While driving on a city street, the engine of our 2018 honda cr-v (1.5 l turbo) suddenly lost power and smoke began pouring out of the exhaust, this happened during rush hour on a busy portland, oregon, street on a dark and rainy october evening. thankfully, the driver of the cr-v managed to get off the street and roll into a gas station without getting rear-ended. the cr-v was towed to a honda dealer's service department, where the cause of the problem was identified as "oil level above spec." rising oil level is a common problem in 2017-18 honda cr-vs, caused by dilution of crankcase oil with unburned gasoline due to an engine design flaw well known to honda. driving a vehicle with an engine that could fail at any time/place is definitely a safety issue, and the affected honda vehicles should immediately be recalled in the u.s. they already been recalled in china!
On or about october 5th, after reading consumer reports article about fuel in the engine oil i went and smelled my 2018 honda cr-v's awd ex oil dip stick and smelled a very strong oder of fuel. on monday oct. 8th i called my honda dealership and they advised to schedule service for a check of the issue. on tuesday oct 9th i brought my cr-v in for scheduled service check, the following is the summary off the customer's copy of the invoice. "customer states there is a fuel smell mixed with oil states dipstick smell like fuel - check and advise advised customer this is a known issue and honda has yet to come up with a counter measure for issue at this time advised customer he will be notified when fix is available." i will repeat "this is a know issue and honda has yet to come up with counter measure for issue" i was verbally advised that my vehicle was reported to honda as having the "known issue", i was also advised that this issue honda believes is related to colder climates. i take that to mean honda is aware every cr-v with the 1.5 liter turbo engine (dream engine) has this issue but it only manifests itself in colder climates. also interesting is honda is waiting to ship the 2019 models until fix is available, but not taking 2018 models off the market because that would mean honda is recalling the vehicle.
[ poss. gas in oil ] have been seeing oil level rising after first oil change at 7100 miles. oct.15. at 9100 level was approx. 3/8 of an inch above the high mark on dipstick. took car to jeff wyler honda, and talked to service manager who stated that there may be a fix coming but as of now nothing. told me to watch oil level for maybe another 1000 miles. on nov.17 oil level was almost up 1 inch above high mark on dipstick. nov. 19 ,took to dealer and had oil changed early ( 3000 ) miles . dealer stated oil was up about 1/2 qt. i have a picture of dipstick on ipad but not sure how to upload it.
At around 7200 miles i checked the oil and found it to be above the full line. the oil was very thin and had the distinct smell of gas. after short drives at lower speeds, the passenger compartment smells of gas. i don't smell gas in the passenger compartment when traveling long distances at high speeds.
There is gas in the oil. dashboard controls are shutting off , a strong smell of gas i. cabin.remote start wont work
Tl* the contact owns a 2018 honda cr-v. the contact noticed a strong fuel odor in the vehicle while driving. the vehicle was taken to roberts honda (located at 19 park ln, downingtown, pa 19335, (610) 269-8200) where it was diagnosed that the engine oil was being diluted by fuel in the engine, which caused the odor in the vehicle. the contact was informed that the engine should be replaced to alleviate the fuel odor. the contact stated that the odor became more prevalent in the cabin after the oil change was completed. the manufacturer was notified and provided case number: 09039894. the approximate failure mileage was 3,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2018 honda cr-v. while driving various speeds, the engine misfired and the vehicle would not properly accelerate. the contact also noticed fuel leaking into the engine oil. the vehicle was taken to an unknown dealer and the cpu assembly was reprogrammed, but the failure continued. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided case number: case 09652318. the failure mileage was 2,500.
I'm having two issues with my cr-v 1) engine oil level is showing more than the higher limit because of engine oil dilution. 2) gasoline smell in the cabin. i contacted honda on these issues but they said my vehicle doesn't have any recall notice and there is nothing they can do.
The engine oil is being diluted with gasoline due to a faulty engine design by honda. we first noticed a strong gas odor in the cabin in october 2018. we bought the car to the dealer in nov 2018, they noted the problem and did an oil change. honda released tsb 18-114 in dec 2018 to address the problem. i brought my cr-v to the dealer on 01/03/2019 and they applied the fix per tsb 18-114. however 3 weeks later, i noticed gasoline still diluting the engine oil. i bought the car back and they did an oil change on 01/30/2019 (for free) and advised to come back in 1,000 miles to check the oil again. i am afraid honda has no real fix for this issue and this constant dilution with lead to long term engine damage and possible other side effects like stalling.
Oil level over full. and strong fuel smell it the oil. my garage smells strongly of gas also. i took it to the dealership in octobet and they said that it was a known problem and a fix was comming soon? nothing yet? why would they sell vehicles with knowledge of a serious motor problem?
When turning left onto 4-lane highway, the vehicle exhibited unexpected severe hesitation. i took the vehicle to a dealer asking for diagnosis, and any ecu or cvt software updates. on 10/4/2018 the dealer "could not replicate" and reported software is up to date. see attached invoice. on 10/5/18 i read the consumer's union report regarding engine oil dilution on this vehicle. while the fill level on my dipstick is ~1/8th inch above full, no gasoline smell from the dipstick or interior has occurred to date.
Tl* the contact owns a 2018 honda cr-v. the contact stated that fuel was leaking into the oil. team honda (4613 e lincoln hwy, merrillville, in 46410, (219) 947-3900) scheduled an appointment for january 4, 2018 to provide a software update. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not assist. the approximate failure mileage was 7,800.
Oil levels rising above the full mark due to gas contamination
Gas smell!!!!! gas in the oil!!!!! no recall? are you serious?
2018 honda cr-v gas in the oil beware consumers .... i bought my 2018 honda cr-v in july.... after months of research on what the best small suv would be for me to have in my retirement. media articles raved about this automobile.... consumer reports chose it as their suv of the year .... it had this great 1.5 turbo engine that would get upwards of 27-33 mpg .... it was a complete package .... my dream retirement vehicle ....... the dealer told my husband and i that oil needs to be changed every 7000 miles or so .... my husband is a meticulous mechanic ... he checked the oil at 3000 miles and found it a quart high .... ( huummm... oil dies not increase .... and it reeked of gas..... gas in the oil? he started researching possible problems with the cr-v .... and things started to really sour.... usa honda has apparently known about this issue with the cr-v for quite some time .... they have kept it under the radar.... in china there has been a recall on 350,000 cr-v's and they have stopped sales.... canada has also acknowledged the issue... usa honda is claiming it is a cold weather issue .... ( first off i bought it in july and secondly.... a car that doesn't work in cold weather???? what the hell is that.... an awd vehicle at that!!!) honda is searching for a solution.... there is no solution.... gas is seeping into my oil wrecking the engine as i write .... honda needs to stop sales.... fess up and give me my money back or a new cr-v with the previously proven engine.... stay tuned! my husband feels owners out there are not aware yet because most don't change their own oil.... and also most do not have anywhere near the miles it will take to completely destroy this engine as he has indicated 'this cr-v with 1.5 turbo will never make 100,000 miles before it is destroyed ...please do something to recall these disasters
Oil level rising due to fuel dilution
Strong gasoline odor in oil. oil being diluted by gasoline. strong gasoline odor in cabin occasionally during short drives
When the vehicle is in motion at low speeds on inclined roads the engine is in a state where it is stalling over and over again. i have to accelerate harder to prevent the engine from completely stalling out. this is also followed by a smell of gas in the passenger compartment of the car.
Tl* the contact owns a 2018 honda cr-v. when the contact checked the engine oil level, he found fuel mixed with the engine oil. the vehicle was taken to heritage honda bel air (1800 bel air road, fallston, md 21047, 410-343-5644) and the engine oil was replaced, but the dealer was unable to determine why fuel was mixed with the engine oil. the dealer stated that there was no remedy for the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted. the failure mileage was 100.
I have the 2018 touring 1.5l turbo charged model. i am experiencing the fuel in oil issue and honda says nevada is not included in the update. i purchased this car brand new and want it fixed. i drive in a very cold climate on short trips, which is when they say the issue is occurring in this models.
The vehicle smells of un burnt gasoline in the cabin and under the hood. i went to check the oil level and it appeared higher than normal and it smelled of gasoline. additionally, the dipstick had a odd solid residue on it. you can see it in the attached picture. we had brought the car to honda they had kept it for a few days, they acknowledged the issue, and stated they had no "fix" for it. this is a major concern considering this is a pretty much brand new vehicle, especially considering the fact that honda has noted concern for the vehicle randomly stalling.
Engine oil is being deleted with gasoline in less than 2000 mies, which will cause engine damage over time. had oil change, it had almost 1/2 inch extra fluid on the oil dip stick level and the oil smells like old gasoline
Our new 2018 honda cr-ex-l has the 1.5l turbo engine. after 1,012 total miles, the oil was more than a quart high and smelled of gasoline. i had checked the oil level when we received the vehicle new and it had been normal - between the upper and lower marks while cold. i could smell gasoline both on the rag and coming from the crankcase. i took the car to the honda dealership and communicated the above plus i expressed safety concerns from the gasoline. the dealership contacted the regional honda service rep and they decided to change the oil and filter as a temporary solution. honda usa paid for the oil change and told the dealer that 'we know about the problem and are working on a solution but we do not have one yet.' honda was unable to answer any of our safety related concerns. we asked about: engine fire, fuel vapors in the passenger cabin, engine stalling, heater/defrost not working in winter, damage to the engine from fuel contaminated oil. all questions had no answer from either honda usa nor from the dealer. after ~ 600 miles of additional driving, the problem is back as the oil is over-full again. it is looking like the oil will need to be changed every 800 miles of driving. we remain concerned about the health and safety risks of the vehicle due to the fuel accumulating in oil problem. we assume that the gasoline is accumulating in the oil during engine running useage of the vehicle; so injector spray is wrong rather than a fuel-line leak.
Just bought a new 2018 crv exl i've had it less than 2 weeks and put 600 miles on it, there was a smell of gas in the cabin when my wife and child were driving in town. when they got home i realized it was from gas getting into the oil. when the oil dipstick was checked a strong smell of gas was noticeable and the oil level read high on the dipstick. took it to honda the next business day and they confirmed what was happening. honda dealer contacted honda tech support for assistance with the issue, 5 days later dealer called and said car was ready for pick up. once there dealer said there is no current fix for the car and honda was working on a tsb to fix the issue. they did change the oil, but after driving it for a few days i already smell gas in the oil again. this is not acceptable. the dealers hands are tied with no fix available, i called honda customer care and opened a case with them. case manager has yet to contact me with any news. i feel this is a major safety hazard not only from smelling gas in the cabin, but also from gas in the oil and potential fire hazard if the gas oil level becomes to diluted.
Noticed fuel odor in car and when i checked the oil it was overfilled, i thought, then noticed it ran off the dipstick like water. it smelled like pure gasoline and was red brown in color. car has 2054 miles on it. reported to my honda dealer and had the oil and filter changed. they, roseburg honda, took my problem seriously and began researching online for other information in reference to this situation.
Gas mixing in my oil and my heater quits in the morning as the car warms up.
Abnormal oil dilution causing excessive wear and tear on the engine. car talking long time to warm up. not running smoothly. foul smell of gas in the cabin
Tl* the contact owns a 2018 honda cr-v. while the vehicle was in operation, fuel mixed with the engine oil. the contact stated that the same failure occurred with his previous cr-v, which ruined the engine. krenzen honda nissan lincoln (2500 mall dr, duluth, mn 55811, (218) 727-2905) changed the oil, but the failure recurred. the contact stated that the failure occurred mostly in cold weather. the contact stated that he filed a complaint for the lemon law with his state's attorney general's office, but had not heard back. the manufacturer was comprehending oil changes. the dealer stated that the manufacturer would not want to talk to the contact once he filed a complaint with the attorney general's office. the failure mileage was 5,000.
-gas leaking into the oil confirmed by the local dealer. "approximately 1/2 quarters extra". -oil level is confirmed to be above the plastic indicator reaching to the metal part of the dipstick way above the normal level stated on the (owners manual).
Gasoline leaking into the oil, fuel odors in cabin, engine hesitancy
There is gasoline leaking into my oil. there is over 1 quart of oil in my 4 quart oil pan. the oil level on the dip stick is 1/2" higher than the maximum level on the dipstick and the oil reeks of gasoline. honda has tried, but failed to fix this. i can smell the gas in the cabin and when it is parked in the garage. i contacted a major oil company if the ratio of gas to oil would cause a problem and he said it was "alarming" i am concerned about the odor of gas, specifically the benzene which is present in gasoline. i am concerned about a possible fire too. we have had the dealer change the oil two times now even though the vehicle is almost brand new and was not supposed to have it's first oil change until 10k miles on it.
We purchased our 2018 honda crv in august of 2018 and soon after found out shortly after that there was a known problem with gas getting into the oil in the 1.5 l models in the years 2017 and 2018. when i checked the oil soon after the purchase i noticed it appeared to be a bit high on the dipstick. i decided to change the oil myself at about 1500 miles and found there was 7.5 quarts when the actual amount should have been 3.7 quarts. within a few days of changing the oil i noticed the oil was up higher on the dipstick again so i made an appointment at wilde honda for service. i was told there would soon be a fix for the issue and they changed the oil. i brought the vehicle back a couple weeks later to have the fix done to the vehicle. i took the vehicle home and soon after found the oil higher on the dipstick again. i took it back to honda service again and they changed the oil but did not check how much oil was actually in the engine. i pulled out of honda service and it immediately appeared high on the dipstick but i went home with the vehicle. i waited a week or so and changed the oil myself and checked the amount of oil which was 4.7 quarts so 1 quart over. i called honda service about the issue and they said they can do no more to help and suggested i contact honda or go through mediation. i have never had a vehicle with an issue like this and i see it is pretty widespread and not just in the usa. i guess i will work through mediation and see what can be done. we'd really like to just trade it in for a new model that does not have this issue. should have bought the toyota rav4 instead.
Engine oil smells of gasoline and been change twice since purchased new. current mileage 4,891 miles. first oil change at 2,819 miles, second at 4,620 miles. within a very short period of time engine oil starts to smell of gasoline. vehicle used locally and on highway.
This car has suffered from oil dilution with gasoline since it was purchased in august 2018. i have taken it to the dealer who changed the oil at my expense and claimed that increasing oil in the crankcase is normal and should be expected. the oil level increases about 1 quart for every 2000 miles driven and the oil smells like gasoline. this problem happens at all ambient temperatures, and regardless of whether the vehicle is traveling in short trips or extended highway drives.
At about 810 miles on odometer, i checked the engine oil and it smelled like gasoline. i brought the car to dealer 2 times and left car there for 3 days the second time. service manager said that this gas smell is normal in the engine oil. i also noticed oil is turning black and the level is rising (due to gasoline entering the crankcase. dealer drove it about 200 miles and when i got car home, the smell of gasoline in oil was worse and the oil level was above the full mark (due to gasoline entering into engine oil. this poses a very dangerous threat of an accident because the engine could seize or the gasoline in oil could start a fire. i called honda and they said that this is normal.
After driving my crv less than 500 miles the oil level is above the full indicator line and has a strong smell of gasoline. i've changed the oil three times in just under 2000 miles and each time the oil level rises again. i've eliminated short trips allowing the engine to run at least 20 minutes at full temperature and that has done no good. i've followed honda's suggestion to drive it in sport mode which also has done no good. this problem started immediately after purchase and has continued. i've called several honda dealers and they offer no assistance other than offering an oil change at $69.99.
Severe oil dilution in 1.5l turbo engine. live/ drive in warm climate (new orleans). level on dipstick continually climbs upward to greater than 21mm above full mark which translates to 24.7% dilution. we do not drive short trips...engine temperature gauge is up to normal within 3 blocks from our house and about 3 minutes after startup. we drive almost exclusively on interstate highways
Purchase new with 11 miles. at about 100 miles, filled gas tank, checked the oil level. i smelled gasoline on the dipstick. removed oil filler cap and smelled gasoline again.
2018 honda crv-ex - strong gasoline smell in oil - total mileage 1600. took crv to dealer today to check gas smell in oil. tech confirmed strong gas smell in oil and very black and runny (thin watery like). the tech indicated that this was not his first like experience with the new crv - he said he'd experienced other ones. they changed the oil and filter with full synthetic oil. i requested and received a sample of my old oil along with documentation. the service manager indicated that he hadn't heard anything about this problem. anyway, we will change our oil very often until this issue is hopefully, safely resolved. we're very concerned about the "fuel in oil" issue.
Tl* the contact owns a 2018 honda cr-v. while operating the vehicle, the odor of fuel was present inside the vehicle and the check oil indicator illuminated. upon inspection, it was discovered that the oil dip stick reading was extremely high and the odor of fuel was also present in the oil. the vehicle was taken to the local dealer (sierra honda, 1450 s. shamrock ave, monrovia, ca) and it was confirmed that the odor of fuel was present in the oil and the oil dip stick reading was excessively high. the dealer also noticed that the oil color had darkened. the contact was informed that the manufacturer was aware of the failure, but no repair was presently available. the oil was changed and the fuel odor was no longer present; however, approximately one month later, the fuel odor returned and the oil dip stick indicated that the oil level was very high. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not assist. the failure mileage was 4,100.
Tl* the contact owns a 2018 honda cr-v. several weeks after an oil change was performed on the vehicle, the contact checked the engine oil dipstick and noticed that the engine oil was extremely dirty. the vehicle was taken to luther brookdale honda (located at 6800 brooklyn blvd, brooklyn center, mn 55429, (612) 424-7830) where fuel was found on the oil dipstick. the contact was informed that it was a normal occurrence. the contact was concerned about the fuel and oil dilution. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and provided case number: 09533542. the approximate failure mileage was 4,495. *bf *tr
I have the oil dilution problem with my 2018 cr-v. i bought the car in march of this year, brand new. i currently have 9000 miles and had to have the oil changed four times due to gas mixing with the oil, strong gas odor and oil over full. i have also had an issue with all the warning lights coming on at once and cycling over and over, this has happened at least three times. i contacted honda america and was told this was a normal occurrence and no harm will come to my engine. i did not know this was an issue until the check engine light came on.
New 2018 cr-v was purchased in february. with some reported issues with oil dilution reported on 2017 cr-v models i kept a close watch on the oil level. no issue before or after the 1st oil change from the dealership. (6000miles) this week after a random check on the oil level i discovered it was way above the normal level oil level with definite gasoline smell. i took it to a honda dealer and they checked the vehicle over (10000 miles) after comprehensive testing including each individual cylinder they could find no issues. (honda tech line was involved)the dealer service rep commented that they had no fix for the issue and that there was no recall. i was given a free oil/filter change and sent on my way. i took the car to work after the dealership and then home (40 miles total approx.) after sitting overnight i checked the dipstick today and the level is right where the orange plastic indicator piece meets the metal dipstick. already above normal again. oil was very soupy dripping from dipstick (normal 0-20w oil does not do this) so just overnight the problem has returned, not in a cold climate. no excessive idling since yesterday after the oil change. i think the reason more people have not reported this is many have not checked their dipstick/ oil level. and why would you if you are driving a new car. oil is breaking down the lubrication of the oil. this is a very serious problem especially for a car with a turbo which depends on that oil. ticking time bomb for honda and sadly for me as well.
Purchased car new in january 2018. noticed heat didn't get very warm, and would cool off at a traffic light, or on a downhill. winter in delaware was not severe in january. around 2200 miles, i checked my oil, found it about a half quart high, and smelled strongly of gasoline. oil is also very dark, nearly black. 1/2 quart extra gasoline in oil sump of 3.7 quarts, means about 12% of the oil was gasoline. this presents 2 major dangers: fire hazard from excess gasoline in oil, and engine failure, due to lack of proper lubrication. i've brought my car in to honda twice, and 2400 & 4000 miles, both times, they contacted honda techline, and provided an oil and filter change free of charge. i am minimizing my use of this vehicle, hoping honda will port "the china solution" to the us soon. as honda doesn't seem to be acknowledging the problem in the us or canada, it will likely be up to the regulators or lawyers to force them to take the problem seriously. nhtsa - please step up, require a solution, before we start finding burning hondas on the roadside.
Engine sounds - car is under 3,000 miles as of nov. 2018. purchased june 2018. air conditioning did not work right after june 2018 purchase. returned 3 times to get repaired and ever since this "repair) to fix the a/c, the engine has been very loud on acceleration from a full stop or to increase speed when at a low speed. do not recall this loud engine at purchase. loud engine sounds disappear at cruise. had it to the dealer three times for this purpose and the dealer (salmon, repair department have stated, "nothing wrong, this is the way the new crv turbo engines sound).
My 2018 honda crv touring with 1.5l turbo engine had had a problem with the smell of fuel fumes in the interior cabin since the time of purchase. when you turn the air on with the air coming from the outside vent, especially when first starting the car, the smell of gasoline fumes is apparent, which is also a serious health safety concern as inhalation of fumes is definitely bad for your health. every time i check my oil level, the dipstick shows the oil is overfilled beyond what the dipstick measures and the oil smells heavily of gas. after researching this online, i found that there is a problem that many 5th generation crv owners are experiencing with the 1.5l turbo engine with too much gas getting into the oil and the smell of fumes in the cabin. this is what is causing my oil level to rise to unsafe levels that will accelerate the deterioration of expensive internal engine components. i contacted honda and they performed a technical service bulliten related to this issue on december 4th 2018, where a module related to the air conditioning was replaced along with the engine oil and some software upgrade was installed. this changed absolutely nothing. i still am experiencing the sickening smell of gasoline fumes in the cabin as well as the dipstick showing more oil than it can measure along with the smell of gas coming from the oil.
Overfilled oil level with gas.
Tl* the contact owns a 2018 honda cr-v. when the vehicle was started, an abnormal vibration was coming from the engine compartment. additionally, the brake, tpms, park, adaptive cruise control, and several other warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed. an appointment was made with mills honda (8465 mn hwy 210, baxter, mn 56425, (218) 825-7525) to have the vehicle diagnosed. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failures. the approximate failure mileage was 12,000. the vin was not available. *tt
The engine oil has a strong gasoline smell and gets dirty soon after an oil change.
Oil level in crankcase rising from fuel dilution
