SIDE/WINDOW 16 FRONTAL 11

Recently reported AIR BAGS problems on 2006 Honda Civic

Honda part#: 77900-sna-a01 (methode) -or- 77900-sna-a02 (furukawa) reel assy, cable. with the failure of this part, vehicle cruise control, radio controls and srs air bags failed. the cable reel assembly is the component that makes the electrical connection between the function buttons and air bag on the steering wheel to the non-rotating steering column. the ribbon cable inside this mechanism was completely severed on the vehicle. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 honda civic. when the vehicle was started, the air bag warning light would remain illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the wiring harness for the front passenger side air bag failed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 96,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 honda civic. while making a right turn at 15 mph, both the driver and passenger side air bags deployed without warning and the vehicle filled with smoke. as a result, the windshield cracked. the vehicle was taken to a dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 50,000.

The airbag warning light in my 2006 honda civic ex has been illuminating intermittently for several months. it started by illuminating perhaps 5% of the times i was driving, but now it illuminates perhaps 50% of the time. i have been in no accidents. when i brought the car to honda on 9-24 they could find nothing wrong. i brought it back again on 9-26 and they at first suspected a short in the wires, and said no hard codes were stored. after a more work honda reported that the driver's side front airbag needed replacement. it seems to me that a passive element like this should not fail after only 8 to 9 years. isn't this a defect?

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 honda civic. while driving over a curb, the seat belt warning indicator illuminated and the seat belt failed to retract. the dealer stated that all the air bags were disabled. the vehicle was repaired, but the air bag indicator illuminated intermittently. the manufacturer was not notified. the approximate failure mileage was 31,000.

Last evening 5/28/2014 at 10:10 pm my wife and i were running an errand when a driver from another vehicle pulled blindly across 2 lanes of traffic in front of us. due to the fact a semi tractor trailer combination was in the left hand lane, stopped, i was unable to see any vehicle in the suicide lane until he was in my lane of travel. we were driving at approx 35 mph when the collision occurred. my 2006 honda civic coupe hit a late 2000's jeep wrangler. impact area was to the right front of my vehicle and the right rear wheel area of the other vehicle. the seat belts worked as designed, but neither airbag went off. i have pictures of the car and the lateral accelerometer on the right front is hanging. this system was fully operational, and had no codes stored in the sdm nor any lights on the dash. the impact was less than 6 inches from the sensor. my query is to why the bags did not deploy. speed should have been great enough to cause deployment, as well as the area of impact. *tr

I recently just rear ended someone on the freeway who came to a very sudden stop in front of me and i was unable to stop in time. my car has $5,500 worth damages all in the front end (and is no longer drivable) from how hard the impact was, for the car i hit had a steel ramp on the back of it. my airbag did not go off and i now have a sprained neck, shoulder, and nerve damage shooting down my left arm. my seatbelt does not retract anymore it must have locked and every single person even my damage adjuster does not understand why my airbag didn't go off, for it should have! *tr

Returning home, i struck a parked vehicle in the roadway with substantial damage to my passenger front, suspension & fender. the air bag control module was even broken but no passenger air bag deployment. very fortunate that no one was in the passenger seat. serious safety concern & i need to know how this could have happened.!....updated 07/31/14 *bf

Lost control of vehicle trying to avoid an object on the highway. my vehicle hit the railing on the interstate and the air bags did not deploy. my vehicle was declared a complete lost as other damage to the frame occurred, and the drivers side front wheel came off. *js

6/2013 car accident i hit a parked car traveling at approximately 20-25 miles per hour. the airbags did not deploy. the company chosen to do the work (custom innovations in eugene, oregon) did not repair the motor mounts. which im very upset about and trying to deal with. after having the work done the car was taken to honda (kendall honda also in eugene, oregon) to have an assessment of my car diagnosed. the was the motor mount issue and other items oil change, transmission flush and the srs light was on. honda service dept. could not diagnose the srs and said they would get back to me. they never did. approx 1mo. diagnosis at honda, i was sitting in a park parking lot charging my phone in the car with it in the accessory position. i had been there about 10 minutes when all of a sudden the drivers side airbag in the seat and the rear drivers side curtain air bag deployed. scared the crap out of me and my dog. i suffered minor cuts, abrasions and severe bruising to my left elbow and tricep. i immediately went to honda. it was a sunday so only the sales team was there. i went again on monday only to be sent away, with a we will call you.....very dismissive and vague. then after calling 5-6 times they finally scheduled an appointment to look into it. afterwards, they didn't have much to tell me except that it would cost me thousands of dollars to repair and no they didn't have an answer for why the airbags went off. essentially i feel that the airbags should be replaced free of charge in addition to the srs sensors all being replaced because i have a feeling this was all due to the recall on the passenger seat occupant detection system.....which i did not know about nor have it checked prior to any of the mentions events. i am very concerned that there is a chance the other airbags may deploy at random. i also would like my car to have all the recalls completed. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 honda civic lx. the contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph, the air bag warning light illuminated as the engine began to operate roughly. the vehicle also began shaking violently. the contact then hastily exited the vehicle and failed to secure the vehicle in park. as a result, the vehicle began to roll downhill and crashed into an embankment. there were no injuries and a police report was filed. the vehicle was removed from the embankment by a tow truck and taken to a local mechanic where the contact was advised that the air bag module had failed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000. the vin was not available.

Tl* the contact owns a honda civic. the contact stated that an explosive sound came from the seat belt. the contact was no longer able to utilize the seat belt and took the vehicle to a dealer where nd it was determined that the seat belt tensioner failed. as a result, the air bag was no longer operable. the dealer explained that the air bag and seat belts were connected. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileages were 100,000.

I was in a front-end accident. air bags failed to deploy, causing injury. vehicle was totaled. *tr

Around may of 2013, i was driving to work when the srs side airbag light came on. that same day, i drove to a honda dealership, the servide department of which told me that all they could do was reset the light because they could not read the code. the service guy then told me that in the event the light comes back on, then i would need to replace the airbags. during that time, the light would come on and off. when off, the light would come on whenever i drove over an uneven terrain. i went to yet another dealership who could not tell me anything substantial about the problem because the light was off when i brought the car in. around mid-june, the srs light started coming and staying on. i called honda this morning to see if there was any recall and was told that there was no recall related to this issue and that i cannot be helped. i am taking my car in again to see what the problem is, so that at least i can pinpoint the issue. this is a safety issue in that it appears that with this light on, my airbag system is disabled. in the event i get into an accident, i will not be protected. this is essentially disturbing because my airbags have never deployed since i bought the car brand new. i do not understand why i have to pay for a faulty airbag system that has really never been put to use. i really hope that honda find a solution to this problem. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 honda civic. the contact stated that while in neutral, the front passenger, passenger side curtain and passenger rear curtain air bags deployed without warning. the contact was not involved in a crash. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was determined that the air bags needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure and current mileage was 90,000. *tr updated 03/27/13*lj

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 honda civic. the contact stated that another vehicle crashed into the driver's side of the vehicle. the air bags failed to deploy and the driver sustained injuries to the sternum and cartilage. a police report was not filed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the air bag failure. the failure mileage was 152,000.

This vehicle was involved in an auto accident in 10/2012 and was labeled as totaled by the insurance company. airbags deployed when car his railing on highway.

My passenger door was closed at a gas station and my passenger side curtain air bag deployed. there is no damage physically except for the air bags. *tr

The srs light will come on, stay on for days, and then randomly go off only to come back on randomly and stay for days. the dealership told me there is a faulty wire which grounds out the srs system which cuts all power to seatbelt tensioners and airbags. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 honda civic. the contact stated that the srs warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. an authorized dealer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that the warning light was indicating that the rear passengers were not wearing their seat belts. the vehicle was taken to the authorized dealer and the contact was then informed that the air bag system failed. the contact was also informed that the system failed due to a damaged wiring system under the front passenger seat. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but offered no assistance. the failure mileage was 101,000.

Srs light comes on and does not go off. codes 32-10, 33-10 hard codes will not clear. related to passenger airbag inflater and left side curtain airbag, respectively. there is a service bulletin on these items but, as yet, no recall notice. honda refuses any responsibility for repair/replacement of affected parts as it is out of warranty. should there be time limits on such items? *tr

2006 honda sedan going 70 mph on interstate hit a roadside post head on airbags did not deploy, left rear tire torn off by edge of pavement car spun to right, rolled on driver's side then roof, slid down highway. no side airbags deployed. driver had head neck and back injuries , front passenger had abdominal injuries, car had new rear tires 24 hours old, had been maintained by dealer with and oil change and inspection 24 hrs before the accident, car support posts were worn through roof had begun to buckle front of roof worn through, side panels on drivers side were scraped mirrors ripped off ,front windshield cracked but held in place, driver's door window broke away, all other windows intact, passenger side doors were jammed driver's door was able to open partially. trunk remained intact as did the rear passengers' area both were unharmed except for seatbelt ( and carseat) bruises. car was a total loss. *kb

Air bag inflator driver side malfunction.

Side curtain airbags of our 2006 honda civic deployed when the passenger door was slammed. *tr

The dash airbag inop red light went on and off then it just remained on. on occasion it would go on and off. the dealer diagnosed the left curtain airbag sensor was defective. i have the extended mechanical insurance and filed a claim. i returned to the dealer for repairs and it was a loose wire and some kind of clip installed to fix problem on 9-16-10. *tr

2006 honda civic ex the srs light stays on which disarms air bag system on car. took vehicle to dealer , they stated the opds unit was faulty. that make and model of vehicle has a recall which describes a sensor problem with srs system that could eventually lead to a whole system to fail. called american honda ,they responded that the recall had been made but could not produce any proof of paperwork to me because i was the second owner. i bought the car from a certified honda dealer two and a half years prior the only proof of any recall done was a rear wheel bearing done before my purchased is shown on records. the point is that the srs system has been identified as a frequent problem with my vehicle , american honda refused to fix on their dime because warranty expiration but the air bag system and components in that car has a track of not working properly. the car is under 73,000miles. this is a safety issue for consumers of their products! i have not done any repairs as of now. *tr

On june 29, 2010, srs light on 2006 honda civic was illuminated, indicating problem with airbag. honda advised that airbag detonator needed to be replaced. airbag had never deployed, car had never been in an accident. honda originally refused to cover cost of repair and then made "goodwill" adjustment to cover 38% of cost. the identical part failed on airbag on other side of car 2 weeks later. *tr

The 2006 honda was stopped at an intersection with the owner driving and the owners son in the passenger seat. there was a car stopped in front of them. the owners car was hit from behind and pushed into the front car. none of the airbags deployed. both front seat belts failed causing the driver to impact the steering wheel and the passenger to impact the dashboard. both driver and passenger went to the emergency room and were diagnosed with chest contusions. the seat belts remained pulled out (they didn't retract after the accident). the vehicle is being repaired and the owner has requested that all seat belt parts be turned over to the owner. *tr

Beginning in april of 2010 my srs indicator, airbag light, would come on and off while driving randomly. i brought it to the dealership and they stated the diagnostic that came up was for a faulty side airbag. it will cost me $1150 to fix, for which i do not have, and they stated faulty airbags were not covered under warranty. i have not fixed it and am going to try to have to warranty cover this. my car is a 2006 honda civic with about 59,600 miles on it. *tr

Was at a stop sign on sunday 5pm on driver's side window i went to close the window the window shot straight up off the track i was able to catch it before it hit ground the driver's side window is now unusable. *dt

My daughter had a front end collision on her 2006 honda civic with $7k in damages. the air bags didn't deploy. the body shop and insurance agent said it should have but the dealer said the impact wasn't hard enough. *tr

Tl* contactowns a 2006 honda civic. while driving 40 mph the vehicle was involved in an crash. contact stated that all the rear airbags deployed. contacts son was strapped into a safety seat. contact stated that her son was injured during the crash. the current and failure miles were not available.

My airbag deployed while driving under normal conditions at appx 30 mph 2006 honda civic w appx 30,000 miles drivers side curtain airbag and drivers seat airbag. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 honda civic ex. while driving approximately 45 mph he heard a loud popping noise, and then the front driver seat belt retractor system failed. next the "air bag" warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. after turning off the engine the front driver side air bag deployed without warrant. however he noticed that the "side air bag turn off" warning light intermittently illuminated on the instrument control panel . the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection. the technician was unable to determine the cause of failure. the vehicle was inoperable and has not been repaired for the malfunction. the failure and current mileages were 66,000.

Srs airbag warning light turns on intermittently. dealer states defect is bad crimp in wiring harness but will not consider warranty. repair cost is astronomical. *tr

The side and side curtain airbags deployed in my 2006 honda civic ex coupe on the night of friday, january 9, 2009 when my fiancee shut the door. i was still inside, about to get out. it sounded like an m18 going off. i couldn't believe what had happened. my car was turned off, nonetheless! i called the dealership that i bought it from on monday morning (as the service department was closed on the weekend), and they were going to charge me a $95 diagnostic fee even though my car is still under 36,000 bumper to bumper warranty. i brought it to another honda dealership, where is still sitting, because i am in a catch 22. honda claims there is nothing wrong with the airbag sensors; they are not defective. i filed an official complaint with honda america and they told me to consult my insurance. my insurance doesn't see how they can cover it. even with an attorney, a honda representative to the dealership says that honda will not pay for the repairs. apparently, they assume i am lying when there is clearly no physical evidence of an impact, and it is perfectly acceptable for airbags to deploy when car doors are tugged or slammed, even when the car is not running and keys are not in the ignition. it happens everyday! the technicians at the dealership contrived an absurd idea that my fiance and i must have been playing tug - of - war with the car door (me on the inside and he on the outside or vise versa). if that were the case, one of us would be battered and bruised. i arrive at my point. even if the door had been slammed, or been the obstacle in a game of tug of war, it is not acceptable for airbags to deploy spontaneously! if someone had been sitting in the passenger's seat when this happened, i can only imagine what would have happened. what if my future stepson or stepdaughter were in the seat? i am appalled and frustrated (to say the least) with honda's lack of responsibility and i will never purchase another honda again (and i have always owned one). *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 honda civic. while driving approximately 5 mph, the front passenger side air bag deployed without warning. after the failure occurred, none of the seat belts functioned. an investigator from her insurance company inspected the vehicle and stated that they would not assume responsibility because no damage was done to the vehicle to warrant the deployment. the dealer and manufacturer did not assist. the cause of the failure has not been determined and no remedy has been provided. the failure mileage was 15,888 and current mileage was 16,000.

I own a 2006 honda civic suburu blue in which there has been no recall. for air bag deployment. two weeks after my warranty was over, passenger side air bag went off, bruising my 250 lb male friend. driver's side air bag did not deploy. there was no accident involved, i was just driving into a driveway. both seat belts do not work. called my case manager and he said i would have to pay for it myself. i am disabled female and driving without seat belts that could result in a hefty fine. please advise. thank you. *tr

I was driving down a country road at about 55 miles per hour when my driver's side airbag went off without provocation. it sounded like a shotgun had gone off beside my left ear. i was stunned and my ear felt like it was full of cotton. there were no cars in sight at the time and no curbs. i pulled off the road after realizing what had happened. the car was full of dust and my seatbelt was so tight that i felt like it was crushing me. the side seat airbag had deployed as well. i took my 2006 honda civic to the service department at the dealership, where i was told that it had been set off by damage done to the underside of the car by merely driving over a curb, which happened about 9 months ago. honda refused to acknowledge that this was not the normal function of the airbag and refused to cover the cost of fixing it, although it was still under warranty. my insurance company refused to pay because there was no accident involved. honda's estimated cost of repair was $2787 and they charged me $51.29 to give me that estimate. my car is still not repaired. *tr

We were driving through a new neighborhood that was still undeveloped. the passenger side impact airbags deployed when i hit a raised sewer drain with my foot on the brake. i would estimate approx. speed of 10mph. the side airbag deployed and hit my wife in her head and arm. she incurred a headache and bruise on her right arm. the incident filled the vehicle with the airbag dust and i immediately pulled over as my wife was screaming and crying in pain. i cannot understand why the passenger side airbag deployed at such a low rate of speed and with impact only to the underside of the vehicle, which caused damage to the inside of the car pillars and injury to my wife. *tr

The passenger side airbags in my 2006 honda civic coup deployed for no apparent reason. the initial inspection from the dealership, where purchased ,(honda of lise) or the eventual repair shop who was recommended by hartford insurance could find no reason for the deployment. the only comment from honda of america was that it was not a "defect", no cause was given by any honda associate at any time. the repair shop (terry's in frankfort il), was very concerned because reloading the air bags was not an issue, but knowing whether the cause was resolved was an issue with them. they are a certified shop with hartford insurance. the vehicle had only 27,300 miles and was less than 3 years old. luckily the incident occurred at a very low rate of speed (5 - 10 mph), after pulling away from a stop sign. several week earlier we had driven from florida to chicago with no incidents. had this happened in a 70 mile per hour zone, what would have been the consequences? i have done some research on the internet and have seen the same issue with the same year and model. i have to ask if this had happened at 60 or 70 miles an hour - who would know what happened first - the air bag deployment or the accident? i have to admit, at that high of a speed - i don't know whether i would know for sure. when those air bags deploy, the noise is deafening, the car fills with gas and in my case - because my arm was on the arm rest, the back of the seat gives your arm a very painful whack. now what happens when it goes off on the drivers side at high speed??? i further question whether this has happened in the past, and people have lost their lives? who would be the wiser? a horrible accident where the air bags deployed, people were killed, but not in the suspected or assumed sequence. who would be left to answer the questions? i can honestly say that had this happened at interstate speeds that i may not know which happened first - the accident or the air bags. thanks. *tr

My daughter was the driver of a 2006 honda civic involved in a head on collision. despite extensive damage to the front end of the civic, the driver's air bag did not deploy resulting in head and chest injuries for my daughter. *tr

My vehicle was rear ended at a dead stop by another vehicle and then my vehicle hit the vehicle in front of my vehicle but the airbags did not deploy. only the driver was in my vehicle. other vehicles in the incident had their airbags deploy. *tr

My previous 2006 honda civic lx 2 door coupe was involved in a front and rear end crash and none of the airbags deployed. i was at a complete stop in traffic and was rear ended . the car in front and the car behind me both had their airbags deploy. the car behind rear ended me and then i hit the car in front of me and that car into another car in front of that and another car in front of that 5 cars involved. i contacted honda motors usa concerning this and they told me the reaction by my car was "normal" under the circumstances. my insurance totaled the vehicle. only up until now did i know where and how to file a complaint. i feel this was an error and a failure of the vehicle. luckily nobody was hurt in this accident. *tr

Driving north through intersection about 35-40 mph in kinston nc yesterday cloudy but dry day. an automobile was directly in path heading west. i slammed on breaks but still collided with the side of a small minata. point of impact was dead front middle. i recalled thinking to myself that it was not that bad of an impact because the airbag did not deploy. right at this point i was coasting to a stop when the airbag did deployed. a lot of good that did! i am concerned for others safety that the airbag on my 2006 honda civic did not deploy and have read other complaints on this site. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 honda civic. while driving between 45-50 mph, the front middle side of the vehicle crashed into the rear of another vehicle. the air bags failed to deploy. the driver was wearing a seat belt, but sustained pains in his right arm. a police report was filed. the front bumper fell off and the vehicle was towed and destroyed. the current and failure mileages were 25,000.

2006 honda civic rear broke loose. consumer spun out of control and hit the division wall. *kb the consumer stated the passenger air bag deployed, but the driver side did not. the rear tires were worn and there was light snow on the ground which may have contributed to the consumer loosing control of the vehicle. ohio traffic crash report # 10-0025-90. *jb

I was the driver of a 2006 honda civic and was struck in the drivers side door and received a head injury requiring six staples. no airbags ever deployed. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 honda civic. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 60 mph, the vehicle veered to the left without warning. as a result, the contact crashed into a tree and the air bags failed to deploy. the contact sustained a fractured ankle, a fractured nose and ribs, and a brain injury that required medical attention. a police report was filed. the vehicle was destroyed. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 18,000. updated 2/11/15*cn updated 10/2/2015*js

I bought my 2006 honda civic ex coupe brand new in november 2005, problems started to occur shortly afterwards for instance the airbag light had a malfunction and recalled the dealer didn't fix it the first time, very inconvenient, brake pedal was fixed before i bought the vehicle, there was a recall on that as well because could fall off and cause a crash. i have taken it in to honda service to get problems fixed and numerous times, been told that its normal or some other ?!@#$% they always gave me the run around, the service people are rude, mean and incompetent and ignorant. i have taken my 06 civic in a total of 8-10 times now to fix problems they never fix anything! interior trim is poor/poor altering from the factory, panels loose and popping out interior scratches too easily/fragile cheaply made ?!@#$% (still), front drivers seat wont retract all the way back anymore like it used to (new) weather stripping is lifting up by front windshield (still) various rattles from interior (still), undercoating/under body spray from factory is peeling completely off (new) door panel flexes and rpms rise when using windows/now seems to roll up/down slower than before (still/new) keep in mind im only at 11,000 miles too! honda and toyotas quality is going downhill very fast especially with the civic, crv, rdx, mdx, camry, tundra, highlander, landcruiser, yaris, and rav4. the last year before the redesign of these vehicles the quality was great, now it seems like honda and toyota are either teaming up together or competing to see who can make the cheapest and ?!@#$% vehicle with cheaply made materials and taking shortcuts, changed a suppliers or something, these problems are unacceptable for a new vehicle. *tr
