortunately many times having to hang up after waiting 25 minutes to get through. i have also repeatedly called beyer/jeep/chrysler 973-644-3200 and they have been very short with me and tell me the same thing every time i call- they have no date of when the part will be in. when i drive on the highway, i am terrified of losing control of my car. i have seen on the news people that have been in accidents because of this ignition switch and heard that chrysler has a buyout program. i am interested in finding out about this program because i think that waiting over a year, and with no resolution in sight, is a bit ridiculous and i dont want to become a statistic. please advice me as to what my next step should be.

While driving on sunday july 6, 2014, my vehicle suddenly shut off and lost power steering. we were able to pull off and restart the vehicle. this happened a couple of times and then seemed to run normal. *tr

While driving and turning a left corner resulted in loss of engine power, power steering, and braking. this has happened on several occasions and we have stopped driving the family vehicle due to this safety issue which is not deemed safe to drive especially up and down hills....we had to purchase another vehicle since the recall fix is still not available and won't be for over 1 year! *tr

Driving north from detroit with my uncle, passing a semi on i 75 at about 70-75. the engine just quit, likesome turned the key off. got to the side of the road, put vec. in park started back up drove home. took jeep to al serra,s the 29 th got it back 6/2/14 found no reason why it shut down. june 15 th when driving on bristol road at 45 mph it quit again, took it back to al serra,s 2days later got it back, still couldn't find cause. *tr

Driving home from work yesterday, when my steering wheel suddenly locked and truck started dying, and i almost hit a guard rail . turned the engine completely off and tried to turn the engine back on, but my truck would not start. had the truck towed to the dealer that day 04/25/2014. received a call from the dealer on today's date 04/26/2014; truck needs a new tipm module. a new tipm module was just put in my truck at the same dealer a few days short of a year ago (04/27/2013). problem is so common with chrysler that the module is on back order (nationally). there is no recall for this issue and it is seriously dangerous! i have read other complaints in regards to the tipm module (lawsuits as well). does someone have to die before chrysler does something? i am now afraid to drive my vehicle after the new tipm module is put in (whenever that will be) or to have passengers ride in my vehicle. please please please help before someone is seriously injured or killed. i have no idea what i'll do to get back and forth to work because module is on back order and the dealer does not do loaners. *tr

My beloved jeep commander suddenly shut off while driving at 40mph. with no prior problems or warning signs the engine completely stalled- instantly i lost both power steering & brakes. needless to say i was terrified. after much confusion & hassle i was told to replace my key. (reason being the 'chip' inside was malfunctioning.) i replaced the $270 key which solved nothing. to my surprise, many commander owners experience this same problem with no help from jeep. not only do jeep dealerships ignore the potential recall warning on the commander, but they actually recommend expensive 'solutions' that do not even touch the known problem. it seems as though there are no solutions for this faulty system, given that no dealership can successfully stop the shutting off. there are way too many owners experiencing the same dangerous stall. i cannot in good conscience ignore the fact that this problem goes beyond inconvenience; this is potentially very dangerous and the jeep commander needs to be recalled. *tr

The vehicle randomly shuts off. the dash gauges flicker and/or go off for a brief time. if breaks are engaged at that time, abs stops. if headlights are on auto, they turn off. if turning a hard left or right (such as turning into a driveway, turning on to a street, parking) power steering stops working. if the lights are on but not on auto the lights stay on. the radio stays on. these symptoms would indicate that there is a problem with the ignition switch. when this issue occurs, it seems to stop by pushing on the key. this has happened multiple times. after visiting this page, a log will be created to record date, time, and speed. this is a huge safety issue. after much research many users of internet forums for jeeps, complain about this issue (reference urls can be provided). the nhtsa campaign number: 14v047000 sounds very similar in nature. could the nhtsa look in to the parts being the same? *tr

Often my whole electrical system will flash on and off and has since jan 2009. three times since march of last year vehicle has turned its self off while driving (complete steering loss), fortunately at low speed. also, in 2010 ( i have repair receipt) my transmission control module went out. i had to pay a $200 copay per request of jeep to have it replaced, after much argument. they said my particular 2006 jeep commander wasn't part of the recall, as was all other failing parts included on 2006 commander recalls, excepting ignition. still waiting on ignition fix, its been a year.

While driving the commander at various speeds everything suddenly turns off. acceleration is immediately decreased and all dashboard functions are gone. i have to shift to neutral and re-start the engine, all while still driving. this is very dangerous. i have had this car for 2 months. *tr

Was driving down road and lost power, car stalled. this has happened a total of 3 times with yesterday being the 3rd event and i was traveling about 55 mph with the last incident. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the contact stated that while driving 40 mph, the steering wheel became very difficult to maneuver and caused her to lose control of the vehicle. the contact mentioned that the vehicle veered off the roadway and crashed into several trees. a police report was not filed of the incident. the contact mentioned that the front passenger and a rear passenger were air lifted from the scene for treatment of severe injuries. the contact mentioned that both passengers had to undergo several surgeries to reconstruct the muscled in their legs which were damaged in the crash. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was destroyed and was not inspected to determine the cause of the failure. the failure and current mileage was 120,000.

I have just purchased this used 2006 jeep commander 1 week ago. the vehicle is in great condition, no previous accidents, no engine lights/error codes. on the 2nd day of owning the jeep i experienced my first stall, and since then 4 more stalls. there is no engine lights, error codes, etc. the vehicle seems to be 100% okay, however the vehicle has just shut off 4 times losing brakes, steering, lights, etc - whether i am moving or at a stop. at first i thought "i must have bought a lemon" but i have been reading through several forums and blogs that there are 100's if not 1,000's of people who are experiencing the same issue with their 5.7l hemi commander, and some of the blogs date back to 2006 when these vehicles were brand new with less than a thousand miles on them. one person actually suffered an accident due to this electrical issue - losing control of steering and brakes. because their is no engine codes or lights dealerships are not assessing the issue at all or are just throwing parts at it hoping it is fixed and charging the customer a boat load of money. several people have identified that the issue potentially resides in the pcm and the ignition coils, some say that the coils put of an em interference that is disrupting the pcm. regardless - chrysler needs to get this fixed so no one else gets hurt, or killed. *tr

Hello, my 2006 jeep commander started stalling out over a year ago and has stalled on me on and off various times at different speeds but usually at a higher rate of speed, which has been very scary. i have chosen not to drive the vehicle anymore and now it is sitting in my driveway and i am driving a 1991 honda because i cannot afford to buy a new car at this time. i just paid this jeep off and now i cannot drive the vehicle. the dealer fixed the one recall on the vehicle called the front control module and it ran fine for a couple of weeks and now once again the car stalled out while i was headed to a camping trip with my kids a couple months ago going 50 mph and almost caused an accident. i was almost hit by a semi and several cars were honking and trying to avoid my jeep. i lose all power steering and there are no notifications that the car will stall so it is very scary and dangerous for me and my children. i am so upset that i cannot drive the car and feel safe. i have contacted jeep and they have a recall for 2006 jeep commanders that covers up to january 2006 and my vehicle was made in march so they told me there is nothing they can do. the recall was for the pcm which my car has the same code on the diagnosis but now they are telling me to take it to the dealer and i have to pay for this. i really hope that this situation can be resolved by jeep stepping up and taking care of this issue for the safety of people. *tr

I purchased my 2006 jeep commander from city auto in memphis, tn on 9/14/11 and was told it was a one-owner vehicle originating from the state of pennsylvania. i noticed hesitation in the transmission and variances (rough - up and down) in the idling shortly after my purchase. i then started to get the "transmission/engine" light coming on. but it would go away almost as quick as it would come on. i then had my engine stall while driving full speed on the interstate. i lost all power! fortunately, i was able to get over to the shoulder safely! we immediately started doing some research on various forums, including jeep forum, on the "stalling issue" and "lights coming on intermittently". my husband took it to our local autozone and they hooked it up to their coding scanner machine. it gave us the code to change the map sensor needed to be changed. my husband changed this out last summer (2013). it helped for a little bit. :( then began having the same issues, stalling out while driving, check engine light coming on/off and rough idling. husband went back and had them hook up to coding machine and this time was given the code for o2 sensor, which he purchased and changed out. now it's worse than ever! it won't even stay idled. it stalls almost immediately! i have to keep my foot on the gas (and brake when needed) all the time! if i let it go below 1000rpms it dies! we took it to a mechanic & was told the pcm was bad. but he told us that there were recalls that may fix the issue. so we took it to a dealership who performed the recall but unfortunately it did not fix the problems. this is a very expensive "fix" to a problem that appears to have never have been resolved properly by the manufacturer!! this needs to be addressed by the manufacturer as it is a major driving & safety hazard! *tr

I was driving down the hwy at 60 mph. my jeep suddenly slowed down without me pushing the brake. i pulled over as much as possible. the power steering went out as well. it would not start back up. *tr

I purchased the commander in september 2012. it ran great for a few months and then it started to stall. i replaced the maps sensor and tps sensor and it's still stalling. the stalling is at random and has happened many time while i was on the highway going 65+. that's exteremly dangerous and this issue should have been resolved by now. doing research online i know see that there is thousands of people with this very same issue and no one has successfully resolved it. there is an obvious defect with this jeep and chrysler needs to be held accountable. i blame myself for not doing any proper research before purchasing. i will never buy another chrysler product again.

I bought this car from a used dealership i have only owned this vehicle for about 3 months. have been having trouble for the last month and a half. and it all began on the interstate. i was traveling on the interstate doing about 75 and it just shut off in the middle of a cluster of cars and i had to go over 2 lanes to get to the shoulder. i lost steering and brakes within 10 seconds. one of the most scariest rides ever. i am now afraid to travel on the interstate with this vehicle. since this has happened it has shut off an additional 5 times i took it to the dealership cause the engine light was on and they said it was a map sensor, i have replaced this twice already. now it doesn't idle right and looses power in between 30 and 35 mph. and the engine light has once again came on. haven't had it checked yet cause it is a saturday night guess i will have to take it somewhere on monday. *tr

I was slowing down to make a right hand turn and the car shut off couldn't get it started had to have it towed and had to have ignition switch and assy. replaced. *tr

Approx 2 miles from work - making a right hand turn at a light. hazards on - taking precaution... car behind me. once i make the turn my car completely shuts off again. no brakes not steering - nothing... my car just happened to coast to the right as it is.... car behind missed me by an inch of slamming into me. waited a good 1/2 hour - my husband came and drove it the rest of the way to the work parking lot. i called jeep in lugoff sc and like every other dealership out there - they have no memory of hearing of any 2006 - 2007 jeep commander problems. i have called chyrsler care 8009921997 - dealerships... they all make me out to be crazy. i am going to report them to the bbb as well. i have 3 children - 9,8, and 20 mths old. chrysler must be waiting for someone to get killed.... i normally take the hwy to work - but today for some reason i decided to head to work on a back road. .... i can not believe with all the issues and complaints i have read about this same problem - that it is even legal to sell this car used,... *tr

Jeep commander 2006 completely shut down, steering locked up and the brakes locked up, while going in motion. could have been in a fatal accident. happened several times before reaching destination. dealer stated that the control module needed to be replaced. *tr

This has happened twice, i was driving home from work at 55mph with my new born child, and the engine shut off, the electirc shut off and the power sterring quit. the car behind me almost smashed into me. the jeep came to a stop and then i turned the key and it turned back on. please help me! *tr

While driving, i have a total loss of interior electrical. all systems go off although the vehicle continues running. this affects the steering as well as braking. there is nothing consistent about the problem. it has been taken to multiple dealers and they can find no issue. i've even taken in a video recording of the situation.
