We have classified the 89 complaints from 2004 GMC Envoy about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
First my speedometer stopped registering a speed followed by the gas gauge going out. my radio goes in and out (more out than in), my sunroof started opening and closing on its own when turning the car on and off, and the roof leaks around where the visor is when it rains hard. i have seen many other consumers with these same problems and would really like to have these problems addressed by someone at gmc. *tr
My 2004 gmc envoy speedometer does not work. gage shows driving 120 mph when driving in the city. gets stuck on numbers and stays there for days at a time. *tr
1. 2004 gmc envoy instrument cluster panel intermittently malfunctioning on and off. 2. ongoing since october 2008. all gauges in the instrument panel will suddenly stop/start functioning for varying lengths of time. the consequence is that the driver is unable to determine driving speed, gas fuel level, and battery status leading to obvious and potentially serious safety concerns. 3. owner currently seeking financial relief from gmc and us government for recall to have faulty instrument panel replaced at no cost to consumer. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 gmc envoy. while traveling at 45 mph, the speedometer failed and would not read the contact's traveled speed. the vehicle was not diagnosed and there were no prior warnings. the failure mileage was 85,000 and the current mileage was 110,000.
Speedometer says i am going 70 - 110 when i am driving 30 ish and sometimes goes to zero. when i am stopped, it will show that i am going speeds (various). my lights on dashboard dims once in awhile. *tr
Defective envoy speedometer. *tr
Faulty dash cluster/speedometer. will read 120 mph when you are sitting still. *tr
My wife has a 2004 gmc envoy, about 6:00 mar 03 2010 she called me from her truck, saying the odometer said she was doing 95 mph when she was only doing about 55mph after i got her to calm down and pull over. she stop the truck and waited on me to get there. i notice the rpm's was stuck on 6000 the gas was on a 1/4 tank after she said she had put 40$ in the tank 30min ago plus the clock said 12:49 and it was like 7:00 after talking to a few people found out there was with the cluster. was talking to my father who has a 05 gmc truck said there was a recall on the clusters. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 gmc envoy. while driving approximately 30 mph the speedometer stopped functioning and displayed zero. the oil gauge also stopped functioning beyond the eighty pressure mark and stayed in that position. the contact pulled the vehicle to the side of the road and checked the oil. the contact did not notice a problem. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technicians stated that the cluster panel needed to be repaired. the speedometer increased intermittently but it did not display the correct mileage. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was unavailable. the approximate failure mileage was 85,000.
I have been having an intermittent issue with my speedometer not showing the correct speed for the past couple of years and has been getting worse for quite some time. it has now reached a point to where the speedometer does not work, oil pressure gauge does not work, engine light stays one and the tach only works once in a while. i actually know three people within the my place of employment that have the same vehicle ranging from a 2003 to a 2005 that have the exact same issues with their instrument panels. of course, the dealership says that there is no recall related to this issue but they would be happy to replace the ip (almost $700) to see if that corrects the issue. i also know of a couple of different websites where you can send the panel off and they will replace all of the bulbs and motors for less $100. it is a shame that gm would charge over 7 times that amount for an issue that is this wide spread. i have driven gm model cars for over 20 years and the engines seem to be good but the interior issues are at a point that i am tired of dealing with them. i guess that it is time to look to take me business to a different car manufacturer and that is a shame. *tr
During normal highway driving, the instrumentation panel needle gauges began to malfunction. the speedometer initially registered significantly higher than actual speeds (registered 110+ mph when traveling at ~65 mph) and then stuck at 15 mph regardless of actual speed or when at a complete stop. the tachometer also began to register higher than actual rpm, showing 6,000+ rpm even when the vehicles engine was returned to idle or turned off. other gauge malfunctions include the oil pressure gauge which would also intermittently register higher than actual pressure. without either a functioning speedometer or tachometer, it is very difficult to estimate actual vehicle speeds and maintain a safe driving speeds. have contacted a local gmc dealer regarding this issue and have not yet identified a remedy. *tr
My 2004 gmc envoy slt cluster gauge; speedometer, gas gauge, and oil pressure gauge have stopped working. *tr
Speedometer does not work accurately. check engine light came on randomly. is currently out and i was able to pass emissions, hopefully it will remain out. had to replace many parts including the heater core, thermostat and coolant. now i am experiencing a problem with the fan of the car. *tr
Nothing descriptive led up to the failure. it happened for no reason we know. the problem is consistent and a new one started today. the problem has not been diagnosed or fixed. i found several similar issues on internet for same model and year vehicle today after being notified by wife that another area of same device has malfunctioned.
Speedometer started acting inconsistent and then "fixed" itself the last week of december 2009. at that time it would not drop below 20mph. after seemingly being ok, the first week of jan. 2010, the speedometer jumped to 80mph and hung there and pegged out at 120mph when driven. i made appt. with gmac in winston salem, nc and was told the entire instrument cluster would have to be replaced @ $600+. panel has been ordered and to be installed end of week. now i see that there has been a letter sent out by gmac that i never received, to replace this cluster if less than 70,000 miles. i now have a little less than 73,000 miles. apparently this has been a major problem??? *tr
The instrument panel cluster on my gmc envoy 2004 is defective as it is on a multitude of other gm models between 2003 and 2005. one of the consequences is that the speedometer will not work or will report a faulty reading while operating the vehicle. this is an unsafe driving condition and for some reason gm has not yet issued a recall on this ipc problem for gmc envoys of the year 2004 even though other years of this model and other models of gm vehicles have been recalled for this exact issue. please help gm do the right thing by it's envoy owners. we have certainly bailed them out enough. there is another potentially deadly consequence of this issue. if one were to be driving the vehicle at 60mph using cruise control and the speedometer were to all of a sudden peg itself to 20mph, there would be a sudden and abrupt acceleration as the computer in the car attempted to regain 60mph even though the vehicle was already at that speed. thank you for your time and attention to this dangerous speed control issue. matt dye *tr
Instrument panel cluster issues in 2004 gmc envoy,. headlights and instrument panel lights flicker dim to bright. occurs while driving down the road very sporadic. diagnostic stated faulty instrument panel cluster. issue if not fixed, the vehicle could stall when driving and lose power. mine has started loosing power and stalling. faulty speedometer inaccurate, will go past 120mph or stay on zero, why no recall on these items gm is aware of this but as of today no action has been taken. *tr
I purchased a 2004 envoy off the showroom floor. first issue was an erratic speedometer, then non-working gas gauge, now it is all gauges. i have a picture with the car in park showing 15 mph, the digital reading shows a full tank of gas but the gauge needle is below empty and also no oil pressure or temperature. the entire cluster is faulty, not just one gauge. *tr
Speedometer on 2004 gmc envoy slt quit working. i found that this is a very common problem with gm vehicles, however they have not issued a recall for it. i feel that this could be a huge safety issue and that they are aware of it but continue to ignore complaints. knowing your speed is extremely important when driving. *tr
I purchased a used 2004 gmc envoy slt, with an extended warranty from grand prix auto group, hicksville, ny in august 2008. soon after purchasing the car it stalled while we were at a red light. immediately brought the truck back to the dealer and they said they fixed it, may i mention it never stopped stalling. then the speedometer broke again. it constantly says i'm traveling 120 miles an hour. once again, brought it back to the dealer, they tell me i need to go to a gmc dealer, i do, they replace the information cluster and speedometer, had to pay a $ 300.00 deductible. this was in march 2009. driving the other day october 2009 and the speedometer once again says 120. get pulled over, get a ticket for a broken speedometer. the officer was aware i was not traveling at that speed, and even when i tried to explain, wanted to hear none of it. so now here i am again, broken speedometer, engine that stalls often and a summons to boot. i need help and i don't know where else to turn the dealerships are of no help. jacqueline king *tr
The problem from what i can tell from researching is the instrument cluster and i have found many forums on the net that people are stating the same issues i am having. the speedometer gets stuck anywhere from 0-120 mph and though i have noticed that no fires or deaths have occurred is this what the nhtsa waiting for? someone to die from this happening? also, the tachometer, oil pressure gauge, and voltage indicator have recently been having issues as well. the issue with this is obviously not knowing how fast you are traveling (ie m.p.h.). i am being told this will be a $450 fix when in fact with as many people as i am reading are having these same issues it seems that gmc should be made to correct the problem themselves. is it because the government has so much invested in gmc that the problem is not being resolved? how many people need to file a complaint before the nhtsa will react? do i need to start posting to all the forums i encounter and get people to sign up? if i am the 55th person with just the '04 gmc envoy complaining about this issue then all the other years and models of gm and chevy from '02 through at least '06 must filing complaints, too. in total there must be enough to at least look into the matter so why are you stalling? a person not knowing how fast they are driving must be a safety issue especially through school zones and residential areas would you not agree? for us the issue started about a year-and-a-half ago and seems to be getting worse by the week. we may go a day without any incident then it starts happening all over again; it use to be that is would start only on the freeway but now it happens even around town. i will wait for a response from the nhtsa before getting this repaired, but i thought i would have received something about this by now being that i have been seeing info on the net about it for some time now, but i figure i need to get involved before anything is going to change. please respond immediately. *tr
The cluster gauge on my 2004 gmc envoy has gone completely out. i did some research online and have found this is a major issue with all envoys made during 2004/2005 yet to recall has been issued. at first it was sporadic but eventually, all of the gauges went completely out. *tr
Envoy xuv 2004 oil pressure stalled 80 or higher. gm has a tsb regarding issues with the clusters #07187, but they are not accepting that the envoy also has the same problems. dealers want to charge around $500 to $1000 to fix this problem which they know is happening on many models. *tr
Faulty speedometer in 2004 gmc envoy, bad steeper motors in all 6 gauges. speedometer inaccurate, will go past 120mph, will affect tach eventually, all gauges will go bad. the problem is faulty steeper motors gm was supplied these by delphi electronics. gm won a class action suit, why no relief to envoy owners? this affects all 2003-2004 envoys, they were included in the original service bulletin then removed? why no recall on these items gm is aware of this but as of today no action has been taken. *tr
My 2004 gmc envoy speedometer stopped working properly. there was no fore-warning. if i'm on the highway going 60 mph, it reads i'm goin 25 mph. the needle falls below "0" when idling. i've called a gmc dealer and they said there is no recall for this although i've read many exact complaints online. *tr
Instrument panel cluster issues. driver 1 resets to unknown driver, abs light, seatbelt light, 4-wheel drive, etc. lights flash on and off, battery gage fluctuates, headlights and instrument panel lights flicker dim to bright. occurs while driving down the road very sporadic. diagnostic stated faulty instrument panel cluster. issue if not fixed, the vehicle could stall when driving and lose power. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 gmc envoy. the contact stated that the speedometer and fuel gauge became inoperable. the dealer estimated that the repair would cost $500 at the contact's expense. on a separate occasion, the vehicle would only shift into first and second gear and would not accelerate over 35 mph. in addition, the rpms would rev higher than normal and the vehicle would hesitate when attempting to pick up speed. the contact heard a loud humming noise under the hood when attempting to accelerate. the dealer stated that a new transmission was needed. the repair would cost over $2,000. an independent mechanic stated that he could rebuild the transmission. the vehicle has not been repaired. the failure mileage was 44,386 updated 07/28/09 *bf the transmission failed at 58,000 miles. updated 07/31/09.*jb
My vehicle's instrument cluster fails on a regular basis after checking into the situation with gm dealers there is a recall on the sierra's and yukons which have the same cluster as my vehicle but gm refuses to stand behind the defect on the envoys. parts have not been replaced yet on my vehicle hoping that gm will wake up and realize this is a common problem on the envoys and that it requires attention. the issue occurs on a regular basis normally several times per month, after a few days the cluster will reset and work as normal but has been very frustrating to deal with. when problem occurs i have to use my gps navigator to tell what speed i am traveling. the cost of the replacement is approx. $650.00. *tr
The speedometer on my 2004 envoy has been inaccurate at least 5 times in the last 9 months. i noticed that this problem arises when there is a spike or dip in temperature outdoors. for over 24 hours the speedometer was stuck at 120 mph. the speedometer corrects itself over the course of 4 or 5 days depending on how many starts and stops i make around town. i see that gm isn't going to claim any responsibility on this matter so i just pay very close attention to my speedometer when driving and stay in the slow lane. can't afford to pay the big bucks for their mistake. *tr
Speedometer does not work at times. sometimes it will just stay at "0", others it will be at various speeds even while in park. *tr
My speedometer does not work in mt 2004 gmc envoy. i understand that some of the gmc pickups had the same problem and it was handled as a recall. when it began, it would hang up at a range between 60-90 mph. it now just sits at 0. i have been stopped for speeding in local neighborhoods in massachusetts, where i work for going anywhere between 5-15 mph over the speed limit. this has cost me money in fines and my auto insurance, it should be handled as a recall, gmc needs to step up to the plate. i inquired with my mechanic, and its about a $900.00 fix for me to repair! *tr
When traveling down the road and putting on the brakes the headlights and dash lights flicker. the flickering is so much that is looks like we are flashing other cars. *tr
On a 2004 gmc envoy, the whole odometer/speedometer went out. nothing worked and i had to get my whole instrument cluster replaced. *tr
I own a 2004 gmc envoy and the speedometer has stopped working correctly. it is very erratic and goes anywhere between 10-100 miles over the speed i am traveling. i've been stopped twice for speeding and received a fine for $170.00. gms states it is not a safety issue, i disagree! when i was stopped i tried explaining to the police officer what was wrong, however he didn't want to her it. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 gmc envoy. the speed gauge intermittently failed to work properly. the temperature and gas gauge also malfunctioned. the contact notified the manufacturer and was not offered any assistance. the manufacturer does not sell the parts for the vehicle and has purchase the parts from another distributor. the dealer informed him that he would have to go to another city to have his vehicle repaired. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 31894. the current mileage was 32,000.
The speedometer gradually decreased from interstate speed (70mph) to 0 mph while driving. speedometer fails to operate. i personally know 2 people who have had this happen on a 2004 envoy. *tr
Speedometer quit working on my 2006 gmc envoy. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 gmc envoy. the contact observed while driving the speedometer displayed an inaccurate reading regardless of the speed being traveled. in addition, there was a malfunction with the headlights remaining "on" when deactivated. the failure occurred intermittent. the fan clutch failed unexpectedly. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for inspection. the fan clutch was replaced. the contact had concern of the safety risk involved. the failure mileage was 50,000. the current mileage was 57,000.
My 2004 gmc envoy has developed an erratic speedometer. the speedometer reflects inaccurate speeds causing an unsafe driving condition. i contacted my local gmc dealer who researched to find no recall concerning this problem i then submitted my complaint to the bbb hotline and was rebuffed their also. i have consequently done additional research and have found that gm has issued a special coverage adjustment bulletin for 2003-2004 cadillac escalade, chevrolet avalanche, silverado, suburban and tahoe, gmc sierra and yukons. the speedometer unit in these models are very similar in both appearance and are manufactured by the same supplier gm uses. the adjust bulletin is #07187 dated september 28,2007 and covers the condition for a period of 7 years or 70,000 miles regardless of ownership. after visiting many gmc and chevrolet chat rooms it is readily apparent that this problem is very common and will eventually result in a fatal accident. i am requesting that the nhtsa formally investigate this problem before this happens. *tr
The tachometer would quit working but it happened only a couple of times in jan 2008 & again in june 2008 and when we turned the car off and started it the next time it seemed to be fine as if it needed reset. in jan of 2009 the speedometer began to fail at first occasionally then all the time at the same time the tachometer sporadically failed. so we took it to the dealership and had them replace the instrument cluster in the dash (they kept the old part) and gm refused to help with the problem sitting the mileage on the vehicle at the time of the repair. *tr
The tach on my '04 envoy with 67k miles started acting erratic and has completely failed just as all the other service bulletins . this has corrected itself buis till erratic. gm needs to address the faulty electronic gauges on these '04 envoys. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 gmc envoy. the contact stated that the speedometer suddenly stopped working. she called the dealer and was informed that the instrument cluster needed to be repaired. the dealer also stated that they would not be responsible for the repairs. through online research, the contact discovered that numerous people were experiencing the same failure. the vehicle has not yet been repaired; however, the contact believes that the failure was due to a manufacturer defect and a recall should be issued. she is unable to determine how fast she is driving. the failure mileage was 75,000 and current mileage was 84,000.
Problem started out as erratic reading with speedometer. after approx. 5 days speedo finally wouldn't register at all took vehicle to authorized dealer to be repaired - $555.00 charge to replace instrument panel and reprogram. called gm for financial help as i noticed there were alot of failures with gmc suv's and pick-up trucks. gm would not acknowledge there was a problem which i feel is totally disingenuous. speedometer is necessary to be working as a safety issue. because i was out of state at the time of part breakdown i felt i had no choice but to have problem fixed before my return trip home (1250 miles). judging how many other envoys have had same problem, i feel gm is dodging their responsibility i noticed that there has been class-actions against them for the same problem. *tr
I have a 2004 gmc envoy in which the speedometer has stopped working. i researched this on the internet and it is a common occurrence. i almost caused a wreck because the speedometer said i was going faster than i really was and the cars behind me almost ran into me. this is a safety issue that i feel should be investigated. could you please assist w any recall measures. it costs over 500.00 to replace this. *tr
My rpm gauge is not working. my speedometer works when using in stop and go mode or city driving. but when i am on a trip my speedometer will quit working accurately. it will reflect a much lower speed than i am going. my cruise control is often engaged when the speedometer stops working. but the rpm gauge no longer works at any time. i talked to someone at the chevrolet dealership and they said that the symptoms that i describe are very similar to the 2003/04 chevys that do have a recall. i have not taken any steps yet to fix. i was told that it would be $95 for a diagnostic service and that most likely it would cost $550 to fix (based on what they know about the chevys that are on recall). *tr
Speedometer malfuctions. *tr
Speedometer failed. at first it did not correctly reflect vehicle speed, then fluctuated rapidly over the course of several days, and finally failed completely. *tr
2004 gmc envoy instrument panel cluster suddenly started not working. it hasn't worked properly since it happened and reads incorrect speed, oil pressure, and fuel levels. nothing has been done to correct the failure by the dealer. *tr
My 2004 gmc envoy mph and rpm gauges are not working properly, i called the dealership and an extended warranty was put on all gmc/chevy trucks and suv for the dashboard cluster except for the envoy, any newer models. the part is at least 500 and advised can only be done by dealership due to programming. im furious, my truck is only at about 53,000 miles. this defect needs to be under recall for the envoy asap! *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 gmc envoy. while driving approximately 45 mph, the speedometer displayed an inaccurate reading regardless of the speed being traveled. in addition, the fuel gauge indicator displayed " empty fuel" regardless of how much fuel was in the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for inspection. the technician recommended that the vehicle be taken to an authorized dealer to be repaired. the vehicle has not been repaired at this time. the failure mileage was 40,000. the current mileage was 78,000. the vin was unavailable.
