Problems with 2005 Honda Odyssey ENGINE

On average, the 2005 Honda Odyssey starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 107 805 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2005 Honda Odyssey

Engine mount failure, looking at a 2000 dollar repair to replace, seems is a common problem needs attention. has caused an additional mount to fail , and is affecting the transmission mounts as well

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 honda odyssey. while driving approximately 60 mph, a loud noise was heard underneath the hood. the vehicle was pulled over onto the side of the road. the contact opened the hood and noticed a gaping hole in the engine block from where the ignition coil and spark plug blew out of the engine. the check engine indicator illuminated. the dealer was not called. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that there was no recall. the failure was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 135,000.

Front & rear engine mounts both went bad and the engine shakes at the same time is their any recall about this issure

Vehicle will not go over 25 mph without shaking violently. pilling misfire codes

Excessive oil consumption with 3.5l vtec engine for which honda was found liable on 2008-2013 odyssey and a slew of other models. my 2005 is doing the same thing yet 2005-2007 cars are not included. safety wise - when the oil pressure is low enough, the engine will lose nearly all power and cannot safely accelerate (barely maintain speed) yet, the engine oil warning light has never come on in the vehicle...

My honda odyssey is burning too much oil than it should. i am needing to add 1 quart every 2 weeks if that as it is already down 1 quart. it is regularly on time going in for oil changes and has been serviced since i've bought it in 2015. it has had many other issues and has been repaired. now this is seemingly a problem. the oil percentage is not telling me that it is low or none at all. no oil dummy lights have come on when i have not a drop of oil. i have switched and used high mileage oil rather than conventional and go every 3,000 miles & even did a treatment recently. nothing is doing the job.

Our 2005 honda odyssey vibrates, especially around 35-45 mph. honda told us that the engine mounts have broken and that is what is causing it. they are not a cheap fix. engine mounts, the last thing that you would think would go out on a vehicle! yet, when you go online, this apparently seems to be a massive problem with these vans. honda has a problem with their engine mounts braking and this seems to be ok with them. this is not ok. they need to take responsibility for this failure. we have already been through having to replace many other failures from honda throughout the years, including replacing the fuel cap before they recalled it. we will no longer be purchasing honda vehicles.

While driving, acceleration of first gear is hampered, vehicle has loss of power and slips gears. unable to get out of the way of fast moving traffic or the ability to get out of the way when in the middle of a busy intersection safely. vehicle has less than 57000 miles on engine.

Dealer said 2 engine mounts bad. the front one, is over $500 just for the part. two issues: how was it determined this part was bad and with such a significant price for one of them (there are two on this model), i take issue with the obviously flawed design. i am seriously considering legal action referencing both the above issues. my biggest concern is a fault design to drive service sales later in the life of the vehicle.

The back motor mount needs to be replaced. i have low mileage in this vehicle and the engine shudders when it is in the eco setting.

Driving at about 65 then acceleration, the can starts to shack bad, to the point danger to drive, i was able to advoide a crash, don't know about next time. looked online this happened to allot of people at different number of miles, as little as 50k and different speeds (40-65)odyssey's 2005-2010. design problem. may happen multiple times in life of van, car be expensive to fix each time. i bought this van used with 145k expected some problem. but from what i have found this is a big problem to allot of drives. danger, danger, danger

On june 15, 2015 my 2005 honda odyssey airbag system light came on and stayed until now, i was scared due to airbag might blown out or causing any trouble while vehicle in use or worst something happen. i took my vehicle to honda dealer on june 16, and i was told no recalls. they did some diagnose and i was told it was the seat belt buckle and wiring on driver side, the buckle was replace (free of charge), but the wiring cost $550 to have it fix. i refused the service due to no sense and not enough evidence to prove the issue. i did some research and found same issue on same vehicle that has airbag system lights on dashboard. i do believe that the dealer should address this as recall especially if the vehicle never been in accident. please let me know if there is anything you can do to address this issue. thanks

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 honda odyssey. while the vehicle was at the service center for maintenance, the independent mechanic diagnosed that the engine mounts would need to be replaced. the cause of the failure was not determined. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was 125,000.

Crank shaft pulley separated from hub and caused sudden & total loss of power steering while in motion. *tr

Motor mounts are broken/cracked and dealer quoted $2,466.00 to replace them!

Oil pan plug unable to screw tight, the plug where u drain the oil can't screw tight

Car jiggers and vibrates when eco mode kicks in. car also vibrates constantly. multiple motor mounts have been deemed bad and needing replacement. motor mounts should be able to handle the eco shift and last longer than this. *tr

My 2005 honda odyssey ex-l has only about 66,000 miles on it and a honda dealership said that one of the engine mounts has broken when i brought my car in for a honda's fuel pump safety recall service. i searched on the internet and found that there are thousands of honda's owners that are experiencing the same issue with honda vehicles manufactured between 2000 - 2012. the engine mounts on honda vehicles, especially the odyssey, break easily and this seems to be a design flaw that honda has neglected to correct. engine mounts should not break at about 50,000 miles. they should last even much longer than 100,000 miles. the cost of replacing the engine mount runs at approximately $1000/mount, which is very expensive. please help look into this issue. thank you. *tr

Torque converter going in the transmission. i see that there are numerous complaints about this issue and that honda has been aware of this and has done a service bulletin but no recall. this has been going on for over a year.

Told by dealer that the engine mounts are cracked and need to be replaced. in looking online, i've found this complaint on numerous sites. *js

While driving on !-25 south, the car started to choke and almost completely stalled while on the left lane. tried to merge right and slow down the car. the brakes would not respond. the car was still choked and then gives in and goes again. took the first exit and continues to press on the brakes to slow down the car. it continued on for a while before reaching a complete stop. after stopping, checked the engine for leaks or smoke and there was nothing. i started the car again and it seem to start fine. then there was some kind of light noise. i drove it to just the other side of the highway where there were some stores. took it to the dealer that just performed preventive timing belt replacement. said that they found broken/seized spark plug in cylinder 2. the work was done at 76000. current miles is 77990. the issue seem to be happening to 2005 honda odyssey. *tr

Brought the car to a honda dealership (tony honda, waipahu hi 96797) for recall (fuel pump) and routine maintenance and two broken motor mounts were discovered (right side and rear side). was advised that repair of the two broken mounts would most likely lead to damage to the remaining mounts, which would then have to be replaced as well. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 honda odyssey. the contact stated that after parking the vehicle, there was smoke coming from under the hood and moments later flames were present. the fire department extinguished the fire. a police report was filed. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 140,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 honda odyssey. the contact stated that when driving over bumpy road surfaces, the engine would vibrate abnormally. the contact also stated that when shifting gears the vehicle would jolt. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed that the rear engine mount was fractured. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 100,000.

Summer of 2014 my 2005 honda odyssey was losing power on the road to the point i had to be towed to my mechanic. turned out i was low on oil with no leaks at all and not due for an oil change. this is very stressful on my engine. my van is only used for local travel, about 20 miles per day and i have been needing to add oil about once per month, still with no leaks. i understand there is a class action suit for honda odysseys 2008-2013 for excessive oil burning, entering the combustion chamber and burning excessive oil at normal operating speeds and conditions. copied from the internet, http://www.hondaproblems.com/trends/excessive-oil-consumption/ the original lawsuit claims honda hid the problem from consumers. honda denied the allegation, despite issuing a technical service bulletin (tsb #11-033) in july of 2011 that quietly acknowledged the problem. the tsb states that "the vcm (variable cylinder management) may be repeatedly switching on and off during light throttle operation, at cruising speeds, on flat roads." essentially, the engine is working much harder than it has to in normal driving conditions. in fact, if your commute doesn't consist of climbing through the rockies, you're probably going to see more oil consumption than normal. just spoke to american honda who advised i need to take my vehicle to honda for an inspection.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 honda odyssey. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle would vibrate and become very difficult to steer. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. the technician diagnosed that the motor mounts needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the failure and current mileage was 105,000.

The transmission on my 2005 honda odyssey has to replaced and honda is claiming that is normal for a transmission to go at 100000 miles. the car drives fine for short distances but then after long distances it goes 5 miles an hour and revs really high. it was towed to honda where they told me nothing was wrong. i asked them to drain the fluid and replace it. they did that then drove it around and drained it again and it was dirty and burning. they are putting in a refurbished transmission with an extended warranty. i feel that with a honda the transmission should last a lot longer and think this is a honda issue. *tr

Dealer said that the front engine mounts were cracked and needed to be replaced. side engine mounts are also failing. *tr

When accelerating on the highway (began at approx. 55mph), my vehicle began to shake violently. any acceleration at or higher than the 55mph mark continues to make the vehicle shake. we believe the issue is caused by damaged/broken motor mounts. *tr

Replaced front engine mount on march 2014, now (oct 2014) car is due for rear mount at 102,500 miles. honda odyssey vibration caused by failed rear engine mount dangerous at high speed. there should be a safety recall on this, affecting to thousands of odyssey owners. what are we waiting for? *tr

My wife had a doctor's appointment and was waiting in the office. she has parked the car in parking lot. after sometime all of a sudden car's alarm went off. all from doctor's office rushed out to parking lot to see what happened. she noticed some smoke coming out under the hood. and within seconds car caught fire and burnt. whole front of the car burnt completely. insurance company has called it a total loss. i'm still puzzled to figure it out why this has happened. car was parked and engine was off. car was maintained as per the honda's guidelines. there were no problems or warning signs what so ever. it was running perfectly fine. had only 76000 miles on it. and strongly believe many years of driving left in it. we were pleased with the performance of it over the years. i'd ask nhtsa to look in to the incidence and have honda contact me and reimburse for our loss which is not at all our fault. *tr

When maneuvering in low mileage areas, i.e. driveways, parking lots, my power steering pump does not assist well, if at all. the vehicle makes a noise similar to an rc car with a dying battery and the steering wheel is almost impossible for me to move. in order to get out of a parking space, it can take me up to 10 or so moves because i cannot get the wheel to turn properly. *tr

Where do i start....original owner, purchased brand new. no problems for about 3-4 years, and then: transmission whine, took in to dealer off and on for several years, could never identify issue, they said. but as soon as the drivetrain warranty expired, miraculously, they identified it, and now say i need a new transmission. motor mounts found to have cracked; problem is very common per internet forums, but honda dealership denies responsibility for poor design/faulty mounts. door for second row has issues sliding; another common problem per internet but not per dealer. and finally, the struts for the rear hatch broke, almost injuring my son very badly when he was putting his bike in the back. took the car to the dealer and asked about a recall and they said no. i paid $300 4 months ago, and just now found that there was a recall 3 years ago, and they denied it!!!!! i hate honda and will never buy their cars, and do not trust the dealership. ughhh!!!! *tr

Power steering does not work well at low speeds (i.e. parking and turning corners). vehicle is hard to turn and could result in crash. also, rear motor has failed, which could result in undesirable shifting of transmission. *tr

Engine mount problems. i beseach you all, please help us! purchased this car 8 months ago from honda dealership. was convinced to buy warranty. first week it began to make noise after purchase, drove in and they said they couldn't tell me what was wrong at the time without any indicator light on and to come back. light came on was engine mounts broken oh and catalytic converter. i thought, good thing i purchased the 3,000 dollar warranty they assured me would cover major things of cost. guess what, no coverage-just these 2 repairs alone will be over 1500 not to mention when the other 2 mounts break fully. i have read 100 s of people online reporting this exact problem on the honda odysseys. this is the same as robbing the poor. why tell me buying warranty will cover expensive engine stuff but claim 800+ is not too much? even the mechanics near and far, (i called them), along with many others online suffering my same dilemma said this engine mount is super common for the odysseys to break. its so hard to afford a car anymore, but people are working so hard to save and others to fix their credit just to barely afford a used one,but to purchase a 3000$ warranty that is useless in this very expensive case ( 800) just for 2 of the mounts and right away. i babied the car. now i have to use grocery money that feeds my family to try and pay for this obvious flaw that honda already knew and knows about. please, i beg you to read online. one simple google will show i am not alone in this engine mount struggle with honda. please don't let what could be a great car company make this terrible choice repeatedly when even their mechanics know it is a constant problem and wrong. i can't afford to make these fixes right now and if i dont get the loan, since i just maxed out purchasing the warranty....i lose my engine on the road with my children in the car ! god forbid.

After take off from a red light vehicle started to shake and vibrate uncontrollably which caused me to quickly apply the brake and pull off the road. took it to a reputable mechanic who discovered that rear mounts are bad an estimated $1200 repair. honda really should recall for this i shouldn't have to shove out money for something that after research i found to be a highly reported problem on these model years. *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 honda odyssey. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, there was an abnormal vibration coming from the engine compartment. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician diagnosed that the motor mounts failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle had not been repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 146,000.

Motor mounts failed. that should not happen with an 8 year old car. van shook bad enough where i had to pull over because i thought i had a flat tire or something. i didn't panic but it scared me enough where i could see somebody having a accident because of it. honda wants $1300 to replace, that's not right. should be a recall. *tt

We took our van in for servicing and complained to the honda service representative that we have been experiencing vehicle vibrations that became worse during regular highway speeds when the variable cylinder management (vcm) system shifted from 6 to 4 cylinders and back again. we also started experiencing a distinct "clunk" sound during our vacation trip in late june. the honda dealership inspected the vehicle and discovered that three motor mounts ("front, rear and side motor mounts") had failed and needed replacing. the repairs were made, as well as an oil/filter change, and vehicle multi-point inspection. the subtotal cost for just the motor mount replacement parts and labor was $987.13. we discovered searching on the internet that this type of problem, especially with the rear motor, has been reported numerous times by other 2005, 2006, & 2007 honda odyssey exl & touring model owners. we are now seeking "goodwill consideration" for all, or most of the motor mount replacement cost, since learning that the odyssey hasn't been recalled for checks since the 1 december 2006 service bulletin 06-083. *tr

I am very disappointed with my honda odyssey. we have always had honda cars and have found them to be reliable until now. after reading all of the recalls on my personal vehicle, i can honestly say that 90% of the recalls or complaints have happened with my car as well. most frustrating is the engine motor mounts. brakes, tires, and vibration when reaching 60 miles per hour have always been an issue. after spending lots of money on these issues over the years, it seems that two broken engine motor mounts as well as one more cracked one could be the reason. my car doesn't seem safe and i can't believe that honda will not listen to the complaints of their customers. the more i talk with others, the more i realize how big of a problem this is. i hope that someone decides to take this issue further. it is a shame that a car manufacturer can not own up to something that is clearly their fault like inadequate engine mounts. we will be looking for another car, since mine now needs brakes and rotors again, tires again, and pricey engine mounts that ordinary people can't afford. from a sad and disappointed previous honda consumer. *tr

Brought the vehicle in for service due to a vibration. this was the 2nd time that i've brought it in for the same problem. last time the dealer claimed it was an alignment / wheel balance issue. this time they have claimed that 2 of the 4 engine mounts are broken. they also said that this is a common occurrence for honda odyssey's. research on various message boards and complaints on the nhtsa site do indicate that this happens frequently. if this is regular occurrence, why isn't this covered under a recall? *tr

Engine mounts on the car broke and need replacement. *tr

I have very low mileage and the transmission seems to be going out. also the rear main seal has blown. the mechanic says because of the transmission it affect the rear seal. i know honda has had several issues with its transmissions and they have helped some people and not others. i filed a claim and was denied yet it seems there are issues that are the same as others that have been helped. *tr

Was told by the dealer that my front engine mount is torn and needs to be replaced. after reading some information online, apparently, this is a known problem with honda odysseys (even low mileage vehicles). i was wondering why there has not been a recalled issued for honda odyssey. *tr

One owner of a 2005 honda odyssey. vehicle used to drive back and forth to work, general errands, occasional drive out of town. within the past couple of months, my wife noticed severe shaking of steering wheel when accelerating at 65 mph. vehicle taken to shop, had vehicle inspected: usual tire rotation, alignment, balancing performed; however problem persisted, and replaced two new tires. took vehicle back to same shop, alignment and balancing re-done; however, problem persisted. took vehicle to different shop--purchased 4 new tires, and had alignment and balancing performed once again; however, problem persisted. had tires replaced and alignment and balancing performed yet again; however, problem persists. advised by shop manager that he is 95% sure based on driving test that motor mounts are in need of replacement. it is my opinion that the motor mounts are prematurely failing, and thus deemed to be faulty, and that they should be replaced by honda a their expense. too many other honda odyssey owners with same issue, and expensive repairs. *tr

Today i took my car into the honda dealership service department. i was told that my front and side engine mounts were broken. i was stunned because my minivan is only 8 years old bought brand new. i only drive the van under normal driving conditions to and from school activities for my kids. it seems to me a substantial car part such as the engine mounts should not be breaking at 87,000 miles. subsequently, i have talked to a few friends that have had a similar problem with their odyssey and i searched this problem online and discovered a large number of car forums noting they had similar engine mount problems with their honda odysseys that were under 100,000 miles. it seems to me there must be some sort of defect or poor quality control of these engine mounts. i am formally registering a complaint over the quality of the engine mounts. thank you. *tr

Had our 05 odyssey ex-l in for standard servicing and was told rear and passenger side motor mounts required replacing (at a cost of $1200+)! van experiences noticeable noise and vibration as is shifts in and out of the eco phase of engine operation. i have never owned a vehicle that required motor mount replacement and after research, a service bulletin was apparently issued back in 2006 on this issue. this appears to be a widespread issue on the 2005 time frame odysseys. this is clearly an engineering issue and should be addressed thru honda via recall! *tr

Broken engine mount, right rear. took car in for torque converter recall. dealer did the software update and then advised that engine mount is broken. *tr

With no prior warning the vehicle began smoking out of the tail pipe. when pulled over, car was smoking under hood and all fluid poured out of the bottom. had car towed to mechanic. "blown or cracked" head gasket was his diagnosis. had car towed to shop to have repaired. after two weeks in the shop, the mechanic informed me that the car was still leaking antifreeze into the oil and that there is a porous leak somewhere in the engine. this car is not abused and i have regular oil changes with fully synthetic oil. this is just icing on the cake. i was excited to purchase this vehicle because honda has such a great name. in the summer of 2009 i had to repair the air conditioning ($900) and replace wheel bearings ($300). this was just a few months after i replaced the tires for the first time ($2000). (purchased vehicle used in 2008 w/ 35000 miles) in 2010 it was time for tires again (not even 20k miles later). i depaxed them for $2000 and am still running on this same set of tires. it seems that the engine problem is a defect with honda and from what i am reading, they will not take responsibility. i have not contacted honda in any way but was curious if it would matter. *tr

I was returning home and after driving on the freeway for approximately 45 minutes of driving at approximately 65 mph i heard a pop under the hood of my van and began to see smoke. i was unable to accelerate and had to turn on my hazard lights and pull off the freeway at the next exit. upon taking my vehicle to my mechanic, i was told my transmission had failed. *tr
