We have classified the 30 complaints from 1999 Honda Odyssey about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
Tl* the contact owns a 1999 honda odyssey. while driving at any speed, the vehicle shut off without warning with the exception of a green key icon flashing on the instrument panel. the vehicle was placed in neutral and coasted over to the side of the road. the vehicle was able to restart. the dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that there was no recall. the failure was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 220,000.
Recently, while traveling on interstate 94, the check engine light came on in my vehicle along with a light that reads "tcs". shortly after these two lights came on, my vehicle began having problems accelerating. when i drive my vehicle, i have problems with the van taking off and maintaining stability once in motion. during travel on highways, freeways, interstates, or city streets, my vehicle violently shifts from first gear to second gear when i press on the accelerator, causing it to slow down unexpectedly before jerking into motion in the middle of traffic. also, during recent night time travel the headlights began to flicker, go dim then get bright again. the vehicle also slows down when turning corners then will suddenly jump into motion. also, the driver side passenger door recently went off track causing a screaming alarm to sound during travel. i have recently had to have the high pressure power steering line replaced because it had a hole in the upper hose.i am extremely concerned that the poor acceleration of my vehicle and the violent jerking from first to second gear will cause an accident. my vehicle is my only mode of transportation to work, school and any important place that i need to travel to.
Was driving vehicle on highway when the transmission failed. was nearly killed, as i was unable to move car into a safe area
I was driving the van and all of sudden without any warning lights stopped and could not move forward in my street
Our 1999 honda odyssey has had the p0740 torque clutch converter solenoid circuit (open) code displayed numerous times, we thought since it was a serious issue and the transmission had already been replaced within 20,000 miles that we should actually take it to the dealer in marysville, wa and have them do a transmission flush then a supervisor and said no you should have us run a diagnostic by one of our master techs. after reiterating this seriousness of our transmission issue the code coming on and delays in shifting mostly just barely noticeable, they assured us if we paid $129 for a diagnostic that a master tech could get to the issue, however they later told us after we got the car back and called on the issue that an apprentice (not a master tech) had done the entire inspection and came up with no problems except a different code having to do with up bad catalytic converter which had never been an issue before and told us we may need to get that replaced soon. the transmission code p0740 came up on our way home from the dealership. i told them of the code and the research i have done and asked what else to do and they told me there is nothing that can be done that is a transmission death code and we would need to replace the transmission, to which i asked even though it was just replaced 20,000 miles ago and he said maybe you got a bad transmission. q: are they just all bad for this vehichle?
I was driving on a crowded expressway when my car seized up completely due to a transmission failure which put me in an extremely dangerous situation. i was in the middle lane with three large semi trailer trucks in front of me, in back of me, and to the right of me on a 3 lane highway. the truck behind me had enough room to barely slow down but it almost crashed into me. i turned on my emergency flasher lights and was able to get the car onto the shoulder of a slightly uphill exit ramp, narrowly escaping serious injury. i was then able to very slowly move the car in first gear with the flashers going, and fortunately was close to a side street where i parked the car and had it towed to the nearest dealership. although honda replaced my transmission for free under the auspices of a class action lawsuit back in 2007, the car has low mileage for the life of the transmission. however, they are refusing to cover the replacement cost of the transmission. the transmission failure was sudden and literally seized up the car and put my life in danger. this doesn't seem to matter to honda. i am registering this complaint not only to get satisfaction from honda, but also to warn other odyssey owners that this may happen to them, and let them know this is potentially deadly. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 1999 honda odyssey. the contact stated that the vehicle rolled away down a hill. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the gear shifter needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 232,000.
Going uphill on a curve at about 35 mph at 9:45pm with a slight drizzle. the tcs and engine lights came on and gears disengaged. gear was at d4. no power to drive the minivan uphill and van started to roll backwards and downwards. when accelerator was pressed, the rpm went up to 6000-7000 rpm but the gears remain disengaged. suspect transmission defect. set emergency lights on and roll over to the curb. parked and hitch a ride home. filed a complaint with nhtsa and reported it to american honda on 8/4/2014 as this is a very dangerous event. *tr
Transmission failed. vehicle failed to move forward, the symptoms are exactly how honda expressed in the warranty extension. the transmission was replaced once at a honda dealer at out of pocket cost when the vehicle had 124k miles. i called the honda product & concern department, and filed a case # [xxx]. there are several forums and sites with consumers having transmission failure on odyssey 1999-2003 over and over again. honda should be held responsible for their faulty design. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Our 1999 honda odyssey has relatively low mileage (~125000 miles) and it has been diagnosed as having transmission problem again. when it only had about 30000 miles, it had a transmission problem and its replacement was covered under manufacture warranty at that time. we searched the internet and found that the transmission problem is a very common for honda vehicles. we contacted america honda and they told us it has already passed the warranty period and they would not help with the transmission repair. we paid full sticker price for this van 14 years ago and wish it can last up to 200000 miles. now we are reluctant to pay for the high repair cost or we could not sell it at a satisfactory price. we are very unhappy with america honda's response and totally lost our trust in honda vehicles. *tr
Transmission completely froze (locked-up). this is the second transmission in this vehicle, the first was replaced under a class action suit against honda. fortunately, driver was near side of road and recognized a problem prior to the complete lock-up, otherwise the van would have skidded to a stop in the middle of the highway. honda informs they will not provide any assistance with any replacement transmission and will only offer a 1 year warranty. it costs over $4000 to replace the transmission in this vehicle. honda is completely unsympathetic to the potential risks they are forcing on odyssey owners. this had happened to thousands of odyssey owners and honda need to be held accountable. *tr
Transmission slipping and torque converter bad? had the trans replaced once before? this problem got dangerously worse when the ignition recalled switch cased excessive stalling at high rates of speed. please help. *tr
Driving thru the mountain from kanab ut to flagstaff az on hwy 89 (scenic route) the transmission began to whine and tach out at 7000-8000 rpms in d4. vehicle would not respond, as if slipping. then down shifted to d3 and the same thing happened. out in the middle of nowhere, they limped into flagstaff at d2 and 40 mph. notified that the transmission was gone and needed to be replaced. honda refuses to assist with repairs even though they have know about their design flaw for years. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 1999 honda odyssey. the contact was driving 35 mph when the check engine warning light illuminated. while attempting to accelerate from a traffic stop, the vehicle became resistant and stalled. the contact was able to restart the vehicle but could not shift into drive. the vehicle was able to be driven from the scene after several attempts. the dealer was notified and informed the contact that the transmission needed to be rebuilt. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact had the vehicle towed to a local mechanic for a second opinion. the manufacturer was notified and informed the contact that the vehicle was not under warranty and provided no assistance. the failure mileage was 110,000.
Transmission diagnosed as early stage of failure. no help from honda to cover cost of replacement or repair. *tt
I took wife and my son to dmv in willimantic.on our way back, around route 32 my transmission started slipping..i shut off the odyssey for a mim, turn it on drove fine for 3 mim and slip again finally i call tow truck..took it to my house.. call aamco to pick it up and fix it..$3,600 transmission rebuild and reinstall $384.00 radiator and they only offered 12 month/12,000 mile warranty. *tr
I just bought a honda odyssey year 1999. the transmission just broke at only 91,000 miles. after reading so many complaints about transmission issues, i felt i should express my frustration in this matter. one thing i will tell you, i will never buy a honda car again. it is unbelievable how many complaints there are about this issue. i wrote a letter to honda just to be denied any kind of help. honda should stand for their crappy transmissions on the odyssey and offer some help. i've always owned toyota cars and all i can say is that they very reliable cars. if your planning on buying a honda, please think about twice! *tr
Bought the vehicle at an auction 4 days ago and started experiencing transmission problems today. the transmission is slipping and stalls when shifting to upper gears especially for the first 3 gears. i understand it's a used vehicle and could have problems. but when it is an obvious design/manufacturer's flaw, going by the thousands of complaints from odyssey users (brand new and second/third owners), should honda not be liable for these design flaws? only after buying, experiencing and then researching my transmission problem did i realize my grave mistake of investing in this vehicle. thousands of customers have had from 2 to as much as 6 transmissions put in these odysseys! i am a student and put every penny of my savings into buying a vehicle i can not drive! any help in addressing this issue will be greatly appreciated.
Check engine light on with error code p0740 indicating transmission failure on 99 honda odyssey. according to the honda service person, honda won't pay any repair or replace cost because it's out of my extended warranty even though there were numerous similar complaints reported on 1999 - 2002 odyssey transmission problems including a recall and class action lawsuit in california against honda for 1999-2001 accord transmissions that showed the same malfunction code. i'm the original owner of the car with extended warranty. i have the car serviced regularly at the dealer. the car was at very low mileage without showing the transmission problem when the extended warranty expired at 2006. i believe honda should perform a "goodwill" repair on my transmission and pickup most cost instead for me to pickup the $5000 expense for the parts and labor or the option of getting a new car.. *kb
Torque converter/ transmission failed with 104,800 miles on 12-year old vehicle despite being driven primarily on the highway and being meticulously maintained. honda's extended warranty (offered as settlement of a class action suit) ended after 7 years despite low mileage. *tr
When i try to advance suddenly, accelerate or some times it's like i'm in neutral; and this is every time i used the van, my concern is that i can crash or someone could hit me, i tryed to repair it last year the same problem with the transmission but in less than a year i have the same problem again. *tr
Honda odyssey 1999 model auto transmission issue. in my particular case, it occurred pulling out of a parking lot into a busy street and the odyssey struggled to get up to a safe speed slipping it's way into various gears. i never thought about it but honestly this could have killed me and my family as we were attempting to pull out into a busy street. thank goodness i was not rear ended or worse and was able to pull the van into the most immediate parking lot. when i searched in the internet there are lot many complains on honda odyssey about the similar issues and honda has not done anything to address this issue so far. would like to request to consider this case and make necessary actions at the earliest before we loose more lives due to this issue. *tr
1999 honda odyssey transmission problems. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 1999 honda odyssey. the contact stated that the transmission began slipping and all of the instrument panel lights illuminated while stopped at a traffic stop. then, all of the warning lights except for the check engine and pcs warning lights stopped illuminating. the contact stated that there was a recall for the automatic transmission (recall information not available) but the manufacturer advised that the recall was only being offered to those vehicle owners who had less than 100,000 miles or whose vehicle was less than seven years old. no further assistance was offered. the vehicle was not inspected or repaired for the failure. the current mileage was 90,036. the failure mileage was 90,002.
Transmission recalled in 05 for defect, was replaced at that time with local dealer. july 29, 2008 transmission failed while traveling far from home and was replaced at my cost of $5,000 as i went 6 months past warranty. transmission is failing again and has to be replaced at my cost because i put 4,000 miles over the 36,000 mile warranty. contacted american honda for help and they will not assist me. the transmission has never been fixed for the original defect with the recall in 05, if it had, i certainly would not be told by honda that it needs it's 4th transmission. (3 in 5 years time). *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 honda odyssey. while driving approximately 35 mph up a hill, the contact noticed that the vehicle would not accelerate. the contact was able to coast to a stop where the vehicle was parked. the vehicle had not been inspected or repaired. the contact stated that the transmission had previously been replaced by an authorized dealer. the current and failure mileages were approximately 114,000.
Check engine light was indicating that there was an egr valve issue. turned into much bigger underlying problem with the transmission. cleaned out the valve on 3 occasions and light kept coming on. transmission started slipping until it was no longer safe to drive...wouldn't drive in "drive". had to put it in 3rd, then 2nd and still it was very unsteady. brought it in and was told it needs a new transmission. honda already replaced the transmission 2 years after we bought it. we have maintained this vehicle religiously! we are very disappointed. it also makes this odd clicking noise inside the van...this appears to be electrical in nature.
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 honda odyssey. while driving approximately 30 mph he applied light pressure to the brake pedal and various unknown lights began to illuminate on the dashboard. the vehicle stalled and when the vehicle was restarted it began operating normally but the check engine light illuminated on the dashboard. the failure recurred approximately one week later and the vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop where he was informed that the failure was within the transmission. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where he was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileages were 114,000. the vin was unavailable.
My husband and i purchased a used 1999 honda odyssey with low mileage for our family vehicle. we have had the van for approximately 2.5 years. it currently has less than 100,000 miles, and the check engine light came on indicating there is a malfunction with the transmission. after researching this issue, i came across the honda customer service website in which a recall was listed for this exact problem (but ironically not the same year). after calling jessica in the customer service dept. and requesting a goodwill extension on the warranty (since the vehicle has less than 100,000 miles) i was told there was nothing they could do for us (since the time had expired) even though through their own website they clearly have a defect with the transmission during this time parameter. *tr
I have 1999 honda odyssey who wont pass the emissions test. i am second owner to this vehicle and got it with 62,000 miles on it and only have used it for only over 33,000 miles only. went to a mechanic and said that the transmission is the problem. its no reason for only 93,000 miles on the vehicle to be going bad. made a call to american honda and got denied for repairs because they said its over the warranty. i don't understand i knew that they knew that their vehicle has defect and they should solve the problem. who would buy a car less than a 100,000 mile then the transmission will go bad? i at least expect 150k or 200k before it goes down. really disappointed on honda automobiles. need some help. very costly repair. needs honda to repair this free of charge. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 1999 honda odyssey. the contact was accelerating from a complete stop when the vehicle abnormally surged backward. the contact shut off the engine and then restarted. when attempting to accelerate a second time, the vehicle moved forward approximately five feet before independently stopping. the vehicle was towed to a local automotive repair facility. the contact was informed that the transmission was defective and would need to be replaced. the contact stated that the transmission was replaced less than one year prior to the recent failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the vin was not available. the current and failure mileage was unknown.
1999 honda odyssey - driving on the express way with the family in the car when the dash light and tcs light come on. van would not shift or keep speed. we were almost rear ended because of the decreasing speed. this will be the fourth transmission for this van. honda did cover the first three but has adamantly stated they will not cover this one. clearly there is an issue with the transmission on this model. because this is a mini van in which families are driving, honda puts you and yours at risk with a repetitive issue. *tr
I purchased a 1999 honda odyssey ex with about 20,000 miles on it from a honda dealer as certified pre-owned in 2001. transmission had already been replaced once. i replaced it under honda certified warranty in 2005. vehicle turned 149,000 miles and transmission (confirmed by santa monica honda) must again be replaced meaning car needs a 4th transmission. honda will not extend any financial assistance to me nor will they release factory transmission to me saying they are holding factory parts for "good will" replacements! this has been a chronic problem with this vehicle. how can they do this? *tr
1999 honda odyssey, 153k mi. transmission replaced july 2007 at 100k under honda's extended warranty that was driven by class action lawsuit. on 3/15, transmission failed again with no warning at highway speed (approx 65 mph), while in mountainous pass (marker 77) on i-8 east of san diego . driver (son) avoided accident & other traffic, but could have been disastrous for him & 5 passengers. was able to coast to side of road. american honda refuses to provide assistance. transmission serviced per prescribed maint schedule (fluid drain & fill at 30k mi interval). 50k miles seems a bit low for the supposedly fixed odyssey transmission problem commonly seen in 1999-2001 models. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 1999 honda odyssey. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle would decelerated and stall without warning. in addition, the contact mentioned that the vehicle would jerk violently and shift gears automatically. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the ignition and the transmission were defective and needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 90,000 and the current mileage was 110,000.
I have a 1999 honda odyssey ex with 190,000 miles. i have maintained this car very well. to my surprise, i just found out on 03/05/2011 that the transmission failed and needs to be replaced for about $1,500 (used) or $3,000 new. the engine lights had been on for a while but honda did not acknowlegde nothing wrong. too many honda odyssey's owners had the same problem. this is no doubt a defect with these transmissions. i request a full investigation on this matter. *tr
Transmission needed to be replaced at just over 56,000. did not have extended warranty coverage protection so was entirely absorbed by me. incident failure happened while on highway and safely made it back home with prayers and cautious driving techniques like a bad theme park ride. cost was over $2,000.00. replaced in feb. 2010. *cn
I own a 1999 honda odyssey. the second transmission has failed. the first replaced due to class action. is nhtsa ever going to look into this and force a recall and get our vans fixed? how many people have to be left stranded on busy highways with families. *tr
Honda odyssey 1999. current mileage : 96501 owner : tran ngoc 714-399-5564 problem: transmission problem caused sudden stop while driving in freeware. america honda head quarter refused honor their extend service warranty 99 months or 109,000 mile for transmission. *tr
My 99 honda odyssey has been babied and taken care of by myself. i have never had a serious problem with the vehicle. i remember getting a letter from honda saying the trans. had an extended warranty of 10 years 100,000. i always had the trans. serviced at my mechanic with a t tech service every 25,000 miles.at 71,000 miles i noticed the trans. started to slam into the gear when it decelerated. i called a honda dealer and made an appointment to have the trans. looked at. i was told the trans. was not going into 1st gear but directly into 2nd gear. it shifted fine when i took it their. i told them it was slamming into gear when it downshifted. anyway i was informed the warranty had expired. i call american honda. i was informed again that the warranty had expired in 2006 at 109,000 miles.honda did extend the warranty but not 10 years. i received a factory warranty of 3 years 36,000 mile warranty and they extend the warranty to 7 years 109,000. that extended warranty included the first 3 years.so they really extended the warranty 4 years. they told my information and would determine if honda would pay for the cost of a new trans.. i was told it takes 2 days to make their decision. i was called the next day by gloria of american honda and she took the information again and then was asked what i wanted honda to do. when i told her to pay for the repair of my trans.. she informed me that was not going to happen. i then said then you have made your decision. she told she has not made no decision yet. i informed her their were over 2000 complaints at nhtsa about the honda odyssey 99 to 2002 transmission. and extending the warranty and replacing trans. with remaufactured ones with the same problem and failing again later leaving the $4000.00 repair to the owner. honda redesigned the trans. in 2003 and they have no failures. it has been 1 week and i still have not heard from american honda on their decision. i am joining a class action suit to get this car recalled. *tr
My honda was very slow to start in the last couple months. thought i wasn't warming it up long enough once the weather turned colder. once it was running for a few minutes, it was fine. my check engine light was on but i have been haunted by this light for a couple of years. usually something minor. one time i had my cat converter replaced. my son and three of his young friends took the van to the snow. i insisted he take the van over his car because it was "safer". there was heavy holiday traffic. on an incline, he went to push the pedal down and the car would not go forward. it started drifting backwards! very dangerous in major traffic. he drifted onto the shoulder, put the emergency brake on called aaa. these kids were stranded in the snow until the tow truck arrived. it just stopped! incredible! i replaced the tranny once before while the car was under its original extended warranty. replaced the tranny at 90,200 miles. now at 147,000 miles, i need another transmission. since the second transmission was comped, there was no warranty on the replacement tranny. it was not replaced with anew tranny but a re-manufactured unit. was honda suppose to replace it with a new one if my vehicle was still under warranty? *tr
1999 honda odyssey transmission replaced at 68,000 miles by a honda dealer because of shifting issues. honda replaced this for free. transmission needs to be replaced again at 137,000 because of shifting issues. i cannot get 70,000 out of a honda transmission. the van has a hard down shift when slowing down. honda has a serious problem with this transmission. *tr
I purchased my odyssey used with about 90000 miles already on it. i was unaware of the transmission issues these vehicles had until i experienced it myself a little over a year ago. i had a 3rd party warranty which covered the repair of this transmission and now about a year later and only 12000 miles my vehicles transmission is dead again. like most cases it starts with a jolt in the vehicle followed by both the check engine and tcs light coming on. well i have had to deliver my vehicle back to the 3rd party transmission repair facility to fix my car under warranty but they cant seem to get it right. i have now been without my vehicle for 6 months and it is still at the shop. i honda could own up to their problems and fix this the correct way i could bring it to the dealer and have them fix it without having to repay for yet another transmission. *tr
I own a 1999 honda odyssey with 120,000 miles. i received a recall notice when the vehicle had 75,000 miles about replacing the transmission. at the time, the vehicle had no transmission problems. right now the vehicle is completely disabled in front of my house. the shifter moves into the drive position, but will not move in any gear. not even reverse. i spoke with the local dealer, honda of annapolis, who stated that the vehicle was over the warranty and i would have to pay $3500.00 for a re-manufactured transmission. i spoke to a local aamco shop who reported to me that they had replaced no less than 6 transmissions for the 1999-2002 model honda odyssey. clearly there is a problem. i received no warning from the vehicle of a problem. i just got in it one morning and it would not move. now i wish i hadn't had the recall done. the original transmission worked just fine. please help. *tr
I have been having transmission problems with this van since 2003, honda did replace the transmission in january 2004, the van is a 1999, at that time i had about 30000 miles on it, october of 2007 my transmission completely went out while i was driving my son home from a sport event on the highway, both of us were very scared seeing as it just wouldn't accelerate, thank goodness no one behind us or they would have hit us, i was able to get to the side of the i90. i called honda is regards to this asking what the warranty was , they told me it was only a 3 year warranty on the replaced transmission, i had 75000 miles on it..so i went to a local shop and now 1 year later i was driving home from visiting my son at the university of iowa and my van was jerking whenever it was shifting into a different gear...again a great hazard on the road when you are in traffic with cars going 60-90 miles per hour...this is a great defect on hondas part with their transmissions...i only have 83000. on this van and it is due for a 4th transmission, doesn't that sound un real. i also have my van is working order and to the mechanic often. *tr
Tcs/check engine lights came on. previous owner confirms that tcs/check engine light had turned on before. in both cases, the repair shop reset the lights and everything seemed fine. on the most recent shop visit, the lights were reset and the repairman commented on a slight late shift between 1 and 2. i hadn't noticed anything up until this point, so i decided to wait and watch for the shift issue. 6 months later, the late shift problem has grown. this causes the vehicle to rev too high and shudder when the shift is finally accomplished. it is sometimes possible to apply the gas pedal in a very specific manner to avoid the stutter. otherwise it occurs during every shift between 1 and 2. having found many other examples of the same problem online, i have not had any work done (pending a request that honda pay for the repair). *tr
I have a 1999 honda odyssey lx minivan with 54k miles. the transmission slams into gear. i brought it to hempstead honda and they said i need a new transmission. when i'm on the highway and brake and reaccelerate, the car jerks forward almost causing an accident. *tr
At traveling 50 to 60 mph i have noticed recently a shimming and shuttering of my car with a loss of power while trying to accelerate. it felt like the front wheels were loose. it lasted a few seconds and then stopped. this has happened 3 or 4 times now. also, the check engine light came on and at the same time so did the tcs light. that light stayed on until the engine was restarted then after driving about 10 minutes it came on again and stayed on. i use my car all the time with kids and am concerned for their safety as well as mine. *tr
Vehicle stop shifting gears first, unresponsive to accelerator. slipping constantly as it started motion. second gear not working at all. check engine lights and emergency light went on. can only operate on l1 gear. at the time was moving to costa rica. did not have time to fix in us. vehicle currently in costa rica. made flush and repairs but it does not work properly. parked most of the time. *tr
Transmission failure caused vehicle halted and surged during travel, which may cause accident. transmission had been replaced in 2003. now it fails again in 2007. the lifespan is approximately 58,000 miles. *tr
