Recently reported STRUCTURE problems on 2008 Honda Odyssey

The gas-filled struts on the rear lift gate of my honda odyssey minivan have completely failed. the rear lift gate to the minivan now falls shut with a very dangerous speed and force. the lift gate is very heavy and i am certain it would severely injure my 4 year old boys if it was dropped or accidentally let go. honda has recalled other 2008 and 2009 gas-filled struts for ex-l and touring models but claims that my gas-filled struts on my ex model are not as common of a failure. i'm not buying it. it's a serious safety hazard. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda odyssey. the contact stated that while in park, the tailgate failed and would not remain open. the vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was not notified. the approximate failure mileage was 58,000. *tr

Lift struts on back hatch quit working suddenly with no prior problems. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda odyssey. the contact stated that the rear lift gate independently closed with an abnormally large amount of force. the vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnosis and the contact was informed that the struts would need to be replaced. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 120,000.

I tried to open the trunk and realized it felt like dead weight. i lifted it, closed it slowly and tried again. i'm guessing the pneumatic lift is not working. this could have been very dangerous if i lifted it and let it go without realizing the weight. for now, i cannot use the trunk. *tr

The rear tailgate strut failed on my odyssey ex- important to differentiate from the ex-l, which was affected by a recall for the same thing (nhtsa campaign #12v062000). the recall did not apply to the ex nor lx models. problem is the ex-l, ex & lx models share the same strut part #74820-shj-a21, price $63.91/each. the parts information is right off honda's own website. the recall makes no mention of failures to any motors, generators or power locks. the only reference is to the strut itself. if the strut is the problem, why doesn't the recall apply to all '08 odysseys if all odysseys share the same part? i called honda for an explanation & the rep said they would only pay for repairs to models covered by the recall. since my vehicle wasn't, they wouldn't pay &, as it stands now, i'm out $213.71, which is the cost for both parts & labor. i believe i am entitled to reimbursement of the full cost of replacing the struts & i also believe all '08 odyssey models should be recalled for this problem as failure of the part poses a serious risk of injury to anyone standing under the door, which happens alot while loading/unloading the vehicle. *tr

2008 honda odyssey. consumer writes in regards to vehicle tailgate struts issues. *smd the consumer stated the tailgate struts broke and lost their gas due to leakage. the consumer stated a recall was issued for vehicles with power tailgates. he believed even the vans without power tailgates, should be recalled.

Power-tailgate struts have failed and trunk will not remain open. when my wife lifted the trunk it nearly fell on her and hit her head. this same exact issue has been identified in the 2008 honda odyssey touring models and a recall was issued. i believe the recall should extend to non-touring model as well (i have a lx 5 speed automatic trim level). i called honda and they said that my vin was not included in the recall, but i believe that it should be. in order to repair it, i will have to pay out of pocket. *tr

The tail gate of my 2008 odyssey does not work correctly the gas power struts that help open and close the tail gate have internal failure and need to be replaced so the honda dealer says. it is a safety hazard because the tail gate slams shut without these struts working. honda has not included my car in the recall of 2/2012. *tr

Yesterday (3/4/2013), i lifted open the trunk, on my honda odyssey 2008 (ex-l). i noticed that it was a little heavy to lift. when i lifted it all the way up and let it go, it immediately came down on my head. luckily, i was able to catch it before it hit my head. the trunk door would not stay in the open position, and comes down to a hard close if not held open by hand. so far, i have not received any communication from honda on the below mentioned recall, that is same as the issue i am facing report receipt date: feb 16, 2012 nhtsa campaign number: 12v062000 component(s): structure potential number of units affected: 45,747 recall notification :honda. 2008- early 2009 model year honda odyssey ex-land touring models power liftgate gas struts. *tr

The power sliding doors will sometimes not close... one will start to close when we push the lever, then shudder or jerk and then reverse itself so that it is fully open once again. this started first with the passenger side sliding door, and has recently started happening on the driver's side as well. we brought it to a dealer and seemed quite familiar with the symptoms, suggesting that the middle set of rollers on the door were causing the issue. this seems to be a defect in either the material or the design. *tr

I went to open and lift up the rear lift gate to retrieve items in the back. without any warning, the rear gate came down abruptly and struck me on the back of the head and hurt my neck as well. *tr

The r & r glove box locked and will not open. after two attempts by mechanics, i was told i would need to replace the striker and lock at an exorbitant cost to me. this vehicle has less than 30000 miles. what would cause the glove compartment to lock and not unlock? *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda odyssey. the contact stated that the rear power liftgate would not remain open when activated and would close abruptly. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, who stated that both power liftgate gas struts would need to be replaced. there was a recall associated with the failure under nhtsa campaign id number 12v062000 (structure). the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 78,000...updated 06/24/13 *bf the consumer stated the vehicle was repaired by honda at no cost the owner. updated 06/28/2013 *js

Automatic rear sliding doors fell off while parked. door jammed, and a screw had fallen out from under panel. dorr fel off less than a minute later. *tr

We own the odyssey ex-l with a manual tailgate. the taligate has stopped opening to its maximum height. the shortened distance is not obvious until you proceed under the door and hit your head on the rear tailgate. i'm probably like most odyssey owners--more focused on her children in a parking lot than the height of my tailgate--but the headache that followed hitting my head on the tailgate this morning made me file this complaint. the door still opens smoothly but unless you are paying attention and push the tailgate up a few more inches after the liftgate supports have stopped, the door is too low and could result in a serious injury. *tr

The rear tailgate struts failed to hold the tailgate open while i was taking groceries out of the car. the door hit the back of my neck but did not cause an injury requiring medical attention. *tr

Please excuse my safety complaint just sent earlier. i included my wrong email address. re: rear tail gate strut failure when i was unloading groceries out of the rear trunk with the rear tailgate open, the struts failed and the tailgate hit the back side of my head/neck, but did not require medical attention. *tr

The rear liftgate door had become abnormally heavy and does not holdup on its own. referencing nhtsa campaign id number: 12v062000 (structure: body: hatchback/liftgate: support device) i called the dealer. the service manager advised that the vehicle was not included in the recall campaign and offered no assistance. the manufacturer was notified and stated that the vehicle was not under any recalls and offered no additional assistance. this problem must be something honda needs to fix on their own. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda odyssey. the contact stated that she was having difficulty lifting the rear lift gate. upon successfully opening the lift gate, the hydraulics failed and the door erroneously closed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 12v062000 (structure:body:hatchback/liftgate:hinge and attachments). the failure mileage was unavailable and the current mileage was 40,778.

Rear lift gate was in fully open position then fell and hit me on head while removing groceries from the rear of the vehicle. appears that the lift gate struts failed. the lift gate operates manually, not electronically or automatically. *tr

Both doors appear to be too close to the outside of the van. it rubs the exterior, ie paint from the exterior of the vehicle. otherwise, they function perfectly well. *tr

Rear liftgate struts failed causing liftgate to fall suddenly on me beneath the rear door. honda has already issued a recall on some 2008 models. when i called the dealer and honda customer support regarding the incident, they refused to cover repair under recall. informed about safety concern but no acknowledgment by honda that this is a safety issue with potential for injury. recall should be expanded to cover more vehicles than acknowledged by honda. honda should act responsibly to prevent injury to owners of these vehicles and recall and replace all affected vehicles before more injuries occur. the dealership told me it would cost me $200 to replace the struts. my odyssey does not have electric component struts for the rear hatch. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda odyssey. the contact stated while in park, the tailgate would not remain open. he also stated that the lift gate lock could not be unlocked with the key or manually. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or an independent mechanic for inspection. the vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the contact was informed that the vehicle was not listed under recall nhtsa campaign number: 12v062000 (structure). the approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

About 2 weeks ago...october 1, 2012, i took my honda back in to honda. my car had been accelerating on its own. i left my honda there for 3 days, at which point they determined there was nothing wrong with it, and they would like me to bring it back in to drive it "with them." there is 100% something wrong with my van again! in addition a few days ago, i was putting books in the back of my van, and the hatch struts failed, and the back hatch door fell down on my head. *tr

Paint is peeling from the primer. coming off in sheets. roof area. rust spots popping up. many complaints. class action suit has been filed. *tr

Rear liftgate of odyssey failed, luckily there were no injuries as the trunk slammed shut. took to dealer today and asked about the recall but apparently only some, not all, have been recalled, so i am paying for this failure to be repaired myself. frustrating! *tr

The morning of the 24th i opened my lift gate to put something in the trunk and once i lifted the gate up it just fell back down nearly crushing me. had i not stopped it the glass would have broken as well. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda odyssey. the contact stated that the vehicles tailgae had become inoperable and fell on the contact's shoulders. the contact did not receive any medical assistance for the injury. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that there were no failures with the tailgate and offered no other assistance. the manufacturer was notified who stated that the vehicle was not under warranty and offered no assistance. the failure mileage was 18,000 and the current mileage was 20,000.

Non powered trunk lift on my ex odyssey just stopped working. i have to literally push the trunk and keep it in position and hold it, use the trunk and then leave the door slowly, without which the trunk door will slam on its own. i hear about recalls on this issue, seems like its applicable even to non powered models. *js

Back rear hatch lift struts suddenly failed. hatch came crashing down with significant force. did not directly see the event but it happened while my children were removing items from rear compartment. rear hatch is very heavy and without operable struts the gate develops a significant force (appears to be large enough to cause injury). it is noticed that 2008 honda odyssey has a recall to similar part but for the powered lift gate version only. honda dealer has replace parts, charged to owner = $178. *tt

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda odyssey. the contact stated that the rear lift gate failed due to defective struts. the lift gate was difficult to open and would not remain opened. the manufacturer denied assistance with the repair because the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign id number: 12v0620000 (structure: body: hatchback/liftgate: support device). the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure and the current mileage was 52,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda odyssey. the contact was unloading the trunk area with the lift gate opened. suddenly, there was a loud slamming noise as the liftgate closed abruptly. the contact attempted to open the lift gate but the door would not remain open. the contact realized the struts on the lift gate were faulty and could no longer hold the liftgate open. the vehicle was taken to dealer to be repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the issue however, no assistance was provided. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign id number: 12v062000 (structure:body:hatchback/liftgate) but could not confirm if the vehicle was included in the recall. the vin was not available. the approximate current and failure mileage was 40,000.

The tailgate struts failed when my wife opened the tailgate causing a bruise on her head. skin was not broken. the struts failed slightly on the 27th and lowered the tail gate a few inches. a few days later, they failed completely and tail gate is hard to open and must be held open or it falls rapidly. the struts need to be replaced. i will take it to the dealer to see if they will honor recall, even if vin is not included on recall list or perhaps the part failure may also be covered under extended warranty. *tr

My 4 year old son was sitting in his car seat with his had on the side of the back panel when the sliding electric door closed on his hand. the door completely closed on his hand and did not reopen easily. a lot of force was used to re-open the door. the sensor for the door did not work. *tr

Structure/body:hatchback/liftgate:support device---i went to open the back door on the van to get a stroller out. it was difficult to open and very heavy. when i let go the door shut on me. i had received a recall notice in the mail prior to the incident, informing me that the struts were bad and could give out unexpectedly. (ref #12v062000) when i called the dealership i was told my vehicle was under recall, but the parts were not in. after the parts arrived at the dealership, i was called and an appointment was made for the repair. upon my arrival to the dealership for the repair, i was told my vin was not under recall after all. at that point there was no helpful person at the dealership. it has been 7 months of weight lifting getting the stroller, groceries, etc. in and out of the van. still no help from honda (the dealership or national line). *tr

The struts on my 2008 honda odyssey ex-l failed this morning. it is not covered by the current recall from feb 16, 2012, since my odyssey does not have a power liftgate. people still have to use the liftgate (powered or not), and it poses a big risk to the person under the liftgate. while supporting the liftgate with my head, i had to pull out my bicycle from the vehicle with both hands. as i moved, the liftgate would hurt me since it was only being kept open by my body. as soon as i moved out, it closed with a big bang. this is a major risk especially to the demographics of the users of the odyssey: moms with young children. this is a common problem as evidenced by this forum thread (11 pages long): http://www.odyclub.com/forums/52-2005-2010-odyssey/40133-tailgate-gas-strut-problems.html related recall: vehicle make / model: honda / odyssey model year(s): 2008-2009 manufacturer: honda (american honda motor co.) mfr's report date: feb 16, 2012 nhtsa campaign id number: 12v062000 nhtsa action number: pe11034 component: structure:body:hatchback/liftgate:support device *js

On approximately november 5, 2011 my husband went out to our 2008 honda odyssey to retrieve some items. he opened the rear liftgate as usual and while he was retrieving the bags the rear door gave way falling onto his back. the struts that hold the door up failed and can no longer support the weight of the door. not only is it difficult to lift the door, but my husband and i have since been using a piece of wood to hold up the door when needed. i understand there is a recall of certain 2008-2009 honda odyssey rear liftgate struts for this exact same problem( nhtsa campaign id# 12v062000). however, i was told by the staff and manager at phillipsburg easton honda that this recall does not apply to my vehicle eventhough it has the same exact problem listed in the recall. *tr
