We have classified the 81 complaints from 2005 Honda Odyssey about STEERING into the following categories.
The paint is chipped off the car slowly , and the electronic part of the car acting weird, the daisy door some times work automatically and some times not
Power steering does not work under 1000 rpms. passenger airbag is not functioning.
Purchased my van used in 2012. it had a steering issue but i was new to the feel of honda handling and thought it was ok and normal. i have had increasing issues with my capability to steer. there was an extended warranty recall on the power steering pump and reservoir but the previous owner of my van did not have it serviced. i called honda and they said it is passed warranty and cannot absorb the cost of the repair. i say, that since the problem was never fixed while under warranty, it should be fixed now because honda new about the problem while the time frame still obligated them to fix the problem. i am having difficulty steering my van, turning the van, with children in it, and so this is a safety issue that needs attention because it was not addressed and fixed when honda should have fixed it.
Airbag light goes on and off while driving. power steering fluid leakage and causing difficulty in maneuvering vehicle.
Driving through a local park with 3 speed tables, after crossing the 3rd table i heard a clunk from the engine on the passenger side, lost the power steering and the check charging system light came on. i had to keep driving as there was no safe place to stop. i drove slowly without power steering, the clunking contunied until something broke free and i noted it's location on the road in the rear view mirror. i was able to get back to the place within 30 mins so the part was still there. it was a metal ring with grooves on the outside, looked like a belt went on it. i got it to a shop and they told me the harmonic balancer was gone and that it would need to be replaced. driving down the road and loosing steering is a big safety issue, and needs to be looked into by honda.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 honda odyssey. the contact stated that while driving, the steering wheel was tight and the serpentine belt fractured. in addition, the bolts fractured associated with the suspension pulleys more than twice causing a failure. the vehicle was towed more than once and taken to an independent mechanic a third time, who replaced the serpentine belt, the bolts and the pulleys. the independent mechanic checked with the manufacturer on the oem parts that had been ordered and they stated that the bolts were newly designed but provided no resolution on why the bolts prematurely fractured three times. the independent mechanic repaired the vehicle. the contact was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 05v039000 (steering). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was not available.
Power steering stops working at slow speeds. usually when turning to park in a parking space or turning into a driveway.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 honda odyssey. the contact stated that while driving at 60 mph, the steering wheel shook violently and the check engine warning light illuminated. the failure recurred daily. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the catalytic converter needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 96,000. the vin was not available.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 honda odyssey. the contact stated that there was a random failure that progressed concerning the power steering. the vehicle shook excessively each time the failure occurred. the vehicle performed extensive diagnostic testing, but was unable to provide a specific remedy to prevent the failure. in addition, the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for a second opinion who diagnosed that the torque converter needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was notified of the failures and provided no specific recommended repair solution to the dealer. the approximate failure mileage was 126,607.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 honda odyssey. while driving approximately 25 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to turn without warning. the failure recurred each time the vehicle was driven. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and was diagnosed that the power steering pump needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 126,000.
The rear motor mount went bad causing a terrible vibration in the steering wheel due to the engine banging around. after some research i found out the rear motor mount was only added to this vehicle after honda decided to come out with the eco feature. the vcm engine cuts out cylinders when they are not needed causing the engine to vibrate so a rear motor mount was added to decrease the vibration. the motor mount is around $500 plus the cost of labor to repair. i don't have the $700 needed to repair my van so i will be double fisting the steering wheel until the remaining mounts fail causing my engine to fall out. hopefully no one will be injured during this incident because it's not a safety issue according to american honda. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 honda odyssey. the contact stated that while driving approximately 15 mph and making a turn, there was a loss of power steering without warning. the steering wheel became extremely hard to turn. the vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the road where the engine was turned off for a brief moment. upon restarting the vehicle it functioned normally. the failure recurred three times. the failure was neither diagnosed nor repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the defect. the approximate failure mileage was 126,000.
When maneuvering in low mileage areas, i.e. driveways, parking lots, my power steering pump does not assist well, if at all. the vehicle makes a noise similar to an rc car with a dying battery and the steering wheel is almost impossible for me to move. in order to get out of a parking space, it can take me up to 10 or so moves because i cannot get the wheel to turn properly. *tr
Steering wheel was not put together correctly can cause an accicent. *tr
Power steering does not work well at low speeds (i.e. parking and turning corners). vehicle is hard to turn and could result in crash. also, rear motor has failed, which could result in undesirable shifting of transmission. *tr
I was not aware that honda had a recall on the power steering pump. i have had this problem for over a year. my local dealer (autoparks honda, cary, nc) is telling me that the recall is over and the extended recall is over so they cannot fix it at no cost to me. i don't understand why honda will not replace the power steering pump when there was a recall on this part. it is still very hard to turn the steering wheel. i really like my odyssey and i would like to see honda stand behind their recalls. *tr
Steering wheel is shaking really bad and pulling to the right. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 honda odyssey. the contact stated that while driving the steering failed. the steering wheel became hard to turn. the contact was able to drive the vehicle home. the contact inspected vehicle and stated that the tensioner belt bolt failed. the contact stated that the tensioner belt bolt was previously replaced; however, the failure was not corrected. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure and current mileage was 224,000.
One owner of a 2005 honda odyssey. vehicle used to drive back and forth to work, general errands, occasional drive out of town. within the past couple of months, my wife noticed severe shaking of steering wheel when accelerating at 65 mph. vehicle taken to shop, had vehicle inspected: usual tire rotation, alignment, balancing performed; however problem persisted, and replaced two new tires. took vehicle back to same shop, alignment and balancing re-done; however, problem persisted. took vehicle to different shop--purchased 4 new tires, and had alignment and balancing performed once again; however, problem persisted. had tires replaced and alignment and balancing performed yet again; however, problem persists. advised by shop manager that he is 95% sure based on driving test that motor mounts are in need of replacement. it is my opinion that the motor mounts are prematurely failing, and thus deemed to be faulty, and that they should be replaced by honda a their expense. too many other honda odyssey owners with same issue, and expensive repairs. *tr
Big o euro tire tire tracking with longitudinal road contour changes causing the front of the vehicle to shift right or left. big o rep said it was an alignment issue. after alignment the tracking was only more pronounced. while passing a vehicle the tracking almost pulled my car into vehicle i was passing. *tr
Car is sometimes almost impossible to steer. has been reported to dealer numerous times. finally had the steering pump replaced for $271.77, this after they had replaced it previously under warranty. so have had three steering pumps in this car and sometimes cannot move the wheel enough to get out of parking spot or garage. local dealer refuses to address the problem. *tr
Vehicle has been exhibiting a very harsh shaking/vibration while in eco mode. this is distracting as well as uncomfortable. recently the vibration has gotten so bad, we can not see out of any of the mirrors as the shaking vibrates them to the point of complete uselessness. the worst part is that we just paid $2000 at a dealership to replace the rear motor mount and flush transmission again. we have had this van since 60k and serviced transmission four times now, replacing motor mount twice. this time, with no apparent effect. *tr
Recently noticed like the brakes are not released fully after the application resulting in a "flat tire feeling with noise" took the minivan for scheduled recall service. per service person, they replaced the caps of brake master cylinder. driving back home @ 70 miles, felt like the steering loosing control, stopped at the near by chevrolet service center: they didn't felt any major issues with the steering but felt like the service wasn't done as they said. all the dust was evenly there all over the master cylinder: all over the bonnet. i feel no change with the friction noise from the brakes: " a little worse?" how do i ensure that a genuine service was done? now i feel insecure to drive on this, like driving on black ices. the electronic system was rest last time, but not it is back to not working good: resulting with trouble with the a/c knob not working smoothly. *tr
Power steering very difficult to turn in cold weather. caused car to collide into another car because the steering did not work properly. *tr
Over a period of a few years the steering pump has been replaced three times and one more time for the prior owner. 4 steering pumps and once again the pump is failing. the car has less then 100000 miles on it and yet honda is failing to fix the steering pump that they said they were extending a 100000 mile warranty on. the pumps are all lemons and just continue to fail one after another. its ridiculous that 4 pumps have failed on the same car over a few years. obviously there is something more to this then a steering pump. *tr
I have owned my 2005 honda odyssey touring since it was new. i replaced the power steering pump at 34k miles. i have put 3 sets of tires on my minivan even though i rotate every other oil change. all done by the dealer. my van will loose steering at times when it is cold and makes a loud noise under the hood. in addition, the steering will shake when driving as well as when braking. i just replaced the tires which included a front-end alignment and tire balance. the shimmy, vibration and shaking back/forth is still there. the brakes and rotors have been cleared by dealer and they cannot figure out what is wrong. this has been an on going problem with my odyssey. the water pump started at 15k miles and each time i took it back they did not know the issue and changed the water pump at 34k miles. the tire shaking, vibrating and shimmy has been happening since 55k miles and the van now has 105k. i am tired of the problem. it has gotten so bad that i don't wan to slam on my brakes because the steering wheel starts to fail. this is a honda and is suppose to last. honda needs to stand behind this problem. as i search the web there are many honda owners with the same issue but honda will not do a recall. honda needs to understand that this is a safety issue. steering. people can die from this. in addition, honda needs to understand that many with these problems will be purchasing another van in the near future and won't buy a honda due the lack of attention to these matters. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 honda odyssey. the contact stated that the power steering tank exhibited a design flaw and was causing the power steering fluid to swirl around in the tank and exhibit an excessive noise from the engine. the contact took the vehicle into the dealer and was told that the failure was caused by a design flaw and was not covered under warranty. although the vehicle had been recalled in other countries for the failure, the manufacturer advised that the vehicle would not be recalled. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage and current mileages was 92,000.
I have a 2005 honda odyssey and have numerous time been close to an accident due to loosing steering. this has been an ongoing problem that started around 50k miles and continues. honda has refused to repair it. *tt
I owned my 2005 honda odyssey for 2.5 years when the power steering pump failed on my minivan. i paid to have it replaced. 29k miles later it failed again. honda has since redesigned the part. when this part fails the power steering is dramatically reduced making it virtually impossible to turn the wheel at slower speeds. *tr
2005 odyssey - power steering was getting difficult to manage - took to an independent shop and had power steering pump replaced at 49,000 miles. now at 79,000 miles the power steering turns off sporadically but will then be back on if you restart the van. *tr

Powering steering on 2005 honda odyssey minivan is extremely hard to steer at lower speeds. there is a serious issue with steering pump as evidenced by service bulletin 07-005. the steering wheel will make whining, buzzing and strange noises and eventually stop functioning. there should be a recall to fix this problem and not just a service bulletin as this is a known and common issue among 05-08 honda odyssey minivans. *tr
Steering shaking badly before a car is coming to stop (while slow down the car). *tr

Steering of honda odyssey (2005 exl)becomes very stiff and makes it very hard to maneuver specially at slow speed and after having driven it for a while. started happening after 40,000 miles just out of warranty and has progressively become stiffer and stiffer. i am worried that it can lead to accidents as it worsen further and starts becoming even stiffer. my wife primarily drives this car and she is started to have a hard time taking turns at slow speed. worried about it - i googled and found lots of other fellow odyssey drivers in the 2005 onwards model experiencing the same problem. some links are attached. http://www.justanswer.com/questions/245w1-after-driving-my-2005-odyssey-the-steering-becomes-very-stiff http://www.carcomplaints.com/honda/odyssey/2006/steering/stiffness_in_steering.shtml http://www.aboutautomobile.com/complaint/2005/honda/odyssey/steering http://www.carcomplaints.com/honda/odyssey/2006/steering/stiffness_in_steering.shtml http://www.aboutautomobile.com/complaint/2005/honda/odyssey/steering http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=utf-8&rlz=1t4gfrc_enus222us222&q=odyssey+2005+steering+is+stiff all honda owners would appreciate if nhtsa can investigate this as honda does not appear to be owning up to this design defect. please note we have not been an accident due to this so far (thank god). thank you. *tr
After approximately a one hour drive on the interstate, the steering got very heavy in the outlet store parking lot. my wife narrowly missed a row of cars at low speed (<5mph) as she pulled in, since she could not turn the wheel as the steering got extremely heavy. afterward, i tried some low speed manuevers and noticed extremely heavy steering. after it cooled off in a few hours, the steering seemed to be more normal. note this steering pump was changed about 1.5yrs ago since it was making alot of noise and vibrating. *tr
Honda has known of power steering issues on the 2005-2010 odysseys. my 2005 becomes difficult to turn at times and whines loudly. with the difficulty steering, it is a safety issue. honda service bulletin 07-005 addresses it, and mentions "goodwill" coverage, but most dealers insist on charging $700 to fix the issue (sometimes repeatedly). a recall should be issued. *tr
My 2005 honda odyssey has a failed power steering pump. the pump creates a loud whine while driving, more notable in colder weather. turning can become sluggish at times. it occurs every time we drive the van. i have a quote to repair the pump for $590 plus tax. i will be bringing it in to get repaired soon. *tr
2005 honda odyssey ex-l. steering wheel shakes/vibrates really hard at highway speeds. we got new michelin tires, got wheel alignment and balancing and still the problem exists. dealer keeps saying the vibrations are as per honda's specifications, not sure what that means. *tr
My 2005 honda odyssey had a loud whine when turning, after driving the vehicle for about an hour. turning was also sluggish at times. the dealer stated that it was a failed power steering pump and reservoir. the van has an extended warranty and so i was not charged for the replacement. *tr
Power steering failure when cold outside. has been occuring for several weeks when outside temerature is below approximately 40f degrees.
I have a 2005 honda odyssey touring with 100,000 miles on it. i paid about 50% of the cost to replace the power steering pump at around 50-60k miles on the car. right now at 100k miles, i'm currently running on my 3rd set of power steering pump and the pump is acting up on me again after only 10k miles on it. so each pump lasted average of 15,000 miles. and the warranty is too short that whenever my pump goes out, i exceeded my warranty only about 3-4k miles, which honda denies to cover the whole thing. *tr
I have a 2005 honda odyssey with 34,000 miles on it. the left rear shock is blown and needs replaced. a vehicle with such low mileage should not have a blown shock. the power steering has problems as well. after the van has been running for 15-20 minutes the power steering makes loud noise during turns and when parking, the power steering becomes very difficult to turn. i have contacted honda dealer and they are not willing to cover the costs for either repair since i'm past the 36,000 mile or 3years warranty period. from what i have researched, the steering issue is a big problem. why hasn't this been a recall issue!!!! it's very dangerous to continue having this problem. *tr
2005 honda odyssey - power steering failed. it got very difficult to turn the wheel. it started back in nov.2009 and gradually got worse by january 2010. we took it into the honda dealership and they repaired it for $700-parts replaced. it got so difficult to turn the wheel i pulled a muscle in my chest. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 honda odyssey. the contact stated while driving 5 mph the steering wheel became increasingly hard to turn. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer, but the manufacturer was contacted. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 90,000, and the current mileage was 110,000.
Power steering failed in honda odyssey 2005. heard intermittent grinding noises when steering, but noise goes away in warmer temperatures. had problems steering and took it to the honda dealership. cost me $650 to replace power steering pump and reservoir. the car only has 60,000 miles on it. i have never replaced a power steering pump in any car i have ever owned and i have one now that has 175,000 miles on it. this is very dangerous especially if it went out while driving. fortunately mine didn't but i could of had a serious wreck. *tr
Issues with power steering. when driving long distances a loud noise will start emitting from power steering. this has happened on multiple occasions over last five years. have taken my honda to at least two dealerships about problem. never diagnosed until recently. was told that power steering pump is defective. honda states no longer under warranty. very expensive repair. dealership will not help with cost. contacted honda corporate customer service and was offered no help with cost of repair. will no longer drive my honda any long distances. also have had brake and parking brake issues with this car over past five years. *tr
