For two years my abs and brake light for my 2001 ford windstar will come on after driving for long periods. i have taken to the dealership and they say nothing is wrong and that if the abs light is on it just means that the abs system won't work. well, driving in snow and ice in chicago without abs is a huge issue. *tr
Front end steering, disturbing front end frame sound, abs lights noticed abs braking problem, brake light,od light, interior lights flash on and off intermittently when driving. have to cut the van off and restart for to stop that only last awhile. .took into dealer for recalls still dealing with electrical problem so forth. i never been so scared of an vehicle in my life. *tr
Abs failure - 2001 ford windstar. *tr
I stopped at a red light and noticed smoke puff out from under the left side of my hood. i thought i was overheating, but my temp gauge showed nothing. as i pulled away from the red light and off to the side of the road i noticed my abs light and my brake light had come on and my o/d light began flashing. my speedometer and odometer had completely shut down. i checked under the hood and saw no visible problems. i drove the vehicle back home and over the next few days i noticed i was losing brake fluid and brake pressure. i parked the vehicle and began driving a second vehicle until i could get a mechanic to check out the windstar. i took it to my mechanic and he said the brake fluid was leaking around the brake pressure differential deactivation switch in front of the master cylinder. he said he had heard there had been problems with this on windstars and recommended i check to see if there had been a recall, which i am doing now. *tr
2001 ford windstar: abs, traction control system, and cruise control all suddenly fail while driving at highway speeds. each system works properly at 55mph and lower, until driving on slick or rough pavement; at 60mph or over, all 3 systems are unusable even on dry and smooth pavement. to have speed or braking system not working at the times one might need them presents possible dangerous consequences (fortunately we were able to "pump the brakes", and steer tight-fisted to avoid collisions so far). 8tr
My 2001 windstar had been making a scrunching noise each time i went off a curb. i took it to a tire place as that's when i found the crack in the axle in august 2010. the tire dealer didn't make that kind of repair so i call ford dealership who told me to bring the car in and that a recall had just been issued. my car sat for six months. on 1/26/2011 the dealer called and said my axle had been repaired and that i could pick the car up. i couldn't pick it up that day. on 1/27/11 i heard the news state a new recall and i looked it up. turns out my car is involved in that recall too. i went to the dealer and i communicated to them that i do not want that vehicle back under any circumstances. the abs light has been malfunctioning for three years or more. since i got the vehicle i had many problems with sensors and i have had to replace the transmission after having only around 78,000 miles on the vehicle. i completed all maintenance on my vehicle as suggested by ford, yet i have had so many problems. i called ford on 1/27 and told them i do not want the vehicle back. they said a buy back isn't being offered for this recall at this time. it may be offered when the letter is distributed. i still do not want this vehicle back. i have three children and i cannot trust that this vehicle is safe. *tr
I own a 2001 ford windstar. my abs & brake light came on about 4 weeks ago. it would come on a few min. after it gets warm & not go out till i turn off the vehicle. i took it to the ford dealership in commerce asking if they could check it out. i told the parts assoc' what was going on & he stated for about $1000.00 it could be fixed.(a new sensor) he also stated that most people who have this problem do not bother fixing it due to it will not cause any harm. the abs & brake only apply to things like a rail road track. and that i will still have brakes. *tr
Abs and brake warning lights on dash board occasionally turn on. once on they remain on until the car is restarted. *tr
Abs light on 2001 ford windstar stays on & all odometer functions & radio cease operation & freeze in place! *tr
Hi, i went in to the ford dealership to take my car for a recall for a speed control switch on 2001 ford windstar, after 2 weeks of being there my brakes and abs lights came on at the same time, i told my husband he said maybe i need it brake fluid, we put brake fluid it was missing some but nothing considerable, that was almost at the end of the winter, the lights will come on and off as they felt like it, but now they stay lid all the time, i was looking online and seems to be lots of owners of same car has same problems with both lights staying lid always. should this be a ford problem or should i spend $800.00 plus labor to get my car fix???? *tr
Ford windstar 2001 van. periodically the check traction control warning message along with the abs warning light and brake light was coming on. now it seems to be occurring more frequently within the past month or two. *tr
Abs light and brake light kept coming on. several incidents when coming to rolling stop abs brakes would activate and van would not stop even when brake pedal was to the floor. this is after the 2001 ford windstar van was taken in and had the switch recall done. had to have the abs module replaced. *tr
Frequent and persistent deactivation of the abs system in 2001 ford windstar. this problem has come and gone on the van and there are recalls to cover the fire risk. the abs system will through an alarm when the car is driven. this is an intermittent alarm the comes and goes it the cooler months and if no most of the time in the summer months. when the abs system is disengaged the breaking distance is much longer when compromised road conditions. we were involved in a near miss when driving in snow and ice. this prompted further investigation and it seems that this is a persistent problem for abs systems on the windstar van. *tr
Abs and brake lights is on at the dashboard and abs doesn't work. *tr
1. seems as if in warmer weather months(may-oct) the abs, brake warning lights come on intermittently....not at all in rainy cooler/ freezing months (nov-apr) 2. almost everyday the abs, brake warning lights illuminate on the dash. no abs when the lights are illuminated....causing longer braking times in an emergency stop, or possibly a collision in wet weather. 3.we were told approx. $1300.00 parts and labor out of our pocket if we want it corrected to replace the abs control module....i guess we will risk it....thanks ford for your outstanding quality!!!
I have had my 2001 ford windstar for 4 years, and i have replaced the brakes pads and rotors 5 times and looks like i will be on my 6th replacement soon...the abs light on the dashboard keeps on in the engaged and will not release. *tr
2001 ford windstar:speedo inop when red brake light comes on, abs light on, and red brake warning light on intermittently. took to dealer to have recall performed and they informed me that recall would not cover. called ford hotline and they talked to dealer. pulling out of dealer abs light came back on. dealer says problem is not related to abs recall. now took to another dealer and they say $2700 to fix abs ecu, which was supposed to be fixed during the recall. *tr
I have a 2001 ford windstar. when i received recall notice 09v399000 i brought my vehicle in for the repair. the issue that i was experiencing in regards to the abs/brake lights going on while the car is in use has not been fixed. i believe that there is still and issue that needs to be addressed. this is an ongoing problem. *tr
We bought van used... from beginning abs and brake lights on dash are constantly on. i believe this is causing the also constant beeping. we have gotten a tune up, changed the brakes, oil, airfilter and had the codes checked... lights are still on and still lots of warning beeps going off !! *tr
Abs light is o in my 2001 ford windstar even after the recall in 2009 for abs ecm failure - abs brake light. the light continues to stay on for the past year almost and it is causing other defects in my vehicle. my vehicle will shut down on me completely and nothing in my vehicle will work until i get a jump ad it is causing issues with my brake system and transmission! *tr
Abs and brake light came on and then speed thing stopped working so i didn't know what speed i was going. my mechanic said after searching for 2 days that is probably brake pressure switch. i looked it up online and saw many ford windstars had same problem that have even caused fires! thanks *tr
Abs brake light, brake and trac off light turn on intermittently. *tr
The abs light and brake light on dash come on in my 2001 ford windstar. i had the brakes checked out by my mechanic. can't find a reason why. lights still keep coming on. *tr
Abs & brake lights are coming on the dashboard intermittently a few times each day. started doing research and found hundreds if not thousands of people with my exact same complaint and trouble codes stored in the computer. had problem diagnosed at ford dealership and they say its the abs control module underneath the drivers side door mounted on the bottom of the van. we're going to replace the abs module to turn off the brake lights on the dashboard, and are going to replace the brake switch on the master cylinder to help prevent chance of fire. *tr
On or about 10 july 09, the abs light and the brake light on my 01 windstar, were coming on intermittently. on 24 july 09, i took my windstar to meridian ford in meridian, idaho to be checked out. a leaking brake switch and the abs module shorting out were the problems found. i opted to pay $174.42 to replace the leaking brake switch, and i chose to wait to spend $654.00 to replace the abs module. both abs light and brake light still come on intermittently. *tr
C1185 abs code. short in abs relay output circuit. abs and brake lights continuously on and activating abs. *tr
Loss of brake fluid, melted brake deactivation switch, brake light (red), cruise control will not activate, abs brake light (yellow), ford trouble code c1185. action regarding repair is pending; service person indicated that abs is not functional but brakes will function normally without abs capability. *tr
2001 ford windstar abs and brake light comes on and stays on until engine is shut down. i've pulled the fuses for the abs as i'm afraid of fire. *tr
Brake pressure differential deactivation switch located under the master cylinder overtime develops a leak. this can cause a short and a fuse trip is engine is on. this leak falls into the abs module. my brake light and abs light is on and i'm having problems with the brakes. i couldn't make a full stop at the employee parking lot at work. almost hit another car and one of my co-workers. *tr
2001 ford windstar: brake pressure differential deactivation switch (2b264) develops a leak causing brake fluid to work down two wires to the abs brake module, the fluid accumulates on the power connectors for the abs system which are powered by fuses and the fluid attracts moisture and leads to fire; therefore no speedometer/odometer-cruise control abs brake electrical problems failure. taking the van to the dealer to be fixed because of major safety problems@ our cost. *tr
Abs and traction control light on and system not working. *tr
I have a 2001 ford windstar and the plug that plugs into the master brake cylinder is leaking brake fluid. through research to appears that this is a frequent problem with the windstar. *tr
Mid 2008 our family minivan abs (anti-lock brake system) light started coming on which meant this feature was disabled. the owners manual states this not to be a problem unless the brake! light also comes on and stays on. for a number of years now the brake! light has come on and it is usually just that we'd hit a bump and the e-brake handle had moved slightly and would go off when handle was reset. recently after driving 25 miles to work with no problem the rear brake seemed to freeze when it was time to go home. the minivan had to be towed to our dealer. we were told there were a number of failures when the car was hooked up to the computer but that the only noticeable problem was there was a cracked half-shaft and tone ring broke which could have caused false computer readings. these two items were fixed and we were sent on our way knowing that if the lights were to come back on there was a possibility the abs module might have to be replaced - with nothing being said of any possible problems with this system, or any explanation of why our rear tire brakes froze. after some internet investigating is appears this problem is more frequent than stated and can result in a fire which is why this agency is being reported to. aside from the very expensive auto bills which we have already and will have to pay to get these problems fixed we don't want our family to burn up as we're driving down the road. thank you for your time and we hope this input and others input will help resolve this problem. *tr
Many electrical problems over the last 4 years ..the latest was smoke coming from the abs unit. had the mass air sensor burn up about 9 months ago. *tr
The brake pressure differential deactivation switch (2b264) located under the master cylinder (behind the air filter) over time develops a leak. this causes a short and a fuse trip, fuse #10 if the engine is on. this leak also causes brake fluid to leak down two wires to the abs brake module (2c219). the fluid accumulates on the (always on) power connectors for the abs brake system which are powered by fuses 101 and 102 and are both 40 amp. the fluid attacks moisture, road salt and leads to a fire when the fluid and moisture act as conductor between the hot leads and ground. this switch has been the subject of other ford recalls, just not the windstar van yet. notice the fluid that leaked on the part below it. this switch will cause cruise control problems, speedometer, odometer and abs brake system problems. *tr
My car experienced intermittent brake emergency light and abs light signals on dashboard, and trouble code "c1185". dealership diagnosed abs module failure. the repair was made. i discovered from http://www.fordwindstarrecall.info/ that an nhtsa investigation was initiated on this issue. the dealership which repaired the car still has the old part, but wants to charge me a $100 "core charge" to return it to me. i think that they are trying to discourage me from recovering the part. i would like to know if it is federal law that they must return it to me for free, so it can be used potentially for evidence. *tr
2001 ford windstar sport se # drove vehicle 2 hours, parked car for approx 2 hrs, returned and then unable to start vehicle, battery would fail then car needed jumped. this happened 3 times. turn car on, abs yellow light, e-brake red light on constantly when driving (intermittent) and will go off when car is turned off. cruise control does not work any longer. pulling e-brake from floor does not trigger red e-brake light. looked behind air filter, brake fluid saturated on abs brake module and wiring below the brake pressure deactivation switch, leaking coming from the brake pressure switch. looked at the switch under drivers side door (below car), verified sticker on cover (next to abs ecm module) indicated ford (kelsey-hayes). checked fuse #10 & #14 (was not blown). the failure lights continue to come on sporadically. ford needs to make this a recall on the windstar.. why is it that this is a recall on other ford vehicles with the same parts and failures. this is a huge fire safety hazard. please make ford make this a recall. *tr
The abs warning light and red brake light come on intermittently. that is once or twice a week, usually on hot days, these lights come on. but when the car is restarted they are off. i have read on the internet that this is a common problem with ford windstars and is due to a malfunctioning abs electronic module. replacing the module does not guarantee that the problem will not come back. this can be serious problem since abs system is not working when lights are on. *tr
On a very hot day i went over a bump and the red brake light and yellow abs light came on in my 2001 ford windstar. i was panicked that the brakes would fail, but after parking the van and restarting it, the lights were gone. they came back on intermittently over the next couple months. i took it to the dealer a couple times before they told me it needed a new abs module. i research the internet to understand the problem, and why it only happens when it is hot out. we decided to postpone the $700 repair, since it doesn't occur when it is cold out. we had no problems this winter, but now that it hot again, the lights are again coming on intermittently. my understanding is that we won't have abs only when the lights are on. but this is a big safety concern in that we don't know if we will be able to count on the abs system working when we need it. ford should be responsible for fixing this problem since it is definitely a safety issue that results from a defective part they designed. at this point we have not replaced the part, it is still in the van, but i anticipate that we will have to replace it soon as the weather gets warmer and the lights become more frequent. *tr
Intermittent failure of abs module assy. ford code 1185. occurs randomly. have not taken any action yet. high expense items. *tr
2001 ford windstar abs brake issue. the abs, red brake light and abs control unit activates on all stops from 5 mph until a complete stop. *tr
My abs and brake lights are on and off intermittently throughout every day. the mechanic said that the abs control module was faulty, but when we researched on the internet, we did some checking at the brake pressure deactivation switch and there is fluid leaking from the bottom of the connection. we took out the fuses, but we understand that this is the problem that causes fires. please make ford call this as a recall. we have already been through this with our 98 ford expedition.... we don't need to have another car as a fire hazard! *tr
Abs failure and electronic control module not working. *tr
2001 ford windstar with brake & abs lights on all the time. *tr
2001 ford windstar abs and brake lights keep coming on for no reason. might come on when hitting bumps and might not. i have had mechanic look at issue. many failures report. ended up brake relay/control module is bad and needs replaced. approx. fix $1200 which explains why ford won't admit issue.. my niece had same van same issue instead of dealing with it she traded van in. lights don't stay on all the time but both come on at same time and go off at same time. mechanic said brakes will work but no abs available when light is on. i would think ford would recognize this as safety issue. problem has existed for approx. 2 years or more on this van. we have owned for approx. 6-7 years. *tr
I own two ford windstar lx's, one a 2001 and the other 2003. both have brake and abs lights that come on together. it does not happen in colder weather. in warmer weather, it happens as soon as the van is warmed up. *tr
2001 ford windstar abs module. *tr
The abs warning light and brake warning light on my ford windstar come on after a few minutes time. the light takes longer to come on during colder weather, but will eventually come on if i drive the van long enough. i have tested my brakes during the winter on slippery roads after this has happened and have come to realize that i lose my antilock brakes. my wheels lock up and my van slides uncontrollably. this problem has been getting worse over the past couple of years. when it first started happening it occurred only every few weeks or so; now it is a daily occurrence. i understand that this is a problem for my windstar owners. i have not had my brake system repaired yet. i cannot afford the high cost. *tr
The abs brake system does not function as designed by ford. there is an intermittent failure caused by heat in the abs (anti-lock brake system) ecm (electronic control module) (2c219) module causing expansion of a large aluminum plate (heat sink) in the ecm which is attached to the ecm main circuit board at all points. the expansion occurs when the unit gets warm especially in the summer months and causes intermittent electrical connection in the unit because the fragile board is being stretched and malformed. the code most commonly scanned by professional mechanics is code c1185 and is revealed as a yellow abs brake light and the red brake light coming on in the instrument panel. the abs ecm part is faulty and the ford dealership says ford will not take responsibility for my repair because there is no recall. this defective part affects the safety of the passengers because the abs brake system is disabled when the failure occurs which is approximately 90% of the driving time. i ordered a new abs ecm unit to replace the defective unit to protect my family. original part has to be returned as there is a core charge associated with the purchase of the new unit. *tr
Constantly being troubled by the brake/abs light on the dash board. upon going to auto zone and checking what kind of code comes up for the problem, i received 20+ codes relating to brakes/abs problems. i looked up the problem and discovered it was very popular amongst ford windstars from 1999-2003. i have a 2001 ford windstar and this problem is very troublesome. upon requesting a quote to fix this problem, i was looking at $2000+ (parts, labor and warranty). it seems the abs module is bad, and it itself costs $550 just in parts. this problem is persistent among a lot of ford windstar and potentially dangerous and life threatening. i would like ford to take some sort of action and issue a re-call. *tr
