Problems with 2006 Honda Civic ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

On average, the 2006 Honda Civic starts to “feel” problems with the ELECTRICAL SYSTEM and its various aspects after 70 253 miles.

Components Affected by ELECTRICAL SYSTEM Issues

We have classified the 80 complaints from 2006 Honda Civic about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.

INSTRUMENT CLUSTER/PANEL 3 SOFTWARE 3 12V/24V/48V BATTERY 2 HORN 1

Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2006 Honda Civic

Im having the same issue that another recall on a similar model has recieved the dc-dc converter has a problem charging the 12v battery causing engine failure, power failure , stearing failure and abs failure. i am unable to turn on hazard lights because of it also battery will take u jump but will not keep the charge in the battery. i was driving home and on a flat street the car was losing all instrement lights the power stearing light came on as well as the battery light the abs light and the ims light. i had to force the wheel to turn to a safe location due to being unable to turn on any warning lights. i could have been hit by another vehicle. i was driving in city conditions. i brought my vehicle to the dealership and they say my vin number does not match the recalled one.

Micu fuse block with body control module 2265245 went out and i had to have it replaced, it was staying in the "on" position so it drained everything electrical (battery) wouldn't start, was stuck in "park" nothing electrical would work including the "key"

I have 2006 honda and its have( ima ) check engine light on snd i called for recall but unfortunately honda doesn't help me they said your warranty is expired i have 149k millage on

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 honda civic. while attempting to enter the vehicle, the doors on the driver's side would not unlock after the key was inserted. in addition, the alarm system did not work and the driver was unable to switch the gear shifter to the park position. the dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. the approximate failure mileage was 300,000.

My honda civic ex 2 door looses power then sputters in over driver

Should you happen to lose battery power, honda's "immobilizer" anti-theft system will lose its memory and unable to recognize the owner's keys. honda's solution is to have the car towed into the local dealer where the unit and keys need to be re-coded. this has happened to me twice in a year's time. not only is this costly, incredibly inconvenient, but a safety hazard should it happen on a road trip. honda refuses to do any accommodation or fix of this problem.

While driving my battery light came on the dashboard. i took it to the nearest autozone to get the battery checked. they checked the battery and the manager of autozone told me it was not the battery but the alternator not giving the car enough power. he told me not to drive it to long or i could get stranded. i was near a relatives house, while driving to my relatives house my a/c and radio which were on at the time turned off, and several lights of the dashboard came on. i was panicked but made it safely to my relatives house. a mechanic came to my relatives house, and discovered that there was a short-circuit, the wires were burnt and caused the alternator to crack. the mechanic said to me in shock that my vehicle could have exploded. the wires which are 'the engine wiring harness' had caught fire at the tip which connects to the alternator. the car could have caught fire.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 honda civic. while driving 10 mph, the vehicle lost power and failed to accelerate. the engine and the ima lights illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the voltage converter module failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 11v106000 (electrical system). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 120,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 honda civic. the contact stated that all the windows failed to operate, excluding the driver side window. the contact also stated that the check engine warning light illuminated and the defrost stopped working. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the failure was unable to be determined. the failure mileage was 110,000.

Honda part#: 77900-sna-a01 (methode) -or- 77900-sna-a02 (furukawa) reel assy, cable. with the failure of this part, vehicle cruise control, radio controls and srs air bags failed. the cable reel assembly is the component that makes the electrical connection between the function buttons and air bag on the steering wheel to the non-rotating steering column. the ribbon cable inside this mechanism was completely severed on the vehicle. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 honda civic. when the vehicle was started, the air bag warning light would remain illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the wiring harness for the front passenger side air bag failed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 96,000.

Another starter motor problem. car won't start. not the battery. there are hundreds of complaints with this generation of honda civics having cars not able to start up that's not a battery problem. *tr

6/2013 car accident i hit a parked car traveling at approximately 20-25 miles per hour. the airbags did not deploy. the company chosen to do the work (custom innovations in eugene, oregon) did not repair the motor mounts. which im very upset about and trying to deal with. after having the work done the car was taken to honda (kendall honda also in eugene, oregon) to have an assessment of my car diagnosed. the was the motor mount issue and other items oil change, transmission flush and the srs light was on. honda service dept. could not diagnose the srs and said they would get back to me. they never did. approx 1mo. diagnosis at honda, i was sitting in a park parking lot charging my phone in the car with it in the accessory position. i had been there about 10 minutes when all of a sudden the drivers side airbag in the seat and the rear drivers side curtain air bag deployed. scared the crap out of me and my dog. i suffered minor cuts, abrasions and severe bruising to my left elbow and tricep. i immediately went to honda. it was a sunday so only the sales team was there. i went again on monday only to be sent away, with a we will call you.....very dismissive and vague. then after calling 5-6 times they finally scheduled an appointment to look into it. afterwards, they didn't have much to tell me except that it would cost me thousands of dollars to repair and no they didn't have an answer for why the airbags went off. essentially i feel that the airbags should be replaced free of charge in addition to the srs sensors all being replaced because i have a feeling this was all due to the recall on the passenger seat occupant detection system.....which i did not know about nor have it checked prior to any of the mentions events. i am very concerned that there is a chance the other airbags may deploy at random. i also would like my car to have all the recalls completed. *tr

The civic would start for a few seconds and then shut down. the anti-theft immobilizer indicator light came. all three oem keys did not work. this resulted in the need for a long distance tow to the honda dealership, as well as $209 in repairs. i was told by the service department that the immobilizer module was bad and had to be replaced, along with suggesting a new battery. keys failing to work??? come on honda! of all things to go wrong with a car, this just shouldn't happen. on top of that you stick your customer's with a costly tow in the middle of the winter. what would have happened if i had been stuck in the middle of nowhere, stranded, simply due to my keys failing to work? it would appear your vaunted quality control is slipping the last few years. i noticed there was a "service bulletin" listed for this item, but no compensation forthcoming from honda. *tr

While driving at a low speed and using my wipers for snow, all if a sudden my wiper speed controls got messed up. i have no speed 1. just speed 2 and 3. and the wipers also wont park properly and mostly simply not turn off after a few cycles. *tr

History from odi # 10572660: 6-18-09 honda dealership did feb 2009 recall (replaced auto-tensioner pivot bolt & reroute belt) at 28,324 mi. 9-15-12 engine failed (48144 mi.) approaching stop intersection. subsequently would not crank to start. towed car to service station. 9-18-12 vehicle repaired -- due to broken pivot bolt, a new honda recall belt kit, including new bolt, belt, belt tensioner assembly & water pump pulley had to be installed. approximately 20,000 mi. after recall kit & new bolt was installed to prevent the pivot bolt from breaking, the bolt broke and stopped the car from functioning completely. had i been in higher speed traffic the results may have been disastrous. ----------------------------------------------------------- 12-20-13 car died approaching intersection -- towed for service. again pivot bolt had broken, causing cascade of events preventing car from functioning -- this time within only 7000 mi. after new belt tensioner recall kit & new pivot bolt was installed. when this occurs, the car is inoperative. this bolt has been replaced three times and broken twice. i am now afraid to drive car for fear of it ceasing to run at any time. honda internet forums specifically for the 2006 civic mention many similar occurrences. *tr

Within the last month, our 2006 honda civic on two separate occasions, with two different drivers, when the transmission was placed into reverse when backing from a driveway, did not come to a stop. despite putting our foot firmly on the brake, the car did not stop and continued in reverse. only by putting the transmission into drive did the car stop from continuing into reverse. on august 30, the car when placed into reverse gear when backing from a parking space, went forward instead. our car has been regularly maintained and serviced and never had an issue prior to this. we are deeply concerned that the car poses a safety issue, because when moving from a parked position, moves in a direction other than the one that the driver chooses, and did not stop when moving in reverse. this has occurred three times to date within the month with two different drivers. *js

Automatic transmission failure and electric coolant temperature sensor failure in 2006 honda civic ex. noticed change in driving feel over past couple of weeks--shifting was jerky, not smooth; seemed to rev slightly higher at times while driving. engine warning light came on 2-13-13 when starting engine. also, green light next to "drive" on the dash started blinking. took car into honda dealership the next day. was told that the transmission fluid was burnt, transmission had hydraulic issues, gears not shifting properly. new transmission installed. had all previous regular maintenance performed at honda dealership, on schedule. *tr

6-18-09 honda dealership did feb 2009 recall (replaced auto-tensioner pivot bolt & reroute belt) at 28,324 mi. 9-15-12 engine failed (48144 mi.) approaching stop intersection. subsequently would not crank to start.towed car to service station. *tr

My 2006 honda civic has stalled on me 7 times now. every time it stalls, i am at a stoplight or stop sign and at a complete stop. the engine goes into idle mode and when the light changes or i can go, i take my foot off the brake and try or start to press the gas. most of the time i don't even have the opportunity to press the gas pedal before the car stalls. the car completely shuts off. i have noticed the last two times that the car's ac was on during the stalls. before i restart the car there isn't an error code or anything displayed. i have taken my car to a honda dealership to have it tested and each time they connect it to a computer and tell me that there isn't anything wrong or they can't produce the problem. there isn't a fuel problem because i put shell gas in my car each and every time and i checked the air filter. i even had a technician at pepboys check the battery. pepboys said the battery was in excellent condition. i have researched the problem and others on the internet say that it could be the computer's idle speed may need to be readjusted and some say the idle air control valve is faulty. i mentioned the idle air control valve to the honda technician and they said that doesn't seem to be a problem. there is a problem because others have reported it and the car stalls. *tr

I was driving on i-635 in dallas in stop and go traffic just before the hwy 75 exit in the far left lane. there was an accident and construction ahead so traffic was moving very slow. my car began to vibrate slightly and then inexplicably stalled. i put it in park and then attempted to restart it. the car restarted fine but i was unable to move it out of park. after several minutes the traffic cleared and we were stuck and unable to move while sitting in the fast lane. i was petrified and called 911. after about 15 minutes i called 911 again and explained again that we were stopped dead in the fast lane of a freeway and needed someone fast. after about 30 minutes several police officers, including officer reyes, finally arrived and parked behind my vehicle to signal cars to move over. they attempted to move my car out of park as well but were not successful. they called a wrecker and my car was towed to lute riley honda. on feb. 10th, the service mgr at lute riley honda said the technician found oil in the pcm and that may have been the cause of the issue but he wasnt sure. he blamed the oil on someone spilling oil during an oil change but i said that was impossible since i hadnt had my oil changed in over 30 days. i asked if it could be related to the recall issues and he said no, all the recall issues had been taken care of. i drove the car back to houston and it was fine until yesterday when it repeated the same issue-the car engine would start but it would not move out of park. it was towed to gillman honda, houston, tx and they told me it was a bad brake switch and pcm. *tr

My 2006 honda civic lx clock light and heater keeps going out then the speedometer lights go off and it completely dies on me. i had the battery and alternator checked at 4 different places and they all said it powers up good. i was told it was my ignition switch. *tr

Fuel gauge operates intermittently. gauge may show as 'full' when empty; or indicate 'empty' when full. at times, gauge lighting is off and will not reflect either 'full' or 'empty' fuel tank. has also indicated as containing fuel in tank, when in reality is near empty, which may cause driver to run out of fuel without sufficient warning.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 honda civic hybrid. the contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the integrated motor assist light illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the hybrid battery was deteriorating. a new software system was installed in order to save the battery. the failure continued and the contact also stated that the vehicle did not always accelerate once the accelerator pedal was depressed. the failure mileage was 76,000.

Our 2006 honda civic ex would not start after driven to a park. when trying to start the car, the dashboard lit up and the starter made clicking noise, but would not start. while checking the battery, we discovered that the entire positive side of cable under the plastic cover was corroded out. police came and tried to help us to jump the car which was not working. we had the car towed to the nearest honda dealer piassa honda in drexel hill, pa which quoted us $1,300 for changing the entire battery cable harness. we were in a shock and refused the service, but had them replaced a new battery then driven home. by doing the research, we found this is a common problem with 2006 honda civic. honda purchased a batch of defected batteries which leaking out acid that corroded out the cable. i'm a die hard honda fan. my last 1996 honda accord had no issue and let me ride it over 330,000 miles with only minimum regular maintenance. my expectation of honda car is extremely high. i had my entire die hard us car family converted to honda. please do not let me down. sincerely yours *tr

My honda has been well taken care of. i have hand waxed it twice a year since i purchased it new in 2006. this past year, the paint on the roof and trunk began to peel off. the car now looks like its 20 years old and honda refuses to do anything about it. both visors on the car have broken 3 times, the trunk latch broke ruining 100.00 worth of groceries and the tires continuously warp due to a defect in the year model. now, after replacing the battery i cannot get the alarm system to stop sounding. this year model civic is such a lemon. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 honda civic. the contact stated that the vehicle was being serviced by an authorized dealer for an unrelated issue when the contact was advised that the battery cables were severely corroded due to the battery leaking acid. the technician advised that the battery cables were attached to a wiring harness and the entire harness would need replacing. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and stated that the contact would be responsible for the cost of repairs and they would not provide any further assistance. the approximate failure mileage was 74,000.

2006 honda civic lx overly acidic battery that caused a small fire and damage to the positive cable resulting in a $500 replacement.. i think that honda should have to pay for the replacement cable due to an inferior design. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 honda civic hybrid. the contact noticed that the battery was rapidly discharging and failed to charge fully, causing the gas motor to run longer. the dealer was notified who advised the contact to have a software upgrade performed. the contact did not inform the manufacturer of the failure nor was the vehicle was repaired. the current mileage was 77,300 and the failure mileage was approximately 77,000. updated 02/10/11 *bf the consumer stated he did inform the manufacturer of the failure and a warranty claim was made to the dealer and the manufacturer. the vehicle was given the honda software upgrade by the local dealer. since the software upgrade, the mpg continues in the 30 mpg range, down from the pre-failure mpg of 42 mpg. current, post-upgrade is measured over the last 200 miles by the vehicles the on-board mpg device. the battery continues to discharge rapidly, the rpm idle increases from about 750 to 1500. the vehicle uses the starter motor instead of the ima battery. updated 04/21/11

Our 2006 honda civic ex automatic had the battery die on us while the key was still in the ignition and apparently this combo is a sure fire way of destroying the abs modulator which honda charges $900 to repair. this is a wide spread honda problem which was revealed once i started searching for what the lights on our dash meant. more people with the same problem can be found here. http://www.8thcivic.com/forums/canada-east/83944-abs-light-e-brake.html http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/1057973 http://www.8thcivic.com/forums/mechanical-problems-technical-chat/231978-abs-brake-lights-after-hub-bearing-replacement.html. *tr

Battery began performing what is know as a calibration where all motor assist ceases and the battery recharges. once in a while this is okay however it gradually got more and more frequent to the point it became a daily routine or even occurred multiple times within the day. one cold morning the ima (battery light) came on. after taking the car into honda, they performed 6 software updates. since that time calibrations have increased in frequency. the battery will now calibrate after sitting for as little as 1 hour and will often calibrate several times within a single commute. at one point over the course of the day, about 80 miles, there were 5 calibrations. a few days later the car performed 4 calibrations in a 20 mile stretch. the ima light has not came back on at this point but i did take the car to honda. they were unable to reproduce the condition. at this time nothing has become of the calibrations. while they have been merely annoying i am concerned that they pose a high safety risk as should the calibration come at the beginning or in the middle of a heavy acceleration, the car will loose significant power and can potentially cause a hazardous situation that could easily result in a collision.(when the battery calibrates, getting the car to accelerate is like pushing a freight train). *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 honda civic hybrid. the contact stated that the vehicle would sporadically fail to start. the vehicle was later repaired under nhtsa campaign id number: 11v106000 (electrical system). after the repairs, the dealer was unable to start the vehicle and the contact was advised that the battery would need replacing. the dealer offered to cover fifty percent of the repair costs and the battery was replaced. the approximate failure mileage was 60,000 and the current mileage was 62,000.

The car loses power upon acceleration and going up a hill from a complete standstill. the car at times can not climb up a hill. this causes a safety issue. i have discussed this honda and i was told that "given that there was not a computer record in the memory there was not a problem. on the freeway the engine revs upon acceleration without any increase in speed. i think the battery electrical assist system is defective and needs to be replaced, honda added a computer patch to the car that slowed down the electric engine assist and comprimised the power and acceleration.

Honda hybrid recall (summer 2010) to update software to address battery problems has resulted in major degradation in what little power existed in getting up hills. car 'freezes' and struggles to get up hills. extremely dangerous driving in street of san francisco. recently struggled to go up a highway onramp at 25-30mph - no load in car other than me. not until 15+seconds on the flats could i slowly manage to get to highway speeds. in the few months since the notice, there are many accounts on the web of other owners experiencing same power problems. i know i bought a car with hardly any power but this is dangerous. honda technician drove it with me and saw the problem. attempted to diagnose and i got a call back that this is 'normal' as a result of the software recall update. *tr

I have a 2006 honda civic hybrid. the car no longer is getting assist from the battery. . which causes it to not be able to accelerate when needed. further, it sometimes surges, without notice when i am putting my foot on the gas. i got the "fix" that we were informed was a software update that would prolong battery life. instead it got rid of the electric assist, making it unsafe. *tr

2006 honda civic had 35,000 checkup on aug 23,2010 - on sept 30 the car refused to start after grocery shopping - oct 1 local dealer told me that the battery need replacing at a cost of $1040, including towing. i was told that no the battery problem should not have been found on 8/23 and that it could happen overnight - that there is no way to determine when your car will die! the battery is not connected to the electrical system so nothing shows up on the dashboard display until the system has failed! the outrageous price for replacing a battery costing $79 - $135 is related to the cost of replacing the necessary harness which is burned through by the battery acid. i think this "design flaw" - so identified, as above information was, by the local service consultant - needs to be corrected and owners warned. if there is no way to identify the potential then how am i to trust the car even when the harness and battery are replaced? *tr

2006 honda civic hybrid with 49,400 miles. battery power assist fails suddenly during acceleration to merge onto a freeway. sudden and unexpected loss of engine power in such a circumstance can result in a rear-end collision. *tr

Since i have gotten the ima battery upgrade the car battery completely discharges randomly several times a day. when the battery discharges the car looses a significant amount of its acceleration. i have had three incidents since this upgrade where i have nearly had accidents due to this problem. once while turning onto a busy street on a hill the battery discharged and i lost the acceleration and the oncoming car almost hit me. i had a similar experience on the highway when i pulled into the fast lane to pass a car and i lost pick up and the car far behind quickly caught up and had to slam on their breaks. the third episode is when i came to a complete stop on a very steep hill. when i went to drive forward again the battery discharged and despite being in the drive gear and despite pushing the gas pedal to the floor i kept rolling backwards. i ended up rolling backwards downhill and turned into someone's driveway and turned around. i drove around until the battery recharged and then was eventually able to drive up the hill. when i brought these concerns up with my local honda dealership they agreed this did not sound normal. after they test drove it and ran tests they did not find a problem so they called honda central. they were told that it is normal for the battery to discharge randomly through out the day since the upgrade. when i asked how do i drive safely they said i should be careful about the battery discharging and subsequent loss of acceleration. *tr

I have a 2006 honda civic hybrid. i brought it in for a software update to the ima system and since then, the gas mileage and performance is down a good bit. the acceleration is the dangerous thing - sometimes the acceleration is quite sluggish and this is due to this software upgrade designed to make the battery pack last longer so they don't have to replace it. *tr

Vehicle's audio/radio not working. 65, 000 miles, one owner. radio switches to and from different outputs. only way to stop this from occurring is to shut radio off. once problem starts, it will happen more and more frequently until screen dims out and radio shuts down. *tr

1. honda civic hybrid battery loses power, does not perform idle stops that recharge integrated motor assist battery, inability to accelerate on freeway onramps or when driving circumstances necessitate acceleration, decreased gas mileage. 2. at 34,347 miles began noticing ima battery doesn't last long and makes acceleration difficult. at 62, 430 miles i am concerned for myself and my family's safety. car extremely difficult to accelerate even on streets. at 69,388 problems continue with a noticeable dip in gas mileage. at 90,747 miles ima battery sensor indicates a problem. battery not working properly. 3. per honda at each service only software was updated. no parts replaced. therefore, battery is still only charges up to halfway. the battery isn't consistently dead to start with but it does die down again with driving. *tr

I received a notice from honda that my 2006 honda civic hybrid needed a software update to stop premature battery failure. had update performed. the vehicle is no longer a hybrid car. this car is dangerous to drive in nyc traffic as it now has no battery assist when the battery is at a 50% charge. *tr

2006 honda civic hybrid, quit while driving. lost all power, had no lights, brake, turn, 4 ways etc. luckily the car quit on a side street had it been on an busy road or interstate the car would have been disabled without the ability to warn cars coming up from behind. car towed to dealer where it was found the dc to dc converter had shorted internally. *tr

1. loss of battery power, occurs daily. 2. the battery does not charge during deceleration nor does the engine auto-stop when the car is idle or at a red light as often as it used to do. 3. more than 30% decrease in mileage per gallon/fuel efficiency over past 4 months. *tr

In response to a recall notice, i took my 2006 honda civic hybrid in to "update the software to extend the life of the battery." unfortunately, my car no longer drives like a hybrid: the motor does not stop, even if i am stopped for several minutes, whereas, before, it stopped every time the car did. the battery does not assist nearly as often, and the gas mileage has decreased significantly. i called the dealer, freeway honda in tustin, and requested that they reinstall the old software, but they refused. i purchased the car largely because of the excellent mileage: i would never have chosen to basically turn it into a regular, non-hybrid, civic, which is what the software did. the honda case # is [xxx]. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Honda civic hybrid--2006. ima assist abnormalities following most recent honda repair campaign. my 2006 civic hybrid was given a software update by honda on 8/5/2010 following a campaign initiated by honda to address loss of power and performance due to ima hybrid battery deterioration and failure. prior to the update the vehicle would often lose battery charge suddenly, resulting in a significant loss of power and at one point stranding me in an intersection while turning left in front of oncoming traffic in july, 2010. the most recent update (i have had several from honda in over the 4.25 yrs of ownership) has not fixed the issue of sudden loss of power from transient battery failures that occur without warning, often when accelerating up steep inclines or attempting to merge into traffic. in addition to the ongoing issues, the hybrid battery now fails to provide adequate assistance when accelerating, merging into high-speed traffic, etc. and experiences wide fluctuations in charge, jumping from 1/3 charge to completely full with sudden drops of a similar fashion. these fluctuations continue to occur regardless of driving conditions, ambient temperature, accessory or a/c use or other extenuating factors and occur multiple times per week, and multiple times per day on occasion (6 battery failures in the last week alone since the update). i have experienced at least 1 near-miss accident in the last 30 days due to sudden loss of power and honda's multiple attempts to address the failures from a software perspective have been unsuccessful. *tr

Honda civic 2006 sedan 4 door. approx. 40,000 miles on the car (failure occurred as soon as odometer went pass 40,000 miles). can't shift out of park without pressing the shift lock release button. brake lights do not work. contacted honda and rep there said the issue could be with the brake light switch. rep said honda has issued a safety recall of 07v402000 (exterior lighting:brake lights:switch) so take car to dealer for inspection. took car to dealer for servicing. mechanic rep says the vehicle is not included in the safety recall, but in the 07v402000 specifically includes 2006 civic sedans. main issue i have is that honda failed to notify me about this safety recall. i am the original owner and my car is registered with honda. last time honda sent me a postcard about the safety recall 07v399000 so i got it fixed immediately, which probably saved my life since my wheel was on the verge of falling off! *tr

My honda hybrid 2006 looses all its indicators when the weather is either hot or cold; i loose air conditioning, and speed indicator; ima system and check engine alarms goes off. checked several times by honda dealer; could not figure out the problem. this has been going on for about one year. after recent recall and software update installed yesterday, the car could barely start at a light (rpm up to 6000, drive engaged, barely any move forward), and not even an alarm light on anymore; this represents a major safety issue. *tr

I received a notice from honda that my 2006 honda civic hybrid needed a software update to stop premature battery failure. had update performed. the vehicle is no longer a hybrid car. it basically runs off the engine. the only time the integrate motor assist unit works is when the car is first moving from a stop, and even then it is relatively useless. the vehicle previously was excellent. motor assist worked great. honda issued recall update to reduce the number of claims for early battery failure. they have shut off the hybrid system in order to stop battery failure which would have cost them over $2000 per car to replace. they have not extended the warranties of existing owners like myself who have 60,000 miles. the battery will now last to the end of the warranty period because it no longer needs to work. according to the dashboard, the car is constantly charging the battery, even when i push the pedal to get onto a highway. this is not the hybrid car i purchased and used for the past 4 years. it is basically a gas engine with 40 hp. the car hit over 6500 rpm to get up a hill with one passenger, and the motor assist didn't turn on..but the power bars stayed at the middle range and honda says it should. how does a vehicle reduce ima assist when hitting the gas? what is all this reserve battery for? probably to keep the flashing lights working when someone hits me in the back thinking i am actually moving. this update is not safe. *tr

In response to august, 2010 recall notice from honda for 2006 civic hybrid, i had the integrated motor assist (ima) software updated at the dealership on 8/4/2010. since then, the software has been executing the ima battery recalibration routine with increasing frequency, to the point now where the recalibration is occurring 1-2 times per day at unpredictable times during my commute to and from work. during the recalibration period of about 5-7 minutes, the ima is not available to assist acceleration. the acceleration is suddenly sluggish when recalibration begins, and does not resume its normal characteristic until the recalibration finishes. the car is severely underpowered and can be dangerous when the expected acceleration for entering a freeway or making a turn across traffic, does not occur. honda does not define this behavior as a failure, so no corrective action taken. *tr
