Recently reported SUSPENSION problems on 2008 Honda Civic

This is the third time my passenger side motor mount has completely broken off!!

Bought the car 2 days ago. did test drive it with no notable issues. i did not take it on the highway because i was not familiar with the area and the salesman insisted not to go on the highway due to road construction outside the dealership. so on the way home i did take the highway from the dealership following my husband out of the area until i got to familiar territory. then he got behind me. well while driving on the highway i felt the car swaying side to side having trouble staying between the lines. didn't feel right and when i would hit a bump the back end of the car moved all over the place. well when my husband and i got home i mentioned it to him and he said when he was behind me he noticed the right back of the car was bouncing up and down. with that said i have a 16 month old grandson that i intend to have in my car on occasion and it's scary to think that my car may not be safe for the road and/or put myself or someone else in danger. the salesman showed me the carfax report and services that were done on the car. but did not disclosed anything of what i am experiencing with the vehicle

The front motor mount has failed and is vibrating loudly. also, the cruise control button has failed @ 50k on 2 honda civic generation 8's that i own.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda civic. while driving at various speeds, the brake pedal was depressed and the vehicle made an abnormal noise. the failure recurred numerous times. the contact stated that the air bag warning indicator also illuminated continuously. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the compliance bushing fractured and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 73,000. the vin was unavailable.

Rear tires cup after only a few thousand miles. constantly replacing rear tires. honda recalled the '06 & '07 models for this but claimed they fixed the issue in '08. it doesn't seem to be the case.

One of the control arms, i believe it is called, went bad and cracked. the front ones went bad and had to be replaced, but were under warranty. these would be the arms that connect and hold the tires/brakes but not the suspension. i may have referred to them wrong, but they went bad nonetheless.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda civic. while the vehicle was stopped, it vibrated uncontrollably. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the front motor mount and torque struts needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 95,000.

The car was vibrating so hard that it felt like the motor was going to fall out. according to two mechanics this is very early for this type of problem in a car with less than 50000 miles. had to replace the lower rear engine motor mounts and the front right engine mount. *tr

Uneven tire wear on the inside tread of rear wheels. can't see the wear since it is on the inside so the tire looks fine on the outside but is worn so bad on the inside a blowout could happen easily. problem caused belt separation and extreme uneven wear. this is due to a defect in the suspension design. this is costing a ton of money in replacement tires and tires for this model car cost a fortune. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda civic. the contact stated that when the engine was powered on, the vehicle vibrated violently. the contact also mentioned that the failure occurred when in reverse. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 55,000. updated 9/4/14*cn the vehicle was repaired july 25, 2014. the motor mount failed. updated 1/5/2015 *js

Whenever performing a turn there is a clicking sound made from the rear of the vehicle. dealer unable to find anything through diagnostics. it sounds like there is a piece of metal broken somewhere that when going over a speed bump or turning it bumps or grinds against something. *tr

Geometry problem on suspension causes excessive uneven tire wear. the driver may be unaware of this damage because the outside of all the tires appear fine. if no close inspection of the inside tread of the tire is done, dangerous conditions can be overlooked. this puts the passengers of this car and anyone around it in danger. honda should recall and fix this problem immediately before someone dies if they haven't already

Excessive rear wheel wear(inside on both tires) causing premature replacement and possible tire failure. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda civic. the contact stated that the tires were wearing out prematurely. the contact was concerned that the alignment was wrong and there was a problem with the rear suspension. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing however, the technician was unable to diagnose the failure. the technician stated that the vehicle was working up properly. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 10,000. the current mileage was 36,000.

While driving home from work i noticed a slight wobble from the rear of the car. about a mile down the road i heard what sounded like a tire pop.what actually happened was my rear driver side lower control arm had snapped completely through, about 2 inches in from the bolt connecting it to the wheel assembly. honda has admitted to having a problem with their 06 and 07 model rear control arms not by issuing a recall but a service bulletin both in jan. and feb. of 2008. i believe there still was a problem in several 2008 models that were manufactured in 2007. i contacted american honda and the rep. there said they will not do anything about this problem. all the mechanics i have talked to have said it was a clean snap and that there was no rust involved. i think this problem deserves to be looked at closer than it seems to be. *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda civic. the contact stated while driving approximately 4 mph on snowy and slushy road conditions, the rear end of the vehicle lost traction and skidded. the contact was able to regain control of the vehicle. in addition, the rear end of the vehicle fishtailed on wet roads. upon inspection, it was found that the two rear tires on the vehicle had prematurely worn. the rear tires were replaced previously by an independent mechanic. six months later, the failure recurred. the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 50,000.

I had to have all four tires replaced on my 2008 honda civic lx at 34,658 mi. july 2010. when i brought my civic in for its routine check up, which i do whenever i'm at 15% oil life, i complained of a roaring noise from my tires. the honda tech guy said my tires were badly worn and suggested i buy new tires immediately. kuhmo tires, the brand i bought from honda, have a 60000 mi. warranty. that same roaring noise is back and i went in for my routine check up and was told that my tires need to be replaced at 61285 mi. december 31, 2011. one tech guy hinted that there have been problems with the rear-upper control arm causing possible problems with certain civics. if this is the case, i want it corrected, and i want my tires replaced at no cost to me. honda tells me they don't know what the problem is and will allow me to pay full price for new tires while they try to get me a 50% prorated reimbursement from kuhmo. i am not satisfied with this at all. this is a costly safety issue. there has been heavy rainfall in my area and my car hydroplanes. i told the honda service department this, and they said that it is because of my worn tires. i get my tires aligned and rotated on their recommended schedule. if there is a defective part that is causing the premature wear of my tires and is putting my life and the lives of my family as well as others on the road at risk, honda must take responsibility for this problem and correct it. *tr

The vehicle has defective upper control arms and flange bolts which cause the tires to wear fast and dangerously, as well at cause the car to shake in the back while driving. this is a defect in the car and honda will pay for it but only if the vehicle is still under factory warranty. by the time i bought the car and noticed the problem it was out of warranty. this is unacceptable! it is a defect! they should have to pay for it! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda civic. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, he noticed a loud popping noise. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they advised him that the front passenger axle was fractured and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and they offered no assistance. the failure and current mileages were approximately 105,000. the vin was unavailable.

Rear suspension causes tires to prematurely wear out. after approximately 10,000 miles, i have to replace rear tires because of flat spots. the shop where i buy my tires will not even rotate my tires because of the flat spots. honda has done nothing to remedy the problem. the noise resulting from the flat spots is obnoxious and it is obviously a safety concern. *tr

Premature tire wearout - extreme shake, especially ay highway speeds. dealer said nothing is wrong they were actually worn at 20k car handles horrible in inclement weather. based on other complaints, i expect this to be an issue every 20k until honda steps up and admits they have a rear suspension issue with the '08s. experienced severe vibrations/uneven and rapid tire wear, flat spots and cupping on rear tires within first 20k. replaced with four new tires, then experienced the same severe vibrations and symptoms at around 33k. tsb for '06-'07 describes same symptoms and new control arm to resolve issue. have taken car to honda dealer with this issue and they state that my '08 vehicle has the updated control arm and that car is "fine". obviously this is a wide spread problem for the '08 as well and the vehicle is not "fine". there are many more people listed on various internet auto problem sites that have encountered exactly the same problem as i have with the same make and model vehicle. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda civic lx. the contact stated that when driving at low speeds of approximately 5 mph and attempting a turn, the vehicle would exhibit a loud noise. the vehicle was inspected by a dealer and they advised her that the front driver and passenger axle was fractured and needed to be replaced. this failure recurred three times prior to the most recent failure and the axles were repaired. the vehicle was not further repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and they opened a case on the contact's behalf. the failure mileage was approximately 30,200.

The front suspension on my car was not sufficiently lubricated from the factory, leading to "popping" and "clicking" (both very loud and noticeable) when turning. the dealer says the civics were not given sufficient lubrication and the suspension is not built correctly. *tr

The suspension of the cars is not calibrated correctly per my dealer. this leads to premature tire wear which could lead to failure of the tires. *tr

There is a well documented defect in the honda civic between years of 2006-2009 for the rear upper arm suspension. there still is a defect in the geometry by .75 degrees and is the reason for early tire wearing. all four of my tires started to wear earlier than usage performed on tire. around 20,000 miles there was early excessive wear noted. i couldn't figure out why there was so much wear on my tires. i had to replace them at 30-34000 miles and believe it is due to the defect in the rear upper arms. i am concerned that this is safety issue and someone needs to look into this and demand honda to make a recall for this. many consumers are complaining about this issue and class action suits have been filed. despite the replacement arm, there still are documents that state excessive tire wear and replacement. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda civic hybrid. the contact stated that the rear upper control arms on both rear tires were defective and caused the rear tires to wear prematurely. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was told that they could not have an alignment because the parts were defective and causing the rear tires to bend inward abnormally. the failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 32,000.

2008 civic (purchased new) currently has 29,000 miles and just installed my second new set of tires. i rotate the tires on a regular basis but the rears continue to wear prematurely on the insides. the dealership checked the alignment and "fixed" the out of tolerance issue but wasn't willing to replace the tires. car is still burning through tires every 15k, very noticeable road noise, and mileage continues to run 25% below sales quotes. vehicle is extremely difficult to drive on packed snow without fishtailing. *tr

Rear camber not in spec caused pre-mature inner tire wear posing a potential safety risk. rear camber is not adjustable. honda has not offered a fix. *tt

This vehicle was having a continuous roaring noise from the rear when the vehicle is being driven. took to proctor honda of tallahassee and mentioned the problem. honda dealer noticed the rear tires were beginning to cup and rotated tires to address sound issue and blamed the tires as the malfunctioning part by recommending a tire replacement. at that time the tire toyo spectrums were only 1 year and 9 months old having being installed on 3/2009 , had a 65k tread life warranty. the 2006 and 2007 models of honda civic had technical service bulletins issued regarding the rear upper control arms causing uneven wear of rear tires (cupping) service bulletin number : 08-001date of bulletin : feb 08, 2008 ,nhtsa item number : 10024687. this honda was purchased on 11/2007 and was obviously manufactured during the 2007 year. the proctor honda mechanics believe that the rear upper control arms have already been replaced on this vehicle but i have no documentation revealing a date any such work was done. i have contacted the previous dealer hennessey honda and the previous owner and neither have had these upper control arms replaced. now in may 2012 these tires that were rotated with the tires on the vehicle that were not cupping in 2010 are now severely cupped ( high /low areas) while the front tires are not cupped at all from my inspection. seems isolated to the rear of vehicle. the rear cupping occurs primarily on the inside part of the tire nearest to the vehicle but it is severe. this vehicle has already had the lower engine block replaced due to cracking coolant passages which i might emphasize that the 2007 honda civic also has issues with. this is my mom's vehicle and i want her to be safe driving this and do not want to keep buying new tires ( of a different brand) only to have them prematurely worn and cupping of tires caused as well. please investigate this issue ???? *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda civic hybrid. the contact stated that the rear upper control arm was causing the tires to wear prematurely and the rear tires were replaced at extremely low mileage. the contact was able to secure an appointment to have the upper control arms replaced. the manufacturer was not contacted in regards to the failure. the contact stated he was aware of other owners of the same year, make and model with the same failure. the failure mileage was 24,000.

Extreme vibration in rear suspension of 2008 honda civic ex. third set of tires (current odometer reading is 64k miles) due to "cupping". honda dealer states that cupping due to lack of rotation of tires and denies any history of suspension issues for this model. *tr

Rear tires wear prematurely and in a very odd fashion (uneven, hi-lo bands across the tread) causing a significant thumping sound and vibration. the first time i was told the rear shocks were the cause (@55-60k miles). the shocks and tires were replace and the same exact problem has occurred again! 90%+ of my driving is done on the highway and not poorly maintained back roads. it is very clear that there is an issue with the rear suspension on these vehicles that honda needs to be forced to acknowledge and address. *tr

On june 20, 2010, my wife took her mother on a trip to the midwest. when she started back, the shaking became extremely bad, and the noise was deafening. the closest honda dealer was middlekauff honda, twin falls idaho. they said she was running on the steel belts of the 2 rear tires, and that they would need to be replaced. he said he didn't have the honda parts to correct/repair the defective honda parts, but he would do a 4 wheel alignment, and with 2 new tires she should be able to get home, then take the issue up with our local honda dealer. the cost of this service, and (inferior) tires to the vehicle was $269.31. on july 16, 2010 we took the car (mileage 26234) into our dealer who replaced the defective parts and did another alignment at no charge to us. our service manager asked why twin falls honda did a 4 wheel alignment, as it did not fix the problem without replacing the defective honda parts. we told him the twin falls honda dealer said it should be done. our local service manager told us that the honda civic hybrid is very particular about the type of tires you put on it. the delta majestic tires put on in twin falls, besides being noisier, may reduce gas mileage. he said the original dunlop tires would have been best. we are extremely disappointed with honda usa regarding this defect, the damage caused, what it has cost us, and loved ones lives put in jeopardy! this was caused by a known defect, per honda service bulletin 08-001. we are asking that honda usa live up to it's reputation for customer service, without us needing to seek further recourse, and that; our unnecessary money spent for the 4 wheel alignment and 2 inferior tires in twin falls be refunded to us, and all four tires be replaced with the original dunlop model. *tr

Honda: when make tight turn, left or right would hear or feel a popping or clunking noise, after driving over bumps, coming from the front suspension. *pe *tr

At 78,000 miles i began to notice unusual road noise. ( humming) less than a year later i'm experiencing horrific road noise (peaks near 55 mph) and now unusual tire wear. tires are rotated, balanced and front end aligned regularly. i thought maybe bearing problems. local mechanic checked and said no. tire dealership thought the same, checked and said no. honda dealership said tires needed rotation to eliminate the problem. (did not help) back to tire dealership, they believe i need a kit for rear cam arms. noise so loud i sometimes use ear plugs to drown out sound/not safe. *tr

2008 honda civic hybrid - rear tires wear excessively even after service bulletin tsb 08-001 has been done. rear tires become noisy with the inside wear and cupping. eventually, for a non-observant driver, there will be a blowout. *tr

Premature tire wearout - extreme shake, especially ay highway speeds. dealer said nothing is wrong, even though they asked me if it was shaking/vibrating. tires will not pass inspection & need to be replaced. (they were actually worn at 20k) car handles horrible in inclement weather. based on other complaints, i expect this to be an issue every 20k until honda steps up and admits they have a rear suspension issue with the '08s. *tr

Currently i have 32,277 miles and don't drive it, it's not safe to drive. i take a bus :) 1# trans locked at 60mph on hwy and caused almost a fatal crash! at 23,000 miles. car was able to drive up to 15mpg having appx. 6000rpms. car left at dealership and only pcm software was upd. no lockups are occurring, but trans is weaving, harsh start/stop often!/unexpected shutdown. dealership found service bulletin #08-014 (harsh engagement), upd. the on board computer and symptoms are much worse than previously. lower mpg ( 25-28 ), much worse performance, unexpected battery discharge, weaving, low accel. dealer duplicated problems, but said "it's ok" and problems is untouched. since they updated the system, the hybrid option is not kicking in as before. prev. i was able to drive slowly only on hybrid, now i can't. no actions are taken to resolve the issue. once they changed the ima batt pack, but this did not help and i see not a difference. complained again, and absolutely no response. brakes are malfunctioning. brake fluid is missing, dealer said "[xxx], it's a mystery". depending on outside temp, battery charge level and car temp breaks work diff! occasionally while slowing down, the battery level reaches full and you must press the pedal as hard as you can to stop. this has caused small crashes and once brakes did not work, or i pressed too lightly ( cold outside with full battery ) and unfortunately i couldn't stop on time and ran over a pedestrian. she is badly injured and suing my insurance company! dealer rec. to "change car, better to buy not a honda and don't bother them if nothing is broken." police report ready to present. these are only the major issues i'm having. i would need much more space to write 20 pgs essay. minor issues: - super fast tire wear ( after 20,000 ) and now again at 32,000 - not working climate ctrl system - check engine, ima light, brake system and airbag lights on. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

2008 civic ex coupe. had to replace both rear tires at around 20,000 miles due to a slightly visible flat spot on the tires that was causing a progressively loud roar. on initial inspection, the tire dealer advised me the tires looked fine as they still had plenty of tread and appeared to be even wear. however, on closer examination i was able to point out the flat spots visible on the center of the tire. tire dealer could not explain cause. when i had replaced the second rear tire, the tire dealer thought that the belting had slipped. i just assumed i had a bad set of tires. the wear did not look like typical damage caused by misalignment. the same problems has again appeared with about 25,000 miles on the new rear tires. i now have discovered that honda has service bulletin 08-001 which describes my exact symptom and requires the upper control arm to be replaced.. honda has not issued a recall on this. honda should notify owners and tire dealers of this possible failure so consumers are aware on how to correct the problem. besides, the extremely loud noise that eventually appears, the vibration will ultimately lead to complete tire failure. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda civic lx. the contact stated that the rear tires were wearing prematurely and would sometimes lean to one side. the vehicle was taken to a dealer and they advised her that the rear control arm needed to be replaced in order to balance the vehicle. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and they offered no assistance. the failure mileage was approximately 40,000.

The front and rear suspension has sagged about to and inch from new and the rear suspension has a rough ride. the rear suspension absorbs bumps badly. with very little bump and slow rebound and all at only 18 months at 23,000 miles. took it to a honda dealer and they said there was nothing wrong and it was at factory specs. i am a five day a week work commuter with 35 mile round trip a day and it is only my self with no luggage. for the car to perform that bad so soon. makes you rethink in honda's reliability performance and trade in for another brand. *tr

The rear tires have worn out at 12000 and again at 23000 miles. two different manufacturers of tires and all rotations and alignments were accomplished on schedule. tire manufacturers will not accept responsibility and honda has stated that they are not responsible for tire failures. there are many more people listed on various internet auto problem sites that have encountered exactly the same problem as i have with the same make and model vehicle. the wheel alignment shops that i have contacted insist that there is a problem with the suspension of this vehicle and weight distribution (heavy in front, light in rear) compounds the problem. *tr

Purchased a 2008 honda civic from local dealer new. this vehicle had alot of road noise for the get go..but saw online that road noise was one of the problems with honda's. had my car regularly serviced at the same dealership over the last year. last month dec 2009 road noise became excessive and took car into dealership. they looked the car over and said tires had excessive wear because i had not rotated them every 5000 miles. car is a year old has 20000 miles and has had road noise all along. dealer refused to replace tires and denied problem. car now has nearly 30,000 miles and is undrivable at this point. haven't replaced tires as it is not affordable. but car is unsafe to drive. dealer said suspension problems noted in 2006-07 models has been fixed, but problem seems rampant in the 2008 if you look on the internet as well as safety reports yet nothing has been recalled, and honda is not standing by their product. now i am still paying for a car that sits in the driveway and is unsafe to drive...cant sell an unsafe vehicle..please investigate this problem. *tr

Rear tires wear out prematurely due to rear suspension problems (upper control arms? incorrect factory rear wheel alignment specs?). at only 80,000 miles, i am on my fifth set of new tires -- all due to "abnormal wear patterns on rear tires." a mechanic at the local firestone store suggested that the rear wheel toe-in be set @ 0 degrees instead of the stated factory specs, but honda has already recalled my 2006 civic lx and fixed the rear suspension upper control arms in a recall (its rear tires have worn out prematurely, also, but this particular recall did not cover my 2008 civic, which seems to have a worse case of the same problem). why did the recall not cover my 2008 civic, too?). *tr

The rear tire wore out fast, they were cupping and vibrating and noisy/thumping starting around 25,000 miles. at 30,000 miles i could not wait anymore. i bought 2 new tires for the back, the front tires were still ok. then i took it to round rock honda for alignment. everything was good then, i had the new tires at the front. after another 20k miles, i replaced the 2 old tires with new ones. i kept balancing and rotating the tires. but at around 70k miles the rear tires started to wear out again. i rotate and balanced the tires. now at 88k miles, the car starts to vibrate and noisy again at 65mph. the tires were supposed to be good for 60-70k, but the uneven wear showing up around 30k . i checked w/ discount tire, they claim civic has problems w/ tire wear. so i checked on internet, found the issue about honda civic premature tire wear. i went to round rock honda, but they won't replace new control rear arms and do alignment for free. i have to pay around $450.00. i filed this complain first. i'm planning to replace the old two tires again for now. the look for honda to replace new control rear arms and do alignment for free. i called another honda dealer to verify, they are claiming there is no issue w/ 2008 civic lx sedan, which is not listed in the tsb 08-001 (2006 and 2007 only). so i guess there is not enough complains about this tire wearing fast issue yet. if honda keeps playing dumb, my last resort would probably be selling this civic and consider buying a toyota instead of a honda. *tr

I was driving at about 65 mph when my car suddenly started swerving to my left. i pressed my brakes and i heard a little explosion, but i didn't think anything of it. my car started swerving even more and i was not able to do anything because it was out of my control. my car spun and hit another car and then spun again and ended up crashing into the left side divider. when police arrived at the scene, they noticed my wheel was popped out. the wheel malfunction must have caused the accident because the wheel popped out even before i hit the divider. *tr

1. had car tires rotated every 7500 miles at oil change time. at 23300 after rear tires were put on front in rotation, tires would bounce and were noisy and there was vibration. tires were cupped and ruined. dealer said need new tires and alignment. got new tires, at costco, and alignment at dealer. dealer gives paper work and still out of spec. original tires. issue on 2006 thru some 2008 honda civic hybrids was rear control arms issues. still an issue, premature wear and cupping causing potential for accident. honda dealer says nothing wrong, but this is an issue. others on internet also show same problem with premature tire wear. *tr

Defective wheel suspension on honda civic hybrid leading to excessive and unsafe wear on tires with corresponding road noise. dealer seemed puzzled why tires should be worn so quickly, suggested rotation, which we had already done according to their specifications. dealer offered no compensation for tire wear, as they stated that tires were not under warranty. after reading numerous complaints we realize the necessity of adding ours as nothing will be done to correct this defect in design unless everyone with this problem speaks out. dealer seems oblivous that this problem exists.

Excessive inner-edge rear tire wear (outer edge and middle area tire wear seems normal and has plenty of tread left after the inner edges are excessively worn). tires replaced at 18,000 miles, 31,000 miles, and need to be replaced again at 40,000 miles (oem dunlop sp31 tires were used each time). dealer replaced rear control arms at 18,000, advised to rotate the tires more often at 31,000 miles. dealer mostly seems unable to resolve, or even acknowledge, the issue. *tr

Purchased 2008 civic in may 2008 and have had regular service done at dealer. tires worn unevenly and some cupping of rear tires occurred. noticed at last service appointment. car had 29,700 miles at that time. since tires were rotated at that time i have noticed aggravating road noise and steering wheel vibration. dealer balanced tires which seemed to help for a little while, but did not cure the problem. *tr
