Problems with 2014 Jeep Cherokee ENGINE

On average, the 2014 Jeep Cherokee starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 40 308 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2014 Jeep Cherokee

Car stalled 6x with my 4 and 5 year olds in the vehicle. smoke billows out of back of car. ignition coil, spark plugs, filter and oil replaced. 9/2/14 car shifting incorrectly. computer system reset due to transmission issues. customer told to bring back after drives 500 miles for oil consumption test. 9/29/14 oil consumption test failed. pvc intake valve replaced. dealer to drive car 250 miles and test oil consumption again. as of 10/3, no resolution. customer has requested replacement from manufacturer. not approved as of yet. *tr

Vehicle was having severe issues shifting gears. transmission warning light came on, less than a mile later the malfunction indicator light came on. vehicle then lost 4wd capability. vehicle seemed to stall out and max out at 20 mph. car stopped a few blocks from my house while in a turning lane. turned the car off and turned it back on, was able to barely make it home. luckily, it was late night and no traffic. could've cause a big accident. the vehicle sits here at the house right now because it will not run. calling the dealership when they open tomorrow to try and find a resolution. *tr

I was driving with my two young children through town. we were turning left on a busy city street when my vehicle would not accelerate and was only able to creep through the intersection at less than 5 mph. we were nearly t-boned on the side where my 4 yr old child was seated. the service transmission message light came on and car became inoperable! it had to be towed to the dealership. dealership had to completely replace transmission. they outright lied and denied any knowledge of transmission issues with this vehicle. in conjunction, they could and did not answer any questions regarding the new transmission and if it was any different than the one that failed. to top it off my car was returned to me with several new scratches, an extra part left under the hood, and a broken hood latch. i drove the vehicle home on a highway in this condition and thank goodness the hood did not fly open. this issue with the transmission is deadly! someone will be seriously hurt or killed because of this defect! please do not purchase this car. *tr

Driving at 70 miles per hour, vehicle suddenly stop accelerate, all lights came on dash, read service transmission. *tr

When you step on the accelerator from 0mph the car stutters and shakes for a few mph until you get to about 15-20mph and then it drives like normal. *tr

I went to shift vehicle into drive, vehicle would not shift into any gear. turned the vehicle on and off three times, on the third attempt i managed to get in to shift into drive. vehicles transmission service and check engine lights came on stating "service transmission start from park with vehicle at zero speed." when i had shifted through to drive to move the vehicle the transmission made a clunking sound like it had fallen out of the jeep. i drove it 3 miles to my house only going 30 mph. when i got home i attempted to put the vehicle into park and the transmission would not move past neutral. i attempted to remove key 4-5 times and because of this the dash lights had stayed on. i disconnected the battery and had the vehicle towed to the dealership the next day. *tr

I have had numerous problems (5 total) with my 2014 jeep cherokee limited hard shifting into lower gears. the vehicle jerks and bucks randomly and has nearly caused me to have numerous accidents. the vehicle features the zf-designed nine-speed automatic transmission that has known issues with rough shifting. the recall update was performed in early may yet the problem persists. the vehicle randomly pulls forward, normally in stop and go traffic, and is completely unpredictable. chrysler has a total of 5 work orders in their system and is asking me for a 6th time to bring the car in for repairs. each "repair" trip results in a software update to the transmission that ban aids the problem for about a week and then we are right back to square one. i'm very frustrated and am requesting that the vehicle be bought back by chrysler and i be reimbursed for all car payments made in the last year. the vehicle falls under maryland lemon law requirements in that , it has less than 18k miles and is under 24 months old and was purchased new. i am requesting to open a case with national highway traffic safety administration to assist me with this issue. i have an open case number with chrysler of 26719430. any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

I am a nurse and travel for a living. on my way home from assignment in wv. just outside a bowling green on i65. my car jerked then lost all power. engine light, service transmission light and battery lights all came on. i was going 70 miles an hour. i had no acceleration. i coasted to the shoulder, across 3 lanes of interstate. i attempted jeeps emergency number but got the unable to connect voice mail, after 5 minutes my car restarted. i remained on right side of road. 65 miles later and 15 miles from nashville the car jerked and i lost the ability to accelerate once again. i pulled over and the car restarted. i am now in a hotel for the third night and unable to get home. i took my car to jeep this morning to be serviced. i was told a computer malfunction caused the problem. the dealer did not offer to pay for rental car, hotel ect. the new part is supposed to be here tuesday. no i was not killed or involved in a crash however, i can think of several scenarios where i easily could have been in a horrible crash. what if the new module is also bad i asked. it's like my new laptop i was told. sometimes they just break. *tr

The transmission will not downshift from third gear unless the vehicle comes to a complete stop. when trying to accelerate into traffic during city driving this is very dangerous because the vehicle is unresponsive and will not accelerate. also the vehicle continues to have harsh shifts from first to second gear and from second to third gear even after all recalls have been performed.

When decelerating for a speed zone, the transmission downshifted from 5th to 4th, the rpms went up approximately 1000 and the car accelerated. the 'unintended' acceleration characteristic is also evident on downhill driving in the mountainous terrain. this occurs or a frequent basis and was evident prior to, and after, a transmission/tcm replacement. my wife no longer feels safe driving this vehicle and has gone back to using her subaru for commuting. there are obvious issues with the engine/transmission control firmware/hardware which need to be addressed. *tr

When accelerating from a stop, between 13-20 mph just before the transmission shifts into the next gear the whole vehicle shimmies or wobbles for a few seconds. it happens every time, whether under hard or soft acceleration. it is also more noticeable when turning right. the passenger is even able to feel the shimmy, so it does not only transfer through the pedals or steering wheel. axles have been replaced, software has been updated, but at this point in time there is no known fix for the vehicle. *tr

On occaision when accelerating the car seems to be in limbo, not accelerating and losing speed slightly. *tr

Faulty transmission. *tr

While slowing/breaking/decelerating from any speed that has cause vehicle to be in gear 5+, around 35-25mph, transmission will downshift from 5-4 and vehicle will surge. vehicle will not decelerate, transmission remains in gear 4 and rpm remains 2k. excessive pressure is required on brake to slow vehicle. if break is not applied, vehicle will not slow down and will maintain 25mph for extended period of time. measured distance i obtained was 0.4 mile before engine rpm began to decrease below 2k and vehicle began to slow without brake pressure. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 jeep cherokee. while driving approximately 35 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the failure occurred on several occasions. the vehicle was towed to the dealer for diagnostic testing, but the cause of the failure was undetermined. the vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 12,800. updated 2/9/15*cn

Sorry i'm not sure why it does this... when i'm driving sometimes and i take my foot off the gas to slow down.. for some reason my car on it own.. speeds up.. i watch the rpm and there is a big jump in rev.. i'm not sure what that is.. i actually lurch forward. i'm scared that one day it's going to hit a person or go through the wall of my garage! the second thing is my light switch i am not sure why but twice it's pushed into my dash board .. .the first time it happened i was stuck at dusk .. couldn't drive.. my normal dealership in north seattle called the dwayne lane in everett and they told my dealership that they won't do warranty work.. so my dealership had to send out a guy from service and drive all the way to everett to do a temporary fix... the third complaint .. now at 9500 miles there's a leak in my engine coolant.. and it left me stranded in everett and had to be towed.. by the way tried to go to the everett dealership dwayne lane and again they wouldn't help me this time.. i had no ride home and they wouldn't provide a rental car.. even though i paid for a very expensive extended warranty. i had the car towed the next day to marysville jeep dealership and they are wonderful! don't buy from dwayne lane in everett!!!! the service department is the worst in the country. i've heard many horror stories from clients.. to tow truck drivers .. to other dealers. *tr

The first issue arose as the vehicle was being backed out of a driveway. while still in motion, the vehicle produced an audible and visual collision alert with no obstructions present. the vehicle stopped suddenly, partially in the roadway, shifted to neutral and shut the motor off. it was necessary to cycle the vehicle through stop-accessory-run and back to accessory before the vehicle could be placed in park. once in park, the information center (evic) read "battery voltage low". after returning to the stop position the vehicle was restarted and the malfunction indicator (mil) remained illuminated. scrolling to the battery status on the evic showed a reading of 13.9v, within a normal range. the vehicle was placed in drive and operated properly, except for the mil for 24-hours with multiple starts and stops. the following day, upon starting the vehicle, again an audible and visual alarm sounded and the vehicle shut down completely, with the evic reading 4-wheel drive unavailable. it then changed to adaptive cruise unavailable, then forward collision warning unavailable. an indicator light with an exclamation mark stated that service was required. again, the vehicle was cycled through the stop-accessory-run sequence without the break depressed to re-set the electrical sequencing. the vehicle was restarted and only the mil remained illuminated. the vehicle was then able to be put in gear and returned to service. both occurrences took in excess of one minute to return the vehicle to operational, and had they happened in an active traffic area, would have left the vehicle a sitting duck for oncoming vehicles. the dealership has been notified and an appointment scheduled to address the issues. no repairs completed to date; owner advised that the vehicle is still able to be driven, but to keep the phone number to roadside assistance handy. *tr

When quickly accelerating from a complete stop (such as pressing the gas pedal all the way down), my 2014 jeep cherokee(3.2l w/ active drive i) significantly shakes from left-to-right similar to where a wheel would be out of balance. this seems to affect performance as well, where the vehicle lags to pick up speed right away, which is concerning when needing to quickly cross expressway intersections. *tr

Subject: 2014 jeep cherokee limited, v-6 engine/9 speed transmission, purchased 2/25/14. current mileage: 3940 miles. this subject automobile is experiencing problems that appear to be associated with the transmission and throttle control. the problems are described as: 1.a subtle chatter in the transmission when accelerating similar to clutch chatter. this occurs in lower gears. this behavior is worse when turning hard left/right when transmission is under an acceleration load. 2.the transmission shifting (up and down shift) can be delayed and very abrupt. in going up a hill, the throttle response is delayed with a following abrupt, head jerking downshift. similar abrupt shifts when upshifting 3.throttle response can be abrupt (surges forward) at light throttle application. this in itself is a safety issue when behind a car at a stop. as the cars in front move forward, a slight throttle response causes the car to lurch forward and accelerate faster than the car in front. this happened to me several times. fortunately, i was far enough behind to not hit the car in front. this issue was brought to the attention of the dealer 6/26/14. dealer stated "could not duplicate concern." this complaint is consistent with other complaints for this issue and automobile. judging by the number of similar complaints, it is strongly suggested that nhtsa look into this matter before there are accidents and/or injuries. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 jeep cherokee. while driving 15 mph, the vehicle wobbled during acceleration, as if the engine were unstable. the dealer stated that the tires needed to be aligned and the tire pressure needed to be checked. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was not notified. the approximate failure mileage was 250. updated 10/22/2014*lj updated 4/2/2015 *js

At 30-40mph with 2rmp my i would hear a very loud whistling noise. one day later my car would start kicking back when on the go. two days later, my jeep cherokee would not move at all. i could not put it in drive, park or any other gear. the check engine light came on. few seconds later the on information board said, "transmission problem." i had to call a tow truck to take it back to the dealership. *js

This exact scenario happened 4 times between 6/5/14-9/16/14. -- i was driving about 40 mph on the way to work. all of a sudden my car made a chime sound (as if a door was opened) and my car started slowing down, as if i took my foot off the gas. my dash had many lights come on (pretty much all of the sensor lights) and it said "service park break" and "service transmission" my check engine light was on as well. i can assure you my park break was not on! i coasted to the side of the road since pressing on the gas was not helping me move forward. my car never actually shut off on it's own, it just lost power, as if it was in neutral. i shut off the engine, let it sit a minute and started it up again. the same lights were on and it said service transmission. i put the car in drive and heard a clunking sound. the "d" in the shifter was also blinking. i shut the car off again and let it sit a little longer. i tried it again and when i put it in drive there was no clunking sound but when i took my foot off the break i started to roll backwards as if i was in neutral. i live in a rural area so all of this was occurring on a 2 lane road with little to no shoulder at 7:15am, so the traffic was at its heaviest. it was very scary because i had no warning and neither did the cars behind me. my car literally just started to slow out of no where. i was almost rear ended twice because of this. i then decided to have it towed to the dealer. the only difference that happened with the other 3 times, is that i waited long enough for the car to engage once i put it in drive. so i was able to drive myself to the dealer those times. i plan on taking this to jeep/chrysler as well. *tr

Was driving on a 2 lane highway and the jeep lost power, i pulled over to the shoulder and when i reached a complete stop the jeep shutoff. i could not get it the restart. after waiting 10 minutes i finally got the jeep restarted. when it started it released a huge cloud of white smoke from the exhaust pipes. this is the 4th time this has happened. *tr

Check engine light came on and vehicle was running rough. problem went away but light remained on. called dealer and we agreed to drive it to see if it acted up again. light went out two days later. at 734 miles i was turning a corner and vehicle acted like it wanted to stall. later that day turned another corner and vehicle stalled. i was able to get it off the side of the road. took about 5 minutes to get it restarted. took to dealer and they found the engine three quarts low on oil. flushed engine and changed oil and filter. at 1522 miles vehicle stalled after turning corner in rush hour traffic. had to push vehicle off of bridge and out of traffic. got it started and took straight to dealer. engine was three quarts low on oil again. engine is currently being replaced under warranty. if vehicle stalls on highway or in heavy traffic somebody could be injured or worse. i understand about bad parts being a certified technician. but if this is a common problem it needs to be addressed. *tr

5/8/14 - transmission stopped working while driving to work. error messages appeared on the dashboard as the accelerator lost all power causing me to force the vehicle off the road. multiple more error messages appeared to service the transmission. rpms had been running high for a few weeks. gears were not shifting properly. vehicle taken to dealership. it was kept for over 2 weeks for repairs. i was told everything was fixed. 6/9/14 - same exact scenario occurred again. this time, the car brought itself to a halt. i was able to get off the road in time. when trying to shift from park to drive you could feel the car shutter. rpms remained extremely high. car was taken back to the dealership for additional inspection repairs. no updates. *tr

When starting out from 1-2, and 2-3 gears, about 75% of the time one of two things happens.. 1, jerky and hard shifting or 2, does not get gas to the engine until i floor it then it jerks very hard. every time i took it in, i asked them to look at it. they confirmed the problem but a transmission update did not fix the problem. still happening at 11,000 miles. jerks my neck, and worried about getting rear ended.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 jeep cherokee. the contact stated that while driving uphill at 55 mph and towing an rv, the temperature gauge on the instrument panel increased to the hot level. the contact stated that the temperature started to go down after reaching the peak of the hill. the contact stated that the failure recurs every time the vehicle was driven up an incline. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the failure was unable to be duplicated. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 3,000.

When starting from a cold start the engine and/or transmission jerks multiple times for the first minute during driving. after the first stop, the car settles down and does not seem to do it again. *tr

I was traveling on 295n in left lane just passing mall traffic when all of my warning gauges started to go off, over heat, oil, check engine and others. there was a loud explosion that sounded like a shot gun in a barrel, the car was all the way to hot. it died and i was able to direct it over to the left lane and to the shoulder of the highway. it was only 2 and 1/2 months old with 2400 miles on it. i called for a tow to dealer ship. state police arrived on scene for safety. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 jeep cherokee. the contact stated that the gear indicator on the gear box began to blink and the service engine indicator illuminated intermittently. the vehicle stalled while making a left turn at an unknown speed, but was able to be restarted. the dealer stated that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. while driving 70 mph, the speed reduced on its own and the vehicle stalled again. the vehicle was able to be restarted and was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v293000 (vehicle speed control). the vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was unknown.

Vehicle does not shift gears properly both on city streets and highway. often slams into next gear at unexpected times or not at all. on the highway when trying to accelerate past a car there was absolutely no pick up, the car did not even go. it has even caused the car to jump forward after breaking and coming to a complete stop. this has all been happening continuously since purchasing the car. i was initially told it was a software issue but no updates have seemed to fix the issues and it just continues to get worse, i'm scared for my safety.

Upon acceleration 5mph, multiple warning lights. transmission light, red lightning bolt light, shifting hard, wheel locked up, battery light came on, car died. car is 2 months old. dash flashed red writing, can no shift unless in p before died. i was in the middle of intersection when this happened. hurried to turn car off and turn back on and it drove. seems to do this when the car has sat for a long period of time. shifts hard doesn't accelerate when the problem occurs. dates occurred same problem 3/30, 3/31, 4/1. car is at the dealer for review. they did 3199 pcm software update 3/31/14. same problem occurred 4/1. *tr

Vehicle has been taken to dealer for same issue 4 times. the information reflected indicates the first time that we brought the care in. initially we took the care in because vehicle was shifting roughly and would sometimes delay before engaging gear when pressing accelerator. after vehicle reprogrammed and returned to customer it was being driven on freeway at normal speeds when the check transmission light came on, told driver to pull over and the vehicle lost ability to accelerate. vehicle coasted to side of freeway and was towed to dealer who attempted to fix vehicle. vehicle returned to customer, a short time later vehicle had same issue on freeway. again towed to dealer who again attempted to repair vehicle and replaced transmission. a couple of months later while driving on the freeway again vehicle exhibited same exact behavior. was towed to dealer awaiting resolution of issue. this problem represents a significant safety hazard. review of similar incidents on this website as well as other websites indicates this is a widespread problem that tends to occur at high rates of speed when a complete loss of vehicle power is dangerous to both those driving the affected vehicle and those on the road. *tr

A jeep authorized dealership changed the engine oil and oil filter for my vehicle. about 15 minutes after i took my vehicle from the dealership, the incident happened on a highway. "service transmission" warning showed up first, the engine light was on, and some electronic functions were disabled, which include, but are not limited to, the forward collision warning, the parksense, the lane sense, and the adaptive cruise control. the esc activation / malfunction indicator light was on. there was loud rattling noise from the engine, and the vehicle was shaking while moving on the highway. i had a difficult time moving the vehicle off the highway. after i parked on a surface road, i found no engine oil was registered on the dipstick. the leaked oil was splashed over the vehicle's exterior. in particular, it covered the parking sensors and the rear window, which disabled the electronic safety features and greatly reduced my visibility while driving. the vehicles behind me on the highway were also splashed by the leaked oil and were beeping and/or cutting in my lane to complain. the dealership determined that the rubber ring that seals the cartridge housing of the oil filter was broken, causing the engine oil leak. this o-shaped rubber ring comes with the oem oil filter that was installed when the oil filter was changed. the engine was damaged. the dealership stated that no test drive is required to check if there is a leak for oil change service. three other jeep dealerships confirmed this claim. i believe there is a design defect in the oil filter sealing that can cause life threatening accidents. i believe jeep does not instruct their authorized dealership to implement an oil filter change procedure that ensures a part defect like this would be discovered before the vehicle leaves the dealership. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 jeep cherokee. the contact stated that while driving at 30 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was able to restart after multiple attempts. the failure recurred intermittently. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the failure was unable to be determined. the contact mentioned that the vehicle computer software was reset but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 1,500.

After 2 days owning this vehicle the transmission began to have issues shifting from park to drive and reverse. i also got "service transmission" warning lights and "service parking brake" warning lights. the vehicle went in for service and was in the shop for 3 days. 2 months later i had the same issue and the vehicle went in for service for 4 days. 2 months later the vehicle went in for service for the same thing for 8 days. currently the vehicle has been in for service a 4th time for the same thing for 3 days so far. problems range from hesitation and/or jumping into gear from park to drive or reverse, rough shifting at all speeds and parking brake intermittently engaging when placing the vehicle in reverse from park. *tr

Front end axle boot leak and subsequent shake/vibration in front end on acceleration and right turns mostly. went into "limp mode" upon driving during low speeds on more than one occasion with check engine and service transmission lights coming on. no good computer history stored in engine computer to determine problem even happened. shake has continued even with replacement of both front axles. limp mode and warning lights haven't happened since transmission wiring harness and transmission computer were replaced . has been serviced by two local dealerships for over a month and have had customer service contact with chrysler/jeep customer service about issues since transmission problems. engaged in lemon law action because purchase dealer has stated on more than one occasion that the shake is a characteristic of the 2014 model of jeep cherokee, "all of them have it on their lot" so there is nothing to fix. i just don't want this to be a larger issue with more vehicles involved so i am reporting my problems. *tr

Sudden lunges from unexpected downshifts, a lack of kickdown upon attempted accelleration, front-axle vibration (shaking) in low speed in low gears and complete failure to shift into 9th gear. the dealer finally got it to shift into 9th gear at 92mph but it still did not stay in gear. it also has a habit of holding in 7th gear at speeds up to 80mph in level travel on the florida turnpike and other high speed level roadways in central florida. the lunges and vibration are an especially nerve wracking daily experience in stop and go traffic.

The first time it happened was when i was merging onto a highway and the car locked. the steering wheel locked, the breaks locked, and multiple different malfunction lights came on including the engine light and my car saying to check the transmission. i turned the car off and back on, and no lights were on so i drove it to the next exit to get off the highway. as i was trying to get into a parking lot in 5 o'clock traffic, the car accelerated on its own then locked up again. i ended up having to get a new transmission owning the car for less than a month. since then the car has had random moments of accelerating on its own and when i have reported it to jeep arlington they would say nothing was wrong with my car. since then, my car has had 3 other separate occasions where it has locked up and/or accelerated on its own and having to get it towed to jeep; all reportedly by jeep having to do with my transmission. one of those times occurred again on a busy state road during 5 o'clock traffic and an officer had to stay behind me until a tow company came.

I was driving my 2014 jeep grand cherokee diesel at about 60 mph on an expressway when the check engine light came on. within seconds the car started to slow down and would not accelerate past 30 mph. the authorized jeep dealer told me that the car was not regenerating automatically thereby causing these issues. they offered me a free software upgrade to resolve the problem. a year later and the car has been to the dealer 14 times for the same issue. one upgrade after another yet the car will still have the same problems. you never know when this car will become limp. i have almost gotten into several accidents because of being on a highway and going 30 mph because the car will not regenerate automatically. jeep has not been able to find a solution to the regeneration issues.

The 9-spd automatic will rev high in first gear until the vehicle is steady at 10 mph and slam hard into second gear. shifting from second gear to third is rough as well. happens every day upon engine start. when the car has been warmed up from driving for approximately 15 minutes it goes away, but begins again upon being shut off and cooled down. this rough shifting is potentially damaging/destroying the automatic transmission and causes the driver/passengers to "jerk around" in their seats. *tr

The vehicle lunges after you stop as if it is down shifting. sometimes it bangs and jumps suddenly when taking off from a stop. the transmission seems to have not down shifted and is in too high a gear causing the engine to pause before suddenly downshifting and suddenly accelerating which sometimes it to abrupt and you have to slam on the brakes to keep from hitting traffic. we have had several reprograms of the transmission without any resolution. the last caused the car to suddenly lunge and jump out into traffic while sitting at a stop with the brake on and no gas applied. we could have caused an accident... the motor has started leaking oil from the oil filter and cooler assembly on top of the 3.2 liter v6. it appears it has a bad gasket or seal or it may be cracked. i see several other owners complaining of this be cause you can smell burning oil, we removed the top engine cowl and carry a fire extinguisher just in case it catches fire. it appears that you could easily lose most of the oil and seize the motor not to mention catch on fire. the rear hatch camera and controls malfunction in wet weather. the camera turns to snow or moving objects appear frame by frame and not in real time. the controls fail to allow gate operation. i contacted jeep today and am taking it in for the oil issue and will try to get them to fix the transmission and rear gate issues. this is a danger to drive when it can launch into traffic or leak oil causing a fire or short out the gate from an electrical fire. jeep needs to get these issues addressed.
