1999 honda accord has problems stalling.*mr *jb

Vehicle is experiencing a problem with the egr valve which is clogged. the check engine light continues to keep flashing off/on since last summer. dealer informed the owner that the egr valve needed to be changed. however, the vehicle was out of warranty. this problem has not been recalled, however, a product update has been imposed. this is directed to those vehicle which came with an 80,000 miles and 8 year warranty. this vehicle is less than 6 years old, but has 95,000 miles. *ak *sb *nm

The consumer stated the vehicle stalled without warning. the dealer was unable to locate a problem.

Mileage at start of problem,, app 60,000 now 130,000 in 08! i bought my 99 accord with 56,000 miles in 2003. i was called about the recall on the ignition switch, and honda replaced it for free, although at that time i was not having any problems. ok i started having problems with my car stalling. first time was on i40 going app 75. i was in the outer freaking lane and it just turned off. i lived with this very freaking hazardous problem for a long time because i didn't trust honda and money (just note one of the phone calls from honda the man told me he thought it was my ignition switch again and that they wouldn't be responsible for the cost of repair this freaking time but later decided it was something else,!)i was in college taking my emt practicals with an ems system and was having to drive to another county and be in contact via cell phone with honda, and borrow my dads truck!! they had my car for days and keep calling and asking if one of there mechanics could drive my car to lunch ,, and if they could take it home over night and so on, and finally said it wouldn't stall for them!!!!! i was '!@#$%! they did another diagnostic test of 75$ and my check engine light wasn't even on! they also said i needed new spark plugs, i had new spark plugs and im not an idiot,, there was nothing absolutely nothing wrong with the ?!@#$% things. they also eventually decided that i needed my fuel system cleaned, because they really didn't know what to do and this is what they said themselves! they told me they wouldn't charge me for the diagnostic fee if i got the 120$ new spark plugs, mine were new and working very well. so of course i had no option. after reading s few complaints here and on other sites, i am seeing that they totally took me for over 500$ and that my problem was in my ignition switch,, im wondering if they snuck and replaced it again behind my back just to charge me for other '!@#$% they didn't do. i hate honda i hate honda,, i want some ?!@#$% justice. *tr

P0420 code - check engine light is on - catalyst efficiency below threshold - bank 1 nly 6 years old and 95,000 miles. from what i have read on many sites, this is a systematic problem with this model car and people can't afford $1100 to get the catalytic converter replaced and therfore continue to drive the car with the check engine light on, while polluting the environment and possibly overlooking other failures that may be more safety critical because of the light always being on.*ak

The vehicle stalled inadvertently while driving on the highway. the owner has taken the vehicle to the dealer on several occasions for this defect. provide further details. *jb

1999 honda accord's crankshaft was broken. *mr the lower pulley "in hand" had come off of the end of the crankshaft. *sc *jb

Honda accord 1999, engine check light indicates catalytic converter failure, which is an expensive repair caused by a design flaw whereby lean fuel mixtures produce low emmissions, but also burn up the catalyst bed. the failure is systemic and happens between 80,000 and 130,000 miles. many families cannot afford the repair and since it is not critical, it will be left unattended, which leads to environmental deterioration and the immediate risk of driving with the warning light already illuminated.*ak

02 v 120 000/ignition switch: after having the recall repairs done by the dealer approximately 1 year ago, the vehicle been having an on going / intermittent problems with engine stalling. the vehicle has been to the dealer on several occasions and they were unable to duplicate or resolve the issue. please provide any further information. *jb

The vehicles automatic transmission would slip between first and second gear. *nm the interior lights were intermittent, the alternator was found faulty and made noises, and there was moaning coming from the engine area at times. the consumer requested reimbursement. *sc *jb

Transmission slippage. dealer replaced under warranty with remanufactured transmission. *mr

While driving 25 mph vehicle stalled. consumer restarted vehicle and pull over. then, drove vehicle to the dealer for inspection, and the mechanic informed consumer that this vehicle was not included in the recall because vehicle was imported from canada. *ak

1999 honda accord - engine light comes on. dealer says need to replace catalytic converter for $1100. think this is a rip off. believe it happens to many people.*ak

When temperature reaches under 32f, first thing in the morning, the car was warmed up, and after driving 1/2 mile, the car shut-down and won't restart. *ak problem was found to be the fuel pump, according to the mechanic, he has known of at least 20 accords from the same model 98-02, with similar problems, and it all was traced to the same manufacturer who made the fuel pumps.

Consumer stated that while her son was driving a 1999 honda, accord, he encountered some problems. when making a turn, either right or left, the vehicle shut off. but, it would start right up immediately. this could be dangerous when making a turn out of traffic or into traffic. also, consumer was told that there was a recall on this type of problem, but she had not received any notification. *ak

This is a follow-up to a previous complaint - 10020962 from last year. low and behold, 4 months after my brake rotors were turned and repaired, the brakes started to warp again. the honda dealership would not re-repair them - they indicated that the aftermarket brake pads on the front were causing the problem (the brake pads were fine). i took my car to another facility - one that fixes and maintains race cars - they indicated that auto makers are using lighter (and less durable) parts to enhance mpg ratings - which is more likely the cause of this problem with my honda accord, as well as with other types of vehicles. the good news was that while my car was in, i was able to get the recall on the ignition switch fixed, and at the same time, they indicated that my car needs a new catalytic converter - i believe this is the same issue many honda owners are facing - "check engine" light comes on about 3-4 months into each new gas cap. i've had 4 for this vehicle (and have not lost any). i've never replaced a gas cap in my life before, just as i have never had brake rotor problems before. the only good thing i could say was that they did not charge me the diagnostic fee - given the problems i've had, i would hope not. i ended up having the o2 filter / sensor (whatever it is) replaced at another facility - which took care of a drop in mileage issue i was experiencing. the bad news for honda is that i am probably going back to toyota - i would love to have another honda if the dealership would stand behind their vehicles or make me an offer i can't refuse (with a decent trade in on this vehicle)...i'm in the market for a 2004-2005 small to med suv...i loved some aspects of my accord, but need a new, larger vehicle to haul my daughter back and forth to college. ps: since i know the rotors won't last, i'm not repairing them anymore. this is obviously a faulty design for this model. *jb

My 1999 honda accord has had the catalytic converter fail at 40,000 miles, 80,000 miles, and 126,000 miles. this appears to be a design defect, but honda and my local dealers refuse to cover the repair under warranty.*ak

Re: 1999 honda accord ex (vin: jhmcg667xxxxxxxxx). opted not to drive on freeway that evening due to rush hour traffic, took back streets (probably would have been killed on freeway). suddenly engine started to make loud noises & engine died; lost power steering. check engine lights & all panel lights came on. tow truck arrived, driver discovered belts came off & the pulley was broken. bolt attaching it was sheared off & broken in half, too. submitted anomaly to honda corporate (case # n012003-09-1001253)(ph # (800) 999-1009) to review case once our local honda dealer completes repairs. corporate honda offered "goodwill assistance" if case deemed valid enough for them to pay for some if not all of the costs. have not heard from them yet. honda dealership noticed pulley was also warped. they have never seen anything like this before. reported car had 56k miles, but mistaken; should be approx. 65k. i think this is a safety issue and not just "wear & tear"; more like a design flaw or something! we have an 1987 honda with no problems & its pulley does not even wobble like it is doing now in the 1999 since it has been repaired. it's still on a trial basis for 1 week starting 9/15/2003. to continue further may cost us an add'l $3k out of pocket with no guarantees from the dealership. *jb

The "check engine" light came on within days after my 1999 honda accord ex v6 had 90k service at a honda dealership, including a fuel induction service. the first trip back to the dealer resulted in the service department recording the code in their computer then turning the indicator lamp off in my accord. the "check engine" lamp returned soon after leaving the dealership. on the 2nd visit, the dealership advised that the code indicated the egr valve was clogged. the service manager advised that honda had extended the warranty for this problem but only for 8 years/80,000 miles. my car has 92k miles yet i was never advised of this known problem. the honda dealership's own testing during the 90k service did not detect the emission problem and i see that many others with less mileage have experienced the same problem.

While driving vehicle would suddenly stall without warning. vehicle had to be put in the park gear to restart because it would crank in the neutral gear. the cause of the problem was undetermined. *ak updated 5/18/09 *cn the consumer stated the vehicle would overheat. updated 05/20/09.*jb

Driving down the road when the crankshaft pully fell out of the bottom of the engine, resulting in power steeering failure and engine died. the power steering went out, the altenator quit, the water pump quit. luckily i could coast into a parking lot entrance to get off of the highway.the crankshaft bolt "crystalized" and broke off inside the crankshaft. the timing belt, crankshaft pully and bolt, and the water pump had to be replaced. *ak

After owning the vehicle for two days it broke down on the highway. vehicle was taken to the dealer, who replaced the battery and the alternator. on another occasion, the vehicle broke down due to an alternator bolt breaking. it was replaced. on a third occasion, the serpentine belt failed. currently, vehicle is at dealers shop again because it will not start.*ak *jb *nlm

Vehicle will stall at any speed with no prior warning. owner has made contact with the dealer on two separate occasions, but the problem still persists.*ak

Transmission failure at 46,000 (this was already reported to nhtsa). check engine light has come on again - this time it is the catalytic convertor and 02 sensors.*ak

Owner of 1999 honda accord lx automatic transmission 4-cylinder engine.approximately 53,000 miles on odometer. driving when heard noise. pulled over and lost power steering. car stopped running. parked in parking lot. looked under hood saw belt loose. had car towed to independent honda shop. mechanic states that bolt on crankshaft pulley was never tightened properly at factory, allowing crankshaft pulley mechanism to let belts slip off. damage done to end of crankshaft needs replacement. mechanic states called honda dealership in calsbad, ca and they have seen three cars come in like this. safety concern since i was on a small side road only going 25 mph , could have had an accident if on freeway. had small children in car at time and also my realtor, could be a witness. car inspected at honda dealership on 6-17-03.*jb. mechanic states he called calsbad, ca dealership and they hav eseen at least one car per month with same problem. *ak

I own a 1999 honda accord with 2.3l engine with 21k miles. the crankshaft pulley came loose and created internal engine damage. honda will not claim a defect. check complaint #'s 8013427,750032,10000253,10000370,10001199,10006874. i would appreciate any info you could send me. *nlm

While driving, the engine light illuminated on the dash board. *jb

The check engine light illuminated on the dash board. *jb

My crank shaft pulley bolt broke off damaging my whole engine. honda estimates it will be approx. 5900.00 to fix. this is ridiculous since my car is practically new (1999) and i get all my servicing at the dealership!

While driving down the freeway going about 40mph the accelorator stuck and continued to accel at uncontrolable speeds. the brake would not stop the car and i had to put it in neutral and slam on the gas pedal to release it. i have since taken the car to mel rapton honda and spoke to the service manager who claims that he has never heard of this happening. it has not done it since. i had a mechanic check the accelerator cables as well as the cruise control cables and there were no apparent problems.

While driving at 30/40 mph, the bolt for the main pulley came off the vehicle, which resulted in the belt becoming loose. *ak *jb

Re: 1999 honda accord lx (vin: [xxx]) while my wife was driving in a residential area at 25-30 mph (approx), the engine started making clanking noise and engine died. she let it rolled, pulled over and parked on the side of the street. we discovered that the main pulley broke loose and the drive belts came off the rollers due to a broken (sheared off) bolt that attached the pulley to the crankshaft. the car has only 61k miles on it and i thought that it was totally premature. the ball honda service rep told us that honda motors co. will not cover for the repair since the warranty expired, but this is totally premature i thought, and maybe it was caused by inferior material (bolt) and/or by poor quality workmanship (over-torque'd). the car has had regular maintenance service by honda dealer and has no previous engine work done except for the mfr recommended regularly-scheduled services. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

The vehicle stalled without warning while coming to a stop, the vehicle also stalled while driving and the consumer was forced to pull over. the dealer has been notified. *mr *nlm

The crank bolt to the engine broke off.*jb

On 9/19/02, i was leaving a store when my car started to make a rattling sound. i then lost power steering, all of the warning lights came on and the car stalled. i popped the hood to find that all of the engine belts had been thrown. after two days at the dealership, i was advised the crank bolt (key way and crankshaft pulley) had failed. the honda dealership (don carlton, tulsa, ok) could offer no explanation as to why it happened, only that i was out of warranty. my repair bill was $536.61. i also incurred a $57.34 tow bill to get the car to the dealership.

Car died when pulling from stop, had previously died when going 20 mph. first time dealer said no way to check. this time another dealer checking and said idle was low. car not part of iginition recall but very same symptons. when car ws less than 1 yr old, took to dealer for somewhat similar problem and was told that keychain may have interferred with ignition. made detailed report of problem at the dealer. had 1990 honda civic die on freeway, had 49,000 mile on car. was a switch and under warranty.very concerned that i will be in an accident. this problem seems far too common with honda. will think twice about ever buying one again. had 1980 honda that stalled at red lights but car so old -about 140,000 mile that i just traded it in.

Consumer states that after filling the gas tank, the check enging lights comes on and stays on, this occurs because gas is leaking into the spark plug, which may cause an engine fire. consumer was informed by dealer that she has to click her cap 3 times to avoid this problem. nlm consumer stated that check engine light came on. dealer diagnosed bad evaporative canister control valve and replaced the valve. *yh

The car jerked and stalled in oncoming traffic. cars were able to miss me at that time. this occured and i took it immediately to dealership where replacements of output shaft seal x 2 was done. it has continued to pull and stall and still having problems. the trasmission has been serviced and have never had probems. feel that a 99 honda should not have transmission failures at this time. mr

While driving at any speed the vehicle stalled. the vehicle has stalled more than twenty times within the last year. the dealer replaced the idle air control valve but the problem persisted. the manufacturer is aware of the problem. *nlm

This problem effects emissions, which the government has mandated an extension on honda warranties to 8 year/ 80,000 miles. this appears to be a fairly common problem. one to which the honda corporation fails to respond. there appears to be either a faulty indication of emission problems or parts that are truly defective - wearing out before their normal life expectancy.*ak

Consumer states that while driving the check engine light comes on and stays on. dealership cannot find problem. consumer afraid to drive vehicle. *mr

Car stalled numerous times at any speed. dealer has been notified. please provide further information. ts

While driving, the crankshaft/pulley engine broke, causing vehicle to stall out. almost causing an accident.*ak consumer also stated that a bolt inside the engine was missing, and some part of the engine was defective which caused the crankshaft pulley to break (all part outside engine).*scc

There were problems with the thermostat, brakes, engine light was intermittent, overheating, squealing while driving, the windshield molding at the upper left corner of the window, thumping noise while driving, maintenance light was inoperative, steering wheel vibrated, the abs light was intermittent, and the tires were replaced early. mr scc *jb

Consumer states of having problems with her transmision, consumer also states that there is a recall for this metter on 2000 and 2001 vehicles already.dealer was notified. *mr

While driving the check engine light illuminates intermittently. the dealership is aware of the problem. *ts *nlm

The vehicle started hesitating and pulling violently forward. twice having the vehicle checked the second drum was diagnosed as the problem causing the catylic converter to go out. the problem was partially corrected by a independent mechanic. the dealer was informed of the problem. please provide more information.*jb

While driving approximately 15 to 20 mph engine stalled unexpectedly. dealership examined vehicle but was unable to reproduce the problem. *jg *ak
