Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC problems on 2002 Ford Windstar

We had the wiring harness recall performed in june 2010. shortly after the recall was performed the abs, brake & trac control lights started to illuminate intermittently. we have replaced 2 abs sensors among other things however the lights continue to come on. took van to dealer today for axle recall & informed them of abs, brake & trac light issue. they said wiring harness was replaced & there was no leakage @ the time they replaced. i asked them to please look & see if they noticed any signs of leakage around abs module. after 2 minutes they came back & said no. they said that it was probably a sensor when i told them they have been replaced they said well we would have to hook car to machine & check codes which would cost me $80 (mind you auto zone is free). i have come to understand that there are many ford windstar owners who have the exact same problem and i believe that this problem is due to faulty materials or wiring and that abs module needs to be replaced but because it's so costly ford will not recall the part. i have three young children that are being driven in this vehicle. i don't feel safe driving this vehicle without the proper safety features i was promised - including anti-lock brakes. ford holds a lot of peoples lives in their hand due to this problem (whether it be the car catches on fire or loses braking power), they can't replace a life or an entire family for that matter but they can surely replace a faulty part. please i am begging to make ford recall this problem that is affecting so many people, make it part of the original recall, it's all related!!! *tr

My abs and brake light keeps coming on at random after a few minutes of driving. it started a couple months ago, then stopped. over the last 2 days, it's started up again. it's always after a couple minutes of driving. brakes have been inspected and are supposedly fine. *tr

2002 windstar received recall to fix fire problem but now i'm having issues. abs/brake/traction control warning lights on and message board says check trac control. online forums i've read seems to suggest this is an ongoing problem with a defective e.c.m. it was sporadic at first, but now a constant occurrence. please have fomoco deal with this quality defect so i do not have to fork out any money i do not have to spend. *tr

I have a 2002 ford windstar minivan. i took the van to the local dealership to have my traction control checked because the lights(abs, brakes, trac off) on the dash come on and stay on. this vehicle does not have any current recall orders and the dealership confirmed that. i had them check my van to find out why the lights are staying on. this is what i was told, they said that my hydraulic control unit (hcu)is leaking fluid onto my ecu (abs control module computer) shorting the system out. they told me the way to fix this problem is to replace the ecu(abs control module computer) which cost $2000. how is replacing the computer going to fix the leak? according to records the recall 09s09 (scds) was repaired on this vehicle. this concerns me because their is still fluid(brake) leaking onto a electronic component which poses as a fire hazard. according to complaints i have read this is a common concern for many other windstar owners. the abs issues are directly related to the leaking scds(recall 09s09). i am going to personally check the leak to verify the proximity of the location of the leak to the scds. i feel this may be a issue ford has to address. please note i have sent a memo to them first, and i hope to receive a response. i will not hold my breath though. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. while driving approximately 40 mph the abs and brake warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the computer system for the abs brake system may have failed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer stated that her vehicle was not included in any related recalls. the service lights have continued to illuminate on the instrument panel. the failure and current mileages were 115,000.

Abs light comes on, abs system not active, occurs when car and outside temperatures are hot. diagnostic indicates ecm board for abs is bad. current recall for brake pressure differential deactivation switch had been completed. braking distance suddenly increased.

Abs light is continually on even though the brakes have been repaired multiple times, brake light is continually on even though they have been repaired multiple times, braking time has increased as if they breaks do not always immediately work, brakes turn on squeel without warning, burning smell. i am about to take the van in again. i think the brake fluid is now leaking and damaging the engine. *tr

I have a 2002 ford windstar lx. my an has been receiving regular service ever since we purchased it in 2003. i've had a abs and brake light turning on a random times and it has begun to affect brake stopping distance. i've looked into this problem and it seems to be a very common problem with the windstars. many say this problem can be fixed by replacing the abs ecm module which is very costly to replace. *tr

2002 ford windstar. abs and brake light continually on. braking distance substantially increased..i feel it is very unsafe as i transport 3 young children. i recently had this vehicle in for the rear axle recall and was given a rental minivan. the braking on that van was very much better than on my van. i am worried. ford dealer told me he wouldn't fix without recall number. i would like to know when this will be issued. please help. *tr

Brake light (red) and abs brake lights (yellow) stay on. i went to replace fuse #10 and it keeps blowing out. speedometer and odometer do not function. cruise control does not work. a/c does not work. the o/d light flashes after about 30 seconds after the vehicle starts and continues to blink until the vehicle is shut off. i took it into a ford dealership today to have them perform the 09s09h recall and it did not change anything. all issues seem to be associated with this 'leaker' scds that was replaced, but that caused further damage to the abs ecm unit causing it to fail. *tr

The abs light on the dashboard of my 2002 ford windstar mini-van is on all the time. the ford dealer told me that i would have to replace the abs module for a price of $750.00 plus labor to correct this. then i received a letter from ford stating a recall involving the cruise control mechanism was needed to make my windstar safe from a possible fire. i had ford do the no-cost fix which amounted to a jumper wire with a fusible-link. however, this did not fix the existing abs problem. now, my speedometer is not functioning properly. i have read up on this problem and find that many windstar mini-vans manufactured between 1999 and 2003 have had similar problems and they all are related to the abs system. i believe that ford should completely fix these problems and owners should not have to pay an amount exceeding $1000.00 to do so. these problems were apparently inherent in these model years and repairs or replacements should be the responsibility of ford, not the vehicle owners. i can still drive my windstar but will have to have the speedometer problem fixed at a minimum (if that is possible singularly). not having the abs problem fixed may lead to further complications, but i cannot afford these costly repairs at this time. *tr

I have had a continual brake fluid leak on this vehicle. in addition, while driving the vehicle on 06/06/2010, the abs light and brake light suddenly came on. in speaking with our ford mechanic (ford dealer), he referenced how this has been an issue on many windstars. the abs light and brake fluid leaks, according to him, has been a point of concern. is anything being done about this? *tr

I own a ford windstar lx 2002. i had the abs light recall done and the abs and brake lights still comes on and with no obvious reason. also it feels like the braking distance has suddenly increased when the light comes on. *tr

I own a 2002 ford windstar. in june i had a recall done on my brake system. (recall # 09509) i have a problem with the brake light and the abs warning light coming on a few minutes after i start driving. i had the brakes inspected last week when i had to take the car back to the dealer because the back axel was cracked. i complained about the brake lights coming on but the dealer told me that he check the brakes and there was nothing wrong with them. but the to brake lights keep coming on each time i drive this car. *tr

I have a 2002 ford windstar that the brake light and abs light stay on. i am told by my mechanic that the electronic control module is no good and needs to be replaced. the brakes do not function properly now on the van and it is a hazard to drive. *tr

Abs lights come on and off at different times. brake fluid was checked, it is at the correct level. there was a recall for 2000 model windstar with the same problem they received a brake repair. *tr

Braking distance suddenly increased. *tr

My 2002 ford windstar started this year in may having the abs and brake warning lights come on intermittently. i had the system checked at reynolds ford, norman, ok in july. they flushed the system and found no problems. the lights still come on regularly! [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

After having the 2002 windstar serviced at a ford dealership for a recall related to abs failure and possible fire we noticed a burning plastic smell. the smell lasted the entire day after picking the windstar up at the dealers. we immediately called the service dept to report the smell and they stated the burning smell could not be related to the service they performed. the abs and brake light came on later that day and has now been on intermittently ever since. we have noticed an increased stopping distance in wet weather. we have now had the windstar in and had it diagnosed and the codes state that all 4 abs wheel speed sensors have failed. that would include the brand new wheel speed sensors that have been replaced in an effort to get the abs and brake lights to go out. when the codes are cleared the abs light will stay off anywhere from minutes to hours depending on each reset. it is my belief that the brake problem is related to the recall. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. the contact was driving 25 mph when the anti-lock braking system (abs) warning light illuminated. the dealer was contacted and the contact was advised to check the brake fluid levels. the contact was able to restart the vehicle as it resumed normal operation. the failure persisted intermittently. the vehicle was taken to a local mechanic where the contact was advised that the computer could possibly the cause of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 74,000 and the current mileage was 76,807.

Abs and traction control failed - lights on dash and "check trac ctrl" on dash readout. this caused accident under adverse conditions. *tr

2002 ford windstar had the recall 09s09 done today the abs and brake light still keep coming on and loosing brake fluid. *tr

After having a cruise control safety recall done on our 2002 ford windstar, the "abs" light comes on and stays on most of the time now! i am assuming the "abs" system is not working and we might have a safety issue when it comes to emergency braking situations. *tr

I have a ford windstar 2002. its abs and brake lights come on during summer. in the recall last year, a ford dealer changed the deactivation switch on the car. but after that, i still have the same problem: in warm weather, abs and brake lights come on while driving. *tr

Recall of brake switch (09s09) on my 2002 ford windstar. they replaced the switch but i still have abs lights that come on periodically. it has not been completely fixed and the dealership says they will not cover it. *tr

2002 windstar abs/brake lights come on then suddenly braking distance increases. was told by dealer it is an ongoing issue with this model that abs modules overheat and fail. very dangerous!!! *tr

Abs brake light comes on all the time when i'm driving the 2002 ford windstar sel. it started last year. i've replaced all the pads & shoes and bled the brake fluid. but it's still on. i've read many complaints about this online and wanted to add my complaint to the list hoping for a ford recall. *tr

2002 ford windstar - the abs light comes on (typically when the van is warm). recall 09s09 has been performed but has had no effect on the abs light coming on issue. *tr

Braking distance suddenly increased ( abs brake light stays on ). *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. the contact stated that the vehicle was experiencing an increased stopping distance whenever the brakes were applied. this failure occurred after the vehicle was repaired under the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 09v399000 (vehicle speed control). the contact also stated that the anti-lock brake and brake lights were illuminated on the instrument panel. the speed control deactivation switch was not leaking and there were no brake fluid leaks either, but the consumer was experiencing braking issues. the failure mileage was 100,000 and the current mileage is 115,000. updated 9/13/11 *cn updated 09/28/11

We own a 2002 ford windstar and participated in the recent recall for the speed control. about a month after the recall fix, our brake lights (including abs) came on. when we took it to our mechanic, he said the abs control module is damaged and needs to be replaced. after doing some research on the web, it appears this is a well know issue (abs ecm failure - abs brake light). we don't have the money to fix this issue, and would like the ford dealer to submit a recall. thank you *tr

2002 ford windstar - had recall from oct 2009 (vehicle speed control) done on vehicle. sometime the car will start and no issues appear in the driver instrument gauges other times the issue will appear at startup. if it is fine at startup, sometimes while driving (sometimes over bumps, sometimes just over time), the problem will appear. the problem is that the "brake", "abs", and "trac control" lights turn on, indicating a problem with the car's braking system. car still brakes fine under normal conditions, but it appears that the abs system and traction control systems stop functioning resulting in the loss of those critical safety systems. shutting the car off and restarting resets the system and everything is fine until it happens again. problem is getting more regular, almost occurring every time we drive the car. *tr

Braking distance suddenly increased. abs and brake light has been coming on after a short time and staying on after the car is driven for a while. vehicle locked up the brakes while driving, dealer states that the ecu needs to be replaced-related to the ford recall 09s09. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. the contact stated that the abs and brake lights illuminated on the instrument panel. the abs would fail when the light illuminated. the cruise control and speedometer also malfunctioned. the vin was unavailable. the failure mileage was approximately 109,000 and the current mileage was approximately 115,000.

In my 2002 windstar the abs and brake lights come on while driving and will go off only to come back on another time while driving. in 2009 we had the safety recall taken care of, but it did not resolve the issue. now i am noticing while i have the van running, heat and radio on, the radio and clock lights will go on and off. also, the back doors do not always unlock and it will take several times of pressing the power door locks to unlock before they will unlock. i am fearful there will be an issue and i will need to get my daughter out quickly and won't be able to because of the door lock issue. *tr

Abs and brake lamp still on after recall for 2002 ford windstar. *tr

While driving at normal speeds the abs, brake and trac lights come on and stay on. the van was stopped and when restarted, the lights were off. this has repeated almost every day and continues until today. there are no codes and there seams to be no effect on the van (except maybe the anti lock brakes not working). *tr

Abs and traction control lights light up on my dashboard intermittently on my 2002 ford windstar. i went to the ford dealer and they reported that there was no problem as i would still have braking power just not abs brakes which is one of the reasons i bought the car. have lost the use of my car due to the axle recall since september but ford issued a lease vehicle. now i am worried about the abs and traction control lights. *tr

Braking distance suddenly increased. abs & brake light stays on. was advised by a ford service shop that the abs module was bad. they also said that they have seen this happen before. they tried to get ford to cover it, but they would not. *tr

I just had the recall repaired on my 2002 ford windstar. the next day after the recall was performed while driving it the abs and brake lights came back on. *tr

The computer for our antilock brake system on our 2002 ford windstar keeps going out, rendering our antilock brakes useless. this is, of course, a serious safety concern. this problem has been diagnosed by both an independent mechanic and a ford service technician. although this problem has been frequently reported by consumers as being related to a ford recall on the cruise control system, and the ford service technician expressed his opinion that the problem was related to the recalled problem, ford refuses to replace or even subsidize this 850 dollar part. *tr

My 2002 windstar has the brake and abs light issue. i brought it into my ford dealer to have the recall done october 30th. a few weeks after my brake light started coming on again. everytime i use my brakes the light will come on and then shut off....great job ford..i guess your quick fix didn't work! *tr

My abs & brake light on dash board keeps coming on when driving. dealer says there is no recall for this. *tr

Bought this van used. almost immediately, the abs and brake light would come on the instrument panel for no reason. the vehicle still operates normally. after turning off and restarting, the lights go off. they may not come on again for days. it seems to happen more in warmer weather. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. while driving the abs and service brake warning lights illuminated on the instrument control panel. the brake fluid reservoir was leaking fluid onto the cable, which caused the vehicle speed cruise control and the abs to fail. brake fluid was added to the reservoir by the contact. the dealer was notified and a technician stated that the abs cable needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired; however, there was a fire under the hood after the vehicle was repaired. the current and failure mileages were 86,000.

Abs failure windstar 2002 code c1185. it seems to be a common problem that ford is not doing anything about. i took my van to a dealer im having the abs module replace. *tr

Hi, i have had a few problems for a long period of time, but recently i have been noticing even more problems. the following problems include, loss of brake fluid (problem # 1)brake light (red) (problem # 1 or problem # 2)fire or smoke coming from under the van abs ecm area while off. (problem # 1)speedometer and odometer stop working. (problem # 1)cruise control will not activate or deactivates without warning. (problem # 1)abs brake light (yellow) (problem # 2 or problem # 1)brakes turn on squeal without warning. (problem # 2). each of these problems have a occurred at least once, many more than once. my brake light goes on about every day as does the abs brake. so far nothing has been replaced because there are so many things to replace i don't know what to do. please recall this van for it is a huge safety hazard and i do not want to be behind the wheel when something bad happens. please help me. *tr

The brake light and abs light come on intermittently. it occurs most often in the summer in warm weather and when i go over bumps in the road. in cooler weather if i go over a bump in the road the brake and abs come on, just by pulling off the road and shutting the engine off and restarting the car the brake and abs lights may stay off. it has gotten worse over time. originally it was every couple of months. now it seems to come on at least a couple times a week. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. the contact stated that while driving 10 mph the abs lamp, torque converter lamp and the brake warning lamp illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer but not repaired or diagnosed. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 58,000 and current mileage was 65,000. updated 10/06/11 *bf updated 10/5/11 *cn

My brakes are working fine. but my abs light keeps coming on for the past year. prior to this, i had my oxygen sensor replaced. there is no definite movement that proceeds the light coming on, it can happen when i hit a bump, or when i simply drive along. it is becoming more and more recurrent. i was told it would be over $1,000 to replace, although the brakes were recently replaced, this did not remedy the problem. *tr
