Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC problems on 2000 Ford Windstar

Driving home from work. going 20 mph. heard a clunk, then a big bam. front tire was blown. pulled into an empty parking lot. had vehicle towed back to where i work (toyota dealer). service looked at it the next day. the left front axle broke. it also needs a new tire, spring, strut and abs sensor. i've had all the recalls performed. i've always done the service needed. our service department checks it out every year to make sure it's safe. i'm lucky that i didn't hit anyone and was able to keep it under control. *tr

2000 ford windstar. consumer writes in regards to the speed control system modification recall notice problems. *smd the consumer stated after he retrieved the vehicle from the dealer, the vehicle was not idling correctly. the dealer stated the work performed on the vehicle, had nothing to do with the improper idling issue. the dealer informed the consumer the vehicle had a vacuum leak, around the master cylinder. *jb

My instrument cluster has gone crazy... i looked to see if anyone else has had the problem and there are tons of people with the same problem... also my abs light comes on and off all the time... *tr and my right sliding door rattles...

Antilock brake system (abs) light on dashboard. autozone free check reported code c1185 which according to other reports found on the internet relates to a bad solder joint on the abs computer board. *tr

Gauges go crazy and don't work half the time. abs light is always on. steering creeks. there is a recall for my make, model, and year but ford somehow says it is not part of the recall but may become a recall in the future. this is not acceptable. does someone have to die before they will listen and act? *tr

The (mostly un-serviceable) ecu master relay has a bad soldier joint which fails prematurely and causes the abs light and dtc c1185. it also causes the enhanced abs braking system to become inoperable. if your abs light is on. *jb

Braking distance suddenly increased. all recalls have been performed. abs still a problem. *tt

I brought this vehicle on 1/7/2012 from a ford dealership and the abs light would come on after starting and i asked them to check before i brought it and they said it was just a sensor, so when i took it to the ford repair for the two recalls of the rear axle bracket and subframe and they checked the car and said the abs module needed to be replaced because the relay inside was damaged. i called ford and they stated that the recall for the abs wire was done on 10/2011, but the module still went or went before that and they stated that they are not responsible and it was up to me to replace. *tr

Last week as i was driving around town and my instrument panel stopped working and the abs lights would not turn off. the next morning i had to take my son to one of his activities and the instrument panel was still not working and i noticed i had to push the brake pedal all the way down to the floor. i went home and noticed that my car was leaking brake fluid. after much research i found my vehicle had a recall. (09s09) i took my car in this morning to have this recall fixed. this did not fix my instrument panel. after i got home i researched what the problem might be and have found numerous complaints about the same problem from brake fluid leaking on the some of the wires. i contacted ford to see if this would be covered under the recall and they explained to me that the recall only covers that specific part. i am very upset because the recall will only cover the part and not the damage it has caused. i would like to file this complaint to make a record of this. i truly believe that ford should fix the damage that this recalled part has done to my vehicle. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 ford windstar. the contact stated that the abs warning light was continuously illuminated. the contact took the vehicle to a local mechanic for a diagnostic but the mechanic could not read the codes from the test. the contact did not take the vehicle to dealer and the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 165,000.

Braking distance suddenly increased. *tr

Abs and brake light on dashboard remains on all the time. replaced master cylinder and had all brake system checked numerous times but problem not resolved. *tr

Abs light keeps coming on when driving vehicle

Took ford windstar in for recall on axles. upon completion, asked svcman about break pads. svcman said full inspection done and brakes okay. called repairman 2 days later about loose steering and faulty electrical system. car began to vibrate when breaking. took car in. service dept. said brakes bad, cushings bad, ball joint bad, then when placing pads one caliper starts leaking. all in one recall experience. this is how ford makes its service money, recall and destruction to increase service department revenues. $600+ brake job pays for those recall axel kits. my real concern is what isn't rusting on the ford windstar? the axles, rotors, calipers all rusting. my problem is overshadowed by the knowledge that this same dealership sold me this windstar with full knowledge that it had been in an accident causing significant damage to the front right end. the same one with the braking problem. however ford conveniently failed to report the accident to car fax. i found out after purchase when a body shop worker showed me the replaced body work. since one doesn't sit in the passenger seat when test driving, i didn't find out until later that the passenger seat had been ripped from its steel floor bolts. ford replaced the screws and still said nothing. i still find pieces of broken windshield glass in the sliding door wells and in the chair support clamps on the floor when i remove the seats. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 ford windstar. the contact stated that he received notification of nhtsa campaign id numbers: 10v385000 (suspension: rear:axle: non-powered axle assembly), 00v351000 (electrical system:wiring:interior/under dash) and 01v261000 (visibility: windshield wiper/washer: motor) and the vehicle was taken to the dealer for repairs. the vehicle was left with the dealer for over a month and once the vehicle was released to the contact, the power steering would abnormally pull the vehicle to the right. in addition, the windshield washer would only spray to one side instead of both. the anti-lock brake warning light was also illuminating on a consistent basis. the dealer was contacted and they advised him to junk the vehicle. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was approximately 159,000.

I own a 2000 ford windstar. last year the dealership performed a recall related to leaking brake fluid and abs issues. this year i am getting an abs light on and a code of c1185. i was told this code relates to a bad electronic control unit (ecu) for the abs brake system. this is the same part that the brake fluid issue was supposed to correct to prevent vehicle fires. the dealer refuses to replace the ecu as part of the recall (free of charge). the ecu is over $600. i am now at risk of fire and my braking ability has been compromised. i feel that ford should have replaced this part as part of the recall. *tr

Abs light comes on intermittently. disappears on restart. *tr

2000 ford windstar owner, recently had the abs warning light come on, mechanic did on-board computer diagnostic and found the abs control module inoperative. replacement cost in ca is over $1000. vehicle only has 57,000 miles on the odometer. add me to the list of people wanting ford motor co. to do the right thing. *tr

Abs light still on after previous 09s09 recall work done. braking distance suddenly increased. *tr

2000 ford windstar, anti-lock brakes and traction control failure, lights on dash come on and deactivate anti-lock brakes. started after the recall for the brake master cylinder was done. *tr

Intermediate yellow abs warning light. goes on and off at random. hard braking sometimes causes light to come on. at other times, it just comes on. my dealer had my 2000 ford windstar for 3 days and said they could not find a problem. it continues to do this and my wife is concerned as this is our family vehicle. *tr

Braking distance suddenly increased" in category "service brakes, hydraulic". the original recall 09s09 work was completed by ford. however, i still have the abs light coming on intermittently. i have also had the brake light come on intermittently. therefore, i am concerned the problem has not been fixed properly and my brakes are not functioning as they should.

For a year now we be noticing odometer failure, brake light and abs light coming on. recently we found out the brakes weren't working at all. luckily no accidents. i inspected the brake fluid container which was empty. i refilled it and checked around to see for any leaks. i noticed it was leaking at the scds switch. i went online and found a website where they described this to be a common problem and that there was a recall for this. lucky it hasn't caused any fire like it did by some other owners. *tr

The abs warning light on my 2000 ford windstar van has been coming on intermittently and staying on for some period of time (i.e., years). reported this several times to the local ford dealership and they acknowledge that the light is on, but can never figure out the appropriate diagnostics as to what is wrong with the sensors or the abs system and they have been unwilling to replace anything. even during the last recall (cruise control wiring harness issue) the mechanics at shults ford of wexford, pa admitted that the light was on and wouldn't go off, and that they didn't know why, but they made no attempt to replace it. lately, my light has been lit up more constantly and it seems to me that the braking distances are generally longer. i cannot ascertain if the abs system is even engaging or not, but it seems that ford is really not too interested in this problem. i recently applied the brakes during a light rain in which the road was slick from oil/grime because it had not rained in some time, and i heard no evidence of the normal sound of the abs system. i wanted to submit this to nhtsa so that at least this will be documented in case i get into a serious crash as a result of a faulty abs system or abs sensors. *tr

Ford windstar 2000 abs light came on. reading the codes said c1185 power relay failure. happens frequently over the last 9 months, gets worse when it is hot. restart of the vehicle clears the light, but it eventually will come on unexpectedly. *tr

The abs indicator light keeps coming on and going off intermittently. once on it usually stays on until i turn off the car. this started during the summer about a year and a half ago. my mechanic said that most likely the ecm needed to be replaced to the tune of a $700 replacement module from ford plus labor! my ford dealer told me that the 09s09 recall work was done some time ago, but this problem with the abs light coming on continues. i am very concerned after reading up on recent information as it has been reported on multiple sites that leaking brake fluid reaching the abs electronic control module has happened after the supposed recall repair was done in many instances, causing fires and or the loss of the abs braking system working. i have also read many, many reports online about ford windstar owners having the exact same problem, without necessarily having a fire or brake failure...yet. if this electronic control module is so consistently faulty, should ford not be required to replace it at no charge to their customers, especially if there is the possibility of it causing a failure of the abs braking system? *tr

Normal driving conditions, hot weather. the abs and trac lights on the instrument panel light up. abs and trac are disabled, suddenly and unexpectedly increasing braking distance. in cooler weather, the systems seem to be working. no repairs have been done yet. *tr

Abs warning light comes on at random times. maybe more often in hot weather. while light is on abs does not function. if i pull over and shut off the engine, the light usually goes off when i restart the car. auto shop reports this is know issue but ford hasn't done anything about it. control box needs to be replaced approx $1000.00 i had one very close call with a child on a bike just a few block from home. the light was on at the time, and brakes locked up instead of functioning properly. *tr

Braking distance suddenly increased. *tr

My abs light has come on three times. now my brakes are stuck so i am unable to drive. i have not taken it to a shop yet. *tr

I had my 2000 ford windstar's transmission serviced and when i picked it back up the technician pointed out to me that i am leaking brake fluid from a switch on the master cylinder. i was informed that this is very dangerous because the loss of fluid can cause my brakes to stop working. the technician also informed me that brake fluid is flammable and might cause a fire if it is not repaired right away. *tr

Speed control suddenly stopped working. braking distance suddenly increased. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 ford windstar. the contact stated that the abs lamp illuminated, the abs system turns off, and all of the gauges on the instrument panel were malfunctioning. the contact mentioned that the failure only occurred when the weather was hot. the dealer was contacted who stated that the abs module was mounted to an aluminum bracket which expands in the heat and caused the connection to become disconnected. as a result the engine control unit and hydraulic control unit needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 130,000 and the current mileage was 148,000.

the abs light comes on intermittently as i drive -the dealer says its the abs module (i paid $108 for the test) and will cost $1300 to fix -i see from the internet that this is a major and common problem with these cars and feel ford should recall all windstars and fix it. Abs light is on. all recalls to date have been performed by the dealer. *tr

The abs light on our 2000 ford windstar goes on and off (no correlation to anything) and occasionally our braking distance increases when the light is on. *tr

Abs ecm failure - during recall repairs to the abs switch, trouble shooting discovered a malfunctioning abs ecm module. customer was told that this is not a result of leaking brake switch. *tr

Abs brake light on 2000 windstar. *tr

I had the ford october 2009 recall performed (speed control wiring harness fire related) on my 2000 ford windstar, and prior to that there had been an intermittent abs yellow brake light on my dash. i have mentioned this problem to the ford dealer mechanics, and they can never find a fix for it. after the recall, i still have the light come on intermittently. i am concerned that the abs ecm module (2c219) will heat expanding the heat plate as described about 3/4 of the way down the page on this website: http://www.fordwindstarrecall.info/#problem1. it is troubling to me that my abs light keeps coming on, making me wonder about the safety of my braking system, yet ford seems to have no idea what is going on and no desire to investigate thoroughly to fix this problem. i am concerned not knowing whether the abs system is even active or not, or whether every time the light comes on this indicates a damaging situation, overheating (if i remember correctly the 2009 recall was due to abs fluid dripping on the wiring harness), or something even blatantly dangerous out on the road. the events leading up to this failure are not known and inconsistent - the light will come on oftentimes when i am not even applying the brakes. the failure (light) occurs intermittently, sometimes as often as every time i run my windstar, other times perhaps only once every week; once in awhile the light extinguishes itself without shutting off the engine. what was done to correct the problem -- i have taken it to the ford dealers' several times but every time they seem completely baffled why the light is coming on. *tr

Ford company had a recall of a deac switch in which brake fluid was dripping down on....i had the recall done...but my abs yellow dash light is on still...i am worried about the increasing braking distance or whether my abs is working or not...i don't want to feel i can rely on something that isn't working properly. *tr

The abs light on my 2000 ford windstar will not shut off. *tr

2000 windstar braking distance suddenly increased and yellow abs light comes on when vehicle gets warm. diagnostic codes: c1185, c1194, c1198, c1210, c1214, c1242, c1246, c1250, and c1254. *tr

My 2000 ford windstar, abs light comes on sporadically about every time i drive it the light comes on. of course i live in northern mn and i need abs. its a hazard, when i don't know if i'm going to be able to stop. i took it into a mechanic and pulled the code c1185(power relay circuit malfunction). needs a new abs module. *tr

Abs brakes are not working im having alot of problems , i've been having the problem for about a year. *tr

For several months now the abs dash light goes on. it usually shuts off again when the vehicle is restarted. it had previously been in for a recall on the brake pressure switch leak below the brake fluid reservoir. *tr

Braking distance suddenly increased. service brakes, hydraulic. even after recall completed. ford windstar 2000. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 ford windstar. while driving 40 mph he heard a clanging noise coming from the vehicle. the next day while driving the rear end of the vehicle started to shimmy. he pulled over to the side of the road after he saw smoke. he towed the vehicle home. upon vehicle inspection he noticed that brake system was corroded and that the axle had fractured. he was in the process of contacting the service manager. no repairs were made .the failure and current mileages were 117000.

Leaking brake fluid causing damage to speed control. *tr

2000 ford windstar van (with 72,000 miles) - scds recall did not correct the problem. yellow abs light stays on all the time now and braking distance has increased. nor did it resolve the speed control switch either - it still does not function. *tr

Regarding the 2009-2010 perform recall 09s09 of the speed control deactivation switch wire assembly replacement. it did not work - it never worked, nor did it solve the problem. within 2 days of the installation the abs light came on again. to this date brake fluid is still leaking into the component. it causes my brake lights to stay on upon stopping and turning the car off - which if goes unnoticed, it drains the battery. to this date the cruise control does not work. and it has also reduced my safe braking distance. i have very low miles on the van - less than 81,000 miles - so it is not cause by heavy usage. ford has failed to fix the issue which is the leaking brake fluid onto this wiring assembly. there are many ford windstars still in use that are experiencing the same problem. ford should fix this issue of the leaking brake fluid onto the assembly wire. replacing this wire assembly harness did not and will not fix the brake fluid leakage issue. *js
