During light acceleration there was a shuddering around 20-30 mph. it lessened after i decelerated. it continued for around 8 months or longer. i had it checked by a nearby mechanic. he printed off some information to have the software updated and to take it the a honda dealer. i called the closest, dealership for an appointment. i was told they would do a diagnostic test, costing me $120 and then pinpoint the problem. i was told they would replace the fluids even before i explained the issue. after 3 1/12 hrs and over $500 dollars i was on my way home. breakdown on the bill. labor amt $490 parts $69.14 and of course $39.13 tax. i feel they took advantage of the situation. i know there are many owners of honda cr-v having the same issue and that honda have not stepped up and took responsibility for the issue, if i have any other issues with the shuddering i will not purchase another honda, ever. i owned a honda civic and had no problems with that car for as long as i had it. so time will tell if the issue is completely solved. also, they wanted to replace many items that was not the reason for my visit.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 honda cr-v. while driving various speeds, the vehicle hesitated to accelerate and all the warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the timing chain needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the dealer and manufacturer were not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 150,000.
I have a 2013 honda crv at about 65,000 miles. the vsa, eps, and check engine light came on all at the same time. i noticed that the car was running rough while idle and would not pick up after stopping. i researched this problem and notated that it seems to be a common issue for the timing chain to stretch. i have been meticulous about maintenance on my vehicle. notably timing chains should last the entire life of the engine. i have taken my car to the honda dealership and been advised that indeed the timing chain needs to be replaced along with the vtc actuator (notably another common issue with these models). the price to fix this is outrageous considering the low miles and meticulous maintance by the honda dealership. i believe an investigation needs to completed as this issue can cause serious damage to your engine with little to no warning that something is wrong.
Engine makes loud grinding noise when starting cold similar to what others have described as the vtc actuator problem. car has 83,000 miles on it. fyi.....this is my second honda cr-v.....i traded in the last one at 78,000 miles when it was doing the same thing!!!
For the past couple of months the engine makes a loud grinding noise when i start it. mostly in colder weather. i've discussed this with another honda cr-v owner and the same thing started happening with them.
Driver on highway when check engine, malfunction indicator and eps lights came on. the car lost power and driver pulled off to side. checked car, restarted car but would not go over 20mph. car towed and mechanic reported #4 spark plug oil fouled, but no psi in #4 cylinder. towed to dealer but problem not fixed and engine not running. dealer did not offer any help.
Makes crating sound when it is cold started
The vtc actuator makes noise and needs to be replaced. i has been happening for a long time.
The honda cr-v 2013 we purchased on 7/3/18 has been experiencing a vibration while in motion between aprox 10 mph -30 mph. it took place on city, town and county roads we have not driven on highway yet. it vibrates similar to driving over rumble strips in the highway to inform you of lane edges.it seems to stop if you let the foot of accelerator pedal. it is somewhat unnerving and can be a little scary to our young driver.
Heavy vibration in grear when come to a stop ....feeling vibration on the seat...took vehicle to dealership say they aware of the problem but ther no fix from honda at this time....dealer state lot of customer have the sam complain but nothing they can do at this time.....
Makes grinding noise at start up. similar to other complaints with vtc valve issues
On cold start the engine makes a loud grinding noise. my vehicle only has 28,500 miles on the car.
Pulled into driveway and was a couple of feet away from the garage door, going only one or two mph,put foot on brake to stop and suddenly the car lurch forward, press as hard as i could on brake pedal, but car kept moving forward till it hit garage door, then everything stopped. you can see by the marks on the driveway that the front tires were spinning forward while the rear tires were locked ( because i had hard pressure on the brake pedal) and slid a few feet, we have taken pictures of the car and driveway and will try to send to you. i am fearful of driving this car because if it happens again while at a traffic light or parking lot or similar, it could be life threatening
While coming home into my driveway as i came up the driveway i was stopping by a the front door the car suddenly lurched forward just before i came to a full stop, and hit garage door, which shook me up as my foot was on the brake pedal, i had pushed the pedal hard but still the car moved forward, afterwards we moved the car back and you can see where the front tires are spinning forward and the rear tires are locked up sliding forward showing that indeed my foot was pressing hard on the brake pedal, called my local dealer and had the car towed to them, they have not been able to find anything wrong with the car. as it is now,i am afraid to drive it because if it happens again and i am at a traffic light or parking lot something worse could happen or get injured. we took pictures of the car, garage door and all the tire marks, will try to send these to you.
Have 2013 honda cr-v and when go to start it after sitting overnight makes loud grinding noise for 1-2 seconds. dealership says it's the vtc actuator and is a know problem but not recall has been issued. they want 500 bucks to fix the issues since car of course isn't under warranty and won't work with me at all. very unprofessional in my opinion of honda with an issues that is know and common.
Excessive oil consumption. no oil leak and not burning oil. mechanic noted excessive oil use when he saw it was 2 quarts low on oil within 3 months use after a oil change. mechanic found no cause for this so it must be inside the engine or drive train. car is used for local flat driving. no towing, racing, mountains, etc.
At the stationary position, heard a loud grinding sound every time i start the car. dealership stated it is a vtc actuator failure.
Engine makes a rattle noise on cold start up. car was taken to dealership and was told the vtc actuator was defective and was replaced under warranty at 83000 miles. this was in august of 2017. it is now january of 2018, car now has 90355 miles and the rattle noise has returned. will take the car back to the dealership this week to see what will be done next. from what i have researched, honda has not come up with a real fix. this problem has been going on for several years for previous models. come on nhtsa, put some heat on these guys.
I've previously reported the vtc actuator problem o this site and american honda with zero satisfaction. the problem has continued and i get conflicting information from my dealer and american honda. the original complaint number was 10783068. upon re-inquiring with american honda they've informed me that this problem has not been associated with my vin which again is incorrect based on dealership feedback. honda has refused to permit me the ability to speak to a customer care superior or to share with me the actual resolution of other known vtc actuator problems. please investigate and deteremine exactly why honda is being permitted to ignore this known and widespread problem?
On march 11, 2017, i was traveling from fort lauderdale to naples florida on interstate 75. i had the car on cruise control and traveling around 70 mph. i took the car off cruise control and then pressed on the gas when the car's engine deaccelerated the car severely. i pressed and let off the gas pedal several times as the car continue to deaccelerate and almost caused an accident with an 18-wheeler. a similar circumstance has also occurred but at 10-20 mph when accelerating from a red light and needing to take my foot off the gas and then press down on the gas to continue. the engine continues to run but does not accelerate the car. if the high speed condition occurs again, i will need to put the car in neutral to stop the car's engine from severely deaccelerating the car.
Check engine light and several other warning lights came on dash. car has 77,806 miles. dealer said timing chain is stretched. i have had all recommended maintenance performed on the vehicle and am the only owner. service department said i should get oil changes more often than recommended. this should not be considered a normal 'wear' item at this age/mileage.
Passenger side has heat, while no heat on driver side of vehicle. the 2013 honda crv has less than 24k miles and is already having a plugged/faulty heating core. these problems should not be manifesting till much later in a cars life. the biggest problem is that i live in a cool state during the winter and the windshield is frosting up while driving causing significant visibility loss. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 honda cr-v. when the vehicle was started, the contact observed an abnormal noise from the engine without warning. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 35,000. the vin was unavailable.
Judder, akin to driving on the rumble strips alongside a highway. happens when slowly accelerating between 20-30 mph. purchased the vehicle in 10/2016.
Loud, grinding sound upon starting the vehicle, after sitting overnight.
Every time i start my car in the morning and sometimes other times during the day it makes a terrible grinding noise
A loud grinding noise lasting a few seconds after initial start up after car has been sitting, i.e., a 'cold start.' my honda 2013 crv-ex-l has had this problem from day one, brand new! it's intermittent but happens usually on a cold start. after quite a few visits to dealer they act perplexed and never can duplicate the condition! it actually is the vtc (variable timing control). honda has had this problem for several years on various models of their vehicles, has never fixed the problem nor contacted affected buyers but has continued to build and sell these vehicles with a known defect with no fix! their engineers are aware of the problem, but of course the same engineers say it causes "no damage to the vehicle!" shame on honda, it only ruined their reputation! people stare at you and ask "what is that noise?" when you explain, it puts honda and their vehicles in a poor position i.e., loss of reputation and sales. i did intensive investigation on my own, just 'google the problem, and you will be taken to 'you tube' and many other sites showing the problem. take to the dealer a video and a copy of the numerous complaints on this and other sites! you must prove the problem exists!! i called honda america 2 days ago to complain and found out honda just this year, 2016, finally came out with a 'fix!' it is for the vtc (variable timing control) . my car finally is at the dealer being repaired. honda knew all along of this problem at least from 2012 through 2014 and even earlier models! a recall should be mandated to make the repair!! again shame on honda, i personally will never buy a honda automobile again. the frustration, embarrassment, time running back and forth to the dealer, etc. has worn me out!! remember their is now a bulletin to honda dealers with a 'fix.' but they must duplicate the problem! be sure to take a video with sound!!
The vehicle is burning 1.5 quarts of oil at oil change intervals. i notice a rattling that lasts about 30 seconds at start up,in the morning or when is cold; after the rattling, the engine sounds normal.
I own a honda cr-v 2013 awd with 60,000 miles. i'm the second owner. i purchased the car from carmax in 2016 with 27,000 miles. after several months of owning the vehicle one morning i hear this loud grinding noise lasting a few seconds after initial start up of vehicle when stationary. this sound has continued on and off at all different times of the day.
Purchased the car used from a honda dealer, still under the 30,000 millage warranty. timing chain began slipping after a few months as weather got a bit colder. brought it in and they said 'they knew what the problem was'. picked up the vehicle and within a short time the noise came back again. this went on. i googled and found the the timing chain was a chronic issue in these vehicles. feels like its loose. i brought it into another mechanic and was told its the timing chain and should be under warranty. can you help? lots of these cars are recalled but my particular vin isn't on the list which is very peculiar.
1-takata inflator the passage airbag light comes on and off randomly. this does not make me feel comfortable. there's a recall for cr-vs up to 2012 for this?? 2-start up noise - at least once a day when i start up my cr-v it does this very loud grinding sound. note: during winter it was every time i started the car. the noise did not start until after the warranty expired. took to dealership they stated its the valve that's a part of the head/timing chain system. i've done my research and both these problems are very common with honda cr-v.
Bought car fall 2015 w/21000 miles. first very cold day (below 0 f), i noticed the heating system as well as defrost barely worked after driving 8 miles on a country road. this repeated itself several more times before i discovered tsb 14-063 where they discovered sand had been inadequately washed from the blocks after the casting process was completed. it then settled in the heater core blocking the system from adequate defrost and heat. my dealer app't was disappointing in that they essentially told me i was lying and nothing was wrong with the system. they claimed the temp probes showed a 1/10 degree between the 2 vents - of course, i never saw the results. my warranty expires in less than a month when it will then be my responsibility to flush it myself or pay them to do it !! it's now spring so i feel that waiting for a recall could possibly put me in jeopardy as visibility during cold weather will be and has been an issue. i have a copy of the tsb and see it's supposedly a 3 12 hr obligation, but the flat rate they show is 1.1 hours which encourages their techs to do haphazard work. dealer was buerkle honda, st paul,mn and my app't was in early january 2016.
When it's cold outside and if the car has set for more than a few hours, the car makes a terrible rattling sound when the engine starts.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 honda cr-v. the contact stated that while starting the vehicle, the contact heard an abnormal noise from the vehicle. the failure recurred twice. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the vtc actuator needed to be repaired. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 18,500....updated 02/03/16 *bf grinding noise during cold start up updated 4/23/18*jb *cn
Vibration during acceleration at or above 1500rpm
Vtc spins after ignition starts: dealer states that this problem is not to be addressed per honda manufacturer policy.
Engine grinding noise when crossing up and down structures like bridges. especially on highway while taking exits. at a times it feels like the engine is about to die. this grinding noise is disturbing my confidence to drive the vehicle safely.
My mechanic from four stars auto care, long island, n.y. had mentioned that there was a problem with my cr-v 2013 timing camshaft which is causing the grinding sound when i start the car (the mechanic says that the oil has drained from the camshaft and is not lubricated ' which caused the grinding sound). usually, this happens if the engine has not been started for more than 3 or 4 hours. i believe this is the vtc actuator in the car that is making a grinding sound. i just spoke to a lady 'nicole' from honda city, 3859 hempstead turnpike, levittown, ny 11756 who acknowledged that there is a defect in the vtc actuator in the 2013 cr-vs but does not have an answer when honda will have the vtc replacement. she said, 'honda is working on a new vtc, but does not know when they will have them available.' she also said that, they stopped replacing the current vtc model and there is a defect.' all i want to know if they will still replace this when my car goes out of warranty in a few thousand miles? i also want to know if there is a long term effect of the grinding noise to the camshaft or the engine and also the passerby's who looked at my cr-v after i start my car. i am going to contact honda directly' i am not satisfied with the answers and the service. i will definitely not purchase another honda if there is satisfaction to this solution.
2013 honda crv shakes at speed 30-45 mph during acceleration. shakes sometimes goes away when foot is removed momentarily and gas is reapplied. already made attempt to have issue fix at daytona honda dealership, transmission fluid was flushed and fuel injectors cleaned. shaking returned after a few weeks.
Vtc actuator is failing causing a grinding sound when starting the vehicle. honda has recognized and admitted to a defective part. continued to sell cars knowing the parts were defective. 2014-2015 hondas have the same issue. honda reports it is not doing damage to the engine or any components. they are offering no assistance in the matter.
Grinding sound upon start. probably the vtc actuator. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 honda cr-v. when starting the engine in colder weather, the vehicle exhibited an abnormal grinding metal noise. the failure recurred upon initial start-up in colder temperatures. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the vtc actuator was faulty. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 14,000. the vin was not available.
I had left my office about 10 minutes prior to pulling into a shopping center and was driving about 5 mph in the parking lot, looking for a parking space. i saw one and slowed down even more to barely moving, and was easing into the parking space with my right foot on the brake. just as the car stopped and i was getting ready to put it into park, the engine suddenly revved up and the car jumped the curb and hit a tree about 5 feet in front of the parking space at full force. it was like the accelerator had been pressed all the way to the floor. i was totally stunned. the entire front of the car was smashed in and radiator fluid was coming out of the bottom of the car. when this incident occurred, i was not talking on the phone; i was not drinking or eating anything in the car; i did not even have the radio turned on. i was not in an emotional state; i am not psychotic, homicidal ,or suicidal. i had both hands on the steering wheel as i had just made a slow left turn into the parking space and was barely moving, with my foot on the brake. i have gone on the internet to research anything like this occurring with other honda crv's, and there are numerous incidences cited involving the 2011 and 2013 models. it happens in very cold weather (freezing or below) , while the brake is engaged. it was in the low 30's at the time and my foot was on the brake. luckily, the tree stopped my forward motion, or i would have ended up driving thru the plate glass window of the ups store. other drivers have not been so lucky - some have been taken to the hospital, other cars involved, other people injured. i am absolutely terrified of driving this vehicle again.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 honda cr-v. when starting the engine in cold temperatures, an abnormal metal grinding noise emitted from the vehicle. the failure recurred upon initial start-up in colder temperatures. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the vtc actuator failed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 30,000.
I noticed a rattling noise during cold starts from the engine that continued well into the summer. i reported it to my honda dealer (bill page/falls church, va) and referred to the well documented vtc actuator problem reported on the internet based on video and audio similarities in the noises i was hearing. the dealer being aware of the problem refrained from any investigation or correction until they received a corrective solution from honda. i reported the problem to honda america and the dealer later in 2015 after my honda dealer technician reptd no solution has come from honda. i received a call from honda regarding my complaint suggesting the vtc actuator problem is limited to alaska and i should make an appointment with my dealer to investigate. as a result to a switch to synthetic oil at the dealer the noise seems to have gone. unfortunately this does not guarantee the original problem has not damaged the engine or won't reappear if i decide to return to conventional oil. the official position by honda vs. the dealer seems to promote a stand-off to compensate for a lack of a fully reliable solution in that the dealer is told not to initiate repairs for this problem until a solution is distributed by honda while honda claims the problem is not universal and is trying to minimize its scope; leaving consumers in the middle trying to make their crvs or other model hondas reliable while still under warranty. i will continue pursuit of a fix with honda america but feel nhtsa should pressure honda to address this well known and publicized fault with some sort of permanent fix. for a manufacturer who claims their vehicles are highly reliable honda apparent deception regarding this problem needs to be addressed and i hope nhtsa forces this action to occur. i also provided nhtsa with a copy of my 7/25/15 letter to american honda.
Awful grinding noise at a cold start no matter what the weather is. car is in mid atlantic region. each start comes with a grinding noise. mechanic can't find anything wrong. none of my other cars not make such a horrendous noise at start up. this sound was noticed not long after the car was purchased late 2014.
As i reported last year, there is a vtc actuator design flaw that creates a grinding noise when the temps fall below freezing and in some cases even above freezing mainly due to lack of oil pressure and the actuator not locking correctly. well, another winter has come and gone and there is still no hint of a fix from honda. they claim there is no damage occurring but any time i hear metal on metal i beg to differ. unfortunately at this point i am looking at options such as trading the vehicle in as i don't know what kind of serious damage is being done each winter with metal on metal grinding. honda sure has lost their prestigious claim of reliability in my eyes. sadly this will be my last honda product as they don't seem to address customer concerns in any kind of timely manner. *tr
From a stop. i speed up to about 30 mph and feel a drag and shimmy at that speed, then it goes away. the problem only occurs at 30 mph, i have watched you-tube for possible troubles.
On the first start of the day, especially cold days, the engine makes a loud grinding/rattling noise. the dealership claims that there isn't a fix for the issue. it claims that it is a design flaw and doesn't hurt the engine. according to them, the oil drains from the part overnight and the "noise" is caused by lack of oil to that part. as soon as the part gets oil it stops. (about 2-3 seconds) according to research i've done on the internet, the issue has been ongoing for several years without a fix and is somewhat common. i bought the car in april and didn't experience the problem until late fall. it took me months to prove to the dealership that there was a problem.shame on honda. i've owned honda cars and have been loyal to honda for 25 years, but no longer.
A year ago i noticed at times a noise like i am trying to start the vehicle with it already running. the other day on initial start it made a louder noise. the best i can tell is a problem with the vtc actuator.
