Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2004 GMC Envoy

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 gmc envoy. while drving 20 mph the speedometer stopped working. the dealer stated that they assumed it was a part of the manufacturers recall and repaired the vehicle. the dealer confirmed after the repairs were made that the vehcle was not within the recall vin range. the dealer has billed the contact for the repairs. the failure mileage was 52,000 and the current mileage was 55,000.

This past month the speedometer set at 40 mph with car in "park" position. afterward when driving, my actual speed had 40mph added to the reading. this has occurred three times so far in october 2008. *tr

The speedometer has a malfunction that will make the speedometer read very erratic, at a steady speed the speedometer has been all the way over to the 120 mph and on other days it will stay a zero. this problem occurs frequently, not everyday but i would say atleast once every 2 weeks. i believe there could be grave consequences., you have absolutely no idea how fast or slow you are actually going, especially if there are no cars traveling the same direction as you. i will attempt to repair this item myself since the dealer says it can cost $300-$700 to fix. *tr

Driving at slow speed and noticed speedometer was reading incorrectly--much higher than actual. vehicle driven several times since, with continued incorrect speed rating. all original equipment at 68,000 miles with no previous repair noted. *tr

I began experiencing problems with the instrument panel on my 2004 gmc envoy a few months ago. the entire panel would go out and all the gauges bottomed out. i could not tell my speed, gas level, rpms, etc. the panel would stay out for a few days then return to normal. also on occasion the speedometer would stick at 60 mph and only correct itself if i pulled over and turned the truck off then back on. finally, about two weeks ago the entire instrument panel went out and has never come back on. i have dropped it off at the dealership for service and am awaiting their response. this problem has caused me to run out of gas twice because i was unable to judge my fuel level. luckily both times i was in an area with easy access to the shoulder of the road. i currently have approximately 55,000 miles on my truck. (i can't be sure of this, however, since the odometer is a part of the panel that is out.) this is a serious and, according to my research, recurring problem the gmc should be forced to correct and pay for. *tr

Speedometer quit working properly on friday, july 11. by monday morning, it was back to normal. *tr

Speedometer stopped working. *tr

The cluster gauge quit working. first the gas gauge stopped reading the amount of gas in the tank. second, the speedometer and tachometer quit reading. about a month later the oil pressure gauge stopped working. currently out of the entire cluster gauge system the battery meter is the only gauge that works. *tr

The fuel gauge on my 2004 gmc envoy is not working. *tr

My speedometer gets stuck and does not function at times. although no harm has been caused, it is a concern that i've seen many others file complaints on. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 gmc envoy. while driving 40 mph, the speedometer sporadically failed and displayed inaccurate readings. the contact is in the process of having the vehicle inspected. he called the manufacturer and is awaiting their response. the powertrain was unknown. the failure and current mileages were 26,500.

The headlights and dashlights flicker from bright to dim while driving and when braking. it's a dangerous situation to have other drivers as well as myself distracted by the constant flickering, but research seems to indicate that there is no fix for the problem and an overall lack of concern from gmc. *tr

I have a 2004 gmc envoy. the speedometer and instrument display console went bad on it yesterday (01/28/08) randomly. gmc acknowledges this problem with a recall with other gmc suv's, but not the envoy's. service shops also admit the envoy's have this same problem and don't understand why gmc will not include the envoy as part of the recall. now, i am being asked to pay for costly repair. *cn

I started my 2004 gmc envoy and the speedometer was not working. when i started it, it went to 60 without even moving. sometimes it stays at a speed no mater how fast or slow i go. if i am on a residential street, it says i am going 100. also the clock just changed by it self. it went three hours behind. i have not repaired anything yet. i would like gmc to repair my vehicle at no cost because i know there was a gm recall for speedometers not that long ago. *tr

The speedometer is sticking or not moving at all. this a very unsafe condition and should be recalled asap. *tr

2004 gmc envoy instrument panel has inoperative speedometer, tachometer, and fuel gauge. vehicle has 67,000 miles on it. *tr

Speedometer was on 80mps everytime i started the car, i would turn the motor off sever times to bring it down about 5mps, until that quite working completely. my sister-in-law had the same problem with hers at the same time i did. well, i went to get my fixed they said it wasn't covered under a warrenty and the cost was high at the time so i had to barrow a gps system to use to clock my speed. then the gas gauge went out. would have to wait until my gas light came on to let me know when i was running lowand when i would put gas in my car, i would have to try and start it 3-4 times before it would start. my car is in the shop today, and after alot of research i notice alot of people have the same problem, and gmc does not want to take no credit for their error.

Trouble with instrument panel 1. tachometer not working for 1 1/2 years. 2. fuel gage not working right for over 1 year. 3. oil pressure gage went out not working at all 3 weeks ago. ( biggest danger ) 4. speedometer went out as of january 4, 2008 not working at all for one day. it is now working but showing wrong speeds. could have accident because of wrong reading. i have found out the gmc has some recalls on the instrument panels. as of today 01/06/2008 no recalls for the following years. 2003-2008 gmc envoy this is a inferior instrument panel and a danger to the public. my 2004 gmc envoy should be on recall. hope you can help. number of failures 4. thank you thomas f. thompson p.s. under select complaint types. you have 4 listed to chose from. i am using ( vehicle ) my 1st problem started at 38,000 miles and my last at 54,000 miles. speedometer not working right. *tr

My speedometer started going back and forth, then eventually would stick at a number. it would seem to work at one point and then go back and forth again. going through town, it shows 120 mph at most times. went to gm dealer, put new sensor on it, did not fix problem. now have ordered a new cluster. not sure if any of the other gauges work correctly. this is going to cost over $450.00 and from what i have read, hundreds of this year envoy have this same problem. our part was backordered, so that means there is a high volume requesting this same part. it should have been recalled a long time ago!!! *tr

Speedometer erratic; showing wrong speed almost all the time. 1000s of reports of this on internet in gm and chevrolet suvs of the same type. i have 2004 envoy xl and this cost me around $600. this is a defect and needs a recall. i believe this same part is used on many of the gm and chevrolet vehicles as there are even outside businesses who now fix this problem since there have been so many cases in gms. please note that not all of the complaints are in the vehicle speed section but some are instrument panel section. there have been some recalls for some models but not my model. if it is truly the same part then why isn't my model included? *tr

Speedometer has stopped working properly. most of the time it is stuck above 120 mph. it never shows the correct speed the vehicle is going. *tr

2004 gmc envoy xuv faulty speedometer, the speedometer reads false reading, traveling on highway doing what i thought was 55 and i was pulled over for doing 72 miles in a 55 zone. *tr

Speedometer reads erratically. *tr

On 11/01/07 i noticed the speedometer acting erratic; it would stay on 10 to 20 mph. when i knew i was going faster. at other times it would creep up to 75 or 80 mph. and not go down when i slow down. occasionally it would work fine. this went on about 3 weeks and i thought it might correct itself. it finally stopped working altogether coming to rest above 120 mph. on 12/07/07 i took my vehicle to the dealership. they said they would have to replace the whole interment panel at a cost of around $470.00. they also said if i didn't have over 60,000 miles on my car it would have been covered under the warranty. i had 62,492 miles on the day i took the car to the dealer. *tr

I just bought a used 04 gmc envoy with 30,000 miles on it. now about a month after i bought it i'm having problems with the speedometer. sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. when it does not work it reads to high or two low. i can be driving down the road at 65 and it will drop below 0. or i can be stopped at a light and it shows 40. a quick search on the web shows thousands of people with the same problem. i feel gm and gmc should have to do a recall on this as it could be a life and safety item. for example one could slow to the recommend speed for a curve or a turn. if the speedometer is reading two low then the person would be traveling two fast for the turn. i see also where a class action law suit is in the works on this. *tr

On-going issues with my 2004 gmc envoy since purchase. leave home, travel to destination, usually a short distance, when trying to restart vehicle all dash lights come on, radio works, windows work, etc., turn the key to start and nothing happens, no attempt at starting what-so-ever. makes no difference with temperature, time of day, rain/shine, etc. often if you leave the vehicle to sit for an hour, it will restart, sometimes sooner, sometimes not at all. first incident happened when we had 308 km on the vehicle, now we have 68,000 km and problem still exists. they have changed the ignition switch numerous times, reprogrammed the settings for international vs domestic in regards to the apparent security system that i have, which we discovered has never worked either. numerous issues with the abs coming on with dry pavement. water in rear backup lights, they were drained and re-sealed. rust on all interior door panels, back door and hood where joints meet, repaired. water on the floor at the door when it rains, fixed seal at door. drivers side door locked when you left the vehicle without locking it myself, reprogrammed. interior door trim/seal repeatedly falls off from back right passenger door. 10 months left on our lease....can't wait to find a new vehicle. completely not satisfied with the vehicle or by the service we have received.

The speedometer on my 2004 gmc envoy does not work properly. it will sometimes show that the vehicle is going a certain mph while the vehicle is in park. example: vehicle is in park. speedometer shows 34 mph. when driving, the speedometer bases it's speed off of 34 mph being at 0 and actual speed is 34mph higher than what i am actually going. also, vehicle speedometer will sometimes get stuck past 120mph because of the needle being at a certain speed when the vehicle is not even moving. *tr

Right after purchasing. engine light has been on. purchased in june/2006, with 40,000miles. 1yr after the rpm gauge quit working, right afterwards, the fuel gauge started messing up, going back & forth, then went out completely, battery/oil gauges are out now. the seat belt lights/airbag lights bing constantly & does not tighten up when put on brakes. when this happens the check gauges light comes on, and at the same time i have difficulty getting it in gear. i am also having trouble setting my cruise control. *tr

When key was turned in ignition all lights would work ,but engine would not turn over. speedometer would jump to 70 mph ,and tachometer would jump to approximately 2000 rpms even though engine was not running. dealer diagnosed problem to be faulty ignition switch due to low voltage at position ignition one.*ak

Instrument cluster. speed odometer and tach not accurate. i have had 2 speeding tickets because i don't know how fast i am going. not sure of the date it first happened but it is getting worse. gm dealer in my area was rude to my wife and said they will not cover it. *tr

Starting shortly after envoy was bought i noticed that the fuel gauge would show quarter tank one, then after shutting off and starting again it was out of fuel and the light was on. in july 2011 the oil pressure gauge went high and it is now pegged and doesn't reset. i asked dealer about it and there was an outrageous price just to diagnose. jan 2012 and now speedometer gauge does not reset, it is stuck at 30 mph and goes up to 85-90 when driving. after researching today i see a service bulletin about the instrument cluster, i never received the instrument cluster letter from gm, because envoy wasn't included, but it is the same issues as other vehicle on the service bulletin. please hold gm responsible for these defects. *tr

Speedometer registered improper speed when traveling on highway, would stick at various speeds when stopped. has completely stop working. *tr

Speedometer stopped working. *tr

Speedometer stared moving up and down with the speed of the vehicle but would have a jerky movement now the speedometer no longer resets to zero. at a full stop the speedometer will read from 40 to 70 mph and at speeds a low as 40 mph the speedometer will report speeds up to a 120 mph. this problem does not all the driver to accurately judge the speed of the vehicle. as of this complaint i have not fixed the problem but all indications from other people is that the instrument cluster will have to be replaced or reconditioned. *jb

1. i purchased a 2004 envoy. the dealer i purchased it from had it under warranty. 2 weeks after i purchased, the interior lights were coming on and off, the automatic door locks started to lock by themselves simultaneously. non stop. it scares my children, as well as i, because i don't know if it's going to spark a fire or what. sometimes it does it more than others, for example, when it rains, but it only does it when i roll the driver's side window up. even if its not down and i roll it up it does it. as well as if i hit a small pot hole and sometimes it just does it on its on. i've taken it to a gmc dealer 4 or more times and they can't find the problem any where. so, nothing has been done to fix this problem because no one can find a solution. i park my $18,000 vehicle next to the road in case it does spark a fire. please inform me if anything is available or who i need to contact at gmc to find an answer. *tr

The speedometer and tachometer are not working and the check engine light is coming on. *tr

Speedometer on my 2004 gmv envoy behaves erratically and does not work. when starting up auto speedometer could be at zero or up to 100 or continues to not function at all. needless to say i have no ideal at exactly what speed i am traveling. i have read on the web that many others have this same complaint. i would think this should be a "safety issue" and should be reason for a recall. *tr

The mph and rpm gauges not working. needle would not go down to zero. would get stuck in one mph and continue to increase from there. was able to get it down to zero in 5mph increments by starting and shutting down the engine, but then after driving it would stick at 40 and up. thought it was strange that my other 2004 chevy truck received a recall letter for the exact problem my gmc was having. had to pay out of pocket to replace dash board cluster(over $500.00). i needed to know the speed i was driving. very dangerous situation. *tr

Upon attempting to start the vehicle, all the dash board warning lights and turn signal indicators came on and stayed on. all the gauges started acting erratically and all the needle indicators started jumping at random. when i turned off the vehicle and tried to start the vehicle again, the vehicle started without any problems. the very next time i tried to start the vehicle; it did the very same thing as mentioned above (gauges acting erratically, etc.). i attempted to start the vehicle several more time each time with the same result. finally the vehicle started and no further problems were experienced. i drove the vehicle for approximately 1200 mile over the next few days. yesterday, i was driving home at a speed of approximately 35 mph when the vehicle suddenly and without warning quit. i coasted to a safe spot on the shoulder of the road. i tried multiple times to restart the vehicle. each time the vehicle exhibited the same symptoms as mentioned above e.g. gauges acting erratically. after about 5 min. the vehicle started normally and i was able to drive home. in my driveway i attempted to start the vehicle several time. each time the vehicle exhibited the same symptoms as mentioned above e.g. gauges acting erratically. upon consulting with a local mechanic and a local dealer, i was informed the problem was most likely a bad ignition switch. the vehicle is currently having the switch replaced. *jb

The problem was first noticed in november of 2006 when i received a speeding ticket, i was not speeding according to my speedometer. the dealership said my speedometer was working properly when in fact it was not. after another stop by police, i took the truck to different dealer and i was told the same thing. i was again stopped on 7/4/2007 for speeding. i removed the gauge cluster and sent it to specmo myself for testing and specmo found the speedometer defective; wire chaffing and servo motor intermittent shorting, they repaired it. *tr

I purchased a 2004 gmc envoy with approximately 50000 miles on it in may of 2006. about 4 months later, the speedometer started acting slightly erratic, reporting speeds varying by 10-20 mph (i.e. on the highway, keeping up with traffic at 65 mph, the speedometer would report 45 mph or sometimes 80 mph. over the past few weeks, the problem has gotten much worse, with the speedometer reporting 120 mph at highways speeds, and 50 mph at a stop, sometimes not registering any speed at all (o mph). the cruise control has also stopped working, which i am assuming is related to the speedometer malfunction. i searched online, and apparently there are many other gmc owners with the same exact problem. please see link below: http://www.topix.net/forum/autos/chevrolet-tahoe/t2bgkbgi55eknu77c/p1 this is the first gmc car i have purchased and i am dissatisfied with this safety issue. i am a pretty good guess at how fast i am going, however without an accurate speedometer i feel i am taking unnecessary chances. as a realtor, i often have clients in my vehicle and i am concerned for their safety as well. i filed a complaint with gmc, but i was referred to the dealer as there are no current recalls for this problem. the dealer says that this is a $500 fix, and i am concerned as this appears to be a manufacturer defect, based on the number of other consumers with this same issue. i never expected to have an issue this problematic with a vehicle 2 years old. i hope that by reporting this issue, the nhtsa will be able to help me and the other hundreds or thousands of consumers with this safety issue. thank you for your time.

The blower motor on our 2004 gmc envoy quit working and upon taking it to the dealer to repair, the dealer indicated that the blower motor resistor and the wiring harness that plugs into the resistor had melted together. when attempting to order the two parts (resistor and wiring harness), it was determined that the wiring harness is on nationwide backorder. the service manager also indicated that he has 5 others on backorder. from that comment, he indicated that there is a major issue with the wiring harness and resistor melting together on a national basis. the fact that the heat was so great to melt these two components together clearly indicates a possible fire and safety hazard. i believe it's something that should be investigated and a recall issued. *jb

I have been experiencing headlights, interior lights, lighting in the dash, and other lighting flicker while driving. it appears to be happening more and more. the lights become very dim and then get bright again in a matter of a few seconds. this is getting to be dangerous as people tend to pull over in front of me and sometimes traffic in going in the opposite direction coming towards me will pull of the road all thinking that i am flashing them either due to an emergency or just some wild driver behind the wheel. i had taken my vehicle to the dealer but he states he can not find anything wrong. of course he also stated they took it for a ride but it does not happen for them. i guess not, it is hard to see lights flickering in the sunshine. *nm

The mph and rpm gauges not working. i can be sitting at a stop light and it shows my 2004 envoy is going 70 mph. also the rpm gauge will say 0 rpms when i am going at any speed. we have repeatedly disconnected the positive cable to reset the gauges. i am afraid i will get pulled over because i have no idea what speed i am going. has anyone else had this problem? *nm

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 gmc envoy. upon entering and starting the vehicle, the speedometer displayed a reading of 45 to 90 mph and the tachometer displayed a reading of 1 1/2 rpms. the contact stated that the failure occurred mostly during the winter months. the contact also stated that the battery charging alert displayed incorrectly as well as the fuel gauge. while driving various speeds, the speedometer displayed incorrectly. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that malfunctioning magnets and the cluster needed to be replaced. the contact stated that the speedometer was replaced, but the failure persisted. the vehicle was taken back to the independent mechanic who informed the contact that the circuit board and instrument panel needed replacement. a dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was made aware of the failures and did not assist. the failure mileage was approximately 9,000.

Dt*: the contact stated while exiting the off-ramp of the highway at 20-25mph, the check engine and reduced power light illuminated and there was a loss of all vehicle power. although the engine restarted after several attempts, the vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection. the dealer determined the accelerator sensor needed to be replaced. afterwards, the loss of power persisted and the accelerator sensor was again replaced by the dealer as well as the computer. additionally, the horn intermittently worked, but the horn was not inspected.

Headlights, interior lights, all lights on vehicle flicker while driving on the highway. the vehicle does this when there is no apparent load on the electrical system (i.e. blower, defroster, ac, power seats, windows etc.) the lights become very dim and then bright again in the matter of a few seconds. this can be dangerous to vehicles in front of you and approaching as they believe they are getting "flashed" by your vehicle. it is very unnerving driving with this random occurrence. *nm

I bought my gmc envoy in january 2004 for approx. $42,000. this car has everything. after about 2 months of the purchase, my gps went out and had been fixed twice. my brakes do not always work --sometimes they slip especially when i need them most -which is scary. gmc said that they have heard about this problem before, but did nothing to resolve the problem. the engine stalls periodically. gmc said they do not know why. the gas gauge and odometer do not work properly. when i brought my vehicle into north county gmc dealership in san diego for repairs i mentioned my gas gauge did not work along with many of the other issues. after they repaired the odometer by replacing the cluster, the gas gauge still did not work. every single time these problems happen i am forced to pay a $100 service charge just so they can look at it and because i am in sales, i am also forced to get a rental car. after all this, i am still quite displeased with gmc. i hate to say it but they are supposed to be the best american car ??professional grade?? and if this is true i will never buy an american vehicle again. gmc said they would be checking on all these problems and every single time i picked my envoy up after they supposedly fixed the problems, i found several issues still unresolved. they suggest i need to set another meeting to bring my envoy in and of course will cost another $100. *nm

First of all my odometer gauge stopped operating. it remained on zero miles while i was driving the vehicle since november 2005. the whole dashboard cluster had to be reinstalled. secondly; the service engine soon light began popping on and the envoy was driving rough. i found out from a gm dealer that the clutch fan froze which caused the water pump to break and the radiator to over heat burst the radiator hose and spew out and leak all of the water and radiator fluid from the radiator. the envoy is now not drivable. i have only had this 2004 envoy since november of 2003. *nm

Vacation to yosemite, the tachometer gets stuck and gives the wrong reading, without any warning. it has been consistently giving me the wrong rpm ever since. i have done nothing to correct the problem. *nm
