We have classified the 99 complaints from 2001 Ford Windstar about VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL into the following categories.
Takata recall. my van will not shift out of 1 gear. only can reach maximum of 20 miles per hour.
The needles on the temperature gauge, rpm gauge and gas gauge started to move up and down in a crazy manner. after a while, it stopped, but it comes back occasionally. also, the abs and brake light will come on at times. i had the brakes looked at and nothing appears to be wrong. *tr
Abs, traction control, cruise control and speedometer either are intermittent or not working at all. this causes issues with braking, vehicle control, driver attentiveness and other safety related issues. *tr
I didn't have a crash i noticed that my abs brake and tire pressure light was staying on and a short time after i started hearing a loud rumbling noise in the front end every time i slow an it's impossible to make sudden stops and at times my speedometer starts flickering back and forth as well as my cruise control is currently inoperable. i have limited driving this vehicle in which i purchased due to feeling it is not in a safe manner for my children to be in. i have had several shops as well as individuals that told me these areas are common to go out on this specific vehicle and that there is possible recall. i just want to be able to drive my van with out worrying if i'm going to be able to come to a stop when needed as well as not knowing if i could possible break down or something break in the front end while i am driving at somewhat high speeds. thank you and hope to hear from someone soon in regards to this situation! *tr
Ecu module for abs is shorted out and causes gauge cluster to short out. this causes abs light & brake light to turn on and all gauges stop working and they jump around . this was diagnosed by ford dealership in wi. said brake fluid leaks in to ecu and shorts out wires . told me . $2000.00 to fix . these problems are a safety issue . abs and speedometer and gauges don't work . should be a recall . *tr
While sitting at the red light my brake light, abs light, over drive lights all came on and then my speedometer would not register when i started to go when the light turned green. *tr
I was driving down the interstate going to a local fast food when i loss all acceleration the car was slowing down even though i was giving it gas. knowing i was slowing down i turned my hazard lights on and coasted to the shoulder lane the car was still running so i turned the car on and off. i still had no acceleration the car wouldn't go into any gear or reverse i had know choice but to tow it home.i looked around on the internet to find out what the problem is it seems that this is all to common with ford windstars. just looking for a solution to what seems to be a problem even if you go down the list of possible replacements just needing help with a solution. i didn't have the usual indicators that you would have when something goes wrong my engine light didn't come on at all which is weird. *tr
The same part indicated in recall is bad, my van needs fix. the recall doesn't cover my part or repair because my vin isn't showing any recalls. when the same problem happened to me indicated in the recall. is there anything i can do? *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2001 ford windstar. the contact stated that brake fluid was leaking onto the wiring harness and caused a shortage with the vehicle speed control, instrument cluster and the radio. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign id number: 09v399000 (vehicle speed control), which the dealer installed a connector to the brake pressure switch but the repair did not correct the failure. the dealer did not include the fused wiring harness in line with the scds. the contact stated that after the vehicle was taken to his home, he installed a number 10 fuse however, the connector was still faulty and caused smoke to emit from the wiring harness. the dealer was notified of the failure and offered no assistance. the manufacturer was also notified, who advised that they had performed the required recall repair but could provide no further assistance. the failure mileage was 103,153.
After repairing my speed controller my abs and brake lights have been coming on the dashboard intermittently and are coming on more and more. took it to the dealer and no codes show up,but i do not trust it . *tr
My abs light and brake light and tractoin controll lights are all on at all times nowand my speed domitor has slowly gone out on my 2001 windstar sel the date below is an aprox
I took my van in for the 11s16 recall and now problems are taking place afterwards. i got my van back and now the check engine light is on and coolant is leaking everywhere. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2001 ford windstar. while driving 55 mph with the cruise control activated and attempting to make a turn, the vehicle proceeded to drive forward without warning. the vehicle caught fire and a fire report was filed. the fire department extinguished the fire. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 100,000.
Abs light, air bag light and brake light keeps coming back on while car is on. *tr
The parking brake and abs warning lights come on intermittently and tend to stay on when the vehicle is warm. this vehicle has already had the recall 09v399000 performed on it so the lights coming on should not be related to that issue. it appears to be the same problem that many other people are experiencing with their windstar vans which is a bad solder on the abs control module circuit board. i have only driven the van a few thousand miles since the lights started coming on so i have not noticed any loss of function that other people have experienced. *tr
Abs light comes on intermittently, even in summer with no adverse driving conditions. it stays on for varying lengths of time, then disappears for some time, then out of the blue comes back on. braking a little bit harder than usual does seem to trigger it. also, recently, the cruise control just suddenly stopped working. it worked fine one day, then all of a sudden, a day or two later, i hit on, but it refused to set. i tried again on another day and it still wouldn't set. *tr
A few weeks after purchasing my van i had issues with my brake light and abs light coming on while i was driving. it did seem to cause any issues and the lights when off ever time i turned my van off and then back on. a few months ago i was coming up to a red light so naturally i started to slow down when i tried to come to a complete stop i kept going. the perfect way to describe what happen, it felt like i hit my brakes on a solid sheet of ice. i could here the abs clicking and also felt the vibration in the brake pedal. that day it was 95 degrees and sunny. i almost caused an accident and the only things that stopped me was the emergency brake. it continued to do it every time i tried to slow down to stop that i refused to put my children in the vehicle. last week after almost causing a few accidents i ended up pulling the main fuses to the abs. since i have done this the only issue i have had is my speedometer acting up. i feel that ford needs to seriously look into this issue. i have already had 5 recalls fixed on my van and this needs to be another one. *tr
While driving my windstar van the abs light came on and stayed on. at random times the brake light comes on and off. when both brake lights are on the cruise control doesn't work. *tr
I saw a recall on the speed sensor, my traction controls keeps coming on mother of 4 children and everyday driving van. *kb
I purchased. this car in august 2013 before i got the car has 20 miles down the road the brake light came on subsequently both the abs and the emergency brake light has come on and off the abs light is on most of the time and there is a noise when breaking my mechanic doesn't know what it is and i have found out that this is a recall problem on other vehicles by calling the ford dealer and looking online. this particular van is not covered but it's clearly having the same problem. the speed control stop working within three or four months of my having the car as well. and the rear wiper doesn't work and i'm very suspicious as to why. *js
Brake and abs light go off and on could smell hot copper wire ....code like 11 brake codes all due to abs module. *tr
The check traction control system warning illuminates, as well as the abs, trac off, and the brake system warning lights on the dash. *tr
I turned in my ford windstar on to the john west ford diler , the abs, and brake lights came on 3 days before to brought it for been diagnosed. 2 days after they gave me an estimate for $ 2400.00 dollars. that really surprise me and i answer no thanks do not fix my car. they put my van together and since that moment my van i didn't start again is like a death . they said the pcm and abs module got burned. i think they made a mistake and kill my van pcm but i cant proved. i was reading the abs recall about and sounds like there is nothing releated wiht the pcm module. any way they sent my van back home onto a town truck and at this moment a can't find the problem yet. oh i almost forgot some for sure they charge me $ 200.00 for diagnosis. if you want to confirm my history you can call[xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2001 ford windstar. the contact stated that after having repairs under nhtsa campaign id number: 09v399000 (vehicle speed control), the vehicle experienced major electrical problems and brake fluid leaking. the fluid leaked on the abs modules, causing the electronic components to have a short, including the brakes. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer where the dealer advised that the abs module needed to be replaced. the failure mileage was 106,000. the vin was not available.
Tl* the contact owned a 2001 ford windstar. the contact stated that while parked and unoccupied, the vehicle engulfed into uncontrollable flames, which moved intensely in the direction of a nearby residence and burned the front structure of the house. the fire department extinguished the excessive flames. the fire was contributed to an electrical issue involving the speed deactivation switch. the vehicle was declared destroyed and towed to a savage facility. the contact discovered a recall after the failure occurred and was displeased to know that she was not previously notified of the recall. the recall was associated with nhtsa campaign id number 09v399000 (vehicle speed control). the contact experienced the identical consequence mentioned in the recall. the manufacturer was notified and they stated that the vin was included in the recall, but they were unable to provide additional assistance. the approximate failure mileage was 130,000. the vin was unavailable.
The abs and brake light began coming on intermittantly a couple of months ago. it seems that the abs ecu module is the problem as multiple abs codes were read. now, two months later my cruise control no longer works. if you do the research online as well as in your complaint section for 2001 winstar it is an all too common problem. it seems to be a problem that was not addressed properly on an earlier recall by ford (09s09) which included a scds wiring harness replacement only caused by brake fluid leaking onto wiring and causing a potential fire hazard. many owners believe the fluid not only ran down the wiring continuing to run onto the abs connector causing parts to short out and fail and also onto the cruise control connector causing it to fail. i truly believe this is the reason all these abs modules are failing...it's amazing how many complaints with my same problem are on your website these are very expensive parts to replace (over $1000) plus labor. the absence of the abs system does cause braking problems and can cause the brakes to lock up and skid...this happened to me...just missed having a wreck! the connector to the cruise is also being effected causing it to fail as well. i think ford should be required to at least check these vehicle and replace these parts if they are found to be faulty before someone gets in an accident. they may have already. *tt
The abs and brake lights on the dashboard light up and stay lit. they will only go off after the key is turned off. it took several trips to the ford dealership for them to diagnose these: perform q test abs system found multiple dtc's cmdtc c1185 abs pwr relay output circuit failure, c1194 lf outlet valve coil circuit fail, c1198 lf inlet valve coil circuit fail, c1210 rf outlet valve coil circuit fail, c1246 rr outlet valve coil circuit fail, c1250 lf inlet valve coil circuit fail, c1254 rr inlet valve coil circuit fail, c1446 brake switch circuit failure open or shorted to ground, u1262 scp data link fault, fail speed deactivation switch. *tr
The abs light has been on but no one can tell me why. it goes out when the vehicle is shut off but will light up again after about 10 minutes of driving. the cruise control would work sometimes and not others. if finally quit working all together. the fuses are all fine. the power windows and door locks work sometimes and not others or might work on one side of the vehicle but not the other. *tr
Subframe broke 8/2010 and replaced. rusted badly 12/2011 ford dealer fixed , also checked real axel and fixed, recall #11s16 for the brake pressure differential switch leaking, brake light now coming on speedometer not registering odometer not registering ,abs light on, information center says trans error fuel error temp error and also cruise control surges cuts out and the braking distance change suddenly and without warning, the abs and ecm is wet with oil not covered properly. i think this is a ongoing problem with front the brake switch recall that still not fixed.
Tl* the contact owns a 2001 ford windstar. the contact took the vehicle in for repairs under nhtsa campaign id number: 11v030000 (structure: frame and members:underbody shields). the contact stated that the vehicle sat idle on the dealers lot for approximately three months before the contact was informed that the vehicle could not be repaired due to excessive corrosion of the front part of the sub frame. the contact was advised to have the sub frame repaired before recall repairs could be performed. the contact stated that the front and rear of the sub frame was one whole part and if the front was replaced, the entire frame would have to be replaced. the frame was not repaired. in addition, the contact stated that the vehicle was also repaired under nhtsa campaign id number: 09v399000 (vehicle speed control) and as a result, the entire cruise control system became inoperable after recall repairs. the contact was concerned with the potential of the vehicle catching fire. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 74,000.
2001 ford windstar. i took it to the dealership to have some safety recalls done. a few days later i was driving along and smoke started boiling out from under the hood so i pulled over and by the time i got stopped and got the kids out safely it quit smoking. i raised the hood and could see some burned wiring under the brake master cylinder. we got back in and drove on then the transmission started shifting wrong and the brake pedal didn't feel right,it felt spongy. i took it to my mechanic who is ase master and ford senior master certified. he replaced the trans range sensor and told me that the fire was caused by a defective cruise control deactivation switch leaking brake fluid.he replaced the switch and advised me to take it back to the dealer and have them do the recall which is what they were supposed to have done in the first place. he said that it also had a damaged abs module and wiring and that was part of the recall.i called them and they said they only did the rear axle recall that was on the letter i got from ford. my mechanic said that they were required by law to complete all safety recalls while it was in their possession. i am going to take it back but i'm afraid to drive it cause it hardly has any brakes. my mechanics said it was because all the brake fluid leaked out of the switch and got air in the lines. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2001 ford windstar. the contact was driving approximately 35 mph when the vehicle surged forward until he abruptly applied to the brakes. the failure also occurred while the contact was stopped with the brakes depressed. in addition, the brake light would intermittently illuminate while the vehicle was shut off. the vehicle was not taken to have the failures diagnosed and was not repaired. the contact stated that neither failure occurred until after the vehicle was repaired under the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number: 10v385000 (suspension:rear:axle:non-powered axle assembly). the failure and current mileage was 126,000.
occurrence: 12 october 2010. traveling i-95 washington,dc/suitland, md. vehicle: ford windstar, 2001. speed : 60-65 mph. traffic : dense. failure of defective part : rear axle snapped in two parts while traveling on smooth highway, northbound. explosive sound , lots of smoke, extreme consternation/fear of heart attack experienced by my wife and i ( my wife has a dangerous heart condition "ihss") at occurrence. i immediately turned on hazard flashers. managed to maneuver across several lanes of traffic to get to highway shoulder safely!! thank god for the alert fellow travelers behind us!!! if we were hit by any 18-wheelers on the highway, i wouldn't be writing this complaint now!!! concern for our safety was shown to us by fellow travelers; particularly, md traffic safety person, who should be commended by his superiors for his professional and understanding actions!! he looked at the damage and said that he had never seen anything like it before; and he said that we were lucky to be alive!!! van was transported by professionals to the nearest ford dealership where i first became aware that a recall notice was in force for my vehicle!!! at this point, i became greatly disturbed that i had no previous notification of this dangerous condition and that my wife, grand children, etal were traveling in potential rolling coffin! in my opinion, this seems to be criminal; particularly if greater profit motives might be involved! i certainly hope that inferior materials were not used in this regard!! i was informed that my van would have to remain at the ford dealership until ford motor company decides how i will be provided with a safe vehicle , since no replacement axles were available. (nb ; i have no idea whatever other damage exists as a result of this awful failure! i certainly don't want a duplicate axle replacement to replay this horrific catastrophe! in my wife's delicate condition, i cannot expect her to travel in this unsafe vehicle! justice!!! *tr
Abs and brake light come on when driving a few miles after starting car, anti lock brakes do not work. if you shut car off and start back up the lights will go off , they will come back on sometime or stay of for several hundred miles. there were no codes stored to bring up . the speed control deactivation switch has been change . *tr
My abs brake light is still on. i had recall 09s09 performed at a ford dealership. my cruise control does not work. my brake! light comes on and stays on intermittently. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2001 ford windstar. while driving approximately 8-9 mph the contact stated that the abs and red brake light illuminated on the dashboard. the contact checked the brake fluid, and added fluid to the vehicle. he was able to continue driving to his destination with the warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer. the dealer advised him of recall 09v399000, vehicle speed control and performed the recall repair. the vehicle was taken to an auto parts store for diagnostic testing; however, there were no failure codes displayed. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 130,534 and the current mileage was 131,768.
Customer brought vehicle in for abs light on, found scds switch to be leaking brake fluid and replaced with a motorcraft updated switch. after service while vehicle was still in shop bay with ignition off, vehicle abs unit started on fire. we then removed all power from vehicle and found that after removing the abs module connector brake fluid was found inside of abs module, and the connector was melted. we then called ford dealership to see if the were any recalls concerning this vehicle and the abs module and or switch, and were told that there were none. we have since found many articles online concerning this matter, and yet no recall ? another half hour and the doors would have been closed for the night, we would have lost our shop, all vehicles inside. please make them stand behind this clear and evident problem. *tr
Abs light on 2001 ford windstar stays on & all odometer functions & radio cease operation & freeze in place! *tr
Hi, i went in to the ford dealership to take my car for a recall for a speed control switch on 2001 ford windstar, after 2 weeks of being there my brakes and abs lights came on at the same time, i told my husband he said maybe i need it brake fluid, we put brake fluid it was missing some but nothing considerable, that was almost at the end of the winter, the lights will come on and off as they felt like it, but now they stay lid all the time, i was looking online and seems to be lots of owners of same car has same problems with both lights staying lid always. should this be a ford problem or should i spend $800.00 plus labor to get my car fix???? *tr
Had my 2001 ford windstar in for recall 09s09 (also described as 05s28 on my ford service invoice). speed control deactivation switch was replaced after burning odor was detected and a determination that unit was leaking. service advisor at ford told me my vehicle would need a new abs electronic control module (ecm). i replied that my on-line research indicated that problems with the ecm could or might very likely be connected to the leaking scds. his answer was that they were "unrelated". considering my research, that statement appears to be untruthful. i have begun to notice an increase in braking distance. both my abs and brake lights are on, allowing no distinction to be made between an abs problem and an actual brake problem. this in itself is a design flaw and defect! please note also that there is a design flaw in the ecm, the design of which causes noticeable expansion in the unit during periods of hot weather, and results in electrical contact issues within the unit. i believe this ecm issue also deserves the immediate attention of nhtsa, and an immediate recall from ford. thank you for giving this matter your most serious consideration and attention. this is a safety issue that concerns many thousands of us, and we appreciate your advocacy on our behalf. *tr
Abs and brake light on and cruise control not working leaking master cylinder switch. *js
Tl*the contact owns a 2001 ford windstar. the vehicle was parked and engulfed in flames. the fire department was called to scene and the fire was extinguished. the vehicle was completely destroyed. the vehicle was towed to a recovery facility. the contact stated that the failure was directly related to the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 09v399000(vehicle speed control). the recall remedy repair was performed on the vehicle prior to the fire. the cause of failure had not been determined at the time of the complaint. the failure mileage was 155,816.
I had the recall 09809 repair done on my 2001 ford windstar on 12-0-09 (inspected deactivation switch, leaking, replace switch and apply grease to connectors). prior to that on 7-13-09 i reported to ford dealer that the red brake and yellow anti-lock brake lights came on especially when the ac was on. they quick checked the module and filled brake level per the receipt for $29.50. this past week i took it in again with the same problem and also an oil change and told them i thought the recall repair needed to be done again. they told me the lights coming on where not related to the recall and gave me code #s and stated that it needs abs control modules with a part estimate of $853.88 and labor at $97.50. they stated they contacted ford as i had told them i was wanting an adjustment on the cost of checking on it again and they said ford offered no assistance. when i had first taken the car in i attempted to show the man a consumer reports article about the recall in the january 2010 edition which mentions the faulty cruise control switch leaking causing potential for a fire. anyway the second man when i went to pick up the van would also not look at the article and asked me where i heard of it "on the internet?". i feel like the problem stems from what was supposedly fixed in the recall and from what i have now seen on the internet it appears others are still having the same problems after recall repairs. i don't know if i should get the module fixed, have them undo/remove the cruise or abs system or what. i feel ford is trying to get by not entirely fixing the problem due to financial reasons. please let me know if an investigation can be opened if one has not been already and what my safest best course of action would be. *tr
Braking distance suddenly increased. *tr
2001 ford windstar abs warning light comes on intermittently with fewer incidence of low tire pressure warning light although all tires pressure reads 32psi when cold just had scds switch replaced under recall and was told had nothing to do with the abs warning light. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2001 ford windstar. the contact stated that the dealer repaired the vehicle under the nhtsa campaign id number: 09v399000 (vehicle speed control) recall, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer denied any assistance with repairing the defect. the contact stated the recall did not give a solution to the defect, but instead slows down the failure from occurring. the failure mileage was 110,000 and the current mileage was 116,000.
When the abs light and brake warning lights come on, the braking distance significantly increases. this is an intermittent problem that comes on with hot weather. on a cool morning or at night there will be no warning lights, but they come up when car heats up in the sun. the ford recall 09s09 was done on this car and brakes are in very good condition. the abs seems to work when the warning light are gone, but brakes seem to be slow to respond in hot weather when heat triggers the abs warning lights. *tr
After having the ford windstar oct. 09 09s09 recall fixed on our 2001 windstar due to leaks and malfunctioning a/c and cruise control, the abs and brake indicator lights are still intermittently lighting on the dashboard. the ford dealer we took it to said that when those are on, we have no abs system because the ecm is malfunctioning at those times. we're seeing increased braking distance with this problem. *tr
Abs light and brake light are on ever since the recall (11/09) fix on the cruise switch. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2001 ford windstar. the contact had the cruise control set at 60 mph when the vehicle suddenly accelerated to over 60 mph. when the contact applied the brake, the cruise control did not disengage. when the contact shifted into neutral, the cruise control disengaged. the failure occurred twice after the vehicle was taken to the local dealership for repairs for recall 09v399000 (vehicle speed control). the contact planned to take the vehicle to the dealership for diagnosis. the current and failure mileages were approximately 18,000.
