Problems with 2002 Ford Windstar SERVICE BRAKES

On average, the 2002 Ford Windstar starts to “feel” problems with the SERVICE BRAKES and its various aspects after 185 209 miles.

Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES problems on 2002 Ford Windstar

I lost control on the highway i was driving i hit a pothole and my car when its own way i was coming home from the hospital from just giving birth two day earlier and i kept hearing a weird noise so i took my car to the shop and they said it was the lower control arm. *tr

All of the following happened at the same time: abs and brake lights went on and stay on. o/d light flashing. odometer and speedometer stop working. the electronic compass, remaining fuel info., automatic electronic diagnostic and electronic temp. showing errors. electronic sliding door would not open unless engine is not running. power windows stopped working 6 months ago, not sure if it is related. i had a mechanic replaced the alternator and checked the brakes. it did not fix the problems and there was nothing wrong with the brakes. i took it to ford dealer and i was told that the abs module could be the problem because they replaced a lot of them. the abs module supposedly messing up the whole electronic system. it has less than 65,000 miles and i'm scared to drive it because the electronic system might suddenly cause other problems and cause an accident. the electronic sliding doors already would not open unless the engine is not running. in case of an emergency or a crash, someone might not be able to get out and be trapped inside because the doors and windows would not open. i was told by a ford customer service that there is no recall to fix the problem or look into it even though they admitted they've been having similar problems to a lot of ford vehicles. *tr

Car bought in march 2014 from used car dealership. abs light and brake light started coming on in may. mechanic told me that this is a problem with the ecm and getting it replaced is costly. if i chose to replace it, the issue may occur again because ford has not resolved the issue on the actual part. brake failure concerns me because i have two children under 4 years of age in the car with me most of the time. this past weekend, the brakes did not respond when i decelerated. i had to put the car in park and shut off the engine to stop it. ford needs to look into resolving this major problem asap, as no driver should have to be worried that their brakes will fail while driving. *tr

As i was driving with my mother the abs and brake light came on. i pulled over turned the car off then on again. the lights turned off. but about two days later they both came on again. now they come on and off. *tr

Abs light comes on while driving, without touching the brakes. light then goes off when vehicle is turned off and restarted. after a few minutes, abs light comes back on. *tr

Abs light on also brake light on. *tr

Ford found that the rear axle had a hole in it causing the axle to shift to the right. recall work was done a few years ago. they said it was my fault and would not pay. abs and traction control light come on however reset when restarted. as of today they don't go off. *tr

While driving the abs light comes on an the emergency brake light come an stay on. *tr

The abs and brake lights came on just two weeks after i purchased my windstar. they would come on and off intermittently over the course of the next few weeks. i took the car to a mechanic and was told it was my ecu master relay which cost me almost $1000 dollars. after a few days the lights came back on again i took it back the mechanic and he said that maybe the part was faulty and he would provide me another. to which i asked for a refund because that was a brand new part it has to be more then the part. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. the contact stated while driving at various speeds, the abs and brake warning lights illuminated. the contact stated that the pedal sank to the floor when the brakes were engaged and in order to stop the vehicle the pedal had to be depressed several times. the failure recurred multiple times. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for a diagnosis. the technician stated that the abs power relay output circuit had malfunctioned. the vehicle had not been repaired. the manufacturer had not been notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

Abs and brake lights are on after running about 5-10 minutes intermittently. after that the car did not start. brought it to repair shop to scan and learned that abs system problem that might prevent starting system function. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. the contact stated while driving approximately 35 mph, the brake pedal went to the floor when depressed. the vehicle continued to accelerate over a curb and crashed into a tree. there was no personal injury. a police report was not filed. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where the scv switch was replaced. the manufacturer was notified and they informed that there was not a recall related to the defect. the approximate failure mileage was 234,000.

Braking distance suddenly increased. my abs light and trac off lights on. during driving my traction control will come on as i brake on dry pavement, i almost wasnt able to stop. the mechanic said my cruise control was leaking ( that has previously been fixed) but that want causing it. i will have to buy a abs module. it is parked right now due to scared to drive with my kids in the car and i'm a single mom and can't afford the module.

Abs light and traction control light illuminates after driving forward 150 yards. heavily salted chicago streets have caused corrosion under car. suspect abs failure due to salt and water corrosion in electrical connectors. high amperage abs electrical wires could short- out and cause a fire; an environmental, pollution and safety issue. *tr

Used the vehicle to go on a trip about 200 miles from home, the cruise control was working but the brake light stayed on. when i got back home and parked the vehicle for a couple of days, when i went to go back out in the van on another short trip and got on the interstate the cruise wouldn't work again. the brake light stays on all the time when before the cruise stopped working it was only intermittent. now the light is on all the time and the cruise isn't working at all. i can't use the van on trips o when i go a few miles away from home because the cruise don't work. i have a bad back and joints and rely on that cruise to help me get from point a to point b. thanks. ...updated 01/07/15 *bf the consumer stated the issues are on recall. updated 01/17/15

I have a 2002 ford windstar that, from time to time, has the abs and brake light come on. i have no braking problems when it does come on. *tr

The abs light and the brake light will frequently light up on the dash. if i am able to pull over and cut the car off, the lights will occasionally not come back on when i start the car again. however, if they don't come back on, i have no idea if they will stay off or if/when they might come back on. if i am unable to pull over, the lights will stay on for the duration of the ride. i have no idea if this is doing damage to the brakes or if it is just some sort of electrical short. *tr

Abs light on -- won't go off.. brakes are skipping (new pads / nothing wrong with new parts). *tr

Abs system activated under normal breaking conditions, caused extended breaking distance. has happened 13 times since the initial failure. dealer unable to replicate but scanned for codes and found c1185 which they said was failure of the abs controller/computer. they suggested $1200 in repairs but couldn't guarantee it would "fix the problem". have multiple abs fault codes all the time now. c1198, c1194,c1254, c1246, c1250, c1242 ,c1214, c1210, c1446 which all point to multiple failures in the computer. searching the internet it appears on http://www.fordwindstarrecall.info/ that a recall for this issue may be in the works as of 5/2014. *tr

Abs light came on during normal driving conditions for no apparent reason. car is very well maintained with good brakes and has relatively low miles. *tr

Abs and brake lights come on intermittently. i applied the brakes heavily and all 4 wheels locked up. the vehicle was uncontrollable while braking. the speedometer is erratic. the battery is dead sometimes after sitting overnight. the hazard lights come on by them selves. the door locks do not work properly. the tire indicator lights come on for no reason. *tr

Abs and brake lights have been turning on intermittently, when on abs is not functional. today on minimally slippery roads lights came on, abs needed at an icy stop sign, did not come on. rear ended the car in front of me. no damage to other car, front bumper on my car now cracked. abs still not working. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. the contact stated that while driving at 50 mph, the rear or the vehicle collapsed. the contact also mentioned that the abs warning light illuminated. the vehicle was towed to the dealer who informed the contact that the rear axle had fractured due to rust and the abs master relay sensor had malfunctioned. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure and current mileage was 140,000. the vin was unavailable.

Abs and brake light are on, mostly stay on constantly. braking distance suddenly increased. brake pressure decreased also. possible fire risk. *tr

Brake lights were coming on so we took it to have it looked at and the said it was a bad wire for the anti lock brake system and said there has been a problem with these in other windstars. *tr

I have an abs code c1185 which may be related to a faulty solder joint in the abs module. this renders the abs system ineffective. *tr

The abs, track off, brake light indicators, and check traction control intermittently illuminate. they remain on until the key is turned off, and then reset. the frequency is intermittent and not measurable. initial checks have no results as the lights are out when checked by a repair shop. *tr

My abs and brake lights have been coming on while driving and staying on for months. i am not sure if there is an issue with ford windstars in general or if there is an issue that causes this. *tr

Abs warning light comes on & off intermittently. can not re-set it, but the brakes seem to work good otherwise. is this a problem or has ford had a recall on this issue? i hear it is common. *tr

Red (brake) and yellow (abs) lights on intermittently. problem is worse in hot weather. see http://www.fordwindstarrecall.info/#brokensoldier seems like an abs (safety!) issue would be worth a recall. *js

Abs and brake light illuminated and experienced a burning electrical smell. fuse#10 was popped and lost dash functionality. went to ford today 8-14-13 and had recall 09s09 work performed and that did not fix the problem. my wife and i believe their is a serious electrical problem with the abs electrical control module, due to issues related to the recall 09s09. we hope that the van does not erupt into a fire. we still can smell an electrical burning smell. *tr

Abs light came on intermittently after 8/05/2013. had brakes checked, pads/rotors/drums appeared, tested ok. had brakes serviced (front pads/rotors replaced) 2/24/2014. light for abs came on again 07/01/2014. light comes on and stays on. turns off when restarting. seems to only occur in summer months. stopping distance seems to increase when abs light is on!!! *tr

Our abs and brake lights are on. we had the brakes replaced, but they are still on. our mechanic tells us it may be the abs control module, which they want over $1,000 to fix. we have read that this is a common problem with the windstar and it may be related to a defective part other than the abs control module. is there a recall on this item? *tr

While operating this van the abs/brake light will illuminate on the dash. this is an intermittent problem that sometimes comes on as soon as the vehicle is started, other times it will come on after driving for a mile or two. this causes the abs brake system to stop working and is a safety issue. i have had the codes checked many times and cleared with no other problems showing just to have it re-occur at a later time. it seems to be related to outside temperature. if it is really hot outside ( 90+ ) the light will come on quickly, when its cooler it may come on later in the day, or after driving further. *tr

Driving at 60mph, got to stop sign and tried to stop and the brake pedal sank to the ground, i pulled emergency brake and pulled to side of road just missing car in front of me. tried to pump brakes and just sank to ground each time. i checked brake fluid and it was full. drove backwards a few times and hit brakes to stop to adjust rear brakes, not much change. pumped brakes many times and seem to work after a few pumps. drove a bit forward and to stop had to pump brakes and they worked. drove home and brake pedal sank to ground, but pumping helped. after driving over 15min, brakes now work fine. took to garage and the are not sure what problem is. they want to change the abs module. the abs light is now on? did not notice the abs light on before. not sure what the problem could be. is there a recall for this? can't enter an address from canada, picked a state and zip to enter my info. thanks *tr

Abs comes on immediately upon putting the car into drive and driving for a couple seconds. i can hear a noise and the abs light comes on. *tr

Braking distance suddenly increased with both red brake and amber abs lights came on. that was scary and i barely could stop the vehicle to avoid an accident. this happened many times since then.

The lights come on after a few miles of operation and stay on until the engine is shout off. the next time the engine is started the car will travel a few miles and the lights will come on again. *tr

Abs light comes on for no reason. *tr

Abs light and brake light have been on for months off and on. have a slight brake fluid leak. was backing into my driveway and the o/d light came on and started flashing, the odometer went blank, speedometer stopped working and the a/c began blowing hot air. checked fuse #10 and found it was blown. replaced fuse #10. odometer and speedometer work but other lights still on. have an appointment to have the van looked at tomorrow. *tr

The abs light comes on occasionally. i checked for abs codes and found c1185 and many other codes. after some online research, i found that this problem is usually caused by a faulty abs control module. i never know when the system will malfunction so, will have know way of knowing if the abs system will work when it is needed. *tr

During normal driving both the brake warning light and the anti-lock brake warning light will come on and stay on. they don't always come on but if they do they don't shut off till you turn the ignition off. we never know if it's a real brake problem or just an electrical glitch. *tr

Yellow abs light and red brake warning light came on. abs system is no longer functional. *tr

Abs and brake lights on dash on due to ecu and hcu failure. *tr

Abs and brake warning lights light up on dash. when car is turned off and then back on, warnings are no longer lit. then they come back on later, at some random time. there does not seem to be a pattern or common situation, such as rain, etc. *tr

Abs brake light came on, as well as the red brake light. both lights come on and go off intermittently. have had vehicle checked by mechanic and local ford dealer. dealer states codes c1185, c1194, c1198, c1210, c1214, c1242, c1246, c1250, c1254; will need ecu hcu 2f2z2c219ba and 2f2c296ac which is obsolete. reports of this being a common problem with this vehicle and possible recall in future. *tr

My abs light & traction light are now on. also, needles jump on dash {odometer, speedometer, fuel & heat level} and cruise control does not work any longer {this has been happening since receiving my van back from the ford garage after 7 months from the axle recall repair over a year ago}. tried to bleed my brakes after replacing pads and caliper but cannot bleed front left or rear right. was told by a ford mechanic that this may be a problem in the abs module. as pertaining to a ford recall in october, 2009, all of the above problems may be connected to this recall. my van was inspected and nothing was done to it because, at the time, because it was deemed safe. i have since replaced the electrical tape on the wiring harness that they were suppose to be inspecting because it was falling off due to brake fluid on it (reason for said recall}. i plan on calling the garage in the am to have them reinspect my van for this recall because i cannot afford to replace any more parts in it. i have put a lot into it just since getting it back after the axle recall because it deteriorated sitting in their driveway for the winter due to salt. i hope nobody else is going through this. i love my van and have owned it for 11 years but it is getting too expensive for a one-income-household to repair due to bad parts or service. please have ford work to fix these problems so i can afford to keep my van. thank you! *tr

Abs light start flashing, lose cruise control, then over drive started flashing on the van, cut off o/d light still flashing. *tr

Late april 28,2013 abs and emergency brake warning lights came on and stayed on. may 1,2013 van's speedometer quit working. *tr

I was taking the kids to the park today for a birthday party and i notice my abs and my brake lights where on while driving. i pulled of to side of the road put the van in park and shut it off. i started the van an it was off this isn't the first time that this has happen. the first time that this has star was yesterday 4/20/2013 the van was in park and running for at least five minutes and they ( abs and brake lights ) came on did the same thing shut the van off and restarted it and they where off the other time was later that night at a drive-thru van in gear foot on the brake pedal and the lights was on ( abs and brake lights) don't know what is wrong but this need to get fix. *tr
