Honda Accord 8 Typical Problems - What You Need To Know Before Buying

The Honda Accord 8 (CU/CW) is a midsize sedan manufactured from 2008 to 2015. In addition to the classic sedan (CU), a wagon variant called "Tourer" (CW) and a coupe were also offered. Due to poor sales figures, no successor was designated for the European market, but the Accord continues to be produced in North America and Asia.

In 2011, as part of a facelift, cosmetic changes were made to the front, which now featured sharper headlights and a new grille for a more modern appearance. New materials improved the interior ambiance, and noise levels were reduced. A new version of the 2.2-liter diesel engine was introduced as well.

In terms of equipment, there were six trim levels available for the eighth-generation Accord, including the top-level "Executive," which came with leather seats, optionally in beige. The base trim had all the essentials, but it notably lacked parking sensors.

Honda Accord Engine Problems - Petrol

The gasoline engine lineup included two engines with 156 horsepower (2.0 i-VTEC) and 201 horsepower (2.4 i-VTEC). Both engines featured variable valve timing (i-VTEC), which improved fuel efficiency without sacrificing performance. However, in practice, these engines were not particularly fuel-efficient, with the smaller 2.0-liter engine consuming over eight liters per 100 kilometers - a figure that European competitors surpassed.

The 2.4-liter engine, especially when paired with an automatic transmission, suffered from mediocre acceleration performance. Despite its 200 horsepower, the automatic transmission took a full ten seconds to reach highway speeds.

However, one doesn't buy a Honda with a gasoline engine for fuel economy or quick acceleration. Instead, the focus should be on their high reliability, which both engines reliably deliver. The R-series (2.0) and K-series (2.4) engines are designed for maximum durability and are often just breaking in at 200,000 miles. Unlike some other manufacturers, their timing chains are maintenance-free, and potential issues like a turbocharger or injectors for direct gasoline injection are absent.

Honda Accord Engine Problems - Diesel

The 2.2 i-CDTi is a specially developed Common Rail Diesel engine with 140 or 180 horsepower, identified by the internal code N22. This engine is generally considered robust and long-lasting, and it is notably fuel-efficient compared to the gasoline engines. However, at higher mileage, typical diesel issues should be monitored, including:

• Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF)
• Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF)
• Turbocharger
• EGR Valve

Honda Accord Transmission Issues

There is a choice between a 6-speed manual transmission and a 5-speed automatic transmission. The manual gearbox, typical of Honda, provides an enjoyable driving experience but occasionally suffers from clutch wear and tear. During a test drive, it is important to ensure that the clutch engages smoothly.

The automatic transmission falls behind the competition with its five gears, as competitors often offer seven or nine gears for improved efficiency and dynamics. However, in terms of durability, the Honda automatic transmission performs well. Regular flushing is recommended to keep shifting smooth, especially with high mileage.

Other Honda Accord Weak Points

The Honda Accord 8 is prone to rust, especially on the hood and trunk lid. Fortunately, the manufacturer is aware of this issue and typically addresses it at no cost. Another weak point is the rear brakes, which tend to seize up more frequently.

Additionally, models produced before the facelift have relatively high noise levels. Those bothered by this should consider opting for the significantly better-insulated models after the facelift. High prices for replacement parts can also be a shock in case of necessary repairs. Like many Japanese cars, the paint is sensitive and prone to scratches.

Honda Accord Recalls

The Honda Accord 8 was subject to several recalls. The following recalls affected a significant number of vehicles:

• According to the KBA (German Federal Motor Transport Authority), a defect in the gas generator of the passenger airbag during deployment could release metal particles that could injure occupants. This issue affected models from the 2008 and 2009 model years.
• Due to a software error, the oil level could rise significantly during the regeneration of the particulate filter, leading to oil entering the combustion chamber and causing uncontrolled increases in engine speed. In the worst case, this could result in engine damage. This issue affected models from the 2009 to 2011 model years.

Our Recommendation: Facelifted Gasoline Models with "Executive" Trim

The Honda Accord 8 is virtually unbeatable in terms of reliability. Enthusiasts of the brand often keep their cars for many years and are reluctant to sell them. In addition to the already limited sales figures, this results in a scarcity of used vehicles on the market, so prospective buyers should be prepared for long journeys to find one.

Furthermore, the Accord is not cheap. First-year models with over 300,000 miles on the odometer cost at least $3,500, while a well-maintained example after the facelift can command a two-digit price. Most available vehicles are gasoline-powered, and manual transmissions are prevalent.
