Problems with 2007 Honda Civic SUSPENSION

On average, the 2007 Honda Civic starts to “feel” problems with the SUSPENSION and its various aspects after 48 569 miles.

Components Affected by SUSPENSION Issues

We have classified the 115 complaints from 2007 Honda Civic about SUSPENSION into the following categories.

REAR 125 FRONT 5

Recently reported SUSPENSION problems on 2007 Honda Civic

Rear tires are wearing down faster than the front, yet it's front wheel drive.

Can't get dealer to replace airbag (passenger) on recall. they say parts are backordered. service bulletin, 08-001 was never informed of and now cost is borne by user to replace faulty suspension parts

My rear lower control arms need to be be replaced with the correct ones stamped "c". honda dealers in southern california are refusing to correct the mistake at no cost to me. please help!

It's been going through tires quickly. back wheels converted top side inward. had to change wheel bering. fixing to replace upper arm control arm. it has 65614 milage on it.

Went to my local honda dealer because of heavy vibration while driving. dealership informed me that i needed to replace my rear control upper arm because my tires were cupping badly. i have already replaced tires yearly because of uneven wear. i called corporate honda, since i am out of warranty they will not reimburse with parts and labor despite 2013 settlement regarding this matter. it is a safety issue regarding tire suspension and honda is turning a blind eye.. *tr

This is related to suspension...three issue i have observed 1. the tires on my civic 2007 have uneven wear...i changed my tires about 2 years ago and could see the uneven wear on the old tired..that time i ignored it assuming it to be an alignment issue...however the new tires are also wearing out unevenly and that after after proper alignment. the last time i got tires rotated the mechanic suggested there is likely some faulty suspension. now i firmly believe it. 2. i hear a pop/cluncking sound when going over bumps. 3. i hear a click/pop sound coming from the front wheels when turning.

Excessive inner tire wear. wheel is out of alignment, but not adjustable. fix is to purchase adjustable arms, then align. *tr

Rear upper control arm kit needs to be replaced. currently causes uneven, rapid tire wear. i bought the car new in 2007 from this dealership and have it serviced by this dealership since then. a service bulletin 08-001 was issued 1/22/08, but i was just told by the dealership on 8/18/14 about this. they refuse to cover the cost of repair. *tr

Original rear upper control arms (oem) need to be replaced due to known camber misalignment from factory. this well-known issue from honda (on 2006 - 2009 civics) causes uneven wear and shortens the lifetime of tires. the only option available to bring the alignment specs (camber) back into a safe range is to replace the upper control arms and tires. *tr

Bad control arm causing premature.tire wear. *tr

Tires have worn unevenly due to rear balance arm/ strut assembly issue which have caused the wheel assembly to canter and be toed in, which in turn has also damaged the suspension/springs. car now leans to driver side in the rear. car has had 4 sets of tires and has less than 90,000 miles. due to uneven tire wear the car is extremely loud (ear damaging loud) and vibrates (shimmies) at speeds above 40mph. we were told by a honda dealership that only an after market adjustable balance arm will correct the problem. american honda refuses to take any accountability. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 honda civic. while driving at any speed, the rear suspension caused the tire to exceedingly vibrate from the rear end. the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 68,000.

I experienced asymmetrical cupping and rapid wear on my tires due to a defective rear upper control arm. this is a known problem for honda (they issued a technical service bulletin in 2008 regarding the issue and there was a class action lawsuit in 2013). since the deadline to file a claim with the class action suit has passed honda will not pay for the repair of this defective part.

I am having premature tire wear due to a faulty rear control arm. please help! my car hydroplanes and the vibration on the steering wheel is horrible on the highway. *tr

While driving in a residential area at approx 20-25 mph, there was a loud bump as if a rock had hit the underside of the car; shortly the steering was off kilter -- to go straight had to keep the steering wheel turned 30 degrees right; loud rubbing sound; pulled into a driveway and then could not back up -- found that right front tire was bent in, so that top of tire abutted the wheel well. car towed to dealer -- found strut bolts on right front tire were loose. car had been serviced one week prior: replaced failed starter and performed oil change and b service with inspection of brakes and tire rotation. *js

I just had to replace the tires for the second time on this car. the car is expiring uneven tire wear. this does effect braking of the car as well. honda has admitted that the rear control arm is to short effecting suspension and tire wear. this is dangerous because the visible part of my tire looked fine, plenty of tread and about 38000 on a 90000 mile tire. the inside of the tire was so worn it actually had a hole worn in it. this wear issue could cause a tire to fail while traveling at a high rate of speed. please help the owners of these vehicles get a recall from honda before someone is hurt. *tr

Was advised of uneven tire wear (cupping) and brought car to tire store for alignment and possibly new tires. tire store (also repair shop) was unable to perform alignment because of problem with bent camber arms. i paid approx $700 to replace. (note: i own another 2007 civic which had same problem and paid for same replacement/repair). repair shop said that this has been a problem with hondas. though i my repair shops conscientously check tech bulletins, honda did nothing to make me or the repair shops aware of this problem., i have seen other postings with similar suspension problems and believe that honda needs to step up and own it. *tr

Rear tires tends to wear out faster due to design defect in upper controller arm. drivers will be unaware of wore tread wear towards the body side posing a risk to loose control in some circumstances especially during wet conditions. in addition, value of the car depreciated due to paint fading and honda knowingly denying any defect in the quality of the paint used as cost cutting tactic during 2007 early recession.

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 honda civic. the contact stated that the control arms causing the inner tires to prematurely wear. the vehicle was taken to a dealer, who diagnosed that the control arms needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 75,000. *tr

Took my honda civic for schedule maintenance as usual, then i was told that car needed front axle repaired. my car has only 49, 159 miles. when searching online for similar cases, i found out this to be a known problem with the 2007 civic. the issue i have with honda is that why honda didn't recall the 2007 civic for due repair of the problem right after the problem was detected? i don't recall receiving any communication from america honda motors and/or any recommendation from the dealership during the last 5 1/2 years that i took my car for service. p.s. - car has not been involved in an accident (yet). *tr

Replacing several sets of tires despite rotation and dealer maintenance. passenger side tires experiencing excessive wear. during service, dealer suggested replacement of upper rear control arms and 4 wheel alignment. took to non-honda mechanic for 4 wheel alignment, but mechanic said upper control arm assembly had excessive negative camber which could not be adjusted to proper setting. mechanic replaced with honda parts, but still could not adjust camher to correct 0 setting. vehicle unable to set to proper specifications. found that issue appears to be the same as that detailed in honda service bulletin no.: 08-001, also detailed in nhtsa id number: 10024687. *tr

Excessive noise from rear end of vehicle unrelated to normal higher noise from all season tires. the noise is so bad that passengers cannot converse in the car with the windows closed. excessive unusual wear on tires requiring frequent replacement. honda put out a service bulletin 08-001 feb 5, 2009 about this problem but has not issued a recall. i think that honda should do a recall or offer to pay something toward the corrective action they mention in their service bulletin. a rear upper control arm kit, new tires, alignment and labor charges are needed to be done and parts will need to be shipped to me from the us so i can have the repairs done where i am stationed here in germany. i'm frightened to take the care out on the autobahn. thanks. *tr

I have had my vehicle for 2 years now. in that time i have put only 20000 miles on the vehicle. i have had to replace my tires twice already on the vehicle due to uneven wear on the tires. the camber of the tires is affected by the rear control arms. this also caused the rear suspension to wear, which i have already had to replace on the vehicle. when breaking my steering wheel shakes affecting my steering. this is caused by the uneven inner tire wear on this vehicle. i am concerned for the safety on this vehicle and i believe other similar vehicles might have the same issue. it is also become a quite expensive problem for me to have to deal with on this vehicle. to whom it may concern, thank you! *tr

Design failure of the rear control arm that is too short resulting in improper camber setting causing abnormal wear of rear tires.... excessive wear on inside of tires and cupping. 2 sets of tires in 43000 miles. had to replace with after marked "adjustable" camber arms. *tr

The tires on my 2007 honda civic kept show bad wear and had to rotate every 10,000-15,000 until couldn't do it anymore, bought several sets of tires:: solved the problem buy paying almost $900 to fix the arms on the rear end. said thing is honda knew and knows about this problem but wont do a recall... good news is after all my sets of tires and $900 dollars my car is now getting good wear out of the tires. *tr

Passenger side tires experiencing excessive wear on inside edge. took to mechanic for 4 wheel alignment, but mechanic said upper control arm assembly had excessive negative camber which could not be adjusted to proper setting. mechanic indicated assembly needed to be replaced. found that issue appears to be the same as that detailed in honda service bulletin no.: 08-001, also detailed in nhtsa id number: 10024687. *tr

Rear tires have abnormal wear which is causing vibration and noise due to a faulty rear control arm. this may cause safety problems. *tr

I have a new set of tires and i am surprise when you start moving it makes noise that seems coming from the wheels/tires and goes away when you slow down. it's more audible in the rear, i don't know if its the suspension or rear control arms that wear out during the years. *tr

I have found out that the reason for my irregular wear on my tires has not been alignment problems but a problem that honda has had with not having the right rear upper control arms. i have went through multiple sets of tires and alignments before finding this out. i contacted honda after this find and they are not willing to help in the cost to repair this. *tr

The rear wheels had excessive and uneven tire wear on the inside of both tires, because of the rear upper control arm being too short, causing the camber to be out. this in turn, caused misalignment and excessive tire wear. i had no warning of how fast my tires were wearing out, and they almost wore to the steel belt, which could have caused an accident. i regularly service my honda civic at the honda dealer for each oil change and inspection, but was not notified of any problems at the last service appointment. i believe this is a known manufacturer problem, that needs to be addressed and recalled to be fixed. *tr

Combination of the tires and the rear suspension geometry cause rapid or uneven tire wear?. it caused the car to have bad vibration, especially at highway speeds. *tr

I replaced the original tires on my 2007 honda civic at 49,749 miles. i thought this was a little premature, but the tread was getting thin so i went to discount tire on 12-28-2010 and had 4 new tires placed on the vehicle. after less than 19,000 miles on the new tires, the passenger-side rear tire was making a loud noise. the technician at discount tire inspected it and stated that the inside edge of the tire is cupping (or looks choppy) and this is typically due to bad suspension, wheel bearings or alignment. i took the vehicle to tom's auto repair and had it inspected for the wheel bearings and shocks and had a 4 wheel alignment done for $55.00. they stated the wheel bears and shocks looked fine and that the alignment wasn't that bad. i then took the car back to discount tire and they agreed to replace the passenger-side rear tire for the replacement cost of $13.25. the technician commented that the driver-side rear tire was also starting to show signs of the same wear pattern, i.e. cupping on the inner edge. the tire which they replaced is not available as it was disposed of by discount tire. i researched on-line and found honda had issued technical service bulletin # 08-001 back on april 11, 2008, with a revision issued on february 5, 2009. from reading numerous on-line consumer comments about this tire issue (which is directly attributable to a honda design flaw in the vehicle suspension), i get the feeling honda's fix will not actually fix the problem. *tr

I've had this car since new and it absolutely eats tires in the rear. the tire wear is not adjustable and eventually leads to premature tire failure. i've had this happen to me 2 times on highway driving, where the tire has had a blowout. honda is aware of the issue with a design flaw in the rear control arms that causes the wear, but refuses to fix the problem. they have redesigned the control arm, but it does not fix the issue. it is just a matter of time before this design issue kills someone from a tire related failure. you can't see the problem because it's on the very inner most part of the tire. it isn't just that it makes the tire bald - there is severe cupping and the tire is more worn in some spots than others. so even if you visually inspect the tire, by getting on your hands and knees and putting your head under the car, you could miss where the tire is almost worn through, if the car is sitting on that part of the tire. this issue is very dangerous! it makes rotating the tires unadvisable because it ruins all 4 tires instead of just the rear two. it makes it so the performance of the tires is considerably less because parts of the tire are severly compromised. *tr

Apparently cannot be aligned properly. i'm replacing 3rd set of tires within 50k miles. *tr

Excessive rear tire noise and wear. i have been informed there is a service bulletin on my rear upper control arms - they are not marked with a "c". (but see conditions under which i was informed, below.) i am having the new control arms installed on 9/2/12. (i had new rear tires put on, and an alignment performed, 8/28/12.) i spent approximately $500 on the tires/alignment. the estimate for the new control arms is approximately $350. i don't understand why i have to pay for this repair. i've noticed there are multiple complaints about excessive rear tire noise and wear (and subsequent need for rear upper control arm replacement) on honda civics of this vintage (2007). why is this only being treated as a "service bulletin" rather than a "recall". by the way, i wouldn't have even known about the problem if my husband wasn't concerned that the noise was a wheel bearing that was failing. i took it to honda to have them check out the wheel bearing and they blamed the noise on a broken tire belt. when i got home from the dealer i noticed the information on my invoice about the "service bulletin". they hadn't even mentioned it to me themselves! i have been a loyal honda driver for approximately 15 years. as a result of this issue, plus other things about the civic i'm just not crazy about, i will never again buy a honda product! *tr

3rd set of tires due to tires wearing unevenly due to rear control arm problem honda knows about. *tr

The front left suspension began to exhibit a metallic clunk noise when driving over bumps. the concern was that this problem would lead to a total failure of the front suspension system. a honda dealer assessed the cause to be a failed front suspension bumper stop, which has a honda service bulletin, number 07-078 (nhtsa number 10043607), dated march 2, 2012. this technical service bulletin was accomplished on the vehicle. *tr

Rapid tire wear occurred on the inner portions of both rear tires. the problem was discovered after noticing much road noise and having the tires rotated. two new tires were purchased and the rear upper control arms were replaced. the problem still exists to this day after consulting two different honda garages they both confirmed that the rear control arms were installed correctly and are within spec. both garages recommended replacing the tires again, but this is becoming very costly. the ride of the car over the last year has gotten significantly worse and now i'm noticing braking problems. the car hops in the back when applying the brakes at highway speeds. honda is denying the problem and has offered no compensation. *tr

I went to honda dealer for maintenance and found out that my rear tires are wearing prematurely and unevenly. i only have 38000 miles on the car and regularly maintained at honda dealerships. dealer suggested me to change all four tires for that and alignments + replace rear upper arm, which is causing uneven wearing of rear tires. however honda is not doing anything about this issue and they charges customers for all cost for prematurely wearing tires and cost for replacing defectively designed parts. i have searched online and many other customers are complaining about this issues and honda is unresponsive to the issue. *tr

The rear tires wear out unevenly due to defective rear control arms. *tr

Rear tires are cupping and they've become very noisy after 5,000 miles. problem first noticed: november 2011. the rear tires were always slippery in tight curves at normal speed. went to route 23 honda, nj for a check up on 02/16/12. they blamed my new tires (10000 miles old). charged me $96.25 for a 4 wheel alignment, no problem found with the rear wheels. i have asked them about service bulletin 08-001 (uneven or rapid rear tire wear) but they did not admit any fault. they've said my car does not need a repair as per sb 08-001 mentioned above. i have contacted (opened account with) american honda motor co. they did not call back. *tr

I am now on my 3rd set of tires for the rear of this car. it keeps wearing the inner rear tires until the belt becomes exposed and heat up. there is a danger that if gone unnoticed that one of the tires will rupture causing a blowout and a high speed accident! *tr

The tire dealer says rear tires are wearing prematurely and rear control arms must be replaced or new tires installed today will also wear prematurely. rear tires are cupping. this causes terrible road noise and a rough ride. honda issued a factory service bulletin to dealers in 2008 about the control arms having a design defect that causes tires to wear prematurely. however, they never informed their customers of this problem. i have burned through two sets of tires in 4 years and less than 80k miles. i just put the third set of tires on today. i only found out about the control arm problem by doing research on the internet. it appears several honda customers have had this problem on models 06-08. some have reported control arms snapping in half. since this problem took some time to diagnose, the warranty has expired. honda should be held responsible for this design flaw. *tr

Excessive and uneven tire wear....cupping. honda will not do anything since the car is out of warranty even though they issued a service bulletin regarding the rear control arms being faulty. *tr

Excessive noise at highway speeds caused me to ask dealer about this as one shop stated rear shocks were worn and needed to be replaced. dealer printed out service bulletin 08-001 which explained the problem about rear tires cupping and improper upper control arms being installed when manufactured. dealer has not said cost of incorrect part is covered, and i will have to buy two new tires, replacement cost of both upper control arms and four wheel alignment. this is a manufacturing error on honda's part and consumers should not have to bear the cost of part and tire replacements. american honda should recall and replace. many bona fide complaints on this fault, which contributes to personal and vehicle safety. most owners are unaware of this problem! *tr

My 2007 honda civic back wheel bearing failed. i seen on the web there is a recall on this car nhtsa campaign no.07v399000. i took the car to walker honda in alexandria louisiana for recall repair and was told there is no recall on this car. so i replaced the bearing myself. i would like to know is there a recall on this car and can i make honda pay me back for parts and labor on this repair. *kb

Since i got my car with 62,000 miles every time i take it to get oil changes every 3 months the tell me the control arms are bad and causing uneven wear on the tire tread... i get new tires and it only last so long before the car starts to shake because of the uneven wear not even going at a high speed... it makes it harder to stop due to the shaking which scares me when i have to stop suddenly due to other drivers or something in the road.. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 honda civic. the contact stated that both rear tires were worn prematurely. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer where the dealer advised that the rear control arm would need to be replaced. the contact did not have the rear control arm replaced yet stated that the rear tires could experience a blowout due to the defective rear control arm. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 28,000.

i began to hear a noise coming from the right rear of the car in april 2011. over time the noise progressively became worse. i recently noticed that the right rear tire has been wearing improperly. i checked online to see if anyone else had this issue. while researching the problem, every honda civic webpage and forum that i went to was filled with this particular problem (right rear control arm causing rapid wear of the tires). i found that honda had even sent out a service bulletin on 2-8-08 regarding this issue. i figured with this many complaints, there must have been a recall notice that i did not receive. in july 2011 i brought my civic to majestic honda of rhode island to have my vehicle checked and asked if there had been a recall. i was told that there was no recall but they did confirm the problem after performing a diagnostic which cost me $111.02. my civic needed a new control arm, 4 new tires, and an alignment. these repairs would cost an additional $1066.75 or more plus tax. i explained to them that, had honda just sent out a service notice to its customers when they first noticed that there was a control arm issue, we could have addressed the issue for only $455.00 -- the cost of a control arm and an alignment. my speech fell upon deaf ears. i could tell by their demeanor that they had heard my story before and did not care at all. all i got was, "we're not responsible; contact honda america." after writing to you, i will be contacting honda america. *tr

Approximately a week after buying lifetime alignment and 4 new bridgestone potenza tires in july 2011 at firestone, el paso, tx, my car started to vibrate in the road while driving at speeds 50mph through 60mph. after many research and diagnosis from honda parts and service shop, different firestone locations and local mechanics, the conclusion is that the upper/rear control arms, front and rear camber arm and bolts are defective as per honda manufacturers. my tires are excessively and unevenly wearing. i have already bought 6 sets of new tires in the last 12 months because of this honda issue, which they admit it is a defect made by the manufacturers. they released a service bulletin (service bulletin 08-001 dated april 11, 2008) that informs honda dealer shop of this issue/defect, but they refuse to take responsibility of repairing it free of charge. i believe that it is not fair that customers buying hondas have to pay for defective parts made by the manufacturers. i would like these defect to be solved and paid by them and i would like refund for at least the last set of tires that i recently bought and are already unevenly worn out (this makes it a useless tire). in case it is needed i have all the paper work that can be a clear evidence to this complaint. like me, there are other honda owners with the same issue. *tr
