As i was traveling the rear spring snapped and started to gouge into the tire and cut the tire on the top corner sidewall where the steel belts are now showing also heated up so fast that i was not able to take off the lug nuts of the tire to see what was wrong. this is a common problem according to multiple ford dealership service advisors and it could be fatal if the tire explodes. ford claims there is not enough complaints to order a recall for a potential fatal flaw in the car. *tr

I was driving car at the speed of 40 and suddenly some sound came from left wheel. i saw around and found spring coil broken and that coil is rubbing the tyre. *tr

Extensive corrosion on the engine cradle may impact its structure and failure can impact suspension and steering. *tr

While driving my 2001 ford taurus ses today at city speeds (30 mph) i heard a very loud metallic clanking sound. i drove straight home and we put the car on the lift to inspect. we found the front left coil spring was broken from what appears to be rust/corrosion. we live in illinois & called ford to see about the recall (04v332-4235) and how to go about repairing this. the agent checked our vin and told us that our car did not qualify for this recall despite having been produced in the chicago manufacturing plant, which is one of the plants involved in the recall. our tire was very close to being shredded by the broken spring and could have caused a very serious accident. i believe our car should be a part of this recall and stated to the ford agent that i was dissatisfied by the apparent runaround i was receiving. i requested a formal complaint to be made, and he stated he would place my complaint in their database. if he actually did, i have no idea. all cars produced in the time frame at the chicago plant should be included in this recall. i will not buy another ford product again due to this issue. *tr

During multipoint inspection dealer found rear springs broken total cost of repair $572.58 . your data base shows this has been a defective part issue and no recall. local dealer not aware of rear spring issue. *tr

The front, left coil spring broke leaving a jagged edge that shredded the tires sidewall when the car was put in reverse. i do not know exactly when the spring broke, but i was driving on the freeway prior to parking the vehicle. had this happened on the freeway, the results could have been disastrous. the tire that was shredded was a near new studded snow tire. the total cost to repair the suspension and replace the tire will be about 400 - 500 dollars. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2001 ford taurus. the contact stated that the driver was driving 45 mph when the front driver's coil spring fractured. the vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop and the coil spring was repaired. an authorized dealer was then notified and stated that the vehicle was no longer covered under the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 04v332000 (suspension:front:springs:coil springs). the manufacturer offered no assistance. the failure mileage was 105,000. ..updated 09-19-12 *bf updated 09/20/2012 *js

Front passenger coil spring fractured. this was an item that was covered by recall 04m04. the fix was to install a cheap plate to prevent the coil spring from puncturing the tire when it cracks. the recall included a prevision to replace a broken spring if the vehicle was in service less than 10 years or less than 150,000. i am disappointed that the corrective action was not to fix the coil spring itself before it would break. *js

We were pulling into a parking lot when we heard a loud "klunk". from that point on we always heard during left turns. the next day, i had my mechanic look at the car and the rear springs had broken. he said that it was good to get it in. $600.00 bill. this needs to be a recall! people have died. *tr

Rear spring broke and killed rear tire, almost people in the car. *tr

2001 ford taurus ses left front spring snapped. this was discovered at ~95,000 miles and 10 weeks after the ford extended recall program expired. the end of the spring was sitting in the small well at the bottom of the spring and the broken end was very rusty. about 3" snapped off the top end of the spring. online research indicates this is a very common problem and many people report that the spring punctures a tire and causes suspension and frame damage. i will need to have the springs, along with the struts, bushings, etc. replaced. both of my rear springs were also broken and were replaced (at my own expense) in may, 2010. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2001 ford taurus. the contact stated that the drivers side coil spring broke and punctured the drivers side tire when he was driving 5 mph. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where it was awaiting repair. the contact referenced recall 04v332000 (suspension:front:springs:coil springs) but was told by the dealer that they would not cover the replacement of the springs. the contact called the manufacturer; however, they offered no assistance. the current and failure mileage was 146,750.

Drove the car normally, and it does have some mileage on it, but upon reading online i see that this is a very common failure. failure: rear strut springs cracking or breaking into multiple pieces. i can see where parts where out, but they should not break. rear spring broke and damaged tire (sidewall). if i had been going faster, say highway speeds this could have resulted in a pretty significant accident. i was lucky. there is clearly a defect with such a high number of these springs breaking. thanks [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Front suspension shock broke, coil spring ruptured tire. *tr

Today found out that my 2001 ford taurus (about 76k) rear right breaking coil springs broken during a service. the broken spring almost touch the tire. i was lucky it did not broke the tire. i was told to replace both rear springs and would cost more than $1000 dollars. it is a safe issue. *tr

There was very little warning to the failure. the vehicle drove fine until one day it developed a clunk in the front that was worse than the several that were already there. about this same time the steering began to feel sloppy as well. when i looked under the car the front sub-frame was rusted to the point where the a-arm disconnected itself from the sub-frame. the front of the a-arm is now floating free. this is the cause of the steering slop. the only way to fix this problem is to replace the entire sub-frame. this is the frame that holds the engine, transmission and suspension to the vehicle. the vehicle is no longer safe to drive. *tr

I don't know what lead up to the failure of my strut springs on my 2001 ford taurus. i had not hit any potholes, had any extreme weight in the back, or any other issues that could have caused this to happen. i am a fairly good driver with a great driving record. upon replacing my back brakes i was told about my strut springs being broke and they needed to be fixed immediately. the springs had not be broken for very long before having them replaced. the parts alone were $300 (not including labor, the springs are currently being replaced) and due to the broken springs i had to replace both back tires at $100 a piece. an alignment may need to be done now also. the old parts/springs should be available. *tr

Ford has recalled the front suspension springs on my 2001 ford taurus 80000 miles. but my rear spring fractured and nearly caused an accident with my four children in the car. i feel if the front springs are faulty then the backs are just as dangerous!! *tr

Front coil broke when i was driving. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2001 ford taurus sel. the contact stated that the passenger side rear coil spring broke and punctured the rear passenger side tire while driving approximately 45 mph. the vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer where it was being repaired. the contact called the manufacturer who stated that there was a recall on the front coil springs but not the rear springs. the current and failure mileages were approximately 76,000.

I took my 2001 ford taurus to a local dealer to have a mandatory state inspection performed. the service advisor informed me that one of the rear coil springs was cracked and he said both rear coil springs need to be replaced immediately. i was told to stop driving the vehicle because the broken spring could puncture a tire, causing an accident. new rear coil springs were ordered and will be installed by the dealer on 6/23/10. i will ask to keep the old parts. my car was part of the 04s17 recall for the front coil springs. shields were installed below the front springs on 5/10/05, at 44,356 miles. the rear coil springs were not included in this recall, but maybe they should have been. *tr

Both rear springs are broke. *tr

While driving on a city road my 2001 ford taurus had a blowout on the lr tire. the coil spring was broken in several places which caused part of the spring to gouge the inside wall of the rear tire. had to replace both rear coil/shock assembly in the vehicle. *tr

1.right rear coil spring broke going through the tire. 3.rear spring and tire will be replaced, old part is available. *tr

Rear springs broke while moving in driveway. what would have happened if i was at speed on the highway? should have lasted longer than 72,000 miles. i take good care of this car and had planned to keep it a long time. *tr

Both rear springs broken on a 2001 ford taurus ses. while rotating tires, the mechanic noticed that both rear springs were snapped. two new struts with springs were installed at a cost of over $700. the parts are not available, however, i personally saw the left rear spring in the car before it was replaced. *tr

Passenger rear shock mount failed letting the shock stick through to the inside of car beside rear seat. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2001 ford taurus. while having the vehicle serviced for an oil change, the contact was informed the passenger side rear coil spring was broken. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer but was not serviced because there was not a recall for the rear coil springs. the contact stated his vehicle had previously been serviced for the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number: 04v332000 (suspension: front: springs: coil springs) but the recall did not include the rear coil springs. the contact also stated that he had his rear driver side coil spring replaced because it too was broken in the past. the failure and current mileages were 88,000. updated 6/19/10 *cn updated 07/22/10*jb

Vehicle is a 2001 ford taurus with a rear coil spring breakage issue. with not just a single broken spring. both rear coil springs are broken resulting in a considerable safety issue. both coil springs broke in the same part of the coil. very costly suspension repairs. *tr

Vehicle is a 2001 ford taurus with a rear coil spring breakage issue. with not just a single broken spring. both rear coil springs are broken resulting in a considerable safety issue. i have managed to catch this problem before having the misfortune of having to replace both rear tires. i am a certified state inspector for the state of pennsylvania and i don't know about you guys but i see this as being a very dangerous and a pricey repair problem that has seemed to be happening quite often in the ford taurus 2001 model. im currently aware that ford recalled the front springs but it seems that the rear springs are exactly the same. there is definitely a durability issue with the front springs and it seems rear springs are made up of the same materials resulting in identical breakage and the rear coil springs are not to be overlooked. how often do you have a coil spring break on a mid sized car during normal driving? or even both coin springs breaking almost simultaneously? almost never.... i hope that fords rear springs that came stock with the 2001 taurus are put under recall because if not i can only guess that the tire company's have many unhappy ford customers heading their way with torn tires from rear coil springs breaking and puncturing tires and also some very costly suspension repairs. i ask you not take this suspension concern lightly. look at toyota. let make sure that ford is aware of this problem and have them issue a recall for these flawed rear coil springs. *tr

The front suspension on my 2001 ford taurus has both coils broken. there is a "customer satisfaction" recall on this problem for 10 years or 150,000. my vehicle has 170,000 miles. if this was a "safety" recall then there would be no limit. i believe this should be a safety issue. the coils can easily slide loose causing steering to be jammed with loss of control and/or tire damage resulting in very rapid lose of tire compression. both situations have a high likely hood of resulting in an accident. *tr

My 2001 ford taurus rear springs broke, causing the struts to break also. this is the 3rd taurus i have owned that did this. ford did recall on the front springs but not the back spring. this is a safety issue. *tr

Coil springs on the ford taurus are breaking. a recall has been done on the front, but not on the back springs. the springs are made of defective material -- hairline cracks can be seen on the spring. the portion of the spring that separates shows that the crack in the spring has oxidized at points before the complete break. this is not a rust problem!! the metal used for these springs is extremely defective. in the portion that broke on my car lodged in the tire, and i was able to thoroughly inspect the metal and saw many hairline cracks. the front spring broke on my car in feb. 2009 and the rear spring broke in march 2010. i was lucky and was not moving on the highway when the springs broke. my front tire was sliced through and blew out. the front springs were replaced, but i had to pay for the tire. yesterday, my back right rear spring broke. i understand from the recall information the back springs were not recalled. why not?? please have this problem corrected before there is a terrible accident on the highway by an unsuspecting driver of a defective vehicle! at 60 mph, a tire blowing would not allow time for the driver to make any corrective action.

I have a 2001 ford taurus se. all four of the suspension coil springs are broken and one of the broken springs had an end which protrued and had rubbed a groove into the tire (inside rear) portion damaging the sidewall of my tire rendering the tire useless.

I have a problem with my 2001 ford taurus that i feel is a safety issue. my concern with my vehicle is that i discovered that it has three broken springs, one of which came very close to causing damage to my tire, i discovered this after i heard a loud noise from the front of the car. upon investigating i discovered a broken front spring. following this i discovered both rear springs were broken as well. i thought it was very odd to have three broken springs on the same car. researching this problem on the web i found this to be a very common problem. i contacted a ford dealer for service and was informed that ford has extended the warranty period for the front springs but not the rear. i feel this is a safety issue and should require ford to recall and fix this problem. observing how close the spring was to making contact with the tire i feel there could have been severe consequences should the spring cause sudden tire failure. i believe that a springs sudden failure would have the potential to cause handling problems as well. again, three spring failures? it would appear this may be a manufacturing problem such as a defective heat treating process or inferior steel used in the manufacturing of the springs. *dt

Tl* the contact owns a 2001 ford taurus. the contact stated while having the rear drums replaced, the mechanic informed the contact that the rear coil springs were defective. the contact stated he felt the vehicle had been riding lower than usual but was not aware of the failure. the front coil springs were previously replaced under nhtsa campaign id number 04v332000 (suspension: front: springs: coil springs) but the rear were never replaced. the vehicle was not in drivable condition and was not repaired. the failure and current mileages were 98,000.

Front springs on my 2001 ford taurus station wagon have broken, within a few months of each other. i thought that the problem was not common, but when i did some research on the internet i discovered that a recall notice was supposed to have been sent out in 2004. i did not receive that recall, even thought the car was registered with ford. note - these were clean breaks and not a result of the gradual deterioration of metal due to rust (caused by winter salt). the problem has not caused a crash, but my research found that in many cases the faulty springs broke through the spring seat and rupture the front tire. this problem has been documented as - 2000 ford taurus recall id from nhtsa: 04v332000 auto recall date: 20040715. although that defect applied to a model year 2000 taurus, the problem occurs in other model years. this is a serious safety hazard, particularly if the spring ruptures a front tire when the car is being driven on a highway. the problem has also been reported on rear springs, which have also punctured the tires. as such it should be mandatory for ford to issue a recall notice to all owners of taurus automobiles. this has not been done and will not be done unless nhtsa demands it. *tr
