Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford taurus. while driving approximately 35 mph, the transmission began to jerk with hesitation and the warning indicator illuminated until the engine was turned off. in addition, the transmission would slip gears unexpectedly. the failure recurred whenever the vehicle was in operation. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnosis where they stated that the transmission would need to be replaced due to internal damage. in 2009, a rebuilt transmission was installed in the vehicle by an authorized dealer. the vehicle had not been repaired for the most recent failure. the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 23,000 in 2009. less than 50,000 in 2012. updated 1/15/13 *cn the consumer stated the dealer was willing to pay for half of the transmission repairs. the manufacturer was unwilling to assist with repairs. updated 1/29/2013 *js updated 06/10/14

On 5/24/2012, i was driving in my neighborhood at about 45 mph when all of a sudden the rpms spiked to about 4000 and the car would not slow down from 45 mph even with my foot off the accelerator. i was able to turn down a side street and stop. my brakes did work. i had the car towed to my dealer. the dealer replaced the throttle body and speed control cable and said they had worn causing cable to come loose and jam throttle body. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford taurus. the contact stated that while driving 45 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was coasted to the shoulder and towed to a local mechanic. the mechanic performed a diagnostic which located the failure at the torque converter. the vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure and the current mileage was 51,581. updated 05/10/12*lj

Car accelerator stuck. put car in neutral and park and went up to 4,000 rpm. had to turn car off. taking car in to a service center. *tr

Car was speeding up by itself and took all i could do to stop it. on 02.23.12 took car into dealership and they tested. said the throttle cable; broke off a corner of cover and freed up cable. still having problems, intermittently, with car driving without use of gas pedal and not slowing down until i force it to. *tr

This incident first happened while i was pulling into a parking spot and since many times. the car gets stuck in full throttle and sometimes impossible to stop i have to throw into neutral to keep from slamming into vehicles, it has torn up my new brake pads that i put on in the fall. it will be fine for a period of time then all of sudden out of no where the car will get stuck in full throttle. i have been told by a ford mechanic that this is a common issue. *kb

Throttle sticks open when driving and revs to 3000 at a stop when parked. can't take foot off the brake otherwise car speeds up. have to turn engine off and let sit before starting again. has happened 4 times, but no codes found when scanned. *tr

I was pulling into a gas station and starting to slow down, but the car kept accelerating. i applied the brakes and put the car in park, but the engine was racing. i pushed down on the gas pedal very hard several times before the car stopped the excessive acceleration. another time i was driving on the freeway at about 60 mph and the car started to accelerate, but i also pushed down very hard several times before the acceleration stopped. *tr

I was driving on the highway going about 65 miles per hour and the car just began to speed up and the peddle left from my foot and i had to put the car in neutral and punch on the peddle to try to stop it from going to 100. this has happened several times even at a 25-35 mph pace. the car will just take off. i am currently not able to drive this car due to my safety. this issue with the transmission that i had to replace is, it would not go into 2nd gear, like if i came to a stop and then tried to accelerate, the car would only go about 5 miles per hour. i could not drive it in the streets because it could not keep up with the traffic so i had to have the transmission replaced and out of pocket almost 3k. at the time the car only had about 25000 miles on it. *tr

Sudden loss of power transmission power/burning smell. driving in madison wisconsin, the 2005 ford taurus suddenly lost power. i was able to coast to a stop, but needed to be towed to a repair shop. the symptoms, transmission id and other characteristics are the same as the transmission issues with freestar and other ford minivans/autos. upon consulting with a ford authorized dealer, the only remedy is to replace the transmission. when pressed for an answer, they described the same situation as the current recall ... and stated that my taurus transmission was the same transmission .. most likely with the same issue. *tr

Transmission went out while driving on a busy street. towed to a ford dealership and the mechanic claimed the diagnostics indicated that the transmission pump went out. this may have caused other transmission components to go out as well. with only 104,000 miles, the mechanic suggests a new transmission be installed. *tr

Ea09016 this recall should be expanded to include all models of car vehicle with this transmission/issue not just mini vans. there are quite a number of complaints with the same issue. we had the same issue and during my investigation this appears to be transmission (torque converter related) not vehicle make and model related. i have filed complaints with both nhtsa and ford only to be told (by ford) that the recall doesn't apply because it is this decision does not apply to other types of vehicle. *tr

The transmission on my six year old vehicle failed after only 79,000 miles. there are multiple reported incidents of transmission failure for the 2005 ford taurus (please see http://www.carcomplaints.com/ford/taurus/2005/transmission/transmission_failure.shtml for a list of similar incidents). i believe that nhtsa needs to conduct a full investigation of ford motor company to ensure that it is following safety and construction standards. surely, a defective and faulty transmission is not what consumers should expect when purchasing a vehicle. i notified ford motor company about this issue, and they refuse to take responsibility for the construction of their vehicle. this is a very dangerous defect, and could cause serious injury and loss of human life. since ford refuses to acknowledge its responsibility for the issue, i expect the nhtsa, as a government agency, to fulfill its responsibility to consumers to investigate the construction and safety of 2005 ford taurus transmissions. i appreciate your response, and i am willing to provide any necessary additional information. *kb

Sticky throttle. engine race to 3200 rpms. i had a hard time stopping the vehicle. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford taurus. the contact stated that while driving 40 mph, the vehicle began to independently accelerate . the contact pumped the brake pedal until the vehicle stopped. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection and they stated the transmission needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 100,000.

Driving down expressway and car began to speed up on its own. could not get it to slow down. had to put car in neutral and pull into emergency lane. i then turned car off and was able to stop. had to be towed to shop. throttle was fixed. *tr

I just recently purchased a 2005 ford taurus and it was running fine for like 2 days. then the cruise stopped working a few days later the accelerator began to stick. i was going about 30 and suddenly the car began to take off on its own and i nearly hit the car in front of me. i had to steer off the road and pressing the brakes was very hard. this seems to be a trend for the car and is extremely dangerous!! someone should not have to die for this to be recalled!! *kb

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford taurus. the contact stated that the transmission would not shift gears. in addition, the vehicle would abnormally lunge forward while in park. the vehicle was towed to a local mechanic who diagnosed that the transmission was defective and needed to be replaced. the transmission was replaced but the failure recurred one month later. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 120,000 and the current mileage was 125,000.

Transmission went out on my 2005 ford taurus sel. there is less than 65,000 miles on this car. the manufacturer should issue a recall on the transmission of this model year. transmission issues are the number one complaint on all the websites i visited. i now have to pay $3,000+ to fix the transmission on a car worth $7,500 - this is not a good quality vehicle. *tr

First, i want to say that this vehicle is well maintained and serviced on a regular basis. it was a pleasant summer day but had more of a autumn feeling whether. i was driving on the interstate in east tennessee, i had just merge onto the interstate and had been driving for maybe 10 minutes. i slowed down for traffic to about 40 mph as i crest a hill. when i stepped back onto the gas (going down hill now), i felt the car shift into 4 gear. i then felt, and heard a pop similar to a blowout, but in reality it was the car sliding out of gear. i had only managed to reach about 50mph when the car stop accelerating, (i put on my hazards) i was trying to coast to a safe place, but the construction projects made no place to pull off. within 5 seconds, a car traveling behind me was bumped by a tractor trailer and was knocked into me. my ford mechanic says the transmission is shot and the catalytic converter went out (was that the popping noise? i wonder.) $3500 to fix this problem. i have google 05 transmission problems and have found numerous over 500 problems that have to do with. i don't know whether ford was trying to save a few dollars, or if they were trying to save fuel mileage, but this transmission is a serious problem. i will not buy another ford if this problem doesn't get resolve by ford recalling these transmissions. last laugh, insurance companies will repair any car to the quality it was just before the wreck (no better, no worse.). since my transmission went out before the car wreck, they can replace it, ergo... the insurance covers the body work, but will not cover the transmission. my question to ford is does someone have to die before you fix your errors. my father worked at ford for 22 years; he would be.... really disappointed to see what ford pass for quality. *tr

Lost all motive power or the ability to move forward or reverse without warning. *tr

July 25, 2011, 1st engine revved but car did not move. pressed gas,car took off at full speed. reached speeds over100 mph in a 35 mph, turned off ke to stop. ford replaced throttle body ,cruise control cable due to wear, fuel filter, air filter , transmission flush, replace washer hose at $748.22 cost to owner. 2nd, june 2012. car started sudden acceleration, turnoff key to stop car. ford dealer could not replicate sudden acceleration incident, told owner to pick up vehicle, no work performed. 3rd incident march 21,2013, sudden acceleration shifting into drive, turned off key, re-started engine light came on, car missed & chugged. car would not go 20 mph. ford said they could not replicate rapid acceleration. went to pick up car at deal and when started engine light was on and car missed and chugged. could not drive car off of dealer's lot. returned keys with instructions to review rapid acceleration problems. contacted ford corporate customer service opened case [xxx]. was told that no recall exists on that vehicle, we could have a discount on buying a new ford vehicle to resolve the incident. ford dealer on nd review replaced ignition coil assy, spark plugs, updated pcm codes, tightened tie rods, 4 wheel alignment, replaced 2 front tires, fuel filter, front or rear brakes with rotor replacements, oil filter and lube change at cost of $1681.82 to owner. ford dealer at pick up would not provide written guarantee that rapid acceleration problem had been fixed or eliminated. my son's safety at hands of fords refusal to fix problem. his fathers 2002 escape (similar 6 cylinder ford) has a recall and fix for rapid acceleration problems. we asked ford customer service about future liability if we sold the car & they said if we sell the car there would be no liability. this does not seem to ethical & leaves vehicle owner at a potential safety risk. *tr

I own a 2005 ford taurus sel. it's been a piece of junk since the day i bought it.when i first bought it,it was burning off front tires every 2000 miles,it was aligned by the dealer twice, ended up having to take it to a friends tire shop,we [i'm a motorcycle builer/welder..] ended up cutting the welds on the shock mount and moved it.the gas mileage is aweful, but now, after 96,000 miles, the transmission started acting up.it was changed every 30,000 miles, always looked like mud.two weeks after it started slipping,my wife was coming home late from work on a secluded, dark, really busy highway, out of the blue, the transmission just completely stopped working, she had to drive it into a ditch,or get killed, luckily, the car wasn't damaged badly otherwise. she spent 45 minutes stuck on the side of the road in the dark until i got there with a wrecker.i've looked online, and talked to friends who own garages, these cars are scrap.nearly every one that makes it to 100,000 miles will experience catastrophic transmission failure. at any time, anywhere, totally without warning... [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Ford taurus transmission just stopped when driving, dealer said $2500 to fix, i checked on line and found numerous complaints of same issue. ford need to fix this on a recall basis.thank god my car was not on highway going fast with my 3 kids in it , then it would not have been a recall issue but a lawsuit issue. ford need to look at this and refund all customers that have paid out of pocket for these repairs. *tr

2005 taurus - driving car and came to a stop. when i went to accelerate transmission would not catch gear. there was no slipping of gears, noises or any other kind of warning that the transmission was going out. i have found a couple links on the internet where this has happened to several people with the same year car. ! please see posted links, this needs to be made a recall! http://www.carcomplaints.com/ford/taurus/2005/transmission/transmission_failure.shtml http://www.aboutautomobile.com/complaint/2005/ford/taurus/automatic+transmission. *tr

Throttle stuck while driving. this has happened many times. i have had a transmission shop look at it to no avail. decided to write you after hearing other consumers report the same problem in a local new story. *tr

My 2005 ford taurus has been a headache since day one. today on my way to work the car suddenly accelerated and applying the brakes was a challenge as i almost couldn't stop when pulling over for safety. prior to this, over $2000 for a new engine, another $900 for a new transmission, another $250 for a power steering pump, and daily issues like the door not latching and me trying to hold driver's door shut while driving at the same time, and then having to tie a rope across the front seat to the passenger door. also, the daytime running lights turn on on their own at any given time and drain the battery. this car is a piece of crap. if you buy this kind or car, make sure you have aaa too. *tr

Own a 2005 ford taurus sel. with less than 100k miles on it, and without warning, the transmission stopped engaging. this happened on a busy interstate 90 miles from home. luckily, we were able to pull the car off to the shoulder. this and many other accounts have led me to believe that ford has installed faulty transmissions in this model line. no transmission should drop out without warning with such low mileage on the transmission. transmission needed to be rebuilt, cost me $2200 in the end. *tr

We were stopped at a stop sign and when we went to press the gas pedal to go the rpm's revved for a second and then nothing. the car would not go like it was in neutral. we turned the car off then turned it on again and still nothing. the car wouldn't go into gear. now we are trying to figure out how to get it fixed and are going to the dealership tomorrow to see if they can help. we have only had the car for a year and it only has 95,000 miles on it. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford taurus. the contact was driving 40 mph when the acceleration pedal became stuck in open throttle position. the contact had to abruptly stomp on the pedal in order for it to release. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who advised that the throttle or the vehicle speed control cable failed and caused the failure. the dealer advised that the cables would need to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 110,000 and the current mileage was 126,000. the consumer stated sudden acceleration caused the transmission to fail, due to the strain of trying to slow the vehicle down. updated 08/22/12

Transmission failure while driving, no notice, no nothing. just lucky it did not give out in the middle of a busy intersection. could have been a real bad accident if it would have. *tr

2005 ford taurus se - sudden transmission failure. 65,248 miles on car. traveling 70mph on major highway, passing another vehicle, engine suddenly revved to 7,000rpms and slowed fast, managed to get it side of road. had only park and neutral gears. no warning light, no unusual noise, no previous issue with transmission or engine. required a new rebuilt transmission, $3,000 expense. luckily no accident occurred, no one hurt. *tr

I was in the process of parking my car and when i put it into park the engine revved up and had to turn off the car as it would not throttle down. the second time i was driving, was applying brakes and started to drive and engine revved up, had to brake and then turn car off. third time i was starting vehicle and engine revved up, had to turn off. the cruise control cable was replaced on the vehicle less than a year after i purchased. *tr

2005 ford taurus transmission failed at 56,000mi aamco said was a know issue. and believed a class action suit was filed. want to be included. something about the torque converter/spline. went to store, was driving home, and transmission just went as i was pulling onto the hwy. my family and i could have been killed! *tr

Torque converter on 2005 ford taurus blew up. i was driving down a very busy road during rush hour traffic when my car just stopped. in addition to delaying traffic it was a very unsafe situation for myself and my children who were in the car with my. the mechanic who fixed my car showed me the torque converter and the metal had turned blue from being heated to an extreme heat. he also said that the torque converter blew up sending metal pieces into my transmission. i have talked to several people who have had similar issues and i think it is time that ford is held accountable for an obviously faulty part. thank you for your time. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford taurus. while driving approximately 5 mph, the transmission failed and the gear would not shift out of first gear. the vehicle was towed to the dealer and diagnosed as a failed clutch plate. the dealer repaired the vehicle and also replaced the transmission. the manufacturer advised that the vehicle was outside of factory warranty and would not assist with the repair. the failure mileage was 62,000 and the current mileage was 63,000. updated 01/06/11*lj 03/28/11

2005 ford taurus transmission failed in traffic, had to be pushed across 3 lanes of traffic. 57,000 miles. mechanic found stripped torque converter pump drive plate. old part available. found hundreds of instances of this safety issue occurring online but no recall by ford as of now. *tr

Transmission light came on and although rpm's would go to 6000 you could only drive 30mph - no warning or indication of any transmission problem - service had been done per manual and was current - mileage was 60k - rebuilt transmission was the solution - really not happy. *tr

2005 ford taurus 3.0, vulcan ohv flex-fuel engine. 24,000 miles, driver door would not close anymore. hood misaligned itself. interior pieces falling off. when starting, starter would spin free of the flywheel and not start. (still does this, but will start on the 2nd try usually) brake light switch is erratic, light braking produces a flashing effect like i'm hitting the brakes frantically. makes me look like an idiot driver.(have seen this on other recent mid-2000's fords before. thought they were idiot drivers! cannot use e-85 in any chilly weather below 50 degrees or it is a very long start and it'll idle at 2,500 until warm. routinely gets 17 mpg while being driven very easy. 30,000 miles, flex-pipe exhaust broke on highway, almost ripped off whole exhaust. wasn't even worn looking, just broke in half! brake rotors warped quickly, never did any hard stops.continental tires were badly cracked and unsafe, had never been run low or abused. brake pedal shakes up and down periodically with no reason found, feels like abs but car has no abs. 40,000 miles, complete transmission failure while highway cruising. seat adjustment will not budge, wife cannot drive car as seat is set for me. 45,000 miles, ac compressor bearing failure requiring compressor replacement. power window controls do not work. interior lights work intermittently. accelerator cable needed replacement. uses oil at a high rate for a low-mileage car.( have never neglected oil.) outer door window rubber is badly deteriorated and cracking apart. i've had 20 year old cars that had better rubber. paint is beginning to chip off the dash(why is this painted?). this car is of terrible quality. i have had 37 cars and this is the worst one of them all. i have always liked fords until this car. ford did honor the warranty when in effect but it is falling apart way too fast and my only recourse is to never buy another ford. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford taurus. while driving at approximately 55 mph, the engine began to rev and the vehicle started losing speed. the contact was able to pull over and the vehicle was towed to an authorized dealership where the torque converter was repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 81,000. the current mileage was approximately 82,000. updated 06/29/10 *bf updated 07/06/10

While driving down the road in our 2005 ford taurus it suddenly sounded as if our car was in neutral. after coasting down a hill and into a parking lot we discover that our car will not go into any gear. we had the car towed and now are going to have to figure out how to pay to replace the transmission. *tr

I was just driving and there was a whirling sound a my car just coast to stop. right now i have to spend 1700.00 for a rebuilt transmission. *tr

O/r transmission let go....r&r transmission torque converter defected and replaced at 69,533 odometer miles, this car is to new to have problems with the torque converter. *tr

On february 5,2010 at 4:44 pm,my ford taurus se 4dr sdn neglected to proceed from a stop light and was having no problems proceeding prior to that stop light and was still in drive after the light turned green to go,but was not able to proceed and was still in drive and running, thinking i was able to proceed with traffic and not able to, had to push the taurus off the road with help from other drivers, than call for a tow. i had it towed back to the greenway ford dealer ship later that night for one hundred and ninety eight dollars out of pocket. after calling the said mentioned dealership above was told that the mechanic couldn't start repairs until 02/08/2010. when the repairs were done after eight hours of mechanical work,i was called to come and pick-up my ford at the tune of $1,593.74 of mechanical repairs to the r&r transmission and the torque converter and transmission filter after my warranty expired after 24,000 miles or 24 months, after researching the ford on the lemon laws found none to be seen or found to be my ford in question, but did find a defected issue with the transmission mentioned above for that year and model and make, witch i made a copy of for my records,i have concerns and a complaint to be settled there-of with ford....... *tr

Transaxle going out with no signs of problem. while driving and making turn transaxle went out while in the middle of turn in middle of intersection. was lucky not a lot of traffic and parking lot close enough where i could coast into safely. no gears except park it was like all other gears was neutral. i am going to have transaxle replaced or rebuilt. *tr

The torque converter on my 2005 taurus broke (69000) which prevented me from engaging a gear. i was in my driveway when this happened and my driveway is a slight slope so trying to figure out what was happening i rolled into the street. luckily no one was traveling on the street at the time but this could have been far more disastrous then it was. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford taurus. while accelerating at 25 mph the rpms increased, but the vehicle down-shifted into a lower gear, and then stalled. he was able to safely avoid a crash. the vehicle was taken to a local mechanic, and the oil and filter were replaced. the mechanic stated that the transmission needed to be replaced. no repairs were made. the current mileage was 88,665 . the failure mileage was 88,661.

Transmission failed with no waning. vehicle stopped moving on highway in traffic. no forward or reverse gears. ford refuses to acknowledge mass amounts of complaints on same type failure. torque converter fails. all ford knowledgeable mechanics repair these problems on regular basis. if you google "ford taurus torque converter problems" you will get back 51,000 hits. that is a lot for ford to say there is no problem. it cost me $1035.00 to have the torque converter replaced on a 2005 model 52,000 mile vehicle. i think that is a problem. we were very lucky because when the car quit moving a semi truck came very close to running over us. i have corresponded with ford by email and letter and they said to go away. *tr

Transmission failed in traffic - nearly caused accident with sudden stopping in traffic - this happened at 56000 miles - dealership did quick fix - same thing happened at 51000 miles - torque converter fails with no warning. *tr

I have a 2005 ford taurus se that i bought for my 17 year old daughter, at 52045 miles, the transmission went out. she was driving on the highway at 60mph with a semi behind her when the transmission went out, dropping her speed to 20mph. ford will not do any thing about this problem, and after some research, i have found numerous complaints about the same thing. i don't understand, if ford knows there is a problem, why they won't correct it. my daughter could have been killed or injured, and yet they won't claim fault. i have contacted ford, but have been told there is nothing they can or will do. *tr
