Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC problems on 2002 Ford Windstar

The antilock brake light went on in my 2002 ford windstar. i took it to the ford dealer, and they said it was the left front speed sensor. about 6 months later, the lights went on again - intermittently. they went on more and more as the weather got hotter, mostly when the engine is warm. i took it to a different repair shop to analyze the codes. it has too many error codes to list, which the mechanic says is an indication of an ecu failure. this shouldn't be happening! i am driving around with three kids in this vehicle, with no antilock brakes. it is going to be scary when winter comes and the snow and ice driving begins. i have to drive it like this though, because this is an expensive repair ( over $1,000)!!! the antilock brake lights have been on now for over 6 months straight. *tr

2002 ford windstar leaking brake fluid under master cylinder. *tr

This is an update to odi number 10278659. the cruise control actuator switch was identified as leaking brake fluid by my independant auto repair shop. they replaced the "cruise control actuator switch" part number yf1z 9c888 ab at a cost of $34.56 for parts and $22.50 for labor. they also replaced the wiring harness that connects to the switch. after this was done, the cruise control started to work consistently again. the abs light and brake warning light still come on intermittently. sometimes i have noticed they go on after i hit a bump. once they go on, they remain on for the duration of the journey (until the car is turned off). *tr

Ford 2002 windstar. in may 2009 the abs and brakes warning likes came on twice over the course of a couple of days. took the van to our shop, but the lights had gone out. the shop thought it might just be a light problem. lights remained out until august 2009. both cam one intermittently. took the van to the shop and this time it was determined that the abs control module is bad. over the past week i have researched the problem and found it to be a potential future recall issues pending nhtsa finding.*tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. while driving 30 mph, he noticed that the antilock brake light illuminated. the dealer state that the speed sensor and the abs module failed. the estimated cost for repair was $900.00. the manufacturer will be notified of the failure. the current and the failure mileages were 130,000.

Service brakes ,hydraulic antilock abs warning lights on at intermittent times while driving. *tr

I own a 2002 ford windstar. for the last year the abs light (yellow) and the brake warning light (red) has intermittently been lighting up on the instrument panel. on aug 16, 2009, i noticed fluid leaking from under the van. i found the leak coming from the brake pressure differential deactivation switch under the master cylinder. as i searched the internet for a replacement part, i found that this has been a recurring issue for the 2002 windstar, which as i assume you have been informed, has been the root cause of some fires with the windstar. is there or will there be a recall for this issue? at this time i feel the vehicle is unsafe and i am very uncomfortable driving it. *tr

Brake warning & abs lights come on. i had the brakes checked and they said they were ok.. the lights come on and go off at will. no one seems to know what's wrong. i have heard of strange things happening. like fires and accelerating. *tr

I have had a continual brake fluid leak on this vehicle. in addition, while driving the vehicle on 08/06/2009, the abs light and brake light suddenly came on, and the speedometer, odometer, and air conditioning stopped working. my mechanic replaced the #10 fuse, which fixed the problem for one day, then the fuse blew again. the ford trouble code c1185 came up on the diagnostic computer, and my mechanic suggested i replace the abs module. looking at the switch in question, it is covered in brake fluid. i now have no air conditioning, speedometer, odometer, or abs system functionality, along with a chronic brake fluid leak. please investigate this and make ford recall either the defective abs module, the brake deactivation switch, and the leaky master cylinder! hopefully, all three of these items will be included in a recall! *tr

My 2002 ford windstar 's abs & brake light illuminates all the time. sometimes i hit a bump in the road and the light will go out for a time and return again with another bump or just comes on in about 20 to 30 minutes. i live in nc and i don't see my state on the recall list. i see others have the same complaint. the dealership says the cost is $1000 to repair. it should be free. he says a sensor in the rear axle or fracture i maybe the problem. if this is the problem it could cause an increase of a crash. the wheels are prevented from locking. *tr

Abs, traction, and brake light comes on. *tr

1. normal driving although problem increases with warmer weather. 2. abs and brake lights illuminate consecutively and abs brake system deactivates increasing stopping distances despite fusible link installed by local ford dealer under nhtsa campaign id number : 09v399000 3. ford dealer and independent shop scan code c1185 however parts replacement does not remedy. *tr

Both the yellow and red brake light comes on. bad anti-lock brake control unit. *tr

Brake and abs lights come on in hot weather. *tr

Abs and brake lights keep coming on. cruise control not working. speedometer, odometer and airconditioning have also stopped working. due to short in the cruise control disable switch aka brake pressure differential deactivation switch located under the master cylinder caused from brake fluid leaking onto it. this in turn blew the #10 fuse. this switch is covered with brake fluid and could start a fire at any time. i have stopped driving it until i can replace the switch and clean off the brake fluid. *tr

Abs and brake light on intermittently. took to dealership and told that the following codes were showing up: c1185, c1242, c1198, c1254, c1250. they replaced the ba control at a cost of $981.21. *tr

Braking distance has suddenly increased along with abs and brake light intermittently on. *tr

2002 ford windstar yellow abs light on with red brake light intermittently, started last week. checked with all brakes with no problem. both brake and abs work just fine. *tr

This happened to my 2002 ford windstar minivan. i pulled in my drive way and my car was pouring dark gray smoke. i turned off the car and popped the hood. the smoke began to dissipate and i discovered the source of the smoke was coming from a "plug" underneath the master cylinder for the brakes. it continued to smoke for about an hour then it stopped. when i tried to start the car again the odometer was blank, the speedometer would not register and all the brake lights (on the dash warning lights) were on. it is at the shop, they say fuses are also blown and i am already $180.00 into the repair, but if the abs computer does not go back on i will have to take it to the dealership!!!! *tr

I have a persistent problem with the red brake light and the abs light illuminating on the dashboard of my 2002 ford windstar. through on line research i have discovered that the issue is leaking brake fluid that can cause a fire. i do not understand why ford has not recalled the vehicles to repair the problem. i confirmed with ford today that there is no such recall. i am having the problem repaired tomorrow and would like to see the nhtsa take action against ford on this issue. *tr

From time to time, the abs light will come on and stay on, would shut off vehicle, wait a few seconds, and restart it in order to "turn off" light, sometimes would go out itself while driving. *tr

Anti locking brake system intermittent due to abs system control module defective. *tr

2002 ford windstar - after driving for some time, traction control, abs, and brake lights on dash illuminate, along with an audible alarm. lights go off if car is turned off and on again, only to return later unpredictably. analysis to date indicates either and ecm/ecu or abs control module failure.*tr

This all started about a year ago with a brake fluid leak and an intermittent amber and red abs and brake warning indicators on the dashboard indicating a failure of the abs system. it is now to the point that the lights are on all the time. i had the recall 09s09 work completed by ford and they said that the module is causing the problem but they would not cover it under this recall. ford recommended that it be fixed because it is a safety hazard and will cause increased breaking distances. based on this feedback from my local ford dealer i am submitting this complaint. *tr

2002 windstar - brake and abs indicator lights on dashboard intermittently activated. lights will come on at random, sometimes at engine start, other times while driving. both lights will illuminate at the same time. turning the engine off and on will cause them to go out. *tr

Brake pressure differential deactivation switch leaking fluid and causing complete failure of breaking system. *tr

2002 ford windstar: the brake pressure differential deactivation switch (2b264) located under the master cylinder (behind the air filter) over time developed a leak that lead to a fire. the leaky switch at worst causes a fire at the point where it connects to the abs ecm module. the car was off. i was standing nearby when a big pop and a great deal of smoke started coming out from under the car. when i looked under the car, there was a small fire. i used a fire extinguisher to put the fire out. *tr

2002 ford windstar brake pressure deactivation switch failure. caused fuse #10 to blow due to leaking brake fluid. made odometer, speedometer, cruise control, a/c not work. disconnect abs - would rather chance slipping on ice than fire. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. while driving 55 mph, the abs light illuminated and smoke appeared underneath the vehicle. the contact assumed that the electrical unit was at fault. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, but would have to be repaired at the contact's expense. the failure has occurred approximately five times. the contact has decided not to repair the vehicle at this time. the dealer stated that the abs control module needs to be repaired. the failure and current mileages were 35,000.

Vehicle became having intermittent abs light and brake light activation while driving. this began in 2007. i had it checked and the dealer advised it was a control module problem not covered under warranty. i checked on line to get a better story, which appears to have been reported many times. over the past 2 months march/april 2009 the problem appeared to become worst. finally cruise control became intermittent and then quit. i checked brake pressure switch found fluid in and around the switch which is one of the reported problems with the windstar. the abs system and cruise control are currently inop. there are no blown fuses. *tr

The brake pressure cruise deactivation switch on my 2002 windstar has leaked brake fluid down onto the wiring below the brake master cylinder. i have purchased the replacement switch from my nearest ford dealer. but now my cruise control does not work, and the horn does not work, and the abs and brake warning lights come on intermittently. *tr

I have a 2002 windstar. for over a year the abs and parking brake light come on and stay on especially when it is warm outside. the dealership wants over $1000 to replace the abs module even though this is a well documented problem with this make and model and there are documented cases of fires associated with this problem. *tr

Rack and pinion steering split, intake manifold had to be replaced, tire rod fixed, upper plenum replaced, abs and brake light comes on, leaks coolant, etc. etc. etc. *tr

Ford windstar sel 2002 after approx 1 hr of driving, the brake and abs warning lights would illuminate and the check traction control message would flash on the information display. problem would usually resolve after being left over night. the frequency of the intermittent failure would increase as weather got warmer. eventually it would occur directly at first start in the morning. *tr

brake, abs brake, cruise control, and speedometer/odometer electrical problems my dash lights are on and off all the time went to 3 mechanic they all checked my brakes, abs and could not find a problem it goes on whenever it wants stays on for weeks then comes back on while driving this has been doing for over a year. i even put stickers over the lights that i can see while driving. i still think there is a electrical wiring problem it is very annoying. i can not afford to get another vehicle . i see there are a lot of complaint about same problem my niece has one does the same thing and my brother in law in west virginia his is doing it too so i really thing ford needs to check into this before someone's van catches fire or hurt some one. *tr

Intermittent fault in the abs system that causes the abs and traction control system to disengage. fault causes "abs" "brake" and trac off" indicators to turn on. fault seems to happen more frequently in warmer temperatures. *tr

Abs yellow and red brakes lights come on. just adding my complaint to the list. spent $400 to replace front axle they thought was the problem but is not. happened at around 90,000 miles. *tr

Abs and brake light come on intermittently. from information found online a common problem with this model and has lead to some fires. have not taken to dealership yet. *tr

2002 ford windstar w/abs. the amber abs warning light and red brake warning light come on simultaneously. i had the electronic hydraulic controlunit scanned for error codes and it was determined that the above reference electronic hydraulic control unit was defective. the error codes were c1185, c1233, c1235, c1236, u1262, c1446. it appears that ford intentionally built into the 2002 windstar an intentional expensive failure mechanism in which the aluminum heatsink in the above mentioned electronic hydraulic control unit stresses the cheap circuit board in the same unit causing the circuit board to fail. worse yet, ford charges approximately $1000.00 just for the new electronic hydraulic control unit. then you must pay them to download the software into the part, and then the part must be installed at a huge labor cost. these are brakes and therefore this is a very serious safety hazard. further, as i know you are aware, this is an extremely wide spread problem costing consumers thousands of dollars each for this vehicle obsolescence that was intentionally designed in by ford. it is my hope that you will force ford to recall these dangerous and faulty vehicles. *tr thank you, michael s. edwards

The abs, brake, and trac active lights come on intermittently. they don't come on during some trips, come on during some trips and stay on until the car is turned off. anytime the lights are on, the abs system does not work. evidently this is caused by an aluminum plate that when warm (during summer months or after being driven for a while) expands and interferes with the connection. *tr

Abs indicator light showing. abs connector harness to abs module shorted out. was actually smoldering and melting when mechanic was performing diagnostic inspection. *tr

Red brake light went on in my 2002 ford windstar. merchants tire checked and indicated that the cruise control switch to the master cylinder has been leaking brake fluid. *tr

2002 ford windstar abs and brake light on. under carriage started on fire while car parked in parking garage.*tr

I own a 2002 ford windstar that continues to have issues with the "brake" and "abs" lights lighting on my dash. this issue does not seem to affect stopping and is not constant but is intermittent. not trouble codes are registered in the on board computer. *tr

2002 ford windstar:abs and brake warning lights in dashboard on. abs not working. was told very common problem...defect with abs. *tr

Brake and abs dash lights stay on most of the time when can is on. *tr

Abs/brake light on in my 2002 ford windstar when i bought it, i had told the dealer that it was on two years ago when i had purchased it they have done nothing to repair it i have contacted my local ford dealer and no recall came up. now my van will not pass inspection i need help !!~!!!! *tr

Abs and brake light come illuminate on a daily basis. first noticed after hitting a bump on the highway about a year ago... since then the light will come and go off at will. occasionally there may be a sluggish feeling when in drive. i had it inspected but no one can tell me anything. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. the contact stated that she noticed that the abs and service brake warning lights consistently illuminated on the instrument control panel. additionally her vehicle spontaneously loses brake fluid. if the brakes fail while driving, her increase for vehicle crash and safety hazard are increased . she is in the process of having the vehicle inspected to determine the cause of the failure. the failure and current mileages were 71,000.

The abs brake system has failed. the manufacturer states the control module is defective. the brake system was serviced in june, 08, with replacement of the front disc brakes and rotors. there are no leaks and the fluid level is okay. during the week of 11/10 the abs light and brake light came on. the fluid level was checked and determined to be okay. the abs light does not come on immediately with vehicle start up. the vehicle has to run for 15 minutes before the light will come on. the light comes on everytime the vehicle is driven if the length of driving is longer than 15 minutes. the failure has resulted in not having the abs system functioning. at this point there have been no repairs done to the vehicle. the ford dealer has read a code of c1185 from the computer system. my visual inspection of the control system under the vehicle does not show any visible corrosion. the vehicle has 78,000 miles. *tr
