The vehicle had been experiencing intermittent, sudden and complete engine stalling over the past several months. my local independent shop could not find a problem. the car finally stalled completely and the steering column started smoking. dealer replaced ignition switch and said it was under recall. i never received notice from honda of a recall. during two recent visits to the dealer the paperwork indicated that there were no open recalls on the car. i have lived at the same address since purchasing the car new in 1999. i received and responded to an earlier recall. however i believe that honda and their dealers are now neglecting to inform owners of required recalls. i was unnecessarily put in dangerous situations and spent a great deal of time and money addressing a problem i was not properly notified about. *tr
On 01/10/2009, i brought my 1999 accord to the dealer because the engine had been stalling. this problem started a year ago and has progressively gotten worse. the tech replaced the ignition back switch and also performed the safety recall of the ignition switch key interlock. a week later, the car stalled again. the car now stalls more frequently than before. *tr

I had the ignition switch replaced in 2002 under the recall warranty. now 7years later(2009)120,000miles, i am having the symptoms of a bad ignition switch. while driving the engine just quits. it will start after several attempts. it will run fine for about 3-4 weeks and quit again. i talked with a honda repair man and he said the warranty replacement switches in 2002 are starting to fail now. *tr

Ignition switch failure on 1999 honda accord. not one of the vin numbers i was told that was involved in the recall. had to repair on my own. the car stops running intermittently with no power at all and then restarts. *tr
In 2002 - 2004 my 1999 honda, accord had a recall to replace ignition switch, vehicle could stall in traffic causing an accident. i had the ignition switch replaced by honda in 2004. december 2008, my vehicle while driving down the road just shuts off, after a few minutes restarts. the vehicle shutting off starts to get more frequent, so i take it to a mechanic, who replaces the ignition switch. the problem seems to be fixed for now. apparently honda didn't fix the problem with the first recall. *tr

After my second honda ignition switch had been replaced after almost getting me killed by cutting out while i was going 80 (in a 75), the replacement which has been in my car for about 5 weeks and installed by honda of flagstaff az, with around 1000 miles on it is now exhibiting the same pre-failure symptoms exhibited by the switch it had replaced. failure to start after being left in direct sun for prolonged period. it then will stall immediately after starting, then refuse to turn over at all. additionally, and here is the safety complaint, the car will lose its electrics and them spontaneously turn back on while the car is being operated. the incident on august 9th occurred on city streets in escondido ca at speeds between 15 and 35 mph. *tr
Car has intermittent stalling issues while driving. car has been serviced in leesburg honda, only known thru carfax report. leesburg honda could not verify if ignition switch was repaired from recall status. verification came from charlottesville brown's honda that switch was replaced but not by who. told if key was shook while running and car stalled then it was ignition switch. car still persists intermittently in shutting off with no warning signs. sometimes, after stall, it takes several turns of key to finally get car started. stalling can happen at any time and has in fast lanes of highways making car a little hard to steer of the road. only hazard lights work to send warning sign of car trouble. *tr
Ignitions switch was replaced due to car randomly stalling on at least 6 occasions while driving resulting in near collisions due to loss of power steering, power brakes and the ability to accelerate in order to safely remove vehicle from the roadway. honda customer service informed me that the ignitions switch had been recalled however the ignitions switch had previously been replaced on my vehicle several years ago under this recall and any repair would be at my own expense. repair invoice is available as can verification of the problem by the repair shop who experienced the same problem while test driving the vehicle. i feel this repeated problem illustrates failure on honda to resolve the original problem associated with the defective ignition switch which presents an immediate treat to life of all owners of the 1999 honda accord and the public at large affected by the original recall and another recall should be mandated by the nhtsa. *tr
Main relay problems i recently purchased a 99 honda accord le coupe - 6 cylinder automatic. once i got the car home i found that the car had a starting problem. early morning when the temperature was cool the car would start fine. after sitting in the sun all day while at work the car would fail to start. opening the doors and letting the interior heat drop would allow the vehicle to start. with no satisfaction from the dealer other than looking at me like i was crazy i searched the internet for honda hard starting problem... i found a website that gave the same problem that i was having and directed to how to repair the main relay. i followed the directions as they explained and re-soldered 5 connections on the printed circuit of the main relay... since that time the honda will start in any type of weather. just seems odd after searching the forums and the amount of people that have had the same problems that i was having and nobody has seemed to know what it was... some searching turned up a problem resolve... now you mean to tell me that im not the only one having the problem and honda service centers tell me that they have never heard of a problem like mine.... don't get me wrong i love the accord and can live with some of the problems but as a customer i expect that honda would at least acknowledge that there is a problem and by the description they should be able to tell me what they think it is and how much it would cost to repair the vehicle....i'm not chasing a recall... i simply want my car to start when i turn the key... *tr

My 99 honda accord ex cuts off while traveling down the road without warning. this is due to ignition sensor which i corrected shortly after buying my car with rick hendrick honda. now years later there is a recall on the ignition interlock. but, honda will not fix the ignition senor because it has nothing to do with the recall. certainly this is a serious safety matter and i feel it's unfair that honda will only fix half of the problem and burden the cost to me. i don't think i'm alone with this type of problem. please investigate this matter. i feel i shouldn't have to pay for this ignition sensor. i had the recall ignition interlock fix at honda of columbia, p.o. box 8234 , columbia, sc 29202. *tr
Ignition switch failure, second occurrence. car stalls during normal operation. the original recall replaced the ignition switch and repaired the interlock. the switch failed again. obviously this was not a fix only a delay of the next failure since the same component failed. i used detailed repair instructions from the internet to make the second repair myself. i requested "goodwill" from american honda which was denied so i am out of pocket for parts and my time to repair. i believe that honda should be accountable since the replacement part also fails at the same rate as the original component. when this finally causes an accident or death i'm sure they will settle out of court to prevent further loss on this component when all they really had to do was engineer a non-defective replacement. in other words fix it once but fix it right. honda did not do this and will not warrant the second defective component. they better hope i am not injured when this fails for the third because i have my documentation. *tr

Problem was the ignition switch that applies to of the safety items on the ignition switch recall. i was charge by a honda dealer $498.00 including taxes. the reason i have i brought my car was: worn contacts could cause the engine to stall without warning, increasing the risk of a crash. ( i do not understand why is not on the ticket ). as a secondary issue i have mentioning the lock not working properly as a result of your previous work (recall in 2007). your technician has told me that was a normal thing. the mechanical from firestone rafael toledo, (phone +1 (305) 667-4866) disagree with your suggestions at that time, the car should not been returned to me with the lock like that, but that was not important to me not even now.. anyways it always turn my car on. i told the advisor not to proceed with the recode of the old key because it was worn; i am really scared to drive my car now. ( phone conversations). *tr

Sometimes my car will just stop running without warning. extremely perilous when it happens in a turn and at low speeds because of loss of power steering or if sitting at a traffic signal. it appears to be related to the ignition. dash lights may or may not flash on an off. adjustment of the ignition key position/angle fixes it until it happens again. has happened about 10 times in the last year. *tr
I have a 1999 honda accord lx with a 4 cylinder vtec engine. 1-12-08 while driving at lower speeds--typically 30 to 45 mph the car will jerk and change gears when not needed. at highway speeds the car stalls and i have to shift to neutral to restart. update: may 2008 and i have no reverse gear at all. after reading all the complaints i would really like to know why honda has not put a recall on these 1998 and 1999 transmissions. why? does someone really have to die before they fix their own problem? i am calling honda in the morning and if i don't get satisfactory results i would like to start a negative campaign against honda. this is crazy and i want answers. *tr

I have a 99 honda accord in which the engine stalled while driving. i didn't realize it until i tried to turn the wheel and realized that the steering wheel locked. it took several times to restart and took it to the mechanic. i thought it might be the alternator but the mechanic said no because the light would have come on. he said it was the ignition switch. honda had a recall on these in 2003. i was never notified of the recall because honda said my switch was not apart of the recall. i am having the same problems with my car stalling while driving as the switch with the recall. i called honda to rectify the situation and to find out why they didn't notify me of the potential problem. i have two little girls who ride in this car which by the way is my only car and we could have gotten killed due to this manufacturing defect. *tr

I was trying on the highway going about 65 mph when the car stalled. when i realized what happened and tried to coast off the road, the car started back up without me doing anything. it continued to stall and restart nine times in a 3 mile stretch. the last time i pulled off the road because the car did not restart. i waited a few minutes and tried to start the car. it started. i drove the next 10 miles holding the key steadying in the ignition. i don't know if that helped but i got home without it stalling again. i knew it was the ignition switch because it had been recalled and replaced twice previously. when i took it to the dealer they told me it was my emission system and i had to have my evac canister replaced ($250). i did that and was driving home from the dealer when my car stalled and restarted again. i took it to a local repair man who took care of the problem. he replaced the ignition switch and the car has been fine since. *tr

For the past few years the 1999 honda accord would randomly fail to start when battery and all othe mechnicals components were normal. after multiple trips to garages the problemwas narrowed down to the ignition switch thatwa s not properly disabling immobilizer system. *ak i found out there is an outstaning recall on this problem (recall id from nhtsa: 02v120000). however, honda limit the recall to a small number of vins and fail to address the problem for many other owners with the same complaints.
