We have classified the 176 complaints from 2004 Honda Accord about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
The car initially would stick with a brief pause when shifted from reverse to forward. several days later while driving on the freeway the car suddenly began to slow between 30-40 miles an hour. in order to get home we had to turn off the car and then restart and coast. in an effort to transport to our mechanic the car would not go in reverse and would not go into drive so we had to tow it in neutral to the shop. the mechanic was able to verify how the transmission fluid was black and smelled burnt. his prognosis was that i will need a new transmission. within the past couple of months i had the car in the shop because of engine noise. it was thought to be the transmission and further diagnostics revealed the idler tensioner pulleys had to be replaced. at the time computer diagnostics revealed no problems with the transmission and the fluid was fine as well. *tr
I have a 2004 honda accord v6 and while merging into traffic on my way to work, the automatic transmission failed. i was nearly rear-ended, but was able to get the car off to the side of the road safely. had this happened on a highway i could have been rear-ended by an 18 wheeler. with a v6, i expect to be able to pull out into traffic and come up to speed quickly and safely. that was not the case on the 29th of november and i was nearly rear-ended by a minivan due to the transmission failing completely. i am told that the transmission oil pump failed, and that lead to the transmission failure. i am now trying to trade in this vehicle for a toyota instead. i no longer feel safe driving any honda vehicles. in my experience, hondas nonchalant way of dealing with this issue is extremely disturbing, and makes me feel that honda does not care about me as a customer. sad, if this is the new honda, i will be sure to inform everyone i talk to about the decline in honda quality and customer service that i experienced. *tr
I was driving the highway and merging on an uphill ramp, the transmission raced and the car lost speed. about 20 miles later, i could feel something wrong with maintaining my speed and there was hesitation. another 20 miles later, i lost all forward movement in drive and left the highway. i was able to go another few miles on a side street in 2nd gear and then the car stalled in the middle of the street. the transmission is completely lost. *tr
At 57 to 60 mph, when accelerating the whole car shudders. was told the front axles needed to be replaced. i did some research and found this is a very common problem with honda accord from 1997 to 2005. one piece of anecdotal evidence from a honda repair technician was that he saw this problem at least once a day. this has to be a produce defect for this to happen so frequently. i am not sure of the ramifications of this problem on vehicle safety if left unrepaired but i have to imagine any problem with an axle could be potentially serious and/or life threatening. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 honda accord. the contact stated that while driving approximately 20 mph, the vehicle decelerated independently and the transmission warning light illuminated. the contact also stated that a ticking noise could be heard coming from the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was confirmed that the transmission had failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted about the issue and informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign id number: 04v176000 (power train:automatic transmission). the approximate failure mileage was 162,338.
Driving on i-205 and the transmission started slipping. engine would go from normal to racing while i was driving. got off and parked to pick up a friend and it would not go in to reverse to back out of the spot. had to have it towed and the transmission rebuilt. for about $4500. there was only about 47000 miles on it at the time.
Transmission failed on highway, was able to drive at 50 mph at 5000 engine rpm. slow to engage into drive from stop. next day, would not engage r or d. honda offered only $1300 goodwill on a $5k+ bill for reman transmission. always performed a transmission fluid drain and refill every 10k miles since 60000 miles on the odometer w/honda oem atf-z1 purchased from dealer. filled up to the circle on the dipstick between the handle and last circle; poured new atf-z1 through the dip stick hole. had to bite on a $2500 rebuilt repair bill from an indy shop. *tr
Smell something burning while running the car on freeway. axle seal leaking and coolant bypass hose leaking was confirmed later. *tr
Transmission has been accelerating very fast overheating, slipping, it appears the transmission fluid have been leaking however i took it in for service about a month ago and everything was fine. my dealership from february 13, 2012 september 28, 2012 commonwealth honda has been claiming there is nothing wrong with this transmission the suspension or the timing belt. they performed service and all of them they claim everything is fine. now less than 30 days later my transmission is broken. a vehicle with just got problems should not continue to be resold. *tr
I was driving the car on the i-15 approaching victorville, ca. the car suddenly lost all power and i had to pull to the side of the road to prevent getting hit from behind. the car stalled once i got it stopped and the warning lights for the engine and transmission came on. the transmission had apparently overheated and spewed all the transmission fluid out onto the road. i called for a tow truck and had the vehicle towed to victorville honda. they told me that it was too late in the day to look at the vehicle and drove me to a car rental place where i rented a car at my own cost. the next morning they called and informed me that the vehicle needed a new transmission and the cost would be approximately $6000 for them to replace it. i was driving from california to ohio and could not afford the cost. i had them flush the transmission and refill it and continued on my trip. approximately one month later the transmission completely failed and i had it replaced at a local shop. *tr
My car started bucking about two weeks after i had it inspected in july. also the drive light was blinking and the check maintenance light came on. at one point i was alone and far from home and the car would not go into reverse. i contacted a mechanic i know well who told me there was a safety issue and that i should try to drive the car to the transmission place he recommended. for several miles the car bucked and i wasn't sure whether i would get there or not, but i did. very scary. not sure this sure happen with a car that only has 76,500 miles on it and i am the only owner. *tr
I was traveling on the interstate and was gradually having problems with my accord v6 engine shifting into third gear. rpms would go up, but no additional power. finally transmission totally failed. honda reported to me that the error code indicated an internal transmission failure and i needed a new transmission. they only gave me $1300 towards the $4400 cost of the transmission. they had no response to my comment that i noted other failures of the transmission posted in this database and elsewhere on the web. *tr
The vehicle stopped dead for me on a road. fortunately i was not on a highway (i was on a 30-mile/hour road) because i probably would have been rear-ended and i would have been dead or ,worse, caused someone else to be injured. i called the towing service and they said it was the transmission. the car at present is worthless. i never received a recall notice form honda. i can only guess that i had moved from the date of purchase. however, my local honda dealership in syracuse,ny never (over 8 years of service at the same dealership) notified me of a potential issue or recall on this transmission. this is a serious problem since the car just stalled on the road and died. very disappointed with honda and their lack of notifying owners of the potential serious problem. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 honda accord. the contact was driving 20 mph when the transmission failed without warning. the vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection where they advised the contact that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign id number: 04v176000, (power train:automatic transmission). the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified but did not respond. the failure mileage was 48,406.
I did the routine maintenance on my honda accord. i have followed all of the specifications regarding oil changes, maintenance on the transmission, timing belt replacement, etc. unfortunately, even with the routine maintenance performed on this car, my transmission failed on a road trip on july 7, 2012. i was driving on the interstate going 75 miles per hour when my honda accord would not accelerate anymore. thankfully, i was able to safely pull across three lanes of traffic in order to get to the shoulder. unfortunately, that is when i discovered that my transmission failed and i had to take it to the nearest garage. *tr
2004 honda accord. consumer states the vehicle had catastrophic transmission failure while driving on the highway. *kb the consumer stated he read on the internet, where a recall was issued, but he never received a notice. *jb
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 honda accord. the contact stated while going 40 mph, the transmission failed. the contact stated the vehicle was jerking forward and she pulled the vehicle over and noticed that the vehicle did not have any transmission fluid. the contact added transmission fluid in the vehicle and vehicle functioned normally, but the failure later recurred. the transmission failed completely and the contact had to get the vehicle towed to her home. the contact notified the manufacturer and they informed her that the transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 105000.
While driving on the highway our honda accord automatic transmission lost power and acted like it went into neutral. luckily we were able to limp to the garage as it was an intermittent problem. my concern is that this could have caused an accident if this had happened on a busy highway or we were in a position which you could not pull over to a safe location. complete loss of power due to a defect in the trans is a problem i have never experienced and feel the transmission should not fail in this way. i believe it is a design flaw. i hope no one is injured with these failing transmission as this is a common problem for this model if you do an internet search. *tr
Started with high pitch whine, then it took a few seconds to go into gear, then sputtering and ultimately it would stop accelerating while i was driving. *js
On june 9, 2012 my nightmare returned and again it was my transmission. i was driving on a major intersection in queens, ny when i felt a change in the speed of the car and the loss of power (car not moving). by the grace of god i was able to put the car in reverse to navigate it closer to a safer spot. i later had my car towed to a mechanic to diagnosis the problem and was informed that it was the transmission. again, this was an unexpected expense that should not have been. *jb
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 honda accord. the contact was driving 10 mph when the transmission failed while attempting to accelerate. there was an increase in engine rpms, but the vehicle was extremely slow to respond before failing again. the vehicle was taken to a mechanic for diagnosis and the contact was informed that the transmission needed a complete rebuild. the vehicle was not repaired. the dealer and manufacturer were notified and informed the contact that the vehicle was not under recall. the failure mileage was 138,000.
Transmission needed to be replaced at 119,000 miles. honda never said anything about the issue even when asked. *js
Transmission slippage and failure. similar to what i have since read online about other honda transmission problems and recalls. honda quoted me $4,100 to replace transmission, less a discount of 20% or net of $3,280. i have impeccable service records and local dealership (where i bought car from) agreed that i could not have done any better with maintenance--all of which was performed at the local dealership. no previous problems and transmission slippage and failure was sudden (couple of days). most recent transmission flush was at the honda suggested mileage. *tt
Preceding a high pitch whine the vehicles slipped out of gear at third gear. there were no prior warnings. upon investigating other honda transmission problems i found the same problem was found in other 2004 honda accords. however, i was told by honda that my vin # did not match the recall. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 honda accord. while stopped at a stop light, the contact depressed the accelerator pedal and noticed that the vehicle would not accelerate. the vehicle was towed to the an independent mechanic for a diagnostic test. the mechanic stated that the transmission would have to be overhauled. after the repair, the contact noticed a vibration in the transmission. the vehicle was taken back to the mechanic. the mechanic installed a new clutch. the vehicle was repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 94,100. the consumer also stated the front hydraulic and side motor mount was replaced. two weeks later, the consumer was informed the motor mount was broken. updated 06/04/12
First, i called approximately two weeks ago and filed a complaint over the telephone. the man i talked to said he would follow up with an email to me, which he never did. he also said i would receive something by mail, which i never did. my name is [xxx] i would like to know what happened to that complaint? in short: my 2004 honda accord's transmission failed at 94k. honda said my vin was not part of the recall. who did honda make a deal with? i had to pay to have the trans rebuilt. now going high speeds for long distances the dash board lights up, the d light blinks, the triangle comes on, the engine light comes on. once the car cools down most lights go off and after 3 cycles, the engine light goes off. auto zone came up with some p code that it was a sensor. the trans guy replaced it., i am still getting dashboard lights and this time i lost the speedometer. someone said the trans is overheating. but then why the p code that it is a sensor electrical problem? if honda is having such a big problem with this why isn't the highway safety commission getting involved? why doesn't everyone write to them and make a complaint? why aren't you getting involved with this issue? honda put a bad product in their cars and the consumers are suffering. in 1970s chevy put a small trans in a mid size car with plastic parts. after 3 transmissions and a trip to court the judge ordered they put a bigger trans in my car. is this the same thing? this is a very serious problem with honda and their transmissions and i would like to know why the consumers are getting the raw deal on this? the honda dealership said they don't know anything about this problem? how can that be when there are so many complaints! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 honda accord. the contact stated that while driving slowly to park the vehicle, it lunged forward and crashed into a wooden fence. the failure recurred several times. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for a diagnosis and the contact was informed that the throttle was faulty and would need to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the failure mileage was 31,000 and the current mileage was 32,000. ..updated08-30-12 *bf updated 09/07/2012 *js
Driving on the highway, the automatic transmission in the v6 model (85000 miles) seemed to slip into neutral, and any application of gas red-lined the engine. had to dodge through highway traffic slowing down to 25 mph before the gears would engage. after exiting the highway, the same problem persisted at lower speeds; complete gear slipping. the problem persisted in d or d3. after letting the car sit turned off for a few minutes, it seems to now be functioning properly, but there is no telling when it could happen again. this is a safety issue to due sudden failure of a critical system. had i been less fortunate on the highway, i could have been involved in a serious accident. also, if this happened while turning through or crossing a busy intersection, i would have been broadsided. http://www.carcomplaints.com has logged over 100 of the same complaints in cars that have never been recalled, it's only a matter of time before someone gets killed. this car should have been recalled with the other 2004 accord v6 models. *js
Transmission is not shifting. *tr
My wife had parked in a parking space with a very slight downward slope. there was another space ahead of her. she had been driving in a heavy rain. the car was operating normally. when she returned about 15 minutes later, the brake pedal felt hard. she started the engine and shifted into reverse. the car started coasting forward. the brakes remained hard and didn't stop the car. she stopped it by shifting to park, then turned off the engine. she repeated the attempt to back out of the space - same result. no error messages appeared. she called, and i drove to the scene. the rain had stopped. i felt the hardness of the brake pedal, although it felt more like a stiff spring than a non-power brake pedal to me. i pumped the springy pedal a few times; it didn't change. i started the engine, keeping my foot lightly on the brake. when the engine started, the stiffness immediately disappeared, the pedal felt normal, the transmission worked, and the car drove normally. i didn't get to experience the transmission problem. later, i could find no problem with the brakes. the linkage has only a very slight amount of play, as it should. i depleted the vacuum supply by pumping the brakes with the engine off. the pedal felt very hard, unlike the springy feel in the parking lot. i have a phd in electrical engineering and a lot of car repair experience. this background leads me to conclude that it is extremely unlikely for the unrelated braking and transmission systems to fail simultaneously, and then recover simultaneously. there has to be another common cause, which leads me to suspect the computer system or possibly a sensor, particularly because this happened after driving in a heavy rain. the postulated failure mode is a compromised computer system that could partially activate the abs system and also fail to operate the reverse solenoid valve in the transmission.
Automatic transmission failed while driving. car was lurching and jumping in speed. engine was racing. ultimately, the transmission failed while driving. the car was left without propulsion in the middle of a busy highway. there are 100+ similar complaints on carcomplaints.com and the #1 most reported problem on the honda accord is the transmission. the '03 accord is the #2 worst car listed on the side with 747 complaints (#1 problem) on the transmission. the '04 is #12 also with transmission problems being the #1 complaint. people driving the 2003 and 2004 honda accord have a nasty surprise waiting for them. *tr
With no other signs or warnings, my transmission stopped working as i was driving down a busy street. the engine revs but the car does not engage. i was able to drift over to the side of the road, where it seemed to stay in first gear. after limping along for a few minutes, all it would do was rev. i coasted to the side of the road again and turned the car off. i started it up after a minute or two of freaking out, and it seemed to work normally again. after about a minute, the same symptoms returned. had it towed to a mechanic and we drained and replaced the transmission fluid, which was dark. this solved the problem for another fifteen minutes, until it failed again. now i am looking at 2-3k repair to have a honda accord that works. according to the internet, this is a common problem with the make and model of my car. a partial recall for 2004 accords with transmission problems does not include my vin#. *tr
Transmission went without warning as i headed up a small hill about two miles from my house. my mechanic said the failure was related to my second gear and the entire transmission needs to be replaced. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 honda accord. while stopped at a stop light, the contact attempted to accelerate and noticed the engine began to race excessively. the vehicle would also lunge forward when driving at approximately 40 mph. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostics. the technician stated to the contact that the transmission and motor mounts would have to be replaced. the failure mileage was 87,263. .. updated 04/11/12 *bf updated 06/07/12 the front struts were replaced. *js
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 honda accord. the contact was driving 25 mph when the vehicle became resistant to acceleration. the vehicle was coasted to a stop and the contact shut the vehicle off. upon restart, the contact was able to accelerate and drove the vehicle home. the contact then attempted to drive the vehicle on the following day, but the vehicle would not accelerate. the vehicle was not taken to have the failure diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and offered no assistance. the failure mileage was 130,000.
After vehicle was driven for approx 10 minutes the car slowed down and the motor would rev up. car parked and then tried to drive it again and same thing happened. car would not go more than a few miles an hour, luckily was able to pull over on side of the road. car towed to honda dealer. was told that the vin # was not included in the recall. spoke with honda corporate and filed a claim. however they continued to say the car was not included in the recall. dealer noted on invoice that trans slipping in 1-2 gears and slips on 1,2 up shift. fluid is dark. i had to pay to replace the transmission on a car with only 68,472 miles. *tr
Entering on-ramp on freeway with speed of about 45mph and i hear my engine accelerate and see my rpm's increase rapidly, but my honda accord 2004 slows-down and transmission refuses to engage into another gear. then transmission decides to work again. honda accord 2004 owners please be cautious and replace transmission asap to avoid any injury or death. this has been the same story for many honda accord 2004 owners....i entered my vin number on the honda website for recall-database and nothing resulted as a safety recall..... i will present my defective transmission to honda again. estimated cost to repair transmission is almost 5k!!! *tr
While driving on a highway at 60 miles an hour the transmission failed and the car jerked and lurched down to 35 miles an hour. it was as if the automatic transmission went to neutral at 7000 rpm's then would not increase above 3rd gear. transmission fluid was changes in accordance with the maintenance schedule. after that incident, the car was driving fine for two days. brought the car for inspection at a honda dealer who told me the transmission was fine. four days later, while driving on the highway again traveling at 55-65 miles an hour the transmission gave out again. except this time the car will not go into gear at all. it smelled as if my transmission was burning. i'm told the transmission failed and i need a new transmission. the failure occurred seemingly out of nowhere while traveling at high speeds. i was lucky the failure did not occur during rush hour traffic otherwise i could have been involved in a serious accident. *tr
Transmission would become either completely disengaged or car would lunge forward as transmission slipped into low gear. very scary with infant in back seat. need to completely replace transmission at 80,000 miles. this is a safety issue and a very expensive one. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 honda accord. the contact stated that while driving 50 mph, the rpms increased rapidly. the vehicle shifted into different gears when depressing the brakes and also began jerking abnormally. the contact was able to pull over as the vehicle would no longer respond to the contact's acceleration attempts. the dealer was contacted and they advised the contact that they were unaware of the failure. the vehicle was neither diagnosed nor repaired. the failure mileage was 81,900 and the current mileage was 90,900.
I own a 2004 honda accord ex v6 coupe and the transmission is failing in 2nd gear. i was traveling up a hill and it failed and i was forced to pull over so i would not get rear ended. i have been told i need to replace my transmission, which costs $4,000-$5,000. in a recent january 11, 2011 article published by the ny times by [xxx], titled "honda transmission problems seem to persist", a recall from 2004 is outlined which involves 2003-2004 honda accord v6 transmissions. the article also states "the n.h.t.s.a. web site has some 570 transmission complaints from owners of 2003-4 accords. many refer to problems with second gear". i have contacted honda and have been told there is nothing they can do because my specific car was not part of the recall? i am livid. this is ridiculous. how can they not be held responsible for this?! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
The car began driving rough in city driving, gradually becoming worse. now it shudders and rattles at 30-40 mph. several trips to the dealer ultimately resulting in diagnosis of transmission/torque converter failure. fortunately it didn't just cut out at a dangerous time. replacement cost is nearly the value of the vehicle. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 honda accord. the contact stated that the vehicle would not accelerate from a stop. the vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer and the vehicle stalled while they were diagnosing the failure. the contact was informed that the transmission failed. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and the contact was awaiting a response. the failure mileage was 77,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 honda accord. while driving approximately 65 mph the vehicle began to suddenly decelerate. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the technicians were unable to duplicate the failure; however, he flushed the transmission fluid. the failure continued to occur. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 67,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 honda accord. the contact stated that the driver was driving at unknown speeds when the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer and the dealer stated that the transmission failed and needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was notified and stated that the vin was not included in the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 04v176000 (power train:automatic transmission). the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileages were 71,000. the vin was unknown.
I am like other honda owners whose car failed them. my transmission has gone out right after the 100,000 mile mark. honda states there is no known problem with the v6 transmission but i have sites with hundreds of people who explain the same issue i had with my car. now honda states that checked my 2nd gear shift (which is causing stressed to the transmissions and killing them) butback in 2005 but saw no issues, but after i took it to my local honda dealership, they state its bad! honda secretly knows that the transmissions in this car is bad ( the whole line of cars) but refuses to fix the issue knowing it will cost the company 3500-5000 to fix everyone's car. they are risking the safety of their customers to save a buck. websites like : http://www.carcomplaints.com/honda/accord/2004/transmission/transmission_is_slipping.shtml and many more found thru google shows hundreds to thousands of customers have been through (or will so go through) the same issue after going over the 100,000 mile mark. honda had a recall and after a civil lawsuit expanded it to 100,000 miles. i almost got hit as my car was driving on the highway at speeds of 60+ then slow down to 5 mph as if my car was in neutral. the people need your help to warn everyone else of this danger before someone gets hurt or worst! is there a way we can do another civil lawsuit to have the warranty expanded again? thanks and god bless. *tr
2004 honda accord. consumer writes in regards to transmission recalls *tgw the consumer was informed the transmission needed to be replaced at a cost of $ 4,150.00. *jb
Driving in traffic on the freeway, the automatic transmission suddenly disengaged and pressing/releasing the throttle caused the engine to rev freely, as if the transmission had been placed into neutral. once the car slowed down (coasted) to about 20 mph, the transmission re-engaged somewhat, and gently depressing the throttle allowed me to slowly accelerate to keep up with traffic (about 40 mph). when the transmission shifted between 2nd and 3rd, it appeared to slip quite a bit--the tachometer ranged between 1900 rpm and 2600 rpm until 3rd gear engaged. the transmission now refuses to go into overdrive (5th gear), and the transmission is continuing to slip, both while shifting gears, as well as when driving at a steady rate. took the vehicle to the local honda dealership, and they quoted $4452.00 to replace the transmission with a honda remanufactured unit. i called honda customer service to see if they could offer any assistance on the repair, and was politely told "no" due to the age and mileage of the vehicle. *tr
Was driving down the highway about 50mph and all the sudden the engine rpm increased but the car wasn't going any faster, but doing the opposite. i looked in my rear view and came so close to being rear ended, thankfully i pulled over quickly out of traffic. the car would not move, called a wrecker got towed to honda...and guess what ..yep transmission failed, and to make matters worse my vin# was not part of any recall..go figure! i have the 04' accord with the v6..we will see if honda steps up. *tr
My 2004 honda accord v-6 transmission failed at about 100k miles. there was a previous transmission recall but apparently they did not do any repair during the recall because the transmission looked fine! *tr sure enough, it failed after. i had to fix it and then called to request a reimbursement or partial reimbursement from honda. they offered a $50 gift certificate! ps: the response from honda customer service and honda repair shop was that it was normal for a transmission to fail at 100k. so for all of you looking to buy a new car, be aware that it is normal (not) for a honda to fail at 100k miles and as such expect to pay an additional $10-$15k to replace transmission several time over the life of your honda. after more than 3 hondas, my next car will probably be a toyota. signed honda just lost another customer.....
