Problems with 2002 Ford Windstar SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRIC

On average, the 2002 Ford Windstar starts to “feel” problems with the SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRIC and its various aspects after 98 238 miles.

Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRIC problems on 2002 Ford Windstar

The abs and brake light keep turning on and off. this happens as soon as the car has heated up . it is not on when i first start the car it only comes on after i have drive the car for a while. this problem has progressively gotten worse. when i talked to the ford dealership, they acted as if they had never heard of any problems with the windstars abs ecm system. this seems to me to be a major safety hazard. i thought the abs breaking system was an important system on cars! doing some research i have found that it is due a defective part and ford wants to brush it under the rug. now i know why the dealer acted as if he had never heard of the problem before. this seems to be a problem that many windstars are having and they want to ignore it. their seems to be no concern for safety here. i only found out about this problem by going on the internet and asking what was wrong with my van. i hope ford admits to this problem and addresses it so no lives are lost due to poor brake performance! *tr

2002 ford windstar - having issues with emergency brake light on, abs light on and traction control light on. have done some research and this is a very common problem that has not been recalled. braking distance is greatly increased. abs system does not function. *tr

Brake and abs lights turn on at same time without an apparent cause, this happens after driving van 5 or less minutes at a low speed. once the engine is turned off and restarted again, both lights remain off, and again, after driving the van for a short distance brake and abs lights come on again. i already replace brake pads as well as refilled brake liquid deposit without fixing the problem. my big concern is that my wife uses this van to take and pick up my 4 kids at school. *tr

I have a 2002 ford windstar. about 2 months ago the brake light, abs light, and the traction control light came on the dashboard, as well as the speedometer and digital odometer quit working. i took it to a local ford dealer to have it looked at, and they told me that the abs module went bad and would need replaced. they quoted me $1006.17 + tax to fix it! it is my understanding that this year windstar has a recurring problem with this module, and i would like to know if any work is being done on a recall? *tr

I have had abs and brake light problems for about a year now. i take it to the ford garage they have said there is nothing wrong and reset the system. so far i haven't had an accident, i was told my brakes are good. but i still have these lights coming on almost everyday now. *tr

I was driving on the highway and my abs light came and i noticed the cruise control also didn't work any more . i took it to the ford dealer and they did the recall for the leaky scds switch this fixed the cruise problem but the abs no longer works on my windstar. *tr

Ford windstar 2002 abs brake light turns on and off for no reason. *tr

Braking distance suddenly increased due to abs and brake light on all the time. i took windstar sport 2002 in for a safety recall in dec 2009. they said that they fixed it and for the past 8 months these two lights keep turning on and off about 3 times a week. now for the last month, the light have been on constantly. i am concerned for vehicle setting on fire at any time due to this last recall and now a new recall of rear axle corrosion. i have a disabled 5 year old and i am very concerned. i would like these items fixed properly. obviously, the last recall was not. the thought of my van setting on fire with my child in it did not occur to the mechanic maybe. i learned of the last recall not being fixed properly by investigating this new recall. i honestly couldn't figure out why my lights were staying on and ford said that i needed an oil change maybe. i just had one done at the beginning of the month so that is not the case. i did own a 1996 windstar that burst into flames in 2005 february way before the recall came out in 2009. i have told them 3 times that it has already set on fire and there is no van left but they keep sending me notices for it. i would like my current vehicle fixed right the first time. it is a safety hazard especially since it would take longer to pull my child out of vehicle if it set on fire spontaneously while in it. i use my vehicle daily to transport my child to different therapies. *tr

On our 2002 windstar van, every now and then it takes longer distance for brakes to work properly, especially if it is raining. under the recall campaign, some time ago, wire harness/fuse link was replaced by a ford dealer. we seems to have the same problem of abs and brake lights come on and go intermittently. we had the brakes checked, and everything seems to be ok. brakes taking longer distance to apply and it is very unpredictable, scary and to get used to it. i do not know what to do? *tr

Braking distance suddenly increased. *tr

Failure of abs electronic control unit. first noticed as abs dashboard light would come on intermittently since june 2010. when checked out by the (non-ford) shop that does all the work, they certified that the brakes were fine, but the abs ecu was producing multiple and apparently random error codes. after about a month this became an almost daily occurrence; took vehicle to ford who reported the ecu had failed completely (non-operative) and i would need to replace it. ford mechanic said this was not uncommon on these windstars. i did so at a cost of $1,200.00. *tr

The abs light and brake light are coming on intermittently. i have topped off brake fluid, but that does not work. the mechanic said abs failure on this vehicle is more common than not. *tr

Ford performed safety recall 09s09 in 2009 but only installed safety wiring harness 2002. requested ford to replace both speed control deactivation switch and abs module due to the known failures included in the investigation, but ford refused after a year the abs and brake warning lights started to come on intermittently, now the warning lights come on everytime the car is driven after several miles. based on research (http://www.2carpros.com/questions/ford-windstar-2003-ford-windstar-abs-c1185-trouble-code), i can see that this is very common problem with this vehicle and the problem and it causes braking safety issues in addition to fire problem. the replacement of the speed control deactivation switch and abs control module replacement should be required as part of 09s09 recall. the installation of the wiring harness only minimizes the occurrence of possible fire, but does not address the main cause of the problems of the defective deactivation switch and abs module. *tr *kb

Parking brake light, traction light and abs light come on after driving a short distance. the dealer tells me that this is the abs module going bad. the lights come on intermittently in no random order. when i switch on and off the lights go away. the dealer is quoting me $1300 to fix this, saying that this is not life threatening and just that the abs function may not function in case of a requirement. this is a huge issue for me as is a safety issue and typically the van is driven by my wife with kids in the car. ford says this is not part of their ford windstar safety recall and they will not cover this. however reading on the internet i see that this is a common problem with this model of windstar, lots of people complained and having similar issues. i have also found a recall of abs that is very similar and including the two links for your reference. i hope you can get ford to take a look at this and get them to fix this. i do not feel safe driving this vehicle any more leave aside putting kids in the car. http://www.aboutautomobile.com/complaint/2003/ford/windstar/electrical+system http://fordwindstarrecall.info/ . *tr

The abs light on my 2002 ford windstar and the brake light is staying on. i changed the brakes and i'm still having problems. three times i was driving and when i went to stop the brakes locked up on me and i couldn't stop. *tr

Abs/e-brakewarning led's come on when van warms up. abs quit working while driving on freeway on wet roads. nearly crashed into side rail. when i got home checked my brake fluid and found it empty. filled the fluid and took car to mechanic the next day. mechanic said i had leaked fluid all over, but the master cyl. looked to be fine. found info on line and soon after got a recall notice from ford. took van to ford dealer who installed the fusible link, per the recall notice in november. my abs and e-brake lights are back on as of about march, 2010. they come on most often after the van has warmed up, or if the temp outside is warmer. at the same time that these warning dash lights came back on i lost brake lights all together, no tail lights, no reverse lamps, no rear turn signals, no dome lights, cc works sometimes and others does not, and the auto locks often do not work to lock or unlock the van. my brake lights would often stay on after turning the van off and removing the key, and now they don't turn on at all. my battery would die and have huge amounts of corrosion on the neg. lead of the battery. replaced battery and the ground chasis lead and the ground battery terminal. i have yet another appointment with the ford dealer this week. this has been ongoing now for 8 months. if my van catches fire, my door locks will not unlock in the rear how will i get my children out quickly and safely? this is dangerous! *tr

2002 ford windstar abs light is on and braking distance suddenly increased. *tr

Abs light is on constantly and took to dealer mechanic and mechanic documented that " abs light on and abs activation when braking on normal road- work performed- scan for codes and found multiple codes related to module. must bring to ford dealer for repair. module software has to be downloaded and reprogrammed by ford dealer. -11/13/2009. brakes/rotor/disc have been replaced in 11/13/2009 and still abs light on and brake light also. today, it is difficult to brake. am hoping ford will recall the abs module. *tr

1. city driving, frequent stops, and warm weather. 2. abs and brake warning lights come on. abs is intermittent at best. sometimes loss of braking. 3. stopped driving vehicle. wait for ecm/abs module to cool down. 4. i am not an engineer, but it doesn't make sense to me to have a heat sink on the other side of a critical component's (abs) electronic board. it appears that the heat sink is expanding electronic board for the ecm/abs during frequent braking and more often in warmer months. it is just a matter of time until the ecm/abs electronic board breaks, causing braking failure and leading to...? the vehicle is a 2002 ford windstar lx. it has had the most recent recall work completed at a ford dealership. i mentioned the problem to the dealership and they did not seem to be too worried that a critical component may fail over time. *tr

2002 ford windstar abs and brake lamp turn on intermittently. both lights illuminate during some drive cycles, lights will remain on during the entire ignition cycle. frequency of occurrence is once or twice per week dealership states that the abs control module needs to be replaced - - - approximately $800 repair bill , however dealer states that if the hydraulic unit mounting bolts break during removal to gain access to the abs unit then repair bill will be $1500. after receiving the repair estimate, the dealership informed me that they would have to order the parts. they stated that they could probably get the abs unit within 1-2 days but if the hydraulic unit needed to be replaced due to stripped or broken mounting bolts then they could not say when they could get the replacement part since it was listed on their system as "on major back order". in other words, if they break the hcu bolts my vehicle could be disabled indefinitely until repair parts were off back order. so as a consumer i'm faced with the choice of driving an unsafe vehicle or potentially having a disabled vehicle for several weeks or months - - - neither of these choices are acceptable. research on the web shows that this is a common problem with these units. obviously, failure of the abs unit raises a safety concern due to the increased risk of a serious accident. ford motor company is well aware of this issue but chooses to charge their customers $1000+ repair bills instead of addressing the safety issue of defective abs units. *tr

Abs lights/brake lights come on intermittently and stay on. doesn't matter what speed i am going. i had the scds recall done but they said the abs was ok. i drove down the road and the lights came back on again. i've had 3 mechanics tell me they fixed it and they never did. ford fix the abs module!!! *tr

Abs and brake lights remain on and brakes "grinding" even after replaced? *tr

Abs light comes on. had mechanic check and cannot find anything. if i shut the engine off and on again light goes off. computer shows the following errors:c1185 c1198 c1194 c1254 c1240 c1250 c1242 c1214 c1210 c1446. *tr

Abs light and brake light comes on intermittently and does not clear until the car is restarted. *tr

June 2009-brakes failed/indicator light stayed on--took to midas and found the master cylinder was leaking. replaced master cylinder. sept 15th, 2009--brake indicator light came on. brake pedal was spongy and the cruise control would not work correctly. if i tried to use the cruise control, it would disengage without me touching the brakes, then it would return to speed without me resetting. returned the car to midas and they found the brake pressure differential switch was shorted out. it was covered in brake fluid. *tr

I have a 2002 ford windstar, i went to park on labor day this year and parked my van. a few hours later, i went to van and tried to use my remote to get in and it would not work. once i got directly on the van i smelled an odor that smelt like burnt rubber that was really strong. i got in van with my key and started the van. it was very hot that day so i went to roll down the power windows and they didn't work. i then went to turn on the air conditioning and it didn't work. i then looked at my dash and realized i had loss all power; nothing was work, odometer, temperature gauge, radio, headlights etc. i thought i just blew a fuse and stayed at the park. when i went home several hours later i still smelled odor but told my husband i would go to shop in morning before work to have my mechanic look at it. that morning i went to shop and they said it was not a fuse and after several hours of them doing visual and computer diagnostics they found that the abs system caught fire and started burning into my gas line. they said we were very lucky van didn't total catch on fire. they ended replacing the whole abs unit under the van and had to replace all wires that had burnt and rewire everything. repair is almost 900.00 dollars. they van gave no warnings that something like this would happen. i feel very scarred to continue driving this van, even with repair being done because i feel like it can happen again and next time we may not be so lucky. i am still paying on the van and stuck. i hope ford does something before someone loses their life. i have not picked up van yet and am considering telling car dealer to pick it up at shop and taking repo on my credit. *tr

Brake warning light and abs warning light illuminate for no apparent reason. *tr

The abs and brake lights come on my dashboard intermittently on my 2002 ford windstar. i have no trouble w/ my brakes, yet this continues to happen. i have changed the deactivation switch under the master cylinder twice, but this keeps recurring. ford should have a recall on this problem. *tr

In september 2009 the mechanic at the dealer where i bought my windstar told me the abs module is bad and that i need a new one and have to go to the ford dealer directly and pay around $800.00 and have it reset by their computer. this has cost me lots of money because i already spent $600.00 on rear brakes because of not knowing this is a common problem with ford windstar.also, immediately after purchasing this vehicle in 2007, the locks on the van don't work. sometimes it locks by remote and sometimes the locks all work, but, the driver side. this is a pain. now, i have a problem with the 'check engine' light coming on and i have had various mechanics try to reset the light and it will come back on again and again! i have spent hundreds on this van to have it in shape, but always something arises. despite the cruise control recall, i have not had any problem with it and use it all the time, but will have to have it done. i wish ford to fix all the problems this type of van has and so i won't have to spend hundreds, again, or i will have to get rid of it, which is a shame because i really love the tv, even though the screen give me problems and the vcr no longer works. *tr

Abs and brake light indication on dash board. brake fluid found on wires at ecm. repair not completed by ford dealer as part of windstar vehicle speed control recall ' id# 19544. failure of ecm is direct result of problem associated with this recall. *tr

Failure of the abs module on my 2002 ford windstar van. *tr

2002 ford windstar brake warning light on dashboard and abs warning lights illuminate after car has warmed up. mechanics have checked brakes themselves and found no mechanical reason for these lights. also have evidence of leak in area of electric switch related to this system. *tr

I own a 2002 ford windstar sel. recently had two messages of low brake fluid. abs brake warning lights also come on and off on instrument panel. cruise control stops working from time to time. then on aug 4, the entire instrument panel went haywire, and air conditioner stopped cooling. having it looked at tomorrow, but this sounds like leaking brake fluid from bad switch has caused electrical meltdown. no fire - yet. *tr

2002 ford windstar abs light brake light on,traction control shut off. *tr

2002 ford windstar brake pressure deactivation switch leakage into wiring caused short in wiring abs light, brake light o/d light o. lost speedometer and odometer. *tr

Recently purchased 2002 ford windstar mini van. upon research found that the prevalent problems with this model could result in brake damage, fire, and loss of vehicle. took vehicle in for brake diagnostic test and found that it has the same issue as many others of this model. quoted $2100.00 repairs. why is ford not recalling these vans? *tr

Ford / windstar abs & brake lights come on when outside temperatures are warm. the ford dealership tells me the abs module is defective and needs to be replaced at a cost of around $600.00 for part and labor. thousands of windstar owners are having this same problem! i had the cruise deactivation switch replace and the new harness installed. however the abs & brake lights are still on because the abs module is defective. please have ford do a recall to have the abs module replaced for all of us owners who are driving the car without the abs function working properly!!!!!! *tr

2002 ford windstar keeps displaying check abs or check traction control on the message center. then the abs or trac light turns on the dash. after car is restarted the messages go away. will happen every once in a while. my mechanic just told me there is a faulty abs control module and sensor. i cannot afford to replace that. i read reports that this is a problem with the windstar and a fire can result. my wife drives my 3 kids around in this vehicle. *tr

The brake relay switch melted and leaked. i had to replace that part. the abs & brake light continuously come on and stay light up. in order for me to repair this i would have to pay $250 out of pocket. the brakes squeal even after being replaced. *tr

2002 ford windstar. abs brake system warning lights on/off regularly. heavy loss of brake fluid. *tr

We own a ford windstar 2002 van. the following are occurring: lost brake fluid, brake light, speedometer and odometer stopped working, abs brake light, check engine light, cruise control will not activate and this is caused by leak in the brake pressure differential deactivation switch. the lights on the dashboard are permanent and i will need to take van in to the ford dealer for repairs. since this is a serious and dangerous matter caused by a defective part, we hope that they will recall this part and cover the costs for the parts and labor. we are disappointed with ford. *tr

Abs and brake dash lights are coming on staying on after a few minutes down the road. they will remain on until you shut the vehicle off. *tr

We are having trouble with our 2002 windstar van...the brake lights , abs lights, and trac lights are coming on all of the time plus the od light, too!!! our mechanic says that brake fluid has dripped onto the abs module, and that this could cause a fire!!! if you have so many complaints why don't you do something about it???are you going to replace the parts???? *tr

My wife was driving our 2002 ford windstar and noticed smoke coming from under the hood and it smelled electrical. my 19 year old son noticed the smoke coming from the wires under the master cylinder. they called me and i suggested removing the wires from the brake pressure switch. he did but they were extremely hot. i did some online research to find a problem with windstar pressure switches and wiring catching fire. i am glad a fire didn't start, but it could have. i would like to see ford include 2002 windstars in their recall. *tr

Normal driving of van and both brake and abs light came on, then the speedometer and odometer went out, took it to get repaired, repair shop said that the master cyd., cruise control sensor and p-tail needed to be replaced and that fluid was leaking everywhere! ! old parts kept! ! *tr

I have a 2002 ford windstar van, while driving, the van the abs light, traction control light and the emergency brake light all come on at the same time. they remain on until i park the van. if i turn the van back on the lights are off, but once i begin driving again all three warning lights come on. i have had the van. i have read that there is a serious problem with this happening in ford windstar vans and it has resulted in fires. i am terrified to drive the van now, and would like to know when there will be a recall. this has been going on with my van, especially since the weather has gotten warmer. *tr

I have reported this before, but the problem went away this past winter and has now returned when the outside temperature started to rise. intermittently both the brake light and abs light on my 2002 ford windstar will come on while i'm driving. if i shut the van off and then turn it back on the problems goes away, sometimes for that day, sometimes for a week or more. i have taken it to the ford dealership multiple times but they could never find the problem and its no longer covered by warranty, so i've gotten tired of taking it to them and have them tell me that they can't find the problem. *tr

The abs staying on. *tr

My 2002 ford windstar lx instrument cluster has illuminated both the red brakelight and yellow abs lights. this is consistent with nhtsa investigation ea08021. no sign of brake fluid below brake fluid reservoir. lights come on and off. seems to be linked with exterior temperature - on days that are warm, the lights illuminate. on days that are cold, they are less likely to be illuminated.*tr

My abs lites & brake lights are always coming on . *tr
