We have classified the 53 complaints from 2001 Ford Taurus about SUSPENSION into the following categories.
I bought my 2001 ford taurus used, in 2004 it has been a good car until 2008 when it started shaking in the front end. i took it to the mechanic and they told me it was a rack and pinion, so i had that replaced and paid through the nose. the car was still shaking, i took it back he said that i had to get it aligned because it was towed out and he did not have the equipment to do that. i replaced the now bald tired and had it aligned. still shaking and now worse, i am now unemployed and can not afford to take the car to the shop and the warranty on the mechanic i took it to is up and he says it is my responsibility to pay for him to look at it further. when i had it aligned they did tell me that the rods and the struts were fine. so what exactly could this be? after 40 mph the steering wheel shakes like crazy and there is a whirling noise coming from the wheels. please help. *tr
I noticed that after installing four brand new tires on my 2001 ford taurus, that the vehicle pulled to the right dramatically while driving. the alignment was just done as well. i also noticed that the rear of the vehicle sat extremely low. further investigation found that the rear coil spring on the right side had snapped at the base of strut. front springs have a recall, why not the front. i am aware of the problems on this subject as i am formerly a service advisor for ford. this is an all too common problem and does pose a safety problem!!!! this is true as the vehicle fails nysi and makes vehicle undriveable. ford will not repair, yet there are hundreds, if not thousands of the same exact concern. my vehicle is in perfect operating condition and cared for well. this should not happen! apparently until someone dies, ford and the government will not do anything about this. my 2001 impala and my 2002 cavalier both had well over 100k, never had this problem and they were in the salt states their entire operating lives!! there must be something done now please. i am forced to repair the vehicle at my own cost for something that is well known by the government and ford. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2001 ford taurus. while driving at any speed, the contact hears banging noises coming from the front and rear of the vehicle. the failure caused improper suspension issues in the vehicle. he took the vehicle to his local shop and the mechanic stated that both the front and rear coil springs failed. the dealer has not confirmed or denied whether the vehicle was previously repaired according to nhtsa campaign id number 04v332000 (suspension:front:springs:coil springs). the vehicle has not been repaired. the current and failure mileages were 75,000. updated 02/24/09. *lj updated 02/24/09. *jb
Rear coil springs break! i remember the recall for front coil springs. but why ford doesn't recall rear as they break as often as the front ones?? *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2001 ford taurus. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for repair service. the technician observed that the rear coil spring failed. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileages were 69,000. updated 020209 *bf updated 02/03/09.*jb
Right rear coil spring broke. the car has only 52,000 miles on it. if i hadn't noticed a piece of the coil spring on my garage floor, who knows what may have happened. this is my wife's car. we just had new tires and a four wheel alignment a month before the spring broke. *tr
2001 ford taurus with 69,000 miles has a broken rear coil spring. there is a problem with the front coils which ford will fix no charge under 04m04 customer satisfaction guarantee but it does not cover the rear springs. in the event of the back spring working it's way to the tire there has been rear tire blowouts with extensive damage to the vehicle itself and a danger to the driver and passengers. at this time my mother was informed that this was being looked into as a mandatory recall. i feel since they have had problems with the front and have acknowledged the defect that there is also a problem with the rear springs of those same years. parts required to correct problem are new coils both sides. we took it to the dealership and the service manager said he thinks there should be a mandatory recall but he did not have the authority to make that decision and referred me to you. the cost to my mother which is on a fixed budget is 600.00 and she cannot afford it. the service manger advised her to get it fixed before it caused numerous problems which would not be covered even though the damage occurred from the broken coil spring. at this time there has not been any dangerous occurrences but there are a possibility of them happening at any time. please look closer at this dangerous situation and make it mandatory to have ford motor company fix this problem. thank you brad farrow *tr
2001 ford taurus - both rear coil springs broke. *tr
At time of state inspection: rear drivers coil spring failure causing damage to rear tire. estimated @ $397 for the coil and labor, plus $125 for new tire. mechanic said rear passenger spring is not far behind. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2001 ford taurus. while driving less than 20 mph, the rear passenger side tire shredded. the vehicle was towed to a local mechanic. the rear coil spring snapped and punctured the tire. the mechanic also stated that the front coil springs were failing and advised the contact not to operate the vehicle. the mechanic stated that the vin was included in nhtsa campaign id number 04v332000. the manufacturer stated that they would not have to make repairs until the coil springs actually failed. the current and failure mileages were less than 88,000.
2001 ford taurus. consumer request a recall on rear coil springs on 2001 ford taurus and mercury sable vehicles *tgw the consumers son was involved in a fatal accident due to the failure of the rear coil springs. the driver, went off the left side of the road, but regained control of the vehicle, but suddenly he veered sharply to the left, toward the median which sloped downward and back up to the southbound lanes. the vehicle flipped and landed on its wheels and was stuck by a southbound trailer traveling at interstate speed. the impact to the passenger side of the vehicle killed the consumers son and the front passenger and left the rear passenger with serious injuries. updated 07/20/11 updated 08/24/11*jb updated 11/29/11. *jb
2nd request on behalf of constituents, requesting nhtsa not only recall the 2001 ford taurus but reopen a 2007 investigation re this matter, es have no rec of previous ltr fm sen. mcconnell but re es11-005500/s/ c.lieu *smd the consumer stated her brother and his friend died in a car accident, and a third passenger was injured, when the rear spring broke and caused him to loose control of the vehicle.
Tl*the contact owns a 2001 ford taurus. the contact stated that the rear coil springs failed and the front coil springs are weak. the dealer stated that they would not repair the front coil springs according to nhtsa campaign id number 04v332000 (suspension:front:springs:coil springs) until they have completely failed. they further stated that they would not assume financial responsibility for the rear coil springs because there was no recall for that component. the manufacturer did not assist. the failure mileage was 80,000 and current mileage was 106,000.
Went to my local ford dealer to take care of a recall notice i had received on my 2001 taurus for broken front springs. while the dealer took care of my front springs they also inspected the rear springs on the car. when they were finished they came out and told me the rear springs are cracked and needed to be replaced but were not covered under the recall. i work in the auto industry dealing with metal parts. i understand the process of heat treating metals and if ford was having problems with the front springs cracking and breaking due to bad heat treating, the rear springs from the same time period should be suspect and also part of the recall. *tr
I own a 2001 ford taurus. the front and rear coil springs have been replaced two times over the years. there was a recall on the front springs but none on the rear. my recent incident occurred in october. i had five kids in the car when the front coil broke off and ripped the tire. the cost to fix was $1,700. why hasn't there been a stronger demand for ford to fix this problem. searching the internet i know this is a widespread problem. *tr
We have a 2001 ford taurus that has a broken coil spring in rear of the car. the fractured piece of the spring is right beside the tire in the rear of the car. in addition to this danger when the spring broke it allowed the back of the car to set so far down that you can not even place 1 finger between the top of the tire and the fender weld now. the car would consistantly rub the tires if we try to drive it. i have called ford motor on several occasions about this problem and they told me that they had not had any other complaints about rear spring breakage so there was nothing they could do for me. now however after reading this website i see that i am in a class of owners with the same problems - i do live in ohio which after reading more on your site i realize that we are in the area that this problem seems to be happening to alot. after speaking to a local repair shop about my problems i was shocked to find out that rear coil spring breakage on these taurus's is one of the most seen problems in his shop. please continue your investigation - if it makes ford fix these problems and 1 life is saved - it would be worth all of the complaining and nagging we have had to do to get them to step up and repair their defective parts. *tr
I had my car inspected today and found out both rear springs on the struts were broken. when researching the problem, i've found out this is common in 2001 taurus sedans. this is a dangerous defect and i don't understand how a recall could be made for the front struts but not the back. a rear tire popping at 73 mph because of a broken spring breaking loose is just as dangerous as a front tire. *tr
Front & rear springs failed on 2001 ford taurus & were replaced. front springs also destroyed struts & were covered under a manufacturer warranty. rear springs also destroyed shocks but were not covered under warranty. ford dealer indicated that this failure was "common" on this model year. *tr
Inspection of suspension on my 2001 ford taurus by tire shop on 11 oct 08 revealed both rear springs are broken. internet sites list numerous incidents of tires being punctured by broken springs. i guess not enough people have died in order to force ford to recall this very dangerous condition? you would think ford or the news media would inform the public about this potentially fatal defect. i really can't think of a more serious condition that would justify an organization like yours. thank you dan archer *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2001 ford taurus. the contact's vehicle did not pass state inspection because both rear coil springs failed. he is in the process of notifying an authorized dealer and the manufacturer to determine the cause of the failure. the failure and current mileages were 61,000. updated 10/16/08 *bf updated 10/20/08. *jb
I have a 2001 ford taurus ses sdn. i looked on fords web site for recalls and to my surprise there where none for rear suspension coil springs, this is the 4th coil spring that has broken on this car and i have only had the car for 4 years. i just drive to and from work with this many breaks there has to be some kind of engineering or parts defect, this should not even be happening , i could see it if i hauled stuff in the car over a period of time again i just drive. i see you have done an investigation and closed your case last year. i tell you that there are alot of other one's that had to been breaking i am sure that none of my 4 have reached your complaints or any other complaints. i am partially disabled and i can not afford $300 - $400 dollar car bills to get this fixed every time it breaks down.. ron paul *tr
2001 ford taurus rear coil springs broke on both sides. very common complaint on this car although ford won't issue a recall. they have issued a recall for the front coil springs but refuse to do the same for the rear. *tr
I have a 2001 ford taurus ses. about 5 months ago (~90 k miles) my front passenger side spring broke. the spring was replaced under recall. yesterday (~103 k miles), i found the rear driver side coil spring also cracked open and hanging very near to the tire. this car drives 98% on i-94 at a speed of 75mph. thank god the broken spring did not pop my tire open. dealer checked and found both the rear springs broken. a $385 estimate is given for just replacing the spring (not the struts). i checked on the internet and found this is a very common problem in taurus. ford should come forward and put a recall on the rear springs too. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2001 ford taurus. the contact stated that both rear coil springs fractured. one of the rear corners of the vehicle was leaning extremely low. through online research, he discovered various complaints for the same issue from other consumers. the spring also became dislodged from its normal position. he has not taken the vehicle to the dealer; however, the manufacturer stated that there was no recall on the rear springs and offered no assistance. the current mileage was 129,735 and failure mileage was approximately 129,600.
Rear coil spring broke and nearly cut the tire. *tr
Both rear coil springs on our 2001 ford taurus sel rusted through and broke. the broken coil springs then fell down past the spring seat and the jagged, broken edge of the springs cut the inner side wall of both rear tires. the right rear tire blew out as a result of this while we were traveling 35 miles per hour. both rear tires needed to be replaced. fortunately no one was injured. this is a safety hazard! if this would have happened at highway speed or while in a curve, this could have been a terrible accident! please make ford install coil spring seat extensions and new coil springs on the rear of these cars to prevent the coil springs from falling into the tire area, this was done on the front coil springs for this car and should also be done on the rear before someone gets terribly injured or killed! please do not wait until then to do something! this could be prevented! i am also mailing you a letter describing this problem with photos of the tires, springs, etc. *tr updated 09/08/08. *jb
Car appeared to lower in the back end than it should be. taken to repair shop. diagnosed with broken spring which was rubbing rear tires needing 2 new tires. car has only 75,000 miles. cost over $1000. *tr
While on vacation, driver side rear spring broke, causing driver side rear strut to break. had to replace both rear springs and struts. car currently has only 31,000 miles on it. *tr
Vehicle (2001 ford taurus se) failed safety inspection because both rear coil springs are. fortunately, there was no accident involved because this problem was caught during a safety inspection. *tr
Three of the four springs on our 2001 ford taurus are broken at under 100 thousand miles. the car has never been abused. the broken spring can puncture tire at highway speeds. *tr
The events leading up to the failure were not fatal and there wasn't a crash. i was driving and began to hear a rubbing noise in the back tire of my car. when i took the wheel off to inspect the damage the rear coil spring had broke and was rubbing a groove into my tire. i then had to replace both rear springs and both rear tires. i recently took my car into have the rear brakes replaced and was told the springs were once again broken and had to be replaced. i'm have now paid close to $1000 on faulty spring and repair. *tr
I have a 2001 ford taurus and the rear coil springs are broken. have seen many complaints about this and there should be a recall on this. *tr
I had 3 broken coil springs on my car at one time. i learned there was a recall on the front coil springs, but not on the back. i have also learned that the cause of the fault on the coil springs was salt on the road, which is what caused my front and rear coil springs to break. i believe there should be a recall on the rear coil springs, as well as the front. i called ford's complaint department, and they said this would not be changed. then, i had broken shock absorbers, which my ford garage told me was a result of the coil springs. so not only did i have to pay for the rear coil springs, but i also have to pay to repair the shock absorbers! the garage manager said he has had numerous cases like this -- in fact, he had two in the shop in the same week. *tr
Rear springs snapped destroying both tires. both left and right rear springs and struts and both rear tires had to be replaced. *tr
I purchased a 2001 taurus brand new in 2001. when i got my car inspected in 2008 the inspector informed me that there were 4 broken springs on my car! one on each wheel! it would not pass inspection. so far i have not been able to afford to repair the problem. the estimate to repair the problem is $1200! *tr
Put car in reverse and began to move when spring on drivers side front broke and punctured tire. *tr
2001 ford taurus. back (rear) suspension springs broke. ongoing issue with this make and model. extremely dangerous as the broken springs can puncture the tire and ultimately cause physical and/or property harm. the front springs had a recall on them related to this issue however, not the rear springs. this is so dangerous and very common according to two different repair shops of this make and model. *tr
Back springs broke and almost punctured a tire. we had to pay to have the springs replaced on the rear. if everyone was aware of the potential danger with the front springs why weren't the back springs also included in the safety recall? i think this is something someone should look into because this is also a safety issue. it is very unfair to have to pay for something that ford should have taken care of. my taurus has less than 75,000 miles on it and i'm wondering what other possible safety issues i have to look forward to. *tr
Daughter was driving car and heard funny rattling noise in front end when going over bumps. i checked out the front end and found the front driver's side coil spring was broken. while getting that fixed the driver's side rear coil spring was found to be broken also! *tr
As i was backing out of my driveway, i heard a sound from my car's rear end. after i turned around and returned home i smelled burning rubber and noticed pieces of rubber inside the wheel. i removed the wheel and saw that the strut spring had broken and was rubbing the inside sidewall of the tire away. if this had occurred on the highway, it very well could have been fatal. luckily i was in the neighborhood or my daughter was not driving. this is an extremely severe safety hazard that occurs without warning and will produce an uncontrollable car. i contacted the local ford dealer and also called ford's customer service hotline but they will do nothing about this hazard or will they help in the repair. the front springs were under a recall but i didn't know this until one of these failed. ford replaced the front springs after this happened. from looking at this site, there seems to be a problem with this component. *tr
Rear suspension coils snapped in half requiring a complete replace of rear suspension. *tr
I was getting a routine oil change when the repair man said that both of my rear coil springs were broken on my '01 ford taurus. he mentioned that a broken rear coil spring can puncture tires and lead to accidents. he further explained that it would cost roughly $1400 to replace the coil springs and shocks and all the fittings etc.. i had never heard this severe of a problem with a vehicle that has less than 100k. i further did research on the issue to find thousands of complaints and the best that ford will say about it is, "it has not caused any serious accidents." i cannot believe that we have to wait for someone to be seriously injured or worse before a company owns up to the problem and takes care of it. i will surely not buy another ford vehicle if this is the way they do business. *tr
Rear spring broke, only 57,000 miles on my 2001 taurus. mechanic claimed you need to replace both - cost is $1033!! *tr
Left rear spring broke and punctured tire on my mothers 2001 ford taurus. *tr
Rear coil springs have broken causing damage to tire. extremely hazardous. *tr
Rear coil spring of my 2001 ford taurus has broken and making contact with the tire. the tire is damaged all around it,and the car was making noise when i checked it myself i found out that its the spring that is broken, know i have to fix it and buy a new tire, because the tire is badly damaged ,if i did not check it ,it could have been a probable accident due the tire puncture. i think ford has to pay for it. *tr
Rear coil spring broke on right rear 2001 taurus damaging tire. *tr
i had to replace the both front coil springs on a 2001 ford taurus. the left front had broken. the car did have the shields installed as per the recall. ford has done nothing to help with the cost. the car has 72,000 miles . *tr
The rear of my 2001 ford taurus has dropped. *tr
had both front coil springs covered under ford recall but also had left and right rear coil spring fractures not covered under recall. rear coils replaced and installed for $415.13. there should be a recall on the rear coil springs as well... *tr
