2014 jeep cherokee. service transmission message comes on screen, transmission make loud noise, engine shuts down. hard to control vehicle. almost crashed. dealer says transmission faulty. second time this happened

I was driving my motor home in extremely heavy winds at the time and the motor home and my jeep 2014 latitude (4 cylinder) with active drive ii started to sway rather violently side to side. i was going about 55 mph at the time. really did not know what was happening but both the rv and cherokee were swaying violently. i could see the cherokee in my rear view camera. i thought maybe i had blown a tire on the rv or suffered a major suspension problem on the rv. was really difficult to control the rv and could have really resulted in a major accident. fortunately i was able to slow down and get stopped without having an accident. of course i got out and checked everything imaginable but could not find one thing that may have caused the problem. i continued our trip without further incident but to this day i am perplexed as to what caused the violent swaying. the only possible reason i can even imagine is the strong winds at the time. however, that is simply a guess and as stated earlier i really do not a valid and scientific reason for the swaying. i can however say with absolute certainty that the incident was very, very frightening and easily could have resulted in a major catastrophe. would love to know the reason so it could be corrected. please not that this has happened only once.

Shortly after starting our 1500 mile trip on july 14 crossing a bridge the monaco diesel pusher motorhome towing a 2014 jeep cherokee 4x4 latitude with active drive ii shook badly front-to-back and side-to-side and would not stop until i pulled over to the side of the road. normally a bump will cause the mh to shake front-to-back momentarily. i got out and checked around and under both vehicles and found nothing amiss. got in and headed on our trip. a couple of times that day the mh shook when hitting a bump but not as violently as earlier. no more shaking on the trip and no apparent damage. the jeep had been disengaged and reengaged from the motorhome a couple of times with no sign of damage. we traveled from bryce canyon national park to capital reef np on 20 july over a curvy, hilly highway. at capitol reef we disconnected the jeep and found the passenger side tow bar/tab had damaged the shroud in the front of the jeep. we drove the mh and jeep separately to moab, ut for repairs. when the mechanic removed the lower front shroud on the jeep and inspected the damage he found the welds on the jeep aluminum bracket that the tow-bar base-plate was fastened to were broken on the passenger side and cracked on the driver's side. we continued driving both separately to our home.

I have recently experienced violent shaking of my 2014 jeep cherokee being flat towed behind my motor home. it has happened twice on the same day. very scary situation. this after several thousand miles of trouble-free towing. the first time was over an uneven patch of repaired road. the second occurrence just happened out of the blue. i had to bring the rig to a complete stop to eliminate the rocking/wobbling motion of the jeep, which was clearly visible to me in the rear view camera. jeep dealer won't acknowledge the problem because they are unable to duplicate the issue. multiple complaints about the same issue from different owners should suffice. the need to bring a large rv to a complete stop in order to eliminate the wobbling is a serious safety problem, especially while driving on busy highways. this deficiency in the jeep is simply a bad accident waiting to happen dealer says they need to be able to duplicate the problem. enough owners have had this problem and their separate complaints have duplicated the problem many times over. jeep needs to look into this immediately before it causes multiple serious accidents. updated 9/25/15 *ln ...video available

While in motion, the car stalled. the car would not then shift to any gear. after continuously trying to shift gears, the car would jump from park to drive. literally jump. i had to drive home (a few blocks) with my hazards on praying all the way. i called huntington beach jeep first thing in the morning. they towed the car to the service dept. i was told the transmission would be fixed. i tried to upgrade out of the shotty cherokee to a grand cherokee for safety reasons but the dealer would not forgive the negative equity in the car as we've had it for a year. he insisted we put more money down and have a car payment of $600-700 dollars. we refused. we feel jeep does not care about the safety but only the number of cars they sell each month which is a same. thank god we didn't have a car accident as they my family would be planning a funeral. maybe that is what it will take.

Note: this issue is with the 2014 jeep grand cherokee ecodiesel engine: on the 1st occurrence, after merging on highway with 4 passengers, at approximately 55-60 mpg, vehicle began to violently shudder/vibrate, with shuddering steering wheel difficult to control. shuddering stopped when removing foot from accelerator, and started shuddering again when i began accelerating. it happened several more times on the way home, and has continued to vibrate/shudder intermittently every day since. it seems to primarily happen around 7th/8th gear at 55-60mph, but has also happened going around 40mph. research shows this is a common problem with the 2014 ecodiesel engine, and could very easily cause a fatal accident.

Driving 80mph on highway when computer shut down, lost power steering, lost response from throttle, rpm went to 0, mph went to 0. note on dash computer said to shift into desired gear when the car was already in drive. no check engine light came on. *tr

Bought a $55,000 jeep. got a call from the dealership atlantic chrysler in northfield nj 10 days later to schedule for a service recall on the steering. they let it leave the showroom knowing there was a recall in affect. saw the story about this on gma this am, wanted to report, not right at all! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 jeep cherokee. the contact stated that the vehicle violently shook, while being towed. the contact stated that the failure only occurred when motor home was towing the car. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where diagnosed the problem as the electric power steering assist wiring harness and fuse holder needed to be installed. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 25,000.....updated 07/11/16 *bf after the steering assist was installed, the computer showed the rack and pinion had broken. updated 07/13/16*lj updated 07/14/16.*jb *cn

Again, i just got back the car from the dealership at around 4pm (12/3). the work order says that they have changed/replaced the adaption part of the car to re-learn to drive. so, i drove it home. around 510pm, in the middle of the rain the car stopped again. luckily again, that im not in the freeway.the same thing, the car stopped and the dashboard gave me a message to shift gear and the car started to shake/jitter. i called the tow truck and they towed it again to the glendale dealership. this is the 4th time that it happen, with the same problem. i am risking my life and my family's life. please help! *tr

While driving the steering wheel got locked all of sudden. fortunately i was not on high way and the brake was working at that time, otherwise i would not be able to type here or i would have killed someone else. *tr

This is the 3rd time it happened. my previous odi # 16038484. while driving out of the parking lot the car just stopped and the car screen has a message to shift the gear. i did that and the car shakes/jitter. the parking attendant helped me to push the car on the side.

#1-car jerks itself out of lane very heavily to the left, almost turns itself left on it's own when lane sense is turned on but not sensing the lane (white indication light). car does not jerk left when lane sense is sesing the lane properly (green indication light). #2-park sense flashes on the screen 5-6 times while i?m driving. it thinks i?m parking while driving the car or slowing the car down into a turn lane. it literally displays the diagram of car with yellow bars showing how close i am to something while driving or waiting in a turn lane, however, there were no cars or obstacles ahead of me, nor am i parking. at one point i was pulling the car left into the left hand lane to turn into my neighborhood. i was not at a full stop, but almost, in the left-hand turn lane. park sense flashed 5 times on and off each time a car passed me in the other direction. #3-lane sense cannot sense the lane 90% of the time on main streets, only highways. *tr

The owner of a 2014 jeep cherokee latitude purchased this vehicle in may of 2014. within 3 months i noticed having problems with the dash board with lights or instrument cluster not coming on when vehicle is started. i figured it was a fuse and did not immediately have a concern, but this has occurred at least three times. i take the car to the dealer and reported grinding noise when i turn steering wheel, dash lights going out, and concern of not receiving the gas mileage that i should be receiving. the dealer at jeep chrysler at local state diagnosed as the rack and pinion and needed to be replaced. i travel out of state and during my visit the dash board lights are out again and disables me not to see how fast i am going or how much gas is in the car. i take the car to the dealer and the dealer reports it's the instrument cluster. *js

I do not know if this is a safety issue but i am concerned. my jeep has been in twice to the dealer for noisy steering and i am scheduled to take it in again this week for the same issue. the dealer has been unable to repair it. it is continuing to make noise. the noise is worse when the weather is cold outside. i have noticed that others on the internet have complained of this same issue with this new model of jeep cherokee. *tr

While parking the vehicle, the parksense feature disabled on its own. immediately thereafter, the red lightning bolt indicator light appeared on the dash, which has been known to be associated with the electronic throttle control, glow plugs, swirl motor failure (low pressure in rail or fuel rail pressure malfunction) and also speed sensors. the vehicle then revved up on its own without acceleration while my foot was positioned firmly on the brake pedal. immediately following that, the word "transmission" appeared on the dash, then the check engine light, then the collision indicator as if a car crash had occurred, which it had not. finally, the power steering became very stiff. drove the vehicle to the dealership it was purchased from and they said the codes were unknown like hieroglyphics. left vehicle there. the following monday the dealership informed me there were 3 software upgrades that were needed on the vehicle, however, those upgrades did not correct the problem. technician also informed me the car was not safe to drive and they didn't feel safe driving it themselves and got off of the highway during a test run. the technician further explained the vehicle had 3 test runs and failed all 3 and it was beyond their expertise so chrysler engineers would be consulted this week. lastly, the technician informed me i "may be ahead of a recall issue." the car is 5 and half months old. i ordered the car, meaning, i had it made/built from the manufacturer. it was not a car purchased from the lot. therefore, no other drivers of the car and it is brand new. it is a safety concern, especially since the cherokee has been out of production for many years until the 2014 release. as a side note, i remember an incident that occurred the week prior when the vehicle had difficulty shifting gears (automatic transmission). instead it stalled and revved on its own. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 jeep cherokee. while flat towing the vehicle with the rv and driving over very rough terrain at 25 mph, the jeep would wobble out of control. as a result, the contact would lose control of the rv. when the failure occurred, the contact would have to pull to the side of the road to correct the failure. when the vehicle was restarted after it had been towed, the stability control and steering warning lights would illuminate. the manufacturer and dealer were contacted about the failure, but were unable to resolve the failure. the failure mileage was 290,006. updated 01/20/16*lj *tr

Traveling to work touched the command button on the steering wheel at that very moment the radio, screen, bluetooth, uconnect system lost power. the radio shut off and the center screen that controls many safety features of the car went blank and would not come back on. i had to call the dealership and they took it in immediately to resolve the issues. i have had the car two months put about 1,200 miles on the car and it has been back at jeep several times with issues/recalls. *tr

This jeep still intermittently experiences the sensation of wheel wobble when shifting between 1st & 2nd gear. the dealer is saying vehicle performs as intended. ?? i experience this periodically while driving but not every time. this is troublesome & worries me every day while driving this vehicle. *tr

Was stopped at a red light in an intersection when my instrument cluster/screen lit up with the following: cel on abs/brake lights on service parking brake on 4x4 system disabled odometer flashing upon all those messages/lights coming on we lost all power steering control to the vehicle. speedometer was not functioning while attempting to move the vehicle out of the interaction into a nearby parking lot. once safely parked in the parking lot we turned off the car and turned it back on again to the same messages/lights turning on. we regained power steering after we turned it off and back on but all other issues persisted. called for a tow back to the dealership. chrysler claimed it was a bad abs module. i am filing a safety complaint for poor electrical design if an abs module has the ability to bring down the entire computer system in the 2014 cherokee this can pose a serious hazard to all vehicle operators. *tr

We leased this car in 3/14 with the thought of problem free driving. the first week we felt as though the car was hopping when shifting. then the steering wheel would squeak when you turned it (found that odd). took it back to dealer they did a flash change but did not road test it. they said we need struts and they are on back order till who knows when. so now we set here afraid to drive it but still have to make payments. i am a 68 year old women who does not want to drive a year old car. oh btw the car still does hop when it shifts. can anyone point me in the right direction to turn this car in? *tr

2014 jeep cherokee. consumer writes in regards to vehicle wobbles and sways when flat towing behind consumers motor home and parking brake issues. *smd the consumer stated the wobbling or swaying occurred when a rough spot was hit in the road. the consumer stated the incident happened several times. it was an intermittent problem and can not always be duplicated. *jb...updated 03-10-16 *bf updated 11/01/2017*cn

When towing the 2014 jeep cherokee behind my rv and driving over rough road surfaces, rutted road surfaces or uneven railroad crossings, the steering axle starts to oscillate and shakes the rv and jeep violently. the only way to stop the oscillation is to come to a complete stop. this is very unsafe when operating on freeways or state highways. i have (1) had the rv inspected and (2) purchased a new tow bar with an immobilizer kit (factory installed) and had the jeep cherokee (3) aligned (computerized). i believe that the problem is centered around the 2014 redesigned model in which jeep utilizes a rack and pinion steering system that permits the steering axle to oscillate while being towed in all wheel neutral. the 2014 jeep cherokee is the 3rd jeep that i have towed behind a rv. the prior jeeps were both jeep grand cherokees (2007 and 2012) and i never experienced this problem with either one. the oscillating problem began with the redesigned 2014 model. i have had the jeep inspected at several jeep dealerships and have been told that they can not duplicate the concern and could not find a cause of the concern by road testing the jeep. the road test ultilized consisted of test driving the jeep. the oscillating issue is not while "driving" the jeep - it is while "towing" the jeep in all wheel neutral.

Upon acceleration before reaching 30 mph the wheels wobble, to the point of tires shaking. this is an ongoing problem. a star case was opened with chrysler in august 2014 for a solution to this ongoing problem. have had it into the dealership(front axles being replaced) on several occasions but still no fix for the problem a year later. it has gotten to the point where i am feeling unsafe driving this vehicle. update 9/15/15*cw updated 12/13/2017*cn

This is a followup complaint to (odi number) 10618847. a phone call was made to ntsb referring to this incident (ref 670186). today while driving in traffic and at an intersection, the 2014 jeep cherokee i was driving bucked violently then stalled. the power steering stopped working and the vehicle was brought to a stop. when i restarted the vehicle, it was not capable of exceeding 3-4mph even though the engine was revving. the boston police responded as i was in a dangerous location and waited with me for an hour until aaa could tow my vehicle back to the dealership. the check engine light and service transmission message appeared on the dashboard. the vehicle was towed to the dealership just days ago under identical circumstances. the last time the dealership performed a 'software update' and assured me that with the new software this problem could not happen again. any assistance you could provide would be very much appreciated. *tr

2014 jeep cherokee latitude v6 3.2 liter has right front wheel shimmy on right hand turns and on acceleration after stops. dealer said that this is normal due to torque of engine and horse power of engine. *tr

At low speed turns, left and right, ie in a parking lot or turning at an intersection, popping and groaning from front suspension/steering assembly. very audible and ratcheting feel can be felt in the frame and steering wheel. not an issue when driving straight or at speed. first trip to dealer...could not duplicate. next day, after contacting jeep consumer service, the jeep was taken back to the dealer and i test drove the vehicle in the parking lot for the service consultant. the popping/groaning noise was evident in every turn and the car was taken into the service area for suspected "suspension" problem. next day contact with dealer...they think it is either the axles or transmission. called jeep and they called dealership. i was then told by jeep they were replacing the axles. subsequent msg from service department confirmed they were changing the right front axle but it was back ordered. now two days...no jeep, no transportation, no loaner. i am a master army aviator with thirty years of flying. i know when a machine is broke or about to be. *tr

Wobbly and shimmy front end on acceleration. only in 2nd gear from 1700-2000 rpms. you can feel the vibration throughout the whole car, mainly steering wheel and seats. it happens approx. 6 times out of 10 when the car accelerates from a stop. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 jeep cherokee. while driving 60 mph, the vehicle rocked back and forth. the power steering shook violently and seized. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that a flat towing wiring kit was needed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was approximately 5,000.

Since when i first flat towed (july 2014) my 2014 jeep cherokee behind my diesel pusher motorhome the front wheels and axles will wobble significantly causing safety concerns that the vehicle will break loose or render the vehicle not drivable. this occurs at any speed on uneven roads surfaces. in order to stop the car from wobbling you must bring the motorhome to a complete stop regardless if you are on an interstate in heavy traffic, on a long bridge with no shoulder, city streets in rush hour traffic, on a steep mountain pass, etc. i have talked to jeep several times but cannot get any action. they act like i do not know what i am talking about. they never heard of it. a recent article in february 2016 family motor coaching says fca knows about the problem and has a fix yet when i call i get the run around. one person said that fca was developing a kit that owners may purchase sometime this year. this problem should be a recall and parts and installation provided free. my case number at jeep is 28673568. another rv season is starting with jeep owners towing there jeeps behind there motorhome, how long must we wait for fiat chrysler automobiles to recognize this problem and notify jeep cherokee owners about this problem and how fca is going to correct this problem. note: rewriting the towing instructions will not stop this problem.

I purchased my vehicle the jeep 2014 cherokee because of the ease of towing that the owners manual in 2014 and other sources other sources we had checked indicated. there was no mention in the owner's manual of any problem with the steering of a vehicle while being flat towed behind an rv. this was the best choice for us as it was the simplest vehicle in motorhome digestive towing vehicles. since we have experienced a severe front-end wobble while towing. in 2016 i received a card in the mail indicating a part was needed actually it said to put in the owners manual but in reading it indicated a wiring kit was required. explore this item with my dealer the first time he didn't know what i was talking about the second time i brought in a part number that i had found in the motorhome magazine. i gave him the part number they researched it and found that this was a wiring kit required for flat towing. my assumption was since it was required it was some sort of recall. to my surprise it cost me over $500 and in contacting chrysler they refuse to reimburse me or even acknowledge the issue. even the 2016 literature regarding flat towing a jeep cherokee did not indicate the requirement of a wiring kit so my assumption is they are not acknowledging this problem. it is a severe safety problem for people who bought the vehicle for flat towing behind an rv. i would appreciate you looking into this matter and getting back to me with any information or results that you may find. regards [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 jeep cherokee. the contact stated that the vehicle began to shake excessively whenever the accelerator pedal was engaged from a complete stop. the vehicle was towed back to the dealer since the contact was concerned about the safety risk while driving the vehicle. the failure occurred twice in the first week that the contact purchased the vehicle from the dealer. the dealer did not perform a diagnostic test to determine the cause of failure. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 458. updated 08/12/14*lj the consumer has since traded the vehicle. updated 09/18/14

towing the jeep 4 wheels down behind my 38' diesel pusher motorhome, the jeep started jerking back and forth quite violently, enough to cause a serious shaking in the rear of the 30,000 lb. motorhome. brought the vehicle(s) to an immediate stop, checked both vehicles carefully, and could find no cause. continued on with no shaking or problem. about four hundred miles further, after a 90 degree turn at less than ten mph, it did it again. once more i brought the rig to a complete stop, and then continued with no shaking. on my 5000 mile trip this occurred approximately seven times. the only apparent commonality was that in most cases the jeep had gone over a rough patch (railroad track. raised bump in road, towed over a curb) and most events occurred at speeds under 30 mph. i have found there are others others towing the new style jeep cherokee who are experiencing the same problem. i am not new to towing; i have towed other jeeps over 200,000 miles with no problem. i truly believe there is a fault with this vehicle.

Vehicle wobbles/shakes/vibrates upon acceleration from a stop - now is doing it intermittently at other speeds - first repair on 7/22/14 "install sop front axle assemblies & drive 300 miles to completely break in a half shaft" - after the 300 miles and no change to the problem - second repair 8/18/14 "install sop rear motor mount, align engine with 2 other side mounts - driving it off the lot after this repair did not fix the problem - at this time chrysler has no fix for the problem - i no longer feel safe driving this vehicle and have received no substantive information that it is safe to drive - as a matter of fact i'm having trouble getting an update from chrysler other than they no there is a problem and they are working on it.

Transmission shifting problems causing hesitation and/or forward lurching, high engine revving, front end wheel hop. all warrant a huge safety concern. vehicle has been in for service 13 times over the last 14 months and has still not been repaired. several star cases opened with no resolution. all concerns confirmed by technician test drive on 6 different occasions and has currently been in the shop for five days.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 jeep cherokee. the contacted stated that after making a left turn, the vehicle suddenly became uncontrollable and independently steered to the right. there were unknown warning lights illuminated as the contact crashed into a tree and an electrical box. the contact sustained head and hand injuries however, the air bags did deploy. the vehicle was destroyed and the contact was taken for medical treatment. a police report was filed of the incident. the manufacturer was not notified of the incident and the vehicle was not inspected to determine the cause of the steering failure. the failure and current mileage was 8,200.

Upon acceleration 5mph, multiple warning lights. transmission light, red lightning bolt light, shifting hard, wheel locked up, battery light came on, car died. car is 2 months old. dash flashed red writing, can no shift unless in p before died. i was in the middle of intersection when this happened. hurried to turn car off and turn back on and it drove. seems to do this when the car has sat for a long period of time. shifts hard doesn't accelerate when the problem occurs. dates occurred same problem 3/30, 3/31, 4/1. car is at the dealer for review. they did 3199 pcm software update 3/31/14. same problem occurred 4/1. *tr

Shortly after purchasing my 2014 jeep cherokee latitude i began feeling the sensation of wheel shimmy in the car. i first noticed during a right hand turn at accelerating the vehicle through an intersection. the best description i can give is as if a cv joint was loose and a shimmy in the vehicle and steering resulted. when at a complete stop and accelerating this shimmy occurs even when not turning right. feels like front left wheel? i took to dealer twice. at first they acknowledged the sensation to me and said they went to lot and drove a new cherokee to see if that same feel happened. and it did. told me it was the way they were. ??? i continue to have this issue and am very distraught about it. i called mfg client care & reported. they instructed me to take back to dealer and call them after dealer has the vehicle. i did that. this time the dealer says they are not able to replicate the problem when they test drive the car. they say all components look tight with no wear. jeep has 2500 miles on it. this is a safety concern. i am being told that to just continue driving the vehicle and if a complete break occurs, they will fix then. this is unacceptable. *tr

This car has been looked at by chrysler group llc for steering/transmission issues 4 times since march 22,2014. there has been two software updates that have not corrected the problem. there is a safety issue driving the vehicle that needs to be addressed before someone gets really hurt or killed. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 jeep cherokee. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 15 mph, the front driver's side wheel was wobbling. the failure occurred on multiple occasions. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 2,000.

The transmission has had issues since i got the car, the dealer has done several software updates but none completely solve the issue. the car feels like it wobbles when it accelerates from a stop and they cannot seem to fix this problem or admit that there is one. also, when you turn the steering wheel it makes a grinding or whining noise and i have brought it back twice for this. they just grease the system and it stays quiet for maybe 10 miles. i'm concerned that this could lead to a much bigger issue in terms of safety if it loses steering to some degree.

I was driving on a highway. i made a complete stop at the traffic light when red. on green traffic signal, the car placed itself into no motion. the car activated the following warning lights: parking brake, service engine, stability control, and the monitor displayed service transmission. this problem has been repetitive along with a cat purr during acceleration since first day of new purchase.

When accelerating from 5 to 10 mph there is a shake in the front end of the car, after speeding up it seems to disappear. i have found several links where people are having the same issue. *tr
