We have classified the 30 complaints from 1999 Honda Odyssey about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
Transmission failure at 118,000 miles. there are several reports on the internet about these failures.
Vehicle lurches when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. couple of months ago the check engine light came on and had $600 worth of repair done, now light is gone but problem persists. also, vehicle rolls back when on a slight incline while in drive. *jb
If the vehicle was not in park, the consumer was still able to take the key out the ignition. *jb
99 honda odyssey transmission slipping when trying to accelerate. *jb
I have a 1999 honda odyssey with 65,000 miles on it. our check engine light came on and i was told by a transmission shop that the dif. bearings were failing and causing the solenoids to malfunction. they say i need a total transmission rebuild. i have found that there are many many more out there with the same problem. i am pursuing honda to cover the replacement because it is obviously a under engineered / defective design. *nlm
1999 honda odyssey has transmission failures. consumer states that the transmission has been replaced three different times and wants honda to cover the cost of the replaced transmission. *nj the consumer stated the vehicle now needs a 4th transmission. *jb
Transmission failure:sluggish start. engine on high revs when slowing down and hears a loud noise before coming into a stop
The transmission has gone out at 96,000 miles. his transmission started to fail while trying to go into gear. ph
Transmission loud noise - it is one of symptoms of transmission problem that indicated in the 2000-2001 odyssey recall notice. honda should extend the warrenty to 1999 model as well.
Automatic transmission failed after check engine warning lamp and tcs lamp turned on. code# p0740 which is torque converter was the problem. ts
Transmission failed while vehicle was traveling at slow speed---or a major accident would have occurred in my opinion. (i have been a police officer for over 18 years). ******dims 11 ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis*******770793. *ak *jb
Transmission slips and hesitates when accelerating. very slow to kick in gear. hazardous when pulling into traffic or on fast moving highway travel.
1999 honda odyssey transmission failed and was replaced only 3,000 miles out us warranty and within the canadian warranty the car was sold under. honda has covered under an extended warranty other similar model years and should have covered this one under recall. the failure of these transmissions at an alarming rate, outside the identified transmissions, and without recall is a very dangerous consumer situation.
Honda odyssey check engine light came on and transmission lunges and has a delay shifting gears. *nlm
Problem with shifting on automatic transmission from 2nd to 3rd gear. engine races and does not want to go into 3rd gear. had transmission repaired, and found that the 2nd gear clutch plates had severe premature wear, and the clutch plates were grooved (not smooth like the 3rd gear clutch plates, and not what was shown in the repair manual). the replacement clutch plates were smooth, as shown in the repair manual. ts
Honda has extended the transmission warrantee on the 2000 and 2001 models and should do so with the 1999 models as well as there are many failures being reported. dt
1999 honda odyssey van transmission problems. incident date is the day we started having problems. *nlm
Consumer stated that while driving and without warning the transmission would not down shift causing a distraction to the consumer. dealer notified ts

Powertrain: transmission failure
Transmission - clutch dt
At 73,000 miles my transmission needs to be replaced. many other people have reported this problem. two incidents were cited in the los angeles times of catastrophic failures that could lead to serious accidents. this car is our family vehicle, i am scared of what might happen even if the transmission is replaced. several posts to the internet indicate that people have replaced the transmission up to three times over the life of the vehicle. i understand honda has issued a recall or extended the warranty on the 2000-2001 odysseys but will not being doing anything for the 1999 model. also, the locking actuator on the door of the vehicle has failed repeatedly. the alarm system will arm, but the door is not locked. when the door is then opened the alarm sounds. this has scared my children enough to make them run from the vehicle to the street. this problem appears to corrected now, but it took three tries. nlm
Internal transmission failure at 69,000 miles. *ak
While driving 40 mph consumer tried to accelerate and vehicle would not increase in speed. when shifting vehicle, it jerks. dealer determined transmission needed to be replaced.*ak
With less than 45,000 miles, transmission fails to engage smoothly when pulling away from a stop. also, does not down-shift smoothly at high rpm. other symptoms are the tcm light and check engine light come on. upon diagnosis, the dealer confirmed a transmission problem. american honda agrees to replace the transmission and will cover the parts, but the dealership wants $700.00 in labor to complete the repair. a 36,000 mile warranty on a transmission is inadequate - i've driven hondas and toyotas 150,000 and more in the past and have never had a transmission failure. with the number of transmission problems reported for this vehicle on this web site, honda should stand behind their reputation and correct this problem long-term. i plan on driving this vehicle to 120,000 miles or more - at this rate, that means 3 transmissions!*ak
Transmission shifting rough at 55k miles. dealer found metal in trans fluid recommended replacement. transmission replaced 60k with rebuilt unit.
Transmission failing. clutch engages late and suddenly: engine revs as gas is applied but clutch doesn't engage, then clutch engages suddenly, causing car to jerk forward hard. this is dangerous--can't pull out into traffic, because i don't know if car will actually go when i step on the gas, and car coasts as transmission tries (but fails) to shift between e.g. 1st and 2nd. please require a recall on this--many people have reported the same problem in auto newsgroups on the internet. this is clearly a manufacturing defect, and a potentially serious safety problem as well.*ak
When accelerating from a stop, vehicle will initially "balk", but then jerk into gear and lurch forward. the dealer has not been able to determine cause of problem. ts

I have found many incidents related to transmission/door latch failures with 1999 honda odyssey... too many to be a coincidence!*ak
Engine check light kept coming on intermittently, vehicle taken to dealer, and they informed consumer that transmission needed to be replaced. feel free to provide any further infromation.*ak
Engine check light came on 5 times over 4 months. the last time transmission had to be replaced.*ak
Engine check light turns on repeatedly. honda service says failure code indicates new transmission needed, although we do not detect transmission problems just yet. internet search has turned up a lot of others mentioning similar transmission problem with 1999 honda odyssey, and i dont want to wait until there is an accident before reporting my transmission problem. based on the number of others owners with same problem, hopefully honda will do the right thing and repair/fix this problem. *ak
When engine is cold, transmission jerks and lurches. vehicle cannot increase speed beyond 20 mph. dealer (not the same as where it was purchased) this is morehead honda in newburgh ny said it needed transmission servicing and new parts, charged us $250. now they tell us it needs new transmission and they will cover all but $800. we have spent enough already on repairing this poorly built vehicle. this is a problem that is happening to many of these vehicles and it is time that the manufacturer be subjected to a recall. *ak
Engine check light came on at about 72,000 miles. took the car in to leigth honda and they told me to replace the solenoid. i paid $400 and it was replaced . about 1,000 miles later the engine check light came back on. this time took it to auto park honda in cary, nc. it had a torque converter failure code and transmission was replaced with a new transmission. i have had the repaired van back for two weeks and the engine check light has come back on again. we are waiting for auto park's response. i have been rea many, many complaints about the exact same problem at the autofan.com web site.*ak
Premature transmission failure
Though we bought the odyssey used, it only had 10k miles on it by an elderly couple. no towing, no steep hills, no abusive driving. transmission started shifting at wrong times, then we heard loud 'clunk' when putting it in reverse. brought it to dealer and was told we needed to replace the transmission with a used one for $3075 (90 day warranty) or new one for $4700 (50k/50 mth warranty). we transferred car to transmission shop who is rebuilding it for $2100. no mention at dealer of any known problems with odyssey transmissions, but it sounds like there is a consistent defect. have heard many stories of people getting post-warranty replacements from their dealer, after pressuring them to fix the problem.*ak
Manufacturer denies any problems however we have a honda service bulliten that states otherwise sb #00-065 please read it. they are replacing them with remanufactured transmissions but there is no reason to believe that they are free from this same defect. that is why honda has put a totally new transmission design into the 2002.*ak
Many honda odyssey 1999/ 2000 have transmission failure within first 50000 miles. i am one of them.*ak
At 54,700 miles (july 2001) the car made a clunking noise when put into gear. tcs light and check engine light came on. service couldnot reproduce clunking problem. since the transmission was out of warrenty i kept driving making sure to have regular maintenance. it continued to "rev" when starting to move or excellerating quickly. tcs light and check engine light came on again at 100,000 (dec 2002). i questioned them again about the transmission but was told that it was a catalytic converter/ engine control system.( out of stock until february). tcs and check engine lights again in june 2003 at 117,900. code showed a transmission po740.transmission "smelled burned." sept. 2003 tcs and check engine light indicate trainsmission needs replacing. the dealer nor manufacturer had told me that the warrenty had been extended to 100,000. this transmission problem in the odyssey, and other hondas, is so wide spread that i can't believe nothing is being done for the consumer. my cousin in missouri owns a 1999 odyssey and she has had to replace both the trainsmission and catalytic convertor as well. a pretty big coincidence. i could name other parts we have both replaced. could it be that some parts of the odyssey are lemons? calling honda coporoate is a joke. they put you on hold, have a good laugh and then tell you they can't do anything because the car is over the mileage limit. they should be made to do the right thing. an investigation might change this arrogant company.
While driving vehicle will jerk out of gear, not accelerate properly, which was a result of a bad transmission. had part replaced with a new one. 1 year later, problem reoccurred. contacted dealer. this was a common problem.*ak
Was driving approximately 55mph odometer rolled to 50,000 miles. when this happened, vehicle just stalled out. there was no prior warning of problem. vehicle started to roll backwards. placed vehicle in neutral & vehicle started right. pulled to side of road & turned vehicle off. will be taking vehicle to dealer to check out problem.*ak
Transmission problem. *ak
I purchased a 1999 honda odyssey in aug 1999. first account was in mar 2000. by nov 2000, vehicle was seen 3 times for the check engine light. five years later, this vehicle has been serviced 12 times (working on number 13 now) for the check engine light. egr kit has been replaced 5 times, remaining visits accounted for my cleaning egr ports, replacing the egr valve, and replacing the gas cap. i've had other vehicles for 7+ years and never replaced a gas cap! this vehicle has gone through 2? check engine light is tied to the emissions system. as a result, vehicle is now having problems passing inspection. during the last visit, local dealer replaced the egr kit in order to get the 05 inspection completed. two weeks later the check engine light is on again. in addition, internal damage was found in the transmission in aug 03. dealer agreed to take care of this problem in good faith. this was prior to the official recall notice. at the time of service the mileage was clocked at 81823. less than 1 year later (june 2004), it was discovered by an independent garage that the left axle seal going into the transmission was cracked and the transmission fluid was extremely gritty. when brought to the attention of the dealer, i was informed that the vehicle was out of warranty on the new transmission and i would have to pay for any service required (mileage was clocked at 102000). as a single mother of 3 young children, my main objective is to be able to transport them in a safe, reliable manner. given the extent of my emission and transmission issues that remain unresolved, i cannot depend on this vehicle. this situation was first documented to honda in nov 2000. at that time they extended the warranty to 6 years/75,000 miles. another letter was sent certified mail (signed for on 6 aug 2004). i've yet to hear back from honda. i'm very disappointed with this honda product and even more disappointed with their (lack of) customer service.*jb
When parking vehicle on incline/hill or driveway with transmission pawl in park , vehicle will roll backward. *ak
Please contact me so i may mail or fax the long history of defects on this vehicle. currently i wish to address the unsafe brakes on this vehicle. thank you
The speedometer and tachometer failed during the trip on highway, i brought the van to the dealer, but they don't have the parts and don't know when the parts will become available. driving without speedometer could be dangerous especially in winter conditions.
Design of the gear shifter interferes with the control of the vehicle radio. whenever the gear is in drive it obstructs the control of the radio, and causes danger in shifting gear into another . manufacturer notifed and informed nothing could be done. *ak
