Feb. 2007, approximately 60,000 miles on the vehicle, while driving on freeway middle lane, engine started racing, lost acceleration. was fortunate to get to the shoulder without causing an accident. through an extended warranty which i paid for, got a new transmission installed by honda. since i had not used the warranty before, the premium on the warranty would have been reimbursed to me had the transmission not had to be replaced. after 70,000 miles on the second transmission, the same exact incident occurred again on july 6th 2012. i contacted honda and was told that there has not been a high amount of complaints with 2004 accord transmissions. honda also claims that there have not been any recalls or extended factory warranties. i have documentation that both transmissions have been maintained to honda specifications. vehicle is currently having a third transmission installed. *tr

I purchased new a 2004 honda accord sedan with a v-6 engine and automatic transmission in february of 2004. while driving the car on wednesday, january 17, 2007, i suddenly no longer had 3rd,4th or 5th gear. honda refused to fix the car under warranty because i had 51,700 miles on the car, 1,700 miles over the warranty. they denied that there was a recall on this model car. i have since learned that this model has had a recall, 04v176000, that calls for the replacement of the transmission if 1) there are over 17,000 miles on the car; and 2) there are obvious signs of discoloration due to overheating. i had the car towed to a transmission repair shop, and they called to tell me that the entire transmission had "completely burned out." the shop service manager stated that "the bands should be a light tan color," and mine were "burned black." i have since been told by honda that my car was not covered by this recall, and they would not fix the transmission. *nm

Transmission on 2004 accord stopping at light would not move. had dealer tow car. needs new transmission with only 19,000 miles on this . this is a problem and can cause injury or death. *jb

My vehicle began to experience transmission problems on february 14th, 2005: the gears would engage harshly when accelerating on city streets and on freeway on-ramps. there were a few instances when the engine "over-revved" on the freeway because of a shifting problem. i experienced total transmission failure on february 14th, 2005, while driving on city streets. the vehicle was inoperable, and had to be taken to a mechanic. i was told by the mechanic that the transmission underwent extensive damage and had to be rebuilt. the mechanic advised me to contact american honda and try to get them to repair or replace the transmission free of charge, since my vehicle may have been recalled under nhtsa bulletin 04v176000. honda would not honor my request, as it the vehicle was manufactured after the dates specified in the bulletin. however, the vehicle had an odometer reading of only 42,200 miles when the transmission failed; nevertheless, american honda refuses to act upon my request for service and repair. i believe bulletin 04v176000 should be amended to include more-recently manufactured 2004 v-6 accord sedans. *nm

When i drive 40mph to 60phm under light to moderate load my vehicle shakes and vibrates excessively. i have asked my local honda dealer on any service bulletins but apparently nothing outside of my airbag. i am concerned because a lot of people report online the exact same problem. " honda case # n012008-04-1100-403 honda at 1-800-999-1009 nhtsa campaign id number : 04v176000 my car a 2004 honda accord 4 door 4 cylinder. when i am drive at a speed of about 25 mph the car trembles/shakes momentarily and then continues to gain speed. if i continue driving at about 25 mph the car trembles/shakes momentarily without warning. the same issue with trembling and shaking happens also when i drive the car at a speed of about 40 mph. this issue does not occur at any other driving speed ranges. the second gear in the automatic transmission momentarily trembled the car. i have been told by the dealership that this problem can cause gear failure and transmission lockup resulting in a crash. the driving tremble problem started happening at about 50k miles. i brought the car to the dealership and the problem could not be replicated so it was not repaired. i brought the car back at 75k, 80k, 85k, 90k. finally at 95k the problem could be easily detected by the mechanics and they wanted to try some simple changes. first the mechanics tried fuel injector cleaners. at 97k the mechanics tried changing the erg or ekg valve. at 99k the mechanic changed the catalytic converted heat shield and changed the spark plugs. the problem continue at 101k the mechanic now tells me the problem is with the transmission and that i should think about replacing the transmission because the wear of the gears can cause a tooth to chip or gear breakage which could result in the gear failure. the gear failure can result in a transmission lockup, which could result in a crash. i am upset because the car transmission was under warranty from 80k to 100k miles and i had bought the honda care warranty. now it". *tr

Dt*: the contact stated there was a recall #04v176000 on the automatic transmission for the vehicle. after the recall repair was performed the transmission began making a howling noise and has not been fuctioning properly. the noise was coming from the transfer case. this happened at various speeds and increased with rpm's. the vehicle was taken to the dealership on three occasions and the problem has not been remedied. the manufacturer has not been contacted.

I have a 2004 honda accord lx with a four cylinder engine. last year i reported a defect whereby the vehicle was attempting to accelerate while i was in the act of stopping. i had to use both feet on the brake pedal, put the transmission into neutral and kick the accelerator pedal to get the engine to come back to idle. when i put the transmission into neutral the engine rpm's went up to almost 6000. i had the vehicle checked by herb chambers honda, in burlington, mass and they found nothing wrong. however, on dec 8, 2005, i was making a left hand turn into a parking lot at a very low rate of speed and the vehicle did the very same thing! it took both feet on the brake pedal, put the transmission into neutral, the engine sped up to almost 6000 rpm's, kick the accelerator pedal and finally the engine dropped to idle. this concerns me greatly. i'm seventy years old and i recognized the problem, but my wife who is seventy-two and who doesn't use the car too often, may not recognize the problem, be able to think of the solution and handle the vehicle all at once. it could end up killing her or someone else! [xxx] thank you. *nm updated 07/17/2012 *js information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 honda accord. the contact stated that while driving 65 mph, the vehicle stopped accelerating. the vehicle coasted to a stop and was towed to an authorized dealer. the dealer replaced the transmission under warranty. the failure had since recurred on three occasions. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer after two of the recurrences and the transmission was again replaced under warranty. the vehicle was not taken back to the dealer after the most recent failure because the vehicle was no longer under warranty. the failure mileage was 46,000.

Three months ago i purchased a new honda accord and on november 28th i noticed a unsual smell and procedeed to take the car into the local honda dealership who informed me that the clutch on my vehicle needed to be repaired and would be covered under warranty. later i was told that it was a wear and tear item and that it would not be covered. *ak

Numerous problems, braking system, transmission, problem starting the car. recall notice for a part to be changed in the transmission. *bf campaign id number : 04v176000 gear failure could result in transmission lockup, which could result in a crash. the consumer stated that underneath the car sounds like it going to fall apart. the vehicle sways while being driven. *tc

A recall for transmission second gear inspection was issued. the consumer called to set up an appointment, and dealer stated that next available date is not until december. *ak

I owned a 2004 honda accord 2 door coupe. i filed for lemon law because american honda refused to fix a major transmission oil leak in the car. i have won the lemon law case, but when i found out that american honda was not going to recall all the cars with that transmission, i felt like i had to do something. the problem is due to a low vent valve on the six speed manual transmission. the manual transmission only holds 2 quarts of oil. i purchased the car in 9/2004. from 9/2004 to 9/2005, i witnessed well over a quart of oil spill out and onto the bottom of the transmission and engine. i have a detailed outline that i can e-mail you on request outlining all of the visits to the dealership and the outcome of each visit. the location where this oil comes out, is also where the clutch is located. i had noticed clutch slippage soon after buying the car. i am assuming the clutch was slipping due to the oil soaking the clutch plate and disk. i would like to see a full recall done on all of these transmissions. american honda admitted that they have modified the 2005 transmission to resolve this issue, but will not recall the old transmission. *jb

Dt: the consumer's vehicle stall intermittently even in traffic. the vehicle was taken to the dealer but they could not find a problem. dealer cannot find a problem. while driving in bumper-to-bumper traffic, the problem is more noticeable. *nm vehicle has repeated problems going into first gear. vehicle has been in honda shop for about 75 days as of 5/21/05 and repeats the stalling issue on a regular basis. dealer refuses to fix the problem. *tt *nm

Bought a honda accord 2004 v6 ex 3 weeks go. about one week after i had the car i noticed a humming noise from the transmission. robertson honda is jerking me around telling me they don't hear one. now i find out from your web site there is a tsb about this very issue with at least one complaint from the prior year with the same issue. last honda car i buy.*ak

I took delivery of a 2004 honda accord ex with leather on june 25, 2004. its been exactly a week. i have driven about 580 miles in a week. i have encountered the following problems and i did'nt see any recalls on the manufacturer's website. i am very disappointed after spending $24000 on a brand new car. *ak 1) the check engine light came on and the 'd' light on driver side dashbaord is continually flashing. 2) i can hear some sliding noise from left to right and vice versa when making sharp turns (happens all the time). the sounds seems to be coming from under the glove compartment 3) after driving about 60 miles in one go in warm weather(temperatures in 80s), i hear a rubbing/squeaking noise when making turns. becomes more audible when windows are rolled down. sounds more like tires rubbing against the body. 4) passenger side floor is soaking wet and i assume it is water. i can hear water sloshing sound under the glove compartment when making turns.

Car had regular maintenance on 4/11/11. on 4/23/11 while attempting to merge onto the freeway, the accelerator bogged out and i lost power. i was scared i was going to get hit by the car in the other lane... then the car seemed to run fine until i attempted to pass a car going up a steep hill and the car lost power again, then it seemed to drive fine until the following monday on the way taking the kids to school it just started failing while normally driving. took car to dealership said it was the transmission, that tc clutch stuck off. fluid has clutch residue and is burned very dark , will need trans assy to rectify".when 15 days earlier it was fine according to their records. nothing has bee done they want $5000 to fix it. have looked at other options but have done nothing yet. *tr

When parking the car in a parking lot, as i was turning into the parking space the car jumped (went very fast forward and hit the wall in front of me) even though i had my foot on the brakes i felt i had no control of the car and the engine turned off on it's own. i also noticed it jumped gears, it was no longer on d but d3. this incident caused damage to the bumper of the car.*ak

My wife experienced a near accident with a semi-truck on a freeway due to power train failure. during a lane change the car's power and acceleration completely stopped performing for several seconds. she noticed the tachometer indicator revving very high but no power was transferring to the engine for several seconds. it did "kick" back into gear in just enough time to avoid a collision with a semi-truck that was fast approaching from behind. after missing her intended exit she took the next one and realized she was only about a mile from the honda service center that we have always used. this was on a saturday, so to confirm the problem we waited until the next monday to get the news that the transmission had to be replaced for $4,100. research on the car showed 2 full transmission flushes (~37k & 61k) because of contaminated fluid. our owner's manual recommends the first service be performed at 120,000 miles. i don't believe this car had any corrections made on the initial recall customer letter from the summer of 2004. if it had, then there would be no reason for the two transmission total flushes and total failure at 85,383 miles. the honda service dept. would not negotiate based on previous history so on 02/25/2004 i wrote a letter to american motor honda company's customer service dept. stating the facts and requesting a reply. i did receive a letter on 03/20/2004 requesting that i call a certain number within 10 days (actually 2 work days) otherwise they will consider the matter closed. the letter was dated 03/14/2004. i could only reach a voice message from the person who would not return my repeated calls. honda will not take responsibility for neglected and inferior work. in effect this whole matter reduces the value of our car by more than $4,100. more important, they placed my wife in unnecessary danger on the freeway! please open an investigation.
