Recently reported STRUCTURE problems on 1999 Honda Odyssey

Driver side automatic sliding door unlatched while driving on interstate. i got a emergency tone telling me something was wrong, but no indication on the dash. i found a couple recalls for this problem and stopped by the local honda dealer (piazza), but they said the vin has no recalls and the recall is too old. i just bought the vehicle a month ago. this is a safety issue known by honda and even if it is happening only now, the dealer should repair at no cost to me.

Right rear power sliding door will not latch shut

1999 honda odyssey. both of driver's and passenger's side sliding doors would not latch properly and could not be secured because both latches broke off . the driver side sliding door plastic latch cracked and broke, and the one on the passenger side sliding door broke off and detached. both sliding doors can not be secured. it was discovered because the passenger sliding door can not be closed, lead me to inspect the driver side sliding door, and it showed that the latch has been cracked and broke, but it is still in place. it allows the door to close but not latch properly. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 honda odyssey. the contact stated that he attempted to open the side sliding door and the door opened partially before becoming stuck. the contact also stated that the vehicle failed to start. the vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection where they advised that the ignition switch needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the dealer also stated that they could not repair the door. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 166,000.

There was a recall back on 4/25/00 for the door latch assembly. the recall # was 00v119000. i'm having the same exact problem again with the door not closing all the way. i called hennessey honda in woodstock, ga and they told me that they didn't have that recall on record. then they went on to say that they won't fix it again. i checked the history of the vehicle recalls and don't see where this was done. why should i have to pay for this repair when it was already determined that it's a manufacturer defect? is there a time limit on how long honda will fix this repair for free? *kb

The passenger side sliding door on my 1999 honda odyssey has failed to open on many occasions and i didn't think of it as anything more than a nuisance. this time one of my children's fingers was caught in the door and we were unable to open the door either from the inside or the outside for several minutes until we got a passerby to force it open. his finger was significantly more damaged than if we had been able to immediately open the door, not to mention the panic and distress and being trapped. *tr

1. no known events leading to failure. 2. sliding doors fail to open/close. it has occurred several times. consequences include failure to exit the vehicle in an emergency 3. taken to dealer several times and parts replaced and failure occurs again. *tr

Honda odyssey power sliding door trouble. *tr

1999 honda odyssey rear power sliding door will not latch. *tr

I have an honda odyssey van 99' and one of the sliding doors when out first then the other a cple months later. i've been stuck with it jammed open and had to ride home like that w children in the car and taking a turn and one of the door slid open, next to my 3yr.old while i was driving, its done that several times. but now neither of the doors work, so the kids have to climb over the front seat to get in for months now. i've taken it to the honda place and they say its the motor in both doors which will be 900 dollars each to fix! i don't have that. why has this problem that is a reoccuring problem in alot of honda vans not been recalled!? *tr

Electric sliding door honda odyssey stays open refuses to close. *tr

I have honda odyssey 99. the power sliding door on the driver side does not open and close. the "sliding door light" is illuminated. *tr

1999 honda odyssey amongst other models that use the electronic sliding doors have a problem that also is very dangerous to the consumer. the safety hazards include doors not being secured, having to drive with door ajar and switch off so buzzer shuts off, should a person be involved in an accident the people in the back will be trapped in the vehicle. and the honda dealers refuse to recall the vehicle for repair. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 honda odyssey. the sliding door locks are failing. each time the vehicle drives over a bump, the door alarm sounds, warning that the doors are unlocked. the contact has to depress the door lock button located on the instrumental panel in order to keep the doors locked. the dealer stated that his vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 00v119000 (latches/locks/linkages:doors:latch). the vehicle will be taken to the dealer for repair. the current mileage was 12,000 and failure mileage was 11,200.

Every winter since we purchased our 1999 odyssey brand new, the power sliding doors would freeze and lock up. it will not work. since our odyssey is out of manufacturer's warranty, the cost to repair is very expensive - a dealer estimated $2000 just to fix one door. so we decided not to fix the sliding power doors and just open them manually instead. even in manual mode, they still freeze during winter. the dangerous part is that they open by itself even when the vehicle is in motion. i respectfully submit that this may be a serial defect. *tr

Both sliding doors are stuck, will not open or close. this seems to be an unsafe condition when carrying 6 children, as my wife often does. *tr

Sliding door always was defective from 2006. always not closing to the end. one slider door outside handle not working from 2006, probably cable broken inside of slider door. sliding door handle is lose. my wife not using slider door more than 10 years, because it stock and can't open at all. front door lock also not working correctly. also i want replace all air back in my mini van, i never receive any paper recall from dealer.

I bought my 1999 odyesse in march of 2004. i took my van to the honda dealership to find out why my driver's side sliding door was not closing completly. they told me that the latches and hinges needed to be replaced totalling $420. they checked my warranty and those parts were not covered. i told them i didn't have $420, to repair the door. one week later the other sliding door stopped closing all the way. i looked up the 1999 odyesse to find out if there were any recalls for this and there are plenty, but when i spoke with america honda they said that my vin number had no recalls. then i spoke with the honda dealership in town and they told me that the only recall for my vin was for the transmission. so, i believe there is a lot being covered up. i have four small children that are ride in this van everyday and from what i have read on this web-site my children are not safe with doors that can just come open when the vehicle is in motion.

Intermittently both sliding doors opened while driving the vehicle. dealership and manufacturer were notified. *ak

The front doors on this van do not have adequate "notches," for the door to rest when open. most doors are made in such a way that they can be fully and/or partially open and have the doors rest in a relatively secure state such that the door won't open or close suddenly. this is especially true if the vehicle in on a slight incline where gravity can cause the door to swing open and hit another car (as in a parking lot) or person; or close by itself and hit a passenger who might be entering or exiting. the doors on the 1999 odyssey just seem to sit at whatever position you set them to. there is a slight feel of a notch in the fully opened position, but it's not obvious and certainly not strong enough to counter any force that tries to move it. the problems i face is that my driveway has a slight incline. even the slightest tilt in the vehicle (nose up) will cause the doors to close by itself when let go. i have to constantly make sure that the kids are using the sliding doors (and they have their own set of problems as many other odyssey owners already know) when there's the potential for them to use the front doors to get in and out just to prevent the younger kids from getting hurt. and of course, i have to make sure i don't get caught myself if i step out and turn around to reach for something on the floor (for instance). recently, we had some moderately high winds and the doors blew shut with the car on level ground. i'm not talking hurricanes or even gale force winds; i'm talking the wind blowing harder than normal. these doors are dangerous; they should rest of notches like all other car doors. it shouldn't be hard to verify my claim ! *la

Problems with poor operating sliding doors. *mr the problem existed during 10 months of ownership. the dealer sprayed the doors with lubricant, placed blame on cold weather, the key was used, lock switch, rollers, user error and placed repair cost responsibility on the consumer. none of the attempts were successful. *sc *jb

The drivers side sliding door will not open manually or automatically because it thinks the agas cap dood is open. it's completly closed though.*ak

I bought a honda odyssey in september 1999 as a brand new vehicle. since then i have taken the vehicle to the dealer for evaluating a problem with the left side sliding passenger door. this happened on 3 occasions while the vehicle was under warranty and twice after warranty period. the problem recurs shortly after each visit. now the dealer wants me to pay for the repairs without any assurance that the problem would not recur. i need to know if this is a problem for other vehicle owners as well and what i can do about it. *jb

I have a 1999 honda odyssey minivan. the manual sliding doors stick in wet or snowy weather. sometimes you can get the doors open but it takes severla minutes. manyl times i have been unable to open either sliding door and have had to pull my kids over the front seats to get them out of the vehicle. it is a serious safety hazard when you cannot open the doors to get your children out of the vehicle. this problem is widespread on honda odysseys. my sister has a 2000 odyssey and pulled the entire handle off the door trying to get the door open. honda has 2 service bulletins detailing a fix for replacing the weatherstripping but they won't cover the cost for me because it is out of warranty. i feel this is a serious safety issue and that these doors should be recalled.

At 73,000 miles my transmission needs to be replaced. many other people have reported this problem. two incidents were cited in the los angeles times of catastrophic failures that could lead to serious accidents. this car is our family vehicle, i am scared of what might happen even if the transmission is replaced. several posts to the internet indicate that people have replaced the transmission up to three times over the life of the vehicle. i understand honda has issued a recall or extended the warranty on the 2000-2001 odysseys but will not being doing anything for the 1999 model. also, the locking actuator on the door of the vehicle has failed repeatedly. the alarm system will arm, but the door is not locked. when the door is then opened the alarm sounds. this has scared my children enough to make them run from the vehicle to the street. this problem appears to corrected now, but it took three tries. nlm

Latch assembly to power sliding door has failed, unable to close or lock door. dealer contacted.there was recall 00v119000; but this vehicle not included due to vin. *ak

Sliding door does not have pressure sensor. 7 year old thumb was stuck in door, and door didn't slide back to indicate that something was stuck in it. dealer contacted.*ak the vehicle?s doors detect only heavier pressure and could cause injuries to children?s hands. *yh

Consumer stated the sliding door will not shut properly, it keeps popping open. door ajar light is constantly on. cause is unknown. *ak the doors pop back out after closing, causing the ajar light to come on and alarm to sound, alarm fails if the vehicle is put in park or neutral. doors have been serviced, switches and latches have been replaced. *yh

Power sliding door will open unexpectedly during operation of vehicle. dealership informed consumer this vehicle was not included in any recall. previous owner had this problem examined by dealership. mechanics cleaned ground and slide for sliding door failing to effectively remedy the problem. please provide any additional information / documentation.*ak

In august the vehicle was taken to the dealer for the left sliding door not working properly. they advised it had a broken center roller and it was replaced (at a deductible cost 100). in november the dealer was contacted and advised the same door they worked on was beeping continuously (the chime for the door not latched), and that there was 1 occurrence of the door opening on the highway 1foot on it's own. the dealer looked it and advised it had a broken latch. over the next 2 weeks they were contacted 2 times for me to be advised it wasn't in yet. 3 weeks after the last visit to the dealer they said i could bring it in on friday 12/28. by this time the door had opened for the second time on it's own. they initially looked at the door and asked what was the problem--they were again advised of the problems. they replaced the door latch again at a deductible cost of 100. the mechanic advised they work on these all of the time and he felt they should get a better fix since it is safety related (mini-van, doors opening on own, children--didn't mix). the vehicle was purchased as a canadian model. vin [xxx], i have nhtsa recall campaign notice 00v119000 but was advised my vehicle didn't "need" that done. it didn't fall in the recall program---based on my 2 problems i feel it should. please let me know what i may do to see that this is fixed properly. i am thinking of selling the vehicle due to this safety problem but cannot in good conscience pass this only another person. thank you. Automatic sliding doors stops at 50% of travel. doors (left and right) will not close. doors appear to close but 'door open' alarm is activated. doors stuck in full open position.*ak

Sliding door window has shattered and is completely cracked. dealership has not examined vehicle to determine a reason for shattering. . *note: approximately in june 1999, rear windshield shattered and was replaced. reason given for that defect was excessive heat. *ak vehicle was eventually examined by local dealership and was repaired under warranty.*jb

Sliding side door stick. they do not open smoothly. i have confirmed this with other owners. the dealer says they just need lubricating. and they seem to snicker when i mention the doors as if they know something is wrong. this last time that prompted this report is that the actual door handle came off!! thank you. *ak

Honda said the other 3 recalls for the exact same problem of 1999's does not cover mine even though i have the exact same problem. the car door is a hazard and could open unexpectedly. they should fix mine just like they fixed the others. maybe they should start another recall. dt

Electric sliding doors are still unlatching.recall was taken care off in 1999. recall id#99v159000/ manufacturer's recall#99054. consumer will contact dealer.*ak

Driver side power door failed to open manually or by power lock, dealer replaced and later it failed again, both left and right doors failed simultaneously and passenger could not get out of vehicle. *slc

Putting a child in the car seat accidently hit the automatic lock on the key chain and sliding door began to close. applied pressure to keep it from closing, but it failed. had to move out of the way. manual states that if a power sliding door runs into any obstacle while it is closing, door will stop and then reverse direction. contacted dealer , and they contacted manufacturer. manufacturer said it is supposed to work like this. *ak *ml

The sliding door behind the driver will not open many times. sometimes it sticks and even my husband can only open it after repeated powerful pulls. sometimes it stays locked. the other sliding door is very difficult to open sometimes also. *tr

Passenger's side sliding door not opening properly since purchase. taken to dealer for repair 5-6 times. dealer replaced latches. currently, door opened while driving 55 mph. consumer able to close with remote control, does not open or close manually. *ak

Both left and right sliding doors do not retract. yh

We consider the car to be a lemon as it has been back to the service station many many times with no resolution. the greatest danger is the inoperable doors and locks that intermitantly engage and disengage. this can be a serious problem with our small children being lock in a car. the dealer has not been able to remedy this issue after several attempts.

Consumer took car to dealer for a problem he was having with door latches. dealer fixed the problem, consumer went on vacation, and when he returned the latches were not working again. door almost sliced his daughter in half. these were automatic door sensors that could detect an object in or around door. consumer stated that his daughter has a bruise across her shoulder. *ak

Alert buzzer of both sliding doors go off intermittently while driving. the vehicle has been taken to the dealer 5-6 times. the tracks and contacts have been cleaned, does not remedy the problem.*jb due to the constant buzzing of the door alarm as if the door is opened, consumer resulted to turning off the automatic door feature, but when using the doors manually, the doors are hard to open. *tt

Left sliding door not locking, unlocking, or opening properly. dealer tried to fix twice now and still broken. door locks and unlocks itself while in motion. it pops, clicks, and buzzes at random. right sliding door opens while in motion. dealer tried to fix once and still broken. a/c makes tremendous "thunking" noise-clutch engaging improperly. dealer tried to fix twice-told me"could not duplicate" still broken. left & right front windows both had bad parts. left still waiting on parts to be put in. seatbelt in middle, left rear locked so tightly while van in motion that i was trapped. it would not release even while van was not braking, turning, etc. doors are main safety concern and dealer not able to correct problems and zone office #6 unwilling to return my phone calls regarding this important matter.

Right sliding door often will not close and latch shut, even after several attempts. one time, i thought it was closed, but it slid open on its own while i was driving.

The sliding door does not open by remote and its "very hard" to open by the sliding door latch. please provide further information. *ak

Erratic power lock operation, intermittently lock would unlock by itself after locking by panel control or remote. also, sliding door would open approximately 6" and remain open until vehicle was turned off. then, would wait a few minutes and restart vehicle. dealer notified, and and made some repairs. please feel free to provide any further details. *ak

Electronic left sliding door closure mechanism closes on my left arm, and fails to emergency stopping and retracting. *ak
