We have classified the 126 complaints from 2002 Ford Windstar about VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL into the following categories.
The abs light comes on and stays on the red brake light comes on and stays on it is throwing 9 code starting with c1185 and 8 other that are connected with the first code i ave tried and tried to fix the problem many times it will not pass a safety check. i have done research and his can be dangerous and very unsafe i know it can catch a fire and also the brakes may lock up.

The abs sensor light comes on after a minute of driving. sometimes the emergency brake light will come on when braking. this happen to me after putting in new wheel bearings. then i put in new abs sensors still have problem. alot of other people on the internet are having same issue as me. the i put in speed control deactivation switch. still have same issue. *tr
Abs lights on. speedometer don't work and overdrive light keeps blinking ..speed control fuse keeps blowing. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. the contact stated that the vehicle accelerated independently. the contact also stated that the instrument panel gauges spiraled back and forth. in addition, there was smoke coming from the front end of the hood. the contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired under nhtsa campaign number: 09v399000 (vehicle speed control). the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 81,000.
Approx., a year ago my abs module went bad and i had it checked by a mechanic to verify that fact. just recently my speed control deactivation switch went bad and leaked,. now i found out there is a connection between both the switch and the abs bad module. ford does not have a recall on the abs system, but they do on the above switch. very possibly the high cost of the module has kept them from having a recall!!! i have read complaints about the same problem from another ford van owner. also the switch was changed approx. 5 years ago and it went bad again.( per a ford recall then) there should be a definite recall on windstar van abs systems and as a safety issue---ford should replace the switch and wire harness again! ..updated 08/12/14 *bf
Follow-up on odi # 10593430. on may 26, 2014, after ford dealership in fort walton beach, fl kept my vehicle for a week to fix the cruise control and seat latches recall, i was finally able to pick up my van. they also checked the cause of odometer and speedometer to stopped working, abs and brake light remained on, sliding doors not working, and o/d light flashing; i was told the cause is a defective abs module. they charged me $114.27 to diagnosed the problem and quoted me $1,265.00 to replace the abs module. i showed to ford service advisor, andrew tompitch, a print-out from nhtsa website stating that part of fixing or remedy to the cruise control recall was to "inspect the abs control module connector and repair as necessary." "repairs will be completed free of charge." yet ford charged me for this service and told me that the problems were not the same since my vehicle's scds supposedly did not leak. how could i verified what he told me was true when he wouldn't let me enter the work bay to watch what the technician was doing to my vehicle? andrew admitted that the abs module is defective and that they had replaced several modules due to the same problems as my van. but andrew said it's not part of the recall and wouldn't replace it free of charge. if ford used defective parts such as the abs module, then ford should be responsible to replacing the defective abs module and recall it before a life is lost! *tr
My vehicle was taken in to ace ford in woodbury , nj as part of a series of recalls. the 09s09 speed control campaign was one and they did the fixes as well as the rear axle. after getting my vehicle i noticed my abs light was on , my odometer has all dashes , my brake light is on , my speedometer does not work and my o/d light blinks fast constantly. service was closed at the time so i drove it home. upon driving every bump i hit it felt like my back end was going to fall off. i took it back the next day on may 21st , 2014 and complained about the issues. they did not seat my rear axle properly and they say they fixed it. as for my dashboard issues , i was told that the 09s09 speed control was installed and it then made another part fail. they said (dealer and corporate ford) , they will not replace it for free. i have to pay $390 for the part and then labor. i have been in talks with ford to no avail. i did some minimal research on the internet and found many other people have had the same issue. ford will not replace the part. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. while driving various speeds, the speedometer would become stuck at 20 mph. the failure recurred on numerous occasions. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 09v399000 (vehicle speed control). the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000.
Used the vehicle to go on a trip about 200 miles from home, the cruise control was working but the brake light stayed on. when i got back home and parked the vehicle for a couple of days, when i went to go back out in the van on another short trip and got on the interstate the cruise wouldn't work again. the brake light stays on all the time when before the cruise stopped working it was only intermittent. now the light is on all the time and the cruise isn't working at all. i can't use the van on trips o when i go a few miles away from home because the cruise don't work. i have a bad back and joints and rely on that cruise to help me get from point a to point b. thanks. ...updated 01/07/15 *bf the consumer stated the issues are on recall. updated 01/17/15
Abs system activated under normal breaking conditions, caused extended breaking distance. has happened 13 times since the initial failure. dealer unable to replicate but scanned for codes and found c1185 which they said was failure of the abs controller/computer. they suggested $1200 in repairs but couldn't guarantee it would "fix the problem". have multiple abs fault codes all the time now. c1198, c1194,c1254, c1246, c1250, c1242 ,c1214, c1210, c1446 which all point to multiple failures in the computer. searching the internet it appears on http://www.fordwindstarrecall.info/ that a recall for this issue may be in the works as of 5/2014. *tr
Abs light and brake light have been on for months off and on. have a slight brake fluid leak. was backing into my driveway and the o/d light came on and started flashing, the odometer went blank, speedometer stopped working and the a/c began blowing hot air. checked fuse #10 and found it was blown. replaced fuse #10. odometer and speedometer work but other lights still on. have an appointment to have the van looked at tomorrow. *tr
My abs light & traction light are now on. also, needles jump on dash {odometer, speedometer, fuel & heat level} and cruise control does not work any longer {this has been happening since receiving my van back from the ford garage after 7 months from the axle recall repair over a year ago}. tried to bleed my brakes after replacing pads and caliper but cannot bleed front left or rear right. was told by a ford mechanic that this may be a problem in the abs module. as pertaining to a ford recall in october, 2009, all of the above problems may be connected to this recall. my van was inspected and nothing was done to it because, at the time, because it was deemed safe. i have since replaced the electrical tape on the wiring harness that they were suppose to be inspecting because it was falling off due to brake fluid on it (reason for said recall}. i plan on calling the garage in the am to have them reinspect my van for this recall because i cannot afford to replace any more parts in it. i have put a lot into it just since getting it back after the axle recall because it deteriorated sitting in their driveway for the winter due to salt. i hope nobody else is going through this. i love my van and have owned it for 11 years but it is getting too expensive for a one-income-household to repair due to bad parts or service. please have ford work to fix these problems so i can afford to keep my van. thank you! *tr
Abs light start flashing, lose cruise control, then over drive started flashing on the van, cut off o/d light still flashing. *tr
Abs and brake warning lights light up randomly and cruise control stops working. main brakes still function. i see lots of similar complaints online. had brakes repaired twice and the mechanic always mentions a loss of brake fluid. even after that, the problem persists. i do not believe my vin was ever part of the scds switch recall but i am suspicious this may be somehow related (?). if so, there could be risk of a fire and i do not feel safe. i'd like some answers before i spend any more money at local mechanic fixing this car. calling ford dealer tomorrow to see if there is anything they can do. *tr
Brought in van for recalls 09s09, 10s13 and 11s16. this was for the subframe issues and speed control switch. speed control switch was supposed to address leaking brake fluid. brake fluid still leaking and now dealership is charging me for brake switch repair and bleeding of brakes. also abs light came on after service and now dealership says abs sensor needs to be replaced. i believe these are all related to original recall but dealership says no. *tr
my abs light is on and will not go off and speedometer wouldn't work properly when the weather was really warm, and just september 21st 2012 my car was not able to switch out of park, and on oct.18th 2012 my brake light stop working all together. i have research this problem and there is a recall out on ford windstar 1998-2003 with the same problems. but when i called ford 10/22/12 they check my vin and stated that there was not a recall on my car only ford windstar van with parts made in virginia. i don't understand why my car cant be repair at ford expense when there is evidence that there i s a problem with the car. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. the contact stated that the brakes began to fail when attempting to brake. the vehicle had a sudden increase of speed before decelerating and stopping. the dealer advised the contact that the vehicle was previously repaired under nhtsa campaign id number: 09v399000 (vehicle speed control) on november 27, 2009 and provided no additional assistance. the manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. the current mileage and failure mileage was 108,000.
Traction control light comes on, abs light comes on, brake light comes on.
Purchased this vehicle in january 2012 and have had nothing but problems with it. according to ford all recalls have been done on this vehicle but here is a list of the issues with the van: abs light comes on, check engine light comes on, van has no cruise control at all, and last friday i could not put the van in gear. after the ford dealership "repaired" the solenoid for the van now all of a sudden there is currently no rear brake lights. this van is less than safe to be on the road and have seen that some of the recalls would have solved the speed control issue but the ford factory will not answer any of my questions. take a look online and you will see thousands of people with the same issues we are having and it was brought to the attention of ford that we are having the same issues as thousands of other people so this is beyond a problematic vehicle.the vehicle is currently sitting at the local ford dealer while they try and figure out what is wrong with the light system. this vehicle has been in the shop twice since we have owned it and this is costing us hundreds (so far) to fix issues that everyone with this vehicle is having. the latest issues have led to us being without a vehicle for almost a week and we have a disabled child in the home and this is unacceptable. *tr
I have purchased a 2002 windstar in april 2012, we noticed the abs light and brake light would appear and we'd be low on brake fluid. we replaced the master brake cylinder but they said the sensor on bottom was unavailable to order, we called ford and they told us the same thing. the sensor is full of brake fluid. we have to fill our brake fluid about once every 2 weeks in warm weather more often. when i took it into dealership for recall on axle i asked about this they said theres no recalls for it. i can not afford to purchase a new vehicle nor would i want to sell this vehicle to another person as it was sold to me without being told of problem. is there going to be a recall on this? *tr
The abs and red brake light as well as the traction control light, and now my battery light come on and off intermittently. the abs system kicks in at unnecessary times making it difficult to stop. the speedometer is now also bouncing up and down intermittently, but no other gauges seem to be affected. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. the contact stated that the abs warning light would illuminate sporadically. the fuse wiring harness was repaired under nhtsa campaign id number: 09v399000 (vehicle speed control), but the manufacturer and dealer refused to inspect or repair the abs control module, which was also referenced in the recall. the vehicle was not further repaired. the approximate failure and current mileage was 130,000. the vin was unavailable.
The vehicle was checked by ford dealer in alamogordo, nm 88310 due to a recall for "rear axle cracks, subframe corrosion" and "brake, abs brake, cruise control, and speedometer/odometer electrical problems" on aug/16/2011. they sad there is no problem / or they fixed it. after that date, the brake/abs brake illuminated a couple of times, but went of after the engine was turned off/on again. also the cruisecontrol stopped working since and isn't currently not working. i found that the "brake pressure differential deactivation switch (scds) (2b264) located under the master cylinder (behind the air filter) is leaking!!!. it is completely wet and the fluid is dropping down slowly. pictures are available, taken today 04/04/2012. *tr
The speed control would not shut off with (off button) located on steering wheel, only with brake pedal. the brakes seemed not to stop the vehicle as quickly as other times., and on came the lights (abs & brake light) now the lights (brake and abs come on everytime i drive the vehicle shortly after starting down the road. *tr
Abs, and service brake, come on simultaneously. i am afraid that stopping distance shall be increased, thusly causing personal & property damage liability. fear of braking distance suddenly increased, when driving, on a personal daily basis. Tl* the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. the contact stated while driving 35 mph the brake light began to illuminate on the instrument panel. the contact added brake fluid and after restarting the vehicle all of the warning lights on the instrument panel began to illuminate. a certified mechanic from an authorized dealer examined the vehicle and informed that contact that fluid was leaking from the vehicle speed sensor and spilling onto the wiring harness. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, where it was repaired under the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 09v399000 (vehicle speed control). the dealer refused to repair the failure associated with the wiring harness and gauges on the instrument panel, which were caused by the speed sensor leak. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but offered no assistance. the failure mileage was 137,000.
The abs and brake warning lights go on randomly for no reason, also cruise control will stop working. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. the contact stated that the abs, brake and air bag warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle was repaired under nhtsa campaign id number: 09v399000 (vehicle speed control) but the failure recurred. neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was contacted in regards to the most recent failure. the failure and current mileage was 154,000.
1st incident happened while driving at highway speeds. abs and brake light illuminated until car was turned off. lights now come on randomly. i took my vehicle to a ford dealership on aug. 31 2002 for recall on front and rear axles. they installed shackles on suspension and said that everything was fine. after i came home with vehicle, i noticed a clunking sound coming from the r/f wheel area and my overdrive off dash light starts flashing randomly until car is turned off. concerning the abs issue, i took my vehicle to an independent garage and they told me i needed to replace the abs control module, then he told me that they did the exact same repair on another 02' windstar earlier that week and the repair would cost $700-$800 dollars. coincidence???? *tr
We had our ford windstar brakes done all the way around and my abs and emergency brake light and traction light come on and off. the cruise control works sometimes. ford dealer in my town wont check it out without a diagnostic fee even thou a recall is said to be issued for the same complaints. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. the contact stated as the vehicle was started all of the warning lights began to illuminate, including the abs switch light. the engine also began to function rough and brake fluid was leaking. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated they had to repair the electric switch on the bottom of the reservoir at the owners expense. the failure is the same as recall 09v399000 (vehicle speed control). the failure mileage was 190,000.
Have had intermittent issues with abs light and now told that i need a new speed control deactivation switch. *tr
Cruise control switch recently replaced brake fluid was leaking may have faulty switch or master cylinder damaged during installation causing fluid leak that is highly flammable causing fire or smoke from 2002 windstar master cylinder and brake booster were faulty. *tr
Abs light, trac active light, alternator, check traction control light. *tr
Braking distance suddenly increased. abs/ brake light remain on. speedometer not working properly (inaccurate reading). *js
Brake light (red) speedometer and odometer stop working cruise control will not activate or deactivates without warning abs brake light (yellow) ford trouble code c1185 problem codes p0171, p0174, p0401 171,174,401, egr or system too lean issue. *kb
Abs and brake lights keep coming on. cruise control not working. speedometer, odometer and airconditioning have also stopped working. due to short in the cruise control disable switch aka brake pressure differential deactivation switch located under the master cylinder caused from brake fluid leaking onto it. this in turn blew the #10 fuse. this switch is covered with brake fluid and could start a fire at any time. i have stopped driving it until i can replace the switch and clean off the brake fluid. *tr
Red (brake) light and yellow (abs) light illuminate on instrument panel while driving. in this condition, the abs does not work and hard braking results in rear wheels locking up even on dry road and partial loss of vehicle control. my mechanic says the abs module is going bad and it is a common problem with windstars. this vehicle was supposedly repaired in the 2009 cds recall. so far, lights come on about every 300 miles and are cleared (go off) once the vehicle is switched off and restarted. i think ford should replace the abs modules that are failing. also, prior to the 2009 recall, the cruise control resume function stopped working and is still out. i understand that may well be a symptom related to the leaking of brake fluid from the cds. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. the contact was driving 30-35 mph when he observed a cloud of smoking emitting from under the hood. the dashboard lights were also illuminated. the vehicle was shut off and when restarted, the vehicle was taken to a local repair facility. the mechanic discovered there had been a small fire under the hood and the control switch was disabled. in addition, the mechanic advised the contact of a potential recall on the vehicle under nhtsa campaign id number: 09v399000 (vehicle speed control) and referred him to an authorized dealer. the dealer replaced the fused wiring harness under the recall and also found that the instrument panel was damaged. there were separate damages as a result of the fire and the manufacturer advised they would not cover the repair expenses of the other components. the separate damages were not repaired. the failure and current mileage was approximately 68,000.
While driving on a highway with cruise control engaged, the brake and abs lights came on. the brakes were unaffected. we stopped and checked on finding a mechanic in the town we were going through, but when we re-started the van, the lights were back off. the brakes remained unaffected. the problem recurs sporadically at intervals of a few weeks to a few months. sometime later, we had to have the cruise control repaired due to two bad switches (damaged by leaks). i mention this because evidence suggests a link between the cruise control and the abs problems. *tr
Re; recall 09s09, ford dealer carry out this recall on ford windstar 2002, change the deactivation switch and wire harness. however ,when start the engine the abs & brake light goes off as normal, after driving on the highway for a while,i will say when things got heated/hot these two lights comes on back,( abs & brake light) if i stop and started the engine up ,these two light goes out, after driving for a few miles again the abs& brake light comes on back ,and on and on like this. this is causing my breaking distance to suddenly increase. this matter need urgent attention so the problem can be corrected by ford or further recall is needed. ( e.g electronic control module problem) etc. thank you. *tr
I was driving on the highway and my abs light came and i noticed the cruise control also didn't work any more . i took it to the ford dealer and they did the recall for the leaky scds switch this fixed the cruise problem but the abs no longer works on my windstar. *tr
Abs and brake lights coming on for no apparent reason. had recall service on cruise control and the warning lights for the abs and brake lights have been coming on intermittently since that service was done. talked with the local ford service department and they are aware of this problem. said that the previous recall on the cruise control didn't have anything to do with my warning lights for abs and brakes (but they have had more issues with this problem than the cruise control recall). if i remember the correctly, the cruise control recall - it had something to do with brake fluid contact and potential for fire, my cruise was shorted out and not working - must have been from brake fluid. i am thinking that this flaw has something to do with electrical components connected from the brake and abs system to the warning lights being shorted out in a similar way; it is just a guess, i am sure that the real mechanics know what is going on.... this is a safety issue and ford needs to recall this design flaw; the warning device is not working as designed. i am sure that the $1,600 to fix the problem is an issue for ford. sometimes the lights turn on when i start the vehicle, sometimes i may be driving and they will turn on, at times the warning lights do not come on at all. the brakes are not effected from what i can tell and my fluid levels are normal. i hope that my brakes don't really experience a problem.
Red brake light and yellow abs light came on while driving. it suddenly decreased in its braking power and resulted in a minor bumper to bumper crash at a traffic light. luckily no major damage was done and no one was injured, only small stretch marks on my front bumper. the other persons car was ok and we went on straight back home shaken and afraid the whole ride back. this vehicle has already had the company friendly (not consumer friendly) recall nhtsa campaign id number: 09v399000. this seems to have made the problem worse though. the dealer says it is a common problem with the windstars and there is no recall for the abs system and could cause braking distance to decrease and advised me to have it repaired immediately as it is a safety hazard!!!! the government and odi got right up on toyotas for not being able to stop and not fords!! this must be recalled and fixed immediately! *tr
Sudden increase in braking distance. this happens intermittently but always seems to happen when abs, traction control, and brake light come on. occasional slight smell of burning usually on hotter days. longer braking distance has almost cause me to rear-end a car and/or stop for a pedestrian in a cross-walk. only because i always leave plenty of distance away from cars in front of me and watch closely for pedestrians has an accident been avoided. i have not had the problem repaired because our ford dealership told me it would cost $800 just for abs electronic control unit and 8 hours(@$125/hr) to install the new unit. also, i was told a new speed control unit would need to be replaced. i am simply not in a financial decision to get these items fix. i am concerned that these issues may result in an accident or a fire or both. *tr
I took my 2002 ford windstar van to bob bell ford in glen burnie, md in may 2010 for the recall #09s09. i had been experiencing abs, brake and trac control lights coming on and staying on thru duration of ride. they supposedly repaired the part (recall 09s09). on july 16, 2010 i was driving when all of the sudden the same lights, abs, brake and trac. control came on my dash board. i arrived at my destination and parked van. later i had an appointment to go to when i got in van, no warning light were on the dash board. as i drove probably 3 blocks all of the sudden the brake fluid low light came on. i drove another block and parked the van. i went inside and when i came out there was brake fluid all over the ground that had leaked out of the van. i got the van to my local auto repair shop and was told that he thought the master brake cylinder was leaking, so i had it replaced (not knowing that this was related to the recall #09s09). when i got the van back, i drove it not 4 blocks and then all of the sudden the same three lights came on, abs, brake and trac control. the same lights that would come on all of the time before i took the van into ford for the recall repair. i contacted bob bell ford of glen burnie, md and told them that i was having the same problems that i had before i had brought the van in for the recall repair, with the lights coming on and i was told that the recall had nothing to do with abs, brake or trac control lights coming on, but that i could bring it in, but that this problem did not sound light anything related to the recall 09s09, now i know that this is not true, and i will be taking the van back to bob bell ford tomorrow, but i am definitely still have problems with the vehicle. *tr
We have a 2002 ford windstar. we were at the dealership today for an oil change, new fuel filter and tires rotated. our van was one that was recalled for the cruise control. we took it in when were notified and about 2 weeks after the recall our cruise control stopped working. last fri. our abs light came on and then it suddenly went out. we had to have a new axle put on our van in may,2010 due to the axle cracked. we thought maybe the light came on because of having new brakes put on when we installed the new axle. we had the ford mechanic check this out and he told us that the abs is leaking, but this has nothing to do with the cruise control. if this is leaking and the cruise control won't work because of it leaking isn't related to the recall? *tr
2002 ford windstar. consumer expresses discontent about recall repair *tgw the consumer state he received a recall regarding the cruise control deactivation switch. the consumer stated the cruise control worked fine up until the vehicle was taken to the dealer to have the recall done. the cruise control worked for about two weeks and then stopped working. when the consumer returned to the dealer he was informed that the abs was leaking which caused the cruise control to stop working. the abs light did illuminate, but then it went off. also, back in may, while driving 30 mph, the vehicle began to fishtail. when the consumer arrived home and inspected the vehicle, he discovered the rear axle had cracked. the consumer removed the axle and discovered it was hollow and had rusted from the inside out. *jb
