2002 ford taurus front coil spring fractured causing damage to the tire. *kb *jb
1.) left rear coil spring broke in two places. vehicle only has 46,000 miles, is less than 5 years old, has always been garage kept, has never towed and rarely has passengers in the back seat. i thought i had something loose moving around in my trunk. i emptied everything out of the trunk and still had a noise in the rear of the vehicle. i crawled underneath the vehicle and saw the broken spring. 2.) i called the dealer to find out what it would cost to replace the spring. a serviceman at the dealership suggested that it would be best to replace both springs, struts and upper mounts. i was quoted a price of $603.00 parts & labor plus $82.90 for a 4 wheel alignment. 3.) i checked with a wear master shop i've used for repairs for years and was able to get the suggested repairs done for $677.67 tax included. these are with quality moog & monroe products that have a lifetime warranty. repairs were made and i do have the old parts. after researching this on the internet i see the nhtsa has a defects investigation (nhtsa action ea06002) for rear springs on these vehicles. *jb

Right from spring broke on my 2002 taurus wagon. i only moved it a few feet and the spring broke an punctured the tire. if this happened on the open highway i could not comprehend the results. *jb
I backed the car out of the garage in the morning and left it in the driveway the entire day. around 9:30 pm i proceeded to move the car back into the garage. i moved no more than three feet when the passenger side front tire ruptured. aaa came to change the tire but was unable to remove it as the front coil spring was embedded in the side wall of the tire. the side wall was sliced about 10 inches in length. the car was towed to the ford dealership the next day. the service center at the dealership informed me that the coil spring had broken and that the car was not covered by an earlier recall for the same problem. both front coil springs and passenger side front tire will be replaced. *jb
In 2006, i had a flat rear-driver's side tire. i took it to be repaired at discount tire, in plainfield il. the mechanic promptly told me, after he had affixed the repaired tire, that i had two broken rear springs. he then told me to contact ford, as the taurus had been having problems with that particular problem. i was not in an accident or had any other problem with the car that would cause that to happen. i phoned ford in plano, il. then following day, and was told that my particular vehicle was not covered by ford for that problem. i think that this is a problem that ford should fix, as i have done nothing to cause it! *tr
Dt*: the contact stated that the vehicle was parked in the driveway when a loud noise was heard. upon inspection of the vehicle, there was air observed coming out of the left front tire. the front suspension coil spring had fractured and had pushed the tire off the bead, knocking it out of the rim, and puncturing a 2 inch hole into the tire. the dealer was notified, who advised the contact to get the code parts.
Failure of left front spring, resulting in puncture of tire on a 2002 ford taurus, purchased in pennsylvania. i have noted that there has been a recall of the 1999, 2000 and 2001 ford taurus models for exactly the same front spring failure on cars sold in northern states (including pennsylvania). *nm
Fractured coil spring on 2002 ford taurus, resulting in punctured tire and costly repairs not covered under recall. this is a common and dangerous problem in the ford taurus and should be subject of a recall immediately. ford recalled earlier model years but refuses to extend the recall to 2002 and beyond. *nm
I bought my 2002 taurus sel dohc in march of 2005 with 19,000 miles on it from autofair ford in manchester, nh. i live in a salty area in the winter, but i clean the underside of my car often. it is my daily driver and the car now has 41,000 miles on it, all highway. about 2 weeks ago, i was driving down the road , going around a corner at about 35 mph when my car made a loud snap noise from the drivers side rear wheel. i pulled over and examined the car, and everything seemed to be alright. the rear end was slightly sagging, but taurus' are known to have low back ends.. i figured i can over a stick at a funny angle or something. about a week later, last thursday, the car made the noise again, this time it sounded like the whole car made the noise, and i could feel it in the steering wheel. i pulled the car over again, got out, and the camber on both of the rear wheels was on the toes (the top was bent in), and the rear end was so low i couldn't fit a finger in between the top of the fender and the wheel. i drove 1 mile home, jacked the passenger side rear wheel up, and when i took the wheel off to my surrprise the spring was all rusted and it had snapped. the jagged edge was literally centimeters from my tire, thank god it did not happen on the highway or it may have punctured the tire and caused a blowout. i could have been seriously injured. i put the wheel back on, took the drivers side rear wheel off, and again the spring was snapped in two. this side, at the snap the jagged edge next to the tire was rusted, so this spring must have been the first to snap. i was driving with a broken spring which nearly punctured my rear tire for over a week. both rear springs broke, they were clearly defective and they must be recalled. what is it going to take, a rear spring on a taurus to snap on the highway, cause a blowout, and kill somebody? actions needs to be taken in order to prevent this from happening. *nm
Sunday morning, june 25, 2006 i found my 2002 ford taurus in my garage leaning to the left front drivers side. upon close inspection i found that the left front coil spring had snapped and punctured the left front tire. since i work on sunday i was forced to try and find some place to fix the car. the only place i could find within reasonable towing distance could not repair the car until the next day necessitating me getting a rental car to go to work. the cost of the tow, rental car and repair (which consisted of replacing both springs, struts, damaged tire and front end alignment approached $800. ford has a recall on the 1999 to 2001 ford taurus for this exact problem. i have seen numerous reports of people with the 2002 model having the exact same problem as i have had but ford's recall only covers up to model year 2001.*jb

Front coil spring on my 2002 ford taurus broke, and flatten the front tire. this happen on tues. june 6, 2006, at 6:45 a.m. i was backing out of my driveway. at this point my front end in on the driveway, while the rest of the car was in the street. it was my turn to drive the 5 person carpool, so fortunately this happened when it did, and not while i was on the thruway driving four people. *jb

I have a 2002 taurus with the coil spring problem. the owner before had the front springs replaced, yet i also had the rear end ones snap! not only did it snap but it also bent the struts on the rear end. they had a safety recall on the 1998-2001 and in 2003 they came out with stronger springs...but what about the 2002 taurus? i have been calling them for a week now and they will not stand behind their cars. i have googled it and pulled hundreds of postings with people having this happen. i think its wrong that they are not standing behind the cars. i hope you can help the taurus owners with this before this kills someone. *jb
Driving along a smooth road when the right front coil spring broke. stabilizer arm broken, cv boot required replacement. this is a 2002 taurus with 95 k. on calling ford, was informed that recall only covered up to 2001, but customer reps could not explain why the recall ended when the problem obviously has not been rectified. *jb
2002 ford taurus with 76,000 miles coil and strut broke and punctured large whole in front driver side wheel. pulling foward at low speed and then backing out of driveway when failure occurred. failure corrected by replacing both front coils and springs, two new front tires, alignment and labor totaling $800. 1998-2001 models had a recall to place a shield on springs which they know break and cause flat tires. my vehicle was not under recall but had it had the shield, i would not have had to replace my front tires. *jb

Front and rear coil springs broke in 2006. the front spring broke and went through the side wall of the left front tire. had to be towed to the ford dealership. cost was around 450.00 with every thing. then in 2007 or 2008 the rear coil springs broke and had to be changed along wit the struts . and that bill was also around 400.00 to 450.00. and it has never stopped it eats front tires up like it's candy. this car is like a money pit. *tr

Drivers side coil spring failed puncturing the drivers side tire side wall. fracture point of the spring has oxidation approximately 60% through. it appears to have been cracked for awhile. luckily this happened while still in the driveway and slow moving. there were no accidents or off-road travel prior to the break that we are aware of, however we did purchase the vehicle used. the drivers side tire is totally unusable. the tire was gouged and ripped along the sidewall since the car was moving at the time and will need replacement. i will be contacting the dealer as soon as they open this morning. *jb

Driving on the street from my house when i heard a loud metal on metal sound and smelled burning rubber. i then pulled over to side of the road and proceeded to look at the tires and underneath the car. i could not tell what was wrong, but my son was able to see that the front suspension had given way on the drivers side. i then had the car towed to my repair shop and it turned out that the front coil spring had snapped causing the front of the car to drop, resulting in a broken sway bar link and a severely damaged tire. the owner of the repair shop contacted the local ford dealership who stated that the recall did not include model year 2002. when i picked up the car the technician/owner of my repair shop informed me of the recall that ford has for model years 1999-2001, and even though my car is a 2002, to file a complaint with ford for parts/labor reimbursement and nhtsa for investigation due to an increase in 2002 cars experiencing the same failure as the recall no:nhtsa campaign id number: 04v332000. *jb
While my wife was driving home from work, the driver's side front coil spring snapped, causing the puncture and blowout of the front driver's side tire. i had the unit repaired at my local repair shop, where i learned of recalls for the same problem for 2000 and 2001 models of my car. further research determined that there was no no recall issued for my vehicle, based on vin #, although the date of manufacture was jan 2002. the recalls issued in the past were only for northern states, which would apply to me here in ny. the dealer reimbursed me for the cost of one coil spring replacement, which i used to replace the passenger's side unit, but would not reimburse for the cost of the tire. it would seem that the issue ford was having on their 2000 and 2002 models is still prevalent on at least the early year 2002's. i am still in possession of the broken part. *nm

I have a 2002 ford taurus on which the left rear coil spring fractured and punctured the left tire. *nm
I own a 2002 ford taurus that i have been happy with until yesterday. the front spring broke and punctured my tire. when i brought it in for repairs i was informed that the back spring was cracking as well and numerous repairs were needed. the total of all the repairs needed was $2400. after looking into this i found that there have been recalls issued on prior years models. i have also found that many owners have had this same problem with their 2002 taurus'. obviously sufficient changes have not been made on the 2002 models to prevent this problem, but yet there is no recall on this model. i hate to think about what would have happened had i been on the express way where i do most of my driving. *jb
