We have classified the 50 complaints from 2005 Honda Odyssey about ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING into the following categories.
One morning as we were started up the engine i noticed a somewhat loud noise as is the muffler had a hole in it. i drove it for awhile and noticed at this point that the noise was heard as we accelerated and when the car went into eco mode. i had stood outside of the vehicle while my wife drove away but did not notice any noise. thought this was strange. i took it to the honda dealer on a recall, fuel pump, and asked for them to look under it. they reported that it was the motor mount that was worn down. i see that honda odyssey, 2005 (our year model) through 2007 has this problem. is there any type of action that can be taken to have honda repair this incident without the cost coming from me. *tr
We were driving along 101 in the afternoon, turned on the ac, it started to blow out hot air, really hot air. have a mechanic checked on it, we were told that the condenser broke, a/c defects. found lots of honda owners have the problem. *tr
Transmission trouble happens when first started in the morning. has shifting problems at every speed. will never go into top gear until vehicle has warmed up, is turned off, and turned back on. then shifts normally. replacing with new ecm (engine control module) did not fix. was told to replace the mounts too, did not fix either. *tr
I purchase this vehicle new from dealer with minimal problems until about 85,000 mile when my wife was driving the vehicle on the highway at 65 mph the vehicle started to shake uncontrollably and she was barely able to get to the shoulder of the road. i drove the vehicle for two day and could not replicate this problem i had the tires balanced to ensure that this was not the issue. my sister-in-law drove the car and the problem happened again to her, she was very concerned because of the way the vehicle shakes uncontrollably at 65 mph. i then started to investigate this problem to find many articles on how the rear motor mount fails on vehicles with as little as 50,000 miles. the dealer states this is a drivability issue and the vehicle will be fine with a new motor mount at the tune of $700. i have owned many vehicles and never had a motor mount issue. due to the fact that this vehicle has a front wheel drive system when the mount fails the engine does not just rise in the engine compartment but begins to vibrate with the vehicles tires in motion. *tr
Acceleration to 65-68mph up to approximately 73-75mph the van's front wheels enter a mild to fairly strong, alarming, shimmy felt distinctly and synchronized through the steering wheel. we had just recently purchased this van 2 months prior and ironically had 2 brand new yokohama tires on the front rims. we took a trip from midwest to up and along the eastern seaboard. symptoms initially reasonable got stronger but appeared at the slower end of the range mentioned above. now it has gotten aggressively worse to the point you'd think i'd need new tires, but they are in good shape with lots of meat on the treads still. i have read many blogs now that indicate very bad design on electronic motor mounts have caused this and con concur with the general populous of 2005 honda odyssey mini-van owners out there that this is a critical fix that needs to be implemented by honda. sincerely, [xxx] 11/2/14. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Van vibrates uncontrollably because of defective electronic motor mounts, which cost thousands of dollars to replace, and causes handling problems which could result in a crash. *tr
Steering wheel severe vibrations while driving on highway at 50 up to 70 mph went to auto mechanic and replaced 2 engine mounts ($1113 total). *tr
Had to replace 3 engine mounts in 2 months after 80,000 miles - van is used for suburban driving. *tr
2005 honda odyssey. consumer writes in regards to manifold heat shields replacement *tgw the consumer stated during a service visit at the dealer, he was informed the manifold heat shields needed to be replaced, because the screws holding them on were rusting. the consumer stated no one could answer him, as to why stainless steel screws were not used.
Broken motor mounts, it seems to be a widespread and an expensive problem. *tr
I own a 2005 honda odyssey ex-l. had vehicle in the dealership today for virginia state vehicle inspection and the vehicle failed due to a broken front engine mount. vehicle has 105,000 miles on it and is only 5,000 miles out of extended warranty. this appears to be common problem as seen from other posts on the internet ...so much so that the dealer certainly was aware of it to find in less than a 5 minute look at the vehicle without a driveability complaint by me. nhtsa should investigate this common safety failure mode for the honda odyssey. costs to repair totaled $1002.14 ($689.64 parts and $312.50 labor) to repair this safety issue found during state safety inspection. *tr
I just took my car in for the master cylinder recall to the dealer. after inspecting the car the dealer has found and diagnosed a fail status on front engine and right engine mounts. the dealer is quoting approximately $700.00 to replace these broken mounts. after doing an internet search on the issue with these cars, i find that this problem is prevalent in honda odyssey 2005 and greater models. honda corporation should recall and repair these issue. i am surprised of how many recalls i have gotten on this odyssey, i own other honda's and love honda quality. please recall and fix this issue. *tr
Broken engine mount(s). general highway driving. *tr
Brought in my 2005 odyssey for annual inspection in march 2012 and was informed that both front and rear engine mounts were broken. honda dealership indicated this was a common occurrence with the v6 honda vehicles, and is a safety issue. odyssey was repaired at a cost of $830+tax. i researched on-line, and confirmed that it is indeed a common occurrence, as there were numerous postings with the same issue. i took the recommendation of the dealership and contacted the honda corporation. person who took the call assigned a case number, and indicated that i may be eligible for reimbursement. the person who followed up 1 week later indicated that this is normal wear and tear, and therefore honda will not reimburse any amount. they indicated that the engine mounts are expected to wear out between 80 and 100k miles. i have owned several other vehicles, and none ever had this same issue. i believe this to be a design defect which honda needs to take ownership for, and perform a recall for repairs. *tr
I have a 2005 honda odyssey ex 3.5l vtec with less than 46k miles on it... when i took to the dealership for 15k mile service today, they noticed that my front engine mount had broken and told me to get it replaced right away and they said it would cost me $500 (labor and parts). this has never happened to me on any of my other cars and i think this is a serious design flaw by honda. when i searched online, i found several people with the same complaints and many of them had the rear and side mounts broken too which costs even more to fix... honda needs to acknowledge this as an engineering design issue and recall the vans and get them fixed for free. *tr
Front and side motor mount. this will be second replacement of front mm. the first replacement was aprox. 500 miles and under warranty. *tr
Engine mounts are bad and the engine shakes and vibrates. the bad mounts allow the engine to move and is a safety issue. seems like a many odysseys have this issue and is quite common to find on the internet. *tr

My a/c system failed much like the complaint descriptions you see below. first honda of texas quoted me $850-$1,185 to fix it depending on whether i wanted to replace the entire compressor or try a temporary fix with some components (clutch & coil). as a result, i will do the following: 1-make my displeasure known to first texas honda - done but will escalate 2-research the issue - in process 3-file a goodwill claim with honda - done & rejected 4-speak with the service manager and general manager or owner of first texas honda 5-file a complaint with honda of america 6-file a complaint with the department of transportation, nhsta - doing now 7-post complaints on numerous websites 8-inform all people i know looking for a honda to check out the actual reliability on a number of honda vehicles that goes unknown to most of the general public 9-stand on the public sidewalk outside first texas honda with a sign that states "do not buy a honda, ask me why!" - tomorrow 10-other actions tbd the remedies i seek: 1-fix my a/c 2-add a protective grill so i don't encounter multiple failures as some honda customers have endured 3-address other recall items such as airbag sensor, etc.... *tr
A/c compressor damaged by rock due to poor design of front grill etc. compressor needs replaced. need to purchase after market guard to protect new compressor. *kb
As i was driving alone around 30 miles per hour my air condition was blowing cold air and all of a sudden out of no where it started blowing hot air and i thought i may need some freon, but since it was close to the end of summer last year i figured i could hold on until summer of this year. i finally took it in to have it recharged and was told that my air compressor was not working. there was no sign at all and i am wondering why all of a sudden it just stop working. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 honda odyssey. the contact stated that while having the vehicle serviced by an authorized dealer for routine maintenance, he was informed that the motor mounts were defective and needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileages were 108,000. the vin was unavailable. updated 09/20/2011 *ln
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 honda odyssey. while the contact was driving approximately 25 mph, the engine warning light illuminated on the instrument panel until the engine was turned off. in addition, the engine revved and the engine power was extremely low. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnostic testing. the technician stated that the timing belt jumped time and the head gasket valves were bent. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the problem. the failure mileage was 149,247.
A/c unit stops working. a/c clutch and condenser is damaged. *tr
1. normal usage of our 05 honda odyssey. transport for wife and two young children. in other words typical mini van easy driving. since last oil change around 90k miles notice seldom, random vibrations. 2. honda service tells me rear motor mount has failed and will cause drive train and stability issues if not fixed at a cost of about $900 per mount. dealer tells me this is a common problem with the odyssey yet honda has not recalled or offered any assistance other than taking all my money. 3. haven't corrected/replaced the faulty motor mount yet due to lack of funds and need to research this issue first. from what the dealer tells me and what i'm finding all over the internet this is a very wide spread problem with these failing honda odyssey motor mounts. fearful for the safety of my family while driving this odyssey should the other mounts and or drive train malfunction as a result of these defective motor mounts. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 honda odyssey. the contact took his vehicle to the dealer to be repaired where he was informed that his engine mounts were cracked and needed to be replaced. the manufacturer advised the contact that since the engine mounts were made of rubber that the wear and tear was normal. a complaint was registered with the manufacturer. no repairs were performed. the current and failure mileage was 54,000. updated 04/07/11 *bf updated 1/13/2012 *ln *tr
Odyssey had great vibration through steering wheel and through body of car. vibration varied depending on speed. this could of caused a tragic accident. diagnosis was failure of rear and side motor mounts for the second time in 20 months. poor design of these mounts fail prematurely and cause vibration and handling errors which could have tragic consequences.
The vehicle engine is shutting off with no warning. there have been approximately 6 instances of the vehicle being operated and then the engine will cut off. the first incident occurred in a parking lot when in reverse. there have been 3 incidents at low speed, while making turns, and 2 incidents while traveling at speed (one at 40 mph and one at 70 mph). the vehicle has been taken to the dealer on 3 occasions but the dealer has been unable or unwilling to address the issue because there are no codes sent to the on-board computer. the most recent incident on 3/6/2011 was while traveling at 70 mph on the interstate highway. we referred the service writer to nhtsa campaign id numbers 05v132000 and 07v097000 but he was unwilling to consider that our issue was related to either of these previously noted failures.
Failure of front, side and rear engine mounts. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 honda odyssey. the contact stated there was a noise coming from the front of the vehicle while driving 35 mph. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated the rear motor mount needed to be replaced. there were no recalls or warranty on the vehicle. the manufacturer was contacted who offered no assistance. the failure mileage was 63,000.
Had to replace a front motor mount in my 2005 honda odyssey. my mechanic indicated that he contacted a honda dealer and they were out of the part because there were several odyssey's with the same problem. i didn't know how many complaints needed to be launched before a recall notice would be considered. i wanted my vehicle noted since i did not go to a honda dealer. *tr
We have a 2005 honda odyssey w/less than 65k miles on it and just had to replace both the rear and side motor mounts. the repair bill was $1041.65 plus the labor to diagnose this issue both by leith and bayleaf. the cracked rear motor mount noticed by leith honda on capital rd. in raleigh, nc. they quoted close to $900 for just the rear motor mount replacement, and they said that the other motor mounts could be broken but that they would have to take the motor out to see. we had bayleaf tire and auto repair it because they were recommended to us and their quote was lower. they found that the side motor mount was broken as well. chris of bayleaf said that they have had odysseys around the same model year come in for the same issue and had called honda to tell them about the issue. i have seen plenty of evidence online that this is a design flaw in the motor mounts related to the eco mode (dropping from 4 to 3 cylinders to save fuel) being instituted in the odysseys in the mid-2000's without a corresponding change to the design of the motor mounts which could not handle the additional vibration. here are just a few of the many others complaining about the same issue: http://www.google.com/search?q=honda+engine+mount+design+flaw http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/off-topic-discussion/honda-odyssey-engine-mounts/30508/page1/ http://action.publicbroadcasting.net/cartalk/posts/list/1560611.page our car may have not set on fire like a rear-ended pinto, but there is no telling what additional damage has occurred that we'll have to pay for in the future because of this apparent design flaw. honda should recall all motor mounts with this flaw and should compensate owners for repairs related to the apparent motor mount design flaw in the odyssey. *tr
The air conditioning began blowing warm air on my 2005 honda odyssey ex-l last fall. i had the local honda dealer perform an inspection, and he stated that i had a hole in my air conditioning condenser that must have been due to a rock. i believe this problem is a design problem, which honda will not admit to or repair at their cost. the 2005 odyssey has little protection against road debris from their new grill designs. honda should recall these cars and provide protective shielding. *tr
Excessive oil consumption noticed at 85,000 mile oil change, approx 1/2 quart per 1000 miles dissapearing. no noticable smoke, nothing on driveway. loss of this much oil between maintenance cycles could cause engine sieze resulting in accident. service/manufacturer claim this level of consumption is "normal". *tt
I own a 2005 honda odyssey. sept 2009 my ac abruptly stopped working (blowing cold air) i took it to the dealership. i also have an extended warranty on the car. the dealer told me it was a fluke, chance happening that a rock must have entered my condenser through the front grill and caused a hole in the condenser. they said it was not covered under warranty and it would cost approx $800 to repair because the condenser has to be replaced. i then paid to have it repaired only to have the problem happen again on 8/21/10. not even a year later. i do not drive on dirt roads and avoid construction. this time i searched the internet for similar stories. i found thousands of threads of others with honda odyssey's complaining of the same problem. i feel it is a manufacturer's design defect that allows rocks or other such items to penetrate the condenser. this is a very expensive repair. there are aftermarket grills to be placed on the front of the car to eliminate the problem which is yet an additional expense and changes the look of the front of the car. i think a recall is in order to fix this problem. *tr
We were informed that our 2005 honda had a damaged/broken rear engine mount. additionally, we were told by the honda service writer that this if from normal driving wear and tear, such as shifting from reverse to drive, acceleration and the transmission shifting. it certainly seems af if honda terribly under engineered this part. there activities are part of normal driving. our van has 62,xxx miles on it and used mostly for suburban driving, and not exceeding the recommended driving conditions from honda. the dealer wants to charge $850 for the one mount. clearly honda should recognize the issue and replace these items, at their expense, for defective parts. *tr
Air conditioner stopped working on 2005 honda odyssey. took in for repair and were told that it was caused by "road debris" hitting the compressor and puncturing it. not covered under extended warranty that we purchased in the event that something would go wrong with the vehicle. this is a known problem with these vans, and there is a way to fix the problem by covering the are with a mesh screen, but honda is unwilling to help in any way. it seems that it is reasonable to expect that you could drive on the road where there are rocks without it causing the compressor to be punctured. i am also concerned with the environmental safety issue of the chemicals being released onto the roads due to a faulty design on honda's part. honda needs to fix this problem. *tr
We own a 2005 honda odyssey, which was purchased in july of 2005. we started having problems with it in april of 2008. first the catalytic converter went out, then there was an oil consumption problem. we had many oil changes at the dealership and faithfully changed the oil when the computer in the car told us to. but then, it would dump two quarts of oil without any notice. for instance, on may 23rd, 2010, we had a oil change at the honda dealer we had purchased the vehicle from, in anticipation of a 400 mile trip. the car started acting up on our way there and we ended up spending the majority of june 14th sitting in a dealership. we left the dealership and almost made it home before the car started acting up again. we limped into the driveway, but it required towing to the honda dealer in santa cruz, ca for more repairs. they accused us of not maintaining the car because it was two quarts low, yet we checked the oil before it was towed to the dealership and it was full in our driveway. the dealer said it was because we checked the oil while it was off. it wasn't even driven in between until the dealer did diagnostic on it. then they told us all cars need a value adjustment at 80,000 miles. we have spoken repeatedly with honda of america and honda care and they have repeatedly acted surprised with our problems. they deny that they know or suspect that there is a problem, yet a search on the internet reveals many pages of complaints about several models of honda cars with oil consumption problems. *kb
Issue: design flaw in 2005 honda odyssey exl nav res which exposes the vehicles air conditioner condenser to unnecessary puncture damage from common street debris allowing dangerous freon gases to escape to damage the environment and provide great financial hardship to the vehicle owner. common issue experienced by many of the exact same vehicle owners. this is a serious environmental issue that needs to be resolved by honda as well as reimbursement for repairs and prevention steps taken by consumers to protect vehicles from future damage. my honda had just experienced this issue and now all the freon released unnecessarily into the atmosphere and we are stuck with a $1000 repair and the vehicle is then still easily susceptible to future damage. i would like to file a formal complaint against honda for this serious issue environmentally damage issue caused by their design flaw which easily exposes the air conditioning condenser to unnecessary damage and great financial hardship to the vehicle owner. *tr
Premature wear out of engine motor mounts in the honda odyssey. i have a 2005 model and there are numerous complaints on the web concerning this issue. the technician & svc writer at the dealership even acknowledged this was a known problem in this vehicle. less than 6 months ago i had 3 out of 4 engine mounts that were broken and needed replacing the front and sides which was covered under my extended warranty with a deductible i had to pay. now 6 months later the rear mount has gone bad and now requires replacing. i advised the dealership when they replaced the other 3 this one should have been replaced as well since they knew it was a known problem & would eventually wear out soon which it has now done and prematurely. my extended warranty will cover it once again but i have to pay another deductible. just like a dentist when he has to remove 3 wisdom teeth, the 4th one is still good but he will suggest having it removed as well at that time. same thing should have happened in this case, especially since it is a well known defect - please google " defective motor or engine mounts in honda odyssey ) and you will see what i mean. *tr
2005 honda odyssey minivan with 55,000 miles. engine mount failure. cost is $836 to repair. per review of cartalk.com message boards, this appears to be a very common problem at about 55k to 65k miles. *tr
Strong vibration felt in passenger compartment and steering wheel when driving at 40 to 45 mph. there was a droning noise as well. this has been an issue since 2010, but identified by dealer service advisor only in feb 2014. quoted 800 dollars to replace both front engine mounts. also identified rear engine mount to be close to needing replacement. called honda customer service asking for assistance in replacing the engine mounts. we just replaced catalytic converters due to diagnostic code p0420 two months ago for 800 dollars. honda's representative (his name is [xxx] refused to assist in any way. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
A/c condenser punctured by road debris for third time in 5 years. design flaw; condenser has no protection behind grill. expensive, non-warrantied item and repair! *tr
Dear safecar.gov: i am an owner of a 2005 honda odyssey van. i have experienced sudden engine stalling and highway speed dropped to below 15 mph on my van since january, 2010. it has happened four times. i have worked with honda dealers and honda car for over eight months, from jan 2010 to aug 2010 without success. i then went to another honda dealer and finally able to find the problem: the 2005 odyssey van is the first model and year honda has put the new v6 engine with three cylinders shutting off during cruising speed to save gas, which makes sense. however, because of the temperature difference between the cylinders, the idling cylinders begin to burn oil on the cylinder rings. and there is no ?low oil? warning sensor from the car, but has a ?low oil pressure warning?. however, the ?low oil pressure? will only kicks on with the car engine starts to stall. it was very dangerous to have my van staff from highway speed to less then 15 mph in a matter of couple seconds. it has happened four times from january, 2010 to may, 2010. i have all the service records and descriptions. honda has been denying any problem until they limited release a new software in january, 2011 to periodically fire the idle cylinders to minimize temperature difference between the cylinders so that they will not burn motor oil. however, honda has not done a ?recall? on this safety issue (the engine stalling at high speed when oil pressure is too low due to motor oil burning). the dealer service manager told me that honda is reluctant to conduct such safety recall, they are afraid that with firing up the idled cylinders; they may fail the epa mileage claims. all the post 2005 v6 with ?econ? mode to save gas models will have this problems once the cars are driven, let say over 70,000 miles. it will take a few years of motor oil burning before the oil level is low enough to trigger the low oil pressure sensor and stalls the engine. please look into this issue and feel free to contact. *tr
Ref: 2005 honda odyssey engineer computer malfunction ' dangerous safety issue 2005 odyssey touring model 1) let's start with what has happened to this odyssey engine computer, or engine warning light last three years, two problems so far: a little over one year after i got this odyssey, the yellow engine light started to come on. took it to diamond bar honda, they just reset the light without doing any checking; they told me this is honda imposed standard procedure. another few months went by, the engine light came on again. this time honda care finally authorized the part replacement. 2) i thought things were ok not until the 'engine' light came on again, this time with big amber message stating 'inspect vsa' also. i stopped and restarted the engine, the light went off. on the second day, while i was driving at i-60, suddenly with no warning, both 'engine' and 'inspect vsa' came on again. and the car started to slow down considerably on the freeway. the vehicle slowed down to less than 20 mph with did not response to the gas pedal. i had to immediately pull my car to right side shoulder, almost rear ended by a semi-truck. this is absolutely down right dangerous and un-safe. i could have been seriously injured by this from driving at 65 mph and slowed to <20 mph in few seconds!! however, this is no longer 'honda dragging your feet and save cost issue'. this is a serious product safety issue now! with this letter, i am officially putting honda on notice on this 'seriously safety problem / defect'. i told my wife and will inform my attorney that in case i get rear ended on the road, this engine stalling will be the cause of the accident. *tw
I have a 2005 honda odyssey, only 4 years old and the dealer is telling me i need 3 engine mounts replaced, that they are a wear and tear item, doesn't sound right. i also need 2 compliance arm bushings and a radiator which was punctured needs to be replaced. i would like to know how engine mounts needs to be replaced within 4 years; there has got to be something wrong. *tr
2005 honda odyssey has a problem with the engine mounts. *nj the dealer informed the consumer of the risk involved if the engine mounts were not replaced. *jb
I own a 2005 honda odyssey... i had a full failure in the a/c clutch or compressor system. i have seen an enormous amount of customer complaints at how honda has denied responsibility for a design defect and calls the usual break down as a rock -->where other reputable businesses (goodyear) call it a basic failure. i have never owned a vehicle that is only 4 yrs old -- bought 2 yrs used -- that has a full a/c system failure of this type -- unusual and uncalled for... additionally parts and equipment are understocked or unavailable --> repairs will cost me $1600 in parts and additional $400 for repairs.. ridiculous on a 4 yr old car... and uncalled for at its current age. no rough driving -- no rough usage -- family car used for family travel only... now out of commission for nearly a week while awaiting parts... on a common problem as this parts should be more readily available but due to the lack of acknowledgment by the honda corp... we have a shortage on the market that they are profiting from at a probable enormous rate. *tr
