Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2000 Honda Odyssey

Purchased vehicle used from private party with 45,000 miles on it. vehicle was well maintained by previous owner and i continued with all required maintenance per honda service manual. a slight bearing growl was audible for several thousand miles before failure at 55,000 miles. transmission began shifting hard from 1-2, and slowly on other shifts. took vehicle to reputable transmission shop and had it rebuilt at a cost $3100. evidently, honda has extended its warranty to 7 years/ 100,000 miles to vehicles whose vin # falls within the lot of those with abnormally high transmission failure rates. since my vehicle is classified as a 'grey market', it doesn't qualify to receive extended warranty coverage. but if this vehicle had stayed in canada, honda would've replaced it when it failed. or if this same vehicle had spent a year/ 12,000 miles in canada before it was transferred to the u.s., honda would've replaced the transmission. but they won't for me due to a technicality. how's that for customer non-service! to any reasonable person this is bull#@%*! any known factory defect should be warranted no matter where the vehicle is used or how it was originally sold. if honda seeks to claim superiority over other brands based on reliability and customer care they should stand behind their product and deal fairly with customers that have legitimate warranty claims and not hide behind some legal loophole they and other automakers probably had a hand in creating. since this problem is an obvious safety issue, i believe there should be a recall, not just a 'selective' warranty. *nm

Purchased used 2000 honda odyssey from honda dealership (366 ml). took great care of vehicle, at 80,309 ml transmission needed replacing. researched issue found that for the 2000 honda odysseys, honda acknowledged a manufacturer's defect with the transmissions used. my vehicle was of canadian origin however it was nonetheless affected by this particular flawed transmission as verified by my vin. in response to an acknowledged defective transmission used in the 2000 honda odysseys honda responds by extending warranties to 7yr/100,000 miles. however because my vehicle is a canadian model odyssey it doesn't matter to american honda that is was affected by the faulty transmission they will not honor any service to correct their acknowledged manufacturer's defect. the vehicle is registered/used in the us so honda of canada will not honor any service to correct the problem. there are numerous consumers in my same position- an acknowledged manufacturer defect specific to our 2000 honda odysseys yet for corporate reasons honda refuses to be accountable to us for something they have already taken responsibility for and have selectively provided remedy to correct. not extending the same recourse as was provided to all other 2000 honda odyssey owners in both canada and america has excluded a population of owners that are nonetheless affected. for honda to provide remedy to select 2000 honda odyssey owners and refuse remedy to a certain class of individuals is extremely irresponsible. this specific transmission defect is clearly a manufacturer/safety issue in that a defective transmission can severely impede the performance of a vehicle. honda has acknowledged the defect yet selectively provided certain vehicle owners recourse but failed to provide all. these defective vehicles abandoned by honda create safety concerns not only for the vehicle driver but also to anyone on the road with them. honda needs to take responsibility for all affected vehicles. *nm

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 honda odyssey. the contact stated that both of the sliding doors were experiencing numerous failures. the doors are supposed to automatically slide open whenever she presses the buttons or pulls on the handle. when she does this, the doors fail to open properly. occasionally, the doors do not open at all and will close halfway, forcing her to have to exit the driver's seat and close the door manually. the failure has since worsened. the rear driver's side sliding door was not working at all. the passenger side sliding door will not automatically close and must be opened or closed manually. both doors were replaced under warranty. the contact was unsure of the work performed on the doors at the time of service; however, the failures would immediately recur. the only way that the rear passengers could exit the vehicle was through the front passenger or driver's side door. the contact believes that in an event of a crash, the children would not be safe. the doors have not been replaced and only the passenger side sliding door is currently able to open. in addition, the transmission is failing and has been repaired at least three times. while driving, the contact noticed that the brake and tcm indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. when she reached 40 mph, the rpm dial began moving up and down randomly. she took the vehicle to the dealer, but they could not find any failures. a few days later while driving 40 mph, the vehicle shut off and was towed to the dealer. the dealer rebuilt the transmission; however, it failed again six months later. the transmission was replaced a second time, but failed again after a few weeks. the failure mileage was 74,614 and current mileage was 137,066.

Dt: just came to a stop and pushed the gas pedal to go and it was in reverse. the vehicle had 98,000 miles on it. vehicle did not hit anything. this happened on september 9, 2005. on september 8, 2005 put the vehicle in drive and on the freeway noticed it was in third gear. have not contacted the dealer yet. *ak

Honda replaced the transmission under a recall and it failed again 50,000 miles later. *tr

While driving at any speed transmission made a clanking noise. dealership repaired problem, but the problem recurred. *ak

I have honda odyssey 2000. transmission brake down. i took it to the honda authorized dealer and they said i need new transmission is the same problem as on honda odyssey 2002 and later model with transmission which they recalled to fix. i am wonder why they exclude 2000 model with the same problem. *nm

Transmission defect/extended warranty problem/pulsation of brakes when braking, slider doors sticking/loud buzzing sound (intermittent) *jb

When driving the vehicle at any speed, the check engine illuminated on the dashboard then the vehicle would jerk. the consumer had the vehicle towed to the dealer for inspection. the mechanic informed the owner that the transmission had failed. please provide any further details. *jb

While driving 45 mph transmission failed. as a result, consumer coasted to the side of the road. this failure interrupted the vehicle's movement with engine still running. dealer stated they will replace the part with a rebuilt transmission. *ak

2000 honda odyssey with transmission failure. consumer states that this is the second transmission that has been replaced in her van. the warranty for a remanufactured transmission is 36,000 miles or 3 years. *kb the engine mounts were bad and the threads to the oil pan screw were stripped. *jb

I have a 2000 honda odyssey. my first van was covered under the lemon law because of the transmission and other safety factors. my replacement van had the transmission replaced at 70,000 in 2004 because it went out. now my van has 150,000 miles and the transmission went out again. this will be the third transmission in my van. the dealer refuses to replace the transmission considering it only has 80,000 on the replaced transmission. when one purchases a vehicle they are trusting that they are purchasing a vehicle that will be reliable. i just want honda to be accountable for their defected parts. *tr

In december 2003, the transmission and catalytic converter went out on my 2000 honda odyssey mini van. the car is only three years old and had only 65,000 miles on it--too soon to need a new transmission. after some research, i discovered that honda has serious problems with their transmissions and the honda dealer i took it to admitted as much. to fix this known defect in their vehicles, honda has extended the warranty on transmissions on many of their cars including my year model and make. so the service department said that honda would replace my transmission for free. however, when they pulled up my vin i was given the unfortunate news that my car has a canadian vin--a supposed "grey market vehicle" and that honda voids the warranty on these vehicles. i had never even heard of a grey market vehicle. so even though my honda odyssey was made in the exact same canadian plant with the exact same sub standard transmission as the cars they are replacing transmissions on, honda refused to pay for my transmission. this is in my opinion a safety-related defect; when my transmission was slipping, my car was completely unreliable in acceleration. i was so afraid that i would pull out in front of someone or be turning and my car wouldn't go and they would crash into my van with my two small children in the back. thank god my husband and i were able to afford the $3200 bill for a new transmission so i didn't have to drive my unsafe vehicle more than 2 weeks (although that was too long if you ask me). but i know there are many people with these faulty transmissions who can't afford to get them fixed right away, so they just drive the car until they can afford a new one. it's a safety issue to have those people on the road. to me, honda should recall these transmissions; they are an obvious threat to everyone's safety on the road. thank you. *cb

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 honda odyssey. while parked, the contact heard a loud noise coming from the transmission. the vehicle would also shift irregularly when driving various speeds. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing where the technician advised that the transmission would have to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired but the failure continued after the repair. the contact stated that the transmission was replaced four times to no avail. the approximate failure mileage was 30,000.

This is the first incident that i have on record regarding the transmission not shifting properly. i have several service records with rick case honda in davie florida regarding the transmission. in 12/08 i had to replace my transmission cost 1298.00. i was never informed by honda that there were problems with the 2000 odyssey automatic transmission. on june 23 2010 while traveling from canada on i-95 the transmission blew with heavy thick black smoke which obscured my vision. thick black oil spewed everywhere and we were traveling through macon ga. the vehicle began hesitating and it stalled right in the middle of the heavy traffic on i-95. this could have been a disaster because another vehicle could have crashed right in back of us. i had my entire family in the car, my wife and 4 children ages 16,15,11,9. i was able to coast the car off of the ramp. we were greatly inconvenienced and had to stay in macon ga for two additional days and it cost me additional 525.00 to replace the transmission that i just replaced in dec 2008. honda never informed me about the 2000 odyssey transmission problems that they were aware of since sept 2002. in jan 2007 i complained yet again of transmission problems with the same dealership. on 11/26/11 the transmission failed in the middle of the turnpike which it began to smoke and spew oil. again this could have been a disaster because someone could have crashed in back of my vehicle. fortunately i was able to coast the car off the ramp at bird road and call aaa. the care is at rick case honda. this is a very serious problem. *tr

Shift lever moves out of park without keys in ignition. *la

Transmission failure: slipping and jerking during low speed after 30 minutes of driving. sudden acceleration and down shifting around 3rd gear. confirmed by dealership as faulty transmission assembly. not being covered by manufacturer's extended 7 year warranty since car was originally marketed for canada despite the fact that it was originally purchased at beaverton honda in oregon. *la

The van transmission sounded like it was delayed in engaging, then it suddenly lunges forward. had it checked out, tech said nothing was wrong with transmission. van has gotten progressively worse until now it slips constantly. since it had under 100,000 when it started doing this it should be covered by honda but they won't take responsibility even though they admit honda minivans consistently are being brought in for transmission problems. *jb

When driving from va to mi, going through mountains of pa, the transmission would down shift from 4th to 3rd. as i proceeded down long steep mountain grades, but only after i touch the brakes just a bit. this occurred about 3 times. thought something was wrong with transmission. then i figured it was an ingenious design in keeping the car within a reasonable speed. once i reached level ground and put my foot gently on the accelerator, the car upshifted to 4th and overdrive with no problems. i have had no problems with transmissions yet. yet! advice: drive in 3rd gear when driving around town. only put gear shift into 4th when you know you'll be driving at 50+ mph for an extended period of time. i too have heard the clattering in the engine bay when the engine runs at about 1500-1700 rpms, so i keep it in 3rd gear unless i'm driving on the highway. i have approximately 32000 miles on 2000 odyssey and no problems yet. i am the second owner. first owner bought 100,000 mile warranty from warranty direct upon purchase back in 2000, which was transferable to me when i bought it just after christmas 2002. *ph

Have a 2000 imported canadian odyssey ex. engine check light came on 54000 miles, took to the dealer, got fixed. from the next day the acceleratoin dropped and started hearing noise/vibration when the trans shifts from 1 to 2. called american honda, they said they can not do, since its a canadian vehicle. called canadian honda, they said the warranty is good only if its within canada. honda which is such a big company, should not play such cheap tactics with their customers. i am still trying to get some answer from honda.

The transmission leaked fluid excessively. the dealer diagnosed the transmission needed to be replaced. *nlm *ts *jb

Transmission hesitated gear 1 to 2 and shifted hard gear 2 to 3. transmission replaced with used transmission by dealer. covered under 3rd party warranty supplied by dealer. *nlm

2000 honda ody trans has failed for 3rd time. original went bad at 75k. complained about it 1st at 34k. dealer said found no probs. now at 75k we are on 3rd rebuilt trans to be put in next week. 1st 2 rebuilt ones didn't last 10 miles before same loud clunk in reverse started again. honda needs to be forced to replace this problem with new trans, not rebuilt one, and 3/36 warranty. i didn't pay top dollar for a car to have a 3 rebuilt trans by 75k. it is apparent that rebuilts aren't any better than original trans. the 100k extension of warranty is useless. honda calls it 'goodwill'. sounds more like willingful neglect & fraud. looking for someone who has filed class action lawsuit already.

The transmission blew. dealer notified. ph

We have had three transmission failures with this odyssey. two were replaced under warranty, the last failure occurred at 50k miles, so it was not covered by the 36k warranty. it is ridiculous that a vehicle could go through three transmissions in this amount of time. *tr

While trying to pull vehicle into reverse it makes a loud noise. this problem occurred without warning. dealer has been contacted. *nlm. *ak

Refund for transmission. *dt

This will be the 4th new transmission honda has installed in 2 years. when you talk to the dealer he tells us that he is replacing 2-3 transmissions a week. ph *nlm **dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut over to artemis**767678

There was a slight oil leak at the joint of the torque converter and transmission and the seals were replaced. when pulling from a stop sign, the consumer heard a clanking sound in the steering column, the dealer replaced the entire column, also there was a squeak coming form the rear suspension, the problem was determined to be a leak from the rear shock absorber.*ts *jb

I am familiar with a large number of complaints about this particular vehicle and would like the nhtsa to demand a recall of these vehicles. the dealers know about this problem, but are misleading consumers by denying any knowledge of such issues.this is a blatant misrepresentation of the truth, and the manufacturer along with the dealers are deceiving owners about the trans. problems. no safety defect listed. *ak

Transmission failed at 33000 miles causing the vehicle to lurch forward. nlm

Transmission started to clunk right after i purchased the vehicle (12/01) and the engine check light came on repeatedly starting in march 02. *ak

When parked on an incline vehicle will roll in either direction. vehicle will not hold in park. please provide any further information.*ak

I live in mexico but maybe if enough people complain, honda will take notice. my car is imported and manufactured in canada just as everyone else's. no safety defect listed. *ak

Vehicle was experiencing transmission problems and honda replaced the transmission with a rebuilt used transmission, consumer believes this problem is in addition to the many other problems they have had with this car. *yd

2000 honda odyssey minivan's transmission failed while driving. the van was purchased in november of 1999 and has 51,200 miles on it. the van has had all the recommended maintenance. a new vehicle with all the required maintenance and proper care should not have the transmission failing already. have talked with honda mechanic who says that 2000 v6 honda odyssey van's have a known transmission problem but honda motor company is not accepting responsibility or doing anything about it. mechanic also stated that dallas area honda dealerships are seeing more 2000 honda odysseys vans with failed transmissions. fay oia have also researched on your nhtsa and have found many other owners who have had failed transmissions on this make and model. we want honda to acknowledge the problem and fix the transmission and replace all 2000 v6 honda odyssey transmissions.*ak

Consumer stated the automatic transmission was replaced. *jg

Replaced solenoids in trans at 62000k then a week later replaced trans/torque convertor (500 out of pocket) with factory rebuild transmission 10,000 miles later at 72000 had to replace transmission again. i am concerned that it won't last and next time i will have to bear total costs. these transmission don't last. i am not the only one that has replaced transmission more than once with low mileage. feel that honda needs to replace with upgraded trans and further warranty up to 150k or life of ownership???*ak

Transmission slips into neutral when in the drive position while driving the vehicle. dealership is evaluating the problem but won't confirm yet (4 days now). i have become aware thru other odyssey owners that this is not an isolated problem with many transmissions going quickly or eventually (1999-2001 engine models). this should be recalled and replaced at no charge for the life of the vehicle by the auto maker. apparently, the replacements are "used/repaired" transmissions that also fail. *ak

The dealer replaced a solenoid the first time. three weeks later the same problems exists and is very unsafe to drive. th vehicle occasionally shifts out of drive into neutral.*ak

Transmission failed while driving. dealer "fixed" transmission per manufacturer's recommendation and specifications and it failed a second time one week after first repair. i did not have an accident, but i could have had i been accelerating to merge onto a highway or another situation when not getting into gear would be a danger.*ak

Dealer replaced transmission without question. *ak

Transmission is failing, unable to shift into lower gears, dangerous to drive.*ak

Transmission failed and was replaced. *slc

Steering column and indicator lights show that vehicle is in "r" but is actually in neutral when the gas pedal is used. has occurred on three occasions w/ 2 different drivers. this is especially hazardous when parked downhill. *ak

Middle of back door metal is fatigue. door metal is denting. contacted dealer, and dealer stated consumer was pushing on metal when closing door. *ak
