Problems with 2016 Jeep Cherokee UNKNOWN OR OTHER

On average, the 2016 Jeep Cherokee starts to “feel” problems with the UNKNOWN OR OTHER and its various aspects after 38 558 miles.

Recently reported UNKNOWN OR OTHER problems on 2016 Jeep Cherokee

When i first bought my vehicle at the end of 2016 brand new a few months after that the service shifter light came on and all the lights appeared on my shifter. i took it back after a few months and they change the part on it which is seem to work the light didn't come on for a while. but then all of a sudden it comes back on so i knew something else was wrong. now my transmission light has come on and the car does multiple things for example falling completely dead while driving. also the car jerks when accelerating especially on highways. it even got to the point when after i was going about 50 to 60 miles per hour when i came to a complete stop the car would no longer accelerate there after. this is becoming a serious safety issue and life-threatening to myself and others on the road. i am scared to drive the vehicle not knowing and any given time when something is going to happen.

Shifter service error message appeared in two occasions within the span of a month. first encounter, was a few days after taking the car off the dealership lot. i was entering the drive away and all of sudden, shifter service error message appeared and all the gear indicators flashed bright red. after the dealership,, i probably put less that 10 miles on it at this point. turned off the vehicle and restarted the ignition. put it in drive, this time while stationary and it appeared again. i didn't take a photo the first time, as i assumed it was a fluke. didn't happen anymore after that till today, may 17th. i started up the ignition and headed on my way off, within 5 mins of my ride, i heard a beep. looked at the dash and saw the service shifter message again so i drove off into a parking lot to check out the issue. i stopped and went into park. the red indicators were still apparent. i turned off the vehicle 5x and repeated turning on the ignition, put it in drive, service shifter error appears and going into park and turning off the vehicle all while stationary in the parking lot. after the 6th time, i took it slow and it didn't appear. since the first occurrence, i probably have only driven the jeep less than 100 miles.

My service shifter pops up and i have had it switch and or serviced over 5 times

Service shifter light shifter stuck

Service shifter light came on. no apparent reason.

Service shifter error on dash board. all lights on gear shifter come on at once p,r, n,d. it only comes on when driving and doesn't go off until the car is turned off. it isn't daily but it's still scary.

I bought it used and it had 1 recall that was not disclosed and now the service shifter light keeps coming on. i have read 100s of others have this problem with little to no permanent resolution.

Service shifter light came on at 56,000 miles when i tried to put my car in reverse. all the lights for the shifter came on and the car didn't want to go into the right gear. this has now happened 3 times, not all consecutive.

Every time i'm driving my car and i approach a stop sign, a little or need to stop the vehicle turns off. the car does not turn on after 20 to 30 mins. i have taken it to various mechanics and no one can tell me what it is. oil change and even radiator was changed. a mechanic told me that the transmission lanes needed to be changed. i am hoping that is it beacuse i am terrified of driving my vehicle. a vehicle i was excited to buy. it is just a waste of money and time. i should be enjoying this vehicle.

Turning at a stop light on a busy road, an alert came up onto my dash that read to shift, car must be in park, however nothing touched my shifter. my car then shut down completely, no time to pull over or get off the road. the power was still on but the engine had shut off. i braked to re start and it sputtered, battery light came on and so did engine light. tried starting again and after a few sputters, car came on and i was able to get off of busy road. car has done this 3 times total now, every time the same. nothing seems wrong while driving, no error alerts or anything.

Jeep cherokee 2016 "service shifter" light comes on. i've seen a lot of people already post about their cherokees saying the same thing as well. called a mechanic shop they never heard of it and recommended me calling the dealer. so i recently took it in to have it serviced. we'll see what happens. it comes on when i start the car or sometimes it comes on while in motion.

The wiring harness needs replaced fir shifter , see attached pic . faulty wiring is causing service shifter light to come on.

Has been back to the dealer 4 times in one year for replacement of spark plugs and ignition coil. car runs rough and shakes. 53000 miles, have had it since it was brand new. feel unsafe driving in it.

While the jeep is in motion, the "service shifter" message becomes displayed on my screen, as well as all prindl lights glowing red. this has happened shifting the car into any gear, and has happened while turning the car as well as driving straight. it has also happened while street driving and highway driving. if you put the car in park, turn the car off, and turn it back on, the car does not immediately show the light, but has been happening more frequently since the first time it displayed the message (about 6 months ago). the jeep has 60,000 miles on it, and the first time it displayed the message the jeep had 50,000 miles on it.

The service shifter message displays on the screen and you can't tell if the the is in dprn becuase all the lights are red. the car sometimes will not shift out of gear. or jerks when it finally does. this care hesitates while in motion and as well as when stationary and trying to move. this is very dangerous. i have taken this vehicle to the dealer who stated that the recall they had was only for a software update with the shifter but this issue should also be a recall with them covering the repairs. i have less than 50k miles there is no reason why i should have to cover the expense of replacing the shifter assembly becuase the shifter is not covered under the warranty they sell you.

While driving at regular speed my car has stopped running. i was able to maneuver to the side & wait several minutes before it restarted. my heat has stopped working - i took it to be looked at & was told the "harness" is corroded. my car has $43k miles - how can this be already? *dt *dt*jb

Service shifter came on in my jeep and would not drive/shift going down the interstate in a lot of traffic. my family could have been killed! cars were swerving around me, blowing their horns, and i couldn't even step on the gas to try to get off the road on to the shoulder. about 30 minutes before that happened my 16 year old daughter was driving. this needs to be addressed immediately before someone gets killed!!!

Our 2016 jeep cherokee (latitude 4wd) has been stalling after a cold start. the battery indicator flashes and then registers a message to place the car in p to shift into gear. i have been able to restart the car after waiting 30-60 sec, sometimes while in traffic. the vehicle was at the dealership on 1/14/19 and i was told that there wasn't any oil on the dipstick. the engine is possibly burning oil but there are no indicators or status updates when the system is checked. i was told by the dealership that they are aware of an engine issue with the 2016 jeep cherokee. an oil consumption test is needed before the engine can be replaced (if needed). oil consumption test initiated 1/14/19. chrysler/jeep is aware of this issue and has not issued a safety recall. negligence by chrysler for not responding to this significant defect and safety issue.

About a month ago, my 2016 jeep started to stall as i was driving the vehicle. the steering wheel locks and the battery sign flashes, then the car tells me to place the car in park. i shut the car off, wait about two minutes then restart the car. sometimes i will make it to my destination, sometimes it stalls on me again. it's happened too many times, and i scared to drive the car anymore. it has been in a shop for three weeks now, and there is nothing that they can find wrong with the vehicle. they hook it up to a machine, but no error messages are reported to them. *dt*jb

The vehicle is burning oil between changes, it shuts off in the middle of driving on a road because it has no oil. no warning messages or lights pop up. i have almost been hit by other cars twice (with a child in the backseat) because the car shuts down and there is no oil in the car. my screen says i have over 50% remaining until the next oil change! i was driving down the road, and the vehicle shut off and i was almost hit by other cars!

My vehicle stalls while driving; on the expressway, after a car wash, in the school parking lot. this is very dangerous!! it happened 3 times during rush hour traffic on a friday night. online complaints are plentiful...this needs to be addressed, someone is going to be seriously hurt!! currently at the shop, they cannot figure out what the issue is. this has happened on numerous occasions.

I saw on credit karma my vehicle has several recalls

At 61,000 miles my jeep started having a strong fuel smell in the cabin after coming to a stop with the auto-start dis-engaged. reading online, many people on the forums have similar issues with cherokees since the early 2000's with no known malfunction to fix. the exhaust smell has caused headaches in the last week.

I have a 2016 jeep cherokee limited. when i am driving the vehicle and slow down such as to make a turn or stop at a redlight, the engine dies out. this has happened multiple times. i had a diagnostic test done on it, and the test indicated the throttle body needed cleaning or the air filter was dirty. i had the throttle body cleaned and the air filter replaced with a new one. the vehicle is still doing the same thing. the is a big safety concern in that the vehicle has stalled while i was in an intersection making a turn. i am concerned that i will get hit by on coming traffic, if this continues to happen. i do not have another vehicle to drive nor is public transportation available. jeep needs to look into this safety issue before someone is seriously injured or killed.

While driving in my neighborhood, my 2016 jeep cherokee completely shut off. it would not start so i had to push it off the road. i've read similar complaints about this issue.

The rear hatch would not close the vehicle was parked had have vehicle towed the service advisor stated he had no problem closing the hatch picked up vehicle two weeks later same problem

Over the last 2 weeks, while driving my jeep has lost power. no warning light or anything, my jeep just dies. it will say "shift into p, then select gear" after i have lost power. my lights/radio/bluetooth all still work, but i can not break nor accelerate nor steer. i was nearly t-boned this am, and nearly rear ended last week.

After i start the car up in the morning or after it has sat for awhile, it will run for about 5 minutes and then the engine will completely die, the battery light comes on and the screen says "shift to p then desired gear". when it does this, i lose throttle power, breaks and steering. i have to put the car in park and try to turn it off, when i try and turn it off it cranks like it is trying to start and won't. after i get the car turned off and go to turn it back on, it cranks really hard for about 45 seconds before starting. then it smells like something is burning, it will do this 4-5 times before it starts running ok. after it dies, the transmisson feels like it is jumping/jerking and the car will randomly ding like it does when the windshield wiper fluid is low but nothing shows up on the screen or in the messages. it has died in the middle of an intersection, with the sterring locking up and the throttle losing power, this could have caused a major accident.

Vehicle randomly gets hot as if the ac stopped blowing cool air but then works normally. does this frequently but randomly for only a couple of seconds at a time.

Stalling while driving, mostly when making a turn or as wheel is turned; has almost caused multiple severe accidents to occur. has happened while driving on the highway, street, and pulling out of a parking spot on several occasions. system stalls and then a message appears 'shift to p'. having to quickly stop in incoming traffic, put into park, shut off engine and restart to work. when making smaller turns the system dings as if a message alert will appear but nothing shows.

The first day i had the car i took it back complaining of some kind of electrical problem. they said they found nothing wrong. in august of this year i took a road trip during the trip a smell the scent of raid over powered the car and is still present in the car today so bad am afraid to drive the car. i was on the highway eight hours.on that trip and i felt as if i was gonna pass out. didn't know what to do the smell is still in the car. i only drive to the store and back now.

2016 jeep cherokee latitude 4x4 (25k miles) will stall or lose power while driving. happened several times in past few months. noticed first when had trouble starting in the morning a few times (after a recent oil change). while driving, jeep latitude 4x4 will jump into gear while slowing jolting the car forward, temporarily lose power (rpm drop, and mph drop), or completely lose power while driving (happened on both city and highway). complete loss of power happened several times while turning, coming around turn, indicator will ding then suddenly steering stiffens, no power from gas pedal, and car slows to stop. once stopped, message screen displays 'shift car to p then to desired gear' i then have to shift car to park and restart (sometimes taking 3 or 4 attempts). this has also happened while attempting to merge onto highway (coming around bend of on ramp) luckily there was a large shoulder and little traffic to pull over safely. this poses an immediate risk of safety of not only myself, but passengers and other vehicles. if this were to happen at a busy intersection, highway, or dangerous road conditions (low visibility, slick surface, etc) and accident will occur. i no longer feel safe driving this vehicle.

Keep getting service shifter and need to stop vehicle and shut off and start up again. sometime vehicle will run good for a couple of days, other times get 5 minutes down the road and it returns. went on a long road trip and have to pull over a number of times on a very busy interstate. i brought it into the shop three (3) times with the same issue (late date 8/2/18), last time i was told it would be $380.00 to replace a harness for some kind of cable and they needed to order parts. still waiting for the call from the shop with a date to replace the harness.

The shift reports service shifter all the lights turn on, has not shifted on us

The panoramic sunroof exploded while driving down the highway, out of no where. my sunroof was not busted my an external force. my sunroof has very think glass. the whole in the glass in dead set in the middle. after doing some research online this has happened to several other buyers. it was 88 degrees out that day. i have driven my car in hotter conditions.

My jeep has been and looked at for shaking in the front end when getting to a certain speed. i have found out after going to get a wheel alignment and being told it may be my tires and having them changed and then told it may be the balance of the tires and having that checked the issue is still present. after looking into this issue more and talking to other jeep owners about this they said it is what is called the jeep shakes. and according to looking this issue up this is present on many jeep years and for me as a car owner there is no recall to fix this issue. the cost of fixing this issue can range from $900 to 1500 dollars depending on where it is taken. the jeep when driving and reaching 55 plus mph and it starts to shake and if able to get to 65 mph the shaking ceases.

While at a stop light, my jeep completely shut off on me and we had to start it back up and it started back up. however this has happened many times before and think they should recall this considering how many of the same complaints i am seeing on this. i have 2 kids in my car at all times and fear it doing this while driving as well. i took it to jeep and they checked it out but now it just feels hesitant while driving. scares me to death

I started my car and service shifter message popped up and all the light on the shifter were red, shur car off and started car again and was fine for a few days and then same message popped up. was reading to see if other people have the same issue and they do and there was a recall on a year or two early of my car.

Faulty engine with excessive oil consumption. engine piston blown at 54k, on brand new 2016 jeep cherokee, and consequently repaired under manufacturer warranty. fca and dealership difficult to work with and attempted everything to avoid the repair until i obtained legal counsel. the vehicle still randomly shuts off while being operated which makes it a danger to all. i have also experienced issues with the transmission, which the dealership said stemmed from the electrical system. the vehicle would get "stuck" in a particular and cause the vehicle to "jump" while attempting to idle down. lastly, the service shifter light has come on. the light comes on while the vehicle is in motion and does not appear to effect the operation of the vehicle. nevertheless, this is another problem added to the engine and transmission issues. this vehicle is trash and needs to be completely recalled. shame on fca for selling this vehicle with a ton of defects. shame on any authority that does not investigate the claims regarding this vehicle, or does it take a catastrophic event to gather your attention.

While driving the car on 2 separate occasions, the car died while in motion. the first time, i was leaving church and made a left turn. the car stalled and i was able to move out of the way of traffic onto the shoulder of the road. i put the vehicle in park and started it up a couple of times and was able to go. the second time (today), i turned into a parking lot and it just killed. i put the vehicle in park and then started the car again and moved on. fortunately, both times, i was able to safely address this. who knows what will happen the next time? this first happened the 4th sunday in may of 2018 and the second time, june 10, 2018.

My car has a "service shifter " message popped up at 34461 mileage going 65 mph on the highway just straight no turning no nothing. the shifter lights are all lite up as weel and i cannot see the middle screen that shows my mph in big letters. i called jeep stating not to worry about it. turned car off and turned back on and no message second time was at 36044 miles going 15 mph through a parking lot and the shifter is all lite up and "service shifter" message came back on again . turned car off after parking and turned back on after a few hours and was not on.

The car would stall in the middle of the road. this happened before, i took it to the dealership, they told me it was due to low/dirty oil level, they did the oil change and it was fine for a while. this morning the car stalled in the middle of the road, i have about 5,000 miles on the car since last maintenance, but when i checked the oil change indicator, it showed that i still have about 36%.

The check engine light is on once in two weeks. my local dealer in san diego (rancho chrysler jeep dodge) said that there is a problem with engine gas valve. they said it was leaking. each time this is the issue. this is my 4th time going to the dealer. i strongly believe that its very risky for passengers to drive such cars with leaks. i request nhtsa team to please review all jeep cherokee models as they need re-calls and its unsafe for public to drive such leaky vehicles. i was very afraid when i was turning on highway and my car started noise as if something is bursting, it was very frightening moment.

Oil does not last during oil changes, i have to add oil. there is not a leak or any issue, it is just burning way too fast. my jeep was cutting off right after i would start driving (usually right after a turn) and i had no idea why until i noticed oil was extra low. so now i just make sure to keep it full between changes. definitely feel like this is a nuisance.

I've owned this vehicle for three weeks. i parked my cherokee outside my office at work, shut it off as normal, and came back out a few hours later to run some errands. i received a message that stated 'no fob detected'. i tried the auto start, which worked, the lock and unlock from the key fob worked, but when i tried to start the vehicle the only message received was 'no fob detected'. i called jeep and they tried to walk me through a reset, which did not work. aaa came out to try to assist. they disconnected the battery, tried jumping the vehicle, and performed the reset as well. none of this worked. i had to have it towed to the dealership and am still waiting on diagnostics to tell me what was wrong with it and how much it will cost to fix.

Service shifter light comes on and off since reaching 31000 miles on the vehicle.

Please help me with my potentially deadly problem? my 2016 cherokee dies while i'm driving (city & highway ["dinged" but didn't die-i won't drive it on the highway]). it is frightening and potentially deadly. there is no pattern to when or why this happens. it happens repeatedly and the dealership cannot identify nor correct the problem. the computer doesn't register any codes and doesn't recognize that the vehicle has died. nothing shows on the dashboard either when this happens. there is a "ding" and the car dies. i have been reading (online) many other identical accounts of this problem with others who won the 2015 & 2016 cherokee models. my car is, yet again, at the dealership. please help me? this is a potentially deadly situation. i am afraid to drive this vehicle. and, others are experiencing exactly the same thing. thank you!

Jeep wobble. i was towing my vehicle behind my motor home. i had traveled approximately 300 miles without problems. near the end of my trip i made a right turn. just after making the turn i felt a violent shaking. the incident occurred at low speed estimated to be 20 to 25 mile per hour. i looked into the rear camera and was able to see the vehicle oscillating from side to side.i immediately slowed to a stop to get the shaking to stop. since i was blocking traffic i continued on to a safe place. after proceeding about a mile to my destination, i had no further issues. i have contacted jeep concerning the issue. they stated that it was on me to buy a wiring kit to correct the problem. when i purchased the vehicle on december 31, 2017, i told the dealer that i was in the market for a vehicle for towing. they did not have one with the equipment necessary for towing in stock but stated they could get one from louisville ky. i agreed to have get it. in short i purchase a vehicle that the dealership said was ready for towing. at now time during the sales process or after was i ever notified a a wiring package requirement. i just learned of it in recent days when i had it in the shop. i feel that chrysler should pay for the fix and not me as the consumer based on their representation that the vehicle was ready for towing.

Since my previous complaint, 11048717 i was denied a buy back by fca, llc via first class mail stating i was not eligible under ga lemon law regardless of it being out of service more than 30 days. since this letter the vehicle has died 3 times while in motion and continues to skip along with a decrease in rpms while idling (observed my dealership service). i also had smoke and a strong odor coming from the left front side of the vehicle with no reason as to why. this car is dangerous and i cannot believe there has not been a total recall since it is shutting off while driving for so many people.

I was driving on a highway and i heard an audible alert while "service transmission" lit on the display and the check engine light came on. i pulled into the right lane to get off the next exit, and the car started shaking lightly. as i was on the exit ramp, my gas pedal wouldn't do anything. seems like it just stopped working. i glided to a stop and was able to safely make some phone calls. there was a tech service bulletin "to reprogram transmission control module with updated software". i feel this is a very big safety issue and it should be a recall, not just a tech service bulletin. the dealer was excellent in handling this situation, but i'd like to see this problem turn into a recall before someone gets seriously injured. the trouble code they found is "p088700 transmission control circuit". thank you.
