We have classified the 153 complaints from 2002 Ford Taurus about SUSPENSION into the following categories.
On 12-17-2008 i drove my 2002 ford taurus out of my driveway. after driving approximately 300 yards i smelled rubber burning. returned car to driveway and noticed left front to be setting much lower than normal. car was towed to mechanic (firestone) and left front spring and strut were broken. i was told this is a common problem for taurus. replaced both front springs, struts, sway bar links and left front tire (spring tore into tire) plus a front end alignment. cost = $1400. i was lucky because this car is driven mostly on the interstate at highway speeds. something needs to be done before someone is killed or hurt! *tr
While backing out of my driveway (12/17/08), the driver's side/front of my 2002 ford taurus simply collapsed. the front coil spring had completely snapped dropping the front vehicle structure onto the tire. a jagged coil spring piece had also ripped a large gash into the interior sidewall of the tire resulting in an immediate loss of all tire pressure. the repair resulted in replacement of the front coil spring pair (passenger side coil spring was corroded and in very poor mechanical condition), a sway bar link, strut mount, and new tire (total cost-$600). additionally, i needed a rental car to get to work during the repair period (additional $132). due to the catastrophic nature of the tire failure, if this incident had occurred at highway speed, i suspect that severe injury/death could have been a possible outcome. *tr
I was coming to a stop light when i heard a loud bang noise. i put the car in park and looked around the car but at this time saw no damage. i was a block from home so i drove home. at this point i did notice the front end was low, so i jacked the car up and saw the spring was broken. upon breaking it also snapped in half a sway bar and damaged the tire. all i can say is i was lucky. i drive the expressway every day, if it would of happened then i could be dead or could have killed someone else or both. *tr
Broken coil on front passengers side ripped open the tire. *tr
My fiancee's 2002 ford taurus sel front driver side coil spring broke and tore the whole inner sidewall off of the tire. the coil spring broke while the car was sitting in the driveway over night and thankfully my fiancee was just pulling out of the driveway when she noticed the tire halfway off the rim. had the coil spring broke on the highway she may not be alive today. i spoke to ford and they were unable to offer us any assistance. the vehicle is only 7 years old and only has 115k miles on it. there is a recall already in effect for 2001 models that have the exact same issue. i have the broken coil spring in my possession if in the case an investigator would like to examine the faulty part. *tr
Rear springs snapped in 2002 ford taurus. causing the spring to slide into the side of the tire. spring has signs of rust pitting, possibly causing the stress of the spring to snap. *tr
My wife was backing the car out of the garage and the front drivers side tire popped. after removing the tire i noticed the coil spring had broken and went into the tire. we called two ford dealerships and they told us this was not covered or under recall. we had the car towed and new coil springs and a new tire put on at our expense. i did a search on line and this has been a problem on earlier ford taurus with a recall on 1999-2001 models. *tr
Front right spring snapped on my 2002 ford taurus while backing out of the driveway. blew a hole in the tire as well. *tr
Driving and smoke began coming out of the driver's front of car. loud bang. coil punctured tire. almost had accident. *tr
My 2002 ford taurus front left spring/strut broke and punctured my tire. i have to admit i'm very grateful that my daughter had put the car in reverse to back out of the driveway when this event took place. she is safe. but this is a serious issue! when i looked for information on a recall on-line, there are many people with this same make that have experience the same results. i insist on buying american, please don't tell me it's no longer safe to buy american. please investigate this for others safety as well as my families. *tr

Driving about 45 mph when i heard a loud pop and my vehicle swerved to the side of the road. the car would not move and i had to have it towed to the repair shop. they observed that the front driver side spring had broke and cut my driver side tire in half and also damaging front struts and additional suspension parts. he thought ford would pay for repairs since he has had this happen before and it was covered. ford informed him 2002 vehicles were not covered and they would pay nothing. this is a very dangerous defect and could have caused a serious accident had there been a car in the lane next to me when it happened. ford needs to take responsibility for this defect since a internet search of this problem has revealed hundreds of identical incidents. it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured or killed due to this defect!!! in the meantime i am out over $1000.00 for repairs and am scared to drive this vehicle on the highway for fear that i won't be so lucky next time!!!!! *tr
Backing out of garage heard a noise, left front tire went flat. inspection found the tire was torn from a broken front coil spring. replaced both front coil springs and suspension sway bar links. this could have been a disaster if it would have happened while driving at highway speeds. *tr

Drivers side spring busted in half ripping the tire apart....when we went to put the spare on the coil dropped off hitting the pavement barely drove it to firestone with the coil hitting the spare tire. this happened while in the driveway when i was ready to go to work. firestone also found the back passenger suspension coil also cracked and a bad hazard. i had to have all four suspension coils replaced along with the sway bars and a wheel alignment. i was lucky to have it bust apart in the driveway and not on the highway i was very lucky. this was a costly repair....... *tr updated 02/04/09. *lj

2002 ford taurus has a broken rear strut and spring. i noticed on a variety of blogs/forums that this was/is a common problem and is potentially dangerous. i have not repaired yet and have not contacted ford yet but intend to do so. *tr
Rear coil spring broke sometime during 2006 or 2007 which caused the rear end of car to sag and vehicle did not handle as well after words. during the summer of 2008 my car slide off the highway while driving 50mph during a rain storm. i always wondered if it could have been due to the broken coil spring. luckily i wasn't hurt and there was no accident because i slide into a grassy field. this fall 2009 i replaced the rear struts and springs and now my vehicle handles much better. *tr
My wife was backing out of the driveway with the kids in the back seat when a loud bang occurred. it appears that the drivers side spring had been broken for a short period of time because it was rubbing a groove into the side wall of the tire. the loud bang must have been the passenger side breaking. the passenger side would have punctured the tire quickly if my wife continued to drive. i haven't repaired the failure yet. *tr
2002 taurus ses - front coil spring broke while parked at work. *tr
Strut broke on 2002 ford taurus, which in turn punctured tire causing the tire to shred, ford has recalled this in the 2001 series but not in 2002, yet it seems to be the same issue and have impacted many people in the same manor, so why no recall on this years model. it makes no sense to me. now this repair will cost over 700.00 to fix (including tire replacement), seems to me (from what i read) that the recalls are based in part on the impact to safety, had this blow out occurred at a high rate of speed on a highway for example, it could have been a tragedy, why is ford not recalling this proactive to avoid a disaster, rather than what appears to me they are waiting for disaster before reacting (in my opinion of course). *tr
Ford taurus 2002 front spring coil snaps and punctures front tires. luckily the car was parked otherwise the incident could have led to severe injury and possibly death. *tr
2002 ford taurus front drivers side spring broke driving the spring into the front tire. *tr

Bought 2002 ford taurus sel from used car lot, had about 43,000+ miles in excellent condition. i have had this car less than a year. it presently has 68,000 miles (700 miles driven weekly), all highway driving. at about 55,000 miles ( i am guessing), i started hearing a clunk. today i went to change the brakes and found the drivers side rear suspension low to the tire. i carry no weight in the car. i took the tire off to find the spring had snapped and coiled around the strut perch. the car has not been abused or mistreated. i find it strange that this car would snap a spring so easily in such a sort time. luckily it didn't pop a tire while driving. i have read up on the internet to find this is a known problem for this year and make car. i have also read, that i should expect the front struts to collapse. i feel ford should be held accountable for selling a car with known dangerous and potential problems. there should be a recall on these vehicles for a potentially dangerous and faulty suspension. i have also been forced to replace the blower motor to the cars hvac system. the system has been working intermittently. i have read on the net that this also is a known ford problem. i am fortunate that i am a federally licensed airplane mechanic, therefore i do my own repairs. the parts in question are not cheap, nor is my time. ford needs to be forced to reimburse all expenditures to repair these known problems. ford needs to recall and address these known problems. *tr
My 2002 ford taurus station wagon, broken coil spring on front shredded tire, had to replace both springs, strut and tire. i understand there was a recall on years 1999-2001, but from what i've discovered, it should have been extended for the 2002 models as well. *tr
I have investigated and discovered an updated customer satisfaction program 03m02 - supplement regarding additional coverage for front coil springs on my 2002 ford taurus. however, i am unable to get any satisfaction from ford as to how to claim this. my original odi confirmation number is: 10234221. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2002 ford taurus. the contact took his vehicle to the dealer because the check engine light illuminated on the instrument panel. he was informed that the rear coil spring failed. the contact paid $350 for the repair; however, his extended warranty paid for some of the repair costs. the failure mileage was 55,000. updated 09/16/08. *lj updated 09/18/08. *jb
I was having my tire rotated and balanced when the mechanic showed my that i had a cracked rear drivers coil spring that was broke in two. the remaining spring was trapping the broken piece. the broken piece was sticking out from spring seat and had turned a groove into my tire. it was on the other tire as well. i rotate and balance every 3000-4000 mile, so this means that it happened between 70,000-74,000 miles. i will have to replace it quickly given it is very dangerous if the broken spring fragment should move and turn the tire to the point of failure or puncture it. *tr
