Today is thanksgiving. i drove home on tuesday night (two nights ago), a trip of approximately 500 miles from college to see my family. last night, as i put my 2003 ford taurus into drive in my church parking lot, i began to go forward and heard a gigantic "boom." i stopped the vehicle, and noticed that my front right tire was flat (a new, and expensive tire). after attempting to take the tire off, i discovered that my coil spring on my strut snapped and came through my tire. i have learned that this problem is not recalled, and i think, with it being so common and the part being junk, it should be recalled. i am going to the dealer tomorrow to try to resolve the problem. *tr
I have a 2003 ford taurus with 58,000 miles on it. i was in my garage and just started to back out when i heard a loud bang. the front left tire blew out. after pulling off the tire i discovered that the spring broke and punctured the tire. if i had bin going down the highway my 9 year old son and i could have been seriously injured or even killed. i went online and saw that hundreds of other ford taurus owners had the exact same problem with the springs snapping. this is a huge safety issue on a national scale. everyone on the websites are saying that ford had a recall until the 2001 model year. i put my vin # into the ford motor company's website and searched for a recall but nothing came up. it looks like they sold a defective product and are not stepping up to make their customer's whole. *tr
Recently purchased a 2003 ford taurus sedan se with 45,000 miles on it. i have put very few miles on it myself (about 3,000). today i discovered that the rear coil springs are both broken. i had a flat tire in the left rear and found that the coil spring has broken and cut the tire. the right coil spring must have been broken previously but did not cause any tire damage (that i know of). luckily the flat happened as i was exiting on an offramp from the highway. the coil springs will have to be replaced today to avoid continued problems (total cost $840 including new tire). *tr

Application of brakes causes car to shake and shimmy. rotors, pads and calipers replaced twice. replaced right front bearing, ball joint, sway bar link and half shaft the second time, do to bearing wear and squeak. none of the above has fixed this problem. it is especially bad when the brakes are being applied while going around a corner. *tr

Just pulled into my workplace in my 2003 ford taurus and all of a sudden a loud bang and the drivers side front end fell right on my tire. no prior warning whatsoever. the front drivers side spring had broken. i did have extended coverage but what a hassle with the insurance company to get them to pay which they finally did minus a $100.00 deductible. took 1 1/2 weeks to get it fixed and now something is wrong with the brakes. *tr
Broken front coil springs on 2003 taurus w/ about 49k miles. *tr
I was backing out of my garage, heard a loud crunching noise and a huge bang! my car was unable to go into reverse without pressure on the tire...i got out and the tire was blow out! i called the tow company and the technician felt under the car and said my coil spring has broken! he said it was a good thing it happened in my garage and not when i was going down the road!!! ford had a recall on 1999 - 2002 ford taurus cars but obviously the problem never got resolved on the 2003 cars! very frustrating and could have been very dangerous! ford and the dealership has done nothing to help! *tr
I was backing out of a parking space (got maybe an inch) and the car jolted slightly. i heard a loud popping noise followed by a puff of what seemed smoke. i got out of the car and saw my tire was flat. removed tire to find front drivers side coil spring had snapped in half and ripped a long deep line in tire. *tr

Front coil spring exploded, 2003 ford taurus. car was stopped in traffic lane. front tire rubbed on wheel well. inability to steer the vehicle. very dangerous. $900 to repair. i read of issues with 2003 and 2001 models. ford recalled 2001 models and apparently ford didn't fix this problem in time. where is the 2003 recall? *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2003 ford taurus. while backing out of the garage at approximately 5 mph, the contact heard a loud boom from underneath the front end of the vehicle. she was uncertain of what caused the noise. three months later, she took her vehicle to a tire shop for service. the mechanic stated that there was serious failure with the front coil spring. if the spring were to uncoil, it could slip through and cause great danger while driving. at that time, the tire was replaced, but the front coil spring was not repaired. the contact then took the vehicle to an independent mechanic. the mechanic stated that the failed coil spring must be replaced. six inches of steel was damaged due to the coil spring. the front passenger tire was replaced along with the front coil spring. she elected to purchase the quick strut part, which is the strut and coil spring combination manufactured by monroe. the total cost of the repair service was $376. the failure mileage was 32,100 and current mileage was 32,546. updated 06/02/08 *bf

I experienced a tire blowout (front left) while backing out of my driveway. upon attempting to remove the tire, it was discovered that the coil spring over that wheel had broken and punctured the tire. my local ford dealership replaced the spring (under warranty) but would not replace the front right spring because there was no recall. *tr
I heard from an acquaintance that there were several issues posted on the nhtsa website regarding the failure of coil springs on the ford taurus. i too experienced the complete loss of control of my 2003 taurus while driving in heavy traffic due to coil spring failure. with the initial jolt and subsequent dragging of the car to bring it to a safe area to bring the car to a stop, i actually thought i had hit a person or large object. when i got out of my car i found the the front end of the car sitting on top of my tire. my mechanic actually took pictures of the car as he could not believe the amount of damage that had occurred. i had to replace the struts, springs, sway bar links, lower ball joint and axle shaft. all of this at 61k miles!! for a cost of $1300.00. in closing, my 2003 ford taurus has been involved in 2 serious malfunctions posted to the nhtsa website which could have easily resulted in serious injury or death to myself or fellow motorists if i was not able to react quickly and control the car with a complete collapse of the front end or complete loss of power with the transmission failure (ref #fbn24-10467). both of these issues occurred within 4 months (5k miles) of each other (66k - 71k) and cost in excess of $4,000.0 to repair. given the number of coil spring complaints received by the nhtsa and the open investigation (nhtsa action number: ea08018) , i would think either ford or the national highway transportation safety administration take responsibility and issue a notification of these serious issues with this car (and the other year/models listed in nhsta action # ea08018)) and the steps to remediate those issues before the issue causes serious injury or death.
2003 ford taurus se wagon. was pulling out of our driveway and noticed that car was driving odd. got out and noticed that driver's front tire was flat. i did not notice the tire being flat before i moved the car. upon removing the tire it was determined that the driver's side front coil spring was broken, the tire sidewall was torn about half way around. upon further investigation it was found that other related parts are damaged. contacted ford and they said that they would do nothing to cover the cost of repairs. the vehicle has not been repaired yet. *tr

I was pulling out of a parking space. the front right coil spring broke and punctured the tire. it was an immediate failure with a loud explosion noise. the only thing that saved me from a major accident was that i was just starting up. at highway speeds, this would have been a serious accident. ford has refused to repair this problem. the car is a 2003 ford taurus. *tr

While backing out of drive way loud pop left front tire went flat removed tire and noticed coil spring broken it punctured tire. if it would have happened on the road could have caused serious injury. there is a recall but only to 2001 and this is a 2003 don't seem to be getting anywhere with ford on this. do we need a serious injury before they start a re call on later models. *nm
As i backed out of my paved driveway in my ford taurus (2003) ses i heard a pop and a hiss - apparently the front spring broke and damaged the tire. i know the 2000 - 2002 had a recall on this. i don't think the problem was solved on the 2003. *jb
This was the second time my ford taurus front spring failed, the first time was one year earlier. i was slowing down to pull into the driveway when i heard a loud noise, stopped, looked to see if i could find anything wrong, i couldn't tell, so i drove into the driveway and parked it. this one was the driver side. luckily this time it was only the spring and strut and not the tire also. the first time i was backing out of a parking spot and i heard a loud noise, that one ripped up the tire also. in both situations, i had it towed and repaired. when i called ford i was told that year wasn't covered under the recall, even though i argued that it was the same problem as the recalled ones. they wouldn't cover the repairs, so i had to pay for it myself. it makes no sense that it's the same exact problem as the recalled vehicles, yet they refuse to add a recall for this model year. *tr
I own a silver, 2003 ford taurus with 81,000 miles. as my wife was pulling out of the driveway she heard a loud pop and the car came to a screeching halt. she immediately called me on my cell phone to tell me that she had a flat tire on the drivers side of the vehicle. i came home and removed the flat tire to find out that the tire was completely punctured and ripped half way around the inside of the tire. i then placed the spare tire on the vehicle and drove it to discount tire company down the street who took one look at it and said that the spring was broken and that there was a recall from ford on this problem. when my wife found out that this could of cause serious damage to our family she was extremely upset. i did some research on the web and found out that there is only a recall on 2001 vehicles and not 2003 vehicles. nothing has been done to the car yet. it is still in the driveway waiting to be fixed. my wife and son are nervous driving a car with these kind of problems in the city or highway. *nm
Front drivers side coil spring snapped causing car to fall on tire. punctured tire, ruined strut and brake line. this happened while backing out of drive way, had this taken place while traveling down the road it would have easily killed or injured everyone in the car. there was no indication leading up to this that this would happen. after searching the internet i am finding that this is a common issue with the ford taurus, something needs to be done. *nm
